Christensen’s marvelously-conceived yachts offer continuously refined engineering that has become an industry trademark. Under the leadership of President Joe Foggia, the builder relies on its successful years of planned strategy and buyers are taking notice. With a growing number of "A-list" owners, as well as world-renown yachtsmen such as John Rosatti (Nice N' Easy) and John Staluppi (Casino Royale), Christensen is fast becoming the choice for knowledgeable people who want a proven platform and the finest workmanship.
Odessa features several 'firsts' for Christensen, most noticeably a splash of color. With an ominous black hull and metallic silver superstructure, it will certainly cast a shadow of curiosity at each port; if not a salute! Among other firsts; a raised coaming that starts at the bow and blends into the bridge, creating a uni-body effect. Among other firsts; all of the marble inside Odessa was completed 100% in-house, but it's the interior design that first comes to mind in this review. It's a radical departure from previous launches.
The builder’s recent range, the Custom Series, began with boats such as Barchetta , featured here on YachtForums, followed by "Marathon" and "Lady Joy". Then came Casino Royale , also featured on YachtForums. And soon, “Remember When” and “Liquidity III” will take to the sea. Christensen's all composite, vacuum infused construction is certified both ABSXA1-AMS & MCA classifications, built to cruise anywhere in the world. Dockwise optional.
Aboard her Sundeck, overlooking the raised swimming pool at center, a multitude of seating and entertainment choices await her voyagers: indoor, outdoor, bar or lounge, shade or sun, mirrored or apart; a vast sunbathing area with capacity for the entire crowd. Something from the bar, or perhaps a little seclusion in a quiet corner? In her sparkling overhead reflection, it seems it’s always double or triple party time on Odessa.
Openly placed on her sundeck overlooking the bow, Odessa offers what appears to be simply a comfortable sunning couch, which it certainly is; but hold on, there’s a trick to her delusions of sun-bathing grandeur: Check her out below for a revealing surprise:
Voila! Odessa opens her heart to hungry sun-baskers, offering multiple padded seats plus a centered table for afternoon to midnight snacks, or anytime outdoor party dining. This followed the owner’s desire for outside areas which are functional and well organized.
A slightly different view of the integral, sun-chase combo; she’s always ready when you are. The owner prescribed these various outside areas for sunshine, and also shaded areas, for his guests. See "Details" following the review for more info.
Setting the stage for Odessa’s brilliant interior design theme, this shot of her aft deck is mirrored in the rectilinear pattern of furnishings, with satin finished woods, fine weather-proof cushioning, and straight line design. Color harmony and contrast is evident in aft deck design theme; boxy ultra modern, but comfy in all aspects.
Sheltered under the deck above, a protected overhead, yet in the open air. The trim, Armani Casa wood furniture – satin finished, weather proofed – welcomes diners while they revel in the view of island shores, away from it all. Those shimmering columns aren't just decorative, they add integral support to Odessa's overhead helicopter landing zone.
On the top deck: she presents restrained luxury, the artful elegance of grand style. Her Armani/Casa furnishings accent the atmosphere, previewed here in the Skylounge, reveals an almost strict linear mode, rather than a family at play; seemingly more in keeping with a corporate meeting conclave. Deep, plush couch seating contrasts with black walnut flooring.
Odessa’s step-down, skylounge bar, follows the L-angles found throughout the boat with a white onyx topped bar and chairs squared simply to the fashionable mode with darkened matrix grey set in the identical design.
An alternate view of her Skylounge with its attention-getting, infinite seating area lined with two coffee tables and fashionable club chairs; all handsomely soft lit in a squared-up setting.
Also on the top deck, immediately aft the helm, the Captain’s Quarters presents a double berth; along with a business desk. It also features a closet and ensuite head/shower. At any time, he is a mere one step, one doorway from full, hands-on pilotage.
With easy access to the helm, the captain’s head/shower features booked matched, solid slab, portoro stone, with a large back lit wall mirror and brushed stainless drawer pulls. Notice the invisible drain sink and ultra-contemporary fixtures, all in keeping with a strict modular theme.
Three custom-embroidered helm seats stand ready on the bridge, overseeing Odessa’s completely equipped helm boasting every category of the latest communications gear, including SATcom, KVH Broadband Tracphone, Seatel 400s VSAT, Panasonic Telephone system, Furuno SSB and VHF, Erikson Cellular Quad Band, Raymarine Haler, Great Circle Network Access. Her Nav systems: Radar, Gyrocompass, Magsystems, Depth Sounders, GPS, Chart Plotters, Furuno Navtex with Printer; Night Vision Cameras by Ocean Systems, Zeus model. All systems: state-of-the-art.
Odessa’s architecturally clean, centrally located, carved wood staircase sweeps down in a semi-circular pattern from the Skylounge to the main deck and lower deck. Possibly the only curves to be found throughout the vessel.
Entering the main salon from the aft, you are met with an established crisp, lineal pattern, suggesting a strict formality, still bearing a richness of tone in fabrics and leather upholstery that invites. Squared-off lighting fixtures echo windows and seating.
This alternate view of Odessa’s Salon emphasizes its richness of design in furnishings and choice of shades, accenting its mood towards restfulness and comfort. Deep carpeting adds to the soothing aura.
A spectacular, lighted aquarium displays a myriad collection of tropical fish and ocean life, providing a room separator between the salon and dining areas.

ODESSA is for sale
Published 14 September 2020
The 48.8m (160ft) motor yacht ODESSA was delivered by US builder Christensen Shipyards in 2009 to award winning acclaim, winning Best Interior Design by Showboats Magazine in 2010, and has been thoroughly maintained since launch.
Featuring a contemporary minimalist style by Cristina Bernardeau, and with her ABS 10-year survey completed in 2019, this is a prime buyer opportunity for an owner seeking immediate use. She is equally well suited to private family use and commercial operation as she is currently a sought-after charter yacht.
The exterior decks offer a range of entertainment options. On the spacious sun deck is a fully equipped bar and BBQ to starboard with an al fresco dining area opposite, an outsize jacuzzi forward with sunpads either side and a large, versatile deck space aft for sun lounging, exercise, entertainment or carrying an EC 130 helicopter.
There is another open air dining option on the upper deck aft with a sun lounging area and forward is a Portuguese bridge area that converts into a sunbed, useful for privacy in port. The main deck aft lounge area can also be used for informal dining, giving her a choice for multiple open air dining options. Steps lead down to the swim platform.
While the yacht has an interior volume of 499GT across four decks, all linked by a guest elevator, and a beam of 9m (29.5ft), her well designed interior layout creates the impression of a much larger vessel. Generous common areas provide guests with plenty of options for entertainment and relaxation.
Her interior styling offers a warm, welcoming and sophisticated atmosphere. The balanced blend of walnut panelling and flooring, neutral marbles and Armani Casa soft furnishings provides a sanctuary at sea, complementing her dynamic exterior designed by Christensen’s in-house team.
Large picture windows in the upper deck sky lounge illuminate L-shaped seating to port a sit up bar starboard aft and an intimate games table forward. The main saloon, also lit by plenty of natural light, has a U-shaped seating area aft and an elegant formal dining area for 10 guests forward of a bulkhead with an aquarium feature.
She has six cabins for 13 guests with a full beam owner's suite on the main deck, a full beam VIP suite on the lower deck along with four more spacious guest cabins: two king size double cabins, one queen size double cabin and one convertible cabin with an additional berth, all en suite.
Twin 1,800hp MTU diesel engines give her a top speed of 17 knots, a cruising speed of 12 knots, a transatlantic range of 4,000nm and Quantum zero speed stabilisers for comfort at anchor on arrival.
This highly desirable yacht, asking USD 27,900,000, is currently lying in Fort Lauderdale where we will be delighted to arrange a private inspection, either virtually or in person.

Christensen motor yacht Odessa sold
The 48.76 metre Christensen motor yacht Odessa , listed for sale by Burgess , has been sold with the buyer introduced by Bob Cury at RJC Yacht Sales .
Built in GRP by US superyacht yard Christensen to ABS class with delivery in 2009, Odessa is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful Christensens ever built. Her ultra modern, minimalist interior by Cristina Bernardeau was awarded the Best Interior Design award by ShowBoats International in 2010.
MCA compliant, accommodation is for up to 13 guests in six cabins with a crisp interior comprising a mix of warm, vertical grain walnut joinery, wide-plank walnut hardwood floors and neutral marbles. All cabins are equipped with LCD televisions and have full en suite bathroom facilities. Textiles and furnishings by Armani Casa are at once highly comfortable and sophisticated.
The massive exterior deck spaces and generous common areas give the impression that the yacht is much larger than her length. Yet, at just under 500 gross tons, operating costs are more in line with much smaller vessels. Other features include the ability to carry an EC 135 helicopter and an elevator that serves all four decks.
Odessa was asking $27,900,000.

Captain james ollemans reflects on the state of the charter market during the myba charter show….
Having completed a significant refit over the winter, 50m MY Odessa was a main attraction at the MYBA Charter Show. When Captain James Ollemans rejoined Odessa two years ago, she was already a very well-established and busy charter yacht. At the time, the boat was doing 11 weeks of charter during the Mediterranean season, which increased to 13 weeks the following year. Looking towards this summer, the boat already has nine weeks booked, meaning the crew is likely to have an even busier season ahead.
Captain Ollemans attributes Odessa ’s popularity on the charter market to her family-orientated design and flexible cabin arrangements, but also to the programme’s ongoing investment into attracting, and keeping, the right crew. “The crew are young and energetic and the owner recognises the need to keep them,” he explains. “We offer packages to the crew to build their skills and experience, which in turn ensures that they are contributing to the boat.”
Captain Ollemans also believes that their busy season ahead is partly down to certain trends in the charter market. “There are fewer last minute bookings and we are seeing clients booking their charters early,” he comments. “And people are still drawn to the South of France as a destination.”
Like many others in the sector, Captain Ollemans has observed a decline in charter activity in the Caribbean. “While there will always be a market for charters in St Barths, I think the market has started moving towards South-East Asia as the region opens up more to superyachts,” he explains.
Regarding the future of the charter market, there are certain barriers that Captain Ollemans foresees having an impact, which might lead to fewer charter yachts.
“There seems to be a lot of new boats coming onto the market but the pool of charter clients is not growing at the same rate,” he considers. “This, combined with increasing tax legislation, means that there are not the same benefits to being a commercially-registered yacht as there used to be. A privately-run vessel is much easier for both captain and owner, so I think a lot of charter yachts will be turning private.”

Yacht dealer to the stars attacked by Rhysida ransomware gang
Marinemax may be in choppy waters after 'stolen data' given million-dollar price tag.
The Rhysida ransomware group claims it was responsible for the cyberattack at US luxury yacht dealer MarineMax earlier this month.
MarineMax, which posted multibillion-dollar revenues last year, disclosed a cyberattack to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on March 10, saying portions of its business were disrupted as a result of the containment measures it enacted.
At the time, the Clearwater, Florida company didn't mention any involvement of ransomware, and its operations were said to have "continued throughout this matter in all material respects."
The Form 8-K filed with the SEC earlier this month states: "The Company does not maintain sensitive data in the information environment impacted by the incident."
Rhysida this week posted a snippet of the data it claims to have stolen from MarineMax to its website, but the montages of documents don't clearly or conclusively reveal their nature. The majority of the leaked documents appear to be related to accounts and finances.
We asked the crooks if they could confirm exactly what kind of data they allege they took from MarineMax, but they didn't immediately respond.
In typical fashion for the group, Rhysida says it is holding a seven-day auction on its site. If it receives a bid it deems fair for the value of the data it claims to have stolen, it will sell it to a single third party on an exclusive basis, rather than making it public.
This method essentially acts as a second means to monetize an alleged breach if the victim refuses to pay. In the usual double extortion ransomware scenario, the attacker requests a ransom, then dumps the stolen data online if the victim doesn't pay.

Rhysida would still likely make the data public if it doesn't receive a bid to its satisfaction – the current price is set at 15 Bitcoin ($1.007 million) – but the auction offers a potential plan B payout that other groups rarely utilize.
"With just seven days on the clock, seize the opportunity to bid on exclusive, unique, and impressive data," its website reads.
"Open your wallets and be ready to buy exclusive data. We sell only to one hand, no reselling, you will be the only owner!"
MarineMax deals in new and used boats, brokers yachts, and markets itself as "the world's largest recreational boat, yacht, and superyacht services company."
Given the nature of its business and the value of the products it deals with, its clientele is likely comprised of high earners and wealthy elites – individuals who would not be too keen on having any sensitive data and accounting information in the hands of criminals.
If the data stolen by Rhysida did indeed include this kind of information, it would be easy to make a case for it being valued at 15 Bitcoin ($1.007 million), given the potential phishing and financial fraud campaigns that miscreants could carry out.
Keen readers of El Reg will remember that Rhysida was responsible for the attack on the British Library last year – one from which the national institution is still trying to recover. It's still the gang's biggest scalp to this day.
Shortly after the incident, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) published an extensive report on the group, raising awareness of its typical behaviors so organizations can plug any holes it regularly exploits.
CISA says it sees similarities between the operations of the group, named after a genus of centipede, and those of Vice Society ransomware gang. It's also known to remote into MFA -less victims' networks using stolen credentials, by phishing employees, or by exploiting vulnerabilities such as Zerologon . ®
