Here Are the Best New Yachts at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show

A number of global launches took place in fort lauderdale, but the sustainable concepts by superyacht builders were the real news of the world's largest in-water event..

The Ferretti Group , during its annual press conference at its tony in-water showroom along a Fort Lauderdale canal, said it has increased revenues consistently for the last nine years, from 309 million Euros in 2014 to 1.1 billion in its latest fiscal year. “For the first six months, we are way above where we were in 2022,” said Stefano de Vivo, Ferretti’s chief commercial officer.

Wallywhy100

One of the big growth drivers among the group has been its Wally brand, a cultural icon in yachting but a small custom builder before the Ferretti Group acquired it in 2019. The Italian firm plans to bring Wally’s annual revenues from 2 million euros to 300 million euros in 10 years.

The wally150why is making its American debut at FLIBS, but the company also announced a smaller wally100why that will be launched next year. The wide-bodied series are a departure for Wally and have created copycats among rival builders. “Basically, we’re trying to pack as much volume as possible inside a much shorter boat,” said de Vivo. “What’s happening in Europe and in America is that new regulations are starting to penalize boats as they get longer. The regulations won’t let you get as close to shore in larger boats. We think these shorter lengths are the best solutions.”

Superyacht Oceanco's Simply Custom sustainable propulsion.

Dutch builder Oceanco, responsible for groundbreaking custom yachts like Jeff Bezos’s 417-foot sailing vessel, Koru , announced a new project that features 17 of the world’s leading yacht and residential designers unveiling their versions of an 80-meter (262-foot) yacht for the brand’s new “Simply Custom” lineup. Worried about being known solely for its one-of-a-kind gigayachts, Oceanco’s new program focuses on the smaller category but offers a wide range of styles for owners. It’s the first program of its kind in yachting.

Behind the exteriors, says Oceanco’s Paris Baloumis, is a focus on sustainable propulsion, with each yacht powered by hybrid diesel-electric systems. “This architecture will be the one common thread across all the designs,” he tells Robb Report . “We’re also designing it so that future propulsion technologies, when they become available, can be retrofitted into the design.”

Superyachts Project Stardust

Another bold superyacht concept at FLIBS is the 206-foot Project Stardust from boutique Italian builder Tankoa Yachts. An unusual twist in the design process was that instead of calling on an established yacht design studio to create the lines of its latest project, Tankoa held a competition among lesser-known designers.

For the exterior the company picked Azerbaijan-based Ucal Abbasli, which gave Stardust a towering, arch-like, glass-filled top section with an open, forward-facing observation deck. For the interior, it chose Miami-based Italian designer Giuseppina Arena, who came up with layouts for sleek, light-filled, mostly stark-white spaces.

FLIBS will continue through Sunday.

Inside a resident’s apartment on board the 196m The World

Just like any modern luxury condominium or private superyacht, the only fixed element of a home on board the world’s largest private residential yacht, The World , is the square footage. Beyond that, residents of The World can redesign and customise as much as they want to make their apartment feel like their own.

“ The World is not like a cruise ship or a small yacht, where guests have little cabins and will sit in the public areas all day just to give themselves space,” explains The World’s Residential Director Andy Dinsdale. “You’ll never get that feeling of it being overcrowded here, because our residents have beautiful homes and they want to spend time in them.”

With 165 private apartments on board owned by 150 families from about 20 countries, residents discover how those living on this 196.35 metre yacht make The World truly feel like home.

Custom-designed apartments

There are 12 different styles of homes spread throughout The World ’s 12 decks, starting from studios and progressing to three-bedroom apartments spanning 301 square metres. The interior of the yacht was designed by Petter Yran and Bjørn Storbraaten, in collaboration with five original designers who worked on the interiors and apartments. Each designer of the apartments has a distinctive style; TNT Milan apartments feature yellow wood finishes, for example, while Nina Campbell-styled residences are more floral and homespun.

Once a resident purchases an apartment they can design, renovate and decorate their home in their own unique style with the help of their preferred designers – those who have styled apartments on board The World have included List GC, Jenan Interior Design, Nordic studio Luttenberger Design, AD Associates Design, YSA Designs and Interiors Idea. Over the years multiple owners have chosen to carry out refurbishments, including combining apartments, adding to the range of available configurations.

For residents planning home alterations, there are two refurbishment slots a year and many chose to schedule works during The World ’s dry dock period every three years. In 2022, 62 residents had their apartments renovated and restyled to create their dream home on board.

Another way that residents choose to add personal touches to their place on board The World is by expressing their tastes through artwork. Paintings and sculptures purchased by the residents adorn the yacht’s common spaces, while each home has a wall space directly opposite the front door where residents can hang a piece of art to personalise the welcome area. During the ship’s recent dry dock in Cadiz, Spain, 12 new art installations were received from world-renowned Saatchi, Grimaldis, and Artsy Galleries representing artists from Venezuela, Romania, Japan, Israel and the United States.

The Jensens, an American-Austrian couple who have owned a home on board The World for more than 15 years, have decorated their apartment with items from their global travels. Their living room is decorated with a glass and wood sculpture from Bali and other exotic memorabilia from their extensive travels, while a Japanese Fusuma door decorated with oriental imagery is featured in the master bedroom.

Residents chose the view

The World’s adventurous cruising itinerary has seen the superyacht traverse the globe from Antarctica to the North Pole and everywhere in between, calling in at over 1,000 ports in over 120 countries. “We are essentially a floating luxury condominium. On board The World , you can travel and take your home with you. So there’s no jet lag, and minimal customs and immigration inconveniences,” explains long-time resident and itinerary committee chairman Mr Jensen.

Not only does this mean that the ever-changing apartment views on The World satisfy residents’ wanderlust, but the sights seen out of the windows of The World are chosen by residents themselves. Itineraries are mapped out by a committee formed by residents, the two Captains and the company’s itinerary planning department and then voted for by everyone else who lives on board. Being a resident on The World means you have a say in where this superyacht cruises and the experiences that can be undertaken at each destination.

Even though there is a set itinerary, residents can easily choose to leave the ship when it suits them, with crew able to arrange all transportation necessary. “The lovely thing is that we stay in each place for a few days and we can either go out, or not go out, or book a tour, or go further inland and meet the ship at the next port,” Mrs Jensen adds.

You can host friends and family on board

“Just like in a private home or on a yacht, you can invite your friends and family to stay,” explains The World’s Dinsdale. As residents average three to four months (combined) on board during the year, they have the option of participating in The World’s guest stay programme whereby their unoccupied residence can be used by guests visiting other residents who require more space to accommodate the entire group. The guest stay programme is also available by invitation only to potential residents who would like to sample the experiences and unique lifestyle of The World before investing in an apartment.

Private chefs

There are plenty of options for food and drink on board The World , with four fine-dining restaurants and plenty more casual eateries and bars offering delicacies influenced by itinerary destinations. But for inspired residents wanting something not on the menu, The World constantly changes the dining experience by inviting guest chefs on board. Notable chefs who have boarded The World as she cruises close to shore have included multi-Michelin star holders Curtis Duffy of Chicago, Kiko Moya of Alicante, Suriname-born Soenil Bahadoer and northern European chefs Jonas Andre Navik, Viki Geunes and Silvio Nickol.

For residents who want to host a party with a specific menu in mind, The World can offer residents a private culinary experience in their home. One time Mrs Jensen used the private chef service was when The World was in Russia as she wanted to taste an authentic beef stroganoff served by local chefs. What she describes as a “very memorable dinner” was completed with a silver-service dining setup organised entirely by The World’s crew, who serve residents in the same capacity as yacht crew and private home staff.

A small selection of homes on board  The World, Residences at Sea  are available for resale every year. Dubai International Boat Show: Glimpse into rarified world of yachts

  • Environment

No less than 50 superyachts are on display this year at annual event

LEAD BOAT PIC-1646928033663

Dubai: The word yacht conjures up images of luxury and a lifestyle of leisure and fun. For sheer bragging rights, only a private jet tops yacht ownership. The world of yachts - especially superyachts - is a rarified one. These majestic floating mansions offer a glimpse into the lives of the top 1 per cent of the world’s population. On Wednesday, I decided to take a peek.

After a gap of two years, the annual Dubai International Boat Show is back this year - and there’s no better place to go superyacht spotting. The array of watercraft on display is genuinely astonishing.

For the tight-knit leisure marine community, the Boat Show (March 9 to 13) is a much-awaited occasion. No less than 50 superyachts are on display this year, at the event’s new permanent location, the Dubai Harbour. In addition to this, hundreds of boats, yachts, catamarans and other watercrafts, in addition to fishing and water-sports equipment are also on show this year at the stunning new harbour. The event’s 28th instalment is being organised by the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Origins of the word ‘yacht’

The word yacht comes from the Dutch ‘jacht’, which means ‘hunt’. ‘Jachts’ in the old days were used to hunt pirates in the high seas. The English use of the word appears to have started in the 17th century, when King Charles II returned from his exile, part of which he spent in the Netherlands. While there, he had developed a love for yachting.

REG BOAT-1-1646928010614

What is a yacht?

What makes a yacht a yacht, though? Turns out, there’s no particular definition. But most boating-types agree that a yacht is a boat used only for leisure purposes and generally has a bedroom, a bathroom and a big engine (unless it is a sailing yacht, which is mainly propelled via wind and sails). Yachts are classified into various categories, based on their size, engine power, and amenities on board.

These include cabin cruisers, for cruising and entertaining; luxury yachts, which are plush and incorporate modern performance technology; sports yachts, which are mainly used for fishing, and catamarans, which are often used in shallow waters and have two hulls (pontoons) generally made of fibreglass.

Big boats at a big show

This year’s edition saw some international debuts, including Sunreef’s catamaran 80 Eco and the Princess Y85, plus a regional first for Sanlorenzo’s SX88. The 54-metre Alloy sailing yacht Tiara and Benetti’s 40-metre Free Day are on display. We also got a chance to step on board Van der Valk’s new Alvali.

UAE shipbuilder

UAE shipyard Gulf Craft, which is one of the major exhibitors at the Dubai International Boat Show, added to its Majesty line, with the superyacht Majesty 111. The company has grown to become one of the top seven shipyards in the world. Gulf Craft’s chairman Mohammed Alshaali said: “In 40 years, we have seen challenges but have kept going - we put the UAE on the world map of boat building.”

Gulf Craft has sold more than 11,000 boats and 600 yachts. “No matter where you in the world, you will see Gulf Craft yachts. The boat-building industry has flourished in Dubai and the Gulf,” Alshaali said at a press conference on Wednesday. Speaking about the superyacht Majesty 111, he said: “It took us four and a half years to build.”

The little (electric) engine that could: The Port of San Diego unveils the nation’s first all-electric tug boat

The 82-foot, all-electric eWolf tug boat, dockside at the Port of San Diego.

The 82-foot eWolf expects to eliminate 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide

The nation’s first all-electric tug boat has docked at the Port of San Diego and expects to begin emissions-free operations in about a month.

Operated by Crowley Maritime Corporation , the 82-foot eWolf will escort ships entering and leaving the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal using electric power instead of diesel fuel, helping slash greenhouse gas emissions at the port and its neighbors in Barrio Logan and National City.

For the record:

1:58 p.m. March 13, 2024 This story has been updated to show the correct amount of government funding that went to the project.

“This is a big deal,” said port chairman Frank Urtasun at a news conference Monday. “This is new technology.”

Capable of speeds of up to 12 knots, the eWolf is powered by a 6.2 megawatt-hour main propulsion battery and two electric drives. The tug has thrust — also known as bollard pull in the parlance of the shipping industry — of 76.8 short tons, which is more powerful than the diesel-powered counterparts at the port.

Constructed in Alabama, the eWolf is equipped with two small generators for emergency use that allow the boat to travel longer distances at a reduced speed.

“Like an electric car, you step on the gas and it jumps,” said Paul Manzi, vice president of Crowley Shipping, based in Jacksonville, Fla. “All of the attributes that you have with an electric motor operation in a car or in an electric truck, you see here in the (eWolf) at massive scale. And it’s extremely quiet so when it pulls away from the dock you literally won’t hear any noise.”

The tug boat’s electricity will come from a charging station that is part of a microgrid facility equipped with two energy storage containers. Battery modules in each container have storage capacity of nearly 1.5 megawatt-hours.

Interconnected with the help of San Diego Gas & Electric, the charging station at the port is designed to allow the vessel to recharge quickly and reduce peak loads on the electric grid.

Operators plan to charge the eWolf overnight so it can perform its chores during daytime hours.

“This technology has individually been around for a while, but it hasn’t necessarily been integrated and optimized to all work together — and that’s kind of our role,” said Bruce Strupp, vice president at ABB Marine & Ports , the company that designed the boat’s propulsion system. “Some of the technology is our technology, some of it’s third-party technology, but we integrate it all together.”

The electric tug boat is expected to begin commercial operations at the port in mid- to late-April, depending on the completion of the charging station.

The all-electric eWolf tugboat at the Port of San Diego

Officials at Crowley did not release the eWolf’s price tag Monday, saying only that it cost about twice as much as a conventional diesel-powered tug boat of comparable size.

But, Manzi said, the company expects the eWolf’s maintenance and operating costs will be “dramatically lower” than what’s spent on a diesel-powered tug boat because the electric model has fewer moving parts.

The entire project — the vessel as well as the charging station — received four grants that added up to $13.67 million, with two grants of $10.9 million from the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, one grant of just over $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and $750,000 from the federal government’s Maritime Administration.

In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that directed state agencies to transition off-road vehicles — including tug boats — and equipment to 100 percent zero emissions by 2035.

By replacing one of the port’s diesel-powered tugs, the eWolf is expected to eliminate the consumption of about 35,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In its first 10 years of use, the electric tug boat is expected to reduce about 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the port and its surrounding areas such as Barrio Logan and National City.

“We’re trying to be good neighbors and trying to be able to help to reduce emissions here to help the electrification movement,” Urtasun said, adding that the port has spent about $130 million on various electrification projects.

Last year, the Port of San Diego became the first in North America to install a pair of all-electric cranes to load and off-load heavy cargo. Each 262 feet high, the cranes replaced an older crane that ran on diesel fuel. Together, the cranes expect to help the port reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47 metric tons per year.

Taiwan warns off chinese coast guard boats again as tensions simmer.

Taiwan on Saturday warned off Chinese coast guard ships that entered its restricted waters near frontline islands close to China for a second day in a row, as tensions simmer across the sensitive Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan’s coast guard said four Chinese coast guard boats on Saturday morning entered the restricted waters of Taiwan-controlled Kinmen islands, which hug the Chinese coast.

It said the Chinese boats stayed just over an hour after Taiwan authorities asked them to leave.

China claims democratically-governed Taiwan as its own territory, over the island’s strong objections.

It has stepped up military activities near Taiwan in recent years, with almost daily incursions into air defence identification zones.

“You have entered our country’s restricted waters. Please turn around immediately,” a Taiwan official said via radio in a broadcast message to their Chinese counterparts, according to footage released on Saturday by Taiwan’s coast guard.

The footage shows a Taiwan coast guard boat tracking the movement of two Chinese ships in the near distance.

A Chinese coastguard ship sails during a military drill near Fuzhou, Fujian Province, near the Taiwan-controlled Matsu Islands.

“The move has seriously impacted traffic and safety. To avoid triggering naval incidents we urge them to stop such behaviours,” Taiwan’s coast guard said in a statement.

There was no immediate comment from China’s coast guard, which does not have publicly available contact details.

China’s coast guard conducted patrols near the Kinmen Islands on Friday as well, with four Chinese coast guard boats being warned away by their Taiwanese counterparts, according to Taiwan’s official Central News Agency.

Last month, China’s coast guard began regular patrols around Kinmen, after two Chinese nationals died while trying to flee Taiwan’s coast guard after their boat entered prohibited waters.

Taiwan dispatched coast guard boats on Thursday to join a  rescue mission  at China’s request after a Chinese fishing vessel capsized near the Kinmen islands.

Taiwan’s government has stressed the importance of co-operation between Taiwan and China amid the heightened tensions.

On Friday, Taiwan also sent several boats at China’s request to help search for a Chinese fisherman who went overboard near the Taiwan-controlled Matsu islands, in the northern end of the Taiwan Strait.

A senior Taiwan security official, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, told Reuters that Beijing is sending out “confusing” messages by continuing its harassment of Taiwan, while also asking for Taipei’s assistance on dealing with maritime incidents.

The official said the latest moves by the Chinese coast guard in Kinmen “did not carry substantial security threats” but complicated the situation there.

“We are clueless,” the official said. “We tried to save their fishermen yesterday and today they are baring their teeth and claws.”

Last week, Taiwan’s top China policy-making body urged its giant neighbour not to change the “status quo” in waters near Kinmen by sending coast guard boats into restricted areas.

China and Taiwan launch joint rescue bid after boat capsizes near sensitive islands

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan dispatched coast guard boats on Thursday to join a rescue mission at China’s request after a fishing vessel capsized near the Taiwan-controlled Kinmen islands , amid heightened tension in the sensitive Taiwan Strait.

China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, over the island’s strong objections, and has stepped up military activities near it in recent years, with almost daily incursions into air defense identification zones.

Authorities on both sides sent the rescue boats after a Chinese fishing vessel capsized in the early hours, Taiwan’s coast guard said in a statement, adding that two people were missing, though two had been rescued and two bodies retrieved.

Coast guard chief Chou Mei-wu told a parliamentary committee the boats were sent after Chinese authorities sought help, adding that such requests were common, with 119 people rescued in such efforts over the past three years or so.

Members of Taiwan's coast guard work during a rescue operation after a boat capsized near Taiwan-controlled Kinmen islands

“The waters are narrow around the Kinmen-Xiamen (area) and co-operation between Taiwan and China is very important,” he said, referring to the neighbors’ cities that face each other across the strait.

Taiwan sent four coast guard vessels and its Chinese counterpart six to participate in the rescue effort, the coast guard said.

Last month, China’s coast guard began regular patrols around the Kinmen islands close to its coast, after two Chinese nationals died while trying to flee Taiwan’s coast guard after their boat entered prohibited waters.

The Chinese fishing boat capsized about 1.07 nautical miles west of Taiwan’s Dongding island, the coast guard said, with armed forces stationed there also engaging in the rescue, but did not elaborate.

In a statement, Taiwan’s Kinmen defense command said it had not received any request from Chinese authorities to search the island, but added that any survivors found would be handed to the coast guard.

Last week, Taiwan’s top China policy-making body urged its giant neighbor not to change the “status quo” around the waters there by sending coast guard boats into restricted areas, saying tension should be “controllable.”

A migrant boat sinks off the Turkish coast, killing at least 22 people

ANKARA, Turkey — A rubber dinghy carrying migrants sank off Turkey’s northern Aegean coast on Friday, killing at least 22 people, officials said.

Turkish coast guard personnel rescued two migrants from the sea off the town of Eceabat in Canakkale province, while two others reached the shore by themselves and notified officials, Gov. Ilhami Aktas said.

It was not clear how many people were on the boat when it sank and the coast guard was continuing to search the area, he said.

Aktas told the state-run Anadolu Agency that seven of the dead were infants or children.

The migrants’ nationalities were not immediately known.

They were trying to reach the Greek island of Samothraki, the private Demiroren News Agency reported.

Eighteen rescue boats, a plane, two helicopters and a drone were involved in the search and rescue mission, the statement said. Ambulances were on standby at a nearby port, Anadolu reported.

Although their numbers have declined in recent years, migrants mostly from the Middle East and Africa often leave Turkey to try to reach Greece or Italy in search of a better life in European countries.

The Turkish coast guard said it caught at least 93 migrants attempting to leave the Turkish coast on boats this week.
