RYA Powerboat Level II (PB2)

This course is absolutely essential for all crew (Deckhands, Engineers, Steward/esses and Chefs). Superyacht guests are regularly ferried/tendered between the yachts and the shore. It is imperative that the crew hold this license for all tender driving duties required. We strive to keep the highest standard on this one.

SYSA Deckhand Course

We run parts of the course on board Motor Yachts in the V&A marina to give crew their first hands on experience of learning on board multi million-rand vessels.

RYA Tender Operator

This new qualification was launched in 2015 at the Monaco Boat Show. This was brought about through a collective effort from the RYA and PYA (Professional Yachting Association), as there have been growing calls from within the superyacht industry to step up the skills of entry-level crew with regards to tender driving and safety, especially during ​night hours.

An extension to your Powerboat level II (PB2), adding an additional two days dedicated to the Tender Operator’s course will produce an excellent, skilled and confident powerboat handler who is confident in night op’s, navigation and advanced docking manoeuvres.

Note: You must already hold a ​RYA PB Level II ​certificate as well as ​VHF​ before you can complete this course.

Cape Town could not be a better training ground for this course with its city and Monaco-like setting and large city backscatter to get your navigation nice and strong. We also simulate

chartwork and familiarisation scenarios for Cannes-Antibes-Nice, Palma de Mallorca and Miami-Fort Lauderdale. A favourite between our senior/experienced instructors to teach and impart knowledge​.

RYA VHF Radio (SRC – Short Range Certificate)

A Radio Operators License is a key qualification for professional communication between ships and ports/marinas. This is a theory and practical course about understanding communication at sea.

• Functionality and capability of VHF radio.

A strong attribute when assisting on bridge watch, and necessary for qualification progress.  Please note an additional £70 fee paid directly to RYA.

Your duties as an assistant watchkeeper on the bridge mean you are there to assist the certified watchkeeper (OOW) to maintain a good lookout, identify targets (on radar) and transfer key information on vessel aspect (direction), size of vessel, speed, special conditions, course changes and ARPA.

We provide crew with a solid navigational base for target tracking, position fixing and other lookout duties. Our simulators give “real-time” pressure and action to situations programmed in by the instructor. Career progression starts on the bridge.

RYA Personal Watercraft Course (PWC/Jet Ski)

This Personal Watercraft Course licenses you to operate jet-skis globally. It also forms part of the steppingstone license towards your PW Instructor license. We are often tasked as deck crew, to entertain the yacht owners and their kids/guests on the PW’s/jet-skis. A vital license to hold for your duties on board, as well as employment.

What does a Yacht Stewardess do?

The  stewardess  on board a  superyacht  is a diligent worker with a positive, can-do attitude that takes instruction well and pays impeccable attention to detail.

A stewardess maintains the interior of a superyacht and provides five-star service to its owners and guests. On charter or owner trips, the interior team manages beverage and meal service, housekeeping, and laundry, all with the most pristine detail.

Your duties may include cabin preparation, setting tables, arranging flowers, and cleaning all areas of the yacht’s interior. You will help the deck team moor (park) the yacht sometimes.

While the job entails a high level of enthusiasm and long hours, a stewardess is rewarded with the opportunity to see the world, make friends, and learn valuable life skills. 

What does a Superyacht Stewardess earn?

On average, a junior yacht stewardess can expect to earn between € 2950 and € 3 440 per month, depending on the size of the vessel they are working on. This could be someone who has never worked as a stewardess before or has spent a short time in the role.

As you gain more experience on a larger yacht, this may mean a promotion to second stew, sharing some responsibilities with the chief stewardess – earnings can increase to an average of between € 3440 – € 5420 per month. Again, your yacht stewardess’s salary at this level depends on the size of the yacht, your training, and your certification.

In the senior role of the chief stewardess, the salary is between € 4910 to € 8850 + per month, with the job requiring by far the most responsibilities of the interior team.

The typical yacht stewardess’s salary varies from yacht to yacht. However, these estimates provide a rough idea of how you can progress.

What does the Stewardess Course Entail?

Ocean Star  Sailing Academy  provides you with what is considered within the industry to be the minimum training and certification needed to find work as a stewardess.

Industry professionals with several years of experience instruct our students. Included in the stewardess course are wine appreciation and cocktails, flower arrangements, silver service (as well as a silver service lunch/dinner where you demonstrate your newly learned skills), industry and visa knowledge, laundry services, detailing the interior of the yacht, constructing a CV specific to the industry and an introduction to barista training.

Seven-Star service is expected, and we work to ensure our students are fully prepared before starting their new careers.

More importantly, we are industry leaders in preparing our students for the challenge of finding work.

STCW   Basic Safety Training course  is the legal minimum requirement for anyone seeking commercial work aboard vessels, including  working on Superyachts,  and  working on Cruise ships . Ocean Star Sailing Academy is the leading  RYA accredited  training facility in Cape Town, South Africa.

Wonderful team, from management to the instructors. Welcoming and professional! The accommodation is more than anyone can ask, few minutes walking from the school! Nice fleet and wonderful place where to sail. Wind is always blowing, and sea condition goes s from flat (in the lagoon for starting) to surfing 2/3mt swell in complete safety. As a foreigner i never felt so at home!

Competent Crew & Day Skipper – Recreational Sailing

I followed the “competent crew” and “day skipper” training over 3 weeks. Excellent school, of good level, the instructor was very competent, patient despite my average level in English… We repeat the gestures and instructions until perfect assimilation and execution. Higher level of education than anything I have experienced before in France, at a much cheaper rate. I definitely improved my level in sailing, in a friendly and festive atmosphere. The sailboats are very good, and the accommodation at the crew house is perfect. I hope to come back to continue with the “coastal skipper” training. I recommend this school, especially if you are a beginner.

First class education and instructors have a vast knowledge on all topics. An excellent sailing school through and through.

We offer professional sail training for local and international clients, with all international certificates accredited by the RYA and endorsed by the MCA, as well as local certificates accredited by SAS.

How to Choose a Yacht Crew Training School in South Africa

There are a number of schools around the world offering basic training courses for yacht crew, but not all are internationally recognised. This is important, as you don’t want to spend money doing a certification that won’t be relevant for the waters you will potentially crew in.

When choosing a place from which to get your yacht crew training, the most important accreditation to look out for is whether they are ITY (International Yacht) and MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) certified. Great news for South Africans wishing to pursue a career in the luxury yacht industry is that Get Onboard is  partnered with the only internationally ITY and MCA certified yacht crew training academy in South Africa .

Courses for Newbies

There are a bunch of areas you could qualify in, be that cooking (chefs), attending (stewards) or fixing (deckhands/engineers), but before you can specialise, every single yachtie needs the following two items under their belts:

The first is a medical certificate that states you are cleared, and fit to be at sea and called the  ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate . You can typically obtain the certificate from MCA Approved Doctor (AD) and this certificate is also mandatory before you’re allowed to complete your STCW course.

The second is the  STCW 2010  which is a compulsory requirement for any seafarer in order to be eligible for employment at sea. You can apply for the STCW training through us, as well as more advanced courses like the  Deckhand Course  or the  Interior Crew Training  course.

Where to do these in South Africa

Because these courses are internationally certified, you don’t have to leave the country in order to complete your basic training. This at least gives you extra time to prepare things like your  yacht CV  and choose where you’d like to  kick-start your yachting career from . You can choose whether to complete the  STCW Course in Durban or Cape Town  as well as other more advanced courses. Superyacht Stew Step-Up Course

The Superyacht Stew Step-Up (Advanced) Course is run by a Chief Stewardess/ Purser, that is currently working on rotation.  Whether it be your desire to become Chief Stew, 2nd, Head of Housekeeping or even Head of Service – there are some things you may want to know beforehand.
