Moonbeam of Fife III, 1903

Built at Fairlie by Fife

tuiga classic yacht

The 30 metre, gaff cutter  Moonbeam of Fife III  epitomises beautiful classic yachts at their finest. Launched in 1903,  Moonbeam of Fife  is still going strong on the classic yacht regatta circuit despite being more than a hundred years old. The William Fife-designed yacht is constructed in wood with an oak hull and superstructure, while her interior joinery is well-kept mahogany. The historical yacht  Moonbeam of Fife III  is currently for sale.

Tuiga, 1909

tuiga classic yacht

Built by the renowned William Fife shipyard in Fairlie on the Clyde estuary in Scotland,  Tuiga  was commissioned by the Duke of Medinaceli, a close friend of the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, and has had 10 owners in 106 years. HSH Prince Albert II decided to buy her in 1995.  Tuiga  has been participating in classic yacht regattas ever since and is now the flagship of the Yacht Club de Monaco, crewed by YCM members.

Mariette, 1915

Built by Herreshoff

tuiga classic yacht

The classic 42 metre twin-masted schooner _Mariette of 1915 _was built by Herreshoff in the United States 100 years ago. Age has not withered her, but  Mariette of 1915  has undergone a few refits in the Pendennis yard at Falmouth in recent years: in 2010 and again in 2012 in preparation for the Pendennis Cup, in which she took first prize in the St Petroc Traditional Class as well as being crowned overall winner. In 2014 she returned to Falmouth once more for minor works.

Creole, 1927

Built by Camper & Nicholson

tuiga classic yacht

Now owned by the Gucci family, this beautiful wooden schooner has had a colourful history. Commissioned by wealthy American Alan Cochran and launched in 1927,   Creole  has had a number of different owners and also been called  Vira.  When she was known as  Magic Circle , she was transformed into a minesweeper during the Second World War, having previously competed in a number of regattas and attended previous America’s Cup events. In the 1970s she was used by the Danish government for sailing training in the rehabilitation of drug addicts before being bought by the Gucci family in 1983.

Endeavour, 1934

tuiga classic yacht

Arguably the world’s most famous J Class,   Endeavour  was the British challenger in the 1934 America’s Cup, but was beaten by the Harold Vanderbilt-owned  Rainbow .  Endeavour  was commissioned by Sir T.O.M. Sopwith, who was keen to ensure that this yacht was the most advanced design possible. With his experience designing aircraft, Sopwith applied aviation technology to  Endeavour ’s rig and winches and spared nothing to make her the finest vessel of her day.

She swept through the British racing fleet and into the hearts of yachtsmen around the world, winning many races in her first season. Though she did not win the America’s Cup she came closer to doing so than any other challenger.

Since 1934, she has often led a perilous existence, even being sold to a scrap merchant in 1947 only to be saved by another buyer hours before her demolition was due to begin. In 1984, American yachtswoman Elizabeth Meyer bought  Endeavour  and she was transformed and rebuilt by Royal Huisman.  Endeavour  sailed again on June 22, 1989, for the first time in 52 years. J Class yacht   Endeavour  is now for sale.

Elena, 1910

Built by Herreshof

tuiga classic yacht

In 1910, Morton Plant commissioned 55 metre   Elena  to be designed by American naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff, the so-called “Wizard of Bristol”, who made his name designing sailing yachts for America’s elite. Plant’s brief was to the point: he wanted a schooner “that can win”.

Herreshoff gave  Elena  a slightly deeper keel than preceding designs of that time, lowering her centre of ballast, which improved her windward ability.  Elena  won most of her early races against the cream of the American schooner fleet and in 1928 came her crowning glory, victory in the Transatlantic Race. In 2009, she was rebuilt using the original plans for the first  Elena.

Black Swan, 1899

tuiga classic yacht

Originally designed by Charles Nicholson and built in 1899 at Camper and Nicholson in Gosport, England,  Black Swan  started life as  Brynhild  with a yawl rig. She won a number of races at the beginning of the 20th century, including the King’s Cup. Over the years, she has undergone several changes and different rig configurations, and at one stage she was renamed  Changrilla . She was rechristened  Black Swan  in the 1960s and, today, after an extensive restoration project at the Beconcini yard in La Spezia, Italy, she is now carrying a gaff-rig, designed by the Faggioni Yacht Design Studio and built by Harry Spencer.

Mariquita, 1911

Built by Fairlie

tuiga classic yacht

Another beautiful classic yacht from Fife,  Mariquita  was launched in 1911. The 38.16 metre sailing yacht was designed and built for the industrialist Arthur Stothert. As part of the 19 metre Big Class racing that re-emerged in 1911, this gaff-rigged cutter is said to have inspired the J Class yachts that came after her.

She raced competitively against her brethren from 1911-1913, but by the 1950s,  Mariquita  was the last in the 19 metre class remaining. She was restored in 1991 and received a further refit in 2004. A star on the classic yacht racing scene,  Mariquita  is now for sale.

Is this the finest classic yacht of all time?

tuiga classic yacht

The finest classic yacht of all time? Stupid question of course, but fun to try to answer it. Here, from CB300, is our best classic ever

We’re sat around a table after lunch, small black coffee to hand, and the idea comes to mind that for our 300th issue (June 2013) we should feature the ultimate classic boat, writes Dan Houston . And of course the idea is a bit mad – ah, I admit it was mine; how can you take one boat, one design, from out of the pantheon of so much beauty and floating grace and say she’s the best? To those who love working boats it will be different to those whose predilection is for a small steamboat…

But while this issue celebrates the diversity of classic boats of all sizes and provenance we are going to say that for us, at this point in time, the 1909 Fife design Tuiga – well she’s got to be the all-time classic. The 15-M gaff cutter exudes a grace under sail that can take your breath away and her lines in harbour perform some kind of massage to the eyes; her lofty rig is all about the transference of power into speed; her deck furniture and the simplicity of fittings there – no winches – speak of the seamanship of a bygone era. In fact it’s the very simplicity of her look that draws you in. It seems to have a narrative quality as you stare and begin to work out how it would be to sail such a boat.

Of course many boats have these attributes; an Essex Smack will create similar feelings. But Tuiga is here not just for her superlative looks. She was one of the first boats to be restored to sail at a time when plastic yachting had all but taken over. She has stood, both sailing and in-harbour, as a bastion of living history that says it doesn’t all have to be of the modern age; she helped to create the breadth of the classic boating movement. There was a kind of collective gasp that went around the world when she came out of the yard at Fairlie Restorations on the Hamble in 1993. How could so much beauty be resurrected? She was perfect, she was strong and to prove it she soon had Eric Tabarly, scion of both the old and new worlds of sailing, attentively holding her tiller in places like Cannes and Monaco, racing her like a thoroughbred till metaphorically the veins were standing out… on pretty much everyone involved.

Lines

Gracing the Nioulargue I was a reader then and I kept that June ’93 issue, number 60 – it’s on the desk now 20 years later. She appeared in magazines from Yokohama to the Costa Brava, proclaiming to a wider audience of would-be aesthetes that something was afoot at places like those races around the Nioulargue Buoy of St Tropez. And of course soon photos of her were zinging brightly through the soft optic cables of the newly established internet and it all became a bit more democratic.

It’s also that very accessibility that brings Tuiga to the fore. After all she is one of four 15-Metres, along with The Lady Anne , Hispania and Mariska . Tuiga was restored by the visionary classic car and yacht enthusiast Albert Obrist. She was the first boat to be restored by the newly-founded Fairlie Restorations – but Obrist passed her to the Yacht Club de Monaco after two years and since 1995 she has been sailed by club members. This means that technically there has been easier access to her than other boats of her like and it’s hard to think of any boat which has been run like that and has had so much impact over such a long period. But of course we’ll run your letters – we welcome them!

Tuiga celebrated her centenary in 2009 with celebrations and felicitations, which included some paintings by Jack Vettriano and a lavish square book by Drs Daniel Charles and Wm Collier; John Leather (posthumously), and Ian Nicolson. In it Albert Obrist relates how he appreciates craftsmanship: “I still don’t know anything about sailing, but what I like is the beauty of an object,” says the Swiss bottle cap billionaire who sold his collection of 65 restored Ferraris to Bernie Ecclestone in the late 1990s.

Obrist had already restored Altair , the Wm Fife schooner credited as starting the classic yachting renaissance in the late 1980s, when he came across Tuiga , then advertised in Yachting World for a ‘quick’ sale, in Cyprus in 1989. By then she had a bermudan rig with a furling headsail; she had belonged to a Greek couple whose planned circumnavigation had stalled. The boat was tired. She already had a very long history, including time being owned by the yacht fittings designer JS Highfield in the 1920s, renamed as Dorina . Highfield used her to perfect his famous lever, for setting running backstays correctly, equipping just one side to compare its advantages on the older block-and-tackle system.

William Collier recalls meeting Albert Obrist after he had bought Tuiga . “He wanted me to meet Duncan Walker (now heading the newly founded Fairlie Restorations) but at that stage he was stormbound on the Portuguese coast!”

Extreme Cutter Tuiga was rebuilt at the newly-founded Fairlie Restorations by craftsmen from the Southampton Yacht Services team which had restored Altair. She is a “desperately important” boat according to Collier, who now runs GL Watson in Liverpool. “Albert Obrist thought she was the only 15 left in existence but we knew about Hispania and The Lady Anne – so that started the dream, which recently came true of re-establishing the 15-Metre class (CB283). For years she was the only big cutter around apart from Moonbeam III .

“And she’s an extreme cutter. We had to learn to sail her without winches [it takes the whole crew – often 16 people – to hoist her 2,066sqft (192m²) 397lb (180kg) mainsail] and people were astonished when they saw that; it really did have a huge impact. Then I think Eric Tabarly said she was his favourite boat and it went on.

“Another important aspect of Tuiga ’s restoration is that she is semi-composite and no-one was proposing restoring boats like that back then. She has a steel frame for every two out of American red elm. People thought we were mad, and suggested laminating in wooden frames but Obrist was a purist and so she had all new steel frames. And 20 years on she’s proved that it could be done and it was worth doing,” Collier adds.

Tuiga was the star of the 1993 Nioulargue race where she glid past the fine-lined Moonbeam III . And later with the YCM she has taken her message of classic purism further afield. “She’s been a wonderful ambassador for us,” says Bernard d’Alessandri, YCM’s manager, who often helms Tuiga in races.

“She combines a conservative image with something more dynamic and sporting which makes her a good choice for the club. And she’s not as expensive as a modern boat to run. We don’t change the sails every year, as with a modern boat – she doesn’t need new experimental keels… For maintenance she comes out of the water for a month every spring. And then we sail her every week from the end of April until after the St Tropez regatta in October.

“She has a permanent paid captain (Nicolas Rouit) and is sailed by members of the club who can commit some time, but she’s a dayboat for us – we don’t use her offshore or for cruising. But we can take her anywhere; four years ago she went to Rouen and Cowes; last year we shipped her out to Antigua Classics, just for the week of racing and then back, and of course we took her to Cowes for the America’s Cup Jubilee in 2001. That was one of my favourite experiences with her. To be among so many (208) fine classic boats was an incredible thing.”

The sheer, sheer beauty Unfortunately Tuiga is not going to the Clyde for the fourth quinquennial Fife Regatta this June. But organiser Alastair Houston, marine artist, and very likely a distant relation, has known her since her relaunch: “I think she has the most beautiful sheerline of any boat afloat,” he says, adding: “ White Heather II had that same look which is a sheerline with just that right amount of curve. Most Fife boats have it and it’s what makes them so special but Tuiga ’s is just a little more accentuated.

Also it’s allowed to hit you because she has just a toerail, there’s no bulwark in place to detract from the line of the deck meeting the hull planks. It’s the most vital ingredient and it makes her look almost organic. It’s what makes people stop and stare.

“They don’t know why the boat is having that effect, but I do and it’s all because of the perfect clean sheerline – that carries everything. And then you have the details, like the beautifully proportioned deckhouses on top of that and it creates the effect.”

Being lucky enough to have helmed another Fife 15-M – The Lady Anne at one of the Fife Regattas I think the memory will go with me into my box. The boat simply felt alive with energy, her deck seemed to carry a small hum, as though some fabulous propulsive machinery were at work down below, and she surged forward to any increase in wind pressure. One could sense the water sluicing past the rudder, deep below in the darkness of the Clyde and how a nuance of touch would send her head easily up to, or off, the wind.

And Tuiga , from what people say, feels the same. For Bernard d’Alessandri the fact that she can now race with other 15-Ms has made a huge difference: “It’s like match racing and we don’t know who will be the winner because tactics are so important now,” he says. “For me racing the four 15s together at the Monaco Classics in 2011 was just an incredible situation. It was the first time anyone had seen anything like that in more than 100 years. With the relaunching of Hispania in 2010 and Mariska earlier there were four to race at Monaco Classics in 2011. For while The Lady Anne was restored in 1998/9 she was quickly banned from racing (in the Med) because she had carbon fibre laminated inside her hollow wooden mast (CB170).

The Lady Anne ’s carbon was blamed for giving her too much power, evidenced by how she sailed away from Tuiga in some races and she had to cut her rig down and reduce somewhat before she was allowed back into the fold, 10 years after cruising in the wilderness or racing at the Fife Regattas in 2003 and 2008. Most experts agree that of the three 15s Mariska is the least original: “She’s re-engineered into a Third Rule shape to be three tons lighter,” dismisses Duncan Walker. The Lady Anne is very original in terms of her lines but she is basically an all-new boat; Hispania had a new hull but her interior is probably the most original. And Tuiga is probably somewhere in between with some of her original interior but the layout being modified in her restoration.

Issue 60 describes Tuiga ’s restoration and history from when she was built in six months by Fife’s Fairlie yard, number 569, for the Duque de Medinaceli of Santander to race against the King of Spain’s Hispania .

Stamp

One aspect of the 15-Ms that seems to gain everyone’s respect is how few crew – typically eight – crewed the yachts in their heyday. Even today with upwards of 16 experienced hands on deck, things can get pretty hairy once the wind is up. Dr Patrice Clerc makes this point in the centenary book, citing how a gybe with Eric Tabarly at the helm led to the mainsheet trimmer crewman, none other than Prince Albert, Monaco’s monarch, losing the skin off the palms of his hands as the mainsheet broke free and tore out off his grip while sailing at the Cannes Film Festival. “ Tuiga is a wild bronco who can’t be fooled,” he quips. Yes and she’s fabulous, utterly fabulous.

tuiga classic yacht

Year: 1909 Type of boat: 15 M JI Country: Monaco Length (LOD) : 28,7 m Architect : William Fife & Son

The Flagship of the Yacht Club de Monaco is a 15-Metre, designed and built by William Fife in 1909. For almost ten years, Tuiga has raced in ail the Mediterranean regattas, sailed to Bénodet for the hundredth anniversary of Pen Duick and, in August 2001, participated in the regattas of the America’s Cup Jubilee. This intense activity shows the extent to which the members of the Club, who form the crew of Tuiga, still have a strong interest in traditional sailing. The same holds true for their President, H.S.H. the Crown Prince Albert II, who often takes the helm, just as Éric Tabarly; who considered Tuiga to be one of the most beautiful yachts in the world liked to do. Even if, since Tuiga has no bulwarks, and heels easily when sheeted hard, the bow wave drenches the deck and crew!

richard mille cup regatta race

10 classic yachts competing at the Richard Mille Cup

The Richard Mille Cup is the newest regatta on the racing calendar that celebrates the pageantry and classic beauty of hand-crafted sailing yachts built before 1939 (or faithful replicas). Beginning in Falmouth earlier this month, the fleet of classics have worked their way across the Solent competing in a series of inshore and offshore races. As the inaugural regatta nears its final leg from Cowes to Le Havre, we take a look at the line-up of schooners and cutters vying for first place...

Length : 69.3m Builder : Van der Graaf Built : 1903

Commissioned by New York Yacht Club member Wilson Marshall, this three-masted schooner hit the headlines by winning the transatlantic Kaiser’s Cup in 1905. Atlantic covered a staggering 341 miles in 24 hours with an average speed of 14.1 knots. This world record would remain undefeated until 1998, making it the longest-standing speed record in the history of yachting. Atlantic was saved from the scrap yard on three separate occasions but unfortunately was broken up at the Newport News Harbor in 1982. Using copies of William Gardner’s original drawings, serial classic yacht restorer Ed Kastelein embarked on an extensive reconstruction project, and triumphantly relaunched Atlantic in 2010 with an identical sail plan and original lines.

Length : 65m Builder : Astilleros de Mallorca Built : 1984

Originally named Jessica, Adix remains one of the largest sailing yachts built since the 1930s. In the mid-late 1980’s she was bought and used as a promotional tool by Alan Bond, who named the yacht after his controversial beer XXXX. Interestingly, she was significantly shorter in the 80s than she is now. She underwent a massive cosmetic restoration in 1989 courtesy of Captain Paul Goss and naval architect Gerard Dijkstra . The subsequent refit included cutting the hull in half and adding a section, which brought her to her current length.

Length : 42m Builder : Herreshoff Built : 1915

This classic twin-masted schooner was built for Harold S. Vanderbilt, the naval architect who produced a succession of undefeated America’s Cup defenders between 1893 and 1920. Other notable owners include Canadian composer Walter Boudreau (who renamed her Janeen ) and Italian film producer and publisher Andrea Rizzoli, who had her restored at the Beconcini shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. Mariette and her sistership Vagrant are the last of the series still in service.

Length : 38.2m Builder : William Fife Built : 1911

As a descendant of Big Class racing and a precursor to the J-Class, Mariquita is the missing link in racing’s evolution. Once World War I broke out, she was sold and renamed Maud IV , where she spent five years safe in Scandinavian waters. She returned to Britain and resumed racing in 1924 until the outbreak of World War II when her luck run out. Sold and stripped of her rigging, sails, mast, and keel, Mariquita was moved to a mud berth where she spent 40 years as a houseboat. Restored by Fairlie in 1991, she set sail once more and has continued to take part in regattas, taking home the Big Boat Panerai Trophy in 2014.

Moonbeam IV

Length : 35m Builder : William Fife Built : 1920

Moonbeam IV is the last and largest of the four Moonbeams commissioned by eminent London lawyer Charles Plumtree Johnson. Construction started in 1914 but was not completed until 1920 due to the outbreak of World War I. Winning the Kings’ Cup in 1920 and 1923, a successful decade of racing followed until she was run out by the incoming J Class in the 1930s and the onset of World War II. In 1950 she was bought by Prince Rainier of Monaco and, for a time, settled into the quiet life. Renamed Deo Juvante (the Grimaldi family motto), Moonbeam IV took the newlyweds, the Prince and Grace Kelly, on their honeymoon.

Length : 28.7m Builder : William Fife Built : 1909

Built for the Duke of Medinacelli, friend to the King of Spain, Tuiga was designed identically to the King’s yacht Hispania so that they could race on equal terms. After collecting a string of second places, rumours spread that the Duke was holding back so as not to embarrass the King. The first 15-Metre to be restored at Fairlie, Tuiga has been owned by the Monaco Yacht Club since 1993 and is often skippered by Pierre Casiraghi, son of Princess Caroline of Hanover.

The Lady Anne

Length : 24.38m Builder : William Fife Built : 1912

The Lady Anne was built for Baron George Coats of Glasgow, who at the time of his death was one of the wealthiest men in Scotland. Commissioned in a bid to recover the coveted 15-Metre Cup from the Germans, Coats’ dreams were dashed by Charles Nicholson , who was drafting his revolutionary Marconi gaff-rig at the same time The Lady Anne was being built. She would end up adopting Nicholson’s rig only two years later. She is the sistership of fellow Richard Mille Cup competitor Tuiga.

Length : 19.2m Builder : J.G. Fay & Co (later Camper & Nicholson ) Built : 1903

Designed by Alfred Mylne, Kelpie is one of eight South Coast One Designs still in existence today and has lived through quite the underdog story. In 1914, she was accused of carrying artillery to be used against the Irish Free State government and in the 1960s, she was sold to Newton Ferrers Sailing School and suffered an interior fire that destroyed most of her interior. After a thorough restoration by Fairlie in 2014 (including a new rudder, stem, and sternpost), Kelpie went on to win her class in several regattas, including the Channel regatta, Mahon, and St. Tropez.

Length : 14m Builder : Aldous Ltd. Built : 1922

Designed for sailing in shoal waters, gaff cutter Ayesha is thought to be the only yacht ever designed by Arthur Boyes of Aldous Ltd. In 2001 she won her class in the Prada classic series in the Med, after sailing across the menacing Bay of Biscay to compete. She was bought in 2015 by serial classic yacht owner and restorer Richard Bond.

Length : 12.7m Builder : WT Jacket Built : 1910

This gaff cutter was commissioned by serial boat owner Henry S Norton, who entered Cynthia into various races in the Falmouth area. This included the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club’s Corinthian race in which Norton won the grand first prize of £3. Cynthia has been in Devon undergoing a meticulous, five-year restoration by retired rigger Peter Lucas , who first saw Cynthia decades prior while on holiday with his parents on the Isle of Wight.

tuiga classic yacht

Tuiga is one of the very few remaining 15-Metres designed following the International Rule. She was designed by William Fife in 1908 and launched the following year in his shipyard for the for the Duke of Medinacelli, who wanted to race together with other noblemen against the King of Spain Alfonso XIII. When the outbreak of World War I cut the racing season short, and then their class was soon cancelled, the 15-Metres fell into degradation and abandonment much sooner than other yachts.

Tuiga was sold just after the end of the war, and then she underwent several changes of ownership and name. In 1935, under the name Kismet she ended up first in real time at the Fastnet race, that was won by Stormy Weather. She was then brought to Scotland where she stayed far from the theatre of World War II, thus avoiding destruction and seizure.

However, when she was brought to the Mediterranean Sea in the early 1970s to be used as a charter yacht, she had changed beyond recognition. In 1989 she was finally brought to the English shipyard Fairle Restoration, specializing in the restoration of Fife yachts, and when she came out four years later she had regained her original beauty, even if the interior layout and furnishing were altered. Today she is the flagship of Yacht Club de Monaco.

Yacht Class n°12 (March-April-May 2018)

A boat, a history.

Pampered by all since becoming the flagship of the Yacht Club de Monaco in 1995, Tuiga, born in the early 20th century, is one of the most beautiful jewels of the classical yachts meetings. She now trains young generations of sailors, without winches, nor pity…

Written by Emmanuel De Toma – Photos : E. de Toma – YCM

The metre rule, this scholarly equation enabling sailboats to compete on an equal footing while giving architects some freedom of interpretation, was created in 1906. The most famous boats in this international rule are of course the 6mR, an Olympic boat since 1908 and the 12mR, the America’s Cup vessel from 1958 to 1987. And the 15mR whose racing life was short (1907 – 1917), but intense. Tuiga belongs to this family that only counted twenty units. But what a lineage !

Steel mahogany and bronze

The 15mR class started taking off in 1909 with the construction of six units including Hispania, commissioned by King Alfonso XIII, designed by the famous William Fife and built in Spain, in the Karpard shipyard in Pasajes. A close friend of the king, the Duke de Medinaceli ordered an almost identical sailboat that was built in Fairlie, Scotland, at the Fife shipyard. Just a few months were necessary to create the beautiful “composite” hull with a mahogany planking and bronze rivets on a steel frame. Thus, was born in the spring of 1909 the amazing and famous Tuiga. Amazing because this aristocracy and wealthy’s plaything is a thoroughbred designed for competition. Famous because no sooner was she launched than she clocked up the miles in the Atlantic to face her sister-ship Hispania in San Sebastian where she finished second, a few metres behind her noble competitor. A month later, in Cowes, the 15mR, Hispania won three races, while Tuiga took second place three times. As if to confirm the rumour that the Duke de Medinaceli was letting the king win out of deference, Tuiga finished at a stone’s throw from Hispania during the San-Sebastian-Biarritz race the following summer. And as if to perfect her reputation of eternal second, she did it again at Ryde international regatta, won by… Hispania. In 1912, the Nicholsons shipyard launched Istria, a revolutionary 15mR. Her one-piece mast prefigured the Marconi rigging while the lighter hull in pine slats allowed to carry more ballast and sails. The two jewels designed by William Fife were definitely surprised in full swing by such technological progress, and quickly found themselves at the bottom of the rankings. In Cowes, Hispania finished fourth and Tuiga last ! In 1913, the two veterans made a modest appearance on the international circuit, at the regattas of Le Havre. The following year, while the world turned into a war zone, the regatta fever redoubled among sailing aristocrats. In the neutral Scandinavia, races were organized during summer 1915, where competed twelve 15mR bought in Great Britain.

In 1916, Tuiga and Hispania, apparently inseparable, joined the Nordic fleet. The first was sold to a Swedish yachtman who renamed her Betty IV while the second delighted a Norwegian racer. In 1917, while the Russians were making their revolution and the French, English, Americans and Prussians were still at each other throats, Scandinavia fell in love with the wonderful yachts of the International Rule. The same year, the Norwegian naval architect Johan August Anker, the future father of the Dragon, designed Neptune, the twentieth and last 15mR built according to the 1906 class rule. However, 1917 also marked the end of the lunacy of regattas on these thoroughbred over twenty metres. And everyone then had a more or less fortunate retirement. In 1923, Tuiga was bought by the vice-commodore of the Royal Thames Yacht Club and headed back to her mother country under the name of Dorina. Ten years later, the boat was acquired by J. Colin Newman. She was renamed Kismet III and endowed with a Marconi rig that made her the scratch winner of the Fastnet Race 1935. The proof that such a perfect hull could still do wonders in one of the most famous European races, even 26 years after her launch. All things considered, when many 15mR have experienced abandonment and mudflats agonies, Tuiga had done rather well. In 1936, her path crossed with the Douglas family who pampered her for 34 years under the name of Nevada and, even made her pass in modern times by giving her her first engine. In 1970, she became the property of Jan Rose, from Glasgow and joined the Mediterranean and the charter fleet. Out of convenience, she even received the 12mR Sceptre’s aluminum mast.

Time of resurrection

Luckily, after ten years of charter and an attempt at restoration by two French who wanted to circumnavigate, an exhausted Tuiga, who had since reverted to her maiden name, surfed on late eighties’ nascent wave of classic yachting. She owed her salvation to three exceptional men : Albert Obrist, a collector of ancient yachts, who bought Tuiga in 1989 and also owned the magnificent Altaïr (a Fife design), William Collier, an erudite naval historian and Duncan Walter, an enthusiast naval carpenter and director of the brand-new English shipyard Fairlie Restorations that was created by Obrist for Tuiga. Restoring the 15mR took four years. More than a year of negotiation was first necessary with the last owner of the Scottish yard, Archie Mc Millan, who was then in his nineties, to acquire nearly all the Fife design he stored in a garden shed. The next step was then to use a step by step approach inside the hull to rebuild the entire structure and the plank, as the massive corrosion between the mahogany planks, the steel frameworks and the bronze rivets left no intermediary alternatives. Thanks to the original designs, the yard fully restored Tuiga’s former splendor, as was the will of the three men. As new, the boat rushed once again on the Atlantic, then to Saint-Tropez where she immediately asserted her superiority against Moonbeam III during the Nioulargue 1993.

Next stop Monaco

Immediately, Bernard d’Alessandri, General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco and vice-president of the International Mediterranean Committee, saw in Tuiga the sailboat that would fulfill his wish. “We needed a boost and to find a flagship that reflected the sports dynamics of our club,” he says. As a top authority in the classic yachting, he convinced H.S.H. Prince Albert II that visiting this boat was worth the detour. In the early hours of a fine autumn Sunday, both went to Cannes. Did Eric Tabarly’s passion for this Fife design weigh in the balance ? Nevertheless, via the creation of a Tuiga Committee, the boat was bought to Albert Obrist and quickly integrated the most hospitable Yacht Club, welcoming its members during sea trips or regattas. The 15mR also regularly welcomes young trainees interested in careers in classic sailing. In addition to 500 hours of training (marine carpentry, seamanship, fairing, sailmaking, mechanics, etc.) the trainees made their first steps aboard during the Prada Challenge. A unique opportunity to discover the art of handling 411 m2 of sail area without any winch. Violence can come on board when the wind gets angry. During an outing under the leadership of Eric Tabarly, who never missed an opportunity to take the helm of this unit he considered to be the most beautiful Fife, (on an equal footing with his Pen Duick), 30 knots of winds were whipping Tuiga under full sails. Against the advices of some teammates, including Bernard d’Alessandri and Prince Albert II, Tabarly did not want to reduce the sail area. As is well known, slowing down was not part of his vocabulary. Consequence : a gybe caused a crewmember to fall into the water while the mainsail slipped from the Prince’s hand, severely burning his palms. The 15mR had just shown her character and no one blamed our national sailor…

The “King” of the Principality

Thus, the wonderfully maintained Tuiga still continues in the 21st century her long life of seas thoroughbred, nine years after a centennial fiercely celebrated in the Principality during the Monaco Classic Week 2009. For some years now, she has been regularly competing in the Paneraï circuit with the three other 15mR still sailing, among which… Hispania !

The final day’s racing in the Westward Cup Regatta took place at Cowes in the Solent yesterday, Saturday 10th July, with the four competing yachts getting the gun at 1100 to allow the breeze to build nicely and get these massive yachts off and running.  As it turned out, all four put on an end of term show screaming towards the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) start line doing eight knots to the delight of the crowds amassed under the Castle battlements and along Princes’ Green in Cowes. Yacht Tuiga won The Westward Cup Regatta 2010 overall, with with luxury classic yacht Mariette comming second and yacht Mariquita being placed thrid.

Classic sailing yacht Tuiga was built in 1909 for the Duke of Medinacelli, who was a friend to the King of Spain, and was designed identically to the King’s yacht, ‘Hispania’. This was so that they could then race on equal terms against each other. However, Tuiga collected a long line of second places allowing rumours to spread that indicated the Duke was ‘holding back’ so as not to beat the King and cause an embarrassing situation. She was the first 15-Metre to be restored at Fairlie Restorations and has been owned by Monaco Yacht Club since 1993.

The RYS Race Committee plotted a 30nm course that took the Westward Cup fleet up to the Needles for a rare photo opportunity for those lucky enough to be in the vicinity and then home to Cowes by mid-afternoon, setting an average speed around the course of 7.4 knots.

The 15m Fife-designed Tuiga took the final day’s line honours, also winning overall and therefore being the first beneficiary of the Westward Cup. Mariquita, the sole survivor of the 19m Class built in 1911, was second over the line, followed by Mariette, built in 1915 and 138ft and then the stunning Eleonora, the 160ft replica of Westward, launched in 2000.

A Glorious Prize Giving In beautiful early evening sunshine, the RYS hosted the Regatta Prizegiving at their Pavilion, attended by Commodores and representatives from the participating yacht clubs and the competing yachts, the yacht captains, crews, sponsors and guests.  Pride of place went to the exquisite Westward Cup sitting graciously in the centre of a display groaning with silverware, including some lovely Armada dishes presented on behalf of each of the participating yacht clubs, and Boat International trophies.

A distinguished group comprising the yacht owners or their representatives stood alongside the Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron, Michael Campbell and his wife Linda; Bob Towbin of the New York Yacht Club, and his wife Lisa; Captain Simon van der Byl, Rear Commodore Yachting RYS, and his wife Suzy; and Alice Widdows, Events Director of Boat International Media. Joining them all were Eleonora’s owners, Zbynek and Susanne Zak.

Captain Simon van der Byl introduced the proceedings by thanking everyone who has been instrumental in making this very special Regatta come to fruition. The Westward Cup Regatta was organised by three of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world, the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) and two partner Clubs, the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) and Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) and in collaboration with Boat International Media.

However it was the dream of one man, Zbynek Zak, the owner of the largest of the four yachts, Eleonora, that ignited the passion behind bringing this Regatta to life and to Cowes in 2010. The Westward Cup was initiated to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the launch of the racing schooner Westward in 1910.

She was designed and built by one of the most successful yacht designers, Nathanael G. Herreshoff, in Bristol, RI, USA. She was one of the fastest and most famous of the Big Class racing yachts, regularly competing in Cowes and most successfully against King George V’s yacht Britannia, and other Big Class yachts.

Built in Holland at Van der Graaf Shipyard in steel, sailing yacht Eleonora was launched 90 years to the day of Westward’s launch, on 31 March 2000.

Tragically, yacht Eleonora suffered a major blow to her racing capability when she lost her two top masts last weekend when out practice racing before the start of the regatta on Tuesday.

The drastic outcome of losing around 45ft of mast and 50% of her sail plan put paid to this stunning Big Class yacht being able to race on an equal footing. However the owners maintained a full programme of competition and gave the thousands of spectators over the week plenty to cheer about as she elegantly manoeuvred around the Solent and was moored off Cowes for everyone to enjoy seeing each evening.

Mr Zak spoke with great charm and heartfelt emotion as he paid tribute to and thanked everyone involved in bringing his dream to life. He described the Regatta as being “a dream that has come true and produced an exceptional week of sailing, an exceptional week of organisation and an exceptional week of hospitality wherever we went in Cowes but especially from the host, the Royal Yacht Squadron.” Mr Zak went on to say how, despite their evident sadness and disappointment about the damage to their yacht, “when we come back it will definitely be with longer masts,” a lighter note that drew much applause.

A special prize of a painting of Westward was presented to a representative from the winning schooner, Mariette, by its artist Marc Berthier.

The overall Regatta prizes were then presented as follows:

Overall winner of the Westward Cup was Tuiga. 2nd place overall went to Mariette and 3rd overall to Mariquita. The RYS Commodore then wrapped up proceedings by thanking everyone for taking part and saying that he was looking forward to welcoming everyone back for the next iteration of the Westward Cup in 2011.

Yacht MARIQUITA

Mariquita (Spanish for ‘ladybird’) is the sole survivor of the 19 Metre Class, whose racing career flourished for two brief seasons before the First World War. Designed and built by William Fife at his Fairlie yard in 1911, Mariquita along with Corona, Norada (Nicholson) and Octavia thrilled the racing public from Kiel to the Clyde, where they arrived having braved a North sea gale. After the collapse of the class, Mariquita went cruising and eventually, minus her keel and rig, became a houseboat at Pin Mill, Suffolk. She was rediscovered in 1991 by William Collier, and restored on the Hamble by Fairlie Restorations in 2004. A winner at Imperia she attended the Fife gathering on the Clyde in 2008.

Yacht MARIETTE

Built in 1915, Mariette was designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff for J Frederick Brown of Boston, a successful wool merchant, who raced and cruised her along the North and Shore Shores of Boston from 1916 to 1927. Renamed Cleopatra’s Barge under Francis K Crowninshield’s ownership, she was requisitioned by the American Navy during the war and declined thereafter. She was brought over to Europe in 1975 and underwent various major refits in 1980 and again in 1995. Thomas Perkins of San Francisco is credited with restoring her to her glorious Gaff rigged specification. Mariette is a regular and successful competitor in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and European classic events.

Day 4 | 9th July 2010 of the Westward Cup Regatta There was all to play for today when the breeze finally kicked in and saw the four competing yachts in the inaugural Westward Cup Regatta jostling for line position and eventually getting the gun at 1130hrs. Meanwhile, the crowd of spectators in Cowes were treated to some wonderful close ups of these beauties as they were milling around awaiting their orders, right in front of the Royal Yacht Squadron. The RYS Race Committee set a more taxing course for the boats and their crews today, sending them to WEST LEPE – SOUTH BRAMBLE – PRINCE CONSORT- HAMSTEAD LEDGE – SOLENT BANK – SOUTH BRAMBLE – PRINCE CONSORT – EAST LEPE – SOUTH BRAMBLE – PRINCE CONSORT- FINISH, a distance of approximately 32 miles.

After settling into their positions, it was Tuiga who was first over the line and she continued to lead the field throughout the day. She is the smallest and lightest of the four and the course certainly suited her as the wind increased up to Force 5, making the crews on all the yachts work harder than usual. The wind and the tide were responsible for requiring numerous tacks and gybes as the fleet made their way around the course. There was little time for any rest on board!

This is the third of four days’ racing for the competing yachts in this fabulous new series that concludes tomorrow.

The days results on corrected time were: 1. Tuiga         04h 48m16s 2. Mariquita   05h 13m 35s 3. Mariette     05h 30m 23s 4. Eleonora    06h 10m 57s

Tuiga awarded

Tuiga  awarded  .

Saturday 16 th  December 2023. The 2023 season has just delivered its verdict on classic yachts and it’s Yacht Club de Monaco’s flagship  Tuiga  (1909) who tops the AFYT ranking in the Big Boats category. It was presented to crew members on Saturday 16 th  December at the Musée National de la Marine in Paris.

Founded in 1994 under the aegis of Yacht Club de France, the AFYT (Association Française des Yachts de Tradition) brings together owners of classic yachts and fans of the traditional methods of sailing in general. Another key mission is to develop and make available to as many people as possible comprehensive information on the expertise and knowhow involved in classic boats be they sailing or motor.

A member of CIM (Comité International de Méditerranée), AFYT contributed to the establishment of the CIM rating for classic yachts that is used in international regattas in the Mediterranean. It was this rating that was chosen for the America’s Cup Jubilee held in Cowes on the Isle of Wight in the UK in 2001.

As for  Tuiga  and her crew of enthusiastic and committed members, they have produced some superb performances this year culminating in this award. After a short winter break the first training sessions for the gaff cutter and her crew begin again on Saturday 30 th March 2024.

D3 Tuiga

Tuiga  awarded

Yacht Club’s Tuiga second in this year’s Big Boat category

The 2023 season has returned its verdict on classic sailing yachts and it’s Yacht Club de Monaco’s flagship Tuiga and her crew of committed members who top the AFYT ranking, the Club reports.

Founded in 1994 under the aegis of Yacht Club de France, the mission of the Association Française des Yachts de Tradition (AFYT) is to bring together owners of classic yachts and more broadly all enthusiasts of traditional sailing. Another objective is to develop and make available to as many people as possible all the information on classic boats (sailing or motor).

Founded in 1926 by Yacht Club de France (1867), Regio Yacht Club Italiano (1879) and Real Club Nautico de Barcelona (1879), CIM (International Mediterranean Committee) is behind how classic yacht races are organised and regulated in the Mediterranean.

This year several boats from Yacht Club de Monaco left their mark on this circuit including Tuiga. The gaff cutter finished second in the Big Boat category just ahead of Carlo Falcone and his Mariella. In the Vintage Gaff, Viola led by Kostia Belkin came third.

Customer ratings and reviews

More than ninety years of history have accompanied this elegant, William Fife 15-meter International Rule on her marvelous journey from the day of her launch to present day.

Now, thanks to Prince Albert 's passion for the sea, Tuiga is reliving her heyday, competing under the flag of the Monaco Yacht Club .

After her launch in 1909 , Tuiga quickly became one of the stars of the big rallies and then later was subjected to a whole host of changes. Her elegant lines are the work of design genius, William Fife, and were commissioned by the Spanish Duke of Medinacelli . The Duke was very clear about what he wanted: " a boat which would be capable of competing on an equal footing against Hispania, King Alfonso XIII of Spain's craft". And so it was. For over four years, the two boats competed in Spanish, French and English waters.

In 1913, Tuiga was sold, she went from owner to owner with each one making a change here and there to better suit her to his needs. The first installed electricity and reduced her sail surface by 20 per cent in 1923. In 1934, another Tuiga's owners mounted her with a 35-bhp Bergius engine and changed her sail plan from fore-and aft to Marconi. The last act of the idiocy came in 1970 when another owner, decided to get rid of the wonderful rake of her stern.

This marked the beginning of a decline which lasted until 1989, when she was a rediscovered by Albert Obrist , owner of Altair. Tuiga then spent four years at the Fairline Restorations boatyard in England. During this time she was dismantled and meticulously rebuilt piece by piece using Fife's original plans . She was now been fully restored to her former glory and is enjoying a magical new life in the waters of the principality with her new owner, the Monaco Yacht Club , headed by Prince Albert Grimaldi.

The 8 Fastest Cruising Catamarans (With Speedchart)

Cruising catamarans are some of the most comfortable boats to roam the water, making them fantastic for both long-term voyages and short-term vacations. Still, cruising catamarans can be great racing boats, but just how fast can they go?

Some of the fastest cruising catamarans include the Gunboat 68 (35 knots), Outremer 45 (25 knots), ORC50 (25 knots), FastCat 435 (20 knots), TS 42 (35 knots), and Lagoon 440 (20 knots). Yet, there are many more cats that can reach 35 knots safely.

If you are interested in knowing about the fastest cruising catamarans, I have you covered. I will be discussing some of the most popular, fastest cruising catamarans and the features that make them so excellent for sailors in need of speed. You will learn more about each catamaran’s speed and amenities, and I will let you know a trick or two to maximize your speed under sail.

How Fast Are Cruising Catamarans?

On average, cruising catamarans can reach top speeds of 15 knots , around 17.3 mph (27.84 kph). However, some exceptional, racing-designed cruising catamarans can reach up to 30+ knots in the right wind conditions.

When you want to better understand catamaran hull characteristics, I suggest the book Catamarans a Complete Guide (amazon link) by the president of Aeroyacht catamarans and that you check out my article Why catamarans capsize .

Factors That Impact Speed

Weight & size.

When you consider a catamaran’s speed, you will need to keep in mind the boat’s weight and narrowness. A vessel that can travel at 15 knots will still move slower if the boat is heavy or has a wide, extensive hull. When increasing the total weight of the boat, the boat “sits” lower in the water, thus increasing water drag and reducing speed.

Why trimarans are faster than catamarans!

Now that we know how weight impacts sailing characteristics, it follows that; if you are planning on racing your catamaran, you should remove as much luggage or extra gear as possible. Eliminating as much weight as possible will help you travel at your cat’s maximum speed .

Narrow Hulls

The hydrodynamics of the ship will heavily affect your speed. Narrower boats can chop through the water with less effort, making slender ships with pointed hulls far faster than wide vessels. So if you are looking for the fastest one available, you should look for a slender hull.

Slim hulls vs. space is a common tradeoff for catamarans optimized for family sailing .

Wind will also affect your ship’s speed, so do not expect your cruising catamaran to reach the maximum speed without heavy wind. Generally, cruising catamarans have two large sails (at least) to power them through the water, and some are so efficient that they can travel even faster than the wind.

Although a strong wind is needed to energize the sails and move the boat, too much wind will instead make the sails less efficient, and maximum speed is most often attained at lower wind speeds but with flat water.

Light Weight Materials

Faster cruising catamarans are often made from carbon fiber materials and fiberglass to keep the weight down. If you are looking for the quickest catamaran that you can find, you should note the materials that the ship is made out of and try to get one that is primarily made from carbon, glass, and resin materials.

While you are looking for the perfect catamaran for you, you should keep in mind what you NEED and what is NICE with your ship. Usually, this decision is between size and speed, but some of these excellent vessels have both.

Lightweight materials are usually costly; for example, a carbon fiber mast will probably cost you +$20 000, depending on the cat’s size.

I have written a buyer’s guide that explains the concept of NEED vs. NICE , which will make choosing the right boat faster and more accurate.

Gunboat 68 (+35Kts)

Gunboat 68 is a cruising catamaran designed to reach the highest speeds possible. Made by Gunboat, the ship uses Grand-Prix racing boats’ designs to develop the speediest cruising catamaran on the market.

Gunboat 68 is made entirely from carbon composites, which keeps the ship lightweight and fast. Gunboat 68 is the perfect catamaran for anyone who wants to reach the highest speeds possible while maintaining control of the vessel and not bouncing around too much.

Gunboat 68 has comfortable, spacious living quarters, though it also has a spacious deck with luxurious seating. Indeed, this cat has it all, making it one of the best cruising catamarans for racers and casual sailors. The design maximizes all of the living spaces and uses lightweight materials to add elegance and luxury to a speedy racing catamaran.

Gunboat 68 is one of the fastest cruising cats out there, with its maximum speed at more than 30 knots . Gunboat 68 can achieve these fast speeds, thanks to its lightweight construction and narrow hull design.

Still, Gunboat can customize your ship’s plan to accommodate your needs. Whether you are looking for a faster, more lightweight boat with a more extensive sail or a more comfortable cruiser, Gunboat 68 is an excellent option for you.

TS 42 (ORC 42)

The TS, or Tres Simple , cruising catamarans, designed by Marsaudon Composites, are some of the fastest cruising catamarans in the world.

Marsaudon developed the ship’s plans using racing boats’ streamlined designs and combined them with a cruising catamaran’s comfortable living spaces. The TS 42 has an inverted hull which helps it glide on the water swiftly without requiring much fuel, but it also has a spacious below-deck area with plenty of luxuries.

TS cruising catamarans are often considered the fastest cruisers on the market, with their speed comfortably reaching upwards of 35 knots in the right wind conditions. Generally, TS catamarans can sail at 20 knots, even with moderate wind. They are the perfect catamaran for racers and high-speed travelers, and yet they still have the amenities of a pleasant live-in vessel.

The TS 42 has a large galley and comfortable cabins, making it a cozy home or vacation vessel. With multiple bathrooms, large windows, and open lounge spaces, these catamarans are superbly comfortable to live in.

The deck and cabin space are divided by a large, openable window, which adds extra light and ventilation to the living areas. It also has plenty of on-deck space, which is rare in such a small vessel with an inverted hull.

If you think I’m using too many confusing nautical terms, you’ll find all the answers on my Catamaran parts explained page .

  • Length: 42.8 ft (13 m)
  • Beam: 24.3 ft (7.4 m)
  • Draft: 4.9 ft (1.5 m) with boards up and 7.5 ft (2.3 m) with boards down
  • Displacement: 5.8 tonnes

Outremer 45

Based in France, Outremer (pronounced uutremeer 😉 ) designed their Outremer 45 to be a long-lasting cruising catamaran that sails smoothly at high speeds. The Outremer 45 can reach about 15 knots, but the most comfortable sailing speed is 10 knots. However, it can travel up to 25 knots in the right wind conditions, making it a quick ship with all of a perfect cruising catamaran’s luxuries.

It is made for durability from carbon, vinyl ester, and divinycell so that it can last many years without repairs. The Outremer 45 has a narrow hull, and it is designed to be as thin as possible to maximize speed and fuel efficiency. Outremer 45 still has comfortable living quarters with large windows and lounge spaces within the boat. Indeed, it sacrifices no comfort for speed.

In this article, I talk a lot about catamaran characteristics, both interior and exterior, if that’s something you want to better understand, then I recommend an article where I write about trade-offs in design choices .

The Outremer 45 was initially designed to be a boat that would last 50 or more years, and it excels in its durability. It has an open, uniquely expansive side deck and plenty of on-deck conveniences that make sailing a breeze in the ORC50.

With supreme safety features such as tall railings, slip-free grips on deck, and enclosed lounge spaces, it is one of the safest catamarans available (is safety your top concern? I wrote a list of the safest catamarans on the market).

  • Maximum Speed: 25 knots
  • Length: 48 ft (14.6 m)
  • Beam: 23.3 ft (7.1 m)
  • Draft: 3.3 ft (1 m) with boards up and 6.7 ft (2.04 m) with boards down
  • Displacement: 8.2 to 11.1 tonnes

Marsaudon Composites ORC50

Marsaudon Composites designed the ORC50, or Ocean Rider Catamaran 50, with both speed and comfort in mind. The ORC50 can be used for cruising, but it is also a great racing boat that has been awarded honors from many races worldwide.

Marsaudon borrowed designs from racing skippers to plan the ORC50, bringing together a cruiser’s comfort with the speed of an award-winning racing boat.

This cruising catamaran is lightweight, which allows it to gain speed at a fast rate, but still has comfortable living quarters inside the boat. It has a rotating carbon mast, which helps to eliminate turbulence over the mainsail and therefore increasing sail efficiency and speed!

With strong winds, the ORC50 can reach up to 23 knots , making it extremely fast for a cruising catamaran. The ORC50 can easily reach speeds much faster than the wind speed, which is a unique quality of this fast, yet comfortable catamaran.

The ORC50 is an excellent long-term living ship with its many organizational compartments, expansive galley, and well-ventilated sleeping cabin. It also has plenty of couches and seating areas built into the boat, and its intuitive design adds plenty of comfort to the cruising catamaran without weighing down the ship.

  • Length: 50 ft (15.23 m)
  • Beam: 27 ft (8.2 m)
  • Draft: 5.6 ft (1.7 m) with boards up and 8.9 ft (2.7 m) with boards down
  • Displacement: 13 tonnes

FastCat 435

African Cat’s catamarans, including the FastCat 435, are designed for speed and racing. This ship is mainly composed of epoxy, fiberglass, and carbon components, making it very lightweight to ensure that it travels as swiftly as possible.

The FastCat 435 may be as light as possible, but it is durable enough to last for many years in the most extreme conditions.

The FastCat 435 has comfortable living quarters and well-designed comfort spaces so that you can get the most out of your trips. The FastCat also has a green hybrid design, and it uses primarily electric power, which can help you prolong your sailing and use less fuel.

I find solar-powered/electric cats pretty exciting, so much so that I wrote an entire article called The Best Solar-Powered Catamarans on the subject.

The FastCat is an excellent option for anyone who wants a smaller cat with a comfortable design and incredible speed. FastCat’s electric power is also a unique, favorable feature for anyone who wants to use less fuel.

  • Maximum Speed: 20 knots
  • Length: 42.7 ft (13 m)
  • Beam: 24.4 ft (7.4 m)
  • Draft: 3.9 ft (1.2 m) with boards up
  • Displacement: 2.4 tonnes

The Lagoon 440 cruising catamaran, like the FastCat, has an electric powering version, which cuts down on fossil fuel usage and ensures that your ship will keep moving. The Lagoon 440 is also among the easiest catamarans to maneuver, thanks to its electric drivetrain and automatic engines.

The speed of the Lagoon 440 usually maxes out at 10 knots with low winds, but with higher winds, it can quickly gain speeds up to 20 knots (some argue even higher, but I’m doubtful). The Lagoon 440 is an excellent cruiser and comfortable catamaran, but it is not an all-out racing cat.

Lagoon is a well-known brand, but there are some caveats, and are Lagoons still making good catamarans?

Below the deck, the living spaces in the Lagoon 440 are magnificent. The ceilings are high, allowing the tallest of passengers to stand in the cabin. The many storage compartments and furnishings have a modern, elegant design. The interior is one large primary cabin with a few private spaces below the deck.

  • Length: 44.6 ft (13.6 m)
  • Beam: 25.3 ft (7.7 m)
  • Draft: 4.3 ft (1.3 m)
  • Displacement: 10.5 tonnes

Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42

Fountaine Pajot designs some of the most luxurious yet speedy cruising catamarans available in the world. They are renowned for their safe, durable designs that make sailing a comfortable, relaxing experience. And on a personal note, i think the name sounds beautiful!

Their cruising catamarans use an inverted hull design that has become a signature mark of Fountaine Pajot vessels. This hull type allows the water to pass beneath the ship quickly, which increases the speed and fuel efficiency of the cat.

The Astréa 42’s primary benefit is its spacious, comfortable living quarters and large, open deck spaces. The ship’s interior spaces have large windows, large lounging areas, and plenty of storage compartments.

The cabin’s ventilation is also excellent, which reduces the classic musty smells of sea living. You can also get two different models of this catamaran, either in a one-cabin option or a two-cabin option, making it an excellent vessel for larger or smaller families.

The Astréa is ideal for long-term sea living and family vacations (it is not as fast as some more racing-oriented cats). Although the Astréa is not the speediest cat available, with its speed maxing out at about 10+ knots, even in favorable wind conditions, its luxurious atmosphere and comfortable cabin spaces make up for its relatively slow speed.

Don’t get me wrong, despite its lower speed compared to the boats on this list, the Astréa 42 can still get you places quicker than many other cruising catamarans (and most monohulls). So, if you want all of the elegance and comfort of a cat and are not too worried about racing, this ship is an excellent option for you.

  • Maximum Speed: 10 knots
  • Length: 41.3 ft (12.6 m)
  • Beam: 23.6 ft (7.2 m)
  • Draft: 4.1 ft (1.3 m)
  • Displacement: 12.3 tonnes

Privilege Signature 510

The Privilege Signature 510 is a long-distance cruising catamaran designed for long-term voyages and sailing in extreme weather conditions. It features a durable, weatherproof design that will protect you from rainy and cold weather while sailing.

The helm and living spaces are completely covered, making it safe to live in, even in cold or stormy weather. It also has an automatic sail adjustment system with the controls at the helm, allowing you to make any adjustments from the helm’s safety and comfort.

Privilege Signature 510 also has an elegant, well-designed living space with plenty of amenities, including an accelerated cooling system, a spacious bathroom and kitchen, and plenty of windows for natural lighting.

With an elegant floor plan, this cozy ship is perfect for long-term living.

The Privilege Signature is not the fastest catamaran on the market, with a maximum speed of around 13 knots. Still, it is one of the quicker cats considering its elaborate amenities and comfortable size.

  • Maximum Speed: 13 knots
  • Length: 50 ft (15.24 m)
  • Beam: 26 ft (7.98 m)
  • Draft: 5 ft (1.57 m)
  • Displacement: 25 tonnes

Although cruising catamarans are great boats for slowly cruising along the water, they can also be swift, substantial racing boats that reach speeds of up to 35 knots. These speedy cruising catamarans still come with all of the amenities of leisure boats, but they also reach incredible speeds without rocking or tossing.

FastCat14™ Catamaran Reviews

My 3rd inflatable but my first Cat. WAAAY more space and 15% faster with the same 20hp motor. 24 mph Highly recommend.

I recently purchased the FASTCAT14 by Sea Eagle, and I couldn't be more thrilled with my decision. This inflatable catamaran offers an exceptional boating experience. The FASTCAT14's inflatable catamaran design provides ample space for four passengers. The user-friendly design makes it a perfect choice for spontaneous trips, and the inflatable nature of the boat ensures easy storage when not in use. The FASTCAT14 truly shines when it comes to cruising. The swivel seats make socializing a joy, and the canopy provides excellent shelter from the elements. The boat's stability, coupled with the Honda 9.9 engine, makes cruising a seamless and enjoyable experience. In conclusion, the FASTCAT14 by Sea Eagle has exceeded my expectations. It's the perfect blend of comfort, convenience, and performance, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a versatile and enjoyable boating experience. pershing 115 yacht

yachting/images/magazine/2005/122005/fea_pershing_525x350.jpg

It takes something very special to impress the jilted residents of the exclusive French town of St. Tropez. Years ago we brought this depot for the rich and famous to a standstill arriving with Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, but we had just set a record across the Atlantic. Sprinting into the port with the striking new, 40-knot Pershing 115 did not quite have the same impact, but this beautiful yacht did stop onlookers in their tracks as they stood and stared.

With the 115, Pershing joins a select band of boatbuilders who are going over the 100-foot mark, taking a quantum leap from the 88-foot former flagship design. This yacht has twice the volume of anything Pershing has ever built. Moreover I was on the first hull and for a prototype design they have done a really superb job of meeting their design and perfomance goals.

Pershing boss Till Antonelli is justifiably proud of the 115. “We knew there was a market out there for a larger Pershing and I think we took a bold step in making the jump straight from 88 to 115 feet. The result is there for all to see and it is a tribute to our new factory and the people who work there, Antonelli says.

The power behind this monster is a pair of 16 cylinder MTU diesels from the 4000 range that produce 3,700 hp each. These engines are huge and they seem to stretch forever along the engine compartment. They are coupled to ZF gearboxes and then the drive goes to KaMeWa water jets in what proved to be a very smooth power train. The water jets are unique in that the inlet ducts of the jets are an integral part of the hull molding which gives a better water flow to the impellers and improves their efficiency.

The two diesels have ample space between them and you see the reason for this when you look aft and see the molding in place for a third water jet. This gives the option to install a centerline TF50 gas turbine to bring the total power up to 13,000 hp. Now you are talking real excitement, and this installation is planned for the next unit that is already under construction. Look for speeds of over 55 knots from this second yacht, speeds that are squarely situated in the Pershing performance territory.

Access to the engine compartment is via a door in the cockpit which leads first to an auxiliary room with the switchboard, watermaker and air conditioning. Forward of this are the crew’s quarters and galley. Stairs lead up from the galley directly into the saloon, close by the dining table, and there is also a dumbwaiter for larger trays. The galley is fitted with all you need for sophisticated meal preparation and the styling, even in these working areas of the yacht, is a close match to the stunning guest areas.

Back aft, the swim platform that protects the water jets is bigger than the average sportsboat. Stairs lead up on both sides to the cockpit, and between them is the garage for the Zodiac tender together with its launching crane. You don’t need to skimp on the water toys on this yacht because there is a second garage that is revealed by raising part of the forward coach roof, housing two jet skis with another launching crane.

The 115 is full of more surprises and one of them comes from opening the door on the right of the saloon entrance. Here there is a stairway winding up to a very private sun deck sitting above the pilothouse. I was trying to determine why there was no sunroof on this yacht similar to those found on other Pershings-this sun deck was the reason. There is another, more public sunpad in the cockpit together with settees and a table, but the upper area is going to be everybody’s favorite.

The sliding saloon doors make an impressive entrance and walking into the saloon takes your breath away. There is none of the rich wood panelling so often found on superyachts, but here the designers have created a beautiful and light, almost minimalistic area with only the dining chairs and the blue leather locker fronts providing color. The settees are white leather, the woodwork a very pale gray-tinted ash, and the sides and overhead a very pale cream.

Quality is enhanced by integral modern artwork above the entrance door and on two of the side window pillars. The relaxing lounge area is aft and a dining table for 10 is forward in a open plan arrangement. Forward at the helm there are three imposing adjustable seats that create what looks like an altar to high performance.

The captain sits in the center chair, which is flanked by the engine and jet controls fitted into the armrests. Here he is master of all he surveys and he really can play tunes with the sensitive machinery controls. In front of him there are seven screens that provide all the information needed for high speed navigation and control, plus sophisticated monitoring systems. The latter have been specially developed by Pershing to control and monitor everything on board except the main engines. The engines have their own MTU dedicated displays and there is a separate display for monitoring the water jet. Large Simrad radar and chart displays provide a full picture of the navigation scene.

A couple of steps down from saloon level takes you into what is virtually a private cinema. Wide lounging settees and chairs face a big flat screen that can be fed from video, DVD or cable or satellite TV. This will be a popular evening relaxing area. Another stairway takes you to the staterooms where the layout is about the only conventional thing on this yacht: a master, a VIP and two twin cabins.

These are all decorated in a similar minimalistic style but with strong colors added through the leather bed bases, the mirror trims and the bright silk bed covers. The result is both modern and restful, with the spacious master stateroom occupying the full beam and featuring an angled bed and deep side windows to give natural light. The VIP stateroom in the bow is almost semi-circular in shape and large enough to have its own settee.

The heads have the same pale gray wood and modern fittings, including hemispherical glass basins. The soles here are wood but have metal strip inserts to give good grip when wet. The extravagant quality of the master stateroom can be seen in the fitting of his-and-her heads for the use of the owners.

The interior of this yacht may be stunning but it is the exterior styling that really sets the scene. The hull has the navy blue and silver combination that was pioneered by Pershing and has since been copied by many. This color scheme complements the series of rising curves that forms the superstructure and, like so much about this design, everything looks well integrated. The practical aspects of the design have been well thought out in most areas, but you only really appreciate the true quality of this yacht out on the water at speed.

We ran the 115 from Cannes to St.Tropez, which is a well-worn path for fast motoryachts. You appreciate one of the qualities of water jet drive with the very delicate maneuvering that is possible with this big yacht. Despite her size you can inch her forward or sideways delicately close to the dock, yet she will spin like a top when you need a quick response. It takes some skill and familiarity with the controls to get to this level of control but the effort is well worthwhile.

Out at sea the response is immediate and thrilling. The thrust from the jets powers the yacht onto plane and keeps it accelerating right up to its terminal velocity. The lack of vibration is impressive, and steering control is delicate and precise when you switch from the steerable joystick controls to the wheel steering. For trim adjustment, the 115 uses the latest interceptor system rather than trim tabs and these give an immediate response that reduces the adjustment period.

On our run down to St.Tropez we had a race with the TGV high-speed train along the coast. The train won that one, but there was no doubt we were fastest on the water that day. Pershing has found just the right balance in this yacht. This design has all the style you want to impress others, both inside and out, yet this is combined with very comfortable living on board. As for performance, 40 knots will meet most requirements but if you want to outrun everything on the water then you can always invest in the gas turbine option. Then maybe, you might even beat that train.

"OSPREY"

Hunt Yachts Harrier 26-2016-OSPREY Wilmington-North Carolina-United StatesOSPREY 3234641

DETAILS ABOUT THIS BOAT

OSPREY is a fine example of a very hard-to-come-by 2016 Hunt Harrier 26 powered with the optional Yamaha 300hp outboard motor with only 215 hours. Lift-kept with custom sun covers, she shows beautifully with her Stars & Stripes blue hull, Oyster White boot stripe and black bottom. In 2018 the Yamaha outboard motor was painted to match the gelcoat and a faux teak transom was applied, nice custom touches done by the Hinckley Company. Properly maintained and serviced (full outboard motor service, with computer check and compression test, March 2022) make OSPREY a true ‘turn key’ offering. This is a great opportunity to acquire a nearly-new Hunt Harrier 26 in time for Spring!

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
