The Ambergris
The Ambergris’ design is based on a Pinky Schooner, a New England boat that was used in the 1800s for fishing and hauling cargo. She’s 60 feet on deck and 80 feet overall. We only take six passengers, so there’s plenty of room on her wide decks to enjoy the sail. Join us for a lovely Maine sailing trip today!
Ambergris’ Story
Captain Patrick Reilly was a sailor in search of a ship.
He had grown up sailing in Maine and started working boats as a teenager. By the time he was 18, he had earned his USCG captain’s license and started working as a yacht captain, sailing all over the world. He also had several boats of his own, the latest of which he had recently sold in Central America.
He found the Ambergris in Florida where she had been lying for the past 10 years. She was a bare hull with a half-rotten foremast, but her steel construction was sound and with a lot of work Patrick saw that she would be a fine sea boat.
Patrick, his partner Erin and their friends motored the Ambergris over to the Bahamas for the rest of the winter where they scraped off the barnacles from her bottom, reinforced the rotten mast and built a jury rig to sail her back to Maine.
That summer they worked on new masts and rigging for the Ambergris, making her seaworthy before sailing back to the Caribbean. Since then they have sailed thousands of more miles aboard the Ambergris between the Caribbean and her summer home in Maine.
How We Board the Ambergris for the Acadia Boat Tour
The Ambergris will be waiting for us on her mooring out in the harbor. To get out to her, we’ll take our ship’s boat, which was originally a lifeboat for a fishing boat from Newfoundland. To get aboard the Ambergris, we’ll climb a short ladder up the ship’s side.
Please let us know if you have mobility issues and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
We’ll meet here. Our office at 172 Clark Point Road
Sail into the Sunset on our Acadia Boat Tours! ★★★★★
Beautiful and relaxing. We went in the fall so the weather was perfect. I also loved the history behind the boat. Highly recommend!
Lovely sail with a lovely captain!
The four of us had the boat to ourselves with Patrick, our captain. One of us was an experienced sailor and enjoyed talking "shop" with Patrick. The boat is very stable and no chance of getting seasick. Lots of space to walk around the deck. Great way to spend the afternoon. Thank you Patrick!
Great trip!
Friendly captain. Good boat. All around fun ride. The weather was beautiful. The views were impressive. Good speed.
Excellent sail on a large craft!
We had an excellent sail though Somes Sound! Captain Patrick was a joy to chat with when the wind was light and the most adept sailing captain when the wind picked up! Highly recommend!

Bar Harbor, ME
Bar Harbor, Maine, a quintessential Maine coastal village perched on the eastern shore of Mt. Desert Island, is a must stop visit by crewed yacht charter on a yacht charter of New England when cruising through “Down East” Maine .” Facing a large harbor and surrounded by Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor offers something for everyone. Stop in Bar Harbor on a crewed yacht charter, and be the first to see the sunrise in the United States on any given day, from the top of Mount Cadillac in Acadia National Park. Visit the museums and explore the many shops filled with typical Maine souvenirs. And, of course, enjoy a feast of Maine lobster choosing from a selection ranging from a simple but tasty lobster roll to a full lobster boil. All of this and more is available when sailing into Bar Harbor on a crewed yacht charter.
Originally, when settled in the 1700’s, this town was named and known as Eden, not being re-named Bar Harbor until 1913. By the late 1800’s, Eden rivaled Newport, Rhode Island , as a “Gilded Age” summer playground for the very wealthy, with huge mansions and coastal hotels built to enjoy the cooling summer breezes off the Atlantic Ocean.
In October of 1947 a disastrous fire burned nearly half the eastern side of Mount Desert Island. 67 palatial summer houses on Millionaires’ Row, five historic grand hotels and 170 permanent homes were destroyed. The town of Bar Harbor survived and exists today much as that which remained after the fire.
Bar Harbor Docks
What to See and Do in Bar Harbor, Maine
Millionaires Row: In the 19th century, Bar Harbor, Maine was a premier summer resort, with cooling summer breezes, featuring the largest resort hotel at that time in America. Nearby, the quickly dubbed Millionaire’s Row area along ocean front West Street, became synonymous with Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island, as a location of lavish summer homes. West Street featured a line of private summer mansions for families with last names such as Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Astor, and Mellon. For an ocean side view of these mansions, only available to meander at low tide, take the Bar Island Walk, an interesting less than one-mile long walk across the shell-covered sand bar connecting Mt. Desert Island to Bar Island
The Historical Museum: Open afternoons, this museum is home to an exhibit of photographs, clothing and other historic items from the “Gilded Age”.
Abbe Museum: Maine is an area rich in Native American culture and history, which is celebrated at the Abbe Museum. Located in the heart of town, this museum, associated with the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC, highlights the history and culture of the Native people in Maine, the Wabanaki.
Bar Harbor Whale Museum: Located on West Street, the Bar Harbor Whale Museum is free to the public, being supported entirely from donations, and is about marine life in Maine, specifically whales. The large whale skeletons, and other natural exhibits of marine mammals, stranded locally, were prepared by the students and staff of the College of the Atlantic.
Bass Harbor Head Light: Built in 1858, and still fully operational, this lighthouse is located on the southwestern reach of Acadia National Park; and warns mariners about Bar Harbor Bar, and guards the southern entrance of Blue Hill Bay. Now on the National Historic Register, the U.S. Coast Guard mans the station, which is not open to the public; however, for a closer look, visitors are welcome on the grounds.
Bar Harbor Shops & Restaurants
Include Bar Harbor as a stop on your yacht charter itinerary of “Down East” Maine, and wander the streets of this historic town, visiting the various shops and museums, stopping for a taste of lobster and perhaps to sample the brew of a local microbrewery. And, enjoy the outdoors surrounding Bar Harbor where mountains meet the sea in Acadia National Park.

Haul Lobster Traps, Visit Somes Sound, and See a Seal Colony
Private charter: Have the boat to yourself.
Welcome aboard the Elizabeth T, a real Maine lobster boat!
This excursion is a great experience for the whole family and full of wildlife and local knowledge.
We depart the fishing community of Southwest Harbor aboard the 33’ wooden lobster boat, the Elizabeth T. First we’ll explore the glacially carved Somes Sound Fjard, where the granite cliffs rise to the surrounding mountain peaks in Acadia National Park. Not only is Somes Sound beautiful but it also abounds in wildlife. Look for seals, porpoise, eagles, osprey and peregrine falcons. From the water you’ll enjoy great views of the grand summer “cottages” owned by wealthy “Rusticators” from Northeast Harbor and Seal Harbor. You’ll have excellent photo opportunities of the Bear Island Lighthouse, one of the prettiest lighthouses along the Maine Coast.
Everyone is excited to pull a few lobster traps. We will haul, bait, and explain how the traps work, and discuss the biology of lobsters. Learn how lobstermen are protecting this thriving industry while harvesting 120 million pounds of lobster annually. At $4 per pound that is nearly half a billion dollars fueling the coastal Maine communities. Most lobsters migrate closer or further from shore depending on the seasons. They may move up to 5 or 6 miles in a year, going closer to shore in warm weather, and offshore for stable, deeper water in late fall. In May the abundance of Lobsters close to shore is still low.
Heading east we will look for a breeding pair of bald eagles. East Bunker Ledge is a favorite spot for watching seals as they swim, fish and sunbathe on the rocks. We’ll cruise home past the Cranberry Islands, where a 200-year old fishing village continues to thrive by the ways of the sea.
Our shared tours are well suited to children and adults. They are safe and comfortable as we stay within the protected calm waters of Great Harbor and the Cranberry Islands. Seasickness is extremely rare. The Elizabeth T is fitted with canvas to keep passengers dry and warm when the conditions are not optimal.
What do I wear?
Dress as you would for walking around town, and bring an extra sweater/sweatshirt and a windbreaker with you. Also useful is a baseball-style cap with visor, sunglasses (polarized are best), and sunscreen. Don’t forget your camera. If you’re on the fence about shorts versus long pants… go with the long pants.

"Once again, Trip Advisor comes through for me. Visiting from Mississippi with a family from New Mexico and a 14yo boy with cancer who had been granted a moose hunt by Catch a Dream Foundation. I booked the private charter wildlife tour for an extra activity. Captain Matt was outstanding, personable, and informative. We saw bald Eagles, two species of seals, cormorants, black guillemot, caspian terns, starfisl, seagulls, lighthouses, early explorer granite mining areas, and we fished and cought mackerel, pollock, and cod. All of this within a 2-hour tour. Clean vessel with updated equipment that includes an in closed cabin. We scored big on this find."
"Took a four hour cruise for deep sea fishing, but on the way we saw a multitude of other wildlife, including ocean sun fish, puffin, seals, and a couple of gorgeous lighthouses. We had two children (ages 9 and 12) and they loved it. The fishing was awesome (they kept reeling them in)! Captain Sare was great- he was very laid back and totally flexible to customize our trip and was great with the kids. Great time out on the water and it provided for a meal (assorted fish dinner)."
