A guide to the Rolex Yacht-Master

rolex yacht master 2 investment

Over the years, the Rolex Yacht-Master watch has grown significantly, becoming one of the most diverse ranges of Rolex watch available.

The evolution of the luxury brand’s classic sports watch has extended beyond imaginable parallels, offering the avid collector various choices in bracelet style, bezel material and case size over three entire decades. As such, the Yacht-Master continues to prove itself a valuable and dependable mainstay within the manufacturer’s current catalogue, despite many models having become discontinued over the years. To define the Yacht-Master by Rolex, one would categorize it as a luxury sports watch, yet the collection can be broken down into two watches that remain incredibly similar to one another, despite a slightly different name.

. One is the Yacht-Master - a watch that can be considered the original sports model designed by Rolex, intended for setting sail with and enjoying whilst sailing aboard a luxury yacht. The Yacht-Master II, however, is designed for more precise functionality. Equipped with all the technology to enable an individual to record regatta timings, this younger distinction of the model is classified as a watch for racing a yacht as opposed to enjoying alongside a ride on one.

Whether wearing a Rolex Yacht-Master for aesthetical or practical reasons, however, its sleek looks and refined qualities are characteristics that are sought after far and wide amongst Rolex fans. Like with every Rolex, however, there are some factors to research and consider before investing in your very first Yacht-Master and these include pricing, history and features amongst many others.

What are the differences between the Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II?

To break down the key differences between the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Rolex Yacht-Master II, here are a few quick facts. The Yacht-Master is available in sizes of 29mm, 35mm, 37mm, 40mm and 42mm and is manufactured in Rolesium, Everose Rolesor, yellow gold Rolesor, solid 18ct yellow gold, solid 18ct white gold and 18ct Everose gold. The watch offers running hours, minutes and seconds and features a date function at 3 o’clock. A bidirectional rotating bezel has a 60-minute scale upon its surface and each model promises a water resistance of 100 meters. The models are offered on an Oyster bracelet or Oysterflex bracelet. The Rolex Yacht-Master II, however, is available in a 44mm size and is offered in a solid stainless steel version, as well as Everose Rolesor, 18ct yellow gold and 18ct white gold. Function-wise, the models offer running seconds with an adjustable countdown timer with a mechanical memory. The watch also features a ring command bezel, along with 100-meter water resistance and is fitted on an Oyster bracelet.

A brief history of the Rolex Yacht-Master watch collection

A brief history of both the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II watches is beneficial before investing in a model from this range. Though not introduced until 1992, the Rolex Yacht-Master watch had foundations secured for its release much earlier than that. The brand had partnered with the New York Yacht Club back in 1958, laying down the roots to its heritage in sailing long before the iconic sports watch was conceptualized. By this point, Rolex had ready developed its first waterproof watch thanks to the 1926 Oyster case.

rolex yacht master 2 investment

In 1966, the Gipsy Moth IV yacht was sailed 29,600 miles around the world by Francis Chichester, who wore a Rolex on his wrist amongst very few other measuring tools including a sextant and nautical chart. Thanks to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch he wore during his journey, time could be tracked amongst rough conditions for an entire 226 days whilst at sea. It put Rolex officially on the radar of seafarers as a manufacturer capable of producing robust and reliable tools for facing the challenging conditions experienced at sea.

In 1992 the world’s first official Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master was released and was crafted entirely from 18ct yellow gold, cementing its status as a luxury tool watch. Over the next 15 years, Rolex would experiment with various case materials until in 2007, the first Yacht-Master II was born. Sportsmen could utilize this tool watch whilst regatta racing – its chronograph features stood out clearly and legibly across the surface of the dial. A programmable countdown timer enabled the individual to measure the countdown time before a race commences for improved precision and a better start to the competition. With flyback and fly-forward functionality, synchronization with the Race Committee was a breeze.

Current Popular Rolex Yacht-Master models

As mentioned, it is the Yacht-Master’s affinity with the sea and its diverse range of styles and case materials that make this collection so widely sought-after within the Rolex watch stratosphere. Paired with cutting-edge technology and primed for yacht race competing, the series has much to offer any luxury sports watch fan. Here are just a few Rolex Yacht-Master watches that have proven their popularity as both a tool and an investment since their release.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref 126622

Rolex Yacht-Master watches made from Rolesium make for an interesting talking point to wear with elegant attire and often make for sophisticated gifts to mark an anniversary or wedding day, especially for those who prefer their wristwatches to exude a very classic look. That said, Rolex packs a lot of modern technology into the design of a Yacht-Master watch such as the model 1266, which not only offers a very compact and manageable case size for those with a slender wrist but has also been forged from a material that is exclusive to the Yacht-Master watch range itself. Stainless Steel and platinum are materials chosen for their robust, corrosion-resistant and luxurious properties, whilst the three-link design of the oyster bracelet creates a timeless look whether paired with elegant or casual attire. Polished middle links and brushed outer links create a unique look against the wrist, especially when you consider that these finishes differ from those seen in the Rolex Submariner and Sea-Dweller models, which instead offer a fully brushed bracelet finish.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref 116680

One of the most popular Rolex Yacht-Master watches has to be the ref 116680 with a blue ceramic bezel. Rolex had begun equipping its watches with Cerachrom bezels back in the year 2005. This model was made available in stainless steel, two-tone Everose, or yellow gold, and since it belongs to the Yacht-Master II collection, measures a broad 44mm diameter. As of 2019, Rolex Yacht-Master II watches were equipped with the Calibre 3235 – a trusted workhorse for many of Rolex’s models. Framed inside this striking blue bezel is a white dial adorned with a small second sub-counter in blue at 6 o’clock, along with a countdown that can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting and once launched, can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref 116655

The Rolex Yacht-Master ref 116656 is, without a doubt, one of the most coveted and popular models from this series of luxury sports watches. The model not only features a matte black ceramic bezel but features a set of two-textured, highly polished and raised numerals upon its sandblasted surface. The watch is fitted to an Oysterflex bracelet, promising all-round comfort and thanks to its unusual choice of contrasting rich black and luxurious pink gold colours, can be enjoyed by both male and female Rolex fans alike. An Everose case and gold serrated ring complete its look, combining nicely with the elegant black bezel, whilst on the display itself, cathedral-type hands and a cyclops date window reside.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II ref 226659

Slightly larger in size is the 42mm Rolex Yacht-Master II watch with the reference 226659, which features a stunning 18ct white gold case and bezel with a striking black Cerachrom bezel inlay for precise tracking of elapsed time. The Oysterflex bracelet is just one of the many appealing features of the Rolex Yacht-Master series. Although creating the aesthetic and sporty look of a rubber strap with its outer elastomer rubber shell in black - inside the structure of the bracelet is a series of flexible metal inserts. The Rolex Yacht-Master II ref 226659 debuted in 2019 with the desirable Calibre 3235 secured to the heart of its case, creating plenty of power reserve for those occasions when taken off the wrist, promising superior reliability and accuracy. Its classic black and white gold colourway make it easy to pair wot formal, casual or elegant attire.

rolex yacht master 2 investment

There will always be plenty of reasons to invest in a Rolex Yacht-Master watch. Having been equipped with a reliable movement and a set of unique features that enable superior regatta timings out on the water, there is little else on the market that matches the supreme craftsmanship and instantly recognizable aesthetics of the iconic Rolex Yacht-Master watch. Whether you have any use for the polarizing watch’s regatta timer feature or not, it is one of the most niche complications watches imaginable. The Yacht-Master will always be a timepiece that holds its value, symbolizing a brand of significant provenance and value.

The Rare and Collectible White Gold & Platinum Rolex Yacht Master II

white gold rolex yacht master II

Among the Rolex catalog, the Yacht Master II collection is a standout, and among the Yacht Master II’s, the white gold and platinum combination, reference 116689 , is quite possibly the most remarkable. One thing is for sure, the Yacht Master II ref 116689 is the rarest version, and because of its scarcity and immense desirability, it is arguably the one with the most potential to be a future collectible.

HISTORY OF THE YACHT MASTER II

The Yacht Master II is a collection based on the successful Yacht Master. It was first introduced to the world in 2007, 15 years after the original Yacht Master debuted, but the collection wasn’t put on the market until 2010. When they finally did, the Yacht Master II instantly became a huge success.

Like all Rolex sports watches, the Yacht Master II was designed for a specific profession, sailing…and more specifically, regatta racing. This is an honest professional yachting watch, with its flyback chronograph and programmable countdown timer.

Upon its official release, Rolex gave the world the yellow gold Yacht Master II reference 116688 and the white gold and platinum Yacht Master II reference 116689. One year later, Rolex introduced a two tone steel and Everose gold version.

The price point for the precious Yacht Master II’s put them among Rolex’s most expensive sports watches.

In 2013, the entry point into the Yacht Master II club dropped with the release of the fully stainless steel Yacht Master II. This made the collection more accessible, at least to those who could get their hands on one brand new. The steel version was and still is hard to get new at an authorized dealer, and it often sells for a premium on the secondary market. It was also during this time that all of the Yacht Master II’s got an engine upgrade. The watch remained the same, but the movement changed. They received the more advanced calibre 4161 that we still get with new Yacht Master II’s today.

The most recent update to the Yacht Master II collection came in 2017. The updates were not exactly significant, mainly dial aesthetics, which included larger hands, a Mercedes style hour hand, a skeletonize minute hand, and an inverted triangle at the 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at the 6 o’clock.

As you can see, the white gold Yacht Master II 116689 that we are selling at Diamonds By Raymond Lee is a pre-2017 model.

No changes to reference numbers

Interestingly, Rolex decided not to change the reference numbers with the updates in 2013 and 2017. The Yacht Master II’s all have the same reference numbers as when they were first released. So, the only way you can tell what version a Yacht Master II is by looking at the paperwork or the dial aesthetics for post 2017 models.

ONE OF ROLEX’S MOST COMPLICATED WATCHES

Before the Yacht Master II collection, Rolex’s emphasis on complications were pretty vapid. You had the chronograph on the Daytona, the second timezone on the GMT, and a day and date complication on the Day-Date. Nothing too fancy. With the Yacht Master II’s programmable flyback regatta chronograph, that all changed. When the Yacht Master II was unveiled in 2007, it instantly became Rolex’s most complicated watch.

It is possibly the most useful chronograph Rolex has ever created. It’s not just for boat racing! It has a 10 minute countdown to zero, it counts down backwards. This can be used for any purpose. What’s more, we find that timing intervals of 10 minutes or less on a very legible chronograph is far more useful than the almost indecipherable and hard to read subdials on a Daytona. This is just very clean and easy to use.

Note: Rolex’s newest collection, the Sky-Dweller , is now Rolex’s most complicated watch, putting the Yacht Master II collection in second place. Nevertheless, the Yacht Master II is a highly complex watch (yet easy to use), so let’s discuss its functionality in more depth.

REGATTA TIMER COMPLICATION

First, let’s explain the point of a regatta chronograph. Its purpose is to track both racing time and the count down of the very important minutes that occur before the racers cross the starting line.

The former point is critical as yachts obviously can’t do a standing start like a race car.

The Fleet Race takes place on a course marked by buoys and it starts with a five, seven or ten minute countdown at which time the yachts begin sailing the course. The countdown is decided by race officials prior to the start of the race. Regatta racers need to strategically order themselves on the starting line, taking in factors like wind and other competitors. The goal is to cross the line as close as they can to the starting signal, but never before as that will cause penalty points.

The skipper of the yacht is in charge of this timing. So, the skipper is the one who needs a watch like the Yacht Master II.

All in all, it is a very prestigious kind of race, worthy of a watch like the Rolex Yacht Master II.

How does the Yacht Master II Regatta Countdown work?

We should first note that the subdial above the 6 o’clock is the running seconds. It has nothing to do with the regatta chronograph. The long red hand is part of the chronograph.

Regatta Timer & Ring Command Bezel

The bezel is not just beautiful, it is part of what controls the programming of the regatta timer.

As you can see on the dial within the blue section, there is 10-0. That is the countdown. 10 minutes to zero minutes (it counts down).

You can set the regatta timer to any number 0-10 (no half-numbers). The large red arrow indicates the countdown time.

To program the timer, rotate the bezel from its standard position (the one you see in the featured pics), counter-clockwise, to position two. You will hear it click.

Then, push the bottom pusher in. It will lock in place. After that, you can unscrew the watertight crown counter-clockwise, and once it is unscrewed, you rotate it clockwise to move the short red arrow. You will see it jump from 0 to 1 to 2 with each turn. Once you set the minute you want to countdown from, you rotate the bezel back to position one (you will hear the bottom pusher pop back out). Remember to screw in your crown.

When you are ready to start the timer, you push the top pusher. The large red second hand will start to rotate. As the long red seconds hand rotates (60 seconds is a full rotation), the short red and white arrow will move as well.

If you want to stop and start at any point, you simply press the top pusher. You can also reset it back to the original programming by pressing the bottom pusher. You will see both arrows flyback to their starting position.

From there, if you want to set the watch to a different time or back to 0, you use the same process of rotating the bezel to position two and so on.

Now, let’s talk more about the aesthetics and wearability.

rolex yachtmaster II reference 116689

YACHT MASTER II 116689

It’s not so uncommon to see a steel, yellow gold, or two-tone Yacht Master II, but the white gold and platinum version is a model that you will not see on the streets very often. In fact, it is quite a rare site to see. This is probably because it costs a lot more than the other Yacht Master II models and Rolex produces less of them.

The white gold and platinum combination doesn’t just change the cost of the Yacht Master II, but it also dramatically alters its appearance. This is because all of the other versions have colored bezels with ceramic inserts. The white gold Yacht Master II’s bezel is entirely made from the noble metal, platinum.

While Rolex’s ceramic bezels are extremely durable, they aren’t really worth anything. There’s no intrinsic value to them. Platinum, on the other hand,  is the most valuable metal of them all and the ultimate symbol of prestige.

18K WHITE GOLD

Besides the platinum bezel and the white dial, the watch is entirely white gold. The case, caseback, bracelet and clasp are finely crafted from 18k white gold. And not just any white gold, this is Rolex’s very own white gold.

Rolex’s white gold is made from the purest metals and it is scrupulously inspected at their in-house lab using state-of-the-art equipment before it is structured, shaped, and finished with the same meticulous care into the watch you see here. It should also be noted that Rolex’s white gold is not plated with rhodium like many white gold jewelry, so it will not tarnish or need to be re-plated.

CASE, BRACELET & DIAL

The case is a standard Rolex Oyster case, yet much larger at 44mm in diameter. With the Tripock crown, it has 100 meters (or 330 feet) of water resistance.

The bracelet integrates seamlessly with the case. It is the iconic, sporty and durable Oyster bracelet. It features an Oysterlock clasp as well, which has 5mm of easy extension built in.

As for the dial, it’s a pearly white backdrop with platinum hands and hour markers, as well as a platinum sub-chapter ring. The hour markers and hands have lume so the watch is easily legible at night. Inside the blue lines, you have the regatta countdown timer, which we’ve already discussed, as well as the red arrow, red regatta chrono seconds hand and running seconds sub-dial. All in all, the dial is so perfectly laid out and the colors make separating the main time from the regatta chronograph effortless.

ON THE WRIST

With the white gold case, the platinum bezel and the white dial, the impression of the Yacht Master II 116689 on the wrist is even bigger than the already sizable 44mm case that it is.

While the colored bezel Yacht Master II’s look on par with a Royal Oak Offshore in terms of wrist presence, the white gold and platinum model appears almost similar to Hublot King Power in that regard, and that’s a 48mm watch.

Now, when talking about wrist presence, we don’t exactly mean size, as this watch doesn’t span the wrist in the same manner as the aforementioned watches. It just has that same commanding noticeability.

The Yacht Master II is undoubtedly a large watch, at 44mm in size. However, it has a nice compact lug to lug measurement of 53mm, which means it spans the wrist like that of a 42mm Royal Oak Offshore .

What’s more, this watch is heavy. It feels like a million bucks on the wrist.

All in all, this means you get that powerful wrist prescience and feel but you don’t need such a huge wrist to pull it off, like you would if you want to wear a King Power or even a Hublot Big Bang or a 44mm Royal Oak.

rolex 116689

RARITY & COLLECTIBILITY

When the Rolex Yacht Master II 116689 was released, everyone wanted it. The marriage of white gold and platinum is simply stunning, there’s no denying that. However, the price point simply put it out of reach for most Rolex customers.

Then, three years later, in 2010, Rolex put out the steel version of the Yacht Master II, which made the vast majority of buyers who were finally about to pony up for the white gold and platinum reconsider and get the steel instead. Of course, it’s not exactly a substitution, as the Yacht Master II in steel has a strong blue aesthetic and the white gold has that as cool as ice look, but it was a much more reasonable option and it looks really great too.

Because of this, the steel Yacht Master II went on to be the most iconic Yacht Master of all (even one of the most iconic watches in the entire industry). However, this also meant it was a lot more common. You’d see a hundred steel Yacht Master II’s before you see a white gold and platinum one.

In regards to collectibility, it is almost impossible to guarantee what models will be collectible in the future. After all, Rolex makes a million watches a year!

However, we can gain some insight by looking to the past. If we look to the 50s and 60s, which is when Rolex put out certain watches that would go on to be the most collectible of the modern day, we can see that the rarest watches were the ones that became collectible. Watches like the Paul Newman Daytona , the Double Red Sea-Dwellers , early Milgauss references, and other scarce watches of the time are now the timepieces that are the most collectible, and thus, valuable.

Today, it is hard to find a watch that is as rare as those classics, as Rolex produces way more watches now. There simply are no modern Rolex watches that exist in only a couple thousand copies. However, the one outlier may be the white gold and platinum Yacht Master II reference 116689.

So, for every steel, yellow gold and two-tone Yacht Master II that Rolex produces to keep up with the demand, it is only furthering the promise of the collectibility of the much less produced white gold Yacht Master II.

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY THE WHITE GOLD YACHT MASTER II SECOND HAND?

Like the vast majority of Rolex precious metal watches, you will be getting a way better deal for the watch on the secondary market. As long as the watch is in good condition and it has its original box and papers, it is a no-brainer. You will not lose any value upon buying the watch, like you would when buying it brand new at an authorized Rolex dealer. This makes a pre-owned white gold and platinum Yacht Master II a great investment, especially with its potential for collectibility someday.

Final Thoughts

The Yacht Master II has value on so many fronts. It’s beautiful, unique and clean (with the last point being important for those who don’t like the in your face appearance of the blue bezel standard Yacht Master II’s). The watch is functional and useful as well. Moreover, it is rare and collectible, with a heft and wrist presence that justifies the heavy price tag.

Hands-On The Rolex Yachtmaster II Regatta Timer, Ref. 116680

The rolex yacht-master ii: for those who consider themselves rolex enthusiasts, it's one of the most polarizing watches the crown produces. and yet there is more – much more – to this relative behemoth than meets the eye. we wanted to see what would happen if we met this technically unique, programmable flyback yacht timer chronograph on its own terms – read on to join us in our journey into one of the most idiosyncratically styled and mechanically sophisticated rolexes ever made..

rolex yacht master 2 investment

I’m going to be completely honest: I was thoroughly prepared to have a negative reaction to this watch. Let’s face it; it’s a head-scratcher for the average Rolex/Submariner/GMT Master/Day-Date lover. First of all it’s pretty damned big. This is a 44 mm watch; it was born a 44 mm watch and it’ll die a 44 mm watch and that is nothing you or anybody else can do about it. You can have it in four different metals, and therefore, weights, ranging from steel (heavy) to gold/steel (heavier) to solid yellow gold (even heavier) to  platinum and white gold combined (Schwarzeneggerian). It has a Cerachrom bezel in an absolutely screaming shade of blue, and it says YACHT-MASTER in giant letters right across the bottom third or so just to remove any lingering shade of doubt in the minds of any small-craft skipper for leagues around that they are in the presence of, well, the Master of a Yacht; it is not an introverted watch by any stretch of the imagination.

On top of everything else, the Yacht-Master II has a complication that pretty much no watch guy or gal ever can remember what do with, or has a perceived need for: it is a regatta timer, which is about as niche a complication as you can imagine. If you get a bunch of watch nuts together there is an excellent chance that you can get a more lucid explanation out of somebody for the Equation of Time than you can for a regatta timer (which is saying something) and it says something about the relative obscurity of the complication in general, and the relative niche-ness of the Yacht-Master II in particular, that when we got it into the office we had five people who live and breathe watches sitting around scratching our heads because no one could quite remember how the darned thing works. You put all those things together and you should have a watch that a dyed-in-the-wool horological classicist should thoroughly disdain. Right?

rolex yacht master 2 investment

Actually, wrong. But let’s back up a bit.

First of all this is technically a very interesting watch and it’s worth your attention just on the level of interesting horological problem solving alone. A regatta timer is used by the skipper of a yacht to determine when their vessel is allowed to cross the starting line. Sailboats can’t just hover at the starting line of a yacht race, so what happens is that the racing committee establishes a countdown period during which the boats have to tack back and forth at the starting line without actually crossing; if you cross early, there is a penalty and if you are too cautious and cross late you will probably cross the finish line behind the boats that made it over the start line ahead of you. The countdown can be anywhere from five to ten minutes depending on the rules and race.

rolex yacht master 2 investment

The Yacht-Master II is a programmable, flyback regatta timer that allows you to select a countdown interval of anything from one to ten minutes; in addition if you have started the countdown early or late, you can synchronize your watch “on the fly” when you hear the second of the two audible signals which are usually given at the start of a race (the signal to start the countdown comes first, and is usually followed by a warning signal closer to the start). Here’s how it works.

To set the countdown timer, you turn the bezel (Rolex calls it the "Command Bezel") a quarter turn to the left. This locks the lower chrono pusher and engages the setting mechanism for the triangular red countdown hand. You then unscrew the crown to its first position, and set the countdown hand – setting is one-way only but at 10 minutes, if you continue to turn the crown, the countdown hand will fly back to 1 and you can continue until you reach the desired number of minutes. When you’re done, you screw the crown back down, and turn the bezel back to its starting position, and you’re ready to regatta.

rolex yacht master 2 investment

When the first gun (or other audible signal) is heard, you start the countdown . . . and that’s it. Now a really neat trick here is that you may, for some reason, have started your countdown too early, or too late. If that’s the case, all you have to do is wait for the second gun/signal, and hit the re-set button – the seconds hand will fly back to the zero mark and begin running again immediately; and the minute countdown hand will fly back to the nearest minute and likewise start counting down again. It’s the fact that the flyback is to the nearest minute, not to zero, that allows you to re-synch your countdown with the official countdown time, that gives the Yacht-Master II much of its utility, and much of its technical interest.

rolex yacht master 2 investment

Okay, sure it’s technically interesting – but what about the aesthetics? All I can tell you is that, much to my very pleasant surprise, it was colossally fun to wear in every sense of the word. The fact that it is so unapologetically extroverted is actually the secret to its appeal.  The weight isn't a problem (at least, not for me, and not in steel) and I found I could wear it all day without discomfort despite the overall size – partly thanks to the downward curvature of the lugs, which ensured a comfortable fit on my 7 inch wrist.  The sharply contrasting deep blued hands, white dial, and red countdown hand – and, yes, that bright blue bezel – give the whole watch a suitably jaunty, nautical feel and make it a pleasure to look at (and at night visibility is very good; the lume on the hands and dial is almost startlingly bright).

Yes, this is an extroverted watch, but the quality of execution is very clean and very high (as is usually the case with Rolex) and it’s so much the opposite of what I’d ordinarily wear that having it on gave a feeling almost like a Walter Mitty fantasy coming to life. I felt like a guy who’s worn a blue suit and rep tie and driven a four door Merc his whole life, who somehow one day finds himself in a pair of ripped jeans and a beat up flight jacket, cruising down some winding secondary road on an old shovelhead Harley, and suddenly catches himself thinking, My god, all the wasted years. Ultimately I started to feel that objecting to the over-the-top-ness  of the Yacht-Master II was silly, even narcissistic – if you go into a Joss Whedon actioner expecting a Lars Von Trier art-house tearjerker to unspool, you probably have only yourself to blame.

rolex yacht master 2 investment

It is a rationally appealing uitlitarian tool watch? I'm not the one to ask. There is no way for me to evaluate what someone who actually owns a ’36 Herreshoff classic yacht and takes it on the regatta circuit would actually think of the Yacht-Master II, or whether they would find it useful. But I can tell you that it is actually a ton of fun to wear, and a big part of the reason is the very thing many object to at first – that this is a watch that pulls no punches when it comes to being larger than life.

It has that one most essential element for something to be a successful style exercise: the courage of its convictions, and if you think of yourself resolutely as a smaller-than-forty millimeter, tasteful restraint kinda guy, get one on your wrist for a surprisingly refreshing change of pace, and you can feel larger than life too.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II 116680 as shown, $18,750, 44 mm diameter case in 904L stainless steel. Bidirectional rotatable "Command Bezel" with blue Cerachrom insert; water resistance 100 meters/10 bar.

Movement, Rolex 4161 self-winding programmable flyback regatta timer with mechanical memory and "on-the-fly" synchronization; Parachrom blue antimagnetic balance spring.

Bracelet, Oyster, flat three piece links with Oysterlock safety clasp.

Rolex Yacht-Master II 116680, 5 Things to Know

One of rolex’s biggest and brashest watches ever made, the yacht-master ii makes a bold statement on the wrist. but it’s not just the yacht-master’s aesthetics that are striking but the watch’s functionality is also head-turning. while there are various versions of the yacht-master in precious metals, today we’re highlighting the popular stainless steel edition. here are five things to know about the rolex yacht-master ii 116680 . rolex yacht-master ii 116680, the rolex yacht-master ii 116680 is less than a decade old.

Although Rolex released the Yacht-Master II model in 2007, it wasn’t until 2013 that the stainless steel ref. 116680 made its debut. Identical to other versions in yellow gold (ref. 116688), two-tone steel and rose gold (ref. 116681), and white gold and platinum (ref. 116689), the steel Yacht-Master II 116680 sports a 44mm case (the only other Rolex aside from the Deepsea watch that has a case this large.) The case, which is water-resistant to 100 meters (330 feet) includes a Triplock screw-down winding crown, a sapphire crystal protecting the dial, and a screw-down steel caseback shielding the movement.

Rolex Yacht-Master II 116680

On top of that generously sized case is a blue Cerachrom ceramic bezel, which is resistant to both scratching and fading. Finally, the Yacht-Master II 116680 is fitted with a sporty Oyster bracelet in stainless steel, complete with a folding Oysterlock safety clasp equipped with the Easylink 5mm comfort extension link for micro-adjustments on the go.

There Are Two Dial Versions of the YM II 116680

Despite the fact that the Yacht-Master II ref. 116680 is a young Rolex reference, the watch has already undergone a dial revamp. In 2017, Rolex furnished all Yacht-Master II models with a designed dial–but kept their original reference numbers.

rolex yacht master 2 investment

What changed with the new 2017 Yacht-Master II dial?

  • The square hour markers at 12 and 6 o’clock have been replaced by an inverted triangle and a rectangle, respectively.
  • The thin baton hands have been replaced by the iconic Mercedes-style hands.

Everything else remains the same, which is to say that the Yacht-Master II ref. 116680 features a crisp white dial with blue accents and flashes of red. Moreover, the dial comes alive in low-light with blue-colored Chromalight luminescence.

Caliber 4161 is Based on the Daytona’s Caliber 4130

Powering the Yacht-Master II ref. 116680 is Caliber 4161, which is based on the famed Caliber 4130 of the Rolex Daytona . Like Caliber 4130, Caliber 4161 has a traversing column wheel and vertical clutch, which provides an instantaneous and precise chronograph start.

rolex yacht master 2 investment

However, while the Daytona chronograph serves to measure elapsed times, the Yacht-Master II is a regatta chronograph with a countdown timer–a function specifically developed for competitive sailors. The countdown display, which is arched above the center hands, can be programmed from 10 to 1 minutes to permit skippers to follow a regatta’s official starting procedure. Plus, once launched, the countdown can also be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

It’s important to note that the release of the ref. 116680 in 2013 debuted the upgraded Caliber 4161 as previous versions of the Yacht-Master II were equipped with Caliber 4160.

Naturally, like all modern Rolex watches , the Yacht-Master II is chronometer-certified as indicated by the “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” label on the dial. Caliber 4161 supplies the Yacht-Master II with approximately 72 hours of power reserve.

The Ring Command Bezel Interacts With the Movement

Another impressive aspect of the Yacht-Master II’s functionality is that the 90° rotating bezel interacts with the movement inside the watch. Turning the bezel is how the user accesses and locks the countdown program.

The only other Rolex model with a Ring Command style bezel is the Sky-Dweller watch .

The Yacht-Master II 116680 is Rolex’s Most Expensive Steel Sports Watch

As one of the most technically advanced, newest, and larger Rolex models in the brand’s catalog, it’s not surprising that the Yacht-Master II is also one of the priciest in the lineup. The stainless steel Yacht-Master II ref. 116680 retails for $18,750 but pre-owned versions are typically less expensive in the secondary luxury watch market .

How does the Yacht-Master II’s price compare to other current-production steel Rolex sports watches? The steel Daytona ref. 116500LN retails for $13,150, the steel Deepsea ref. 126660 retails for $12,600, the steel GMT-Master II ref. 126710 retails for $9,700, and the steel (no-date) Submariner ref. 124060 retails for $8,100.

rolex yacht master 2 investment

In short, the Yacht-Master II is the most expensive stainless steel Rolex sports watch in the current catalog–if we’re just comparing retail prices. Of course, those who are familiar with Rolex watches know that prices for highly popular steel sports watches like the GMT-Master II, Submariner, and Daytona are valued above retail in the secondary market due to insatiable demand.

With its bold aesthetic and technically innovative mechanics, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is clearly quite different from other more mainstream sports watches from the Crown . Yet, it is precisely the Rolex Yacht-Master II ref. 116680’s originality that has attracted a cult following.

Yacht-Master II

rolex yacht master 2 investment

THE SKIPPERS’ WATCH

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II is a unique regatta chronograph dedicated to both experienced sailors and yachting enthusiasts.

rolex yacht master 2 investment

A PROFESSIONAL REGATTA CHRONOGRAPH

As in any contest of speed, precision and synchronization are of the essence in a regatta. The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a countdown that can be programmed from 10 to 1 minutes, allowing the wearer to precisely time and follow each race’s specific official starting procedure, which generally unfolds in three stages, marked by sound and visual signals. This flexibility is one of the major assets of the Yacht-Master II; its development was a considerable mechanical challenge. Furthermore, the programming can be mechanically memorized, which makes it possible to start a new countdown without having to reprogramme the watch, for example in the next leg or a subsequent regatta with identical countdown duration.

Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official countdown via the ‘fly-back’ reset function of the seconds hand and adjustment of the countdown minute hand to the nearest minute.

RING COMMAND SYSTEM

The countdown’s sophisticated functions were designed to be easily set and operated. The preliminary programming of up to 10 minutes is accessed, and then locked, via the rotatable bezel thanks to Ring Command, a system of interaction between the bezel, the winding crown and the movement, developed by Rolex. Its development, a feat of technical prowess, was made possible by the brand’s complete in-house mastery over the design and manufacturing processes, from the case and bracelet to the movement with its many components.

BEZEL WITH CERACHROM INSERT

The bidirectional rotatable bezel on the Yacht-Master II is equipped with a monobloc Cerachrom insert in blue ceramic. This patented insert is made of an extremely hard, virtually scratchproof ceramic whose colour is unaffected by ultraviolet rays. In addition, thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic is inert and cannot corrode. The numerals and inscriptions are moulded in the ceramic and coloured with gold or platinum using a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) process.

CHROMALIGHT DISPLAY

The Yacht-Master II is an extremely legible watch in all circumstances and even in the dark thanks to the Chromalight display; the hour markers and hands are filled or coated with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting blue glow – for up to two times longer than traditional phosphorescent materials.

THE YACHT-MASTER II, SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFIED

Like all Rolex watches, the Yacht-Master II is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This exclusive designation attests that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories and according to its own criteria. These certification tests are carried out on the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

The precision of every movement – officially certified as a chronometer by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) – is tested a second time by Rolex after being cased, to ensure that it meets criteria for precision that are far stricter than those of the official certification. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day – the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone.

The Superlative Chronometer certification testing is carried out after casing using state-of-the-art equipment specially developed by Rolex and according to an exclusive protocol that simulates the conditions in which a watch is actually worn and more closely represents real-life experience. The entirely automated series of tests also checks the waterproofness, the self-winding capacity and the power reserve of 100 per cent of Rolex watches. These tests systematically complement the qualification testing upstream during development and production, in order to ensure the watches’ reliability, robustness, and resistance to strong magnetic fields and to shocks.

THE OYSTER CASE, SYMBOL OF WATERPROOFNESS

The Yacht-Master II’s Oyster case, 44 mm in diameter and guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet), is a paragon of robustness and reliability. The middle case is crafted from a solid block of Oystersteel or 18 ct gold. The case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only certified Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The Triplock winding crown, fitted with a triple waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case. It is protected by a crown guard that is an integral part of the middle case. The crystal is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and benefits from an anti-reflective coating. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimal protection for the movement it houses .

PERPETUAL CALIBRE 4161

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with calibre 4161, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. A consummate demonstration of technology, this movement offers outstanding performance, particularly in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability.

Calibre 4161 is based on the 4130 chronograph movement, which equipped the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona until 2022. It is fitted with a traversing column wheel and vertical clutch for an instantaneous and extremely precise chronograph start.

The movement incorporates the blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy. In addition to resisting strong magnetic fields, this hairspring offers great stability in the face of temperature variations as well as high resistance to shocks. It is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position.

The oscillator of calibre 4161 has a large balance wheel with variable inertia regulated extremely precisely via gold Microstella nuts. It is held firmly in place by a height-adjustable traversing bridge enabling very stable positioning to increase shock resistance.

Calibre 4161 is fitted with a self-winding system via a Perpetual rotor, which ensures continuous winding of the mainspring by harnessing the movements of the wrist to provide constant energy. It offers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours.

The Yacht-Master II’s movement will be seen only by certified Rolex watchmakers, yet it is beautifully finished and decorated in keeping with the brand’s uncompromising quality standards.

BRACELET AND CLASP, SECURE AND COMFORTABLE

The Yacht-Master II is available on a three-piece link Oyster bracelet that is equipped with a Rolex-designed, patented Oysterlock safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. The bracelet is additionally fitted with the Easylink comfort extension link, developed by the brand. This system allows the wearer to easily increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, for additional comfort in any circumstance.

Is rolex yacht master 2 a good investment?

Yes. The Rolex Yacht-Master is a good investment for collectors for two main reasons. For one, these watches have historically held great value because of their uniqueness and sportiness; however, at the present time, they remain somewhat undervalued compared to their siblings in the Rolex catalog.

No Price Increase for the Rolex Yacht-Master II in 2022 To kick off the new year, Rolex raised its retail prices for 2022. The price increase can be seen across Rolex's entire catalog, and virtually every single model saw its retail price go up for 2022 - except the Yacht-Master II.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II, pre-facelift model, now discontinued .

No 2022 Price Increase for Rolex Yacht-Master II Watches However, it isn't likely that Rolex would discontinue the Yacht-Master II altogether , so I have a feeling that we will be seeing a whole new generation of Rolex's regatta timer at Watches & Wonders Geneva in a couple weeks.

Among the Rolex catalog, the Yacht Master II collection is a standout, and among the Yacht Master II's, the white gold and platinum combination, reference 116689, is quite possibly the most remarkable.

Retail prices for Rolex Yacht-Master II watches starts at $18,750 for the stainless steel model with a blue Cerachrom bezel , and increase from there with the use of precious metals. The most expensive Yacht-Master II model is the solid 18k white gold and platinum version, which costs $48,150 when purchased brand new.

Professional models from Rolex come with 12 links plus the end link and either EasyLink extension system.

As a general rule, steel Rolex sports watches reliably hold or appreciate in value. This includes, in particular, the GMT-Master II with its famous two-coloured bezel, the Cosmograph Daytona, and the ever-popular Submariner 16610.

Your Rolex price could increase in value over the years . But there is no exact formula to determine if a particular Rolex model will go up or not. Some Rolex watches become more expensive when they acquire vintage status. Others raise in value because they are made in Oystersteel.

Rolex prices likely to rise as demand shows no sign of easing in 2022 .

Is yacht-master hard to get?

The Yachtmaster course is undeniably difficult ; much more difficult than I had anticipated. But that is what Yachtmaster prep courses are for.

Discontinued Rolexes in 2022: Oyster Perpetual 124300 (41mm, turquoise, coral red or yellow dial), 126000 (36mm, coral red or yellow dial), 277200 (31mm, coral red or yellow dial) Deepsea 126660 (replaced by 136660) Air King 116900 (replaced by 126900) Day-Date 40 platinum 228206 (replaced by 228236)

Is rolex yacht master 2 a good investment? (2024)

Discontinued Rolex models for 2022 include the legacy Air King reference, colorful dial Oyster Perpetual 41 references, and Deepsea references .

Secondly, the Rolex Yacht-Master is a luxury watch and is often outfitted in precious metals. These precious metals inherently allow it to hold great value as the years go on , and its premium construction guarantees that it will always be worth something.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II is a sport watch made by Rolex, unveiled in 2007 and first introduced in March 2010 with the models 116688 (Yellow Gold) and 116689 (White Gold). One year later, in 2011, Rolex introduced the model 116681 which was made from steel and everose gold.

As its name would suggest, the Rolex Yacht-Master was developed as a tool-watch for sailing , offering water-resistance up to 100 meters (330 feet) via a Triplock screw-down crown, a highly legible dial, and a bidirectional rotating timing bezel.

How to set your Rolex Yacht-Master II - YouTube

FAKE or REAL? Rolex Yacht-Master - YouTube

What Is The Cheapest Rolex. The cheapest Rolex is the 36mm Oyster Perpetual which costs $5,800 MSRP. The Oyster Perpetual is a no date stainless steel sports model that is considered the most affordable or entry level men's Rolex.

The crown is completely screwed down against the case. When the crown is in this position, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet) .

Which is better Jubilee or Oyster bracelet?

They are both made from Rolex's solid and durable Oystersteel, 904L which will last you a lifetime and more! The jubilee does tend to hide scratches better than the oyster bracelet due to there being less surface area to make contact with on the jubilee since it is made up of tiny arches.

The prestigious President bracelet of a Day-Date also has a total of 22 links , not counting the two end links.

Rolex watches are an excellent investment, but some are more valuable than others . The best pre-owned Rolex watches for investment are the Daytona, Explorer II, Submariner, and Day-Date President. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual, Sea-Dweller and Datejust are also among the best pre-owned Rolex models worth investment.

When you wear your Rolex daily, you don't need to wind it . If you take it off and set it aside, the watch will retain its “charge” for two days or more, depending on the model.

This year, Rolex consolidated the GMT-Master II collection. A total of four references were discontinued , including the Ref 116710LN. Not only that, the steel models are now only available on Jubilee bracelets. And all models are only available with bi-colour ceramic bezels.

Rolex Green Submariner (The Hulk) With the launch of the innovative Submariner 41 collection, Rolex has inevitably discontinued the existing Submariner Date 11661x and Submariner 114060 versions.

Will the second hand Rolex bubble burst in 2022? Not likely , if the results from one of the first major auctions this year are an indicator of what's to come.

Here's what we know about the price hike The 4.2% increase may not affect long-term collectors . The Ref. 124060 Rolex Submariner (from the Professional Collection) was earlier priced at $8,100 in 2021. Its price has increased by 10.5% amounting to $8,950 in the US market this year.

If the Rolex Submariner is your dream watch and you have the financial means, don't hesitate to buy one in 2022 . I don't anticipate Rolex watches to drop abruptly in value anytime soon. And even if prices do ultimately go down for some reason, you'll already be wearing the timeless icon you've always dreamed of.

Is there a Rolex shortage?

In a year marked by shortages, one in particular is not like most of the others. Although the supply of Rolex watches may have briefly been disrupted by production and supply chain problems at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic , that's not the reason they're so hard to find – or so expensive when you do locate one.

Sea time requirements for the Yachtmaster Offshore exam All completed within the last 10 years: 50 days at sea on yachts upto 500GT and a minimum of 2,500 miles logged before you sit the exam . At least half the sea time must be in tidal waters. During this time you would have completed five passages of over 60 miles**.

The Yacht-Master's bezel is bidirectional with 60-minute graduations that are raised and polished to stand out clearly. The Yacht-Master is 100-meter water-resistant compared to the Submariner's 300-meter water-resistant case .

It is a comprehensive theory and live aboard course consisting of five days classroom theory and a practical component of six days for sail or five days for power including the practical on the water examination . The minimum age to obtain this certification is 18.

Brand new color combinations, a revamped king, and the “most prestigious metal available." While the Watches & Wonders trade show in Geneva brings an avalanche of new pieces from nearly every watchmaker on the planet, none are quite as eagerly anticipated as the Crown's.

The most notable discontinued models are some dial variations of the Oyster Perpetual 31, 36, and 41mm . Most importantly, perhaps the most sought-after watch in the whole of Rolex's collection, reference 124300 with turquoise “Tiffany” dial was discontinued. Only 2 years after first having been introduced in 2020.

Is a Rolex Air-King a good investment? The Rolex Air-King is a great investment piece . Because you can get this watch (retail or second-hand) at such a reasonable price point, it is a great watch to invest in if you do not want to spend too much money but still get a beautiful, timeless, and valuable Rolex.

How much is my Rolex Yachtmaster worth?

All Rolex Yacht-Master II models come in the same 44mm case size . Models are available in the following metals: Yellow Gold. White Gold and Platinum.

Unlike the Submariner, the Yacht-Master's water resistance is “only” 100 meters . This means that the Yacht-Master is not designed to be a professional dive watch, which requires water resistance of at least 200 meters.

The Rolex Yacht-Master is a luxury sports watch manufactured by Rolex and first introduced in 1992 as Reference 16628 in 18-karat yellow gold.

Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Ultimate Buying Guide

Rolex Yacht Master 40 Buying Guide

If you could buy a Rolex watch for yourself, which would it be? We guess most people would have a long list. However, most people wouldn’t think to choose the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 – a hidden jewel in the Rolex professional line up in a 40mm stainless steel case.

To take you back in time, Rolex Yacht-Master (YM) was in development for a while. It’s regarded as one of the most demanding watches produced by Rolex and took several years to finish. Its concept was born as early as the mid-1960s, but it wasn’t until the 1990’s that the model was officially released to the market.

With its updated styling and re-engineered mechanical movements, the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 is a unique watch that straddles style and luxury at a comparatively lower price. Below, we’ll discuss the Rolex Yacht-Master 40, and provide expert tips when buying the watch.

Rolex Yacht-Master 40: An Ultra-Modern Design

A line up of the Oyster Perpetual family, Rolex Yacht master 40 collection is a series of watches with a unique design built to withstand the elements. It was originally designed for diving enthusiasts but is refined enough to fit the daily wearer.

The Yacht-Master 40 was first introduced in the 90s. Since then, it has undergone several upgrades. One of the first products of the YM line is the ref. 16628 in 18k yellow gold. In 1999, amidst the Y2K bug, the brand introduced another line in caliber 3135 movement – the ref. 16622. Instead of an 18k yellow gold, the watch boasts stainless steel material with a platinum bezel. Back then, the watch model was touted as the “celebrity favorite” as Phil Collins, Bruce Willis, and other personalities were spotted wearing it.

Fast forward to 2012, the ref. 116622 was born. It still had the platinum dial but with some distinctive configuration, such as the shimmering effect and a glittering finish. Finally, the 126622 joined the Rolex catalog in 2019. The best thing about this watch is that it offers an Oysterflex bracelet option that allows for increased flexibility without sacrificing comfort or style.

With its evolution, the Rolex Yacht Master 40 is a stunning watch with an elegant and stylish design, perfect for any occasion. Above all, it has all of the features you would expect from a luxury watch brand like Rolex:

  • The 40 mm Oyster case exemplifies solid craftsmanship and elegance.
  • It comes with a sapphire crystal that protects its face from scratches.
  • The model also features an automatic movement with a date display at 3 o’clock on the dial.
  • The bezel is made of ceramic and titanium, which makes it incredibly strong and durable.
  • Rolex Yacht-Master 40 watch comes with an Oyster Steel bracelet that is resistant to rust and corrosion.
  • With a folding Oysterlock safety clasp, you can easily put on or remove it without worrying about it falling off.
  • As the name implies, this watch is popular with yachtsmen because it has high water resistance and a rotating bezel.

Reasons To Buy a Rolex Yacht-Master 40

As a successful person, we know you’ll choose to grab a Rolex – specifically a YM 40 model due to its bolder look. Beyond that, there are several reasons to buy a YM 40 watch.

What To Look For When Buying a Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Watch

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 is essentially a luxury yacht on your wrist. It’s bold, powerful, and gives you the feeling of freedom. However, there are a few things that you need to know before you purchase this hefty piece. If you take the time to check out these few tips, it will make it much easier for you to get one of these watches and enjoy the lifestyle that comes with it.

Examine the Condition of the Watch

Like most things in life, the condition affects the value of a Rolex watch. It’s especially important if you’re looking to purchase a pre-owned Rolex Yacht-Master 40. Mostly, you’ll look for one in excellent condition and priced below the high end of reasonable. However, these watches are rare and are almost impossible to find.

Nevertheless, when you buy, thoroughly check the condition of the watch, such as:

  • The bezel, crystal, or bracelet should be free from deep scratches.
  • There should be no stains, marks, or corrosion on the dial and markers.
  • The links in the bracelet should be snug and not loose or stretched out.

Additionally, watch boxes and maintenance documentation come with new YM 40 watches. However, if a pre-owned watch doesn’t have paperwork that comes with it, the only way to ensure authenticity is to be very knowledgeable about the model. In addition, reputable sources like Bob’s Watches offer at least a year’s warranty.

Be Alert on Spotting Fakes

Yacht-Master 40 (or Rolex watches, in general) are a good business due to their quality and price. That’s why many people get the opportunity to sell imitations to make money.

With that in mind, here are tips on what to look for when trying to spot the real deal:

  • The watch’s weight speaks of the quality materials used to create it. Thus, if it’s a light one, it means they’re made of low-quality materials.
  • The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 is remarkable, so its second-hand movement is smooth and not choppy.
  • It has a completely clear and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. A watch with a tinted or chipped crystal is probably fake.
  • Genuine YM 40 watches are made of precious metals. They feature a variety of different styles, but they all have a silky-smooth finish to them. Fakes have a dull look.
  • The luminous markers should be visible in the dark, and the dial should be free of scratches or imperfections.
  • Ensure that the bezel is moving smoothly without catching or clicking.

Moreover, do your research and employ all the tactics you can to ensure you’re getting a genuine product. Any trace of imperfection that isn’t normal wear and tear should make you question the authenticity of the piece.

Shop from a Certified Seller

To save yourself from dealing with fake YM 40, always buy from a certified dealer. They are typically well-established businesses that have been selling fine timepieces for decades. They should be registered with their local government and have the proper tax paperwork available upon request.

A reputable watch dealer will have a professional staff, carry a large stock of new or pre-owned watches, have a warranty policy, and never be pushy or try to rush you into making a purchase. They should be familiar with the process and will keep you informed every step of the way. If you ever find yourself feeling uncomfortable or uncertain of the seller’s intentions, leave immediately.

While most people will say it’s pricey, you might be surprised to learn that they’re relatively affordable, especially compared to other Rolex watches. Depending on the model, age, and materials used, you can expect to pay between $5k and $50k for a new or used Rolex Yacht-Master 40.

Yacht-Master

Stay the course, mapping invisible routes.

For those at sea, staying the course is a constant challenge. Defying the laws of logic, bearings can be lost suddenly in difficult conditions, thus requiring adaptability and the capacity to react quickly. Since 1992, the Yacht-Master – equipped with a bidirectional rotatable bezel – has become the established watch of masterful sailors who know how to react in order to keep their heading, in any situation.

Technical and elegant, the Yacht-Master is a reliable nautical instrument.

Bidirectional rotatable bezel

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metal (gold or platinum) or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-technology ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt background. This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

Oysterflex bracelet

This technical bracelet, developed by Rolex and patented, singularly combines the robustness and reliability of a metal bracelet with the suppleness, comfort and aesthetics of an elastomer strap.
