Guide to Buying a Riviera Yacht

Guide to buying a Riviera yacht

January 30, 2019 | By: Alex Rowe , Riviera Yachts Specialist & Certified Professional Yacht Broker

Riviera Yachts is the largest and most awarded luxury yacht builder in Australia and a leader in the global marine industry. The name Riviera is synonymous around the world with quality, style, innovation, seakeeping ability and value.

Are you the market for a new or used Riviera and want to know more about the brand and their current models available? As an official sales representative for Riviera, I am very familiar with the brand and know their models inside and out.

Here’s what you need to know as you begin your search for the Riviera yacht that meets your needs:

What sets Riviera Yachts apart from other similar brands?

Riviera yachts are built in Australia where the seas are very rough, so they have been designed and built to withstand true, blue-water conditions. From a structural aspect, their design is second to none. Each Riviera yacht is built with a solid fiberglass bottom, forward watertight crash bulkheads, keels, and a fiberglass tabbed deck-to-hull joint. All of which combine to create one of the most rugged fiberglass hulls on the market today.

Riviera also embraces the latest navigational technology, with models that are equipped with joystick steering, digital switching, glass cockpit navigation, and Volvo Penta Integrated Propulsion System (IPS). Through the use of jack shafts in the pod drive installations, their models are able to maintain a balanced center of gravity and running attitude.

The interior design is also very impressive. The styling is richly contemporary, yet not faddish. The interior cabinetry is all handcrafted using real timber instead of MDF/artificial wood. In short, Riviera is designed and built to run correctly, is safe to move around on, and radiates beauty that will stand the test of time.

Lineup of Riviera Yachts

What should you consider when buying a used Riviera?

By design, Riviera is a fairly low-volume, semi custom builder. They do not want to be the biggest producer of luxury yachts. They just want to build the best luxury yacht in their class. Maintaining a low volume means that the market will never be flooded with used Rivieras for sale, thus retaining value better than the competition.

A properly maintained used Riviera will hold up very well over time, better than most, in both condition and resale value. However, as with any used boat, you should hire a good marine surveyor to thoroughly inspect the vessel. Hiring a yacht broker when purchasing a used boat is always a good idea, as your broker will connect you with reputable marine professionals that can accurately report on its condition.

Reviewed: Riviera 6000 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition

  • By Kevin Koenig
  • Updated: February 7, 2020

The Australian builder Riviera has always occupied an interesting niche in the world of yachting. The company epitomizes the Australian ethos of building rugged, do-it-yourself vessels that can handle most any sea—yet it’s also a legitimate luxury brand, brandishing its bona fides in the fleet’s stitching, woodwork, and overall fit and finish.

Which is to say, Riviera doesn’t have many soft spots. That is why it’s exciting to see the builder challenge itself even further in creating the Platinum edition of its Sport Yachts series, including a 4800, a 5400 and the flagship of the line, the 6000.

I stepped aboard the hydraulic swim platform under blue-gray skies on a typically low-lit winter’s day on Sydney Harbour, and proceeded forward via the portside staircase leading to the cockpit (there’s a mirroring staircase to starboard that nicely aids with feng shui). The steps are on both sides of a tender garage with a Muir winch and LED lighting that can fit a RIB up to 10 feet, 5 inches.

The cockpit itself is wholly devoted to entertaining. A transom barbecue with twin griddles, refrigerated compartments and a stainless-steel backsplash handles the alfresco cooking duties and serves an L-shaped dining settee to port. That settee has an adjustable teak table that allows it to convert to a sun pad once lunch has been served. There’s also a lounge opposite the settee. An electric sunshade overhead protects guests from ultraviolet rays as well as from sun-showers on days when there’s just enough drizzle to be annoying. Joystick control stations on both sides of the cockpit are a boon when docking—a touch not often seen on yachts of this size and class.

A glass bulkhead separates the cockpit and salon, though “separates” is perhaps not exactly the right word because the two areas are melded by a sliding glass door and a flip-up window above the aft galley (all framed in mirror 316 stainless steel). The aft-galley setup makes the space more informal and open to conviviality, and can serve the salon and cockpit equally.

The salon has standard high-gloss walnut that really shines when it comes to joinery, pun not intended. Riviera builds its boats in Coomera, Queensland, where it runs an apprenticeship program for boatbuilders. The program helps ensure its employees have a high degree of construction knowledge and craftsmanship.

A formal dining settee to port is forward, across from the helm, and there is a sofa to starboard at amidships. All the seats in the salon are at a height that allows good sightlines out the windows, so everyone can enjoy the view no matter where they are sitting.

The twin Recaro helm seats also enjoy excellent sightlines, something that was extremely helpful as I wheeled the nimble boat through a busy Sydney Harbour and out to the rolling Pacific 3s and 4s. There, the Riviera’s hand-laid, vinylester-resin hull proved sturdy and quiet, not to mention soft-riding as she rose and fell with the well-spaced-out swells. With twin 725 hp Volvo Penta IPS950s churning below our feet, we saw a 28-knot top speed and cruised at 21 knots. Range at the latter speed is 370 nautical miles, or about the distance from Miami to Jacksonville, Florida.

If you did decide to cruise that far, you could overnight in one of three layouts belowdecks. The Classic setup has an amidships master and forepeak VIP, as well as mirroring guest staterooms between them. An optional Lounge version replaces the portside guest stateroom with a lounge and TV, which is great if you’re traveling with kids because it gives them their own area to hang. Last, the Presidential option converts the portside guest stateroom into an en suite head for the master, which opens up the stateroom’s main living space, making it full beam.

As I stepped off the 6000 and watched her pull away, I admired her sleek appearance, accentuated by the Platinum Edition signature black-and-silver color scheme. Her oh-so-recognizable Riviera lines were apparent at a glance, yet the hot new paint job really made her dance. It was just another detail that shows how much Riviera Yachts understands that offering safety and performance is good, but putting it together in style is great.

Sisterships

Riviera’s Platinum series has two other modes: the 4800 Sport Yacht Series II and the 5400 Sport Yacht. The 4800 has twin

600 hp Volvo Penta IPS800s that give it a reported top hop of 35 knots and a 28-knot cruise. The 5400 has 725 hp Volvo Penta IPS950s the builder says provide a 34.5-knot top speed and 28-knot cruise. Both boats have the black-and-silver Platinum-series styling.

Steady as She Goes

The 6000’s side decks allow plenty of room to maneuver; I could put my heels on the superstructure and still had space for my size 12s. There are also nearly 3-foot-high, stainless-steel handrails going to the foredeck’s twin sun pads. Also up front is a Muir stainless-steel anchoring

system. The attention to crew safety and comfort—and the less glamorous aspects of yachting, like docking—is evident throughout the yacht’s design.

riviera 78 motor yacht open 01

Riviera 78, the biggest, most expensive Riviera yet, revealed

Riviera is about to usher in a new era for the luxury motor yacht maker, revealing the riviera 78 flagship.

Riviera plans to launch its biggest and most expensive luxury motor yacht yet early next year with the reveal last night of an all-new flagship – the Riviera 78.

Described as the boat that will usher in a new era for the brand, the new model was revealed last night at the global launch of the Riviera 645 SUV at the 2021 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

More than 17 months in development and a closely guarded secret known to few people outside of the Gold Coast luxury motor yacht maker, the new flybridge model will cost around $5.5 million in standard trim.

On release, the boat will have a high level of standard equipment including carbon-fibre stabiliser fins – the Riviera 78 will be a true long-range bluewater cruiser.

Hull No.1 will be specified for the US market and will include two 27kW gensets. The model teased last night features an enclosed flybridge, but Riviera will also offer an "open fly" version for owners who prefer the open air.

Styled by Italian superyacht designer Luca Vallebona, it features a single hull window, four staterooms, a highly user-friendly cockpit, a bow lounge, and a large flybridge that can bring the outdoors inside via large drop-down windows, a sunroof, and a glass bulkhead that folds away.

The Riviera 78 uses an extended version of the hull that sits under the smaller Riviera 68 and 72 models.

Just like other Rivieras, this will be a sports yacht that will happily stretch its legs. The standard MAN 1550s that will power it will be good for extracting between 1000 to 1500 nautical miles out of the 10,500-litre onboard fuel capacity, yet will still hit a top speed of around 28 knots when asked.

An upgrade to V12 MAN 2000s also will be available, with the Riviera 78’s top speed estimated at around 34 knots. Cruising speed for this configuration is expected to be around 26 knots.

Riviera said options for the main saloon will include dining and lounge spaces or simply acting as the grand lounge with dining focused on the aft deck which can be semi-enclosed, covered entirely by the bridge deck overhang and protected by optional clears.

“The large U-shape galley, with twin ovens, four-burner hob, comprehensive refrigeration and storage capabilities, has been positioned as a centrepiece of the entertaining spaces,” it said.

“An internal timber staircase leads from the port side of the main saloon to the bridge deck which also offers lounge, entertaining and dining spaces. A bar is built into the aft deck and a day head is optional.

It said the highly versatile foredeck offered a number of entertaining layouts and a Euro sun awning with the option to carry a tender or jetski and davit.

“An elegant curved timber staircase from the forward end of the main saloon leads to the accommodation deck with its four staterooms and three bathrooms.

“The full-beam master suite amidships is bathed with natural light from extended hull windows. It provides an electrically adjustable king-size bed and extended his-and-hers en-suite bathroom.

“The VIP guest stateroom fitted with a queen double bed and also benefiting from hull windows is forward, with an en-suite bathroom.

“The port stateroom offers the option of a double bed or twin beds that can slide together. The starboard stateroom includes two single cross-over berths.

“A third bathroom is shared and can act as a day head.”

The ability to upsize comes as Riviera further expands its Gold Coast manufacturing plant to add a 110-metre-long laminating shed and increase its workforce by another 34 apprentices.

The 2021 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show starts today.
