Absolute 52 Fly

Absolute Yachts ’ most recent model is the 52 Fly, which rolled out at the 2023 Miami International Boat Show. From the first step aboard, it was clear the Italian builder had sweated not only the details, but also pushed the genre ahead of its competition.

The hull’s glazing, resembling a short, tanto-bladed knife and a vertical bow up front, also added to the contemporary design. Undulating LED lighting inlays in the cockpit overhang imparted a cool, sophisticated look to the space. At the same time, a starboard-side docking station spoke to this boat’s bona fides as a serious cruising machine.

The salon also had design touches that one might not expect to find on a 52-ft. semi-custom build. The aft galley had a four-burner Bosch cooktop and a six-foot-tall, stacked refrigerator and freezer that is useful for longer trips. The drawers all had chic leather tabs as handles, extending a beach-like, elegant vibe to the space.

Absolute 52 Fly flybridge motoryacht

The starboard-side helm was another place onboard that feels just a little bit different than the standard offerings in this size and class.

Twin Garmin screens were angled off in a small arc, as opposed to facing straight back, which gave them a slightly futuristic feel. Tightly stitched helix patterns in the seat-backs of the helm chairs pointed towards a high level of fit and finish.

A sturdy door next to the helm led to the side deck. Perhaps most important for the helmsperson, the Volvo Penta joystick control was maneuverable while standing on that side deck. The joystick and cockpit control station should make docking this boat easier than a conventional setup.

One of the other significant layouts was the flybridge. Absolute managed to make it look stylish and large, without appearing top heavy. The design included a large forward lounge surrounding the helm station, with back-to-front seats to port, and an L-shaped lounge extending back to the transom, with a center dining table. The side island with fridge can also double as a serving station. The overhead hardtop had an opening center window, and stereo speakers were embedded into the bridge.

Our final impression after a tour aboard: The Absolute 52 Fly was more than the sum of its parts. The boat was full-featured without looking crowded, but also highly functional. This 52-footer was clearly ready for a weekend cruise or extended voyage. The Italian builder proved that a well-conceived design makes for a well-rounded boat.

All-New Absolute 52 FLY Review (2022 Edition)

The Absolute 52 Fly arrives with a fresh look and a stunning three-cabin interior. Have we got a new leader of the pack on our hands?

All-New Absolute 52 FLY Review (2022 Edition) image 1

The 2022/2023 generation of Absolute flybridge boats are some of the best the Italian shipyard has ever designed. The 52 Fly may be sub-55ft but it feels huge on board and boasts an interior layout so effective it makes you wonder why other boats in this sector aren't using the same blueprint.

As with every other modern Absolute, it's only available with Volvo Penta IPS but this is what grants the designers so much accommodation space to play with on the lower deck and it should be good for a reliable 22-knot top speed and a cruising range of 250nm. We'll put those claims to test on our upcoming sea trial but, for now, we caught up with the boat at the 2023 Miami Boat Show, where it had its global debut, to see how it stacks up.

Design & Build

Absolute 52 Fly at anchor

This generation of Absolute flybridge has a distinctive look with oversized hull windows and fin-style open haunches that aim to maintain the connection between the cockpit and the water. The boats are not classically handsome but the look is more refined than it was a few years ago and there's no doubt that they have a distinctive look that is all their own.

On board, the use of space is truly outstanding and the volume of the interior is astonishing. By arranging the owner's cabin on a mid-deck forward, you get both a wonderful space for the owner and guests are treated to a fabulous full-beam VIP amidships.

Modular deck furniture is another feature of this generation of Absolute, adding great flexibility to the cockpit and flybridge. As standard, the decks are empty to fill with any furniture the owner desires but to make life easy Absolute provides some on request and it's as stylish as it is flexible.

Absolute builds all of its boats using its Integrated Structural System (ISS). The interiors are cut and assembled separately to the hulls and dropped in once constructed, pre-prepared with wiring and plumbing. It's an efficient build method, which, according to Absolute, improves the accuracy of the build and maintains a more consistent level of quality. You can't be definitive about quality from the safety of a boat show berth but there is certainly a feeling of real cohesion aboard the 52 Fly and reassuring solidity in everything from the flooring to the way the internal doors clunk shut. It feels like a quality machine.

Absolute pays attention to the little things that make life on board easier. It's small things like having a dedicated slot for the boat hook adjacent to the flybridge steps in the cockpit and the smart stainless steel hoop that slots into the bathing platform to give swimmers something to grab onto when they emerge from the sea.

This will be an owner-run boat for the majority so ease of maintenance is key and to that end the machinery space is impressive. With both the generator and optional Seakeeper stabiliser space is a little tight at the entrance to the engine room but access to the engines and IPS pods is excellent and the quality and tidiness of installation are top-notch. The 52 Fly should be an easy boat to live with and look after.

Absolute's range is an IPS-only zone so if you don't like the idea of pod drives the 52 isn't for you. That said, the integration of Volvo's pods is faultless and it's part of the reason why the designers have so much space to play with on the lower deck.

Interior Accommodation

absolute 52 Fly Master Cabin

The interior is the 52 Fly's trump card, it's hard to compute quite how Absolute has managed to include three cabins and two bathrooms and endow them with so much space. There isn't a boat in the sector that uses the footprint as cleverly as this.

The main deck salon is familiar Absolute with its aft galley, two-part sliding cockpit door and a window section that drops into the counter to create a small bar area.  The galley is split with the counter, sink, hob, cooker and a good amount of storage space to port and a full-height fridge/freezer and pantry to starboard. Detail is excellent. The soft rounding of corners, the subtle integration of a handhold into the edge of the galley counter and the chest forward of the fridge/freezer that contains fiddled storage for all of the Absolute branded crockery and glassware.

The 52 has a new lighting design throughout, with attractive waves of LED in the deck head above the cockpit and aft end of the salon and a new circular motif above the dinette that is cleverly mirrored in the hard top on the flybridge.

The windows on both sides of the salon drop down to allow the natural breeze to run through the boat. We've seen this feature before on Absolutes and it means that on days that aren't too hot, you may be able to use these to ventilate the boat rather than firing up the air-con (and therefore the generator).

The television is neatly hidden on a pop-up mechanism behind the sofa to starboard, opposite a large dinette with a hi-lo table that can easily switch from dining to coffee table height.

The lower deck layout works brilliantly because by shifting the owner's cabin to a mid-deck forward, the VIP cabin can occupy the full width of the beam amidships. It's a similar layout to Absolute's own 56 Fly without the ensuite bathroom for the VIP cabin. This arrangement benefits the owner as much as their guests, though, because the space and comfort levels in the owner's suite are excellent. As are the views, thanks to those enormous hull windows. With the bed (2,000mm x 1,600mm) mounted aft on the centreline, the bow is full of bathroom and it works really well, delivering a smartly finished ensuite that uses the geometry of the cabin intelligently. The attention to fine detail is excellent once again, right up there with the best in this sector.

The VIP could be another owner's suite and in fact, if you're sleeping on anchor or are tied to a buoy, it may be the place to sleep as you won't get the slapping of water on the hull that you do up front. There is an intrusion towards the top of the bed that those 6ft or over will need to watch out for but apart from that it's a very easy cabin to move around inside and it's dotted with plenty of useful storage solutions. The lack of an ensuite may put some people off but the day head, shared with the twin cabin, isn't far away.

The twin cabin is well thought out as well. Headroom is good and, as standard, you get electric sliding berths (1,940mm x 670mm) that switch from twins to a double at the touch of a button. Rival boats offer this but most as a cost option. It also has direct access via a small door to the void beneath the owner's cabin, offering excellent access to the bow thruster for those maintaining the boat and some very useful bag storage for those sleeping in this cabin.

The crew accommodation aft is just about spacious enough to work as an occasional cabin but very few of these boats will be run with the crew. The best option is probably to have the space lined out for storage but keep the bathroom so that those who've been for a swim can go to the toilet and have a shower without traipsing water through the interior of the boat.

Absolute 52 Fly main deck

Helm Station

Absolute 52 Fly Helm Station

Absolute's helms were the best in the business before it came up with this all-new design for the 52 and, somehow, it's made them even better. The lower helm is particularly good thanks to its beautifully clean design with a pair of angled pods that direct the MFDs towards the skipper and create a driver-focussed, cockpit-like feel. The twin helm seats are adjustable and have a bolster section so you can stand at the helm and drive; the relationship between the adjustable steering wheel, throttles and IPS joystick is absolutely perfect.

There is the option of a third control station in the cockpit is welcome but with the joystick at the lower helm positioned so closely to the side door, it's a brilliant spot to moor the boat from and the all-around view is excellent. There aren't boarding gates on either side of the cockpit but having them amidships on both sides makes it far easier for the skipper to help out handling lines if they need to.

The upper helm isn't as stylish as the one downstairs but it has all of the same ergonomic touchpoints. A good example is the positioning of the throttles and joystick on the same moulding but the latter is mounted higher so you can reach it more easily when standing up and throttles are set low so they are more comfortable to reach when seated out at sea. Positioning the navigator's seat outside of the skipper's means that they can move in and out of the helm without disturbing the driver, too. It's all very well thought out and near impossible to fault.

Foredeck of Absolute 52 Fly

The cockpit follows a familiar form with its modular furniture and open haunches though there are some updates that are new for the 52. The lighting design in the overhang is fresh as is the small lip of the smoked glass and stainless steel that adds some protection to the open gunwales while maintaining the views out over the water.

Absolute's supplied furniture is lovely stuff that can be arranged in myriad ways, either as single armchairs or, because the armrests can be removed, sofas and day beds. It's so much more flexible and comfortable than a fixed bench. The open transom also means that those in the cockpit have a great view over the hydraulic bathing platform and can easily keep an eye on people in the water.

The side decks require a sideways shuffle to move along them as they aren't the widest in the class but with tall guardrails and toerails it feels perfectly safe to negotiate them. The 52 Fly has one of the best foredecks in the class. The side decks are linked by a passageway that splits the sofa and sun pad, which makes getting from one side of the boat to the other far easier. The sun pad has a clever hinged backrest which acts either as a headrest for sunbathers or creates a bench that faces aft to join the hi-lo teak table. The entire area can be shaded by a canopy that attaches to carbon fibre poles, which stow in the engine room.

Flying High

The flybridge feels large in this sector. The overhang extends a long way back and is square in its design so there is lots of space at the aft end for yet more free-standing furniture. A hard top is an option but there is no sunroof available on this model, just the potential to add 1,320W solar panels to top up the domestic energy supply. The lighting motif on the underside of the top is the same as in the salon, which is a nice touch. As is the way the wet bar has been so neatly integrated into the aft end of the dinette sofa. It's a well-designed bar with built-in storage for the liferaft and a useful open shelf to stow towels and other loose items. The sink is standard but you'll need to add the fridge and grill to make the most of it.

Forward, there is a big dinette with a handsome teak table on a fixed pedestal and a good spread of sunbathing space adjacent to the two-person helm station.

Value For Money

The base price of the 52 Fly at the time of writing is €1.34 million ex VAT but as with most of its competitors, there are a few options that need to be added to get it to a turn-key specification.

The hydraulic bathing platform would be worth adding for functionality as would the hard top, with or without the solar panels. Unless the extra berth is going to be of use then speccing the crew cabin to be lined out with the addition of the bathroom would be an effective use of this space and endow the boat with a vast amount of dry, easily accessed gear storage.

If you moor stern-to then the third control station in the cockpit is definitely worth thinking about, even with the view from both the lower and upper helms being so good. The Seakeeper is an expensive option but it does make a big difference to comfort levels when the boat is at anchor, so if you spend a lot of time doing that it's worth considering.

Ultimately the 52 Fly is at the more expensive end of the market but it feels like a quality product through and through.

Absolute 52 Fly exterior

It's impossible to come to a concrete conclusion about a boat without experiencing how it feels out at sea but the initial signs are very positive for the 52 Fly. Being a scaled-down version of the larger flybridge boats in the range is no bad thing because Absolute is on a roll at the moment and the three-cabin arrangement suffers very few compromises and sets the standard for space and comfort at this size of boat. The custom furniture arrangement on the deck allows for an impressive amount of customisation for a boat in this sector but you won't be disappointed with what Absolute offers, either. The attention to detail is excellent throughout and there are so many small touches that will make the boat a real joy to live with. We're yet to drive it but in every other area, the 52 Fly is as good as it gets.

Reasons to Buy

  • Voluminous interior
  • Versatile deck spaces
  • Quality and attention to detail
  • Spacious flybridge

Things to Consider

  • VIP cabin isn't ensuite

Naturally, the 52 Fly has a raft of rivals from competitor brands but look inside the Absolute stable first, shall we? The 56 Fly is the next rung on the Absolute flybridge ladder and the jump in price is around €200,000 so what are you getting for your money? Well, it's longer and wider so there is more space throughout, most noticeably on the flybridge and lower deck where you can get two crew berths instead of one and an extra bathroom for guests. Performance is likely to be pretty much identical, though the 52 could well be a bit punchier given it's lighter than the 56 but uses the same Volvo Penta IPS800 engines with 600hp. The question is, is the 56's biggest rival now the 52?

Outside of the Absolute stable, there is plenty to challenge the 52. Galeon's 500 Fly has been around a little while now but even the brilliantly versatile 52 Fly can get close the Galeon's outstanding beach club mode arrangement with drop-down terraces and a rotating transom seating arrangement that is a stroke of genius. It can, unlike the Absolute, also be had with a tender garage big enough for a Williams Minijet. Below deck, there are three cabins, including a full beam owner's suite amidships, a double VIP and a third cabin with a pair of bunks. It's available with a variety of Volvo Penta shaft drive engine options (D11 725s the pick) or IPS, though it's an expensive option. For sheer deck space, it's untouchable.

Azimut's 53 isn't as functional as the Absolute but with exterior design by Alberto Mancini and an eye-popping Achille Salvagni interior, it's a cracking-looking boat. It's all sharp lines and subtle curves in comparison to the bombastic Absolute, which is a more acquired taste. Like the 53 Fly, the Azimut has a three-cabin, two-bathroom layout with space for a single crew member aft but the interior design really is like nothing else in the market. The 53 also runs on IPS but the larger D11 725hp blocks of IPS950 so its top speed is more in the region of 32 knots and it will cruise a bit more quickly, too.

The Sunseeker Manhattan 55 (and its predecessor, the Manhattan 52) is one of the most popular boats that the Poole shipyard has ever produced. It's easy to see why given the mix of performance, style and interior space. Attention to detail and finish also took a marked turn for the better with the 55, too. Like the Galeon 500, it's available with IPS or shafts and will top out at around 32 knots. It's one of the more engaging boats in the sector to drive, too, as you expect of something wearing the Sunseeker crest. The layout is quite similar to the Absolute's, though there is more fixed furniture on the flybridge. It's a great all-rounder.

ABSOLUTE 52 FLY

The Absolute 52 Fly, presented in 2023, is the newest yacht in the Flybridge range. This yacht has been named the “Absolute direction”, because it has introduced an entirely new direction in luxury yachts, including a cutting-edge design with features that are normally found only on much larger yachts. In fact, alongside the characteristics that hallmark all Absolute yachts, such as ample headroom, floors with a minimum of steps, and the extensive use of sliding doors, the truly astonishing feat in the 52 Fly is the massive space throughout. The salon is roomy and beautifully detailed, served by a superbly-equipped galley that even has a large pantry and a full-height fridge-freezer. The full-beam owner stateroom is located in the bow location to ensure privacy and quiet, and it has a fine marble bathroom with extensive storage units. The VIP stateroom midships can be considered as a second master stateroom, with generous space and impeccable finish. The third guest cabin has twin berths, with good headroom and an electrically-operated system that enables its transformation into a double berth. Navetta 52 – known as the “Absolute Leader” – was designed to ensure high levels of cruising comfort in all conditions. The side decks are protected above by a cantilevered superstructure and at the side by sturdy bulwarks, and the cockpit terrace is also entirely covered by the flybridge. The same all-weather appeal can be seen on the foredeck, where the settee is shaded behind the loungers for soaking up the sun. The flybridge is exceptionally large, a privileged location for around-the-clock enjoyment, with a dinette, an outdoor galley, and an aft terrace area with moveable seating for maximum flexibility. The flybridge helm is accompanied by sofas for sailing with friends. Inside the main salon, the vast windows are accompanied by Absolute’s skill in sophisticated, minimalist interior design. The galley is positioned so that it can serve both the salon and the cockpit terrace, and if required it can be separated by electrically-operated vertical glass screens. The main helm station is modern and ergonomic, with a door opening onto the side deck so that the captain can use the joystick when outside during mooring.

Navetta 58, known as the “Absolute Appeal”, is a yacht very different from the traditional design standards, making it a true leader in its category. Its plumb bow and distinctive architecture ensure generous dimensions, as can be seen on the flybridge. This space has an aft area for relaxation, a central area with dinette and grill, and a flybridge helm station forward at the bow that includes additional seating comprising of two L-shaped settees. On the main deck, the cockpit terrace is furnished with a sofa and dining table, and it provides access to the salon, where the galley – whose facilities include a large worktop, a full-sized fridge, a four-burner hob, a sink and a dishwasher – is located just aft of the principal helm station. Below decks, accommodations consist of a master stateroom midships and a VIP suite in the bows, both with pillarless windows, spacious storage, en-suite bathrooms, and sophisticated furnishings. A third guest cabin has twin beds, seamlessly transformable to a double berth.

Small details, like being able to arrange your aft cockpit furniture on the 48 Coupe for conversations with friends, or the uninterrupted windows in the salon of the 60 FLY, separate Absolute from their competition. Absolute aspires to build the very best yachts that deliver the very best boating experiences possible while maintaining their individuality and artistic expressions.

The flagship model for Absolute is the stunning Navetta 73. With a length slightly over 73-feet and a beam over 18-feet, the volume each space possesses is substantial for its class. Comfort, Design, Innovation: The New Frontier of Absolute Luxury Yachts

absolute yachts photos

For twenty years, the shipyard in Piacenza, Northern Italy, has been a reference point for international boating. Here are the strengths of its luxury yachts.

Absolute yachts is an italian company that, since 2002, has been building luxury motor yachts between 47 to 73 feet . its three ranges— navetta , flybridge , and coupé —offer a high level of design and are the result of a completely internal production cycle focused on constant innovation..

Inside the Piacenza shipyard, the construction of luxury yachts revolves around three fundamental ideas: being a stimulus for the market by setting new ambitious goals; being able to surprise shipowners with increasingly higher levels of usability and autonomy; inspiring the shipyard itself in its constant effort to develop innovative models. This ambitious vision aims at combining beauty, design, and performance with other fundamental aspects such as livability, comfort, and safety.

Luxury yachts, Italian design

Thanks to the team of designers and the exquisitely skilled artisanal workers, the design of Absolute luxury yachts is recognized as an excellent example of Made in Italy . Valuable and exclusive characteristics define the exterior lines of all Absolute models. Such details are anything but trivial; the large windows without pillars offer, in fact, unprecedented views from both the salon and the cabins. Every year, this evolving design translates into new and intriguing features. To name a few: the charm of the side gunwales in the Navetta 64 , with sea views enjoyable directly from the cockpit; the glazed parapets on the new 60 FLY and 48 Coupé ; the solar panels and the side windows that can be widely open to convey the sea breeze inside the living room.

Versatile and livable luxury yachts

“What if you could sail away without ever feeling far from home?”

Beauty and practicality are the two essential requirements that find balance in our engineering and furniture solutions, making a luxury yacht the best premise for a vacation dedicated to family, friends, and total relaxation.

At a structural level, each space is designed to express its maximum potential and be fully enjoyable and exceptionally comfortable, especially when compared to yachts of similar or even greater size. For instance, the sliding doors below deck, the side door in the helm station—designed on all Absolute boats—and the large windows of the cabins and the salon are all remarkable engineering works that result from unique techniques and internal processes.

These luxury yachts express their highest value in usability. For example, their new modular furnishings allow you to configure the cockpit and the fly area according to your needs, the number of guests, and the time of day.

Absolute comfort for exclusive luxury yachts

Aboard the Absolute luxury yachts, accommodation is elevated to a higher level of comfort and elegance. The owner’s cabins become an actual owner’s quarter dedicated to relaxation, placed at the bow to offer maximum tranquility and privacy. These cabins are incomparably livable on every model of the Absolute range and are enriched by tasteful furnishings and refined details.

Luxury Yachts, reduced impact

Absolute makes luxury yachts with reduced environmental impact and solutions for making the boats one with nature. Aboard the new 48 Coupé, when in a roadstead, you can easily support the consumption of music, refrigeration, and other entertainment devices thanks to the solar panels integrated into the roof. At the same time, you will be caressed by the sea breeze in the living room by simply opening the side windows.

Innovation, sustainability, and the desire to transform onboard life have always been at the heart of the shipyard’s vision; however, they get a new face and strength today.

The 2022 nautical season starts having all this in mind. After the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Cannes Yacht Festival , a preview at the Absolute Weekend in Marina di Varazze revealed the new 60 FLY and 48 Coupé (the first model in the New Absolute Sports range).

These two new boats inherit the highest level of innovation achieved on the 2021 models: the 50 FLY and the award-winning Navetta 64. Moreover, they develop new top-notch features .

Enjoy the view aboard our new luxury yachts

Both on the cockpit and the fly area, the glazed parapets of the Absolute 60 FLY offer unparalleled views, while protecting incredibly roomy spaces, and are customizable with the new modular furnishings. The cockpit has no fixed elements and is configurable according to the actual use, so as to make every moment of the day perfect! Even below deck, the cabins are the ideal place to feel part of the landscape. The shipowner and the VIP cabin have large windows on both sides, obtained thanks to a special gluing match method between hull and deck that offer new solutions of the highest engineering value .

Absolute 72 Fly: An Absolute Must

  • By Kevin Koenig
  • Updated: September 21, 2016

Absolute 72 Flybridge yachts

To a certain extent, it’s true that each country builds yachts to particular stereotypes associated with its populace. Australians build rugged boats destined for adventure, while an Anglo fastidiousness pervades many British vessels. Americans, not surprisingly, are all over the board with our boats — a true melting pot. The same cannot be said for the Italians. In Italy, elegance reigns supreme. An example of this phenomenon is the 72 Fly from Absolute, which is headquartered an hour or so northeast of Genoa in the small town of Podenzano.

The thing that really draws you to the 72 is her lines. Low profile and aggressively swept back, the silhouette is that of a boat built to impress, both from afar and when on board.

Absolute 72 Flybridge yachts

The yacht has three outdoor entertaining areas. Her cockpit has a settee and dining table that makes an ideal place for an alfresco meal. The bow deck constitutes another outdoor space. There, a second dining settee is complemented by a sun pad, so you can perfect your tan while moored in some discrete cove off the Amalfi Coast. (How very Italian.)

Absolute 72 Flybridge yachts

But as nice as these areas are, it’s the namesake flybridge that represents the 72’s marquee spot to commune with the great outdoors. An ergonomic helm can seat two, so the captain won’t be left longing for company, and sight lines are excellent in all directions. A sprawling U-shaped settee to starboard creates the main social space, while a grill, sink and refrigerator to port make sure everyone stays refreshed.

Absolute 72 Flybridge yachts

Another sun pad forward and free space aft for lounge chairs or water toys round out the area. There’s also an outdoor shower built into the radar arch. And for my money, an outdoor shower is the best kind of shower, particularly after taking a dip in the ocean.

Absolute 72 Flybridge yachts

Indoors, the yacht is just as well-equipped. Absolute concentrated on making the salon both ergonomic and well-lighted. To the latter’s end, sizable windows serve not only to whittle down the boat’s profile, but also to let in tons of light. Below are four very private, very comfortable staterooms, though the full-beam, en suite master amidships will leave everyone on board feeling a bit jealous of the owners.

Absolute 72 Flybridge yachts

And jealousy, of course, is something that Italians are intimately familiar with, since the rest of the world envies their flair for the elegant.

Politics latest: Mordaunt responds to rumours of plot to oust Sunak

A former minister has warned Tory plotters against ousting Rishi Sunak in an election year, as his mooted replacement - Penny Mordaunt - gives short shrift to suggestions she could become prime minister.

There has been talk in recent days that Penny Mordaunt could be a possible replacement for Rishi Sunak if unhappy Tory MPs kick him out before the election.

But the Commons leader has insisted her focus is on the job in hand.

Reporters shouted questions to Ms Mordaunt as she left this morning's cabinet meeting.

As you would expect, they were about the suggestions she could step in if Mr Sunak is ousted.

"I'm getting on with my job and I recommend it," she replied.

A new Sky News series,  Faultlines , covers in-depth and immersive reports exploring contemporary social challenges across the UK.

This episode asks "is our housing market in crisis?", with not enough homes and expensive rentals forcing an increasing number of people into homelessness.

In 2021/22, just 7,528 new social homes were delivered - nowhere near enough for the 1.1 million people on the waiting list and the government’s target of building 300,000 new homes a year.

Seaside town Hastings is on the front line of all that is wrong with the housing system, with evictions, social housing shortages and Airbnb among the issues behind the problem.

On this episode of the Sky News Daily, Tom Cheshire talks to our people and politics correspondent Nick Martin in Hastings, to uncover the scale of the issues, and hear from those at the heart of it.

Ed Miliband has accused the Conservatives under Rishi Sunak of slipping from "climate delay to denial", as he made a pitch to voters on green issues.

The shadow energy security and net zero secretary claimed the PM was willing to stoke culture wars on climate change, but that did not reflect the views of British people and risked damaging the country's future.

But the Tories claimed Labour's plans to decarbonise the grid by 2030 - rather than 2035 as they have pledged - would see "costs implode" and raise taxes, while they had a plan to cut emissions in a "pragmatic way".

In a speech to the Green Alliance thinktank, Mr Miliband warned the forthcoming general election was the most important on climate and energy the UK has ever had.

He said: "There is a stark election choice: Labour's case for climate action as the route to lower energy bills, energy security, good jobs and doing our duties by future generations against a Conservative Party slipping from climate delay into denial which will mean higher bills, energy insecurity, fewer jobs and betrayal of future generations.

"Families across the country are united in their desire for good jobs, lower bills, cleaner water, and a green and pleasant home that we can leave for our children.

"Instead of embracing this mainstream majority, Rishi Sunak is willing to give up the fight for lower bills and energy security because he wants to stoke the fires of a culture war".

Earlier today, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak held his weekly meeting with members of his cabinet inside Number 10 Downing Street.

Despite a tough few weeks for him, and unrelenting talk of a Tory plot to oust him, Mr Sunak appeared in good spirits.

Here's what the gathering looked like in pictures:

One year ago, Rishi Sunak made five pledges for voters to judge him on.

The prime minister met his pledge to halve inflation by the end of 2023, leaving four pledges outstanding.

However, he is faring less well with his other pledges.

It has been confirmed the UK is now in recession, which means the PM's pledge to grow the economy is not being met.

With the general election approaching, how is Mr Sunak doing on delivering his other promises?

You can see the progress for yourself below.

There will most likely be a general election at some point in 2024, but we don't know exactly when.

Rishi Sunak has said it will not happen on 2 May - when local elections will take place across England.

The prime minister's "working assumption" is that it will be in the second half of this year, but beyond that we know very little more about the precise timing.

So why is this the case?

Political correspondent Serena Barker-Singh explains:

The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about different political parties.

Labour is still sitting comfortably on a roughly 21-point lead, averaging at 44.1% in the polls, with the Tories on 23.1%.

In third is Reform UK on 11.3%, followed by the Lib Dems on 9.8%.

The Green Party stands at 5.8%, and the SNP on 2.9%.

See the latest update below - and you can read more about the methodology behind the tracker  here .

Former Tory leadership candidate Penny Mordaunt may have poured cold water over talk of her gunning for the PM's job ( see 11.02 post) , but speculation about Rishi Sunak's future is unlikely to go away.

Our political correspondent  Gurpreet Narwan   says rumours that Tory MPs are plotting to overthrow Mr Sunak before the election are a sign of "real despondency within the party".

"We're hearing from MPs all the time that they fear the public's stopped listening to them altogether," she says.

"They're not getting a positive response on the doorstep and with the party languishing 20 points behind in the polls, there's real frustration among MPs who fear they're going to lose their jobs.

"While there's clearly no firm plot yet, all this is a sign of the real despondency within the party.

"Especially as it looks as though it's going to have to limp on to autumn, with the prime minister shooting down suggestions of an election in May."

After a bad few weeks - from the spring budget failing to provide any bounce in the polls, to the defection of Lee Anderson to Reform - it's an "uphill battle" for the prime minister to lift the mood.

Andrew Mitchell, the Foreign Office minister, is now responding to an Urgent Question in the Commons on the situation in Israel and Gaza.

He said he is "deeply concerned" about the situation in Gaza, as Labour's shadow foreign secretary warned of "catastrophic levels of hunger".

David Lammy said that famine in the region is "imminent".

'It's unbearable - and must not go on'

Mr Lammy added: "Half the population is expected to face catastrophic levels of hunger, the highest number of people ever recorded under this system.

"Only twice in 20 years have famine conditions been reached, but what distinguishes the horror in Gaza from what has come before is this is not driven by drought or disaster - it is man made.

"It is the consequences of war, it is the consequence of aid that is available not reaching those who need it.

"Food is piled up in trucks just a few kilometres away while children in Gaza are starving. It's unbearable - and it must not go on."

Mr Lammy says the restrictions on aid flows in the region are "completely unacceptable".

He asks if the government will join Labour's call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

Aid truck provision 'woefully short'

In response, Mr Mitchell says the UK is doing "everything we can" to try to head off the threat of famine in Gaza.

He also confirms 192 aid trucks did reach the region on Sunday.

"But that is woefully short of what is required," the minister adds.

"Before the crisis, more than 500 trucks a day were getting in."

A proposed takeover of The Telegraph newspaper by a UAE-led consortium will be referred to the competition watchdog.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said she was "minded" to send the deal to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) following advice from regulator Ofcom, which will kick off a long review.

The consortium looking to buy the newspaper is RedBird IMI - a joint venture an Abi Dhabi investment group and a US fund manager.

The CMA review could effectively kill the proposed takeover because while it's taking place, a law is due to come into force that would ban foreign governments owning British newspapers.

Ms Frazer said Ofcom had found Abi Dhabi's IMI may wish to influence "the accurate presentation of news and free expression of opinion in the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph newspapers".

She expects the new law banning governments from owning papers to come into force within the next month or two.

"If the Telegraph case is still live, it will affect it," she told LBC radio.

Our business correspondent Paul Kelso explained there are specific concerns around the role of Sheikh Mansour, a member of the Abi Dhabi royal family and vice president of the UAE.

He's funding 75% of the proposed £600m takeover deal.

"With a poor record of freedom of media expression in Abu Dhabi, there would be a reduction potentially in freedom of expression in the Telegraph," says Paul.

Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor, asks Jeremy Hunt whether the Conservatives have costed a reported plan to abolish national insurance tax.

She says: "After the budget, the chancellor wrote to Conservative Party members, telling them that the government planned to abolish national insurance.

"The economic secretary said that national insurance will vanish, and the prime minister said it was his ambition to abolish it.

"So can the chancellor confirm whether he asked the Office for Budget Responsibility to cost the government's unfunded plan to abolish national insurance contributions?"

In response, Mr Hunt largely dodges the question.

He says he is "glad" Ms Reeves asked about national insurance cuts.

"First, she supported them, then she abstained in the lobbies, now she appears to be against them," he adds. "Like the bankers bonus tax which she was strongly in favour of and then strongly against.

"Isn't the actual truth here that where Labour should have an economic policy, there is just a black hole filled with platitudes?"

Mr Reeves pushes again on her question.

Mr Hunt says: "We specifically said we wouldn't fund national insurance cuts from increasing borrowing or cutting spending on public services."
