This royal yacht club is it the oldest and biggest in the Balearics. Situated near the centre of Palma, it offers good security with easy access for all nautical goods and services. There are 946 moorings of which 589 are for members. The club has a sailing and canoe schools, 

It is the base for some prestigious regattas such as the King's Cup and the Princess Sofia Trophy, in which many members of the Spanish Royal Family frequently participate. The club has many facilities for its members including an indoor and an outdoor pool, gym, library and TV lounge.

The Real Club Nautico de Palma is world renowned for organising the famous annual Copa del Rey, (trs…. The King’s Cup ) the showcase high summer regatta in the Mediterranean, as well as hosts to many top international regattas from Olympic dinghy classes to Maxi yachts, including the curtain opening PalmaVela each spring….

It is closely associated with Spain’s royal family. The previous King, Juan Carlos  sailed from the club as now does the reigning king SM Felipe. The fantastic, reliable sea breeze conditions in the Bay of Palma provide great racing. Over its 60 years history the club has received many awards.

Facilities are second to none including nearly 950 marina berths, a swimming pool, gym, top class bars and restaurants. And the atmosphere after racing is second to none. The RCNP has hosted the TP52 class many times including for the world championship. And of course the club is located in the beautiful, historic popular city which is the capital of the Balearics.

REAL CLUB NÁUTICO – PALMA DE MALLORCA

During its 60 years of existence, the Club has hosted an impressive number of international regattas. Its past has been characterised by the world´s most important competitors and this is continuing, leaving a legacy that very few clubs can demonstrate.

The history of the Club was condensed into a book printed in 1998 on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The book recounts an important part of the life of the Club, its sporting vocation and social anecdotes, and lists the various boards of directo rs, as well as its chairmen. In 1998 the Club was nominated as the “Best Spanish Yacht Club” in Bayonne, which corroborated the success of the reforms that have been carried out over the last six years.

The jetties, the dry dock, the offices, the library, the leisure rooms, the bars and restaurants, the terraces, the swimming pool, the gymnasium and the sailing school have all been completely refurbished.

In 1999 the Club was awarded the Distinction of “Important” by the Diario de Mallorca newspaper and a prize by the Chamber of Commerce of Mallorca and Ibiza.

A legislative amendment gives grounds for this optimism.

Fighting to extend the concession of the Real Club Náutico de Palma is the priority of the new incoming board of directors.

The club faces some decisive months in determining its future . It is pending a court ruling that is expected some time in the first half of 2024, but a committee set up by the club has meanwhile come up with another strategy.

This committee is analysing the option of requesting the Balearic Ports Authority (APB) to resume a process for extending the concession . This began in 2015 but has never moved on. Now, however, there has been an amendment to the State Ports Law regarding rights to extensions. This would require the approval of the government, but initial contacts suggest that it would be receptive to doing so.

This club in Palma is one of a number in the Balearics concerned by what they describe as a 'gentrification' process that would compromise their futures as social and sporting entities. Organisations might take over concessions and abandon clubs' traditional roles, e.g. for providing training.

It is great to hear the Bulletin bring this issue up to the readership. For those who don't know, the 'Club Nautico' network in Spain, have given access to boats, tuition and competition for many low income families. As well as water access for disabled groups and many other areas of inclusivity. It would truly be a crime if this tradition was ended, so that another group of venture capitalists could take over yet another marina, and then squeeze every last cent out of the concession. Long live the RCNP!
