EXTERIOR This wonderful yacht offers three main deck levels plus a sky-high observation deck with 360-degree views thanks to the glass balustrade which can be enjoyed from the plush sun pads. The sun deck also boats supremely comfortable sun pads and a circular dining table making a sociable and convivial space.

Alternative al fresco dining can be hosted on the upper deck aft with adjacent sofas perfect for pre-dinner drinks. The expansive foredeck on this level is all about the pool which is accompanied by a wide sun pad.

On the main deck a curved built-in sofa and occasional chairs create sheltered lounge space under the shade of the overhang. Steps lead down to the water’s edge platform which is extended when the transom door is opened to reveal a lovely beach club.

INTERIOR The interior décor blends warm wood finishes with neutral soft furnishing. The collection of relaxed furniture creates elegant lounge and dining settings in the main salon and sky lounge.

The upper deck is home to the sky lounge and bridge, plus captain’s accommodation and convenient day head. The main deck is configured with the main salon aft – an open plan lounge and dining room – galley and pantry amidships, another day head and a stunning forward master suite.

The stern space on the lower deck is a wonderful beach club while four guest staterooms are amidships and the crew quarters forward.

Famous for its Italian style and award-winning superyachts , Benetti Yachts is both one of Europe’s oldest boat builders, and its most prolific. With a proud maritime heritage stretching back to 1873, Benetti turned to the leisure yacht market in the 1950s, and combined with its parent group, Azimut , the yard has maintained its dominance as the world’s largest superyacht builder since 1999. Over the years, Benetti has launched some of the industry’s most celebrated yachts from its Livorno and Viareggio yards, and it remains one of the few family-owned superyacht builders in the world. Benetti Yachts currently produces custom and semi-custom superyachts in GRP or steel and aluminium from 37m to 100+m.

The Yachts That Make Benetti Great

The Benetti fleet has a rich celebrity history, with a lengthy roll call of iconic yachts. After a proud history of building commercial sailing and naval vessels, Benetti’s expansion into private yachts began in the 1950’s, but true success came when it swapped wood construction for steel in 1961, launching its semi-displacement Delfino range complete with a wood-panelled interior, roomy aft salon, and modern galley. This groundbreaking design, which separated crew and guests for the first time, was the genesis of modern superyacht design, and rather astonishingly, was arrived at by one Euginio Manfredi, a designer who had never stepped foot on a boat. Manfredi had created a sensation, and Benetti yachts quickly became a status symbol, with the Tirenno, Mediterraneo, and Gabbiano series following the Delfino. In 1979, the staggeringly large custom 85m NABILA (later Trump Princess, now KINGDOM 5KR) was launched from the Benetti yard in 1979. From the 1960’s to the early 1980’s, Benetti’s reputation flourished. Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly were photographed aboard the Benetti GABBIANO in Monaco in 1963, Freddy Mercury wrote Kashoggi’s Ship after a particularly wild party aboard NABILA, and NABILA was also a film location for Sean Connery’s Bond in Never Say Never Again. Yet despite Benetti’s extraordinary achievements and notoriety, NABILA would also spell the end of Benetti as it was, with a budget blowout and ironclad contract forcing Benetti into bankruptcy proceedings in 1984. Enter Azimut , a family-owned yacht builder who would take Benetti to new heights, notably the hugely popular semi-custom line 50m Golden Bay series, which launched in 1995 and consolidated the Benetti name across the yachting world. Today, the Benetti brand continues to break new barriers. In 2020, Benetti launched three yachts over 100m in 100 days, the 107m LUMINOSITY, 107m LANA, and 108m IJE. Benetti currently builds custom yachts , as well as four ranges of semi-custom yachts, including the game-changing Oasis series with its open aft deck and plunge pool. Benetti is also at the forefront of environmental and hybrid propulsion advancements.

‘Made in Italy’ is a core pillar of the Benetti brand, and the Benetti fleet continue to be built across Azimut -Benetti’s Livorno, Viareggio, and Faro yards, with additional refit capacity at Lusben in Livorno. 150 years after their inception, this proud Italian yacht builder continues to push the boundaries of yacht design.

Benetti’s Superyacht Calex Reviewed

It’s a long way to go from California to Italy just to build a boat. Then again, Calex , delivered last year by Benetti , is a 220-foot fully custom build—60 feet larger than its owner’s previous superyacht , which was semicustom. It’s also an example of the degree to which an experienced owner will go to ensure the comfort of those accompanying him: not just family and friends, but also crew.

While a larger yacht naturally affords more indoor and outdoor space, this California resident wanted an abundance of both, prioritizing privacy and well-being.

Arguably the best example of this is the owner’s suite, which, in combination with a dedicated alfresco area, is more like a penthouse apartment. Giorgio Cassetta and his team at Cassetta Yacht Designers, which has styled numerous Benettis, penned 1,772 square feet on the upper deck for this, from amidships forward. The owner’s suite includes the master stateroom, an office, a double bath and a walk-in closet. Since the stateroom faces sole-to-ceiling glass forward, 180 degrees of changing views welcomes the owner each morning. The alfresco lounge lets the owner relax in privacy. Accessible from the suite via two curved sliding doors, the lounge has chaises, chairs and a gas fireplace. And, the raised foredeck forward can be the owner’s touch-and-go helipad.

Unwinding in the company of friends and family was also important in commissioning the yacht, whose beach club is one of the more cleverly private places aboard Calex . Beach clubs have become bigger indoor-outdoor areas, especially through the use of fold-down platforms. They enhance the feeling of having a large lounge atop the sea, but they present a problem when owners and guests want seclusion. So with Calex , a single gull-wing door fully aft swings up to yield access. The beach club is still sizable, in part thanks to the yacht’s 35-foot beam. Guests can watch sports on the TV, enjoy drinks from the bar and use the hammam. To take a dip, they can step out onto the swim platform and use the flip-down swim ladder. Boarding water toys is just as simple from the platform.

And boy, does Calex have toys—especially ones that will help guests burn calories. Stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, water skis, electric surfboards, electric foiling boards, a wakeboard and a surfboard are all available. Friends and family craving a little more speed can step aboard two personal watercraft capable of 65 mph. If the toys aren’t enough exercise, gym equipment and a yoga space are on the sun deck, with a nearby hot tub for a post-workout muscle soak.

All of the time and attention put into creating these areas would be for naught if the crew had subpar quarters. Time and time again, well-planned crew’s quarters contribute to stronger staff retention and a better yacht-ownership experience. Sixteen hands, led by Capt. Eddie Cooney, handle operations aboard Calex . While no one will blink to learn that Cooney’s cabin is on the bridge deck, near the wheelhouse and the ship’s office, they’ll definitely do a double take to see its design, along with that of the quarters for the rest of the crew belowdecks.

According to the Benetti Style Department, the owner had a singular focus for their area from the start of planning. The furnishings and decorative materials are similar to those in the two main-deck VIP staterooms and four guest staterooms (two doubles and two convertible twins) on the lower deck. Finally, and wisely, dumbwaiters connect the main-deck galley to the upper decks’ lounging spaces inside and out.

Calex also features sculptures and art pieces the owner has picked up amid his travels. The yacht casts a comforting spell, inviting guests to be as social as they wish throughout the five enclosed decks, as well as outside on the terrace-like areas and fully open sun deck. Movable deck furnishings make it easy to go from big, garrulous groups to cozier conversations. Simultaneously, Calex caters to more secluded downtime, especially for its owner. Ultimately, Calex is built for different needs, including those of the crew.

It’s a long way to go from California to Italy to get all of this. But, especially for this owner, it was worth it.  

Well(ness) Wishes

As much as the owner set aside space for health and wellness, he wanted the interior ambience of Calex to convey a sense of well-being too. Ivory-toned furnishings and warm woods, such as maple and American walnut, create a serene atmosphere, along with a dose of sophistication. The decor is by the Benetti Style Department and the owner’s team.

Engine Emissions

Calex is Benetti’s first fully custom yacht in this size range to comply with Tier III regulations. Tier III is an International Maritime Organization standard that reduces nitrous-oxide emissions by about 70 percent compared with prior regulations. Calex has a scrubbing system for exhaust gas from the main engines and gensets.

Charter Calex

Calex is part of the Northrop & Johnson charter fleet. The yacht is heading for the Caribbean this winter and the Mediterranean next year. A glass elevator and space-planning make the five enclosed decks accessible for wheelchairs. The weekly base rate starts at $680,000.

Ten years from now, Millennials will have taken over the superyacht world. At least that’s the forecast by several experts who are seeing ages of yacht buyers trending younger.

That trend is expected to continue, according to research from Italian yacht builder Rossinavi and the University of Monaco, with the average age of superyacht buyers decreasing 10 to 15 years over the next decade. That could make Millennials the primary buyers of superyachts.

The topic of younger buyers is a constant discussion in shipyard boardrooms and among designers looking to modify their designs to this changing market. It was also one of the topics at the recent Yachtmaster event in Key West, hosted by Benetti Yachts . Benetti sponsors Yachtmaster events twice a year (the European edition was in Budapest last month) to brief captains and other professionals on new trends in the superyacht industry.

“We have been doing this event for 24 years now,” Benetti Americas manager Nick Bischoff told Robb Report . “The intent is to continue to build relationships with influencers of our current and prospective owners. In the beginning that meant mostly captains, but it’s expanded to include surveyors and owners’ reps, too.” The ultimate goal, says Bischoff, is for participants not only to network, but “put their heads together to create an ever-improving onboard experience both for owners and crew.”

Many seminars focused on the concept of onboard lifestyle, which most brokers and shipyards see as a primary driver for purchasing a yacht. Benetti’s head of product, Sebastiano Vida, also spoke about how lifestyle influences new designs in the yachts.

But Jason Dunbar, a broker and appraisal surveyor with Vessel Value Survey, recommended tough love to the brokers. His discussion about managing expectations for newbie owners included advice about being “realistic” with owners who are flush with cash, but might be new to the superyacht world. If an owner wants a brand-new 120-footer with a crew of six, but has a budget of $8 million, the broker is the one who needs to break the bad news. “A good broker has to tell people ‘Listen, that’s just not going to happen,’” says Dunbar. “That will save a lot of headaches down the road and will hopefully keep a client in boating for the long term.”

A new buyer is often coming off a one-week charter that was magical: perfect weather, a well-oiled boat, and a crew looking forward to a little R&R after hustling all week for the charter guests. “It’s relatively easy to make things work like that one week at a time,” says Dunbar. “But a new owner who wants to use their boat for 10, 15, or 30 weeks, that’s a totally different thing. You may have to tell them they need to hire two crews and rotate them—which will be news to them.” He said that overworking the crew will “burn through humans.” The crew will be miserable, he says, which will make the boat not live up to the owners’ expectations. “The next thing you know these new owners will be long gone from yachting.”

Fraser Yachts CEO Anders Kurtén sees the new buyers as a boon for design creativity in an old-school industry. “It starts with a piece of paper,” he says. “We sit down and start designing these boats for younger clients and we see similar trends. Basically they all want to live their shore-based lives on a yacht.”

The segmented and often claustrophobic interiors of many current superyacht designs, says Dirand, just doesn’t float with the new generation. “Young owners’ preferences are honed by hospitality and a knowledge of architectural trends,” he says.

Because of that, wellness centers have become focal points of design. As moguls like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have made clear as of late, having six-pack abs in middle age is the new Lamborghini. These new owners expect their boats to be designed with beach clubs with gyms, saunas, massage areas that allow owners and guests to work out or relax, amidst warm sun rays and luscious sea breezes.

Kurtén also pointed to green tech as key for the new generation of clients. “We’ve hit a point where a 150-foot sailboat can go across the Atlantic without burning a drop of fuel. And motoryachts can function on battery-only mode, at least when they are close to port,” he says. “That’s important to these new clients—they want to be green. A few years ago that was something you said at a cocktail party, but today it’s a reality for a lot of buyers.”

Peter Selivanoff, senior yacht service manager for Fraser, also spoke about how owners are seeking highly specialized crews who can perform multiple functions across the yacht.

Navigating these new realities is an important part for the industry to future-proof itself in the competitive realm of ultra-luxury products. This is a place where youth may not spring eternal but, at least for now, it reigns supreme.
