Gangway and Types of Gangways Used in the Shipping World

The equipment used to help a person get into (embark) and out (disembark) of a ship or a boat is known as a gangway. Technically, the gangway is like a smooth and sloping ramp on the upper deck’s sides of boats; gangways are mainly used by passengers or crew to enter or exit the ship and are sometimes used for loading and unloading cargo. They are a platform which provides safe access to maritime vessels, trucks and rail cars.

A gangway must meet the following requirements-It should be at least 20 inches wide, and handrails and midrails should protect each side. The former should have a minimum height of 33 inches, and railings must be made of wood, chain, wire, rope etc. Chain, wire, and rope railings must be tight.

A gangway must be clear, and nothing should be kept on it, including bridles or hoses. A straight ladder must be employed if a gangway cannot be used. A net must be held to prevent workers from falling into the waters or to a lower level from the upper storey.

The word gangway originates from the Anglo-Saxon language. Gangways that are used now can be of two varieties:

  • Some gangway s are built in such a way that they are constructed on the ship itself.

Various types of gangways are used today. The same can be explained as follows:

  • Beam Brow Fibreglass Gangways: As the name suggests, these gangways are fibreglass. The width of these gangways is 24 feet, designed to suit those ships used for warfare activities. Other features of this gangway include a handrail that can be folded and a completely non-slipping surface.
  • Beam Brow Aluminium Gangways: Made of aluminium, these gangways are welded and quite durable. The surface of the ramp is such that there is no problem with water accumulating. Also, the ramp’s non-slippery surface ensures no accidents are caused. This gangway is designed to suit ships of various sizes, so anyone can opt for the aluminium gangplank.
  • Truss Brow Aluminium Gangways: These ramps are constructed from heavy-duty aluminium as per the required industry standards and are designed to fit ships of all sizes. The ramp has a rough surface so that the people walking on the ramp do not slip.
  • Aluminium Gangways: These gangways have foldable handle rails, so storing them becomes easy. The surface of the aluminium gangway is rough (non-slippery) so that no accidents are caused. The ramp is designed so that there cannot be any water-logging problems.

Several other gangways are available that are used in ports and harbours. The same can be explained as follows:

  • Light-Duty Gangways: Made of aluminium and steel, they are lighter in weight and are used mainly in residential ports. The materials used to ensure that there is no corrosion whatsoever. Another feature of this gangway is that it has foldable handrails making it easy to store the gangway. The cost of these gangways is also quite affordable.
  • Medium-Duty Gangways: They also come at a very affordable rate and are mainly used in private and residential ports. The materials used to build the medium-duty gangway are aluminium and steel. These two materials offer long-term durability to the ramp.
  • Heavy-Duty Gangways: They are used in private harbours with cruise ferries and other boats. These ramps are made of steel and aluminium per the required ISO standards. The design of the ramp allows even handicapped people to enter and exit it safely.

With the help of gangways , entry and exit to ships become very easy. This is the most important feature and advantage of ramps in water transport.

What is a Gangway?

A Gangway is a passage that is used to make a way between the dock and the ship. It is a ladder or ramp type of thing which helps in giving easy access to the ship. It is used by passengers to get in and off of the ships. It is also used for in and out movement of cargo and the repairing process of the ship.

They are designed in such a way that they can withstand any environmental crisis. It has to be built in a proper way to ensure workers’ and passengers’ safety.

They can be foldable or fixed to the ship.

Types of Gangways according to Strength & Durability

A gangway is divided into three categories.

1. High-Duty Gangways

Heavy-duty gangways are used at ports and terminals where large vessels or cruise ships dock. They are made of corrosion-resistant aluminum. Some are made up of Steel. They are designed to sustain heavy loads up to 50psf. They are best in quality, durable, and reliable.

2. Medium-Duty Gangways

They are made of aluminum and stainless steel. These types of gangways are available at affordable costs. They are long-lasting and durable. These gangways are also capable of handling loads up to 50psf. It is preferred by residential and private ports.

3. Light-Duty Gangways

Light-duty gangways are designed for lightweight carrying capacity. It is made up of corrosion-resistant aluminum and stainless steel. It is safe, reliable, and is available at reasonable prices. They generally have a short span.

Types of Gangways according to the usage

Now we will look at the different types of Gangways.

1. Stage Gangways

These gangways are made up of marine-grade aluminum and stainless steel. Their length varies from 12 feet to 40 feet. Designed to carry loads up to 750 lbs.  It is also referred to as vessel stage gangways, simply stage gangways or barge ship gangways. It is mainly used for embarking and disembarking passengers or crew members from ships. This is simple, affordable, and portable.

2. Truss Gangways

Loading and unloading of cargo from offshore platforms and ships require Truss type of gangways . It is a little large and used for naval vessels, barges, transport ships, cargo ships, oil, and gas offshore platforms, and container ships . It can be found attached to a fixed platform, movable platform, or no platform.  It also has several walk surfaces and hence ensures the safety of personnel or cargo getting shipped.

3. Aluminum Gangways

Aluminum Gangways are made up of Aluminium. It consists of handrails that can fold for easy storage , which means it’s for storage purposes. It is attached to the ship with gunwale clips. This gangway has rectangular punched grating due to which it becomes durable and non-slippery.

4. Flat access Gangways

They are made up of aluminum, wood, or steel. Flat access gangways are very safe and can be easily inclined or declined. Due to this property, it is very popular. It has telescopic extension features and they have a non-slippery surface.

5. Beam Brow Fiberglass Gangways

These fiberglass gangways are suitable for ships active in warfare activities because of their low magnetic permeability. It has rectangular bar grating which provides water drainage and makes it durable. It also has a non-slippery surface. The material used in this gangway is fiberglass. Convenient and easy to store because of the availability of folding handrails.

6. Beam Brow Aluminum Gangways

Beam Brow Aluminium gangway is made up of aluminum. It is a heavy-duty gangway with all-welded construction. This type is also equipped with rectangular punched grating which makes it easy for drainage and the surface is non-slip.  It has rigs and gunwale clips to secure to a ship.

7. Truss Brow Aluminum Gangways

This is also made with aluminum. It is a heavy-duty gangway, constructed with complete welding. It consists of Rectangular punched grating for having water drainage and durability. This makes its surface non-slippery. It also includes dock rollers or castor wheels. It can carry loads up to 75 psf. The Truss Brow Aluminium gangway is equipped with Aluminium bulbous cleats for safety purposes.

8. Telescopic and Self-adjusting stair Gangway

Self-adjusting stair gangways are constructed with aluminum, stainless steel, or galvanized steel. It can accommodate itself to the required height and is designed with stairs and a non-slippery surface for safety aspects.

The telescopic marine gangway is generally large and is also retractable. It can reach difficult parts of ships. It can follow the movement of the ship when it is positioned to a tanker and kept in freewheel mode.  It can be stored in a small space.

Offshore installations can be done easily and conveniently. It can manage utility transfer lines for water, electricity, cargo, mud, and fuel. It has become very popular because of the wide range of features available.

Gangways used in the marine environment date back almost as far as the existence of boats. Granted the gangways used in 1 B.C. were very basic and unsafe, but they need to load (embark) and unload (disembark) has always been there. The purpose of a gangway is to make access to and from a ship, barge, or boat easier and safer.

How to use Gangway

Marine gangway , also known as  ship ladder ,  gangway ,  shore ladder , etc., is auxiliary equipment connecting the ship and the coast. Gangway refers to the movable set of staires installed on both sides of the ship for passengers to get on and off the ship, made of wood or metal. It consists of upper and lower platforms, ladder frames, steps, railings and hoisting devices. When the boat is sailing, it is hoisted, folded and stored on the side of the deck, and lowered and hung on the side when in use. The gangway device is generally used in passenger ships and other large and medium-sized ships.

How to use the gangway safely?

  • When the gangway falls to the shore, the pedals should avoid obstacles, place them stably, and not twist. Hanging beams and chains should be twisted high or placed properly to avoid bumping into each other and hindering getting on and off the boat.
  • When the gangway cannot be placed on the quay due to the influence of tide, loading and unloading, quay environment and other factors, attention should be paid to adjusting the height of the gangway at any time. When the lower tread of the gangway is higher and farther from the quay, it is not allowed to go up and down reluctantly. The duty officer at the entrance of the ladder is responsible for adjusting the gangway and reminding the up and down personnel to pay attention to safety, and the bridge ladder should be added according to the regulations when necessary.
  • When the rope needs to be loosened due to ebb and flow, mooring and other reasons, the gangway should be twisted, the bridge ladder should be retracted, or a special person should be optimistic about the entrance of the ladder and prohibit people from going up and down. When the gangway cannot be used, to set up the bridge ladder correctly, the personnel must be securely tied, handrails installed, and safety nets hung before people can get on and off. It is forbidden to jump directly onto the pier from the side of the ship, or directly onto the ship from the pier.
  • The gangway and bridge ladder must hang safety nets according to regulations. There should be safety signs such as anti-fall and anti-skid at the gangway and bridge ladder. The handrails, ropes and steps of the gangway and bridge ladder must be kept fresh, clean and firm, so that people up and down can grasp it firmly and steadily.
  • When anchoring, go up and down the gangway and soft ladder, and adjust the height at any time. The upper part of the ladder is bound and fixed, and there must be a handrail, and a lifebuoy with a safety rope and a sling rope are prepared at the entrance of the ladder. It is forbidden to carry too many objects and climb the ladder with one hand and one hand.
  • It is forbidden to use the gangway to lift items, and it is forbidden to overload.
  • The gangway and the soft ladder should be maintained regularly, especially the lifting wire, the turntable platform bracket, the railing, the braking part of the mechanical equipment and other components should be well protected. The gangway wires must be neatly arranged on the drum to avoid accidents caused by the staggering of the gangway caused by the overlapping and jamming of the wires.
  • Operators on the gangway must fasten their seat belts and wear life jackets.

Building a Behemoth Part 1: The Largest Nautical Structures Gangway

Recently Nautical Structures Industries has designed, fabricated, and delivered the largest gangway system (to date) in its 36 years. This 100% US made gangway system is an automated hydraulic unit that translates either to port or starboard allowing it to be deployed and utilized in any docking situation. In this article, as well as four following editions over the coming weeks, we aim to show the world how much goes into producing bespoke equipment for the commercial and yachting marine sectors.

The system was co-developed over a multi-year period, with multiple designs and concepts considered throughout. With the ship in question being a large cruise ship being built in the United States, we wanted to ensure the gangway had all the standard safety, aesthetic, and technological developments our mega yacht & super yacht systems are known for. But built to suit the demands of a high-end cruise vessel that, at times, makes multiple stops per-day with the only means of boarding via the Nautical Structures gangway system.

With the safety, usage, and design constraints at hand, our engineering team along with the shipyard and naval architect settled on a single car that allows motion from its stowed position (on centerline of the vessel) that effectively has a 48-foot folding gangway attached at either end. Once the specifics and requirements were hashed out, the Nautical Structures engineering department was let-loose on the project to bring it from a concept to reality. This involved countless hours of modeling, FEA (Finite Element Analysis), customer communication, revisions, drafting of production drawings, and ultimately the official production release drawing package to the shop floor.

How to ensure safe operation of gangways

In light of several gangway claims, the Shipowners Club issued a revised booklet providing guidance on gangway safety. The booklet notes that gangways should have important information marked on their framework, including manufacturers’ name, safe loading (by numbers and weight), model number and the maximum angle for the gangway to be set at.

If a portable ladder is being utilised, this should be used at an angle of between 75 degrees from the horizontal and should extend at least 1m above the final landing place, as per the UK’s Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers.

A gangway should be carried on every ship of 30 metres of more registered length (or overall length, if the ship is not registered). The gangway should be appropriate to the deck layout, size, shape and maximum freeboard of the ship’ and ‘Portable ladders should only be used as a last resort, where no safer means of access is reasonably practicable. Further guidance is in 22.1 Section 2 and Annex 22.2. of the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers,

The majority of the Club’s vessels tend to utilise ladders and gangways due to the fact that accommodation ladders tend to be constructed for larger vessels.

The rigging of any access or gangway is an important job and must be undertaken by a suitably qualified and experienced person from the vessel. The gangway must not be placed on a bulwark or side rail of the vessel, unless the bulwark or side rail is of sufficient strength to bear the weight of the gangway and persons using it.

Key points to consider

  • Handrails : Handrails should adequately fence off the ladder and be kept at a height of at least 1m. If these are made of rope, they must be monitored and kept taut at all times.
  • Steps and platforms : Steps and platforms must be kept clear of oil and debris. If a bottom platform is fitted on the gangway, this must be kept horizontal and have stanchions fitted to enable the safety rope to continue through them.
  • Illumination : The access area of the vessel, the total length of the gangway and the quayside is to be kept adequately lit to ensure safe transit.
  • Lifebuoy : The lifebuoy must be fitted with a separate safety line attached to a quoit or similar device and a self-igniting light. This must be positioned on the vessel at the top of the access point.
  • Safety net : If it is applicable and practicable, a safety net is to be fitted under every part of the access ladder or gangway, extending on both sides and kept taut. The net must not be secured to any fixed point on the quay. Figures 2 and 3 show gangways incorrectly rigged, therefore increasing the risk of incidents.
  • Watchkeeper : Even if it is not applicable under local regulations for some vessels to comply with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, it is good practice to have a member of the vessel’s crew permanently stationed at the gangway for safety purposes. They will be able to assist people transiting the gangway and they can monitor any dangerous practices. The watchkeeper must keep in mind that they are the first point of contact on the vessel for those boarding. If a vessel is alongside a berth affected by tidal conditions, the situation should be constantly reassessed. In addition, the watchkeeper must have access to the times of high and low waters and be aware of any cargo or ballast operations that may affect the vessel’s trim and list. If a watchkeeper is not present at the gangway and an incident occurs, the vessel’s crew might carry on with their duties, unaware of the situation.
  • Bulwark ladder : A bulwark ladder should be utilised when the top of the gangway or portable ladder rests or is level with the bulwark. It should be securely attached to the vessel to prevent movement and must be equipped with two rigidly secured handrails/stanchions.
  • Fire plan : The fire plan should be placed in the vicinity of the gangway. It should contain information that may be useful in an emergency, such as a cargo stowage plan, stability details, crew list, general arrangement plan and a plan highlighting the location of the vessel’s safety equipment. Mooring lines should be routinely monitored to avoid surging up and/or down the quay.

In addition, prevailing circumstances such as weather and events, which may create temporary tripping hazards, must be taken into account and highlighted as necessary. When assembling a means of access, it is not only the vessel’s equipment, access and procedures that need to be assessed and followed, but also those ashore.

It should be ensured, as far as possible, that the end of the ladder being located on the quay is placed in an unobstructed area clear of debris and oil patches and away from impending dangers such as lorries or cranes for cargo work and cargo being loaded/discharged. The running of mooring lines should be in such a manner that they do not pose danger to those transiting the gangway.

Final checks

After the access has been rigged and prior to use, the gangway should be checked to ensure that it is safe to use. Areas to concentrate on include:

  • Cleanliness
  • Faults, including physical damage . All boarding equipment should be maintained and checked at regular intervals designated by a planned maintenance programme. Any faults that are noted on the equipment must be dealt with immediately and recorded in the planning system and reported to shore managers where necessary, in line with the company’s direct reporting system. Aluminium equipment should be particularly checked for corrosion and fractures. Ladders should not be painted in case this conceals defects.
  • All moving parts are in good working order and are well-greased.
  • Ensure that all associated equipment is available and correctly located.

A ships gangway connects the vessel to the dock. Merchant ship gangways generally take the form of a stairway.

The gangway connects the ship to the dock. It is used for the embarkation and disembarkation of passengers, crew, pilots and other personnel.

There are many different types of ships gangway. Cruise ships use short, broad platforms for embarking and disembarking passengers. There are spiral models whose configuration varies with angle of use. Some gangways fold for stowage within the sides of the ship.

Simple, but strong

Depending on the operating angles needed, you can choose from several walk surface styles to improve footing when operating at steeper angles on your brow. Choose from a flat ramp (diamond tread or our stamped aggressive tread used on self-adjusting stair (SAS) series ), add cleats to a flat ramp walk surface to allow up to a 30-degree incline, or choose our custom extruded curved treads to allow up to 45 degrees of operation.

As for handrails, use ropes to secure the vessel to the dock, not to keep your operators from falling off the brow. Ship access can be a dangerous thing in volatile conditions; make that access as safe as possible. Our handrails are laser cut from 2” square tube and robotically welded from continuous pieces to provide structural stability to the gangway and give your operators the very best in fall prevention. To further set the standard, our handrails get powder coated with high visibility orange giving an aesthetic value that will last for years.

Our rugged construction provides a standard distributed load rating of 750 pounds and can be made-to-order to accommodate even higher load capacities. Additionally, you can choose from multiple walk surfaces to improve your footing when operating at steeper angles, or give a relaxed surface with a gentle slope depending on your specific needs.

For the stage gangway, the options are identical to the truss gangway with the exception of the allowed length. All-wheel options and walk surfaces are the same.

The Stage Series is the little brother to the Truss Series gangway. It can span up to 20 feet in length and has available widths up to 5 feet.

The SG gangway is our lightest and most maneuverable option available but still has the same strength as its bigger brother. Because it is shorter, it can use smaller components, allowing for the same 750 pounds of support, but it’s easier to handle.

NYC Ferry is a network of ferry routes in New York City about six routes connecting 21 ferry piers in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. MarinaStep ship gangways are designed for high capacity, high volume applications, and services over 28 vessels on an hourly or 30-minute departure schedule.

How to Design a Gangway for Your Waterfront

Gangways offer convenient, safe access to your waterfront, boat or dock and allow you to cross safely over unstable areas. Getting onto boats and floating docks can be challenging, especially for children or people with mobility difficulties. Adding a gangway makes your waterfront safer and easier to cross. With a stable path from your watercraft to the shore, you can easily unload objects and make your waterfront experience as convenient as possible. 

Knowing how to figure out what size and design gangway or ramp you need to access your waterfront will help you narrow down your search. You can evaluate your options quickly and pick the best one for your needs. You’ll want to consider shorelines, materials, length and add-ons when exploring different types of gangways. 

How to Choose a Gangway

Most gangway styleslook similar — they’re designed for function and durability to ensure safety when used. Finding the right gangway design is about fitting the gangway to your needs. A gangway needs to withstand traffic and weathering. It should have features that accommodate your preferences. Gangways have to fit well with your existing setup so they work correctly, and you don’t have to spend money adjusting your existing waterfront components. 

You’ll want to use the following steps when choosing your gangway. They’ll help you understand what you want out of your gangway and will provide you with a good idea of what you’re looking for. Prepping for your gangway search will save you time and help you avoid purchasing the wrong gangway for your needs. 

1. Inspect Your Shoreline

Your shoreline will affect the gangway you choose. The rougher your shoreline, the more likely you are to need a sturdy, long gangway. Rocky, uneven shorelines are challenging to cross, especially when carrying supplies. If you need to cross riprap to get to the shoreline or dock, having a gangway will make getting to the water much easier and safer. The rougher your terrain, the bigger the gangway you’ll need to keep your path to the water safe. 

You probably don’t need a long or large gangway if your shoreline is primarily sandy and even. A smaller gangway that gets you to the dock or boat is all you need if your shoreline is easy to navigate. If you only need a short distance covered, consider getting a ramp instead of a gangway  for your waterfront. Ramps are also convenient, but they are not always as stable as gangways. Gangways will usually have railings to help with safety, while ramps typically have open sides. 

2. Choose Your Material

Wood, aluminum and polyethylene are the three most common gangway materials. All three offer good stability, but they differ in looks and durability. Picking the right material will help you get the most out of your investment and affects how long your gangway lasts. 

You don’t have to deal with corrosion if you’re near freshwater. However, gangways near saltwater will be exposed to lots of corrosion-causing conditions and abrasions. Picking a corrosion-resistant material will protect your gangway from heavy saltwater damage.

Let’s compare these gangway materials: 

  • Aluminum:  Marine-grade aluminum alloy is highly resistant to rust and corrosion, making it fantastic for gangways. It’s strong, durable and lightweight, making it easy to work with. Bolted-in handrails make these gangways extremely safe, and they’ll withstand regular waterfront wear. 
  • Polyethylene:  Polyethylene is just as durable as aluminum, but it won’t absorb heat like metal. It resists impact damage, corrosion and warping. Instead of welded handrails, polyethylene gangways have modular sections and attachment hardware. These components will sit firmly in place while allowing you to change up your gangway’s look whenever you want.
  • Wood*:  Wood is a classic, natural material. Wood needs treating before you can turn it into a gangway. Otherwise, it will rot and splinter quickly. Wood gangways are great for short-term gangways or smaller, less-used properties, but wood requires some upkeep to maintain its integrity. Weather and water will eventually cause rot, and you’ll need to repaint and repair your wood gangway as needed. * Wood is only available in our New Jersey locations.

You’ll need the right gangway length to make your waterfront as accessible as possible. Consider your shoreline and carefully measure the distance you want our gangway to cover. Choosing the right length is essential — without enough gangway, your dock won’t be as accessible as it needs to be. 

Your preferred material might also affect the gangway length you choose:

The FBI is conducting a court-authorized search of the vessel that crashed into a Baltimore bridge last month, according to FBI and Justice Department officials.

The Dali hit the Key Bridge on March 26, leading to the death of six construction workers who had been repairing pot holes in the overnight hours on the structure.

The Justice Department does not typically confirm or deny the existence of criminal investigations, but the investigative authority suggests that a criminal probe into the collapse is underway, and that a federal judge has approved the search.

The Washington Post , which first reported the activity , suggests that federal investigators are exploring whether crew members knew the vessels systems had been malfunctioning before they left the port. NPR has not confirmed the focus of the search.

The FBI probe is separate from an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The Biden administration has pledged to help rebuild the bridge.

Baltimore suing cargo ship's owner, operator in Key Bridge collapse; FBI launches investigation

BALTIMORE -- Baltimore City is taking legal action against entities it deems responsible for the deadly collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and the FBI has opened an investigation into the disaster. 

The bridge crumbled nearly three weeks ago after its support column was struck by a  malfunctioning cargo ship  in the early morning hours of March 26, sending eight construction workers into the Patapsco River below, killing six of them. 

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott on Monday announced the city partnered with two high-profile trial law firms to take legal action against those responsible for the tragedy, including the ship's owner, charterer, operator, manufacturer and other parties. 

The mayor said the effort is to mitigate the immediate and long-term harm caused to Baltimore's residents, like the families of the victims, workers in the Port of Baltimore, and those who used the bridge every day. It is not clear how much in damages the city seeks. 

"We are continuing to do everything in our power to support everyone impacted here and will continue to recognize the human impact this event has had," the mayor said in a statement. "Part of that work needs to be seeking recourse from those who may potentially be responsible, and with the ship's owner filing a petition to limit its liability mere days after the incident, we need to act equally as quickly to protect the City's interests."  

Dali owner aims to dodge liability

The Dali is owned by Grace Ocean Private, a Singapore-based company that provides water transportation services and is managed by Synergy Marine Group, a Singapore-based charter vessel company with over 660 ships under technical management, according to its  website . 

Perhaps anticipating a wave of lawsuits, Grace Ocean Private and Synergy Marine Group took steps about a week after the collapse to limit their liability for the crash. 

In a six-page preemptive filing in the  U.S. District Court in Baltimore , the companies evoked the  Limitation of Liability Act of 1851 , in which a shipowner can try to limit the amount they have to pay if their ship is involved in an accident; that limit would equal the value of the ship.

The filing notes that the pending freight at the time of the voyage was estimated at $1.17 million. 

The ship was chartered by Danish shipping giant Maersk at the time of the incident.

FBI opens investigation into crash

Federal law enforcement authorities are investigating what led up to the Key Bridge collapse, according to two people familiar with the matter. The FBI said it currently has agents on the Dali, which still sits at the accident site, but did not offer any further information. 

"FBI is present aboard the cargo ship Dali conducting court authorized law enforcement activity," the agency said. "There is no other public information available and we will have no further comment."   

The investigation is being conducted by Maryland's U.S. Attorney's Office and the FBI. The Washington Post was the first to report the news of the federal investigation. 

In a statement released Monday, the U.S. Attorney in Maryland, Erek Barron, said, "My office generally will not confirm the existence of or otherwise comment about investigations. However, the public should know, whether it's gun violence, civil rights abuse, financial fraud, or any other threat to public safety or property, we will seek accountability for anyone who may be responsible." 

Attorneys for the corporation that owns the Dali did not immediately respond to CBS News' request for comment. 

What caused the crash into the bridge? 

The chair of the National Transportation Safety Board told Congress last week the agency is focusing on the ship's electrical system in its investigation into the crash. The NTSB probe appears to be separate from the FBI's. 

An unclassified memo issued by CISA, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, said the ship reportedly  lost propulsion  at the time of the crash. 

The NTSB identified Hyundai as the manufacturer of the ship's power and brake system. The agency expects the preliminary report on the collapse to be released by the first week of May. 

The agency is also interviewing the ship's crew, examining the voyage data recorder, and assessing the bridge's design.  

Salvage and recovery efforts continue 

Dozens of containers are being removed from the Dali cargo ship as salvage operations continue. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, leading the salvage effort, is prioritizing clearing the Fort McHenry Channel to resume operations at the Port of Baltimore. 

Container removal is critical in moving the pinned ship, which has tons of mangled steel on its bow. Engineers aim to remove 178 containers to refloat the Dali.

Two temporary passageways  were created for smaller commercial and essential ships and barges. At least 69 vessels have traveled through those channels. A third,  deeper channel  is expected to open this month, allowing most vessels into the port. 

Two bodies  remain missing  after the collapse.

So far, crews have recovered the bodies of 35-year-old Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval, 35-year-old Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes and 26-year-old Dorlian Castillo Cabrera, and another man who was recovered on Sunday and is yet to be identified.

The men were repairing potholes on the bridge when it collapsed and they were knocked into the river.
