Samos Yacht Charters
Explore samos on your luxury yacht charter in greece.
With its natural purity, cascading mountains and hills, mythical past, and robust, ancient history, the verdant island of Samos is as unique as it is large.
Boasting a temperate climate and fertile soil, this island is known for growing endless vines of olives, as well as its verdant vineyards that still produce only the finest, local samiotiko wine.
According to Greek mythology, Samos was the birthplace of the goddess Hera; to whom residents paid homage with an ancient temple whose ruins still attract visitors today. Historically, the island of Samos was home to Pythagoras, one of the most famous philosophers and mathematicians in ancient history, balanced only by the island’s modern tourist amenities – like its luxury boutique hotels, pristine beaches, and tasty bars and taverns.

Floating off the coast of Turkey, Samos’ impressive history with a modern twist is paralleled by its ingenuity. Stretching 1,036 meters in length, the Tunnel of Eupalinos – an underground aqueduct built in the 500s BC – was constructed to connect both sides of the mountain and supply water to the ancient capital of Samos. It is thought by many to be the eighth wonder of antiquity, and an engineering feat that proves Samos was scientifically ahead of its time.
Reserve your private Greek yacht charter today for your next cruise through the Aegean Sea, and discover the beauty and history of Samos for yourself.
Samos Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See
Mytilinioi : Inhabited by Megatherions, Samotherions, and other rare animal species during prehistoric times, Mytilinioi is one of the largest and most active villages on the island of Samos today. Settled by residents of Mytilini in the 1700s, this village was once known for its tobacco plantations. Today, it is recognized across the world as being the site of unique archaeological discoveries, from prehistoric animal fossils to ancient ruins of Samos’ poignant history and significance.
Megalo Seitani : Accessible only by foot, the secluded beach of Megalo Seitani is one of the island’s true buried treasures. Covered with soft, white sand and pebbled shorelines, and surrounded by lush green mountains and the perfect blue waters of the sparkling Aegean Sea, Megalo Seitani offers locals and travelers alike a perfect escape; one basked in the island’s natural wonder.
Heraion : An ancient temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Hera, both wife and sister of Zeus, all that remains of the Heraion is the singular column, Kolona. Highly regarded, in Greek mythology, for her defense of marriage and monogamy, Hera was believed to spend most of her time preventing Zeus from having marital affairs. Located near the river Imbrasos, Heraion is believed to be the place where Hera and Zeus took their 300-year honeymoon. Just southwest of Pythagoreion, and slightly secluded from the island’s popular villages, Heraion is a true haven of serenity; fitting, when you consider it was erected to honor one of Greece’s most popular celestial beings.
Pythagorio : Named for the area’s most famous philosopher and mathematician, Pythagoras, the village of Pythagorio is popular for its natural beauty, plentiful tourists, characteristic red-roof houses, charming ambiance, and quaint, narrow passageways. Built around the center of the island, the bay, Pythagorio is perfect for avid yachters, local fishermen, historians, and sunbathers alike; all who appreciate this picturesque village for its unique personality, welcoming inhabitants, and seemingly surreal enchantment.

Yacht Charter Samos
Samos Town is the picturesque capital of Samos Island. Situated on the north coast of the island in a large protected bay, it serves as the main harbour and is a good pick-up point for charter boats in the eastern Aegean. Samos Town is the administrative centre of the island and has an excellent tourist infrastructure. Samos Town is a beautiful place set against green hills, with a waterfront promenade for evening strolls and a handful of good museums. It is known for its sweet wine.
It is worth visiting the Archaeological Museum to admire the imposing statues, grave objects and offerings, mainly from the area of Heraion. Heraion of Samos, 6km south of the city, was a large sanctuary to Hera, goddess of women, family, marriage and childbirth. Also very close to the town of Samos lies Vathy, which is one of the oldest villages and has a typically Greek character.
From here you can cruise around the lovely island of Samos, birthplace of Pythagoras, stopping in at its small coves, crowded sandy beaches or traditional seaside tavernas. On a one week boat charter you could also sail over to Ikaria and Fourni, or north to Chios and Lesvos.
Samos Town is the main port for ferries from Piraeus, the Cyclades and Ikaria. Samos Town is also connected daily with the port of Kusadasi in Turkey.
Samos Aristarchos International Airport is only 15km from Samos Town and connects to Athens , Thessaloniki and, in the summer, a number of European cities.
Sailing conditions
The Northern and Eastern Aegean is fully exposed to the ‘meltemi’ summer winds which blow from north-northwest and, although sailing can sometimes be challenging, it is mostly good and steady. Samos itself offers great sailing along its southern coast and the nearby Turkish mainland. For those that like open passage the islands here are more spaced out than other areas in Greece and offer just that. It is recommended to sail south on a one way charter.

Yacht Charter Samos
Lying seductively just off the Turkish coast, semitropical Samos is one of the northeastern Aegean Islands’ best-known destinations. Yet beyond the low-key resorts and the lively capital, Vathy, there are numerous off-the-beaten-track beaches and quiet spots in the cool, forested inland mountains, where traditional life continues.
Samos is very famous for its sweet local wine and a very significant island in Greece by historically point of view. It was the legendary birthplace of Hera, and the sprawling ruins of her ancient sanctuary, the Ireon, are impressive. Both the great mathematician Pythagoras and the hedonistic father of atomic theory, the 4th century bc philosopher Epicurus, were born here. Samos’ scientific genius is also affirmed by the astonishing Evpalinos Tunnel 524 bc, a spectacular feat of ancient engineering that stretches for 1034 meters deep underground.
As far the capital of Samos , Vathy is concerned , has two pebble beaches, the best being Gagos Beach, about 500m north from the old quay. The historic quarter of Ano Vathy is remarkable, filled with steep, narrow streets and red-tiled 19th-century hillside houses brims with atmosphere. The town center boasts two engaging museums and a striking century-old church.
Samos is located in the north Aegean and belongs to the Northeast Aegean Islands group which contains the islands Chios and Lesvos also. Those three islands is far away from the Greek mainland, dispersed along the coast of Turkey. The geographic coordinates of Samos are 38°24’00.0″N 26°01’00.0″E in Aegean Sea.

Herodotus talks of the largest temple in the whole of Greece being on the island at Heraion. It once had 155 columns but only one stands today on a site where there were certainly earlier temples.
The environment of Samos is stunning as you will discover if you decide on Samos as part of your yacht charter vacation. There are two especially impressive mountains, Kerkis and Ambelos where you might think you were in the Alps if you were there in mid-winter because of the low temperatures and plentiful rain. We can take you there at other parts of the year when you can explore the canyons and caves in more comfortable temperatures. The highest point you can reach is 1,400 metres and if you are interested in botany, you will see anything up to 1,400 different species, many endemic, as well as a wide range of birds of prey. Add the herons, pelicans and flamingos at Glyfada Lake and your treks will be truly memorable.
It is not just the natural environment that is there to enjoy. There are cobbled streets in the villages, a fortress from the 16th Century, the Sarakini Tower and several convents. The Church of Panagia Sarandaskaliotissa at the opening to Pythagoras’ Cave, named as the place he where he sought refuge from persecution is another place not to miss.
The ruins of the ancient city of Samos include a tunnel over a kilometer long which provided water to the City away from the eyes of enemies and not surprisingly these ruins and those at the Temple of Hera are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Island’s museums are especially interesting.
There are plenty of beaches on Samos as you sail in its waters on your yacht charter while the Island’s wine makes a great accompaniment to the lovely cuisine you can enjoy; the Festival for Samos’ Muscat is early in August so that is certainly a date to consider for your luxury yacht charter holiday. At one time, the Vatican had its own winery here and the wine for Holy Communion is still Samos produced. This fertile island is also famous for its olive oil and honey which you should also sample during your holiday.
Vathi, in the north east of the island, is the capital of Samos. The population of 9,000 is largely involved in tourism. The settlement is built like an amphitheatre on the slopes looking down on the sea. There is evidence of the time when the Venetians were a presence and the Archaeological Museum has plenty to offer those interested in learning more about the Island and its history. It is a neat village with plain coloured wall houses and lovely gardens. There are several taverns close to the sea, while other sights include the Byzantine Museum and the Church of Agios Spyridon. There is plenty of life by night and a relaxed atmosphere by day.
The Heraion is one of the most important religious sites in Greece. Mythology says that the Goddess Hera was born here. Only a single column remains from the 115 that once stood in 500 BC; it was the largest Greek temple ever built and was reconstructed by Polykrates after the original fell because of an earthquake. The base of the original columns and some blocks can still be seen. The Temple is just 7 kms to the south west of the Capital on the coast near the mouth of the Imvrasos River.
This is the Island’s main resort and is located on the south east side of the Island on the site of the ancient city of Samos. There is a lovely harbour that welcomes yachts cruising the Greek Islands. It was home to many famous Greek philosophers, Pythagoras, Aristarchus, Epicure and Aesop. Sites to visit include the Statue of Pythagoras, the Castle of Likourgos, the Church of Metamorphosis, The Ephpalinos Tunnel, the Church of Spiliani, the Roman Baths and the Lake of Glifada. It was no surprise when UNESCO recognized it as a Cultural World Heritage Site.

“We had a great time in Greece”
We had a great time in Greece, the first three days we had constant 20-25knots of wind, so we were able to do a lot of sailing. The boat was also in good condition and everything in working order…the boat did however look a bit older than a 2018 mode…

Greece Yacht Charters
Greece is a country in Southeast Europe, which is located in the Balkans. The country is embossed in four seas: the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Cretan Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea . Due to its advantageous location, Greece possesses one of the longest coastlines in the world. This outstanding feature makes the country an incredibly famous sailing destination. Beautiful golden beaches along the island, emerald transparent waters, pine forests in the mountains, and extremely pleasant weather will not leave any sailor indifferent. Deciding to charter a shining yacht, you make an investment in unforgettable memories and the desire to come back as a matter of course.
The reasons for which one must visit Greece are difficult to count as it has a lot to offer for everyone. Rich history, glorious past, impressive ancient buildings, delicious food and wine, an abundance of celebrations and festivals are waiting for you to explore the picturesque region. The pristine nature of Athens, Volos, Corfu, Kavala, and other Greek cities and perfect weather conditions create an ideal opportunity to rent a boat and melt into the pleasure.
Sailing Conditions in Greece
Being situated in Southeast Europe, Greece welcomes sailors from around the globe to feel all the benefits of the Mediterranean climate. Hot and dry summers with rare precipitation and clear skies provide a good opportunity for yacht rental without any fear of possible rains and extreme winds. The average temperature during the summer period never drops below 20 ºC even at night. It is impossible to miss such great weather and not to go far in the sea on your sailboat to enjoy the 30 ºC heat in the daytime. Greek winters are usually colder, especially in those areas that are close to mountains. But they are not lingering and not so cold to somehow disturb dedicated sailors. The sailing season usually starts in March and continues up to November, bringing different sailing conditions to the island.
Best Times for Vacation in Greece
Having an intention to make the most of your sailboat vacation in the breathtaking destination, it is necessary to get acquainted with the weather conditions of the desired period. As a rule, the peak season of sailing occurs in the summer months and up to the end of September . This time features extremely high air and water temperature and a huge number of sailors even in the remote marinas. By the way, Greek summers are an ideal time for those who are ready to forget about sleep and party the whole night. One of the most important things to consider is that in July, the northern wind Meltemi comes to the shore and creates many hazardous obstacles for sailing.
Spring and autumn wind speeds and summer conditions force you to choose this time period if you are looking for peace and quiet. There is no extreme heat and strong winds, as well as no abundance of people. You still can enjoy going bareboat without any unpleasant conditions and immerse yourself into the same active and loud festivals and celebrations.
Sailing Difficulty Level
Greece has already gained its high popularity as one of the world’s best sailing destinations . Because of its climate and location, the country represents great sailing options for beginners and professional sailors alike. The weather changes require sailors to explore the weather forecast beforehand to select the desired time for coming and know what to expect. The level of difficulty is mostly predetermined by the Meltemi wind of 6-8 force. Blowing from July to September may scary fresh sailors and even become a challenge for experienced professionals. If you are not highly skillful and just do not have enough confidence to manage the vessel by yourself, consider booking a boat in spring or autumn. The absence of powerful winds will not spoil your first sailing experience but contribute to positive impressions.
If you are still not ready to face the open water, 12 Knots is glad to provide you with the help of a qualified skipper and an opportunity to hire a crew . Being focused on the needs and desires of every sailor, we offer either a skipper to help to refresh the memories of handling a boat or a complete training process in our sailing school. Both options are delivered at their best quality and reasonable price.
Main Charter Bases
Greece is an incredibly important sailing destination for 12 Knots. Welcoming thousands of happy sailors every year, the country has a lot of well-equipped marinas and good mooring options. Depending on the desired part of the country, preferred city, and climate peculiarities, you may select a perfect one. The team of 12 Knots spreads their professional services on more than 30 bases along the coast. You may rent a yacht or boat at bases situated in the most famous Greek cities and islands:
- Santorini and many others
Boat Types for Charters
Having a great number of bases in possession, 12 Knots aims to provide sailors with powerful sailboats from leading manufacturers. Approximately 6,000 vessels are now available for charter in Greece. Sailing yachts, catamarans, powerboats, gulets, and houseboats are waiting for your booking. Do not hesitate and contact our team to become an owner of a white shining boat at a good cost. It is advisable to perform booking beforehand to avoid disappointment and misunderstanding.

What to do in samos, greece during a luxury yacht charter.
Written by Missy Johnston
Samos Island, Greece
A Kusadasi, Turkey to Rhodes, Greece yacht charter offers a seemingly endless supply of historical sites to see and fascinating legends to learn about. This is especially true in places such as Samos, Greece, which have so many interesting historical and mythological stories and people associated with them that history enthusiasts could spend hours just chatting with the locals.
Here are some of the most memorable and fun things to do as part of a Greek private luxury yacht cruise including the island of Samos.
Visit the fascinating historical sites on Samos
Local Boat building in Samos, Greece
It’s impossible to cover the island’s entire history and mythos, because Samos was home to so many notable people in real life and in legends. Pythagoras, Aristarchus, Epicurus, Eupalinos, Herodotus, and Aesop are among Samos’s real-life historical residents.
The Tunnel of Eupalinos and The Cave of Pythagoras are reminders of two men who once lived on the island. Between them, they made several contributions to humanity.
According to ancient myths, Hera, the wife of the Greek god, Zeus, also lived on Samos. The ruins of her temple lie in the southern part of Samos. It once contained 155 colossal columns, but today only one is left standing. Interestingly, this temple bears remnants of three or more temples that were there before, so the site has clearly been a place of worship for thousands of years.
Other historical places to see include the Roman Baths, the Castle of Lykourgos Logothetis, the convents of Zoodochos Pigi Aliotissa, the monastery of Agia Zoni, the church of Timios Stavros, the church of Panagia Sarandaskaliotissa, and the Sarakini Tower.
Explore the Samos Archaeological Museum
For a more structured tour through history, the Archaeological Museum is an excellent choice. It contains numerous examples of artifacts from the island’s archaeological sites and even features an enormous statue from the 6th century BC.
Enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings
Samos, Greece
If a refreshing hike up Mount Kerkis or a day relaxing on the beach sounds appealing, Samos can deliver.
The highest point of Mount Kerkis is the peak named Vigla. The hike features rare native plants and several different species of birds of prey, which should delight nature enthusiasts during the 4,701-foot journey.
Kerveli Beach offers unmatched peace and seclusion. Other lovely beaches include Psili Ammos Beach, Posidonio Beach, Heraion Beach, and Tsamadou Beach. The latter is relatively well-populated, with several nearby restaurants and taverns, but it’s also known as one of the most beautiful beaches on Samos.
An important island in both Greek mythology and history, Samos today, directly across from Kusadasi, Turkey should be on any charter itinerary from Kusadasi Turkey to Rhodes, Greece, cruising the Greek Dodecanese Islands.
