Yacht maintenance overview: how to properly care for your yacht.

  • June 7, 2021

Yacht maintenance is a crucial element of yacht ownership and operation. That gorgeous yacht sitting at the dock represents a substantial investment, and just like any asset, it must be protected and maintained to ensure reliable operation and to preserve value.

Maintaining your vessel is imperative, not just for peace of mind while operating, but for the safety of those aboard during use. The larger the yacht, maintenance can get more complex as the scale and complexity of the systems aboard the vessel increase.

service for yacht

At a high level, an owner should approach yacht maintenance by doing the following: When purchasing your new or used yacht, be sure to thoroughly ask your yacht broker or salesperson questions about maintenance and servicing schedules. Additionally, get familiar with the manufacturer’s ownership manuals as they contain a plethora of information regarding maintenance. Moreover, map out your cleaning and maintenance routines that will go hand-in-hand with using your yacht (more on these below). Lastly, if unsure what to do or how to handle a specific situation, never simply “wing” it. Always consult a professional to ensure the yacht is properly cared for and that you’re adhering to manufacturer recommended service and maintenance needs.

YACHT MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

For most yachts 40 feet and larger, the yacht will sit in the water full time. Regular care and maintenance is especially important in this scenario. For boaters in the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf’s waters have high levels of salinity which makes the water especially corrosive. For saltwater boaters, staying on top of yacht maintenance is crucial.

While not exhaustive, the following items are a good starting point for a regular care and maintenance schedule. Be sure to consult your manufacturer’s manuals and yacht servicing professionals for a more detailed yacht maintenance schedule.

Washing and cleaning the yacht  – Some owners may have the boat cleaned every month, but for those wanting their vessel to always be in excellent shape, every two weeks is better. All visible elements on the exterior of the yacht should be washed and cleaned. Streaks and dust should be removed. Any bird droppings should be eradicated. Additionally, canvas covers can be removed and all upholstery wiped down. Metal will be cleaned and polished, and woodwork scrubbed. Yacht owners can expect to pay on average $2-3 per foot for a thorough exterior cleaning.  Some yacht detail companies can also clean the interior which can involve dusting, cleaning countertops, toilets, sinks and more.

Clean the bottom of the yacht  – Once a month is a good rule of thumb, but in hotter, warmer water months, you may want to have this done more frequently. Similarly in cooler weather months, you could go a bit longer than a month. Having the barnacles cleaned off the bottom part of the boat on a regular basis is important. A smooth clean hull is crucial to long-term care and efficient performance of the yacht. Typically this involves a diver cleaning the hull from the water line and below to ensure all barnacles and other forms of algae and marine life are cleaned from the boat. The diver should also ensure all running gear below the water is free of barnacle growth. Yacht owners can expect to pay on average $2-3 per foot for an underwater cleaning. Alternatively, some services may charge hourly rates instead.

Also note that being in a higher current area can cause more frequent growth and the need for more frequent cleaning. It is good practice to ask the local dockmaster at your marina or a neighbor nearby how often they recommend getting the bottom cleaned.

Systems check  – Your yacht has a large number of systems that need to remain functional for a pleasant yachting experience. Air conditioning, pumps, exhaust and air intake, batteries, coolant levels, and fuel and lubrication are just a sampling of the systems that operate during regular usage. While some owners are comfortable checking the status of some or all of these systems themselves, other owners will opt for a regular systems check by a professional. During the season of regular use, it’s advised to have all systems checked once a month. This type of service will likely cost in the $200-$250 range for yachts in the 40-50 foot size range, and more for larger yachts.  After the service is performed, the service professional will provide you with a service report summary and any recommended courses of action.

Waxing the boat  – Every three to six months depending on sun exposure, the visible (topside of the boat from the waterline to the rub rail) parts of the boat should be waxed. When the hull is colored (such as blue or black), waxing frequency may increase.

Annual Engine, Drivetrain and Generator Service   – Once a year, you should have your yacht serviced. Haul out is not required, but it can be good practice to do so in order to check the bottom and running gear. This annual service is not too dissimilar from when car owners bring in their vehicles for regular servicing; all necessary items on the main engines, transmissions and generators will be serviced. The costs for annual servicing that includes engine maintenance will vary widely depending on your vessel, but smaller yachts can expect to pay approximately $3,000 (more if yacht is hauled out to check and service bottom and running gear). The costs increase with larger yachts.

Repainting the bottom of the yacht  – While every two years is considered by many to be sufficient, it’s good practice to haul out the yacht once a year to check the condition of and possibly repaint the bottom of the yacht’s hull (consider doing this alongside annual servicing). As the bottom of your vessel is cleaned and barnacles scraped off, the paint layers can thin and deteriorate. Costs will vary, but owners can expect to pay approximately $50/foot for a repainting of the hull.

Air conditioning system maintenance  – In hot climates such as Florida’s, air conditioning systems need regular maintenance. The air conditioning lines on a yacht in Florida should be acid flushed every six months to ensure a proper cleaning and removal of anything that has attached itself in the lines.

ADDITIONAL YACHT MAINTENANCE TIPS

1. Saltwater can lead to corrosion, so a few simple maintenance tasks after each run can be good practice. After each run, do a simple visual inspection of the engine room to check for any leaks. Also, be sure to give the boat a hose down to remove any salt particles. If possible, knowing how to flush your engine with fresh water after every run can be quite useful in maintaining your engine performance.

2. Keep a yacht maintenance log. Log all maintenance work and servicing done on the yacht with appropriate details and dates. Not only will this serve you well as you can know exactly what has been done and when, but this log can be useful to show potential buyers when you go to sell your yacht.

3. Have your mechanic pull oil samples from the engines, transmissions and generator to send to a lab for testing. The results will serve as a baseline on the health of the components and can often detect a possible issue before it becomes apparent otherwise. Keep records of the results for future reference.

4. If something goes wrong, use your mobile device to take a picture or video of the issue no matter how big or small the issue might seem. From engine codes to an odd noise coming from a various component, having documented evidence of the issue can be crucial in ensuring a speedy repairs process. On occasion, issues can be fickle and technicians might have a difficult time duplicating the reported issue. With your photo or video evidence, they can move quicker through the diagnosing process and move on to getting the appropriate parts or service needed.

5. If you have minor repairs that are not preventing you from enjoying the yacht, considering combining these repairs with regular service appointments. Examples of such minor repairs might be a small, interior light that isn’t working or a small tear in a seat cushion.

YACHT MAINTENANCE RESOURCES & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Yacht builders design engines and components with a countless number of vendors.

Note that there is not one specific engine manufacturer that is better than another in every situation. Depending on the yacht that it is going into, the application and what size and horespower is needed, a specific engine manufacturer might be recommended.  For instance, Cummins makes great smaller engines in the 300-715 horsepower range, CAT is most common in the 850-1925 horsepower range, MAN is common in the 800-1800 horsepower range, MTU is most common in the 1200-2600 horsepower range and Volvo is typically in the 300-900 horsepower range.

It’s common for individuals to inquire about what engine is best when they’re considering a yacht purchase. Be sure to ask your yacht broker or salesperson for more information and advice.

For owners looking to learn more about engine maintenance, use the links and information below to discover what your engine manufacturer recommends for maintenance. This is by no means an all-encompassing list. However, these are some of the larger engine manufactuer names in the industry:

  • MTU Diesel Engines  have an extraordinary history extending as far back as 1900. MTU is now a subsidiary of Rolls Royce Power Systems. The MTU Series 4000 Diesel has accumulated over 180,000,000 hours of operation.  Their engines are developed for a world of large commercial and passenger ships.
  • Caterpillar Marine Power Systems . Caterpillar Marine has the most comprehensive range of engine types in the world. CAT engines fall into several divisions including Cruisers, Fishing and Pleasure Craft. Worldwide dealer support is a powerful asset when considering engine types.
  • MAN Yacht Engines . The story of MAN Engines can be charted back to 1758 when St. Antony Ironworks began operation in Oberhausen Germany. Owners of a MAN Yacht Engine must sign off on approval of their merchandise, and that is just the introduction of their superb protection.
  • Cummins Marine . Worldwide support is a necessary factor when choosing your power plant. Cummins Marine is another recognizable brand that has been building marine engines since 1919. The Cummins Service Network is one of the widest in the world and extremely robust.
  • Volvo Penta Marine Leisure .  Volvo Penta has carved out a vast swath of the marine propulsion industry.  While other engine builders cater to the superyacht niche, Volvo Penta delivers marine systems for yachts in the 60 to 120-foot range. The company has built up a strong group of stern-drive engines for powerboats and a series of engines for sailboats.
  • Mercury Marine . Mercury is a well-known brand, and the Mercruiser line of engines are favorites on boats in the 40-foot range or less. Mercury carries a worldwide dealer network. This is a significant advantage when deciding on power. The company offers an extensive line of sterndrive and inboards. The Mercury Diesel is making inroads into larger boats and yachts.

While many yacht owners opt to leave the inner-operations of the vessel to yacht servicing and maintenance professionals, some owners enjoy gaining additional understanding of the various components that allow the yacht to operate. If you’re in the latter group, the below explains in further detail some of the systems and components that make up your yacht:

Fuel & Lubrication

Regular servicing of the fuel and lubrication systems is important. Typical fuel system problems will involve saltwater intrusion and corrosion. Proper maintenance might include draining the fuel tank, ensuring any sediment is cleaned out and replacing the fuel filters. Since emission controls bind modern diesel engines, additives in the fuel are now required. Ensure you’re using the proper marine diesel fuel by asking a professional and reading the manuals.

Clogged filters and a bad fuel pump can lead to fuel starvation. If a fuel pump is pushing air through the system, a number of problems can occur: the fuel pump bearings wear out quickly and injectors are not taking in the fuel at pressurized levels.

Reference manufacturer manuals to ensure the proper engine oil is being used.

Marine coolant is crucial to regular yacht operation. Just as oil, owners need to follow manufacturer guidelines. Marine coolants reduce corrosion, improve boiling points, neutralize engine by-products and stabilize engine temperatures. It is good practice to check the coolant before every trip.

Exhaust and Air Intake

Attentive owners will monitor smoke discharge at startup from the exhaust. While a small whiff of black smoke isn’t typically a concern, anything more might require further investigation. Examine your air filters regularly as they are key to engine performance and longevity.

Cylinder Heads and Blocks

Unless you are a professional mechanic with diesel system experience, a visual check is all that can to be done. Head bolts and valve timing adjustments are all torqued. Experienced owners who require pristine conditions may clean the engine area and cylinder block with degreaser products. Follow degreaser instructions closely and check with the owner’s manual. We typically recommend leaving any form of engine maintenance to professionals.

Electrical Systems

Anything electrical is typically left to professionals, but yacht owners can use common sense regarding simple oversight of the electrical system. The following are a few items to check on a regular basis: Ensure proper capacity levels in all batteries, examine connections into the engine for anything that may have worked its way loose, check that wire connections are properly sealed and that no evidence of corrosion exists, and replace bulbs on interior and running lights throughout the yacht.

Transmissions

The gearbox in your yacht is a mundane piece of fundamental machinery. There is little owners can do if a transmission starts to cause troubles. Visual inspection and checking fluids are necessary maintenance steps. Otherwise, a professional is required if anything goes wrong. Transmission problems are deceiving, and the frequent result is being dead in the water. Keep the equipment clean from saltwater and any surplus oil. As previously stated, regular oil sample analysis at your oil change intervals can help spot any potential issues before they cause major damage.

YACHT MAINTENANCE COSTS

The commonly-quoted rule of thumb in yachting is that owners should expect to pay 10% of the purchase price in annual operating costs. Yacht maintenance is certainly a part of this 10% estimate (along with other costs such as insurance, docking fees, fuel and more).

This rule of thumb, however, can vary depending on your purchase. If you purchase a new construction yacht, the 10% estimate is likely high due to the higher purchase price, the fact that fewer things will break on a newer vessel and that a number of such items are covered under the new yacht warranty. If you’re acquiring a used yacht for a lower purchase price, the maintenance and repairs cost will likely be higher.

When inquiring about a specific yacht, be sure to ask your broker or salesperson about projected maintenance costs.

Yacht service: getting your sailing yacht ready for the season

Oyster Dock

A guide to luxury yacht servicing with oyster yachts

Maintenance is a vital part of yacht ownership, but here at oyster, we recognise that time spent on pre-season checks can make all the difference between a frustrating start to the season, and a perfect start to the season..

With that in mind, we’ve put together our guide to servicing and getting your Oyster ready for the season ahead. From the water maker to the sail checks, to the winches and the main engine service, this is our owner’s handbook. Following our advice will allow you to stay on top of the annual maintenance and ensure you are ready to enjoy a great season of sailing.

Trust your yacht maintenance log

At Oyster, every owner receives a maintenance manual and a logbook when they take ownership of their yacht, which allows you to easily track your yacht’s maintenance history. Your Oyster logbook contains a weekly, monthly, bi-annual, annual, five-year and ten-year servicing checklist, which you can use to ensure you’re properly caring for your yacht.

Oyster owners have the added benefit that we keep all the original plans and build logs on file, so buyers can refer to the original intentions when your yacht was specified and built. Keeping your logbook updated will also help increase the residual value of your yacht, as new buyers prioritise well-maintained boats.

How long does a yacht service take?

When carried out by Oyster, an annual yacht service takes two weeks with the yacht out of the water. This allows for the application of new antifouling paint and servicing of the rudder, propeller, seacocks and thrusters. It is also a good time to polish the hull and superstructure.

Each Oyster yacht service is unique to the boat, and it depends on its current condition and your plans for the season ahead. Our  service team  will create an honest list of requirements, scoping everything from canvas work to winches, meaning you can set sail for the season, confident in the knowledge you are ready to take on anything.

What to expect from your pre-season check and annual yacht haul-out

Annual pre-season checks and preparations for an Oyster may include:

  • Sails valeted
  • A visual check of your rigging or official survey of your yacht rig, if in commercial use
  • Engines and generators serviced
  • All systems checked over – air-conditioning, refrigeration, LPG, electrics, and electronics
  • Annual safety equipment checks

And once she’s lifted out of the water for her annual haul-out:

  • Antifouling, repainting, polishing
  • Service of propeller, shaft, and cutlass bearings
  • Rudder and keel checks
  • Replacement of anodes
  • Service of seacocks and thrusters

McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers

Service Your Boat

McMichael Yacht Yards offers a full range of yacht repair, maintenance, and customization for boats up to 50′ LOA. The following list highlights many of the key yacht services our two McMichael Yacht Yards offer.  Larger yachts and sailboats are traditionally serviced at the McMichael Post Road Yard while power boats are serviced by the McMichael Rushmore Yard.

Interior Cleaning & Restoration

If asked, you’d probably name these three priorities for your boat: reliability/performance, appearance, and being clean. Regardless how diligent you are about cleaning your boat after every use, there are still nooks and crannies that you just never get to. Under the sink in the head, behind the garbage bucket in the galley, down deep in lockers and the anchor chain well.

Dirt and dampness in these areas can create mildew and mold – two things no owner wants on a boat. McMichael can help you avoid these conditions during the season, at decommissioning (so small problems don’t become large ones over the winter), or during a spring commissioning. We offer the following services in our yard, and, is some instances, can travel to clean and restore your boat:

  • Deep cleaning services – interior and exterior
  • Cushion repairs and replacements
  • Interior woodwork cleaning and refurbishment
  • Engine compartment cleaning

Schedule Service:

Canvas Repair & Replacement

The majority of your boat’s canvas is exposed to the elements most of the time. On a mooring or a dock, your cockpit and sail covers must withstand the damaging forces of UV rays, rain, cold, and heat. Canvas eventually dries out and, if not repaired or replaced, the part of your boat the canvas was designated to protect is left exposed.

McMichael has partnerships with canvas professionals who will come to your boat, take custom measurements, present to you your canvas and trim options, create new pieces, and install them. Keep your boat looking good and operating properly by always having quality protective canvas covering in place.

McMichael and its partners can also assist with decorative canvas work including new cushion covers for the interior and cockpit as well as accent cushions and other accessories.

It's often the interior and exterior wood trim that enables a boat to standout. Having woodwork that is worn, chipped or missing can deliver the wrong message about a boat and its owner. The skilled carpentry and woodcare team at McMichael can bring new life back to your boat.

Our carpentry and woodcare solutions include:

  • Replacing broken woodwork
  • Fixing and replacing cabinetry and lazarette covers
  • Cleaning and renewing unvarnished teak decks and accessories
  • Replacing/repairing floorboards
  • Full varnish services
  • Adding new components (handrails, hatch covers, trim pieces)

Electronics

Some of the electronics on your boat are simple, and you can figure them out yourselves; however, the majority of them are sophisticated, computer-driven digital readouts that are as complicated as the computer on your desk. Rather than risk damaging your instruments (or your computer), you call in a trained electronic technician when needed. For your boat, the electronics team at McMichael has no peers.

Installation We will replace antiquated or broken electronic instruments with state-of-the-art systems from all the major suppliers including B&G, Garmin, and Raymarine. We will expertly connect them to sensors on your mast, through your hull, on your engine, or throughout your boat to provide you accurate and dependable information always.

Repair Should you have a problem with one of your electrical systems, the McMichael electronics team will diagnose, fix or replace the broken instrument, sensor, or system. We work quickly and often the only delay for repairs is awaiting receipt of the replacement parts.

Interior & Exterior Lighting While not as complex as digital instrumentation, having properly installed lighting systems will allow you to enjoy your boat to its fullest.

Nothing is more frustrating than going below in your boat in the dark and your cabin lights don’t work. We will test your lighting system, replace faulty bulbs, connectors, fittings, and switches so the next time you need illumination, the lights go on.

Your on-deck and navigational lights also need regular maintenance and, at times, repairs/upgrades. Nothing is worse than one of your navigational lights not working when making a passage in the dark. We fix these systems all the time.

And, if you’re in the mood for some custom underwater or on-the-mast display lighting while at anchor, we will help you design and then install decorative lighting systems to make your boat standout in the fleet.

Engines & Mechanical

Regardless of whether you have a power boat or a sailboat, having a well-maintained engine that you can rely upon is the foundation of any boating season. McMichael provides professional engine and mechanical services for all manufacturer’s products. We also service inboards, outdrives, and outboards at both of our yards.

McMichael provides trained and certified service for: Yamaha, Volvo Penta and Yanmar.

Maintenance The ideal time to perform routine maintenance on your engine is in the spring before the boat is fully commissioned. We will check and replace as necessary all fluids, filters, and belts.

We will also conduct manufacturer-recommended diagnostics as required to identify and address any potential issues before they become on-the-water problems.

Repair Nothing is more frustrating than when your boat’s engine breaks down. The mechanical team at McMichael has “seen it all” and stands at the ready to diagnose and correct whatever malfunction is keeping your engine from operating properly.

Our customers appreciate the special relationships they have developed with our service team over the years and often call us when away on a cruise to help them diagnose and correct an engine problem. This is the high-touch service that McMichael is known for.

Replacement When an engine has reached the end of its life, you don’t have to scuttle the boat. For over 80 years, McMichael has been putting new life into customers’ boats by repowering them with new, state-of-the-art engines and components.

Fiberglass Repair

Chances are that the majority of your boat’s hull and interior are made of fiberglass. This strong, lightweight material is ideal for boat building, however, over time it can craze or crack and, thanks to the occasional mishap, become punctured or otherwise damaged.

It’s a true art to be able to repair, refresh, and renew the structure or surface made of fiberglass. McMichael has the best fiberglass repair team in the northeast and has decades of experience making tired, worn, or damaged fiberglass surfaces look new. Topsides, decks, interiors made to look as they were the day your bought the boat will let you enjoy your time one the water even more.

There may be many systems in your boat you know how to fix yourself, but hydraulic systems are probably not one of them. Have McMichael inspect your boats’ hydraulic systems, report on any problems detected, and make the necessary repairs. These would include hydraulics controlling:

  • Backstay and headstay rams
  • Mast lifters
  • Steering controls
  • Floor/deck lifting systems
  • Drop-down swim platforms
  • Pumps, lines, connectors, and pressure indicators

Making sure your boat’s topsides and bottom are properly painted will deliver benefits on many levels. Obviously, having proper bottom paint on a boat stored in the water all summer will help deter a fouled bottom. Fouled bottoms not only look unsightly, but they dramatically reduce your boat’s performance (speed capabilities and fuel economy). And, if your topsides look tired and worn, a new coat of paint can give your boat a new lease on life.

Talk to McMichael about the painting needs of your boat including:

Racing Bottoms For performance sailboat racers, having a smooth, clean, and fast bottom can put you on the podium…or keep you off it. Some of the area’s fastest racers have had McMichael put our custom “racing bottoms” on their boats. With a choice of paint colors and ablative characteristics, our racing bottoms are custom sprayed, faired, and sanded down to 800 grit paper. A racing bottom will cost you a bit more, but it will pay for itself multiple times over with the performance improvements you’ll experience

Club Bottoms Even if racing isn’t your thing, you still want to have a clean, well performing bottom so you can cruise more efficiently and burn less fuel when under power. McMichael offers a broad range of bottom paints that will help fight algae build-up that will accumulate over the summer. Talk with us about your plans for your boat and where you store it. Then, we’ll recommend a bottom paint option that will fit your needs and your budget.

Topsides Clean, shinny topsides make are a positive reflection of your boat and you as its owner. If your topsides are dull and oxidizing, you have two options:

  • You can repaint your topsides in the current or a new color, or,
  • If appropriate, McMichael can polish and buff the current topside paint to possibly renew its luster.

Decks You and your on-board companions are usually the only ones to get a close-up look at the condition of your deck paint. Regardless, your deck paint is important for both cosmetic and moisture-prevention purposes. If your deck paint is getting flaky, dull or is starting to crack and craze, talk to McMichael about the benefits of having your deck paint renewed, particularly if the underlying surface has shown signs of cracks that would allow damaging moisture between the deck and the interior’s overhead.

Plumbing Systems

A boat’s plumbing systems are probably the least thought-about parts of a boat…until they don’t work. McMichael’s plumbing systems team can repair any damaged system on your boat and, importantly, the team is trained to routinely inspect the condition of your plumbing systems performing preventative maintenance so you can avoid those awkward and embarrassing situations when your boat’s plumbing goes foul.

  • Electric or manual
  • Hardware/fittings
  • Hoses and connectors
  • Holding tanks and pump-out connectors

Water Pumps

  • Actual pumps
  • Hot and cold-water systems
  • Water tanks
  • Deck fill fittings
  • Washdown systems

Running Rigging On sailboats, the running rigging incurs the wear and tear during normal use. It’s not your fault that the covering on a halyard or sheet is worn, it’s just part of sailing. McMichael will check your running rigging, let you know if any lines need replacement, and then do the work for you including:

  • Inspecting sheets and halyards for worn spots
  • Rewhip frayed ends of lines
  • Inspect running backstay systems
  • Check that all control lines (vang, cunningham, etc.) are in serviceable condition

Standing Rigging On your sailboat, perhaps the last things you routinely check for wear and tear are the various component’s standing rigging. If one or more parts of your standing rigging should fail, you could be facing major problems…and expenses. Contact McMichael and have us check your standing rigging. If any parts need servicing or replacement, we’ll contact you immediately with a recommend plan of attack. Let us check for the following:

Mast and Boom

  • Signs of pitting around where fixtures are attached
  • Blocks’ sheaves not worn and leads in working condition?
  • Spreader attachment points signs of wear or fatigue
  • Paint chips
  • Stress cracks

Shroud Servicing

  • Swage attachment point condition
  • Spreader endcaps padded
  • Failing wire shroud at swage points
  • Condition of turnbuckles

Headstay Furlers

  • Roller furler bearings condition – top and bottom
  • Furler line condition
  • Headstay foil condition
  • Installation of proper luff feeder
  • If any stanchions are wobbly and need to be reseated
  • Bent stanchions or pulpits
  • Are lifelines fraying or wearing
  • Do some of the lifelines require padding

Furling Systems

  • Dutchman lines are still serviceable
  • Permanent boom sail covers are in good shape
  • In-boom furlers are properly lubricated and aligned
  • All control lines are in satisfactory condition

Racing Prep

If you race your sailboat, you know there’s a lot that goes into preparing a competitive program. Many of the boats that have come to McMichael for racing prep have made it to the podium in club, regional, national, and international regattas.

McMichael offers racing sailors top-of-the-line sailboat racing prep in a range of areas:

  • Ratings measurements – ORC, ORR, PHRF
  • Racing bottoms (photo)
  • Upgraded  standing rigging
  • Upgraded running rigging
  • Grand-prix navigational instruments

Very rarely do I get to have such phenomenal experience with anyone in the boating industry… But the experience with Paul–Cross Chartering Yacht Transport was nothing short of spectacular. The timing, the care, the professionalism…. Makes me wanna buy another yacht just so I can ship it with him haha. Feel free to send people my contact info for referrals. A++++ all the way <3

The team at Cross Chartering Yacht Transport safely and efficiently moved 96′ S/Y Symmetry from St. Thomas to La Paz. This was our second voyage with Paul Haber and his group. Even our grumpy captain was happy, that rarely occurs!

Initially, I received 3 shipping quotes; Paul’s was a good amount cheaper so I was skeptical but man was the experience incredible!!! The attention to detail was beyond professional. Unlike other shipping companies that book you and then you only hear from them twice (loading day & delivery day). Paul has an entire team that was in-touch with me almost daily. He treats your boats like his own and I will never use or recommend anyone but Paul and Cross Chartering!

How to service a winch: an expert’s guide

  • Theo Stocker
  • August 11, 2020

Servicing a winch and keeping it running smoothly is not only part of good boat care, it's also critical to safety on board. The experts at Harken UK showed Theo Stocker how it's done

Harken Radial Winch

Harken Radial Winch Credit: Theo Stocker

Winches carry huge loads. If the internal mechanism doesn’t work properly, the winch can spin and pass these loads straight through the handle, which can be enough to break an arm.

Keeping your winches running smoothly is a safety-critical job, as well making sail handling that much easier. The good news is that modern winches are evolving to make maintenance easier and reduce the time required for the annual service.

A work bench prepared for servicing winches

It is best to service your winches on a work bench

Once you know what you’re doing, it shouldn’t take more than an hour to an hour and a half to service a winch.

That’s a morning’s work for two of you on board.

It is worth doing at the end of the season before leaving the boat on the hard for the winter.

We went along to Harken’s customer service centre in Lymington , where senior technical service advisor Alun Hughes took us through the finer points of servicing a winch.

What you need for servicing winches

Servicing on a work bench is the best place to do it, and many winches can be unbolted from the deck surprisingly easily.

If you do it in situ, be careful not to lose small moving parts – pawls, springs, and bearing rings.

A piece of cloth or card taped to the deck and over the guard rails can help.

Tools for servicing a winch

Or cut a hole in the bottom of a cardboard box and tape that over the winch as a catch-all device.

Cover your decks to protect them from oil or grease, and have a flat area to lay out the parts in order.

This will make putting the winch back together much easier.

Depending on the make, type and age of winch you’re servicing, you may need different tools.

Check beforehand what spares you may need so you can do the job in one go.

Tools you’ll need:

  • Large flat-headed screwdriver
  • Small flat-headed screwdriver (fine enough to get under pawl springs)
  • Plastic mallet
  • Spare pawls
  • Pawl springs
  • Winch grease
  • Pawl oil (machine oil)
  • 1 inch brush
  • Containers for clean and dirty parts, or tray to lay them out on.

Another tool that can come in handy to hold the winch steady is an old winch handle, out of which you have drilled the locking mechanism.

This will let you unscrew the screw at the base of the handle socket

Things to look out for when servicing your winches

You’d be surprised how much muck can build up inside your winches.

This winch was serviced 12 months previously and, after a winter on the hard, was used on a racing boat for one season in the Solent.

A bearing of a winch covered in salt and muck

Bearings must run free

It is completely caked in solidified grease, salt and dirt.

The pawls are not free to spring into place – a real safety concern.

Clogged pawls on a winch

Clogged pawls

The bearings aren’t spinning freely, risking doing major damage to the winch.

Making sure that it’s clean is crucial to prolonging its life before it needs replacement, and preventing injuries on board if it back-winds.

Disassembling the winch

1 remove socket, top cap and self tailer old harken winch service

1. All winches will have some form of top plate holding the self-taling arm on and the rest of the winch in place.

Harken winches have a screw at base of handle socket, and once loosened the screw will remain captive.

First, remove the socket and top cover.

Lewmar winches have an O-ring that locks the stripper arm in place, and two small collets sit in a groove to hold the spindle in place.

Older winches such as those manufactured by Gibb and less modern Antal winches often have a circlip holding a top plate in place.

Andersen winches are secured with three screws.

On the Harken winch (above), there are three screws under the top plate to remove the self tailing arm.

1 remove main drum harken old winch service

2. Slide the main drum up.

While you are doing this, be sure to tip the top of the drum away from you so the base is pointing inboard.

Be careful when you are doing this because any bearing rings that have come off with the drum could slide out and roll away from you.

The inner drum assembly takes much of the lateral loading in the winch.

This means the bearing surfaces and ring gear are most likely to get gummed up with salt and dirt that has mixed with the winch grease.

Slide the bearing rings up and off the inner drum, carefully checking the bearing cage and bearings for cracking, scoring or any other problems.

1 central housing and drive gear harken old winch service

3. Next, undo the screws holding the inner drum assembly together (found on the Harken winch).

It may need a light tap to loosen it – then lift it off and tip it away from you again, as there are more bearings inside.

Around the bottom of the inner drum assembly, your winch may also have a ring of bearings, though some have simple bushings.

It should not be necessary for you to take these bearings apart – a spray cleaner should be sufficient.

You should also check that there is a gap of a couple of bearings’ width so that the bearing can spin freely.

Be sure to have a look inside the inner drum assembly.

This may be the worst for salt and a build-up of dirt, as it is positioned immediately underneath the handle socket.

1 main gear and pawls harken old winch service

4. You can then remove the spindle and bottom gear.

The bottom gears connect the shaft to the drum, so take much of the rotational loading of the winch.

The bottom gear may need a screwdriver underneath it to persuade it upwards.

Place the whole assembly in a pot to avoid it getting muddled with other parts.

Inspecting the gears is a crucial step, as a failure here can result in gears not engaging, and the full load on the winch being passed into the winch handle,

If you find excessive wear, it could be due to dirt or lack of servicing, or the fact that the winch has been used in too high a gear.

Reversing the handle and using the easier gear sooner can help prevent wearing the edges of the pawls and gears.

1 main gear and pawls harken old winch service

5. When removing the pawls, make sure you keep the right pawls with the right gear, as these range in size from 8-12mm.

Do this for each of the gears, including the idler gear and main drive gear.

Check all surfaces and if they’re looking worn, cracked or dented then they should be replaced.

1 winch base and pinions harken old winch service

6. Pinions are the vertical steel pins around which the gears revolve.

On older Harken winches, these were set directly into the base metal but not supported at the top.

On newer winches they are supported top and bottom and held in plastic bushings.

On Lewmar winches, they are slotted in from above, in which case you’ll have to lift them out to remove the gears.

Any movement in these at all is a major concern.

If it is an issue you should definitely talk to the manufacturer.

The plastic bushings at either end of the gear pinions on modern winches need o be checked to make sure the bushings are not cracked or worn.

If they are, they can be easily removed, cleaned and replaced.

Cleaning and reassembling winches

3 Cleaning bath toothbrush winch service harken

1. A wipe down with a clean rag may be sufficient, but if there’s any more than clean grease, it’s best to use a solvent.

Professionals often have cleaning baths which most of us have access to.

Using mineral-based solvents such as diesel, petrol or thinners will work.

These shouldn’t be used if you’re doing the servicing on board, as they are environmentally harmful and can mark or damage decks.

Water-soluble degreasers such as bike cleaning products are better.

Pour 2 inches into the bottom of a bucket and use a stiff-bristled tooth brush to get all the grease out.

Flat bearing surfaces can be cleaned with a plastic scourer or Scotchbrite pad, but never use wire wool or a metal scraper.

Rinse the parts with a detergent to remove traces that would degrade the new grease.

Steps of Harken Winch Servicing at Harken in Lymington - using a brush to grease the parts

2. If you’ve laid out the parts in the order they came off, putting the winch back together should be straightforward.

Otherwise an exploded diagram from the manufacturer will be a help.

You can re-grease each component as you put it back together.

Racing boats that are serviced regularly use oil to minimise friction, but suitable grease is fine for everything but these elite boats.

You’re aiming for a thin, even coat on any surfaces with metal-on-metal contact, with no blobs that will harden and gum up over time.

This is best done by brushing the grease on with a 1inch brush.

A white or coloured grease, rather than clear, will help you see if you’ve missed any bits.

1 oiling pawls and replace main gear harken old winch service

3. When it comes to the pawls, the viscosity of grease can make these stick and stop the ratchet engaging.

The springs and pawls, and their housings, therefore just need a two drops of mineral oil – one below and above the pawl socket.

Use proper pawl oil here, as standard oils such as 3-in-1 are too light and will quickly rinse out.

1 oiling pawls and replace main gear harken old winch service

When replacing the pawl spring, note that for some makes, one arm is straight from the circular part and the other is bent perpendicular.

The straight arm lies against the pawl, and the bent arm lies against the pawl housing in the gear ring .

1 oiling pawls and replace main gear harken old winch service

4. Pinch the spring and pawl together and slide into the gear ring before replacing the assembly.

Give it a spin to make sure it’s engaging properly with the gear.

On modern winches the ratchet gear ring can be bi-directional, meaning its internal teeth will engage with the pawls whichever way it’s put on.

Every other year, flip over which way this is put on to prolong life.

Older winches need the gears to face one way.

Make sure the end face of the pawl sits flush against the gear ratchet and clicks positively onto the next one.

Place the pawl cover plate over the gear ring before greasing the shaft.

Finally, give the outside of the bearings a light brush with grease.

1 replacing central spindle harken old winch service

5. The main bearing rings of modern winches are self-lubricating nylon rather than metal.

They should just need a rinse off to remove the salt, though a little grease on the central bearing surface is a good idea.

With the central housing dropped back in place, replace the screws to be hand-tight.

If you have a torque driver, you can check this, but it’s not essential.

Tighten the screws nearest to the drive gear first and then work your way round.

If stainless screws go into bronze, it’s worth using Tef-Gel paste to prevent corrosion between dissimilar metals.

At each stage of reassembling the winch, spin the gears to make sure they are engaging properly.

Check you’ve put it all back together correctly.

1 greasing ring gear harken old winch service

6. Before you replace the drum, make sure the ring gear teeth around the inside of its base are all evenly coated with grease.

If your winch is self-tailing, replace the rope stripper.

Most winches give some options of how to line this up.

You want it pointing into the cockpit so line coming off the winch doesn’t go overboard.

The self-tailing gripper rings are held together with springs.

Professional Yacht Delivery By A Licensed Master Captain

Vessel boat relocation.

Trusted Yacht Delivery is a Florida-based vessel relocation business specializing in navigating the waters of the United Stated and the Caribbean. Whether it’s a motor vessel, powerboat, or commercial vessel, our qualified and credentialed Captains and Crew can safely deliver or relocate various types of vessels to a location that is most convenient to you.

We serve various types of clients, including manufacturers, brokers, dealers, and owners, and we specialize in making vessel deliveries to ports around the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and the U.S. Atlantic & Gulf Coasts. In addition, we can also make vessel deliveries anywhere around the world.

At Trusted Yacht Delivery, we provide yacht delivery and relocation services that are professional and satisfactory. We can also deliver and relocate new construction vessel builds for dealerships and manufacturers, from the shipyard to the point of sale.

One of the most common reasons why vessel and yacht owners are unable to relocate their boats themselves is lack of time. Trusted Yacht Delivery is here for the convenience and peace of mind of boat owners who are too busy to relocate their vessels themselves.

Most of our Captains have thousands of hours of experience in doing offshore deliveries, and some of them have extensive knowledge traversing the waters of the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Many of our Captains also have mechanical degrees, giving them the capability to tend to the needs of older boats that require more mechanical attention.

Want to know more about our yacht delivery services? Please visit our FAQs or Rates/Fees page.

Call 855-373-0700 today for a fast and free quote, about the owner.

Captain Dave Subers is a boat delivery and charter specialist with a USCG 100-ton Masters License , as well as thousands of miles of experience. He personally handles vessel relocation jobs, but he also has many licensed Captains, Mates and Engineers available to help with the safe and timely of your vessel.

As a responsible captain, there are two things that he prioritizes in every vessel relocation job his business handles: the safety of everybody in the yacht, and the proper care and protection of the vessel.

Yacht Delivery

Our yacht delivery and relocation services include deliveries to new owners, vessel relocations to new cruising grounds, transfers between dealerships, moving the yacht for the upcoming season, and repositioning for boat shows. With Trusted Yacht Delivery, you can expect that your precious yacht will be delivered to the target location in excellent condition.

Serving the entire East Coast throughout the Caribbean, the Gulf Coast, and anywhere around the world.

Long Distance Deliveries

Long distance delivery jobs are physically demanding and may continue for more than a day, so the Captain will have to bring an additional crewmember with him.

Hiring an extra crewmember can give you peace of mind knowing that your valuable boat will be delivered in a safe and responsible manner. On long distance deliveries, you can expect that your vessel will arrive to you in excellent condition.

A report regarding the overall condition of your vessel will be provided to you upon completion of the boat delivery.

Vacation Yacht Delivery

If you want to make the most out of your vacation with family or friends, have your vessel delivered straight to your vacation destination instead of having to take it there yourself. This eliminates the need to worry about how to get the boat to the desired location and also frees up a lot of your time, allowing you to solely focus your attention on enjoying and having fun. And once the vacation concludes, you can have your vessel safely returned to your home port.

We understand that time can indeed be limited to some vacationers. If that’s the case for you, Captain Dave Subers and his experienced crew can help you out. We will come to your home port and pilot your vessel to your desired vacation spot, giving you the convenient option to book a plane to your destination and arrive there early. After the vacation, your yacht will be safely returned to your property.

Vessel Port-to-Port Delivery

For vessels that need to be transferred to a new location, Captain Dave Subers and his experienced crew can handle one-way vessel deliveries with ease. Whether it’s a commercial vessel, a motor vessel, or a powerboat, we can safely deliver it from any port to the boat dock or harbor of your choice.

As a yacht delivery business that prioritizes the safety of his clients’ vessels, we will use near coastal ocean routes for vessel deliveries whenever possible, making every yacht delivery as safe as it can be. Aside from that, we will do our best to move the vessel when the sun is up and select the route that is safest for sailing.

UGA students help save 3 after car goes into Brier Creek

Car goes into Brier Creek at Ellison Bridge boat ramp

SARDIS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Five University of Georgia students are being called heroes after they helped save three people when a car rolled into Brier Creek at the Ellison Bridge boat ramp on Friday.

Students help save driver and two children after a vehicle went into Brier Creek in Burke County.

According to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, the students saw a white SUV leave the roadway and roll over into the creek.

The sheriff’s office says along with the driver, there were two children in the vehicle.

The students quickly jumped into the creek to help remove the occupants from the vehicle, officials say.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office credited the young ladies, pictured above on its Facebook page, saying “they quickly turned around, went to the crash site, and without hesitation jumped in the water and pulled the driver and two children out of the vehicle. The quick thinking and bravery of these women is absolutely admirable. We are grateful you were in the right place at the right time

Man missing after boating incident at Kinchant Dam near Mackay

A CQ Rescue staff member sits at the side of a helicopter as it flies over a body of water.

A rescue helicopter has joined police in the search for a man missing in a boating mishap during a family day out at a popular north Queensland dam.

Police were called to Kinchant Dam, about 35km south-west of Mackay, at 11.14am after the man and his daughter went overboard from their broken-down boat.

The girl, 9, was rescued from the water at 11.45am and taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

A Queensland police spokesperson said the man had not been seen since.

A woman and three other children were also on board and were safely taken to shore at 12.29pm.

A police boat, State Emergency Service volunteers with three boats, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service swift water rescue and CQ Rescue are part of the search efforts.

The dam has been closed to all recreational users, with campers at the popular site asked not to enter the water.

Challenging conditions

Senior Sergeant Trevor Robson said a man on a jet-ski had located the nine-year-old but could not find her father.

The rest of the family was rescued from the boat, which soon sank despite being anchored.

"The biggest challenge to finding him at the start was the weather and the cloud cover, which makes it very hard to see into the water," Senior Sergeant Robson said.

Family members remained at the dam this afternoon.

"We will go until the light fails us today and then we will be back first thing in the morning," Senior Sergeant Robson said.

Boat owners join search

The dam is a popular weekend destination for camping, boating, water sports and fishing.

Kinchant Waters Caravan Park lessee Gordon Howard said boat owners joined the search as soon as the accident was reported.

"We have heard that they couldn't get the boat running and the little girl fell overboard and her father jumped in to save her," Mr Howard said.

Looking between two police vehicles at officers standing in front of a fire truck, with a dam in the background.

"It's a very windy day on the water and the wind blew the boat away from the child.

"It's just a tragic situation for everyone here this weekend."
