Guide to Trogir

A UNESCO-listed town filled to the brim with architectural treasures

So impressive are the historical treasures lying within the medieval walls of Trogir that the Croatian town has been awarded a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Each summer its harbor becomes a hive of superyacht activity thanks to its mix of charming architecture, glittering waterfront and laid-back way of life.

Located on an islet at the heart of the Dalmatian Coast, Trogir is just 17 miles from Split , and linked by bridges to both the mainland and to the far larger Čiovo Island. Its old town is one of the most finely preserved in the Adriatic, boasting palaces, belfries and maze-like marbled streets fanning out from an antique central square. Romanesque and Renaissance buildings have been carefully preserved to retain their glory-day charm, creating a calming sense of authenticity and earning the town the nickname ‘The Stone Beauty’. The town is the perfect place to stop while enjoying a crewed Mediterranean yacht charter in this region of the Adriatic.

For its size, Trogir punches above its weight for historical sights, the most famous of which is the Cathedral of St Lawrence. This unique monument was finally completed in 1240 and, following a colourful history spanning over four centuries of attacks and rebuilding, exhibits three separate architectural styles. At 47 metres high, it is the highest building in Trogir, and its tower offers the best views over the town and surrounding area.

If you enter Trogir via the mainland you’ll be greeted by a statue of local patron St John guarding his community. Continue to explore and you’ll find treats such as the historic town hall, which hosts summer concerts in its Gothic courtyard, the 14th century Loggia with its Renaissance reliefs and sculptures, and the artwork-filled Benedictine Monastery of St Nicholas.

After a day wandering around the many sights, the harbour will be a welcome respite as the sun begins to set. A cluster of bars and restaurants line the waterfront here and provide the perfect place to watch the luxury yachts bobbing on the water and enjoy the incredible scenery that this part of the world has to offer.

Trogir: The Stone Capital of the Middle Adriatic

yachtman trogir

Small, peculiar, noble and rustic, artisanal and piscatory – Trogir is one of those towns that looks like it had existed forever

A place where legends and reality are intertwined in an alchemic story and where time seems to have stopped somewhere around the Middle Ages – that’s Trogir.

Where is Trogir in Croatia?

The stone capital of the Middle Adriatic located in a narrow sea strait is actually older than both Split and Dubrovnik . Ceramic remains dating back to 2000 BC were unearthed in this ancient town, and a small flint weapon was found in Trapljeni Doci, a village in Trogir’s hinterland. It was probably a weapon that a Neanderthal man used some 45,000 years ago to hunt and chase away his fellow Neanderthal men from Neanderthal women in the hills surrounding Trogir.

Split to Trogir

Being this close to Split airport means that Trogir is the ideal starting point for numerous yachts people sailing on chartered vessels from Trogir marinas . A thousand-year-old town whose stone facades are filled with traces of history should definitely be included in your summer itinerary if your crusing route leads to Dalmatia.

Trogir, city aerial view, Croatia

The architecture of the aristocratic palaces, numerous fortifications, churches and other ancient buildings that make up the town’s core, combined with timeless stories and legends of this castle at sea, Trogir undoubtedly attracts time travellers – because coming to Trogir means going back in time. The experience will be even better if you decide to stay at one of the small historic hotels that more and more old palaces and houses are being turned into.

Trogir Old town

If you wander through Trogir’s medieval walls and streets, and you only need to take 365 steps to walk across it horizontally, and twice as much vertically, you will undoubtedly think you’ve gone back in time and expect to meet an idle nobleman, or at least a page. As an homage to the periods of prosperity that the town had in the 13th and 14th ct., a medieval festival is held here in springtime, featuring displays of ancient crafts, meals and drinks, costumed street performers, knight competitions and medieval musicians.

Luxury sailing yacht Anima Maris sailing

Anima Maris

The luxury sailing yacht Anima Maris features superior design and elegant proportions. By all means, this two-deck yacht offers a unique cruising experience for 12 guests. Board a 49-meter-long Anima Maris and enjoy unforgettable moments surrounded by the amazing Adriatic coastline.

The event is organised by an association of enthusiasts who are in love ‘with the ever better past’. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon Kairos, the Greek god of opportune moment, because, according to the legend, he stops by Trogir when he gets tired of lounging around the relief made by famous Greek sculptor Lysippos from the 4th century BC, which is kept in the Benedictine monastery of St. Nicholas. It was discovered in 1928 in family Stanošević’s modest home, and there is a story that the marble relief, one of three of its kind in the world, was used by a Trogir housewife to press a bowl of salty sardines, completely clueless about the treasure she was dealing with.

Trogir streets

The legend goes that Kairos, Zeus’ youngest son, should be grasped by the tuft of his hair for only then will you experience true luck. This relief was not found in just any house, but in a family home whose members were chancellors in the Kingdom of Hungary. This is a world-class discovery and it is possible that a member of the Stanošević family had purchased it on a diplomatic trip in Asia Minor.

What to do in Trogir

Roko Slade-Šilović, a pharmacist, conservator and founder of the Society for the Preservation of Antiquities in Trogir, discovered it in the Interwar Period and then the relief was written about by the director of the Archaeological Museum in Split at the time, Mihovil Abramić, in an article that is still relevant today. ‘The relief from the Hellenistic period symbolizes the desire to capture the fleeting moment, the tuft of luck of Kairos, who has tiny wings on his feet and back, and flies somewhere past us,’ says Trogir’s chronicler and historian prof Ivo Babić, PhD.
If you want your love to last forever, then you must, as another Trogir legend says, kiss next to the ‘tree of love’.

Ston Walls Peljesac Croatia

Croatia Ston: History and Gastronomy Behind Ancient Walls

It is a very peculiar tree, the crown of which Trogir lovers have been using as a hiding place since the ancient times. Trogir was founded as a settlement called Tragurion by Greek merchants who came from the island of Vis in 380 BC, and since then it has been usurped by many other European conquerors, who always left their mark on it. The medieval core is full of historic palaces, churches, noblemen’s, merchants’ and craftsmen’s houses, and is inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is located on a 500-meter-long and about 250-meter-wide islet, embedded between the mainland and the island of Čiovo, to which it is connected by three bridges, one of which is pedestrian.

The bay of Kaštela is located to the east. It was once called the bay of Salona, after the Roman capital of Salona, the remains of which can be found in and around today’s Solin. While Trogir was under Roman rule, emperor Claudius had villas for his decommissioned generals built there. Hungarian king Bela IV of the Arpad dynasty liked Trogir and in 1242 he fled there to hide from the bloodthirsty Tatars, and so, fearing for his life, he escaped to a tiny islet in the Trogir archipelago where noblemen came to hunt rabbits. The Tatars left, King Bela had survived, and he bestowed gifts and privileges upon Trogir, and, in his memory, the inhabitants named the small island where he was hiding Kraljevac (‘kralj’ meaning king in Croatian).

Kamerlengo fortress

Trogir Chatedral

Kamerlengo fortress has been located in the southwestern part of old Trogir since the end of the 14th century, and its name is purely ‘bureaucratic’ because it owes it to the administrative officials of the Republic of Venice (Camerlenghi del Comun) who lived and worked in the fortifications. Today, the fortress is the location for numerous concerts, performances and similar events in the open, and in August it will host the Moondance Festival for the sixth time, with renowned global and Croatian techno DJs as headliners.

Church of St. Lawrence

Antique enthusiasts will also fall in love with the central city square and the Church of St. Lawrence, a monumental building that mixes Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, built from 1213 to 1589 – more than three centuries. At its entrance is the masterpiece of the Romanesque-Gothic sculpture – the portal of Master Radovan, the most significant Croatian medieval sculptor and architect, from 1240. The City Loggia is also here, a place from which the duke addressed the townspeople, and where legal affairs were conducted and wills were read.

There is also the beautiful Ćipiko palace, but, unfortunately, the old pharmacy from 1271, the first in Europe, is there no more. It was a place where pharmacists from Venice offered medicinal herbs and made miraculous alchemical potions.

Hotels in Trogir

If you want to experience what a night in the 19th century Trogir looked like, you can stay at Pašike Hotel on the northern side of the old town, where a peasants’ settlement used to be located. The hotel’s restaurant is a place where you will be able to taste traditional specialties such as pašticada, škartocete, popara, brujet, cod, Trogir soup, sweet rafioli made using generation-old recipes of Trogir women.

Other historic hotels include Bifora Heritage Hotel and the XII Century Heritage, ideal places to run away to from everyday life and escape to a world that has disappeared elsewhere in the world. The spirit of old Trogir can also be found in the eastern entrance to Trogir, the Pantan Mills. Returnees from America, the Pavić family restored them in 1994 in the middle of a reservoir with brackish lake, home to up to 163 species of birds and dozens of species of fish. They opened a restaurant there that evokes the ambiance of old Trogir, and the menu reflects a strong Dalmatian tradition.

The Brown Beach House Hotel on the Čiovo side of Trogir and not far from the bridge that connects the old core and the island, is one of the most popular boutique hotels in the Croatia . It is actually a renovated tobacco purchase station called Duhanka.

Trogir

The hotel is so popular that the famous magazine Condé Nast Traveler added it to its 55 best new hotels in the world list, together with the Ritz Hotel in Paris and the Whitby Hotel in New York. The style of this renovated building is a combination of rustic and modern, evoking the aesthetics of Italian resorts in the 1950s. It was designed by Saar Zafrira, a designer from Amsterdam who has worked on a number of luxury hotels all over Europe in recent years.

Hedonism in Trogir is celebrated with a spoon, so you will find a number of restaurants with modern or traditional Mediterranean cuisine. If you feel like tasting modern gastronomic wonders, Don Dino is the place for you, and if you want to eat like a true Trogir inhabitant, you should visit Tri volta, a small restaurant located near the main square where you can eat traditional Dalmatian specialties.

When to visit Trogir?

The record-breaking number of tourists that visit Trogir every year means that the town is turning into a destination not to be missed when visiting Croatia . If you want to experience pristine Mediterranean charm and the relaxed atmosphere of this city it is best to visit it before or after the tourist season.

Trogir old town croatia

In the summer, Trogir is a cosmopolitan stage for guests from all over the world, full of murmur. This is witnessed by many luxury yachts moored in three marinas surrounding Trogir, as well as those anchored there in the summer that bring the most exclusive guest to visit this Adriatic pearl. From Trogir you can easily head north and visit the Kornati and Krka national parks, or go south towards Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik.

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Trogir

This itinerary takes in the best parts of the sailing area near Trogir. In total, it comes in at 112 nM for the week, and is a great outline for your own voyage. You can easily do more or less sailing than this itinerary, and there’s lots of anchorages and bays that you’ll sail past which might warrant a stop-off for lunch or a quick swim.

Trogir - 6 day sailing itinerary

The longest day on this itinerary is over 30 nM (if you visit the blue cave at Bisevo), but most days are 13 – 18 nM, which should mean about 4-5 hours of sailing a day, with ample time for stopping en-route, to explore the start or end point, or do the shopping. On average, you can expect to be making at least 4-5 knots in a charter yacht or catamaran.

Milna

The first day is fairly straight forward as you’ll follow all the other yachts South-west away from Trogir, either beating into the prevailing wind or reasonably close-hauled. Once you’re out of the Splitski channel, you can point the bow to South-east, and the island on the nose of the boat in the distance is where you’ll be spending the night.

Milna is a great port of call for the first night - it’s a charming little town, full of historic buildings, including a bell-tower which dates from when Milna was part of the Venetian empire (this marina used to be called ‘the bay of a thousand ships’ when they used to do ship-building here), and holds a trove of paintings by Venetian masters.

Paklinski Otoki

If you have time on your side, there’s an unnamed bay on the near side of south of Hvar island which you can stop at as you sail by – unbelievably, it is not connected to any roads, and looks like a sleepy little bay, but there’s two bars there (which also serve food), and it’s an optimal place to test the anchor and have a bit to eat.

Paklinski Otoci is one of our favourite bays in the whole of the Mediterranean, and it really is a sailors paradise. Pick up a mooring buoy for the night (get there early in peak season) and the whole bay is surrounded by bars and restaurants service everything from local dishes with local beer to lobster and champagne cocktails. There’s a special atmosphere amongst all the sailors, and this is one of the few experiences you can only have if you have your own yacht – enjoy it!

Vis

From Paklinski Otoci, you’re reaching across the wind to bear South-west towards the isle of Vis. If you made a late start, you can go to Vis directly (it’s only about 10 nM). More intrepid adventurers will stick with the itinerary, as we’re headed to the ethereal blue cave of Bisevo, where a trick of the light makes the water in a cave (which you can swim in) a crazy neon blue colour. It’s a magical place to go, and thoroughly recommended.

If you decide to go to Bisevo, the cave is probably easiest seen in two groups, with someone remaining on board your yacht at all times, so that you can just mill around the area instead of having to anchor up or find somewhere to moor. Thesedays access is only via the dedicated tour boats, and you need to buy tickets on land and wait your turn.  Then head back and switch over. Don’t forget to take some photos.

From Bisevo, head North-east to follow the South side of Vis right the way back around to Vis (or stopping at Rukovac if the wind allows). Vis itself has a long and bloody history, having been inhabited since 4BC by the ancient Greeks (and there are still ruins from this time), followed by the Romans, Venetians, Ottomans, the Austrians, the French, and even the British (who have a war cemetery here). The island is also notable for being the inhabited island which is furthest from mainland Croatia, and for it’s own species of palm trees (which are rare in this part of the world).

Hvar

When you were talking to friends about coming to Croatia, Hvar might well have been one of the towns that they will have heard of – that’s because it had something of a reputation for being a hedonistic resort a few years back, but don’t worry, things have calmed down a bit since then. Hvar is now known as much for its lively nightlife as it is for being something of a foodie capital, with fine dining restaurants a plenty – some with just four or eight seats who promise a gastronomic experience.

The high point of trip to Hvar – both metaphorically and literally – is the view from Hvar castle. It’s situated a fair trek up at the top of the hill, but is well worth getting sweated up for. From here, you can find a wonderful panorama of the clear blue sea, the surrounding islands, all complemented by other holidaymakers’ yachts and catamarans.

Maslinica

Maslinica is the only port on the western side of the isle of Solta, nestled amongst pine forests and sandy beaches. Originally founded as a holiday home for a rich family, the island kept getting attacked by pirates so the owners built both a church and a castle here, to help protect them one way or another.

Nowadays, Maslinica is a tourist town, and has won awards for being the best tourist destination in the Mediterranean with less than 1,000 inhabitants. It is most famous for its honey, schnapps, and for making the tastiest wine in Croatia.

Trogir

There is only two places to get fuel in Trogir, and it gets mad busy on a Friday afternoon, so either head there early or be prepared to wait in line for an hour or so whilst you watch the organised chaos and jostle for position before filling up and heading for home.

If you haven’t had time to explore Trogir properly, then now is also a good time to do it – it has a great old town with atmospheric narrow streets and a great range of waterfront bars and restaurants. There’s also a nightclub, if you want to celebrate getting the ship back safely with some heavy beats.

Someone will be along to inspect the boat before you check-out, and then you’ll be stepping off it for one last time, hopefully with a heart full of the beautiful Croatian islands, new or renewed friendships, a smile on your face, and with a sense of tranquility that can only come from sun, sea and sailing for a week.

Sailing Conditions

Croatia Sailing - Wind Conditions

During summer, winds are traditionally between Force 3 and Force 6, and are oddly reliable - in that you can expect winds from 9am to mid-day, then there’s a short break (where local sailors say the winds go to have their lunch), before resurging in earnest from about 2-6pm.

The winds are in-part powered by the sun - the sun warms the land, so air is pulled off the sea, so the prevailing winds are towards the land, and the hotter the sun is the stronger the wind.

Sailing out of season is a bit less predictable, as there’s no such thing as a prevailing wind – they can come down from the mountains to the North, or arrive with tropical storms from the South. Rest assured that most weather systems pass within a few days.

Trogir - Average Temperature

Trogir has been a major port town for centuries – even the Romans bought ships in and out of this bay – so it is not surprising that there are numerous marinas in the area.

There are three which are principally used for holiday charters, which means that on Sunday morning and on Friday evening there can be a lot of traffic in the water, as the boats come and go. - the ACI Marina is just across the water from the UNESCO world heritage Old Town is the better established, further along the coast there is the SCT marina, and a little further still out from the town, the Baotic marina is more modern and includes a swimming pool and very elegant bar/restaurant amongst its facilities. All offer wifi and the usual in-marina facilities, and are within easy walking distance to historic old town.

If you're staying in the area before or after your charter, we can recommend these places that are close to the marina: Hotel Trogir or Domus Maritima .

ACI Marina, Trogir

The ACI Marina is just across the water from the UNESCO world heritage Old Town and is within easy walking distance to historic old town.

ACI Marina, Trogir

SCT Marina, Trogir

SCT Marina is located next door to the ACI Marina, and is very convenient for walking into Trogir Old Town.

SCT Marina, Trogir

Marina Baotic, Trogir

Marina Baotic isn't technically in Trogir (it's listed as being in Seget Donji), but it's only a short walk from Trogir, and is also connected by a water taxi.

The Marina was only built very recently, adding more capacity to the hugely-popular SCT / ACI Marinas, and has modern facilities and it's own cafe, wifi, estate agent and min-market.

Trogir

Trogir Yacht Charters

On your yacht charter in trogir, visit the historic town, a unesco heritage site, beautifully set within medieval walls.

As quaint as it is enchanting, the small village of Trogir is recognized for its characteristic Medieval walls, winding streets, and a whimsical, lively vibe; fitting, considering it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Lined with traditional bars and cafes, the town’s idyllic seaside promenade is commonly frequented by yachters in the warm summer months; still buzzing with activity, mainly by locals, during the winter. Floating aimlessly along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, the town’s surrounding area, Trogir Riviera, is an archipelago of twenty islands, some only as small as a village. A yacht charter in Trogir offers a perfect combination of sea, nature, and history.

Distinguishing itself from the pack, Trogir is unique to Central Dalmatia due to its throngs of Roman and Renaissance architecture. Just a short distance from Split, Trogir is a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of daily living; and given its impressive cathedral, a beautiful one, at that.

Trogir yacht charters

Cipiko Palace

Standing tall directly across from the village’s majestic cathedral, Cipiko Palace was home to the family for which it is named: the Cipiko family, some of the most prominent individuals of that region during the 15th century. Designed and built by Firentinac and Alesi, this structure is recognizable for is unique elements – including, but not limited to, a carved wooden statue of a cockerel stemming from a Turkish war in the 1400s, and a window designed in the Venetian Gothic style; two features atypical of that time.

Kamerlengo Fortress

Originally built during the 14th century, Kamerlengo Fortress symbolizes Trogir’s varied place in Croatian history. Known most for being the site of a Fascist-led massacre in the late 1900s, the fortress currently holds a special memorial plaque commemorating that event. Once dominated by the French, the property housing Kamerlengo Fortress is also home to a beautiful gazebo where French Marshal Marmont used to pass time by playing card games and taking in Trogir’s most beautiful, seaside views. Today, this fortress is used as both a historical site and a venue; it even hosts the Trogir Summer Festival.

Cathedral of St. Lawrence

Sitting right in the heart of the town center, on the main square, the impressive Cathedral of St. Lawrence has become one of Trogir’s most important and central landmarks. First erected between the 13th and 15th centuries by the area’s most talented builder, a man by the name of Master Radovan, its artistry and architecture are considered some of the most beautiful in all of Croatia. Most notable about this haunt is the intricacy with which the infrastructure was designed; look closely, and one will see Radovan’s detailed human figures, like Adam and Eve, and his fluctuation between the early and flamboyant gothic styles. Revolved around St. Lawrence’s three-naved, Venetian-style cathedral, the property housing the site is also home to the Chapel of St. Ivan and a cathedral tower that boasts immaculate views.

Historical Core of Trogir

Trogir is an excellent example of urban continuity. The orthogonal street plan of this island settlement originates from the Hellenic era – consecutive rulers continued to decorate it with exceptional public and residential buildings and forts. Its beautiful roman churches are supplemented with exceptional renaissance and baroque buildings. The most significant building is the Trogir Cathedral with its west portal, a masterpiece of Radovan and the most significant example of roman and gothic art in Croatia.

Trogir  has 2300 years of continuous urban tradition. Its culture was created under the influence of the ancient Greeks, and then the Romans, and Venetians. Trogir has a high concentration of palaces, churches, and towers, as well as a fortress on a small island, and in 1997 was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In the 3rd century BC Tragurion was founded by Greek colonists from the island of Vis (Issa) and it developed into a major port until the Roman period. The name comes from the Greek “tragos” (male goat). The sudden prosperity of Salona deprived Trogir of its importance. During the migration of Slavs the citizens of the destroyed Salona escaped to Trogir. From the 9th century on, Trogir paid tribute to Croatian rulers. The diocese of Trogir was established in the 11th century (abolished in 1828; it is now part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Split-Makarska) and in 1107 it was chartered by the Hungarian-Croatian king Coloman, gaining thus its autonomy as a town.

In 1123 Trogir was conquered and almost completely demolished by the Saracens. However, Trogir recovered in a short period to experience powerful economic prosperity in the 12th and the 13th centuries. In 1242 King Bela IV found refuge there as he fled the Mongols. In the 13th and the 14th centuries, members of the Šubić family were most frequently elected dukes by the citizens of Trogir. In Dalmatia, the city was known as Tragur.

After the War of Chioggia between Genova and Venice, on 14 March 1381 Chioggia concluded an alliance with Zadar and Trogir against Venice, and finally Chioggia became better protected by Venice in 1412, because Šibenik then became the seat of the main customs office and the seat of the salt consumers office with a monopoly on the salt trade in Chioggia and on the whole Adriatic Sea. In 1420 began the period of a long-term Venetian rule.

On the fall of Venice in 1797, Trogir became a part of the Habsburg Empire which ruled over the city until 1918, with the exception of French occupation from 1806 to 1814. After World War I, Trogir, together with Croatia, became a part of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs and subsequently, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. During World War II, Trogir was occupied by Italy and subsequently liberated in 1944. Since then it belonged to the second Yugoslavia, and from 1991 to Croatia.

ACI Marina Trogir

The ACI Marina Trogir is situated on the island of Čiovo, opposite the centre of the town of Trogir which has been included in UNESCO’s list of cultural heritage. From the marina one can enjoy a view of the bell-tower of the Church of St. Lawrence the entrance of which is the famous portal of master craftsman Radovan. The island of Čiovo and the town of Trogir are connected by a bridge 2.8 metres above the sea. Trogir is very well connected to the mainland’s road network, and in the immediate vicinity of the town is Split international airport (6 km).

In Trogir, just 10 minutes from Split airport, our 1 st and largest base is found. The town of Trogir is a destination worth visiting no matter if you have a yacht charter starting from here, or if you are sailing by. The town has been around for more than 2000 years, and you can really feel it in both the old stunning buildings as well as the entire city planning.

If you take a short 10-minute walk from the old town you will end up in Marina Trogir, our home. Our marina is the latest addition in the old town and is part of a renewal of the old shipyard in town. In the marina you will find our office as well as most of our fleet.

The Sailing are

Just outside of Trogir you have the central Adriatic archipelago. Plenty of world-famous destinations for sailors and well known for its variety of anything from posh to cosy options. You will not be alone in this sailing area but it’s a good reason for it as well. It is as good as it gets!

Travel to Trogir

By Airplane

Given the very close distance to Split airport, arriving with airplane is the most common solution. From the airport we will assist you with a fast and reliable transfer to our base.

Driving to Trogir is not a bad solution given the newer highway A1 that winds its way thru Croatia.  If you want a more scenic route while driving down from Europe the costal road is a great option as well, where you will be able to stop for a swim or lunch in all the small villages you will pass by.

When you have arrived in Marina Trogir there are great parking facilities for you to use which has surveillance 24/7 just a few meters from where our bouts are docked.

By Public transport

Taking a train or bus from central Europe is certainly possible as well most of the routs goes thru Zagreb and onwards to Split from where you can take a local bus or a taxi to Trogir.
