Landyachtz Switchblade Review: The Immortal Freeride Longboard

The Landyachtz Switchblade has been around for over a decade, yet it remains a highly regarded longboard for freeride and fast downhill riding, as well as for comfortable all-around transportation.

What is the Landyachtz Switchblade good at? It’s a super stable board at higher speed thanks to its large standing platform, double-drop construction, lowered platform, and affirmed concave for secure foot lock-in. Despite its high stability, the Switchblade is a responsive freeride board great for learning to slide, as well as a capable long-distance push commuter. It’s one of the most durable boards on the market.

Landyachtz Switchblade shape and construction

The Switchblade is a solid and stiff, 9-ply maple wood deck with a fully symmetrical shape and huge wheel cutouts for ample wheel clearance.

An exception to the full maple construction is the pricier “Hollowtech” version of the Switchblade built using Landyachtz’s special technology. This construction results in a hollow core deck that’s astonishingly lightweight and is transparent in the light!

The tiny tail and nose (1.825″ each, no kicks) result in a large wheelbase and effective foot platform for each Switchblade size. Here are the width and wheelbase for each version:

• Switchblade 40″: 10″ wide, 31″ wheelbase
• Switchblade 38″: 9.8″ wide, 29″ wheelbase
• Switchblade 36″: 9.5″ wide, 27″ wheelbase

The Switchblade has a drop-through constructio n with the trucks mounted across the deck’s “wingtips” – the baseplate sits above the deck while the hanger sits below it.

The deck is also dropped , meaning the standing platform sits lower than the level of the truck mounts, which makes it a “ double-drop ” deck (since it also has a drop-through mount). Unlike other dropped decks, the drop is not vertical but slanted, allowing you to tuck your feet against it.

Another key complementary aspect of the deck’s shape is the prominent W concave which creates two deep pockets between each truck mount and the middle section of the deck.

So while the standing platform is globally lower than the truck mounts, the deep pockets at each end of the platform make are even lower to the ground than the midsection, cuddling your feet in a secure lock-in.

The drop-through mount and carefully engineered foot pockets make for a significantly reduced distance to the ground and hence a very stable, comfortable, and secure ride.

Again, the main impression from riding the Switchblade is one of sheer stability and security when going fast, due to the lowered center of gravity.

The board is also surprisingly responsive and maneuverable at higher speeds given its sheer size and wheelbase – even the 40″ version. The turny and carvy Grizzly Bear trucks make the board lively. The slanted dropped shape gives you good leverage over the trucks, noticeably better than with a classic vertical drop.

Due to the large wheel cutouts, you never experience wheelbite including when doing tight carves on a bigger slope – even with the big 70mm wheels the board comes stock with (see setup section).

Sliding on the Switchblade

Breaking into slides is easy due to the lower ride and gravity center. Learning to slide on the Switchblade is greatly facilitated by the secure feel provided by the deep foot pockets and the raised rails.

The foot lock-in, the great stability, and the responsive turning all combine to give you the confidence to push the board out sideways by pressing on the uplifted edges and shifting your weight off the board while facing downhill.

The Switchblade is truly an excellent board for a beginner freerider to build his/her sliding skills on. The symmetrical shape also makes switch riding and 180º slides easier. The absence of kicks, however, prevents more sophisticated freeride tricks.

Downhill riding on the Switchblade

It’s also a capable downhill board, again thanks to its outstanding stability at high speed and its uber-secure concave. The responsiveness in turns also makes it suitable for high-speed corners. Pre-drifting is easy on this board – although you probably won’t hold as tight and clean lines as on a top mount speed board.

Commuting on the Switchblade

The Landyachtz Switchblade is suitable for distance pushing and commuting, being a stable low-riding longboard. The large wheelbase makes it comfortable for kick-pushing over long durations. The only caveat is the strong concave and foot pockets which lock your feet in specific positions, hindering your ability to adjust your position when pushing.

While the Switchblade is a good downhill carver thanks to its maneuverable and lively ride, here again, many riders feel that the deep W concave sometimes restricts the foot movement in a negative way, e.g. when pumping which requires constant foot adjustments.

Also, while the big cutouts offer high wheel clearance for doing tight carves, the very low foot pockets may sometimes scrape the ground e.g. when encountering small terrain bumps in hard turns.

Landyachtz Switchblade setup

The Switchblade comes with Bear Grizzly GR852 trucks which are extremely smooth, responsive and carvy trucks. The 852s play a key role in the Switchblade’s overall responsiveness and high maneuverability in spite of its size and weight. I’ve used the GR852 for months and really love the way they feel (see my review of the Landyachtz Chief pintail for more details).

The Switchblade in all three sizes ships with 70mm Mini Zombie Hawgs wheels (80A duro ). The Mini Zombies are good round-lipped wheels with an offset core. Despite being relatively soft for smooth rolling on all kinds of terrain, these wheels break traction easily and offer a smooth slide and predictable hook-up. They are very suitable for learning to slide and are quite durable (less prone to flat spots).

The Bear Spaceball bearings that come with the Mini Zombies have built-in spacers, which help preserve the Grizzly trucks from premature damage when learning to slide.

Even now, Switchblade is still getting a lot of attention from many riders, especially those who are looking for an all-around longboard. There’s no question when it comes to quality, Landyachtz had already proven that their products are strong and can last a long time even with constant abuse.

Landyachtz Switchblade is a super stable longboard even when riding at higher speed. It has a large standing platform that allows riders to stay steady even when they increase their speed. 

The double drop construction allows riders to tuck their feet opposite it. The Switchblade has a W concave providing a secure and steady foot lock-in. 

The Switchblade has 9-ply of 100% Canadian Maple wood making it stiff and easy to control. It also comes in two sizes the 38″ long with a 10″ width and the 40″ in length that is 10″ wide. The two sizes provide different riding experiences.

9-ply Handpicked Canadian Maple Wood

One of the strongest boards out there having a 9-ply of 100% Canadian Maple wood. Although Canadian Maple wood is pretty standard in the skating industry, 9-ply construction is not. Aside from that, Landyachtz doesn’t just use any kind of Canadian Maple wood, they thoroughly inspect it and make sure it has all the components needed to create a strong board.

It has a perfectly symmetrical shape perfect for freeride and downhill rides. This kind of shape allows riders to keep their stance even when riding regular or switch. It also has a wide wheel clearance due to its huge wheel cutouts.

Switchblade has a deep concave, allowing riders to have a better freeriding experience and explore their limits. It provides better foot lock-in while giving you more control while making it more responsive at the same time.

Drop Through Construction

The trucks on Switchblade are mounted over the board’s wingtips. It has a slanted drop that lets you tuck your feet opposite it, plus the standing platform is lower the truck mount’s level.

Gen 6 Grizzly Trucks

All of Landyachtz’s skateboards have the same quality as their decks. The Gen 6 Grizzly Trucks is a better version of Bear’s high-end Freeride and Downhill trucks. The improved Gen 6 Grizzly trucks are made stronger and have a more refined maneuvering geometry.

These trucks are highly customizable as they come in 3 baseplate angles and hangar widths. This will allow you to set up your trucks on how you wish them to perform.

70mm Mini Zombie Hawgs Wheels

The Hawg wheels have a round-lipped profile and an offset core. Switchblade has soft wheels that provide smooth rolling in almost any kind of terrain. These wheels are durable and offer smoother slides.

Bear Spaceball Bearings

The bearings on Switchblade have built-in spacers. This protects the Grizzly trucks from damage. Riders who are learning how to slide will find this very useful.

The 9-ply construction is a bit heavy for a longboard. However, they do have a more lightweight version of the Switchblade but it is more expensive.

Is the Switchblade worthy of its price? Is it really better than other longboards out there? Over the years, the brand had proven to be worthy of the attention and reputation it gained with the products it has released.

There is no doubt that Landyachtz is one of the few companies that believe in providing high-quality skateboards. Their products had undergone meticulous testings and they even try their own products before releasing them to the public. This guarantees that all are perfectly made for a specific purpose.

Their passion for finding and creating the best skateboards can be seen with their attention to detail and trying to learn everything they can about skateboards. They’ve even joined racing events just to test the limits of their products. They also have a deep understanding of the structure of a good maple tree. Every rider no matter what their size is will find the right setup for their Switchblade since it is available in two sizes. The setup is made not only for one riding style but for several functions too. You can use it for commuting, freeriding, and fast downhill riding. 

However, some may find that the price is more expensive than other longboards. But when it comes to quality, the Switchblade is still better even for its price. Also, the limited designs may not entice riders who like striking graphics. Riders who do a lot of pushing may find it hard to change foot positions due to its aggressive concave.

Verdict - Final Thoughts!

The overall setup makes your board ready for riding with little to no adjustment needed. This is such a nice buy especially for riders who are into freeriding, commuting, and downhill riding.

Perfect ride favourite brand for longboards

Excellent quality

Although the Switchblade 38 Crown Peak is my first longboard, it has made me a fan of Landyachtz. The online ordering process was effortless and shipped quickly to Taiwan, with the board well protected. The Crown Peak is well built, rides smoothly and faultless.

• On Rough Pavement

Super solid

I love this board. I’ve had it about 6 months now and I skate to/from the gym (3 miles round trip) multiple times a week. The board is super solid and I feel very stable on it. The wheels that come with board are the 69mm hawgs which are great wheels. My previous longboard that I got from Amazon has much smaller wheels and I think the larger wheels that this board has contribute to its stability. After several months of use I did decide to upgrade the wheels to 85mm orangutang wheels and I absolutely do not regret that decision. The board is absolutely unstoppable now and handles poor pavement like a champion. Highly recommend

Great board the only thing is that my sector9 board is noticeably faster which is not fun because i prefer going relatively fast downhill! Everything other than that is superb

As a close cousin to the Landyachtz Switch, you know this board must be good. The main difference between the two is the drop mounting option. The drop on this board is 1" as opposed to the 2" of the Switch. This year's model also features slight W concave, which stands for "WOW". That's what your friends will say after they see your toeside skills on this board. Go fast, and stop caring about speed, because this thing is friggin STABLE. Don't be afraid to take those sketchy roads you weren't previously able to take, your Switchblade has your back.

For your comfort , this board is extremely easy to push due to its extremely low platform, making it ideal for beginners or people who want to go really, really, really, maybe, really fast.

Whether you decide to flick out your Switchblade 38 or 40 is up to you. We'd recommend the 38 for shorter riders, but both live up to the name. A drop-through, drop down symmetrical shape makes the Switchblade incredibly stable and easy to push. As a result, it's a great commuter and a great board to learn on. Both sizes were made in Canada with 100% Canadian Maple wood, which is something, eh?

Everything you love about the Switchblade 38 but now top mounted from the factory for increased responsiveness and deeper turns. Premium construction featuring carbon stringers and fiberglass, assembled at our Kimberley, BC factory, means this board leaves nothing on the table when it comes to performance. The Fixed Blade is absolutely your board of choice whether you’re taking on big mountain roads, steep freeride spots, or just crushing your daily commute.

Complete 1 comes set-up with 70mm 78a Teal Supremes which offer a good mix of grip and slip for all-round performance.

Complete 2 comes set-up with 70mm 80a White Mini Zombie Hawgs which are ideal for freeride applications and sliding.

Complete 3 comes set-up with 70mm 78a Black Supremes which offer a good mix of grip and slip for all-around performance.

To give back to the environment we have decided that for every skateboard we sell, we plant a tree. One tree produces at least 60 boards. So with our program, one tree will turn into at least 60 new trees planted.

The Fixed Blade is a drop-down DH/Freeride shape that is designed to give you a low, comfortable platform for exploring big hills as well as getting around town as quickly as possible. You may have seen team riders like Dillon Stephens rocking top mounted Switchblades over the years on the race circuit, but now we’ve dialed it in and made it available to everyone. The top mounted design gives you ultimate control over your trucks while deep concave, matched with aggressive W concave and foot pockets at the drops, give you the reference points you need to explore the limits of your freeriding. The 8 ply maple construction, bolstered by carbon stringers and a bottom fiberglass ply, keeps the board stiff and under control. The Fixed Blade measures in at 38" long by 9.8" wide with a wheelbase of 29” and comes set up with 180mm Gen 6 Grizzly trucks and 70mm 78a Hawgs Supremes wheels for premium freeride capabilities straight out of the box.

Flex Rating

Flex has a big impact on the overall feel of your board and is influenced by a bunch of different factors. The main ones being thickness of the deck, it's wheelbase and rider weight. To put the equation in laymans terms: more flex occurs when you decrease thickness of the deck, increase the wheelbase and increase rider weight. The more flex in your board the more carvy and agile it'll feel, less flex means it's more stable and suited for faster skating. We test every complete with a device we built in house, specifically to standardize flex ratings.

Great board

The board is really nice. Upgrade the bearings and she's perfection (even without upgrading the bearings it's a great feeling board. But would high recommend better bearing.)

Don’t like the W shape.

I hate how they don’t have any other drop deck styles that aren’t W shaped. It makes my foot ache after a few hours of riding. This is my fourth board and it’s the first time I’ve had a W shaped board

Best longboard I’ve ever ridden.

I got this board a year ago today, and I have been in love with it since the day I received it in the mail. It has a “spine” in the middle of the deck to let you know where the center is. It rides as smooth as butter. The trucks are Amazing and turn with such ease. It makes it easy to carve and go down hills. It’s heavy but it is the perfect board for downhill rides as its stability is unmatched. I would definitely buy this again and I’d rate it higher if I could.

I love this board the weight really helps it move great and with the set up I got its perfect ... love the unique foot hold deck design also it looks like a mini skate park lol I can fingerboard on it .. it's just awesome 👌 totally awesome I nicknamed mine Foot Candy it's so nice

Cruiser boards are great for skating pretty much anything and that’s why Alex and Edd took their dinghies out for a skate & explore mission to a riverfront they’ve never been before.
