Boat Story: Is the Thriller Show Inspired By Real Life?

Nathan Patra of Boat Story: Is the Thriller Show Inspired By Real Life?

Premiered in 2023, BBC’s ‘Boat Story’ is a thriller miniseries that follows a duo of broke strangers who are united by fate and unforeseen circumstances. It centers upon Janet and Samuel, who stumble upon something incredible — a treasure trove of packed cocaine worth millions. Thinking this could be a way to get them out of their penniless days, the duo agrees to sell it and equally split the money. However, things turn south as they encounter several interested parties and become entangled in the suspicions of some of the most dangerous criminals and the police.

Created by Harry and Jack Williams, the narrative is packed with tropes from the dark comedy genre; however, the miniseries is a through-and-through thriller. It is additionally assisted by comedic and drama elements, applying a more diverse theme to its surroundings. Due to its well-crafted plot and illustrations of incidents, many will wonder if the story is inspired by real-life happenings.

Boat Story is Loosely Based on True Events

Sibling duo and showrunners Harry and Jack Williams, known for their craftsmanship in shows such as ‘The Missing’ and ‘Baptiste,’ brought to life an over-the-top experience in ‘Boat Story,’ that’s only partially inspired by real-life events. In an interview with the BBC , Harry Williams explained, “The idea for ‘Boat Story’ came from having seen articles about similar things involving large amounts of drugs washing up on shores somewhere.” He further revealed that the series is an exception, as most of the shows they’ve developed had begun with just “a series of conversations” among themselves.

The show illustrates their actions and reactions to real-life inspired fictional events, or as Harry Williams revealed, “This one, was what would we do if we had stumbled across a boatload of washed-up drugs? We probably wouldn’t do what the characters did, which is try and sell them, but that would make for a less interesting series. Instead, we imagined what would happen should we have done such a thing.” The other half of the duo, Jack Williams, reiterated in the same interview that the development process between the brothers has always begun with a “what would you do if…” that blossoms into a plot constructed piece by piece.

Jack explained that, in most cases, they make their way out from a place of relatability. However, this particular show did not come from a familiar backdrop. He goes on to clarify that most people aren’t like the lead characters of the show. Most people wouldn’t do what they did. The sibling duo described ‘Boat Story’ as a “contemporary morality tale,” wanting to approach the show through the freshest route possible and seek a challenge while doing so. While following the route of originality, the creators focused on producing the show with the intention of concentrating on the narratives themselves and why they are being told.

Jack further remarked, “What we landed upon, was to make it a show about stories themselves, and why people tell stories and why people watch and enjoy them. There’s a meta layer to the whole show as well.” So it isn’t really so much the way it is made, but the way these stories are told. It introduces the lead characters, Janet and Samuel, who aren’t going through their greatest financial phases. Individually, their underwhelming lives leave much to be desired. The two are on the brink of desperation.

As fate would have it, they unexpectedly meet and stumble upon a conspicuous boat washed up on the beach. Within it lies bundles of cocaine worth millions. As an average citizen, one wouldn’t necessarily investigate further; it is likely they would leave it be or inform the authorities. It is quite well-known that where there are copious amounts of drugs, there’s always bound to be trouble. Janet and Samuel aren’t quite the regular sort in this case. They are fueled by desperation and its following traits, making them ideal candidates to probe the matter further.

Moral complexities apart, the show dives deep into the minds of people who seek more from their lives and those who are at the edge of despair. The boat, in this case, is a measure of escape from the mediocre and hard-up. The allure of the riches they could attain after selling the contents of the vessel, in the minds of Janet and Samuel, is far more potent than the drugs and their consequences. In the end, each individual’s mindset shines the brightest, with the lead characters driving the show with ample amounts of hopeless willingness.

While speaking about the writing process for a unique show such as this one, Jack Williams mentioned that a crucial part of the proceedings was keeping it “robust.” A clear indication of the intricacies they have pursued in the show, adding masterfully intertwined elements of humor, thrills, and drama. While at the crux of it, ‘Boat Story’ is loosely inspired by the real-life incidents of drugs washing ashore, it is actually an exploration of human reaction driven by desperation, which, in turn, is deeply rooted in reality.

Cool Cruiser

I wanted to see if anyone else has had some stories. I'll get the ball rolling.

I was the best man for my friend's wedding, and my wife and I went on their honeymoon cruise on the Freedom of the Seas with them in May 2013. After dinner we head back to our rooms and discover our luggage has been delivered. We head to my friend's room, and they have the bride's suitcase(s), but are missing his. We ask the steward who says they are holding one "downstairs". He doesn't know what that means, and I tell him it's because they found something in his suitcase. I walk down the hallway with him towards the elevators, the entire time he's wondering aloud about what they could possibly have held the bag for. I question him about razor (electric), booze (doesn't drink), outlet plug (nope).

We get down to the dreaded "naughty room" and give his name and cabin number. They pull the bag and ask if it's ok to search. He say's to go ahead, he didn't bring anything bad. After about 30 seconds the nice rubber glove wearing gentleman pulls out a pair of purple fuzzy handcuffs...yeah.

I burst out in laughter, as he explains they aren't real cuffs, and they have a safety latch on them. "Sorry Sir, not allowed." He relents to them holding the cuffs until after the vacation when he can pick them up on leaving. He declines and tells them to toss them.

On the way back up to the room with bag in hand, he tries passing the blame on the maid of honor. "She gave them to her a gag gift." he explains. Oh really? Then why did you feel the neeed to bring them. He hasn't lived it down yet. haha.

Haha, I figured there's enough threads debating the whole sneaking culture being acceptable or not. I want some laughter induced stomach pains!

Gives new meaning to the term "whiskey tit"!

We were there a couple days ago after my son packed a multi-tool with a small knife. Most of the things we saw were typical, but we were very impressed with whoever tried to smuggle a large blender still in the box.

I've never been to the Naughty room, but after getting off Jewel in SJ last spring I saw the table where people could pick up confiscated stuff and did see a waffle iron.

Lisacruzzes

Five years ago, my mother - 70 years old at the time, is called down to the "naughty" room and she knew exactly the reason!! The employee asks if it is OK to search her suitcase, she says yes, that's fine. He proceeds to pull out a 20 oz. water bottle the water color being brown (sounds disgusting, but wait for it...), and the cap is wrapped in plastic with a rubber band securing it. He's looking at this suspiciously and she says, oh, that's my "SPECIAL" water. He then shrugged his shoulders and said "OK", and put it back in her suitcase.

So what was the liquid in the bottle! Homemade mud slides and she continues to smuggle them in every cruise, but with rum runners now.

Great Review

Cruisehappymn

LOL!! I might understand a blender but a waffle iron? That is crazy.

ksuds

When we were relatively new to cruising, we smuggled some booze on in our luggage (different cruise line). We were called out so they can go through our luggage. As the gentlman proceeded, he was nearing the side pocket that our booze was in. Before unzipping it, he asked what was in the side pocket. We quickly replied........sex toys. He was startled, and never went any further into the bad. Our booze made it!!
If my questionable memory is correct, I think it was in the box. Perhaps someone who has as shopping problem saw an incredible deal on waffle irons that was too good to pass up?

Cruise_Anne

Cruise_Anne

Decided on our second cruise to be "pirates" and smuggle in some rum. I got the dreaded letter saying I needed to report to the "ROOM".

My luggage was marked with bright yellow tape marked 'KNIFE' - which had even me wondering what was going on.

Turns out my hair curler provided the misinformation, and once I showed them that's all it was, they let me go...the smuggled rum still in tact in the bottom of the SAME BAG.

I considered that my official warning, and have given up my pirate ways in favor of the drink package!:D

Anytime somebody asks me what something is I will now reply "Sex Toys" and see if it gets them to back off. Heh.

Probably at least a couple of months since I've heard the fuzzy handcuffs story.

Must have been a good sale at the Duty free shop.

That's some funny stuff right there! Good thinking!

Is it really that common? We bring it up all the time with my friend. On a related note I imagine working the xray scammer during a"lifestyle" cruise has got to be an experience...

My naughty room story is to naughty to tell. 😉

Thankful there was nothing in my mouth or it would have been a flying object! :D

Gotta love the creative with a blender and waffle iron. Personally, I would not want to be trying to get that on the airplane!

I've been to the naughty room but my trip is a boring small travel iron!

Had my RR packed in one suitcase and the other suitcase had my snacks, the RR made it fine but my can of nuts got flagged.

GUT2407

Maybe they were taking it to someone, I have a friend [yes I do so have a friend] who often takes things to someone living in Vanuatu.

Or they hoped that because it was still in the box the line would see that it was less of a risk.:rolleyes:

I bought my vitamix blender in the US as its about $700 cheaper to do so. I didn't take it on a cruise but I did fly home with it, in its box, in my suitcase.

I'm overweight and not that good looking.

So any naughty room story doesn't involve my Wife or a woman.

Especially while growing up. anything naughty in a cruise cabin or a hotel room would've taken place between me and myself.

Maybe in the next life I'll lay off the cheeseburgers and things will be different but for now, extra mayo it is.

long ago i use to bring my small coffee maker but quit when they started getting more stringent on what you can and can not bring.

i did get called out on a travel iron and our last cruise was a case of bottled water - it was still in plastic and no open caps. I was suppose to carry but it was to heavy and bulky so i asked if someone would bring it up and they complied.

9 superyacht crew members share what it's really like working for a billionaire on board

  • Superyachts are luxurious, but working on them isn't.
  • Insider polled superyacht crew members to find out what it's really like working for a billionaire on board.
  • They said their days are spent fulfilling requests and keeping the yacht in top shape — but it really all depends on the superyacht owner.

Insider Today

While working on a superyacht sounds glamorous, in reality it can be anything but.

Insider polled superyacht crew members to get an inside look at life on board. When asked what working for a millionaire or billionaire is really like, they agreed on a few things, like long hours.

Many superyacht  crew members wake up before dawn to start their day, which typically involves a lot of cleaning and catering to the requests of owners and guests.

But while some superyacht owners are demanding, others are less so — it really all depends on their personality. Some crew members said that owners and guests are more like regular people than you'd expect.

Here's what life on board looks like, according to nine superyacht crew members.

Note: Insider was able to verify each crew member's identity, but we refrained from publishing their full names to protect their privacy.

Working on a yacht can be lucrative.

Insider previously reported that deckhands earn an average of $3,083 to $3,574 a month, depending on the boat size. Captains reportedly get paid even more — they earn $7,750 to $19,961 a month on average.

Kate Lardy of the Sun Sentinel reported that a captain in Fort Lauderdale once spent a total of $14,255 on day workers, who are hired temporarily for onboard services, during a two-month period.

But it's also tiring and demanding.

yacht stories reddit

One captain who works on a 120-foot boat alluded to tiring conditions. Working for a billionaire is "demanding," he said, with hours that begin very early — before 6 a.m. — and end very late.

Yacht crew members have to meet high expectations.

yacht stories reddit

One electronic technical officer who works on a 223-foot yacht stressed the pressure of delivering top-notch service while remaining level-headed.

Working on a yacht involves "very, very long days with little rest and expectations to perform at the highest levels of service while not losing your cool under pressure," he said.

They have to work hard to keep yachts spotless.

yacht stories reddit

Guests and owners can be messy and dirty — and it's up to the crew to make sure it doesn't look that way. A mate on a 92-foot yacht said he had to wake up before guests or other crew members to get the yacht's exterior ready for the day.

"They expect it to look like no one has touched it," he said. "So any rain or dew, water spots, bird crap, or salt spray has to be continuously cleaned, not to mention having to constantly wipe stainless [steel] and glass when guests move around the boat. They leave smudges and fingerprints everywhere.

"By the time I start at the top of the boat and move around drying the boat, washing windows, and prepping water toys, depending on where the guests are, it's time to clean behind them."

He said he then has to be available for whatever the day brings, whether guests want to take the tender out or play with water toys, the interior crew needs help with service, or any maintenance issues need to be addressed.

There's a lot of cleaning, smiling, and snacking.

yacht stories reddit

Nic, a chief stewardess, shared her typical daily itinerary, which extends from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., with a one-hour break for a power nap.

There's constant snacking, as she doesn't always have time to sit and eat, she said. She's also "always thinking and planning ahead for the next meal or excursion," like what guests "need to take with them and what they need upon return," she said.

"Always thinking of ways to make the day special and 'perfect' (as much as possible)," she said.

She added: "Cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, and lots of smiling. Behind the scenes, a lot of running around and working at high speed, throwing stuff into drawers and sorting it out later when you have time, laughing, and keeping crew spirits high. Never-ending laundry."

Work is easier when the owners are away, which is often.

yacht stories reddit

Billionaire owners actually don't spend a lot of time on their multimillion-dollar yachts. Neither do the guests who charter them.

"Owners or guests are typically not on the boat all that much, so most of the time the crew has the boat to themselves," said Michael, a former yacht captain who worked on yachts ranging from 130 to 170 feet.

"Work is pretty easy and consists of general maintenance and keeping the boat in perfect/ready state for when the owner does show up. If you have a good crew it can be very enjoyable. If you do not, it can be very stressful and miserable."

Everything depends on the owner's personality.

yacht stories reddit

Some crew members get lucky working for generous yacht owners, while others get treated like the help.

"It's hard work and long days when they are on board," said Martin, the captain of a 155-foot yacht. "It really depends on the owner. Some have treated me like family, and some have treated me like a servant."

But sometimes it's not the owner who's difficult.

yacht stories reddit

A chef on a 150-foot motor yacht also said that working for a billionaire could be unpredictable, as every boat and owner is different.

But it's not the owner of the yacht who's always difficult to work for.

"Bear in mind that the captain is every bit as much your boss as the owner is, and sometimes the captain is a bigger pain in the ass than the billionaire owner," she said.

Yacht owners are just your everyday people on vacation — with more money.

yacht stories reddit

According to Mark, the captain of a 114-foot yacht, billionaire owners are just like normal vacationers. Kind of.

"They're just people holidaying, but with more money and toys to fill their days," he said.

They can be more down-to-earth than expected, but their spontaneity can be frustrating.

yacht stories reddit

"It's really nice to find out that some of the wealthiest people you'll work for are actually more down-to-earth and normal like any person you'd meet on the street," a stewardess on a 112-foot sailing yacht said. "The saying is 'money screams, wealth whispers.'"

She added: "A typical day involves turning heads, beds, and laundry for guests and crew, which can be a lot if you're a department of one. Food and beverage service three times a day. A lot of plans and schedules change on the fly depending on the owners and their wants and whims, which can be a bit frustrating."

Watch boat story: synopsis.

Much like other sibling writing partnership The Coen’s, Harry and Jack Williams have become adept at penning spiralling and propulsive crime capers. After a bag of cocaine washes ashore in their small, quiet coastal town, Janet (Daisy Haggard, Back to Life ) and Samuel (Paterson Joseph, Noughts + Crosses ) hatch a plan to sell the drugs and take the much needed money. But things soon start to unravel as hitmen, gangsters and the police all descend upon them. Based on the Williams’ previous work, we can expect an escalation of violence, double crosses and deadly consequences for all involved.

Also in the cast are Tchéky Karyo ( Baptiste ) as enigmatic gangster The Tailor and gangster drama stalwart Craig Fairbrass ( Rise of the Footsoldier ) as his hard-as-nails henchman, Guy. Alongside them, expect to see House of the Dragon ’s Phil Daniels and The Larkins ’ Joanna Scanlan.

FUNNY Boating Stories (not really stupid, just funny) Let's hear yours!

Like the thread title says, post something here that happened to you that was not really stupid, but was funny. You know, you were operating your craft in a reasonable, safe manner, and something happened that - after it happened, at least - was funny. Here's mine: I was in my 20's and was on vacation in early August with my family at a lake that we frequented on vacation. We were coming in in my dad's 16' runabout after an afternoon of fishing. The boat was a closed bow number with a walk-through windshield allowing you to use the bow as a walk-way. The boat also had a cleat near the middle of the bow deck for tieing off. I'm piloting the boat, and my dad gets up on the bow and sits down, intending to jump off the bow onto the dock to get our tow vehicle, while I backed away after he made the transition from boat to dock. I'm idling in expertly, right on target for him to safely jump up onto the dock. When I get about 10' from the dock, out of the blue my dad suddenly turns to me and starts saying, "back-up! back-up!" I look at him and say, "why, what's the matter?" We're clear to get to the dock. I see no problems as we are headed in. He says, VERY animatedly, "Just back up!" He has somewhat of a panicked look on his face; my interpretation of it at the time was that I must be doing something VERY wrong in my navigational efforts to safely get us to the dock. I'm thinking, "what in the world is the matter?" A guy on the dock notices the commotion and starts saying to my dad, "hey everything's alright, I got you", while holding out his hand in offer of support. My dad says to me, "JUST BACK UP!!" So, in frustration, I ram the thing in reverse and back away. Once we get a few yards from the dock, my dad turns around towards me with a pained expression on his face, and reaches for his groin. "&%^*", he says, "I caught my scrotum on the cleat! It feels like I should be bleeding!" I TOTALLY fall off my seat laughing. TG

Re: FUNNY Boating Stories (not really stupid, just funny) Let's hear yours! Go figure old thread again. Yup that would suck. And I know what you mean about operating somebody elses belongings or equipment in your case it was your father's boat, in my case it was my father's tractor with a front end loader. I know how to drive the darn tractor dad, and I can't lower the loader down anymore or else I'll end up crushing you, he gets agrevated when I operate the thing at a safe speed or in the direction of my own, one time "I just said you do it" "I'm done" and walked off.

Re: FUNNY Boating Stories (not really stupid, just funny) Let's hear yours! Not strictly a boating story but related: My grandfather lived on a beautiful saltwater pond in New England. We spent all of our summers there no matter where we were living at the time. That meant, of course, that all the family pets came too. One summer we had a new cat that was essentailly full grown by the summer. Grand-dad's dock extended out into the water about 100 feet and had an L-shaped end with bench seat on it. I was sitting on it watching a seagull that had landed on a post a few feet away, waiting to see if I was going to come up with any of the remains that we often fed them after cleaning fish. The cat, which was at the head of the dock, began a stalking approach towards the bird as I watched. As it got closer, the bird began to eyeball it with a semi-interested look. Soon enough, our cat was within striking range and bolted into a full fledged run and flying leap at the seagull. With a couple of flaps of its wings, the gull basically elevated in place while the cat sailed underneath it straight into the pond, and then landed right back were it had been all the time. I think I damn near fell into the pond myself, laughing at this. The bird just sat there looking at the cat in the water and the cat kept giving out the most miserable meows you have ever heard. BTW, cats are actually excellent swimmers and it made it back to shore just fine.

Re: FUNNY Boating Stories (not really stupid, just funny) Let's hear yours! LOL jay_merrill, I could visualize that seen. That would of been a good one to send to America's funniest videos. Poor kitty kitty lol.

Re: FUNNY Boating Stories (not really stupid, just funny) Let's hear yours! That is good jay. You really should keep a video cam on that cat... that would have definately been the 10,000 dollar winner right there.

Re: FUNNY Boating Stories (not really stupid, just funny) Let's hear yours! True, but it happened in about 1965 so I'm out of luck on that one. If only I could replay the very vivid memory of it that I have in my mind! It was just one of those things that stay with you forever.

Re: FUNNY Boating Stories (not really stupid, just funny) Let's hear yours! Not too worry. I'd say most of us have done that one time or another. My usual mental lapse is to forget to unhook the winch strap after I remove the safety line that I use on the bow to back up the winch strap. There are a bunch of old timers who hang out most every day at my local boat launch, critiqueing everything that everyone does. Boy, do I feel dumb as they chuckle at me trying to figure out why the boat won't launch before it hits me what I have done!

Re: FUNNY Boating Stories (not really stupid, just funny) Let's hear yours! Was on a dive charter once when one of the other divers was gearing up. He had all the gear on and was ready to go over the side, expect for his 'tail-flap'. He leaned against the railing on the side of the boat, pulled his tail-flap up and rolled over.... To his surprise, and everybody else's amusement, he was now suspended 3 feet above the water, just hanging there. He'd pulled his tail-flap over the hand rail. We all ROFLMAO.... Chris.........

Re: FUNNY Boating Stories (not really stupid, just funny) Let's hear yours! Oddest thing thing saw was while out fishing10 miles out in the middle of Lake Erie. Very calm and hot day. Not a ripple on the water. There were many boats out trolling with their downriggers and planer boards. You had to constantly watch your course so you didn't get crossed up. I go past one boat and there kid in the water behind the boat with a life jacket. He is tied to the boat by a rope and being dragged along as the boats trolls for walleye. I thought my self trolling for sharks if he wasn't in a fresh water lake.

Re: FUNNY Boating Stories (not really stupid, just funny) Let's hear yours! Growing up, my parents had a weekend lakehouse we frequented during the summer. I invited a friend to come up one weekend who had just moved to Texas from MA. He had never been in a boat, swam at a lake, or even knew the concept of a water ski. He warmed up to it fast and soon wanted to try out the "zip sled" - a long blue plastic device one laid on while the boat towed you. It had a subtle upturned nose that dictated the top from the bottom though. Dad chucked it into the water and my friend clamored on top of it to get ready. No one thought to check for it being the right side up. He was hanging onto the handle and nervously said "go!". Dad hits the gas on our old Sea Sprite and we take off. Within seconds the boat is straining and slowing and it was then I noticed the rope leading to the zip sled is angled towards the bottom of the lake. When he took off, the sled bit into the water and went straight under taking my friend with it. After a second the rope started moving upward and soon the sled appeared back on the surface with a gasping and sputtering kid trying to catch his breath. My dad was roaring with laughter but my friend did NOT think it was funny and later confessed he suspected he was a victim of some sort of Texas hazing deal. He was content to just ride in the boat after that.

Re: FUNNY Boating Stories (not really stupid, just funny) Let's hear yours! Back in 1986 I bought a brand new Smokercraft "Big Fisherman". It might have been the second or third time I had it in the water. Well anyway, I'm out on the Pecatonica River (anybody know where that river is) fishing away and get caught in a real heavy downpour. Of course the boat has no bilge pump, so after several minutes I am about ankle deep in water. So I have the brilliant idea of planing the boat out and pulling the plug to let the water drain out. Good idea I thought at the time. So I get the boat planed out and pull the plug and the water is running out just fine. Well I had laid the plug on the bench beside me and lo and behold it rolled off the bench and into the water in the bottom of the boat and I can't find it. I am cruising down the river wide open when suddenly I come to a 90 degree bend in the river and I have to slow down, so you know what happens then, the water comes gushing back into the boat. I get around the bend and try to open her up again, by this time the boat has so much water in it the motor just kind of lugs along. I finally get back to the boat landing with the boat full of water, what a sight. So anyway I get my boat trailer backed into the water and start cranking the boat onto the trailer, man is it heavy with all that water in it. I get cranked about half way on to trailer and all of a sudden SNAP, the rope breaks and the boat starts sliding off the trailer back into the river. Oh no I am going to lose my brand new boat, I am thinking, when all of a sudden two guys show up and save the day and help me get the boat out of the water. One of the guys asks me what happened and I tell him and of course they start rolling on the ground laughing. It really was funny. Needless to say the next day I go out and buy a bilge pump.

Who is Ajay Thakore? San Diego Lamborghini Yacht owner threatens dock worker in viral video

A n Indian-origin California business owner Ajay Thakore recently made headlines when he reportedly threatened a dockyard worker at San Diego's Marriott Marina after the latter refused to let the former park his $4.5 million Lamborghini Yacht, as per Times Now News.

The video of the incident has now gone viral online. While the face of the man threatening the dock employee saying "I will kill you!" multiple times remains unclear in the footage, many media outlets, including the New York Post confirmed it was Ajay Thakore, who has previously been part of similar confrontations.

Apart from threatening to kill the dock worker, the man in the video also flashed at the latter, as the yacht moved away from the marina. In the wake of this incident, here's looking at who Ajay Thakore is.

Ajay Thakore also goes by the name Ace Rogers

According to Daily Mail, Ajay Thakore also goes by the name Ace Rogers and he is a wealthy businessman and philanthropist based in San Diego, California. He is the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, a local medical marketing agency, and Gopher Media LLC.

He has previously faced similar controversy in 2021 when he was accused of harassing the employees of a La Jolla pizza joint called American Pizza Manufacturing. Its founder Andrew Melone alleged back then that it all started with Thakore defaming the take-and-bake pizza establishment on social media.

However, things escalated when the Indian-origin business owner reportedly parked two of his cars directly in front of the eatery, blocking its entrance, with texts, "Take N Bake Pizza Sucks" glaring on top of it.

Melone also claimed that an airplane flew over the locality with the banner reading, "Just Say No to Take N Bake Pizza." Not only that but Ajay Thakore reportedly involved another pizzeria in the area Carino's, with planes displaying messages like "Carino's Pizza is Better than Take N Bake."

Additionally, Thakore and his companies filed a $10 million lawsuit against Andrew Melone and his public accusations, claiming that they were "exercising their First Amendment Rights" and protesting against discrimination. The owner of the pizzeria countersued, alleging Thakore had persistently harassed him and his company. The two civil lawsuits are still underway.

Exploring the recent controversy surrounding Ajay Thakore

On the afternoon of March 10, 2024, Ajay Thakore's multimillion-dollar Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht was not allowed to park in the Seaforth Boat Rental lot in San Diego's Marriott Marina. He was reportedly there to pick up an employee. The video of the incident has now gone viral.

It shows a man standing on the edge of the yacht threatening to "kill" the worker identified as Joseph Holt, as per CBS 8. Later, as the boat moved away from the dock, the former dropped his pants and made inappropriate gestures toward the 21-year-old employee. The harasser even threw $100 bills at the guy which fell into the water.

Holt told reporters that he "respectfully" told the driver not to park in the private space and was hoping to have a "conversation" with him about his "cool boat," when "it completely went the other way."

"I really didn't know how to process it. I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt stated.

The employee also mentioned how Thakore berated him for his minimum wage labor and called him a nobody who did nothing on a "silly job." The expensive boat owner allegedly threatened to have him fired using his "connections" and ruin his life.

The dock worker further continued,

"He had dropped his pants and started to make gestures to everybody watching and me. You can't act that way in public. It's just not okay. Especially threatening my life, at the very least. There were women and children there. That's the most important part."

In contrast, Ajay Thakore's public relations team told CBS 8 that the "interaction" was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement added.

Later, Ajay Thakore's employee Jason, whom the former was supposed to pick up during the fiasco, also issued a clarification via his boss' Instagram (@acerogersceo). He said that he was not allowed to get aboard, and was asked to "stand back" and even "forearmed" which is when Thakore allegedly "flipped" as he was protective of him, his fiancé, and his other employees, tagging it as a long-drawn misunderstanding.

In the caption of the post, it was Ajay Thakore who seemed to issue a statement:

"As a leader, I defend my own fiercely with everything I have, and I will never apologize for that. You can choose to believe that I just pulled up to the dock and started yelling, or you can realize that a lot happened before the cameras were rolling and that it takes two sides to escalate a situation."

Notably, in the aftermath of the incident, Port of San Diego Harbor Police were called in, who arrived 10 minutes after Ajay Thakore's boat left the marina. Joseph Holt told the news outlet that the officers didn't take his complaints seriously and were even laughing at him.

The department responded by telling CBS 8 that they were called in to deal with a "possible intoxicated vessel operator" who had departed the area before they got there and that they were unable to do anything with. The statement went on to say that a report had been made and that the police had spoken with the complainant and witnesses.

The spookiest ghost ship stories from around the world

To get you in the mood for Halloween 2021, BOAT rounds up the best spooky stories of haunted ghost ships through the years, from the disappearing crew of Carroll A. Deering to the mystery of Mary Celeste ...

Although the earth's warming temperatures mean that the Northwest Passage  is now free (albeit not easy) to sail through, this was not always the case. The search for the elusive passage claimed the lives of many ambitious sailors in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; keen to find an alternate trade route to Asia, their ships would become lodged in Arctic ice, sealing their fate in the Great White North. The Octavius was one of many to meet such a fate, but the grim scenes found on board was what made the story of this ghost ship particularly terrifying.

The three-masted schooner departed from England in 1761, but was found off the coast of Greenland in 1775. Her captain had, unluckily decided to try and use the then nonexistent Northwest Passage (which superyacht  Rosehearty has since cleared) to return home. The five men who boarded the derelict ship in 1775 were confronted with a ghostly sight; the entire 28-man crew was below deck, but frozen to death. The icy figure of the ship's captain was discovered sitting at his desk, writing in his logbook, pen still in hand. The last logbook entry was in 1762 - the ghost ship and her crew had been lost at sea for 13 years before being found.

SS Ourang Medan

One of the most notorious ghost ship stories, the tale of the SS Ourang Medan is shrouded in mystery. The legend goes that in 1947 a cargo ship off the coast of Indonesia put out a distress call with the words: “All officers including captain are dead lying in chartroom and bridge. Possibly whole crew dead.” Before help could arrive, a second message was radioed in with just two words: “I die.”

Rescue workers who boarded the ship discovered to their horror that the crew members were indeed deceased with their bodies contorted and arms outstretched as if fending off an attacker, but without any signs of injury. An engine room fire then caused the ship to be abandoned and eventually sink, taking its ghastly secret, and any chance of an autopsy investigation, to Davy Jones’ locker.

Later reports contradicted this supernatural tale, however, with a 1948 newspaper article citing a survivor who blamed the deaths on a leak of its deadly cargo — sulphuric acid. What’s more, there is no record of the SS Orang Medan in Lloyd’s Registry, leading some to conclude that this ghost story is pure fabrication.

Mary Celeste

No ghost ship compendium would be complete without the tale of the brigantine Mary Celeste . Her fate has passed into maritime myth thanks in large part to a short story by Dr Arthur Conan Doyle, the writer and creator of Sherlock Holmes . What we do know is that the Mary Celeste had sailed from New York on November 7, 1872 bound for Genoa with a cargo of alcohol. Almost a month later on the afternoon of December 5, she was spotted drifting somewhere between the Azores and Portugal by Dei Gratia , another brigantine on an Atlantic crossing.

Captain Morehouse of the Dei Gratia knew Captain Briggs of the Mary Celeste to be a capable sailor and was suspicious. He ordered a boarding party to the Mary Celeste and his crew found a deserted ship in seaworthy condition. Captain Morehouse split his crew and sailed the Mary Celeste to Gibraltar. To this date, the fate of Captain Briggs, his wife, child and crew of seven remains unsolved. Whether Briggs abandoned ship because of bad weather or whether there is a more sinister reason for their disappearance, will never be known.

This more recent tale concerns the catamaran Kaz II , which was found deserted off the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The 9.75 metre yacht was seen drifting by a helicopter on April 18, 2007 a few days after she had set off from Airlie Beach, Queensland. When she was boarded on April 20 the maritime authorities found everything normal but no crew. Food was on the table, a laptop was on and the engine was running. The only indication of something out of the ordinary was a ripped sail.

Conspiracy theories as to the fate of the three men, inexperienced sailors in their 50s and 60s, abounded, ranging from pirates, insurance fraud and even paranormal activity. A coroner’s court found something far more prosaic – that the three friends had drowned after falling overboard as a result of their lack of nautical nous, though one cannot say for certain as their bodies have never been found.

The body of German sailor Manfred Fritz Bajorat was found slumped over the desk of his yacht Sajo in early 2016. The grim discovery was made by fishermen when they boarded the drifting yacht off Barabo in Surigeo del Sur province. After a post-mortem was carried out, local police said there were no signs of foul play and it was believed Bajorat died of natural causes, possibly a heart attack. It is thought his yacht had been adrift for many months before it was discovered and the dry, salty conditions on board had caused his body to mummify.

The Flying Dutchman

The most iconic ghost ship in maritime culture is certainly The Flying Dutchman . The legend tells that this haunted ship is unable to make port and is cursed to sail the seas forevermore. The fable of this Dutch man-of-war ship first appeared in the seventeenth century. The supposed captain of the ghost ship was apparently inspired by stories of Barend Fokke, whose exceptionally fast trips from the Netherlands to Java were presumed to be aided by the devil.

Sightings of the phantom ship, which apparently occur in bad weather, are supposed to be bad omens for those who pass her. The most famous report of The Flying Dutchman was by King George V, who apparently saw her all aglow along the coast of Australia as they were sailing in the Bass straight. The ship has become a famous trope in literature, art and movies since; she inspired Richard Wagner's opera of the same name, and more recently made an appearance in the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest .

Carroll A Deering

The fate of the crew of five-masted schooner Carroll A Deering , which ran aground off North Carolina in January 1921, was investigated by no less than five US government departments. In the process, it became one of the most infamous maritime mysteries of all time. The ship was returning to Norfolk, Virginia after delivering a consignment of coal to Rio de Janeiro. The captain, W B Wormwell, had been drafted in on the first leg of the journey due to the illness of the original captain and was said to have an uneasy relationship with the crew. Thus, mutiny was suspected as the most likely reason when the Carroll A Deering was found deserted after being boarded by rescuers on February 4, 1921. The ship’s navigation equipment and lifeboats had gone but, to add the mystery, food had been prepared for the next meal.

Japanese ghost ships

The Japanese Coast Guard has reported around 200 instances of ghost ships over the last few years. However, unlike the Bermuda Triangle, the boats have been found, and with human cargo on board. One such recent incident happened off Fukui, a port city on the main Honshu island. The decomposing corpses of seven people were found on a drifting wooden fishing vessel in mid-December last year. The Japanese authorities are said to be puzzled by the fate of the ‘fishermen’ but one theory for this and the other floating ghost ships is they were defectors from the totalitarian North Korean regime across the treacherous sea to the west.

Auspiciously timed, this ghost ship was last seen leaving a port in Tawain on Halloween, 2002. The 20-metre boat was then found abandoned in the Timor Sea, within an 80 nautical mile range of Australia's Rowley Shoals. The fishing boat's owner had last been in touch with the captain in December of that year, but by January 2003, High Aim 6 was discovered unmanned. Strangely, the vessel was found with its engines fully fuelled and running, with all of the crew's personal belongings and provisions on board. There were also no apparent signs of struggle or damage above or below deck. The mystery remains unsolved; the only information the authorities received was from a single crew member they had managed to track down and take into custody. He claimed that the crew of High Aim 6 had mutinied, but no reason was given as to why.

HMS Resolute

HMS Resolute was a British Royal Navy ship found in 1854, abandoned and adrift, off the coast of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic . She had originally been sent to find the remains of another lost expedition, that of Sir John Franklin's to locate the then frozen Northwest Passage, but met a similar fate. HMS Resolute had become lodged in an ice floe and abandoned by the crew, of whom no trace was ever found.

An eerie scene met those who had discovered the ghostly ship in 1855; the captain's cabin remained undisturbed with a teapot, bible and glasses full of liquor on the desk. A British Flag had been left draped over the chair of the ships's commander, Captain Kellett. HMS Resolute was eventually retrieved and retired in 1879. Her timbers were used to construct the Resolute desk, which has been used by almost every American president in the Oval Office since the 19th century.

Celebrities Accused Of 'Yachting' In Hollywood — And What Being A 'Yacht Girl' Really Means

Rumors suggest some women are paid to play..

woman on a man's shoulders partying

It’s easy to be envious when seeing the Instagram photos of young, carefree celebrity women seemingly having the time of their lives on yachts floating in exotic waters and in the VIP sections of the most exclusive clubs.

However, rumor has it there is much more than meets the eye when it comes to these ‘yacht girls’ and their extravagant lifestyles.

What is a yacht girl?

According to Urban Dictionary , a yacht girl is “an attractive young woman who finds ways to get access to luxurious surroundings by being available to wealthy men.”

For example, you may follow a woman or two on Instagram who always seems to be partying or vacationing somewhere expensive (notably without ever showing who she’s actually with). This is a person you could potentially describe as being a yacht girl.

And it’s not just those Instagram models and wannabe stars that are considered yacht girls. As you work up the wealth chain, you may be surprised to recognize some celebrity names synonymous with yachting.

What is 'yachting' in Hollywood?

In Hollywood, the term yacht girl essentially means a woman who works as an escort for high-end clientele , not just on yachts but for any social event.

While the practice has only somewhat recently gained mainstream notoriety, if you think back on the many tabloid photos of models and actresses on yachts from years past, it appears to be something that's gone on in Hollywood “for 60 years,” according to Elie Nahas, who ran a Beirut-based modeling agency before being arrested on charges of running a prostitution ring in 2007.

In 2013, "The Hollywood Reporter" ran a feature describing this so-called yachting during the Cannes Film Festival.

“Every year during the festival there are 30 or 40 luxury yachts in the bay at Cannes, and every boat belongs to a very rich person. Every boat has about 10 girls on it; they are usually models, and they are usually nude or half nude,” Nahas told THR.

At the end of the night, each woman would receive a “gift,” a generous amount of money that the client would put in an envelope for her.

And while many of these women were self-proclaimed local prostitutes and escorts, the Cannes Film Festival is, of course, known for its celebrity attendees — and it’s rumored that celebrity women trying to fast-track a name for themselves in Hollywood become yacht girls, too.

“Women installed on yachts in Cannes during the film festival are called ‘yacht girls,’ and the line between professional prostitutes and B- or C-list Hollywood actresses and models who accept payment for sex with rich older men is sometimes very blurred, explains one film industry veteran,” Dana Kennedy wrote for THR.

Some women in Hollywood have accused their celebrity peers of being yacht girls.

A 2017 blind item (celebrity gossip that doesn’t outwardly name the celebrity) allegedly written by a struggling actress describes being lured by another actress into the world of yachting :

“The actress I was talking to made it sound super easy and that she only had [sex] a few times with guys while yachting and that it was mostly partying and being arm candy,” she writes, explaining that eventually she agreed to try it for $25,000 upfront, but admitting that the experience was less than glamorous.

Blind item readers guessed that Canadian actress Vanessa Lengies wrote the blind item and further surmised that it may be one of the Glee actresses Naya Rivera or Heather Morris that introduced her to yachting. None of these claims have ever been substantiated.

If you believe the rumors, it would seem that yachting is a rite of passage for women hoping to “make it” in Hollywood, and even some celebrities we now consider A-List are thought to be former yacht girls.

In an excerpt from her 2021 memoir , “My Body,” Emily Ratajkowski details being paid $25,000 at the start of her career to go to the Superbowl with now-disgraced Malaysian financier Jho Low, who "‘just liked to have famous men and women around,’” she explains her manager told her at the time.

She writes about attending the star-studded Coachella on someone else’s dime, having drinks paid for at clubs, and attending afterparties with Oscar-winning actors before actually becoming a celebrity herself.

One could infer from this recollection that, in order to be able to tell these stories, Ratajkowski was herself a yacht girl. “My Body” suggests as much, and in it, she subtly gives away the identity of another celebrity woman who yachted alongside her.

Ratajkowski describes watching as Low gave shots to a Victoria’s Secret model. While she doesn’t name drop, Ratajkowski gives just enough information for readers to figure who that model likely was.

“Now she kept her eyes locked on him as he took his shot, throwing her head back dramatically as he did, only to quickly toss the alcohol over her shoulder,” Ratajkowski writes. “When he faced her again, her eyes sparkled and the famous dimples appeared on her cheeks.”

Low has since become a fugitive wanted for allegedly running an international money laundering scheme, and in 2017, Reuters reported that model Miranda Kerr — known for her dimples — was being ordered to return “diamond pendants, earrings and other jewelry worth about $8 million” that Low allegedly gifted her to government agents.

In 2017, Ratajkowski also posted a video on Instagram potentially outing Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber as yacht girls as they danced aboard a yacht during that year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Many people have also accused Meghan Markle of yachting (but then again, what haven't people accused Markle of at this point).

People have pointed to an old photo of Markle on a yacht as proof that she’s a former yacht girl.

Another old blind item also suggested the former actress was available to “rent.”

"If you see B actress post scantily clad photos of themselves on Social Media, this is often a Comm to [them] that this person is available to ‘rent’ for a weekend of ‘yachting,’” the tweet says, including a photo of Markle in a swimsuit.

Markle’s close friendship pre-Harry with actress Priyanka Chopra has naturally led some to guess that Chopra once yachted as well.

Another actress that faces endless rumors of yachting is Russian actress Irina Shayk , which according to THR, is par for the course as the outlet writes that yachting your way to stardom happens with “disturbing frequency,” particularly when it comes to foreign-born actresses.

According to THR, who claims to know “of at least one now-prominent actress who made her first connections on a Cannes yacht and quickly landed her debut role in a U.S.-shot movie,” such as with Shayk’s 2014 film “Hercules,” it’s “a red flag any time you see a foreign-born actress with no credits suddenly make her way into a U.S.-shot movie.”

Of course, when it comes to yachting in Hollywood, all of these claims appear to be unfounded.

These rumors make for good gossip, whether you’re talking about low-level social media influencers or high-profile celebrity actresses.

However, nothing is proven, leaving us to wonder any time we see a photo of women on a yacht.

While the real Jordan Belfort has said he won’t be making any money off the film adaptation of his memoir “ The Wolf Of Wall Street ,” one can only imagine that the man who makes his current living as a motivational speaker, will earn a boost in folks curious to hear what he has to say following the movie. And with the stories he’s accumulated from his hedonistic days in the financial game, it’s no wonder that Belfort is an engaging raconteur, and this 13-minute video from a few years back proves it.

One of the wildest sequences in a film already filled with unbelievable, outrageous acts, is Belfort’s European yacht trip which starts in sun dappled Italy and soon finds drugs, disaster and near death looming for everyone involved. It’s one of the moments in “The Wolf Of Wall Street” where you wonder if it really happened, but to hear Belfort himself tell the tale, it’s so outlandish it just has to be true. In a conversation with The Room Live  (via Reddit ) Belfort shares the entire story from beginning to end, even detouring slightly to explain the phases of being high on quaaludes. Yes, really.

Meanwhile, back in November we had the chance to talk with the film’s screenwriter,  Terence Winter , who revealed that the “ Goodfellas ” template is one that ‘Wolf’ didn’t veer too far from. “It is very much [in that vein],” he explained. “It’s sort of written in the same style, voice-overs, it’s a very fast movie, it’s really a wild roller coaster ride.” And now with film in theaters, director Martin Scorsese elaborated and defended his choice of approach.

“If you’re gonna use a voiceover to tell people what’s missing, that’s cheating in a way, right? But if you use it for other reasons—if you use it for commenting [as in Wolf], ‘Brad died at the same age as Mozart. I don’t know why that came to mind. It doesn’t matter.’—I mean, that’s interesting. It’s about character. It’s about speaking. It takes you into the story,” he told THR .

“I guess it’s a way of exposition. That’s kinda the key, in a way. Look, I’ve done it, you know? We’ve done it at times. And sometimes, by the way, you can do the exposition and just get away with it; it’s extraordinary just being able to do it, flat, straight out, move on, because there are more important things than specific exposition. And then there are some kinds of exposition that you get stuck in…” he continued. “So maybe it’s better to avoid it completely and just try to find other ways. But the voiceover work that I like is voiceover about character. He could be listing everything he owns and cares about, but it’s more about him—him or her, you know? It’s not about what an IPO is, for God’s sakes. [In Wolf the character of Belfort starts to explain what an IPO is and then acknowledges that the audience isn’t following what he’s saying.]”

All we know is that while Leonardo DiCaprio does a good job in channeling Belfort’s self-destructive energy, there’s no better narrator than the man himself, so check out his insane story below.
