Does this 357-Foot New Yacht Belong to Steven Spielberg?

Oceanco is keeping details of the mammoth vessel’s owner under wraps.

Oceanco is used to catering for the fabulously wealthy; earlier this year the Dutch shipbuilder delivered Jeff Bezos’s gleaming new ship , Koru. Now, the rumor mill is going into overdrive once again. This time, Steven Spielberg is reportedly the billionaire behind its newest yacht: Seven Seas.

Spanning 357 feet, the mammoth motoryacht isn’t as long as Koru – which scooped the title of the longest sailing yacht on the planet at 417 ft – but she does cut an impressive figure. This isn’t Spielberg’s first foray into the yachting world – the Hollywood director had his first ship (also called Seven Seas ) delivered by Oceanco back in 2010.

The original Seven Seas – whose name is inspired by Spielberg’s seven children – measured 282 feet and boasted an expansive spa , gym, beauty salon, and, of course, movie theatre. But the four-time Academy Award winner sold the ship to Canadian billionaire Barry Zekelman in 2021 for a cool $151m (the ship has since been renamed Man of Steel).

It seems Spielberg has caught the superyacht bug; the new Seven Seas is even bigger and more lavish than her predecessor. So, what do we know about the director’s latest ship? While Oceanco has remained relatively tight-lipped on the project, a few key details have emerged which we’ll dive into here.

Who is building Steven Spielberg’s new yacht?

Spielberg yacht Seven Seas

The superyacht – previously known as project Y720 – was commissioned back in 2022 for a whopping $250m. She was built by Oceanco – the same shipyard that made Spielberg’s old boat in Alblasserdam, a town in the western Netherlands around 12 miles from Rotterdam. Omani billionaire businessman Mohammed al Barwani bought the luxury shipyard back in 2010 (he also owns Turquoise Yachts in Istanbul).

Oceanco has an impressive track record when it comes to building jaw-dropping superyachts. As well as recently unveiling Bezos’s Koru, four years ago the shipbuilder delivered Black Pearl – a striking three-mast vessel which, at 350 ft, became the largest sailing yacht in the world at the time, and garnered attention for its cutting-edge eco-credentials.

What do we know about the design?

Oceanco collaborated with Dutch firm Sinot Yacht Architecture Design to build Spielberg’s new yacht. The project was overseen by Lateral Naval Architects, with the team carrying out an “extensive optimization process” to ensure Seven Seas met the highest performance standards (she is the first LY3-compliant yacht to feature a Marine Evacuation System).

Powered by twin MTU 20V 4000 M73L diesel engines, she is able to reach top speeds of up to 20 knots and weighs in at 4,444 GT. Her sleek steel hull, teak deck, and lightweight aluminum superstructure give her a graceful silhouette; this is certainly a yacht to turn heads.

Considerably larger than Spielberg’s former yacht, Seven Seas 2.0 can host up to 14 guests across seven cabins (so there’s plenty of space for his entire family). There’s also room onboard for up to 30 crew, plus a gym, pool, spa, beach club, helipad and tender garage. Oh, and there’s a movie theatre too. Obviously.

The fourth largest project delivered by Oceanco to date, she was glimpsed for the first time in March 2022 being rolled out of the construction shed at the shipyard and was spotted in the Port of Gibraltar in early July.

How about the interiors?

Spielberg yacht exterior

It’s extremely unlikely we’ll get to see inside Spielberg’s new yacht anytime soon, but we do know the interiors onboard Seven Seas have been crafted by Beverly Hills-based designer Molly Isaksen (in a telling sign she was also brought in for the interiors onboard Man of Steel ).

While details remain sparse, Oceanco did reveal we can expect plenty of “natural materials and glass onboard, offering guests an unparalleled outward-looking experience”.

It’s a wrap for Steven Spielberg’s superyacht Seven Seas .

The world-famous director finally sold his epic 282-footer last week to an unknown buyer, according to Merle Wood & Associates . Although the brokerage firm did not specificity the amount paid, the vessel, now known as Man of Steel , was listed earlier this year for $160 million . Thom Conboy of Denison Yachting represented the buyer, who is apparently a longtime repeat client.

The blockbuster yacht, built by noted shipyard Oceanco to Spielberg’s exact specifications, first hit the seas back in 2010. The Academy Award winner, who has a net worth of $3.7 billion, spared no expense when designing his dream machine, and this is the first time it has been offered for sale.

The glitzy interior, which was penned by Nuvolari & Lenard and Molly Isaksen, spans four decks and offers ample space for entertaining A-listers. The vessel can accommodate 20 guests across nine generous staterooms, as well as 28 crew. The scene-stealer is, of course, Spielberg’s owner’s suite, which features a full-beam stateroom with ensuite and dressing room, along with an office and a terrace with its own private jacuzzi.

Naturally, Seven Seas is brimming with amenities fit for film royalty, including supersized screens in every room and a full movie theater. Elsewhere, there is a sauna, steam room, gym, pool, huge beach club, helipad and countless lounge areas and bars. As expected, there’s also a fully-stocked garage packed with a tender, speedboat, water toys and diving gear.

Spielberg ensured Seven Seas lived up to her name, too. Over the past decade, the 74-year-old has taken the go-anywhere superyacht all across the seven seas. It’s been spotted sailing off the coast of France during the Cannes Film Festival, and, more recently, on the waters near Antigua and Barbuda. The yacht’s transatlantic capability comes courtesy of twin MTU engines packing 4,680 hp each. She can hit a top speed of 20 knots or cruise at a more leisurely 15 knots.

Now that Spielberg has called cut on Seven Seas , we are patiently awaiting his next marine masterpiece.

The Incredible Features Of Steven Spielberg's $160 Million Superyacht

steven spielberg smiling

In 2021, the Seven Seas, the luxury yacht belonging to billionaire movie director Steven Spielberg, was sold to billionaire steel magnate Barry Zekelman after being listed for almost $158 million earlier in the year (via Bloomberg ).

Spielberg first commissioned the 282-foot yacht in 2010. The superyacht was designed by Oceanco, a luxury shipbuilding company from the Netherlands. If the name sounds familiar, this company has also recently built a superyacht for Amazon founder  Jeff Bezos . The Seven Seas was custom-made for the award-winning film director and has lots of amenities and high-end features. It's a powerful ship that can hit a top speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots. The yacht also has two MTU engines, which provide a walloping 4,680 horsepower each, according to Robb Report .

In the past, this yacht has been sailing all over and has been seen cruising off the coast of France during the Cannes Film Festival, and in the Caribbean near the islands of Antigua and Barbuda.

It's decked out inside

The Seven Seas has four spacious decks and plenty of room for relaxing and entertaining guests. It features nine cabins that can accommodate up to 20 people, plus 28 crew members. The owner's suite for Spielberg is gorgeous and has a deck with a jacuzzi, office, and private terrace. It also has a full-beam VIP stateroom on the main deck with several other cabins on the lower deck (via Robb Report and Superyacht Times ).

Designers Nuvolari Lenard and Molly Isaksen collaborated to create the boat's lush wooden-themed interior (via Architectural Digest ). As would be expected, a yacht as opulent as the Seven Seas is jam-packed with amenities for Spielberg and his guests to enjoy. Published photos of the Seven Seas show jumbo screens in every room and a home cinema onboard. You can also find a sauna, steam room, gym, massage room, lounge areas, bars, and a swimming pool. This yacht is so large it can even accommodate a helipad. Like other superyachts, it comes with the standard garage where you can fit speedboats, water toys, and diving gear.

Now that Steven Spielberg has sold his yacht, fans just have to wait and see if another mega yacht is coming in the future.

MAN OF STEEL Yacht – Premier $150 M Superyacht

Measuring 86 meters, she is one of the world’s largest yachts.

Previously known as SEVEN SEAS, the name was inspired by the fact Spielberg had seven children. He owned the vessel from her delivery in 2010 through to 2021.

MAN OF STEEL yacht interior

The interior of the MAN OF STEEL yacht includes a fully equipped gym, a spa, a beach club, a movie theatre, a beauty salon, a dance floor, and of course, a glass elevator that connects the different levels of the yacht.

The gym is arguably one of the most impressive parts of this superyacht as it has floor-to-ceiling windows providing great views from one of the upper decks of the vessel.

This allows guests to have a beautiful view of not only the pool below but also the breathtaking scenery this yacht might pass when underway.

The private owners’ deck offers a fantastic state-of-the-art master bedroom with its own dressing room as well as an attached office or study. This suite includes its own private deck area with a sizable jacuzzi perfect for relaxing and drinking a glass of wine under starry skies.

The six additional luxurious suites can accommodate 12 additional guests allowing the MAN OF STEEL to welcome up to 14 guests in total who are tended to by 23 crew members. The MAN OF STEEL interior was designed by Nuvolari & Lenard and Molly Isaksen and is equipped with exquisite furniture made of walnut, teak, and rosewood, accented with natural materials and fabrics.

The design of the yacht interior is simple yet classy, with clean and minimalist spaces. Wooden furnishings can be found in all parts of the vessel, although the interior is not as opulently furnished and decorated as other superyachts in its price category.

Nuvolari & Lenard is a renowned design duo that specializes in traditional yacht design for vessels between 25 and 185 meters in length. Their aim is to redefine beauty while keeping classical elements in mind.

In collaboration with the American interior designer Molly Isaksen, they created a one-of-a-kind fusion of naval architecture, incorporating contemporary and traditional elements in the interior of this beautiful vessel. The MAN OF STEEL offers a 250 square feet semi-covered sundeck, which is located adjacent to the main salon that provides enough space for larger events and celebrations aboard the vessel. A crew of 23 members of staff offers an excellent 5-star service and fulfills every possible wish of the guests onboard the MAN OF STEEL superyacht.

With excellent fine dining capabilities and luxurious amenities, this yacht is ideal for private ownership as well as high-end charter service.

Yacht specifications

The MAN OF STEEL has a length of 86 meters (282.15 ft) with a beam of 14.2 meters (46.6 ft) and a draft of 3.91 meters (13 ft).

She was built by Oceana in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands using mainly steel and aluminum which is their specialty. MAN OF STEEL was completed and delivered to Steven Spielberg in 2010. The yacht has her main port in George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands, under whose flag she sails and she has been spotted as far south as the port of Puerto Escondido . With a weight of 2.658 tons and an output of 6,984 kW (9,496 hp), the MAN OF STEEL can reach top speeds of 20 knots.

Her maximum range lies at 4,750 nautical miles, which is respectable considering her size.

Yacht exterior

Designed by Azure Naval Architects and styled by Nuvolari & Lenard, the MAN OF STEEL yacht combines exceptional craftsmanship with unique outlines. The hull of the ship is set in an elegant dark blue, while the upper decks were left in the traditional brilliant white that many yachts bear. On the aft deck, you will find an impressive infinity pool with an incredible 4.6 meter (15 ft) glass wall, which doubles as a movie screen if required. The aft has another slightly smaller pool as well as a sizable deck with comfortable seating. This deck can be used as a helipad for smaller aircraft allowing guests to arrive in style. When this area isn’t needed for landing purposes, it can be covered completely by large awnings providing additional shade to guests.

Seven seas drone shot

Toys and equipment

A yacht this size naturally comes with lots of toys and equipment to entertain the guests onboard.

The MAN OF STEEL carries four jet skis, several sea bobs, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling equipment, and much more.

The two tenders onboard the vessel are always ready to take the guests to the mainland or to the nearest secluded beach.

Spielberg purchased them from Hodgdon Yachts, a shipyard based in Maine in the United States after MAN OF STEEL was delivered in 2010.

The larger of the two tenders, the Limo, has space for twelve people with luxurious leather upholstery, flatscreen television, and air conditioning.

When the weather is nice, the roof of the tender can be lifted and opened using hydraulics.

Additional information

In 2013 MAN OF STEEL was overhauled and refitted by Amico & Co, a well-known superyacht repair and design company.

The shipyard is based in Genoa, Italy, and has a 60,000 m² dock and operating area where work on both smaller and larger vessels can be carried out.

A Closer Look at Steven Spielberg's Yacht Seven Seas

Few names in Hollywood can compare to Steven Spielberg. The mention of this award-winning filmmaker’s name alone brings about memories of some of the industry’s best movies including Jaws, Indiana Jones, Schindler’s List, Lincoln, Ready Player One, and so many more. While we only know a few details about how Spielberg lives his private life, we do know that he owns a yacht—a superyacht at that. Called the Seven Seas , Spielberg’s yacht is the type that exists only in dreams. We’re going to head for the ocean to take a closer look at Spielberg’s yacht and what makes it incredible.

First off, it’s important to note that Spielberg’s yacht is worth about $184 million. That’s a lot of money, but it’s not that big of a deal for someone whose net worth is about $3.7 billion. Spielberg continues to add to that net worth, not only through making films but also through his yacht. Business Insider tells us that Spielberg actually opened up the doors to his yacht to allow anyone to charter it for a fee. We say anyone because even you can charter the yacht as long as you can afford the monthly fee of $1.2 million. If that fee is a little too steep for you, allow us to just indulge your senses by telling you why the yacht might be worth that much.

First off, it may sound ridiculous but people have insane amounts of money everywhere. And Spielberg can charter his yacht by that much because he is who he is. His superyacht is actually for sale, and it’s a good sales strategy to allow potential buyers to charter the yacht before purchase. This 282-foot long vessel was designed and built by Dutch company Oceano . The style of the yacht is sleek and elegant. Apart from its size, you can tell how luxurious it really is from its exterior design. The blue hull perfectly contrasts the white color of the upper deck platform. It’s simply a stunning view from any angle you take it in.

The Interior

Moving into the interior is a similar experience. Every single room inside the yacht is outlined with beautiful and rich wooden materials. The décor is exotic, eclectic, and equally luxurious. Every single room in the superyacht is larger than average rooms on land. But the room sizes aren’t the best part about the Seven Seas. When Oceano created this yacht, they packed it in with a number of amenities that only the rich could afford to have built. The Seven Seas has a gorgeous infinity pool, but it’s no ordinary infinity pool. This area is outfitted with a 15-foot dual-purpose glass screen that serves as a monitor for movies to be played on. After all, what’s a Spielberg yacht if you can’t watch movies on it? The infinity pool happens to also serve another luxury purpose: a helipad. The pool converts somehow just so a helicopter (maybe Spielberg’s) can come and go as needed. Other amenities in the yacht includes an indoor cinema with a screen larger than the infinity pool’s, a fully equipped gym that features an amazing panoramic view of the ocean, a fully functional spa for relaxation, and of course, a fully stocked bar for some libations.

Watersports

The fun doesn’t end there at the Seven Seas. The yacht will also give you access to a lot of watersports options. As a guest on this yacht, you can have access to various watersports equipment such as snorkels, wetsuits, kayaks, sea bobs, water skiis, and so many more. For those seriously considering renting out this charter, you’d have to consider the accommodations first. The yacht needs 26 crewmembers to be fully staffed. The rest of the guest rooms can be occupied by up to 12 guests, plus Spielberg. While all the guest rooms are lovely and amazing, not all guest rooms are created equal. You could expect that Spielberg’s room happens to be the best, as it features a study room and a Jacuzzi among other special things. All of the guest rooms are fit to welcome some of Hollywood’s royalty including Leonardo di Caprio and actress Blake Lively.

When it comes to performance, only true power could pull a yacht of that size. The Seven Seas has an incredibly powerful engine that has a maximum speed of 20 knots. The superyacht cruises at 15 knots. It has a range of 15,000 nautical miles, and it’s outfitted with some of the best stabilizing mechanisms out there. Interestingly enough, Spielberg is actually prone to seasickness. In fact, he’s said a few times before that he’s actually not much of an ocean person. People have said similar things before only to have their minds changed by the ocean. It’s been rumored that the reason why Spielberg is chartering the Seven Seas is that he wants to sell it for a bigger yacht. Despite the seasickness, Spielberg has fallen in love with the ocean and the boating life. He wants more yacht space than what he’s got now, and we can only speculate that he’s probably looking to spend more time in it than he does now. After all, being in the ocean for a long time can begin to feel claustrophobic. It’s been rumored that Spielberg has his eyes set on a particular yacht that sails at about 300 feet. It isn’t much bigger than the Seven Seas, but it sure costs much more. The new yacht is said to cost $250 million, and it probably has even better amenities than the Seven Seas. For now, Spielberg is enjoying the superyacht he has now until it’s time for the next.

Steven Spielberg Lists His Superyacht for $160 Million

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Beyond his West Coast megahomes , Steven Spielberg also owns a 282-foot-long superyacht. The legendary film director bought it in 2010, but after a decade of ownership, Dirt reports that he’s putting his custom-crafted vessel, Seven Seas, up for sale with a high asking price of around $160 million.

The massive mansion-sized vessel was named after his seven kids and his former wife, actress Kate Capshaw . Built by Oceanco, it features four decks, 45,000 gallons of fresh water, and a 77,000-gallon fuel tank with a range of up to 5,200 miles, which is more than enough for a transatlantic trip. Apart from all the space and power, the yacht is equipped with a swimming pool, multiple spas, a total of 17 televisions, easy-to-control smart-home technology, and much more.

In order to operate things safely, the listing says it takes a crew of 28 people. When it came to design and decor, Spielberg called on the expertise of Nuvolari & Lenard and Molly Isaksen. Upon entering, there’s a wood-paneled common area that has elegant built-in shelves lined with books and even a bar set up with Guinness on draft.

The moviemaker’s main suite is on the upper level with a private study, an extensive wardrobe, and a decked-out bathroom that’s bigger than most New York City studio apartments. Naturally, one of the standout amenities is the ship’s state-of-the-art screening room complete with plush sofas and a baby grand piano. Finally, we’d be remiss not to mention the one-of-a-kind views all around the Jaws director’s boat—though, of course, they are ever-changing.

Steven Spielberg Sells 282-Foot Yacht

Academy Award-winning film director Steven Spielberg has parted ways with a luxury yacht that he commissioned in 2010, Mansion Global reports. It was last listed for €131 million ($151 million USD), though it is not known how much the Catch Me If You Can director got it for.

A whopping 282 feet long, the yacht was built by Oceanco in the Netherlands, with design by Azure Naval Architects. Nuvolari Lenard designed the look of the exterior and worked with interior designer Molly Isaksen on the interiors. (You may have seen her work in the Los Angeles home of fashion designer Jenni Kayne, which AD toured earlier this year.) Photos from the listing show that plenty of wood was used throughout the yacht’s many luxe living areas. Within the ship’s steel hull, there are nine staterooms that can accommodate up to 20 passengers, plus room for a 28-person crew, and separate captain’s quarters. The decks are made of teak and offer plenty of room to soak up the sun.

Amenities onboard include a spot to land a helicopter, a glass elevator, a sauna, pool, jacuzzi, massage area, gym, and—fittingly—a screening room with comfortable, plush-looking seats fit for kicking back with one of Spielberg’s flicks, whether you are an E.T. fan at heart or more partial to serious fare like Schindler’s List .

Spielberg listed the boat earlier this year for $161 million before apparently dropping the price a bit. Back in 2015, The Hollywood Reporter said the Jaws director was selling the boat and commissioning a new one, though it doesn't seem like that ever came to fruition. We’ll have to keep one eye on the high seas to see if Spielberg takes to the water with a new, even bigger boat anytime soon.

Steven Spielberg’s net worth in 2024

S teven Spielberg’s net worth in 2024 is $4.8 billion. Spielberg is one of the most famous directors in the world. He has helmed timeless hits, record-breaking box office successes and iconic movies that are beloved by generations, including Jaws, ET, the Indiana Jones franchise, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and so many more.

Spielberg also is a producer, and one of the movies he’s produced, Maestro, has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture. It is the 13th film he has produced that has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, which is a record. Let’s look at Steven Spielberg’s net worth in 2024.

What is Steven Spielberg’s net worth in 2024?: $4.8 billion (estimate)

Steven Spielberg’s net worth in 2024 is estimated at a whopping $4.8 billion, according to Forbes.

The figure, while beyond incredible, is definitely understandable to a degree. Spielberg’s movies have been box-office miracles, with some of them being among the highest-grossing movies of all time. For instance, Jurassic Park alone made over $1 billion worldwide , closely followed by ET with $792 million and the 2008 Indiana Jones movie with $786 million, according to Statista.

All of these movies were made on relatively small budgets compared to modern-day blockbusters, so the profit margin was even bigger for the studios and Spielberg himself. However, before we get to his success, let’s look at how Steven Spielberg accrued his net worth in 2024.

Steven Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Dec. 18, 1946. As he was born in an Orthodox Jewish family, the wounds from the Holocaust were still fresh, especially due to his father losing so many relatives in Europe. That is what pushed him, later on, to create Schindler’s List.

Spielberg’s family moved around quite a bit, finally settling in California, when he was just about to enter high school. However, even before high school, the famous director started making movies, most noticeably during his time in the Boy Scouts. In California, in close proximity to the biggest movie studios in the world, is where Spielberg thrived.

Early on, his story attracted attention, and he began work for Universal Studios as an unpaid assistant. Due to his work there, Spielberg’s grades started suffering, and he could not get into the USC film program, but a conversation on the tour bus to Universal got him some attention.

Steven Spielberg’s film career

After creating a short that impressed executives at the studio, Spielberg signed a seven-year directorial deal in 1968 when he was just 22 years old, making him the youngest director signed to that type of contract with a major studio. It would be seven years until Spielberg hit it big with Jaws, a movie that won three Academy Awards and still remains one of the best movies ever made.

A few years later, Spielberg earned his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. His career exploded from there. Spielberg directed the Indiana Jones trilogy, together with the fourth installment in 2008, but also moved into more serious topics with the 1993 historical drama Schindler’s List.

In 2018, he released Ready Player One, the film adaptation of a best-selling science fiction novel. Spielberg has also directed comedies and historical epics, adding to his bona fides as one of the most versatile directors in cinema.

Spielberg has been nominated for 22 Academy Awards for either Best Picture or Best Director and has won three, with two of them being for Best Director, for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, and one for Best Picture for Schindler’s List. His other awards include two BAFTA awards, nine Golden Globes and 12 Emmys for his television ventures.

It is truly an illustrious career, and he has the potential to increase his award count if Maestra can sweep up some of these huge accolades at the 2024 Academy Awards ceremony.

Steven Spielberg’s other business ventures

In terms of income apart from movies, Steven Spielberg also earned massive sums through Universal Parks. It was all caused by an offer MCA made to him in 1993, when Spielberg accepted a much smaller initial take from other studios but made a 2 percent cut of every ticket sold at these parks.

However, he is no longer paid that money, due to the fact he sold his production company to Comcast, later owner of MCA, thus ending the arrangement.

Spielberg also cut a deal with George Lucas, trading 2.5 percent of all income from Close Encounters of the Third Kind for 2.5 percent of all Star Wars income. While Lucas did make good money from the Spielberg movie, the 2.5 percent from Star Wars is paying Spielberg even to this day.

Spielberg also has dabbled in television mostly as a producer. He has done a wide range that include science fiction, historical series and even documentaries. However, what he’s probably best known for is helping to produce Warner Bros. cartoons, including Tiny Toons and Animaniacs and their spinoff series.

Nevertheless, were you at all stunned by Steven Spielberg’s net worth in 2024?

Steven Spielberg's 7 Children: Everything to Know

Steven Spielberg is the proud father of seven children — some of which have followed in his footsteps

Jessica Sager is a contributing writer at PEOPLE. She has been working at PEOPLE since 2023. Her work has previously appeared in Parade, The New York Post, Seventeen, PopCrush and more.

Steven Spielberg has one talented brood.

The Oscar-winning director first became a father with the birth of his son Max, 38, whom he shares with his ex-wife Amy Irving. When Spielberg married actress Kate Capshaw in 1991, he became a father to her daughter Jessica, 47, and son Theo, 35. Spielberg and Capshaw went on to have four children together — Sasha, 33, Sawyer, 32, Mikaela, 28, and Destry, 27.

While the iconic director is now a proud father of seven, he didn't always want children. In fact, it was his experience working on E.T. that opened him up to the idea of parenthood.

"I didn't want to have kids because it was not a kind of equation that made sense for me as I went from movie to movie to movie, script to script," Spielberg told Variety at a celebration for the iconic film's 40th anniversary . "It never occurred to me till halfway through E.T. : I was a parent on that film. I was literally feeling like I was very protective of Henry [Thomas] and Mike [McNaughton] and my whole cast, and especially Drew [Barrymore] , who was only 6 years old. And I started thinking, 'Well, maybe this could be my real life someday.' It was the first time that it occurred to me that maybe I could be a dad. And maybe in a way, a director is a dad, or a mom … I really felt that that would be my big production."

He added, "I have seven kids and six grandchildren, so E.T. worked for me very well."

Some of Spielberg's kids have even pursued careers in the film industry both in front and behind the camera. Ahead, read everything to know about Steven Spielberg's 7 adult children.

Jessica Capshaw, 47

Jessica Capshaw is Capshaw's daughter from her first marriage to Robert "Bob" Capshaw. Born in Columbia, Missouri, on Aug. 9, 1976, Jessica and her family moved to New York City when she was about 3 years old. After her parents divorced, Jessica eventually moved to Los Angeles with her mom, where she graduated from Harvard-Westlake High School.

Like her mom, Jessica pursued a career in acting. While attending Brown University, Jessica appeared in several plays, per Broadway World , including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof . She also attended London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts during her summer breaks, starring as Puck in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream .

Jessica made her big screen debut when she appeared in The Locusts alongside her mom in 1997. She graduated from Brown with a B.A. in English in 1998 and appeared in the indie drama Denial the same year.

The actress' breakthrough came in 2009 when she starred in Grey's Anatomy as pediatric surgeon Arizona Robbins. Originally intended for a multi-episode arc, Jessica was promoted to a series regular in season 6 as a love interest for Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez).

Jessica left Grey's Anatomy in 2018 after 10 years on the show. She said at the time that she appreciated bringing LGBTQ+ representation to primetime network TV, adding, "I am grateful that I have gotten to bring her to life and for the life that she has brought to me. I am sad to see her go, but I am consoled by the idea that she will continue to live on and on in all of our consciences and our imaginations. Shonda, thank you for the ride on this incredible rollercoaster."

She has been married to Christopher Gavigan, co-founder of the Honest Company (with Jessica Alba ) and founder of Prima, a wellness and skincare brand, since 2004. Gavigan and Jessica are proud parents to son Luke Hudson and daughters Eve Augusta, Poppy James and Josephine Kate.

Max Spielberg, 38

Spielberg's first son with his ex-wife Irving, Max Spielberg, was born on June 13, 1985, in Santa Monica, California. Spielberg and Irving divorced amicably in 1989, per The Los Angeles Times , and shared custody of Max.

Max works in the film industry in a different capacity than his famous parents. He's credited as a graphic designer and in the art department of several video games, including Assassin's Creed: Unity and as a writer, editor, director and producer of a short film called Snap Shot , released in 2012.

In 2011, Max began dating makeup artist and beauty vlogger Valerie LaChance, and they tied the knot on Dec. 19, 2014.

Theo Spielberg, 35

Theo Spielberg was born on Aug. 21, 1988. Capshaw adopted Theo before marrying Spielberg in 1991, who then adopted Theo as well. As a child, Theo shared a bedroom with his little sister Sasha and the two would "sneak out and re-enact The Lion King with our stuffed animals," he told Vanity Fair in 2016.

Theo attended Yale University and has since pursued a career in music. He and Sasha started a band called Wardell — after his middle name and mom Capshaw's nickname — and released their debut single "Opossum" in 2011. Two years later, NBC News reported that they were signed to Jay-Z 's Roc Nation. Theo plays all the instruments in the band, while Sasha provides vocals. Per Vanity Fair , Theo's band has toured with Ryan Adams and opened for Vampire Weekend, Grimes and Haim .

The musician has been candid about the impact his father's fame has had on his band's success and makes no bones about being the Oscar winner's son. "We don't know otherwise," he told The New York Times in 2013. "It's not like he's been hustling lots of small rock clubs — 'You've got to see these kids!' Although that would be really funny."

Sasha Spielberg, 3 3

Spielberg and Capshaw welcomed their daughter, Sasha Spielberg, on May 14, 1990, in L.A.

Sasha has a few things in common with her older sister Jessica: She dabbled in acting (she had walk-on roles as "Woman With Package" in The Post and a "Young Israeli Woman Watching TV" in Munich ) and graduated from Brown University.

"A lot of the movies that I played tiny roles in stemmed from me auditioning for a bigger role in the movie, and then the director being like, 'OK, you're not right for this role, but I kind of want to still put you in the movie,' " she told Rolling Stone in 2018. "If you see my IMDb, it's pretty obvious that a lot of them are my dad's movies, and he would always just find these little parts for me, and be like, 'Hey, I need a favor, do you want to be in this little role where you punch Shia LaBeouf ?' They were so little — I'd take a day off from high school or middle school to shoot, and I felt so cool. It was just a cute, endearing bonding experience. It's a very specific father-daughter–bonding thing."

In addition to her work with Theo in their band Wardell, Sasha, who described herself to Rolling Stone as "a bit of a chameleon," also releases solo music under the name Buzzy Lee. She has said her solo musical work is a closer representation of who she is, especially in comparison to her acting.

"I haven't auditioned seriously or acted seriously in a really long time," she said. "I've been so, so deep in music. I always do love [acting] when I'm doing it. But in terms of where my heart is, it's always been in music. That's the cheesiest — that's literally like a Celine Dion lyric."

In May 2022, Sasha married artist and designer Harry McNally , son of restaurateur Keith McNally.

Sawyer Spielberg, 32

Spielberg and Capshaw's son Sawyer Spielberg was born on March 10, 1992, in L.A., and is following in his mother's acting footsteps.

Sawyer revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show in April 2021 that Spielberg used his directing skills to keep Sawyer in line when he was growing up.

"When I was a teenager, I had a hard time getting up for school. One morning, he came in and he said, 'OK, I'm a director, you're an actor. I'm going to barge into your room and you have to get up, brush your teeth, get dressed and head down for breakfast,' " he recalled. "Sure enough, he came in, he said 'action,' and I got up, brushed my teeth, came downstairs for breakfast and it worked. His directing skills have worked in both the cinema and at home."

Sawyer made his big-screen acting debut in the 2021 horror film Honeydew . He told Tatler that despite serving as a production assistant on Spielberg's movies (including Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ) as a teenager, film wasn't his first choice as a line of work. In fact, he said he originally intended to study engineering or open up a restaurant before he first took up theater when he was 17 years old.

"It wasn't until about two or three years ago that I wanted to try doing more film work," he told the magazine in 2021. "I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. As a teenager I was just kind of running around LA skateboarding … For a long time I only imagined myself doing theater."

Theater worked out well in more ways than one: In addition to opening Sawyer up to the idea of acting work, he met his wife, Raye Levine Spielberg, while performing. "We were both taking a class together and it was an immediate connection," he told Tatler . "We've been tied at the hip ever since." They share one daughter together.

Mikaela Spielberg, 28

Spielberg and Capshaw adopted daughter Mikaela Spielberg, who was born on Feb. 28, 1996, at birth. In 2020, Mikaela revealed that she was pursuing a career in adult entertainment as a dancer.

Mikaela told The Sun that she was exposed to grooming and abuse by "predators" as a child, but was quick to clarify that none of the alleged perpetrators were related to her family nor in their circle. She said she struggled with borderline personality disorder, self-esteem and body image issues, as well as other mental health concerns, which only worsened when she went off to a boarding school for troubled teens.

"I came out of there worst [ sic ] than I was going in — with more anxiety and more attachment issues, more depression and more hatred from my body. I actually developed an eating disorder while I was living there," she recalled to The Sun , adding, "It's not my parents' fault. They couldn't have known."

Mikaela said that she began drinking heavily and only got sober after nearly dying more than once in her early 20s. She also added that while she was nervous to tell her parents about her line of work, they were ultimately supportive of her choice.

"My safety has always been a number one priority for them," she told The Sun . "I'm doing this, not out of an urge to hurt anybody or be spiteful about it, I'm doing this because I want to honor my body in a way that's lucrative. I actually think that once they see how far I've come from the bottom I was at a year and a half ago, they're going to look at this and go, 'Wow, we actually raised are really self-assured, young lady.' "

While Mikaela isn't keen on speaking about her family life, she told The Daily Beast that being raised by a predominantly white family was difficult for her as a biracial young woman, saying, "You could have all the love in the world and still be incredibly lonely."

Destry Allyn Spielberg, 27

Spielberg and Capshaw's youngest child, Destry Allyn Spielberg, was born in L.A. on Dec. 1, 1996.

Already an accomplished equestrian as child, Destry expanded her horizons as an adult. When she was 19 years old, she nabbed a modeling contract with DT Model Management, which also repped Ireland Baldwin (daughter of Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin ) and Dylan Penn (daughter of Sean Penn and Robin Wright ), among others, at the time.

In July 2020, Destry, who lives in London, got engaged to actor Genc Legrand.

Destry made waves in 2021 when she found herself in the center of a conversation between writer and editor Franklin Leonard and Ben Stiller (son of Jerry Stiller and Jane Meara) about nepotism in Hollywood . Leonard tweeted an article about the film Destry was directing, writing, "Hollywood's a meritocracy, right?" The film stars Hopper Penn (son of Penn and Wright) and was written by Brian D'Arcy James (nephew of the late Blade Runner producer Brian Kelly) and Owen King (son of iconic horror writer Stephen King ).

In response, Destry wrote in a since-deleted tweet, "I am just a young aspiring female filmmaker who admires the art of cinema. People can argue nepotism, but I know deep down that I worked hard to get where I am and it wasn't easy. Beyond proud of this film and proud of the team it took to make it." She continued, "I acknowledge that I was born with privilege! I own that through and through! I make it my mission to bring new talent into the industry & give opportunities to artists of all backgrounds. No one should be left out because of the connections they don't have."

On Jan. 16, 2023, Spielberg spoke about Destry's opportunity to direct Four Assassins (And A Funeral) during an episode of the podcast SmartLess . "She was hired based on a short film," he explained. "She made a wonderful short film, which I adored, and the producers behind the John Wick series saw it and gave her a movie — with a respectable budget, too."

He added, "So, it's exciting for the whole family."

How Steven Spielberg Dominated Culture and the 1994 Oscars With ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Schindler’s List’

Steven Spielberg kissed his wife and embraced his mother before his left hand floated to his temple in disbelief. Then he grew visibly emotional as he made his way to the stage of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The 46-year-old Spielberg had just won his first Oscar — as best director for “ Schindler’s List ,” an unflinching look at the Holocaust and its horrors. “This is a big surprise,” presenter Clint Eastwood said somewhat sarcastically.

“This is the first time I’ve ever had one of these in my hands,” Spielberg said as he clasped his Oscar, surprised by both the weight of the statuette and the moment. When “Schindler’s List” was named best picture and Spielberg stood behind the podium for a second time that night, he acknowledged his long road to awards glory, one that had seen Oscar voters largely overlook masterpieces like “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Winning, he told the crowd, was like “the best drink of water after the longest drought of my life.”

And many of his contemporaries were privately rooting for Spielberg to fail. He had been too successful, too beloved, and was overdue for his comeuppance. Plus, his guileless public persona didn’t square with his shrewd business sense and competitiveness, something that rubbed studio executives and power brokers the wrong way. “This man is not the same as the soft and cuddly characters he creates,” a top agent told Variety in a 1991 article. In that same piece, an unnamed studio chief knocked Spielberg’s monarchical tendencies: “It’s the rule of kings: ‘I am the king and I make the rules.’”

During the lead-up to the release of “Schindler’s List,” Spielberg bristled when asked by The New York Times about the resentment that he inspired in colleagues. “I don’t feel the jealousy, I don’t feel the envy, only when I hear about it. I have a feeling that the people who say these things about me are the ones who see me socially and drink my Evian water with me and call themselves my friends. But that’s Hollywood.”

That two-facedness has been a staple of a business that has run on backstabbing and hollow compliments since the silent era, and it remains a fixture of the industry today. But in other important ways, 1993 represented a transitional moment in moviemaking, politics and society.

Bill Clinton was inaugurated in January 1993, ending 12 years of Republican dominance of the executive branch, while ushering a brand of centrism that married social progressivism with economic boosterism. The president was a film fan too, one who urged all Americans to see “Schindler’s List,” an unprecedented White House endorsement of a movie.

There was also a growing tabloid-ification of politics and media. This was an era when coverage of the new administration collided with headlines about Tonya Harding, Joey Buttafuoco and the Menendez brothers, a convergence that Oscar host Whoopi Goldberg alluded to in her opening monologue, joking that she wanted Lorena Bobbitt, notorious for separating her abusive husband from his penis, to “please meet Bob Dole.”

And in April of 1993, the source code for the World Wide Web was r eleased into the public domain , allowing people to more easily access the internet. This new digital age would loosen the cultural grip that Hollywood held on consumers, setting the stage for YouTube, TikTok, streaming and other forms of entertainment that would challenge the movie business’s preeminence.

But that lay in the future. In 1993, there were more immediate concerns. Al Pacino, Leonardo DiCaprio and other A-listers in the audience at the Oscar ceremony sported red ribbons, a symbol of the AIDS crisis, which snuffed out a generation of entertainers as it became the leading cause of death for Americans between 25 and 44 years old. The epidemic was the subject of “Philadelphia,” the first major studio movie to tackle AIDS, and an unlikely box office hit that scored its star Tom Hanks his first Oscar that night. “The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels,” Hanks said, choking up as he accepted his prize. “We know their names. They number 1,000 for each one of the red ribbons that we wear.”

The other big winner was Jane Campion’s “The Piano,” a drama about a mute woman’s dangerous bond with her musical instrument, which captured best original screenplay, as well as best supporting actress and best actress for 11-year-old Anna Paquin and Holly Hunter. Tommy Lee Jones rounded out the major acting categories, winning supporting actor for his role as a driven marshal in “The Fugitive.”

“The Piano” kicked off the awards dominance of Miramax, the studio that released the movie, and its volatile co-founders Harvey and Bob Weinstein. Before Harvey Weinstein became synonymous with the #MeToo era for his legacy of sexual abuse and assault, he created a business model around critically acclaimed art-house fare aimed at discerning moviegoers, which made it possible for films like “Pulp Fiction,” “The Crying Game” and “Shakespeare in Love” to reach a wider audience. Awards were always a critical element of this strategy, raising the profile of idiosyncratic movies. That resulted in more aggressive Oscar campaigning, with armies of bare-knuckled Miramax awards strategists boosting their own movies by privately slamming rival films as culturally insensitive or historically inaccurate. For a while, it worked. As Harvey Weinstein’s sway over the Oscars grew, winners thanked him in their acceptance speeches more often than they thanked God.

But on that March night, it was all about Steven Spielberg. “Schindler’s List,” with its refusal to sanitize Nazi barbarity, signaled a new maturity in his filmmaking and a shift in his artistic interests. He retained his flair for crowd-pleasers, directing a sequel to “Jurassic Park” and hits like “War of the Worlds,” but he grew more interested in historical epics like “Lincoln” and “Saving Private Ryan,” which used his cinematic gifts to bring the distant past to vibrant life.

Spielberg was joined onstage by a living reminder of those atrocities. His fellow producer and winner, Branko Lustig, had been imprisoned as a child for two years in Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. “My number was 83317,” Lustig said. And then, “People died in front of me in the camps. Their last words were ‘Be a witness of my murder. Tell the world how I died.’ … By helping Steven to make this movie, I hope I fulfill my obligation to the innocent victims of the Holocaust.”
