Boat Stands, Jack Stands, and Blocks

What is a boat stand.

A boat stand (aka jack stand or poppet) is used on land to support the port and starboard sides of a boat while the weight of the boat rests on keel blocks or keel stands. A typical boat stand has 3-4 supporting legs and a central strut that contains a threaded rod with a pad on top.

What are the different kinds of stands?

Boat stands come in a variety of sizes, heights and angles, and are available with flat or V-shaped pads. The two main types of boat stands are powerboat stands and sailboat stands. Typically, sailboat stands have an angled center strut and powerboat stands have a straight, vertical center strut. A keel stand can be used under the keel to support the full weight of a boat.

What type of boat stand should I get?

While it may seem obvious that you should get boat stands based on the type of boat you own, that's not necessarily the case. For example, a powerboat with a deep V-bow would use angled sailboat stands at the bow and powerboat stands at the stern. It's important to choose boat stands based on the angle formed between the hull and the boat stand's center strut. The threaded rod from the top should enter the stand's center strut at approximately a 90 degree angle to the boat's hull.

How many boat stands do I need?

The type and length of your boat determines the number of boat stands needed. Position a pair of stands (one port, one starboard) every 8 feet. In general, for a powerboat or motorboat, you need at least four stands (two on each side, under the chines); for a sailboat, you need at least five stands (two angled stands on each side and a v-stand under the bow). Use additional stands if you're in an extremely windy area, or if you're leaving a sailboat mast in place. In addition, a boat with excessive overhang will require extra stands to support it.

How many stands do sailboats need?

Sailboats typically need one pair of angled stands every eight feet, plus a v-pad stand to cradle the bow. The one exception is a full-keel sailboat, which may not require a bow stand. Use extra stands if the mast is up, if you're in a windy area, or if you have a fin keel sailboat.

How many stands do I need for a powerboat?

For a powerboat, you need one pair of boat stands on each side of the hull, every eight feet along the length of the boat. If using keel stands to support the weight instead of keel blocks, place one keel stand every ten feet along the length of the keel.

What size stands will I need?

To figure out what size stands you need, add the draft of the boat (in inches) to the height of the blocks being placed under the keel, then subtract six inches.

How do you support a boat stand?

Make sure the ground is solid and fairly flat. Place a plywood base under each stand or a small piece of plywood under each leg to spread the load evenly and keep the stand legs from sinking. This is especially important to do on loose ground or asphalt, which can soften in the heat.

How do you use boat stands?

After a boat is pulled out of the water on a travel lift or trailer and placed on flat ground on keel blocks, the boat stands are placed against the port and starboard sides of the boat. Boat stands keep the boat from falling on its side, but they're not designed to support the full weight of the boat. Using boat stands is a balancing act, done by placing them one pair at a time, every eight feet, on opposite sides of the boat. The tops of the boat stands should rest against the hull. For sailboats, secure each port/starboard side pair of stands with a length of safety chain. Refer to the stand manufacturer's directions for placing and tightening stands and safety chain.

What is a boat block?

A boat block is a wide, thick, rectangular, square-cut piece of pine timber. It's made especially for safely and securely supporting the entire weight of a boat, along the centerline, under the keel.

What is a keel block?

A keel block is the same as a boat block that's placed under the keel. However, a more convenient way to block a boat is to place keel stands under the keel, every 10 feet. A keel stand has a threaded center rod with a pad on top that can be raised to rest flat against the bottom of the keel.

How do you block up a boat?

To block a boat, it's put on blocking piles, on flat, solid ground, after it's been pulled from the water on a trailer or travel lift. A blocking pile consists of three blocks - two large ones, placed parallel to each other, and a smaller block placed across the top, on which the keel will rest. Typically, you need a minimum of two blocking piles under the centerline of the keel to keep the boat from rocking fore and aft. Check your owner's manual for details. To avoid stress on the boat, position keel blocks under bulkheads. If desired, the height of the blocking piles can be adjusted for drainage, but for stability, the piles should be as low to the ground as possible.

What are safety chains used for?

Safety chain (3/16" minimum) is used to secure each pair of stands on opposite sides of a boat. There's a place on each boat stand to attach the safety chain.

What are some tips for using boat stands?

• Make sure the ground is solid and fairly flat.
• Check blocks for rotting or splitting; replace damaged or badly rusted stands.
• Place a plywood base under each stand to spread the load evenly and keep the stand legs from sinking.
• Use pairs of boat stands, one placed to port and one to starboard, every 8 ft. along the boat's length.
• Use 3/16" safety chains on all side sailboat stands, chaining pairs together from port to starboard.
• Always chain angled stands, regardless of boat type.
• Use a minimum of four stands per boat, and one set every 10' for longer boats.
• Use a V-stand of an appropriate angle under the bow of all fin keel or bow-heavy sailboats or powerboats.
• In windy areas, remove masts; if mast must be left in, use extra stands.
• If a stand must be removed from under a boat, place another stand beside it first.
• For safety, check boats left on stands frequently, especially if boats are stored for long periods of time.
• Use boat stands to suspend a boat in midair.
• Place blocks on top of boat stands or beneath the legs of boat stands to increase their reach.
• Use rope instead of safety chain to secure boat stand pairs because it can stretch and move the stands out of position.
• Let anyone other than qualified, experienced or authorized person(s) adjust or move boat stands after the stands are in position.
• Tie anything to the boat stands, such as a tarp because the wind can catch it and topple the stand.

Most of the vessel’s weight rests on its keel on either wood blocking or keel stands.   The boat stands safely balance the load when used properly; one stand every 8’ – 10’ (3 meters) along each side of the boat. With sailboat stands, it is crucial that a chain be utilized to connect the stands across the width of the boat (port to starboard). A slot is welded on each base to allow for the chain. This prevents the stands from slipping. Additionally, it is recommended to utilize a stand with a V-Top at the center line towards the bow to prevent the boat from tipping forward on its keel.

What Are Boat Stands?

Boat stands, also known as poppets or jack stands, are used while your vessel is on land to provide support for the starboard and port sides of the boat. They are normally used in conjunction with keel stands or keel blocks that take most of the boat’s weight. Most stands have three to four legs and a strut at the center with a threaded rod and pad at the top.

Boat stands are often used when working on or storing your boat for extended periods of time. Common examples include:

Why Type of Stands Should You Get?

While you may think the obvious option would be to choose boat stands based on the vessel type you own, this is not always the best decision. For instance, if you have a powerboat that has a deep V-shaped bow, you would be best using motorboat stands for the stern, but sailboat stands that are angled for the bow. Therefore, the better way to make the right choice is by considering the angle that is formed between the boat’s hull and the central strut of the stand. Ideally, the threaded rod on the stand should slot into the center strut at an angle of approximately 90-degrees to the hull.

Boat Lifts and Dollys 

Boat lifts are commonly used when looking to store a boat off of its trailer. Boat lift systems consist of multiple legs and span the bottom of the entire hull, making them a good match for smaller boats or those that don't have a very flared hull. 

Boat dollys are perfect when you need to work on your boat but keep it semi-mobile. Since they are supported by wheels and designed to be mobile, they are best for smaller crafts in general. Pontoon boats are also a good fit for boat dollys, as the shape of the dolly can fit the curve of the pontoons. With multiple heights, available dollys are a great choice when dry storing and maintaining your pontoon boat!

How Many  Stands Do You Need?

As you would imagine, it depends on the type of boat you have. If you own a powerboat, it is generally recommended that you use at least four stands, two pairs. If, though, your powerboat has a greater length than 20-feet, you should always use an additional set of boat stands for each extra 10-feet. 

If you have sailboats, you should use five boat stands, one that has a v-shaped head to rest the bow on and at least four more with swivel tops. 

How Do You Use Boat Stands Properly?

To use your stands properly, they need to be securely positioned on flat, preferably firm ground. If you need to place stands on softer ground, you need to make sure the dunnage is under the stand base. Read More

Supports For Starboard/Port Sides

Choose a place to store your boat where there is stable, hard ground to ensure the legs and keel blocks do not sink. The tops of the stand rods should have a minimum amount of thread exposed with the rod placed at an angle as close to perpendicular to the hull as you can. To make sure this is possible, the rear legs should be placed parallel to the waterline. They Should be placed square with the hull, with the top of the legs under the flat of the hull to offer stability.

Stands for Stern and/or Bow

The majority of sailboats need supports with vee tops to stop the vessel’s bow from dropping forward. There is only one real exception to this rule – if you have a full keel sailboat that does not have a heavy bow. If the stern has an excessive overhang, you will need two extra stands starboard and port.

Boat Stand Safety Chains

If you are using safety chains with sailboats, supports are placed in a position where the top of the stand is snug against the hull. 3/16-inch safety chains are placed at the special notch of those supports with the chain passed athwartship either under, after, or before the keel and to the starboard. The starboard supports are placed in their approximate position without being too snug against the hull, then you pull the chain tightly and place it into the starboard stands chain notch. Once it is snug in there; you can pull the starboard boat stands outboard until the chain is tight. You then tighten the stands' top, being sure that the rear legs run parallel to the boat’s hull. Using more safety chains, repeat this process for all sides to stop the boat stands from just sliding up the hull of the boat.

Keel Blocking Boat Stands

It is recommended that you use at least 2 blocking piles on stable and firm ground to take the weight of the boat. Each pile of blocking should have three blocks. This stops the blocks from sinking.

Commonly Asked Questions About Boat Stands 

Although it will depend on the particular boat stands you use, it is highly recommended that you don’t overload boat stands. Therefore, don’t expect a single boat stand to take more than 1,000-pounds. If you tried to make them, take more than that weight, the threads will gall, and it could damage not just the boat stands themselves but the boat.

Part of determining what the right boat stands are for your vessel means working on the right size you need. Remember, boat stands are designed to stabilize your vessel, while the keel blocking actually takes most of the weight of your boat. The simplest way to calculate the correct size would be to take the draft of your boat (in inches), then add the blocking pile height and then subtract roughly six inches.

In order to secure and hold your boat as safe as possible, it's crucial to have a professionally made boat stand. Unless you can fabricate and weld your own metal stand it is best to buy a boat stand.

Bow and stern lights. 7. Fishing seats, stands and recepticles are only a couple of years old. There is a center recepticle for a third seat. Running seats are removeable if you are fishing in non gas motor lakes or reservoirs for more room.8. Under the port gunnel, protected from the weather is an onboard battery charger which is set up to charge the two 12v batteries for the charging motor. Just plug it in and you are all set. Batteries are hidden behind driving seats enclosed with removable panels. Both charging motor batteries are about 18 months old.9. Trailer is registered homemade but actually a Sealion, tilt trailer. It has some surface rust but is completely structurally sound. New springs were replaced several years ago and tires last year.10.There is a new winch tower and a heavy duty winch that is two years old. Spare tire included.

2 British Seagull Long Shaft Outboard Boat Motors and Documentation

Both are 1980s Silver Model 90's EFNRL's (Long Shaft) - The British Seagull has been a long standing workhorse design that owners have loved for years. There is still support and parts readily available on-line, and these workhorse motors are easy to work on.  Everything you see in the photos pertaining to the motors is included except the motor stands. Motors garage stored when not being used. Model# EFNRL63G5 is the plastic tank, is a solid running motor, but hasn't been run for a couple years, it has always been hard to start at first, but after that it's a solid running motor. Model# EFNRL187HH3 is the metal tank, and needs the lower unit put back together (all parts are there to the best of my knowledge-see photos). Here are all the used EVs that qualify for a $4,000 tax credit

January 1, 2023, kicked off a fresh start of new tax credits for vehicles, both new and used. Since then, much of the dust has settled on the Capitol as it continues to implement qualifying terms for tax credits , continuously shifting what used EVs do and do not qualify. Here’s the latest list.

A used ev might be the way to go in 2024, how the current tax credit works for used evs, all-electric models, used plug-in hybrids evs that qualify for tax credits, other resources for ev tax credits.

Although the $7,500 federal tax credit has been extended for new EV purchases under revised qualifying terms, those current requirements leave a very limited the number of current EVs that qualify.

Many automakers are already pivoting their business strategies to move EV and battery assembly to US soil to once again qualify, but it will take time to establish those facilities and get them up and running.

In the meantime, it might be worth considering a used EV in order to take advantage of the revamped federal tax credit up to $4,000. Here’s how it works.

In a perfect world for consumers, any and all used EV purchases would qualify for tax credits from the US government, but that’s unfortunately not the case. As part of revised terms in the Inflation Reduction Act signed by President Biden, federal tax credits have been extended and include revamped benefits for used EV purchases. As long as they fit certain criteria. Per the IRS:

Beginning January 1, 2023, if you buy a qualified previously owned electric vehicle (EV) or fuel cell vehicle (FCV) from a licensed dealer for $25,000 or less, you may be eligible for a previously owned clean vehicle tax credit under Internal Revenue Code Section 25E.

Used EVs no see revised terms that offers a credit equal to 30% percent of the sale price (up to $4,000). That should help consumers like yourselves get some change back in your pocket at the end of the fiscal year. As long as you stick to these terms as  outlined by the IRS .

To qualify as a customer, you must:

• Be an individual who bought the vehicle for use and not for resale
• Must be an individual (no businesses)
• Not be the original owner
• Not be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return
• Not have claimed another used clean vehicle credit in the 3 years before the EV purchase date
• Modified adjusted gross income must not exceed $75k for individuals, $112,500 for heads of households, and $150k for joint returns

Additionally, in order for used EV to qualify for federal tax credits, it must:

• Have a sale price of $25,000 or less
• For example, a vehicle purchased in 2023 would need a model year of 2021 or older
• Not have already been transferred after August 16, 2022, to a qualified buyer
• Have a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 14,000 pounds
• Be an eligible FCV or plug-in EV with a battery capacity of least 7 kilowatt hours (kWh)
• Be for use primarily in the United States
• For qualified used EVs, the dealer reports required information to you at the time of sale and to the IRS
• A used vehicle qualifies for tax credit only once in its lifetime

As promised, here is the current list of used EVs that qualify for tax credits in the US, per the IRS, separated by all-electric BEVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

It’s important to note that this is not the end all, be all list of used EVs that qualify for tax credits in the US. Once again, per the IRS:

Manufacturers of the vehicles listed below have provided appropriate information and have indicated that the vehicles are eligible for the credit provided other requirements are met. 

This is simply the list provided by the government which will be continually updated by both them and us. Additionally, some of these EVs especially are 2021 or 2022 models, and it will be nearly impossible to find them on sale below $25k. While tax credits for used EVs are newly revamped and may be the way to go for you personally, there are plenty of other options to get money back from Uncle Sam at the end of the fiscal year.

For instance, revised terms outlined in the Inflation Reduction Act went into affect January 1, 2023 and enable the extension of federal tax credits for new EV purchases through the next decade, while once again allowing EVs from American automakers like Tesla and GM to once again qualify.

That being said, the capitol is still trying to settle a lot of these terms to determine what vehicles qualify, so things are a bit cloudy at the moment, but you may be able to take advantage of tax credits before battery assembly requirements kick in later this year.

There absolutely needs to be a VIN lookup to see if a vehicle 1) qualifies and 2) has had its credit used once per lifetime. Federal govt needs to put up a simple consumer facing web page that dealer and customer will use at purchase to ensure no surprises.

Whether it’s a new or used EV purchase that ends up being right for you, you may still be able to take advantage of additional perks at the state level, depending where you live. Credits, exemptions, and other benefits could be available for an EV purchase, lease, or for relevant equipment like home charger installation.

Footage of Kate Middleton hasn’t silenced the conspiracy theorists .

Skeptics and naysayers took to social media to express their disbelief shortly after photos of the Princess of Wales shopping with Prince William at a local farm stand this weekend were released.

“That ain’t Kate…” tweeted Bravo bigwig Andy Cohen on Monday.

“I’m am sorry but that’s not her,” tweeted another fan who added “#FakeKate” to her message.

“They should’ve just paid Steven Spielberg to fake a video of Kate because that TMZ video just made everything worse,” tweeted another , adding an image of Middleton snapped in 2023 and a grab of her from the farm stand video.

“That’s not the same person #KateGate #fakekate #KateMiddleton,” observed another who also shared split images.

In footage shared by the Sun , the future queen smiled as she briskly walked alongside the Prince of Wales while carrying a large shopping bag.

The eyewitness added, “The kids weren’t with them, but it’s such a good sign she was healthy enough to pop down to the shops.”

Middleton hadn’t been seen mingling in public since Christmas Day when she and her family attended church services. Weeks later, she underwent an unspecified abdominal surgery , and Kensington Palace announced she likely wouldn’t return to her duties until Easter.

She tried to connect with the public on Mother’s Day by sharing a photo of herself with her children, but experts determined it had been so heavily edited that several agencies issued a “kill notice.”

Middleton apologized for the botched photo shortly thereafter.

“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused,” she  wrote on X  from the official Prince and Princess of Wales account.

“I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C.”

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.
