exceptional excellence

Crafted with passion and expertise..

With two covered building halls and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Papenburg, we are one of the largest and most modern shipyards in the world with halls of 370 and 504 metres in length. Around 50 luxury vessels have left our shipyard – and the next vessels are already under construction.

We also benefit from the efforts of several partners who are involved in the construction of our ships and yachts. Our affiliates in the MEYER Group work alongside many external suppliers to have an extensive network for all kinds of requests.

We work closely with around 2,000 employees at our partner companies in day-to-day operations. This means the MEYER Group generates a total of 40,000 jobs in the shipbuilding and supply industry, as well as in various trades involved in operations in Germany, Finland and other European countries.

We know that our success is mainly due to our craftsmen and partner companies. That’s why we continue to promote cooperative partnerships and assume responsibility for people, the region and the environment. Lots of our employees are the third or fourth generation within their family to work at MEYER – they have known the MEYER spirit since childhood.

Freedom means

Responsibility., we build the yachts of tomorrow., for us, engineering therefore means sustainability..

At MEYER we strongly believe that we have a duty to build our products as environmentally friendly as possible. That’s why our specialist technicians and engineers are constantly working on the most advanced technologies that will make our yachts even more efficient and sustainable.

adobestock_120590281_small_web

The development of the LNG drive system for example has consolidated our position as the technological leader in the construction of cruise liners, and it’s also a huge incentive for us to continue our research.

Our objective is to build climate neutral yachts with alternative and renewable fuels – we’re putting all our passion and courage into the development of new ideas.

MEYER will also start testing fuel cells as the next milestone in the development of climate-neutral shipping solutions. Fuel cells are seen as the technology of the future. The concept is as simple as it is ingenious – hydrogen plus oxygen generates electricity and heat. Hydrogen is obtained from methanol, which can be produced sustainably from renewable energy sources. This means fuel cells operate without any harmful emissions – they only produce water vapour. The technology also reduces noise and vibration, which is an important requirement for yacht operations.

We look forward realizing

Your visions..

Meyer-Werft will ins Geschäft mit Luxusyachten einsteigen

Autor

(dpa)

MEYER YACHTS Unveiling – A look at the revolutionary concept at the Monaco Yacht Show

Luxury Service World

In the magnificent world of seafaring, MEYER YACHTS redefines luxury. After a spectacular presentation at the Monaco Yacht Show 2021, the brand sets sail again with an innovative concept that breaks the boundaries of traditional yacht building. With the launch of the THREE05, MEYER YACHTS enters a new chapter of luxurious living on the water, presenting a masterpiece of maritime architecture.

The origin of the vision

Over the years, the Monaco Yacht Show has established itself as the epicentre for superyacht enthusiasts and industry insiders. With her official launch in 2021 and a stand of her own the following year, MEYER YACHTS used this stage to introduce a revolutionary concept that will shape the maritime luxury landscape from 27 to 30 September .

Three models, one continuous innovation

With the ONE50 and TWO10 models, MEYER YACHTS has laid the foundation for its innovative line. However, the development of the THREE05 marks a turning point. This remarkable piece is a fusion of a 125-metre superyacht and a 180-metre Floating Solution. With this combination, the MEYER Group unites the two innovative business divisions MEYER YACHTS and MEYER Floating Solutions .

Incomparable architecture

“The idea behind this concept is multifaceted,” explains Thomas Weigend, Managing Director of MEYER WERFT . The dual structure of villa and yacht allows for larger parties to be accommodated, while the THREE05 can also be an extremely private retreat with its own superyacht shuttle. The technical specifications and amenities, such as the helipad and a private marina, take the THREE05 to a new level of luxury.

Environmentally conscious drive technology

The MEYER yacht is powered by environmentally friendly hybrid technology consisting of fuel cells and batteries. The solar cells and wind turbines installed on the Floating Solution, as well as the use of sustainable materials, underline MEYER’s ecological claim. “The combination of MEYER YACHTS and our extensive experience in building floating villas makes our offering truly unique in the world market,” emphasises Kaj Casén, CEO of MEYER Floating Solutions.

Emerald Sakara: A Jewel on the Oceans

A decisive step into the future.

The development of the THREE05 clearly shows how important the superyacht sector is for the MEYER Group. MEYER YACHTS will be present at the Monaco Yacht Show with a specialised team to inform visitors of all the options available, presenting both the THREE05 and ONE50 models.

Unmistakable market positioning

“Megayachts are a market segment that we can serve excellently at our shipyards,” says managing director Bernard Meyer. By entering this market and presenting innovative models, MEYER YACHTS has gained a distinct position in the industry. Interesting enquiries and the appreciation by relevant players testify to a successful market placement and a promising appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show.

NYK Cruises orders luxury ship from Meyer Werft

NYK Cruises orders luxury ship from Meyer Werft

Meyer Werft

By Rebecca Gibson | 01 April 2021

Japanese operator NYK Cruises has contracted Meyer Werft to construct an LNG-powered cruise ship, making the Germany shipbuilder the first shipyard in the world to receive a newbuild order since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

To be constructed at Meyer Werft’s site in Papenburg, the 51,950gt vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2025 and will be able to accommodate 744 guests and 470 crew members.

The luxury vessel was designed by Meyer Werft, with the entire design and negotiation process being conducted via video conferences with NYK Cruises. Design highlights will include onboard facilities tailored to suit the needs and preferences of Japanese guests, as well as an innovative air-conditioning systems and contactless controls to help minimise the spread of viruses. In addition, Meyer Werft will implement a hydrodynamics optimised for the vessel’s planned routes.

"We have been able to win our new customer from Japan in this extremely difficult global market situation and worldwide competition with the best ship concept, innovations, quality and a very challenging price for us,” said Jan Meyer, managing director of Meyer Werft. “My thanks go to the entire staff and especially to the sales and design department, which has done a great job in this tense phase. This is the first order in the shipyard's 226-year history where all contract documents and plans were prepared and negotiated via video conferencing. The effort has paid off.”

According to Meyer Werft, NYK Cruises’ order is a “very important step” in securing the future of its Papenburg yard in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The yard, which is designed to produce 420,000gt of tonnage annually, now has two ships with a collective tonnage of 182,000gt scheduled for delivery in 2025.

"The current newbuilding order is not a turnaround from our difficult situation; in Papenburg we are designed for the series production of very large cruise ships," said Meyer. "Now we are building the prototype of a small ship without the option of sister ships. Therefore, it is to be classified as another step among many necessary measures. At the same time, it is also a positive signal: it is a completely new customer for Meyer Werft, we have asserted ourselves on a global market against global competition."

The Shipyard

The Shipyard

For Those Who Love Ships

The Meyer Werft: Home of the World’s Largest Roofed Construction Dock

AIDA Nova cruise ship

A small German town on the river Ems hides one of Europe’s largest and most advanced shipyards – the  Meyer Werft . The shipyard, now in the hands of the seventh generation of the Meyer family, employs 3,450 people and produces four vessels per year on average. Everyone can see how ships come to life, as some 300,000 curious fans visit this fascinating place every year to walk the observation decks of the construction docks. Since its founding more than 200 years ago, the shipyard has built approximately 700 vessels of various types and sizes. But ships are not the only thing that the unassuming Saxon town churns out in staggering numbers. With entertainment being a major factor on board cruise ships, Meyer Werft just so happens to be Germany’s largest builder of theaters. Read on to find out what else this remarkable shipyard is best at.

Birth of a World-Class Shipbuilder

The Meyer Werft was founded in 1795 in Papenburg. The location was anything but random – the obscure town on the Ems had recently become a major procurement point in the Seven Years’ War, with one out of every four residents engaged in shipbuilding. The first wave of the industrial revolution soon after made wooden ships obsolete and paved the way for the company’s new fleet of steamers. It was 1860 when Joseph L. Meyer, taking over the business from his father, insisted that it was high time the shipyard turned to iron-hulled steamers. His vision for the future was met with skepticism by the citizens of Papenburg, many insisting that iron would never float in water. Dismissing the anecdotal evidence supplied, Joseph went on with his plans and in 1873 saw to the construction of Meyer Werft’s first three iron merchant vessels. Two years later, the shipyard delivered its first iron passenger ship, the  Triton . In the recession years that followed, while many other shipyards were closing down, numerous steel ships emerged from the Meyer Werft, amongst them the famous steamers  Prinz Heinrich  and  Graf Goetzen .

The Triton ship

Between the two world wars, the shipyard specialized in fishing steamers, pilot boats, lightships, as well as coastal cruisers. After the Second World War and up to the end of the 1970s, the shipyard shifted its focus to gas tankers, RoRo ferries, container ships, and various other merchant vessels.

The Rise of the Mega Cruise Ship

Meyer only made its first steps in the luxury cruise liners in the 1980s – a surprising fact, considering the company’s current reputation in this sector. The first to come out of this new venture was the  Homeric . She was launched in 1985 and delivered to her owner Home Lines in just two years – a record construction time for a vessel 204 m long, 19 m wide, and with gross tonnage of 47,000 GT. She could accommodate 1,132 passengers in her 552 cabins. With the success of the  Homeric , Meyer Werft made a notable debut in the difficult and technically demanding cruise ship industry. In the 35 years that followed, it built more than 40 cruise ships, each one larger and more technologically impressive than the previous.

Launching of the Homeric, 28 September 1985

A look at one of the more recent gems of the Meyer Werft – the beautiful  AIDAnova  – can give us a good idea how much cruise ships have grown in size since the 1980s. With gross tonnage of 183,858 GT, the  AIDAnova  is nearly four times larger than the  Homeric  and also the largest passenger ship built in Germany to date. She has a length of 337 m, a beam of 42 m, and can take six times more passengers in her cabins than Meyer’s first cruise ship. But the  AIDAnova  is not a milestone for the Papenburg shipyard based on size alone. She is the first cruise ship in the world to be powered entirely by liquefied natural gas (LNG) – a novel source of propulsion with reduced emissions.

AIDAnova sea trials

Another recent curiosity that came out of the Meyer Weft is the  World Dream , completed in 2017. Designed to cater to the Asian cruise market, she offers lavish interior design and an extensive range of entertainment options. But what makes her curious are the two four-seat, deep-sea submarines on board, ready to take the more adventurous passengers 200 m beneath the surface of the ocean. She is also the first cruise ship to carry an MRI scanner on board, although how this should enhance your spa experience, remains a mystery to me!

Facilities and Logistics

To meet the constant demand for bigger vessels and stay competitive with other shipbuilders in the market, Meyer Werft’s had no choice but to keep expanding its facilities. In 1987, the company opened the largest roofed construction dock of its time. The hall measured 270 m in length, 101.5 m in width, and 60 m in height. A few years later, additional 100 m were added to the hall’s length, with the construction dock inside now reaching 358 m. A second roofed construction hall was built ten years later – 384 m long, 125 m wide, and 75 m high. In 2007, construction began to extend the second hall to 504 m in length, the dock inside reaching 362 m – a new world record.

Norwegian Encore at one of Meyer Werft's giant roofed docks

All areas of activity in the shipyard are equipped with the latest computer technology – from design to construction and manufacturing. The old process of building from blueprints has long been replaced by computer models. In fact, almost the entire manufacturing process is now digitized, meaning that ships can be planned virtually, and the assembly processes can be tested in advance. 3D simulation allows engineers to experiment with numerous ideas and assess their feasibility at the earliest planning stages. The result is fewer construction errors, leading to production efficiency, as well as savings of both time and costs.

Computer-based models are also the foundation of the giant shipyard’s logistical system, minimizing storage space and operating costs. A material-flow control system monitors everything that enters and leaves the shipyard, ensuring that each component of the ship is at the right place at the right time.

Block Construction

Ships at the Meyer Weft are assembled with the latest block-construction techniques. This means that small parts are first prefabricated and assembled into larger units. Individual steel plates are coated with corrosion protection, cut to size, and welded together to form panels, the entire process happening in an automated panel line. The cut steel plates are joined with different profiles, beams, and side walls, to form sections, to which piping and electrical wiring is then mounted. Approximately eight to ten such sections form one block, with about 70 of these blocks making up one complete cruise ship. Once the blocks are ready, their steel plates are welded together, also joining their cables and pipes, to give shape to the new ship.

Meyer Werft's Laser Center

The Meyer Werft is home to Europe’s largest laser center, used for steel cutting and welding. In addition, eight floor-mounted lasers ensure the precise alignment of blocks in the construction dock, indicating even the smallest unevenness. Detectors in the ceiling above monitor the position of the laser beams in relation to the block being adjusted, transmitting the data to a computer, on which engineers monitor the precision. When all lasers are aligned to perfection with their target block position, joining of the blocks may start. This newly developed system allows for faster and more precise assembly of the blocks.

Nothing is Impossible

Take your pick – whether you want two submarines and an MRI scanner on board, or you prefer your ship to run on a new type of fuel, whether you need a modest freighter or a floating amusement park, the Meyer Werft is well prepared to accommodate your visions and desires. Past decades have shown it again and again – this is one shipyard that knows no limits and is not afraid to be the first.

‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold

P ODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents throughout Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left without heating when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

Heating issues have affected residents in the Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as people in the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and more.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, the authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in heating bills paid by residents, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. According to investigators, the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the heating payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure in Russia which have been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.

Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.

In St. Petersburg, residents regularly complain about extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks, with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.

In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated communication systems.

In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, residents affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she added.

New modification of Russian VVER-440 fuel loaded at Paks NPP in Hungary

DECEMBER 14, 2020 — After the recent refueling at power unit 3 of the Hungarian Paks NPP, its VVER-440 reactor has been loaded with a batch of fresh fuel including 18 fuel bundles of the new modification. The new fuel will be introduced at all four operating power units of the Paks NPP, and the amount of new-modification bundles in each refueling will be increased gradually.

Development of the new VVER-440 fuel modification was completed in 2020 under the contract between TVEL JSC and MVM Paks NPP Ltd. Its introduction would optimize the hydro-uranium ratio in the reactor core, enabling to increase the efficiency of fuel usage and advance the economic performance of the power plant operation. All VVER-440 fuel modifications are manufactured at the Elemash Machine-Building Plant, a facility of TVEL Fuel Company in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

Paks Nuclear Power Plant

“Introduction of a new fuel is an option to improve technical and economic performance of a nuclear power plant without substantial investment. We are actively engaged in development of new models and modifications of VVER-440 fuel for power plants in Europe. The projects of the new fuels for Loviisa NPP in Finland, Dukovany NPP in the Czech Republic, Mochovce and Bohunice NPPs in Slovakia, are currently at various stages of implementation. Despite the same reactor model, these projects are quite different technically and conceptually, since we take into account the individual needs and requirements of our customers,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

For reference:

The project of development and validation of the new fuel has been accomplished with participation of a number of Russian nuclear industry enterprises, such as OKB Gidropress (a part of Rosatom machine-building division Atomenergomash), Bochvar Institute (material science research facility of TVEL Fuel Company), Elemash Machine-building plant and Kurchatov Institute national research center. At the site of OKB Gidropress research and experiment facility, the new fuel passed a range of hydraulic, longevity and vibration tests.

Paks NPP is the only functioning nuclear power plant in Hungary with total installed capacity 2000 MWe. It operates four similar units powered by VVER-440 reactors and commissioned one by one in 1982-1987. Currently, Paks NPP is the only VVER-440 plant in the world operating in extended 15-monthes fuel cycle. The power plant produces about 15 bln kWh annually, about a half of electric power generation in Hungary. In 2018, the project of increasing the duration of Paks NPP fuel cycle won the European competition Quality Innovation Award in the nomination “Innovations of large enterprises”. Russian engineers from TVEL JSC, Kurchatov Institute, OKB Gidropress, Bochvar Institute and Elemash Machine-building plant provided assistance to the Hungarian colleagues in accomplishment of the project.

TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom incorporates enterprises for the fabrication of nuclear fuel, conversion and enrichment of uranium, production of gas centrifuges, as well as research and design organizations. It is the only supplier of nuclear fuel for Russian nuclear power plants. TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom provides nuclear fuel for 73 power reactors in 13 countries worldwide, research reactors in eight countries, as well as transport reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world operates on fuel manufactured by TVEL.  www.tvel.ru
