LIONHEART yacht is a 90-metre (295 ft) motor yacht built by Benetti in Italy. She was delivered in July of 2016 to the current owner who recently sold his brands Topshop and Selfridges, gaining him a net worth of US $2.4 billion.

LIONHEART yacht interior

The LIONHEART yacht features a lot of intricate details in its design that make her stand out from other comparable vessels on the market.

The interior of this yacht had exceptionally high-quality materials used in her construction, which gives her an elegant look and feel throughout all the different spaces on board.

The design house Green & Mingarelli is responsible for the luxurious interior design of LIONHEART.

The LIONHEART yacht can welcome 12 guests in her six cabins as well as a crew of 30 members of staff.

The interior of the yacht features a beach club, a beauty salon as well as expansive health and wellness facilities that include a spa, a hairdressing salon, a gym with a personal trainer, and a massage room with a masseur available at all hours.

The different floors of the yacht are connected by an elevator, and of course, the yacht has several pools, two of which are located on the upper decks.

A grand staircase is situated in the center of the yacht, which gives the vessel the likeness of a luxury hotel. The interior is furnished with exclusive furniture with dark wood and cream upholstery.

The yacht features several sizable chandeliers and other extravagant lighting fixtures. Everything about the interior of LIONHEART is lavish and luxurious, flaunting the US $150 Million price tag that this incredible vessel bears.

Specifications

The LIONHEART yacht is 90 meters (296 ft) long with a beam of 14.4 meters (47.3 ft) and a draft of 7.5 meters (24.9 ft). She was built by Benetti Yachts in Livorno, Italy, and launched in 2016.

At the time, LIONHEART was Benetti’s flagship and the largest yacht they had ever produced, overtaking NABILA (later TRUMP PRINCESS owned by Donald Trump).

Her gross tonnage lies at 2,990 GT, reaching cruising speeds of 15 knots and maximum speeds of 16 knots.

She is definitely not the fastest yacht in her size category, but her caterpillar engines are reliable and robust.

LIONHEART has an immense aluminum superstructure, and her hull was constructed from premium steel. Her traditional teak decks nicely contrast her white exterior.

The LIONHEART yacht is values at US $150 million and has annual running costs of US $10-$15 Million. She is not currently available for charter or for sale, although Green’s other yachts are.

The exterior of the LIONHEART yacht was designed by Stefano Natucci, who was also responsible for LIONESS V, Green’s previous yacht by Benetti.

Natucci has designed a total of 45 yachts, the LIONHEART yacht being the largest of his past projects.

The yacht is fitted with a sophisticated stabilizer system that ensures a comfortable experience for guests when at anchor or underway. She has a total of four decks featuring generous outdoor spaces.

The front of the bow has room for a small helipad where aircraft can land to pick up or drop off guests.

The top deck has an outdoor bar and jacuzzi, and behind the flybridge, there is a large pool.

All decks have luxurious outdoor seating with cream upholstery which is also the color of the crew uniforms aboard the LIONHEART yacht.

At the aft, the yacht has a sizable beach club and extendable swimming platform where water toys can be launched.

She also has several smaller, shaded decks with ample space for dining or parties. On both her port and starboard sides, Lionheart has small balcony decks which are attached to two of the suites.

Toys and equipment

The LIONHEART yacht carries several tenders, although her most memorable is a VanDutch 55 named Lioncub.

This tender has a black and white photograph of a lion painted on its side, making it stand out from traditional tenders and attracting yacht spotters.

LIONHEART also has a Pascoe Limousine, a Pascoe Beachlande, and a Pascoe Outboard Shuttle giving her passengers a wide selection of transportation options for shore leave or excursions.

Although exact details aren’t known, the yacht carries a large number of water toys, including jet skis and water bobs.

With a large swimming platform at the back of the vessel and an attached beach club with a lounge area, a luxury that might be desired is available to her guests.

Additional information

Construction for LIONHEART began in 2012 after the owner Green commissioned his third yacht from Benetti .

The two previous vessels were also named LIONHEART but have since been renamed LUMIERE and LIONESS V.

LUMIERE was built in 1999 and has a length of 49.9 meters (164 ft). Green sold her when he obtained LIONHEART V in 2006, and she is now available for charter.

LIONESS V has a length of 63.5 meters (208 ft) and was replaced by LIONHEART in 2016, 10 years after her launch.

Interestingly all three vessels can welcome the same number of guests, and only their amenities and length changed over the years.

LIONESS V is still owned by the Green family, more specifically Tina Green. This yacht is available for charter.

Superyacht Lionheart - Worlds Largest J-Class Launched

By B. Roberts

The stunning super J-Class yacht Lionheart, recently launched by Dutch shipyard Claasen Jachtbouw, has been announced for sale with joint agents YPI Brokerage and Hoek.

Standing at 44m long with an astonishing overhang of 17m, Lionheart is the largest J-Class in the world. YPI Brokerage, the sales and new construction division of the Monaco based Yachting Partners International, have signed Lionheart for sale alongside Hoek Brokerage.

William Bishop, YPI broker and head of the YPI sailing division, said “This is an amazing moment … Lionheart is quite simply stunning. Anyone who loves sailing is already aware of the philosophy, the history, the technology and the passion that has gone into the construction of Lionheart. That’s what makes this the beginning of a whole new era of J-Class yachting.”

Built to compete at the highest level, Lionheart was originally designed for the Ranger Syndicate by Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens in 1936. Her design was then extensively evaluated and optimised by the Hoek Naval Architects to ensure the highest quality of racing.

“And she is just as much designed for cruising as she is racing,” Will points out. “She has been built to MCA Classification and incorporates two small deckhouses and two small cockpits for the owner and his/her guests – that gives extra versatility on how the yacht can be used whether racing or cruising.”

Alongside her expert construction, her racing capabilities benefitted from the wealth of experience added to the project by Hall Spars in the building of her spars as well as utilising Harkens proven Carbon winches.

William Bishop added “Lionheart is very competitively price … She represents a unique opportunity today for an owner looking for performance but with the added versatility of an intelligent cruising configuration. Lionheart is a new breed of J-Class and we are very proud to be representing her for sale alongside Hoek Brokerage.”

Lionheart is for sale through YPI Brokerage at an Asking Price of €14,900,000.

"She represents a unique opportunity today for an owner looking for performance but with the added versatility of an intelligent cruising configuration." William Bishop, YPI Broker

Lionheart was actually based on a project called F-77, which was commissioned by Harold Vanderbilt, but never built. Instead, Vanderbilt won the 1930s America’s Cup with another boat called Enterprise . By reaching back into the annals of yachting history, Lionheart ’s designers determined that F-77 was the fastest of the original group that Vanderbilt had commissioned. When launched in 2010, Lionheart won its first race, the Kings 100 Guineas Cup in Cowes. The yacht then won three regattas in 2014, and several UK events in 2015. At 142 feet 5 inches, the boat was the largest of the J Class (until Svea was launched last year) and certainly one of the most beautiful, with its jet-black hull and low-riding profile. Some say Lionheart looks like a cross between a superyacht and a J Class yacht. It has the saloon and staterooms to put it in the superyacht category. Either way, the vessel is a fitting tribute to the Vanderbilt yacht that never was.

Sir Philip Green’s super-yacht quarantined in Monaco over coronavirus outbreak

Lionheart_Monaco_2017

The $150 million and 90-meter-long super-yacht Lionheart has been docked at Monaco’s Port Hercule for over a week. Two crew members tested positive for coronavirus.

The impressive luxury vessel belongs to Sir Philip Green, British billionaire and owner of Topshop, and his wife Lady Tina Green, who is a Monaco resident. The Lionheart is the biggest yacht ever built by historic Italian yacht-maker Benetti and was bought by Sir Philip Green for an estimated 150 million dollars. The yacht has space for 16 crew members and can welcome up to 12 people.

At the time, the purchase of this yacht raised public concern in the United Kingdom. The supe-yacht was bought by Green one year after the British tycoon sold BHS clothing stores to a little-known investor for £1.

Philip Green’s retail business has been hard-hit by the pandemic and in April it was announced that he had taken government money to pay for staff during the Coronavirus lockdown. Over the last 4 years, his wealth has drastically diminished. Forbes estimates that from $5,9 billion in 2016, Philip and Tina Green are now worth a “mere” $2,2 billion.

Coronavirus outbreak on board

“After maintenance in Italy, the boat returned to Monaco. We were meant to go on a cruise with my family. It was my responsibility to have the whole crew tested before leaving. We then discovered two cases — one asymptomatic and the other with a sore throat. The two have been confined to the cabin ever since,” Lady Tina Green told the local newspaper Monaco Mati n . She added that everyone was well.

According to Monaco Matin , 14 boats have now been asked to quarantine by Monaco’s government since the start of the pandemic . Their status is indicated by a yellow flag hoisted on the mast. The Lionheart question should be solved quickly enough. According to local media, all of the new tests conducted on the yacht’s crew at the beginning of the week came back negative.

Lionheart is the first modern replica J Class to be built in aluminium and was launched in July 2010. The original owner who commissioned JH1 was a repeat client of Andre Hoek who had then simply sought to build the fastest J Class yet.

Hoek developed their own VPP (velocity prediction program) software to analyse all the existing J Class designs before CFD and traditional tank testing with 6 metre long models. Hoek identified the J Class Ranger as outstanding from a family of seven Burgess and Stephens designs which were originally submitted to Harold Vanderbilt in 1936, and it was this design that was used for Lionheart.

The design showed exceptional promise as a very good all-rounder, fast on all points of sail in light, medium and heavy winds. Designed at 43.4m she was to be the longest on the waterline at the time.

In terms of deck and rig hardware, Lionheart fully utilised modern superyacht and grand prix race yacht technology where appropriate, significantly moving forwards J Class construction and specification using the most powerful winches and hydraulic systems available to optimise sail handling and trimming, keep all up weight down and to deal with the high rig loads.

Lionheart is the first J Class to have adopted a double cockpit layout with a private owners’ cockpit and deckhouse aft of the wheel and, forward of the wheel, a large guest cockpit leading to the main companionway and deckhouse. This allows the working area of the boat to be separated from the guests, improves communications between the afterguard and allows more of the working crew to work inside a cockpit rather than on the deck.

True to that original promise, Lionheart has been the standout performer on the race course since she was launched. From 2014 when they won in Menorca, Palma and Sardinia until 2017 when she won the seven boat J Class Superyacht Regatta and the J Class America’s Cup in Bermuda, followed by the inaugural J Class World Championship in Newport RI.

Then under the guidance of tactician Bouwe Bekking, the Lionheart project evolved to the highest level thanks to their desire to improve as a team. Each regatta saw Lionheart make comprehensive daily briefings and debriefings, they optimised their performance package and trained hard as a team. And over the years the owner became one of the most accomplished, competitive helms in the fleet. Bekking retained key core crew from the Brunel round the world race programme he skippered.

Lionheart has cruised extensively since 2017 and was expected to return to the race course in 2023 before their plans were put on hold.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — It was 10 years after the death of their father that associates of filmmaker Laura Brownson brought her an article to read about the late Dan Wheldon.

Standing below the monument on Dan Wheldon Way along the downtown St. Petersburg race course that honors the late two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, his two pre-teen sons were named junior development drivers at Andretti Global in their own bid to follow the father they barely knew.

Wheldon was 33 when he was killed in a horrific crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway just five months after winning his second Indy 500 title. His son, Oliver, was an infant riding in his mother’s arms on the victory lap. Sebastian, who has home videos as a toddler with his father, was not yet 3 but kissed the bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway alongside the beloved British racer.

Wheldon was a popular, funny, confident character in the IndyCar community and his death rocked the entire series. No one was more devastated than his widow, Susie, who 10 years later was still grieving and yet willing to let her boys follow their father’s career path.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner is flanked by his wife Geri Alliwell after the Formula One Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, in Jedda, Saudi Arabia, Saturday, March 9, 2024. (AP Photo/Giuseppe Cacace/Pool)

Brownson, a mother of two sons herself, in that article immediately found her next project.

“When I read that, I was like ‘OK, this is not a story just about a racecar driver,’” Brownson told The Associated Press. “It’s about fulfilling legacy, it’s about grief and love and loss and all those universal themes. Sure, it’s a story about Dan. But it’s a story about Susie and her boys, too.”

The result is “The Lionheart” documentary that had screenings at the Tribeca Festival and won awards at the Heartland International Film Festival and the Key West Film Festival. It was shown to an IndyCar-invited audience in St. Petersburg ahead of the season-opening race weekend — St. Pete was where the Wheldons made their home starting in 2005 — and makes its wide debut Tuesday night on HBO and streamed on Max.

It’s an emotional documentary that leans on archival footage to follow Wheldon’s career while interlaying Susie’s struggles as a single mother trying to navigate the careers of her sons in a high-risk sport. The film includes private moments with Susie and the boys, who at times find the constant reminiscing “too intense” and express their resentment at being the only racers at the track who don’t have a father on hand to help them hone their craft.

Sebastian is now 15 and a moody teenager, while Oliver is a few weeks shy of 13, and Susie packed them up and moved them to Miami so they’d be closer to Homestead-Miami Speedway and near-daily track days.

Sebastian wants to relocate to Europe and climb the ladder system there before returning to the United States to become an IndyCar driver. Oliver also wants to be an IndyCar driver. Both brothers, who are typically sold as a package deal to sponsors, think the Indy 500 is the greatest event in the world and want their chance to win like their dad.

Susie just shrugs about where she’s headed next. She’s committed to her sons and giving them their chance to follow their father.

“It was never in my mind that I would deny them that, ever,” Susie Wheldon said. “I knew from an early point that if they ever wanted to do that, I would at least give them the opportunity. I don’t want the story to die at the end of Dan’s accident.”

Out of sensitivity to their own grief processing, AP contained most of the questions to the boys about racing and not the movie and their father. Sebastian did acknowledge he learned nothing new about his father from the movie.

Sebastian now competes in USF Juniors, a jump up after winning the Skip Barber championship last year. Oliver is now racing in Skip Barber, one year ahead of when Sebastian made the leap, but the multiple kart champion scored two podiums in his first race weekend earlier this month at Sebring International Speedway.

They are competitive with one another, but the age difference between them gives them enough separation that they aren’t yet competing against each other. Represented by their father’s agent, Adrian Sussman, Sebastian is already picking up some of his father’s habits and has been put on a “five phone calls a day limit” by Sussman, who used to be bombarded by Dan’s desire to be involved in every decision.

They acknowledge their father’s legacy drew them into racing, but they are determined to make the Wheldon name their own.

“I think it’s just part of our family,” Oliver said. “I just love it. I love the speed. I love the racing. It’s just all we know and love.”

And Sebastian said he’s long learned to tune-out the expectations on him of being Dan Wheldon’s son.

“The pressure comes from just being a racecar driver. It bothered me at one point,” Sebastian said. “Like, everybody had an expectation. You stop caring about that.”

Brownson said the documentary is much bigger than a racing film and should appeal to a wide audience.

“The story is for people who are drawn to larger themes of sort of familial legacy, love loss, risk taking, all of those things. You don’t have to like motor sports to relate to Susie as a parent,” she said. “And the boys, when they get behind the wheel, they are the closest to their father that they could possibly feel. That’s how they get to know and understand him.”
