When it comes to dreamy wedding venues, few can rival the timeless allure of a yacht club. The gleaming waters, the gentle sway of boats, and the nautical charm create an atmosphere of romance and sophistication like no other. In the heart of Tacoma, Washington, lies a gem that epitomizes this elegance: the Tacoma Yacht Club. Picture-perfect in its setting, this yacht club recently hosted a wedding that left everyone enchanted. A classic white and gold theme brought a touch of timeless glamour to the waterfront, making it an affair to remember.

Photos by Shantel Wall Photography

The Tacoma Yacht Club, nestled along the picturesque shores of the Puget Sound, boasts breathtaking waterfront views and a sense of grandeur that perfectly suits the occasion. As guests arrived at the venue, they were greeted by the sight of majestic yachts moored in the harbor, their polished hulls glistening in the afternoon sun. The Tacoma Yacht Club served as the ideal backdrop for the wedding of Kasey and Brian.

The bride and groom, Kasey and Brian, had a vision for their big day: classic elegance with a touch of opulence. And what better way to achieve this than through a classic white and gold color palette with hints of green?

Kasey looked nothing short of ethereal in her wedding gown. The A-line silhouette and a flowing train exuded an air of grace and refinement. Her veil, a cascade of sheer tulle with flower details and small pearls, completed the look, making her the picture of bridal elegance.

Brian, the dashing groom, was the perfect complement to Kasey's radiant beauty. He wore a classic tan tuxedo, accented with a crisp white shirt and a gold silk bow tie.

The floral arrangements were a feast for the eyes, blending seamlessly with the white and gold theme. Creamy white roses and hydrangeas took center stage. The result was a display of floral opulence that adorned the venue, from the ceremony arch to the reception tables.

Kasey and Brian's love story began in a way that could only be described as fate. They met on an airplane when Brian, chivalrous as ever, traded seats with a young girl so she could sit next to her dad. Little did Brian know that this simple act of kindness would lead to a serendipitous encounter.

As the flight continued, Kasey, ended up falling asleep on Brian's shoulder. In that quiet moment, as the airplane soared through the skies, destiny worked its magic. When they disembarked, Brian and Kasey exchanged numbers, and from there, their love story began to unfold. The rest, as they say, is history. Here we are today, celebrating their wedding!

The couple exchanged vows on the lawn overlooking the tranquil waters. An elegant floral arch framed them as they pledged their love to each other. The sparkling Puget Sound served as the most enchanting backdrop, reflecting the pure, unending love that Kasey and Brian shared.

As the sun began to set, the celebration moved indoors to a ballroom adorned with white and gold decor. The tables were dressed in crisp white linens with gold accents, creating a regal atmosphere. Each place setting featured gold-rimmed china and crystal glassware, a testament to the attention to detail that went into every aspect of the wedding.

The speeches and toasts, filled with laughter and heartfelt sentiments, underscored the love and support surrounding the newlyweds. Then it was time to dance the night away. The DJ played a mix of classic and contemporary hits, ensuring that everyone had a chance to join in the celebration.

For couples seeking an exquisite yacht wedding experience in Tacoma, the Tacoma Yacht Club offers a dreamy venue. Our classic white and gold-themed wedding not only combines timeless elegance with opulence but also provides a picturesque waterfront setting. Ideal for those searching for yacht weddings in Tacoma, this blog unveils the enchantment of Kasey and Brian's special day while highlighting the Tacoma Yacht Club as the perfect location to host your own yacht wedding. If you're planning your big day on the water, read on to discover how this couple's love story took flight and how their wedding day became an unforgettable journey, just as yours can.

A Timeless Winter Yacht Club Wedding in Fort Lauderdale

Katie trethewey and charlie arndall.

After getting engaged at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida, Katie Trethewey and Charlie Arndall began planning their dream wedding. Though they had to postpone for a year due to the pandemic, their winter wedding at a yacht club in Fort Lauderdale, the city where they reside, was well worth the wait.

Wanting to look back on their photos forever and never grow tired of the selected wedding style, Katie and Charlie chose a timeless, traditional theme for their nuptials at the sophisticated waterfront venue. In keeping with the design scheme, their 210 guests received a classic invitation suite featuring letterpress printing, an elegant floral motif, and a custom map of the destination on navy stationery, setting the tone for the pops of navy blue to come.

On the day of the ceremony, loved ones gathered at a Catholic church decorated with collections of greenery tied with white ribbon at the end of pews, as well as garden-style florals in ivory accented with fresh verdure atop acrylic stands. The bride – who was gorgeous in a classic off-the-shoulder, long-sleeve gown and wore her hair in long, voluminous curls – walked down the aisle on the arm of her father to meet her groom, who donned a navy tuxedo.

“We never left each other’s side [and] have so many special moments together.”

Following the vow exchange, the newlyweds and their loved ones reconvened at the stately yacht club for the festivities. As most of their guests were traveling to Florida for the wedding, “we wanted to make sure that everyone felt welcome,” shares Katie of their overarching goal when planning the celebration. Friends and family enjoyed a poolside cocktail hour before entering the reception ballroom.

Long rectangular tables and round varieties were covered with sleek grey linens and surrounded by clear-back chairs with crisp ivory cushions, befitting the timeless grey-and-white color palette . Centerpieces showcased high and low arrangements of all-white blooms with accents of fresh greenery, and each guest’s place setting included a silver-rimmed charger plate topped with a white napkin, navy blue menu card detailing the multi-course menu, and calligraphed place cards in the same rich hue.

The day was exactly what the couple envisioned for their timeless celebration, and the bride offers two pieces of advice to couples – the first from her grandmother, who was married 52 years, and the second from her and Charlie. “Enjoy being engaged – you will be married for the rest of your lives. This season of life goes by quickly, so enjoy!” she shares. Also, “On the day of your wedding, try to spend as much time together… We never left each other’s side [and] have so many special moments together.”

A Classic, White-Tie Wedding At The New York Yacht Club in Newport, Rhode Island

CAROLINA SÄVE AND BRYAN NATALE

AUGUST 23, 2014 IN NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

While studying at his law school’s library, Bryan Natale pointed out a beautiful blonde to his friend, but made no move to meet her. A few days later, the friend called saying that the woman was at the first-year student mixer and Bryan should get down there and introduce himself—which is exactly what he did.

classic yacht club wedding

“I’m from Sweden,” says Carolina Säve, “and I was very impressed when Bryan mentioned he had studied in my country.” So much so, that she boldly asked him for his phone number. The couple bonded over their love of food and travel, with Bryan endearing himself through small, thoughtful gestures. “A month into being with him, I knew he was right for me,” says Carolina. It was a lock when Carolina’s mom, critical of past boyfriends, gave Bryan her seal of approval.

“…HOW CAROLINA AND I WENT DOWN MANY PATHS TO EVENTUALLY FIND EACH OTHER MADE ME REALIZE HOW FORTUNATE WE ARE.”

classic yacht club wedding

On a trip to Nantucket, Bryan seemed unusually nervous while relaxing on the beach. He began telling Carolina about how much he loved her, and when she opened her eyes, he was on one knee with the ring extended. She said, “Yes,” and moments later, a seal waddled out of the surf and waved at the couple. “People joke that Bryan paid the seal to show up, and I tell them that it ‘sealed the deal’ for me,”kids Carolina.

classic yacht club wedding

Because sailing was an integral part of Carolina’s childhood, the historic New York Yacht Club in Newport, Rhode Island, felt “just right” to the bride. The ceremony was held on the oceanside lawn overlooking all of Newport. In a move that was kept secret from everyone, including Bryan, the bride and her father arrived by boat. Their walk to the altar was accompanied by a string quartet.

classic yacht club wedding

Rites were recited in English and Swedish so international guests, including Carolina’s grandmother, could follow along. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the flower girls serenaded the couple with a Swedish “summer” song.

The reception employed many Swedish traditions, starting with white tie and tails for the wedding party. Seating, at long tables stemming from the head table, was arranged to ensure that people meet each other. “You mix everyone up,” says Carolina. “You don’t get to sit with your spouse or college buddies.”

classic yacht club wedding

Carolina and Bryan danced a traditional waltz to “Edelweiss” for their first dance, followed by a three-hour, four-course dinner. The meal was accompanied by a multitude of speeches managed by two toastmasters. “Sitting back and absorbing the stories about how Carolina and I went down many paths to eventually find each other made me realize how fortunate we are,” says Bryan. Dancing began after dinner and continued until the 11 p.m. curfew. Then, the newlyweds walked a sparkler-lined aisle to a boat that ferried them to the continuing party at Newport’s Forty 1° North.

The honeymoon began with an exciting helicopter ride over sparkling blue waters to Azura Benguerra Island in Mozambique, where the couple recovered from their whirlwind of entertaining. After resting up, Carolina and Bryan flew to South Africa and checked off a bucket list item with two safaris filled with “amazing” wild animal sightings.

After the honeymoon, Bryan and Carolina returned to their home in Boston where they both practice law.

Giordana & Daniel’s Classic & Simple Sandringham Yacht Club Wedding

classic yacht club wedding

Giordana & Daniel

We simply adore this classic and simple Sandringham Yacht Club wedding! Complete with fresh white and green bouquets, an elegant Mariana Hardwick gown and the Melbourne sunset of our DREAMS, every moment is divine.  Perla Photography  captured the day.

Giordana and Daniel met through the bride’s cousin, who was also a close friend of the groom. After a slow burn romance, the couple fell in love and the rest, as they say, is history! The bride shares how Daniel made it forever, telling, ”Daniel proposed to me on vacation in Koh Samui, Thailand in 2016. Whilst being led down to our private villa, I walked into the room first to find 32 roses (one for each month spent together) and a ring on the bed. Daniel dropped to one knee, and of course, the answer was ‘yes!’.”

classic yacht club wedding

Wanting a simple, elegant and and classic day, the bride chose a made-to-measure  Mariana Hardwick  gown. She shares, ”I chose the gown for its simplicity. After having tried on a number of dresses at a number of stores I picked a dress that I really liked and decided was the one. However, when I went back a few weeks later to try the dress on again and process the order, I saw ‘the dress’ newly displayed on the mannequin behind in the mirror reflection and immediately changed my mind. I tried the dress on once and put through the order on the same day without any hesitation. The staff and designers at Mariana Hardwick were all so helpful through the whole process and made the experience so special. I am fortunate to have had my Nonna’s engagement ring given to me when she passed. I wore this on our wedding day as my something old.” The groom and groomsmen wore  Peter Jackson  navy suits with a black bow tie, white pocket square and black patent leather shoes.

classic yacht club wedding

Family played a large part in Giordana and Daniel’s day, with their favourite photos taken being of their grandparents. Of the venue for the ceremony, the bride tells, ”We chose Star Of The Sea College Chapel.  I went to school there and always believed the chapel to be so amazing with its stained glass windows. We wanted to have a Catholic wedding however both felt it quite overwhelming to get married in a large church we both didn’t know or recognise. The chapel was both small and intimate, and somewhere I had a connection to. I was walked down the aisle by both my mum and dad to Hearts and Colors version of ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’. We wanted the ceremony to be short and sweet and we didn’t write any of our own vows.” The couple included several readings from the Bible, along with Prayers of the Faithful, read by family members.

classic yacht club wedding

Continuing the classic and elegant theme, the bride chose white flowers with greenery. She shares, ”Our flowers were done by Debbie O’Neill . The bridesmaids’ bouquets where the exact same as the brides except smaller. We had two vases of flowers at the altar of the chapel. The same style and flowers were used throughout the whole wedding. Debbie did a phenomenal job, I could not have ever imagined them to be so beautiful, particularly with the bridal bouquet. She went above and beyond on the day and made the venue look amazing. She included my favourite flower (tulips) on the bridal table and cake table, none of which I asked for.”

classic yacht club wedding

Along with simple and gorgeous, Giordana and Daniel wanted their day to be fun and were thrilled with how it was captured. The bride shares, ”We chose Perla Photography to be our wedding photographer and it was one of the best decisions that we made. Perla display such simple yet beautiful photography, showing not only the bride and groom but candid photos of the guests. We wanted our photos natural and light-hearted and that is exactly what Perla captured for us. Having such a big group of guests, we made sure to have more than one photographer so we could have photos of the guests throughout the day and night. We didn’t only want photos of ourselves. Perla Photography  and Carl TV  both made the day feel fun and stress free. There were moments when we forgot they were there filming. It all felt so natural.”

classic yacht club wedding

In choosing a reception venue, the couple only looked at one. The bride tells, ” Sandringham Yacht Club was the first and only venue we looked at. My mum has a connection with the Yacht Club as she used to sail there before I was born. It was her idea we go and have a look and we both loved the venue itself (the room didn’t need much if anything at all to look stunning), its amazing views of the bay and city in the distance and the service provided. The team, particularly Melissa, provided great support and service throughout the planning leading up to the day and on the day itself.” The couple incorporated gold from the invitations through to the candle holders on the tables, with white and gold bonbonniere cookies for their guests. They also decorated with fairy lights, which they say, ”topped off and completed the room and made everything look so special.”

classic yacht club wedding

The newlyweds had their first dance to ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ by Frank Sinatra. The bride shares, ”We had no dance lessons leading up to the day, maybe a few trials in our living room the week before.” The couple gave personalised wooden coasters from  JiMi Official  to their guests, using them also for name placements on the table.

Thank you to our beautiful bride and groom for sharing your wedding with us and congratulations! Thank you also to  Perla Photography  for your photographs.

A Classic, Pastel Wedding at Riverside Yacht Club in Riverside, Connecticut

Subtle pops of lavender and hundreds of sweet peas lent a romantic feel to Wesley Royce (30 and a project manager) and Patrick Conlisk’s (32 and a fin

Subtle pops of lavender and hundreds of sweet peas lent a romantic feel to Wesley Royce (30 and a project manager) and Patrick Conlisk’s (32 and a finance manager) timeless wedding. “I couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere but the same church where I had grown up singing in the choir,” Wesley says of their choice to say “I do” at her childhood church. Live trees and an abundance of greenery showcased the classic wood details of the parish. For the ceremony, Wesley donned a vintage veil made by her grandmother nearly 70 years ago. Lavender sweet peas popped against a muted cluster of ranunculus, stephanotis and tuberose. Pastel sugar flowers bedecked the fondant-covered dessert, which consisted of alternating tiers of chocolate chiffon, vanilla praline and dulce de leche cake. “After searching for the perfect cake topper, I asked for our baker to just add flowers on top,” Wesley says. “It was an important lesson to let go of some of the details.” Local microbrews were on tap during cocktail hour, along with a mint lemonade prosecco cocktail cleverly dubbed the Connecticut Crush. After surprising family and friends with a late-night pizza delivery from Frank Pepe’s, the newlyweds ended the night with a bang, thanks to a dazzling fireworks display.

Victoria and Jordan’s Savannah Yacht Club Wedding

classic yacht club wedding

Victoria and Jordan’s December 2019 wedding took place at the fabulous Savannah Yacht Club. It incorporated elements found throughout downtown Savannah, Georgia.

classic yacht club wedding

Savannah is known for its beautiful rivers and beaches . Overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway on the Wilmington River, the Savannah Yacht Club is a family-oriented club founded in the late 1800s.

From the bride: “December is such a sentimental time of year. It represents family time, celebrating our faith, and focusing on loving one another better and more selflessly. We wanted to echo the romance about that with the romance between us.”

classic yacht club wedding

The couple went with a Christmas theme and made it romantic with lots of lights and greenery.

The florals were important and the time of year played an important role in selecting the wedding’s color palette. The new husband and wife stuck with the traditional deep reds, greens, and creams. They had elements mirroring traditional Christmas decor like garlands and tree lights. There was even a Christmas tree!

Classic Slate Blue and Silver Clearwater Wedding | Carlouel Yacht Club

classic yacht club wedding

Caleigh and Chris' Clearwater wedding was a classic celebration that centered around the timeless color white with accents of slate blue and silver. The night was filled with live entertainment and a signature cocktail called Something Blue as a nod to their dog named Blue.

“ I would describe our wedding theme as classic. When planning, we wanted something we could look back on years later and still be in love with every detail of the day. We really wanted something that would stand the test of time, and our wedding planners took our small vision and created the most beautiful wedding for us! The whole team made our dream wedding come true and added the most amazing details,” the bride exclaimed. “ Our colors were slate blue and silver . We chose these colors because we wanted something with a little pop of color to warm up the classic white weddings we loved, and it's such a great spring and summer color!”

The St. Petersburg bride knew from experience that a wedding planner was the first step in the planning process. After being a bridesmaid in one of their previous weddings, Caleigh was thrilled to work with Parties A La Carte .

“We wanted a planner who was well established, able to provide vendors, and helped the day run smoothly. Wedding planning was extremely overwhelming, so meeting with a planner who was so experienced and came highly recommended was such a relief! Finding a quality wedding planner is my number one recommendation to all my friends planning a wedding,” the bride revealed. “ Parties A La Carte  is truly the best! I cannot speak more highly of them! I had seen a few weddings they had done before, but after being a bridesmaid in one of their weddings, I instantly knew I wanted to work with them. I was in awe of how stunning that wedding was and how everything fell into place. The whole day ran so smoothly because of all the hard work they put in behind the scenes. During the whole planning process Jessica, Kelsey, and the rest of the team made planning a breeze They were so easy to work with and went above and beyond to make our wedding day so amazing and beautiful. I am so happy we worked with them because everyone was able to enjoy the day to the fullest!”

For their 130-guest May celebration, Caleigh selected the same venue that she had her sweet sixteen at. To give her fresh ideas for a modern yet timeless wedding aesthetic, she read Marry Me Tampa Bay to help create her dream wedding day.

“Marry Me Tampa Bay was a great help in finding inspiration when we first started planning. Deciding on a theme for a day you'll remember for the rest of your life is very overwhelming, so using Marry Me Tampa Bay to find inspiration was so helpful!” the bride beamed.

To honor the bride's father who passed away prior to the wedding, sentimental elements were intertwined throughout the ceremony and decor.

“Friends and family are the two most important things in our lives, and we really wanted to highlight that. My father passed away about nine months before our wedding day, so we wanted to incorporate small details throughout the day as a dedication to him,” Caleigh revealed. “Everything from the venue to the flowers in my bouquet and Chris' boutonniere were all tributes to him. We had one of our long-time family friends officiate our wedding, and my godfather gave a speech in place of my dad. It was such a special day, and having members of our friends and family take part in the day really made it special.”

The large and lush ceremony floral arrangements created a stunning altar at the outdoor Clearwater venue. To pull in opulence into the classic white theme, stunning white orchids were the focal point of the bride's cascading bouquet.

“We really wanted classic but elegant flowers. Florals and centerpieces can really transform a room. Bruce Wayne Florals came highly recommended by our planner. They really understood the vision we wanted for our day. During our mock-up, I was stunned by all the beautiful options. They worked with us to create a variety of centerpieces that were all stunning and added candles to create a warm and romantic feel ,” Caleigh beamed. “My bouquet was by far my favorite piece they created. Having orchids in my bouquet was something that was very special to me and my connection to my dad, and they created the most beautiful draped bouquet with white orchids.”

While the day was filled with memories that will stay with the couple forever, it was a surprise from Chris that swept Caleigh off her feet and onto the dance floor.

“The most memorable moment of our wedding day was right before the reception. After our photos, our planner brought us into the reception room to show us before everyone got in there. As we were walking around, Chris started to sing under his breath, “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay,” and almost instantly the lead singer of the band got up and started playing that song. We had our first unofficial dance with no one in the room and the band playing just for us. It was so special,” the bride beamed. “The second most memorable moment was our grand exit. We had a sparkler exit down the dock onto a beautiful boat that took us away!”

Where did you spend your honeymoon? Unico Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico. We wanted to go somewhere where we could fully relax but also have options for some adventurous excursions and experience the culture. It was such a beautiful resort with amazing food!

The Proposal: Gasparilla was the first day Chris and I had spent together after the first meeting. It was the first day we really started to fall for each other. Every year since that day, we would always go back to the parade with our friends and have the best time, and we'd reminisce on that first Gasparilla together. Chris decided to make our tradition a little more special. He planned for all our friends and some family members to meet up during the parade, and he popped the question in front of 300,000 people dressed as pirates! It was such a celebration!

Which vendors really exceeded your expectations? Our photographer really exceeded my expectations! Going through the photos and reliving the day all over is still one of our favorite things to do. Our band stole the show! They put on such a great show; Chris had actually asked them to play at our wedding before he even proposed to me, he was that excited about this band.

What advice would you give to other Tampa Bay couples? Hire a wedding planner! It's the best thing you can do! Although it is an extra fee to consider, a wedding planner could actually save you money, and it will save you so much stress! My biggest thing was not wanting to be frantic on my wedding day, and our planners, Parties A La Carte , allowed everyone to enjoy the day and not worry about the small details!

PETER DUNCAN AND RELATIVE OBSCURITY WIN THE 2021 J/70 WORLDS

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

The crew shall consist of 3 or more persons. The number of crew shall not be changed during an event.

The J/70 Class has been created as a strict one-design Class where the true test when racing is between crews and not boats and equipment.

Well, chances are it will not be like Day 1 of the Pre-Worlds. Maybe more like Day 2. But then again, this is MdR—anything can happen.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

Two firefighters injured fighting a massive overnight fire that destroyed

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

Boats on the water with palm trees in the background

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.
