New Archipelago 47 “Explorer’s Catamaran”

' src=

A new entry from the UK, Archipelago Expedition Yachts just unveiled its flagship 47-foot cruising catamaran that it says “offers the ultimate adventure.” The first yacht in a new Archipelago Range, the 47 is being built by Chartwell Marine on the Isle of Man. The range will include 38- and 56-foot yachts later on.

The Archipelago 47 is designed as an “explorer’s catamaran,” according to the company, with a combination of luxury, fuel efficiency, stability, ocean-going performance and even wheelchair access. Powered by two 420-hp Iveco diesels, the 47 is projected to have a top speed of 30 knots and a range of 3,000 nm.

Dr. Stephen Weatherley, the founder and managing director of Archipelago, says, “For this project we wanted to strike a balance between stability, speed, comfort, and sustainability – and, of course, plenty of style. If you’re looking for a vessel that’s as good for short getaways as it is for long journeys, the Archipelago 47 is for you.”

The yacht has four cabins, sleeping eight people. The interior design can be customized, and the boat is built to take hybrid electric-diesel drive, if the owner wants it. The large roof area has room for a solar array that could generate enough power to run the AC and house systems at anchor. It also is built for sustainability, with an aluminum hull, yielding lower environmental impact than fiberglass.

For a luxury touch, the salon and galley sole is heated, and the cat has a divider than can shut off the wheelhouse from the lighted salon for night cruising.

The high-low swim platform and extra wide door to the salon are built for wheelchair access, with one level all the way to the helm. There are also fixed points at the helm station so a wheelchair can be secure there.

Specs.: LOA: 47’5”; Beam: 21’3”; Draft: 3’9”; Disp.: 16 tons; Fuel: 528 gals.; Water: 264 gals..; Power: 2×420-hp Iveco diesels. Read more:

Archipelago 47 yacht tour: On board the all-new ocean-crossing powercat

  • Top stories
  • yacht tours

Reporting from the 2022 Southampton Boat Show, MBY's Alex Smith takes us on a full tour of the Archipelago 47, which was making its global debut...

Designed in collaboration with commercial specialist, Chartwell Marine, this British-built, long-distance aluminium powercat is the first in the firm’s hotly anticipated explorer range and it’s refreshing for a variety of reasons.

For a start, the pronounced elevation of those hull sides creates two very handy benefits. Firstly, it drops the relative profile of the pilothouse, giving the Archipelago 47 a potent military aesthetic that makes the most of the raked roofline and the inverted screen.

And secondly, it creates some superb internal space, both in terms of the storage lockers at the aft ends of those side decks and the headroom for the cabins inside those hulls.

The aluminium construction is also very handy for a boat of this type. In addition to keeping the weight down, improving impact resistance and enabling much simpler repairs, it also makes custom upgrades much easier.

From the big aft deck to the central saloon and the cabins, it can all be tweaked in line with your needs – and so can that big expansive rooftop.

Article continues below…

Leopard 46pc test drive: first full review of the world’s favourite powercat.

While the show boat uses a huge rack for your toys, plus extra space that looks ideal for solar panels or a tender and crane, a flybridge version of the Archipelago 47 is also under development, which should prove exciting news if alfresco seating is a key priority.

That said, the existing layout feels great. With its wide-open space and pale, naturally textured oak fit-out, the main deck saloon is a thoroughly welcoming part of the boat.

The all-round views are great, thanks to the use of sailboat-style guardrails rather than solid bulwarks. And the galley is also a treat, courtesy of elevated work surfaces that enable you to stand rather than stoop as you prep your food and drink.

Down below, Archipelago has confined the accommodation solely to the hulls, avoiding a deep-chested bridge deck, which might threaten to compromise the boat’s running efficiency and ride softness.

But even on boat number 1, the calibre of those sleeping spaces is very clear to see. There’s an outrageously indulgent owner’s cabin in the port hull and there will be a pair of guest cabins, divided by a central heads to starboard, although they weren’t finished in time for the Southampton Boat Show .

You can also spec it with four cabins if required but in all cases, the vast hull windows and lofty side decks make this intriguing new cat a seriously attractive proposition for ambitious cruisers.

The elevated hull sides do good things both for the styling and the internal space

Capable of running at speeds of up to 30 knots, sleeping up to eight people in four separate cabins and cruising continuously for more than 3,000nm, the new Archipelago 47 is all about expanding your horizons.

While hybrid and electric boat options are likely to prove popular on production models, the first Archipelago 47 will be powered by twin 420hp Iveco diesels on straight shafts running in half tunnels.

As for the Archipelago’s aluminium construction, not only does that help keep the weight down, improve impact resistance and reduce development costs. It also makes custom models much easier to create and impromptu repairs much simpler to execute during remote off-grid adventures.

The Archipelago 47 is an aluminium cat with global ambitions

Company founder, owner and CEO Dr Steven Weatherley is a cyber security specialist with a PhD in astrophysics and an experienced motor boat owner.

After searching in vain for a fast, go-anywhere powercat to replace the family’s Mitchell 31, he decided to commission and build one of his own. He was so pleased with the concept drawings that he decided to turn it into a business.

A second Archipelago 47 is already in build and plans for 38ft and 56ft models are also being developed.

archipelago-47-powercat-first-look

In the short term Weatherley plans to use his new boat for day trips and weekends in the Solent with his wife and four young children but ultimately has ambitions for more adventurous bluewater cruising – hence the range requirements.

“The march of the multihulls seems to be gathering pace with every month but this one really does it for me,” says MBY editor Hugo Andreae. “Small and fast enough for day trips but also robust and efficient enough to cross oceans, it really does seem to offer the best of both worlds.”

The builder has taken great care to combine robustness and comfort - the interior is fitted out with the greatest of care and is even equipped with an underfloor heating system, contrasting with the “utilitarian” appearance conjured up in large part by the forward windows whose slope is reversed. Another very “professional” detail is that the interior helm station can be blocked off, so a night watch can be properly maintained even with the lights remaining on in the saloon. Note the large trampolines up front, now a very atypical feature aboard a powercat. Our only one regret with the deck plan is that there are no footbraces (much less any sort of bulwark...) on the side decks. The nacelle remains very open to the cockpit - the latter, decked with synthetic teak and its after end becoming a neat aft platform. A large part of the coachroof is taken up by a roof rack, which is very practical for carrying kayaks or paddleboards for example. Generously powered (840 HP in total for a lightship displacement of 17 tons), the Archipelago 47 is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 25 knots. The builder also offers hybrid and electric propulsion systems and will soon be designing other models with the aim of creating a complete range. Builder: Archipelago Yachts Length: 47’5” (14.45 m) Beam: 21’3” (6.48 m) Draft: 3’9” (1.14 m) Light displacement: 37,475 lbs (17 t) Maximum speed: 25 knots Fuel: 528 US gal (2,000 l) Water: 264 US gal (1,000 l) Range: 3,000 nautical miles Engine: 2 x 420 HP Iveco Price: from £1,200,000 ex-tax

Why the Archipelago 47 is the absolute best catamaran of the year

Archipelago 47 Catamaran

Updated on December 21st, 2023

In front of you is the debut of the British shipyard Archipelago Yachts, which, in our humble opinion, immediately overshadowed all currently existing manufacturers of motor catamarans with its amazing design with non-standard, but very successful solutions. It is safe to say that after the birth of Archipelago 47, such design solutions will become standard due to the combination of simplicity and efficiency.

Why are we sure that this is the best catamaran at the moment in its class? Well, at least because the Archipelago 47 seems to have suddenly created a new class of cruising yachts, in which it now sits in splendid isolation. Therefore, it is already by default the best in its class. We can even call it the Archipelago class for the future. And, if its eye-catching and slightly futuristic design is not enough for you, let’s take a closer look at it.

Brutal but luxurious bluewater powercat

As it becomes clear at first glance, the Archipelago 47 is not just another family catamaran for southern latitudes that are afraid of bad weather. This is an extremely reliable 14.5m expeditionary cruiser built from aluminum with a fully custom configuration. Having category A, it is ready to handle almost any sea conditions.

The very design of the catamaran can tell you something about it. You may notice that the navigation bridge does not have a deep deck, so the seaworthiness and smoothness is far superior to the classic GRP catamarans built for the mass market and charter. However, this does not affect the luxury that surrounds the owner and his guests in their cabins inside the hulls. In fact, this is the best and most pleasant cabin design we have ever seen in a catamaran.

Also, you can immediately notice the wheelhouse with a 360 degree view, the so-called Scandinavian type, with a reverse slope of the glazing, which increases the viewing angle, eliminates glare and at the same time works as a sun visor. This is not an electric yacht (although you can order a hybrid power plant), so horizontal surfaces free from solar panels can be used to place water toys or additional equipment. The cabin roof has a trunk for such a case.

Shipyard founder Stephen Weatherley did not aim to create an unusual multi-hull boat that would attract the attention of the yachting industry or one that would fully satisfy the demands of the market. First of all, he was looking for the perfect boat for himself. Perhaps the closest to this ideal were the displacement yachts of the trawler type , but only the catamaran was able to combine compactness, speed, safety, comfort, and seaworthiness acceptable for blue water. After all, catamarans have many advantages .

Why the Archipelago 47 is the absolute best catamaran of the year

In principle, the idea was simple: Stephen wanted to create a fast boat that could be used for a pleasant weekend with friends, but, if desired, for the whole family to go on a long cruise without latitude restrictions. And now we have the Archipelago 47, with a displacement of 17 tons, with two Iveco engines of 420 hp each, thanks to which the catamaran develops a speed of up to 25 knots and has a cruising range of up to 3,000 nautical miles. On board you can take 2000 liters of fuel and 1000 liters of water.

Expeditionary catamaran for harsh conditions

While all the well-known manufacturers of motor cats flooded the market with their non-sustainable plastic hulls designed for the warm waters of the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Archipelago Yachts went in the opposite direction to offer a unique all-weather catamaran that can be easily used to explore high latitudes.

Luckily, the Brits are also familiar with winter and cold, so we have complete confidence in them when it comes to building and equipping boats that are insulated, with good heating systems, including floor heating. The abundance of wood in the interiors makes staying on board even more comfortable, even when the rain starts to turn into snow. The interior of the wheelhouse is made in dark colors just for these cases. On an overcast day, when the sun cannot break through the dense northern clouds, it is much safer to navigate the yacht from a darkened room.

And here we come to the main thing: the aluminum hulls of the catamaran allow you to feel much more confident in unfamiliar and so unpredictable northern waters. Old-school sailors are still afraid of aluminum, because in the past finding a welder with the necessary equipment was quite problematic if you found yourself too far from civilization with a damaged yacht hull. Fortunately, those days are long gone and this is no longer a problem. Even do-it-yourself repairs with minimal skills are quite affordable and can be done faster and easier than with GRP boats.

Archipelago 47 Aluminium hull

On the other hand, an aluminum hull is in demand in all harsh regions of the planet, such as, for example, Alaska or Scandinavia, precisely because it is very hardy and durable, is not afraid of osmosis, does not require painting, and, being very light, strongly saves fuel. At the same time, the propeller shafts on the Archipelago 47 are located in the half-tunnels of the hulls, reducing the likelihood of damage.

There is one more important detail that came, unfortunately, from Stephen Weatherley’s personal family experience, namely: the possibility of convenient use of the yacht for people with disabilities. “A month before my dad died, he was in a wheelchair, and one of the things that depressed him the most was that he couldn’t get on and off of his boat,” Stephen said. “It’s amazing how difficult it is to get on a proper boat, not just one meant to take wheelchairs out on a day trip. So, I wanted to make features that would ensure that a wheelchair could get on and off the boat.”

So, do you have any doubts about the fact that this is the best motor catamaran, at least this year? The shipyard plans also include the construction of Archipelago 38 and Archipelago 56, which may become the best catamarans in the next years. We sincerely hope so and wish good luck to Steven and his team.

Aluminum Strength

With the up front caveat that there is no one “best” material to use when building a boat as they all have their own lists of pros and cons, when you set about building a boat to take on the extremes that Mother Nature can throw at you when crossing the world’s oceans “short handed” with just 1 or 2 people and doing so with the highest safety and comfort, the choice becomes more clear. As with many other choices when designing and building such a boat, this is an extremely personal decision and what counts the most is that YOU have the highest possible confidence in your choice and can set to sea knowing that your boat will be able to endure much more than you.

The reasons of choosing aluminium as your hull material

xpm-series-content-img-1

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency has become one of the most important subject for boat owners and sailors not only because of high expenses but also they pay attention to the environment and nature. Naval Yachts sees these facts and concentrates in new Technologies and engineered studies together with the technical universities and institutions to find and offer solutions.

We use aluminum. A superior material. Light and 100% recyclable. ( Aluminium Yachts )

We have hybrid solutions in powertrain. We have serial hybrid boats launched already with the latest technology.

We use light materials in interior. We make our calculations to reach a light but stable boat in the end.

We design and use the most efficient hull forms in order to get best results with minimum water resistance under the waterline.

Earth is a great planet to discover and experience on a boat. As long as you can. As the sailors would like to discover and see more places, they need enough speed, consume less and bigger fuel tanks.

Our boats can give the chance the sailors to cruise faster and longer without refueling.

Mission Safety / Safety First

At Naval Yachts, safety is our paramount mission. We prioritize safety first in every aspect of our aluminum yacht production. From design to construction, our unwavering commitment to ensuring the security and well-being of our passengers and crew is at the core of our values

Full Customisation

Naval Yachts is specialised in custom boat building. All our boats are unique and can not be repated because every owner has his own dream on board.

Thanks to our design and engineering team, we can make modifications easily and our experienced production and assemly team can produce and apply these modifications.

xpm-series-content-img-1

With the up front caveat that there is no one “best” material to use when building a boat as they all have their own lists of pros and cons, when you set about building a boat to take on the extremes that Mother Nature can throw at you when crossing the world’s oceans “short handed” with just 1 or 2 people and doing so with the highest safety and comfort, the choice becomes more clear.  As with many other choices when designing and building such a boat, this is an extremely personal decision and what counts the most is that YOU have the highest possible confidence in your choice and can set to sea knowing that your boat will be able to endure much more than you.

The reasons of choosing aluminium as your hull material;

  • Extremely easy to work with using regularly available tools such as carbide tipped saws and router bits and to fabricate with readily available welding and bending equipment.  CNC cutting with plasma, waterjet or laser works particularly well with aluminium which allows custom designs to be as affordably built as production boats with the dramatic savings in labour time and costs.
  • On a like to like boat comparison aluminum boat hulls weigh about 30% less than steel and less weight means a more easily powered hull which pays us back in reduced fuel costs for the life of the boat.
  • Our previous all steel sailboat taught us the valuable lesson that robustly built metal boats do not flex or move under the stress and strain of the seas and everything and everyone onboard benefits from boat parts that stay water tight because they don’t move and from the quiet of cabinetry that isn’t being flexed.
  • eXtremely low exterior maintenance time and costs when left unpainted down to the waterline as we will do.  Left unpainted, bare aluminium quickly forms a hard outer layer of aluminium oxide which prevents any corrosion which will be a major cost savings throughout the life of the boat.
  • Highest strength to weight ratio of any boat building material other than composites.
  • Future modifications or repairs of damaged parts of the hull can be easily done with either onboard equipment if you know how to weld or by pretty much any welders you will find in any country.
  • While steel may have higher puncture resistance in some situations, aluminium is the most pliable and ductile of any other boat material meaning that when (never if) we hit something the aluminium will bend but not break or crack.  By using gradually thicker aluminium hull plating from the 6mm we have on our decks to ultimately 16mm below the waterline and 25mm thick at the keel our hull will most likely see us through pretty much any scenario.
  • Relatively easy to control corrosion or rot compared to steel, wood, fiberglass or composites.
  • Aluminium is very “transparent” in terms of letting  you see any damage that does exist as there is nothing which hides below the surface of unpainted aluminium.
  • It varies somewhat between different world markets but aluminium boats tend to have a higher resale value than other materials because of all the advantages above.

Fuel Efficiency

We use aluminum. A superior material. Light and 100% recyclable.

Perini Navi Art Explorer on the water

Perini Navi delivers world's largest sailing catamaran ArtExplorer

Perini Navi 's 46.5-metre ArtExplorer has been delivered as the world's largest aluminium sailing catamaran. The yacht is now moored in Malta, according to BOATPro .

The yacht will be used as a floating art gallery that will undertake a two-year voyage to showcase "artistic experiences" to the world. Her owner, French businessman Frédéric Jousset, has shared his ambitious plans for the yacht, including Malta, Venice (for the Biennale) Marseille and Morocco. You can listen to the special podcast interview with the owner below.

The yard has explained that the yacht's flybridge will be used for virtual exhibitions, workshops and conferences, while the main saloon will house an art gallery, including an inaugural digital exhibit that was helmed by Nomi Daucé, curator of archaeology at the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

After her two-year trip, the yacht will be available for private yacht charter . Both interior and exterior design are by French architect Axel de Beaufort .

Sustainable considerations include a 65-square-metre sheet of solar panels on the deckhouse, which produces 12 kilowatts of power instantaneously and 200 kilowatts of energy per day. Lithium batteries allow for zero-emission electricity generation for more than six hours at full load, and the exhaust systems are fitted with filters that aim to "decrease emissions and particulate matter".

Technical numbers include a 17.3-metre beam and a 55-metre mast. A fully automated all-carbon sail plan can be operated by a single person, meaning the catamaran can sail at a speed of ten knots even in low wind conditions.

The order of the yacht, which is project managed by Fraser, was finalised in 2021. Speaking previously about the project, Laurent Bredy, Fraser's head of project management, said: "This is by far one of the most ambitious, creative and far-reaching projects I have had the pleasure to be involved in in my career to date."

Giovanni Costantino, founder and CEO of TISG said that the project was innovative on a "technical, engineering and human level" and "represents a further milestone made possible by the continuous stylistic and technological research as well as the professionalism of the entire team that realised the project".

He continued: "A work that demonstrates our ability to be protagonists also in the large sailing segment, as well as pioneers of cutting-edge solutions aimed at significantly reducing the environmental impact of yachts. Art Explorer is the result of continuous investment in the study and research of systems to reduce emissions and contribute to improving air quality and the health of our seas."

ArtExplorer marks the first unit to be built under the Perini Navi brand since its acquisition by The Italian Sea Group (TISG) in late 2021.
