It was initially constructed for the 1992 Olympic games and has been upgraded since then. It has 148 mooring facilities or berths with a 9 to 14 m depth to welcome 190 m long superyachts. Work is underway to construct eight additional berths to welcome yachts between 30 to 8 metres.

The marina has a gymnasium, a cocktail bar and a famous restaurant with live music. The renowned club lies amidst Espanya and Barceloneta quay and can be entered from the Maremagnum recreation complex. There are also several shops to rent water sports equipment.

However, there are a few in particular that are simply irresistible to the superyacht set, boasting iconic facilities that see the world’s glitterati return time and time again to revel in their splendour.

We start with Marina Grande on the island of Capri, which is reportedly the most expensive marina in the world. With a real feel of exclusivity, berthing will need to be arranged many months in advance, especially during peak season. There are over 300 berths in total and the facility can accommodate superyachts of up to 60 metres or 197 foot.

The marina is nestled among striking cliffs and colourful, quaint buildings, offering a truly unforgettable experience. 2. Marina di Porto Cervo, Sardinia

Listed as the world’s second-most expensive marina, Marina di Porto Cervo is located on the northern tip of Sardinia on the famous Costa Smerelda. Here daily berthing fees can exceed 2,500 euros during the high season, which gives an insight into just how desirable the marina is. Among the most expensive periods for berthing are the Deluxe Fair in June and the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup Regatta in September.

With only 14 berths for superyachts, and an average daily berthing price of well over 2,000 euros, Marina di Portofino is one of the most exclusive ports in the world. Again, due to a lack of berths, reservations will need to be made many months in advance, especially during peak season.

Originally a small fishing village set in a protected bay of green waters, Portofino has become an ultimate playground for the super-rich and famous, including the likes of Steven Spielberg, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, and Rihanna (who must be working through our list).

Accessible by a single road—which is usually kept closed to keep the area secluded—the preferred mode of transport to Portofino tends to be boat giving Marina di Portofino a quiet and private feel.

Originally built for the 1992 Olympic games, the marina has since been transformed, recently upgrading to become a five-star, 148-berth facility for superyachts up to 190m (623ft).

Situated in the heart of Barcelona, with idyllic views of the city and out across the sea, Port Vell has become a hugely popular destination with the world’s trendsetters. Yachters can stop for an archaeological exploration on Rhodes or Delos, a night on the tiles in the tavernas of Athens, to the nightclub scene of Mykonos, Corfu, and Crete, the largest of the Greek islands.

The adventure starts in the ancient seaport of Piraeus, in southwestern Athens. Zea Marina is one of the finest, full-service marinas in the Mediterranean, offering 670 berths for vessels up to 492 feet.

4. The Bahamas

The 700 islands of The Bahamas begin at Bimini, just 45 miles off the coast of Miami, and stretch 500 miles southwest to the islands of Great Inagua and Little Inagua, neighboring the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Bahamas were made famous by Ian Fleming (the islands featured in the James Bond spy thrillers Casino Royale , Thunderball , The Spy Who Loved Me , Never Say Never Again , and License to Kill ). But they’ve been a haven for sailors and swashbucklers since the 18th century.

They’re a paradise below the waterline, too, for sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving. Palm-lined beaches, nature preserves, world-class golf courses, and colorful Colonial-style villas welcome seafarers ashore.

5. The Florida Keys

The Florida Keys arc southwest from Virginia Key in the Atlantic Ocean (just south of Miami Beach) to Loggerhead Key in Dry Tortugas National Park, a remote seven-island archipelago in the Gulf of Mexico, 70 miles off Key West. The islands are easy to navigate. Cruising in the Keys can mean a leisurely and scenic sail through the shallow interconnected basins of Florida Bay or a more adventurous trip out on the open waters of the Atlantic.

But it’s not all plain sailing. Mariners can drop anchor in a coral cove to swim, snorkel, or fish, or drop anchor in Islamorada, the “Sportfishing Capital of the World.”  Of course, a trip to the Keys is not complete without a visit to continental America’s southernmost city, Key West, otherwise known as the Conch Republic—a place described as “close to perfect and far from normal,” where flip-flops are the official footwear and every day the sunset is applauded.

6. The British Virgin Islands

One of the world’s great sailing destinations, the BVI comprises four main islands—Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, and Virgin Gorda. There are 50 more islands and cays, including Necker Island (Sir Richard Branson’s private paradise) and Salt Island, home of the wreck of the RMS Rhone, and hundreds of tiny palm-lined islets, sandbars, and rocky outcroppings to navigate, bounded by the beautiful Sir Francis Drake Channel, named after the Elizabethan admiral. 

There are countless draws for mariners: calm currents, steady trade winds, and protected bays. It’s a treasure trove, quite literally—some say it’s buried on Norman Island at the southern tip of the archipelago, made famous by Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island . Today, The Bight, one of the BVI’s most popular (and beautiful) anchorages, enchants seafarers with its sea caves, wreck-diving, and the infamous Willy T floating pirate bar and restaurant. 

7. Bermuda

Bermuda has been the crossroads of the North Atlantic voyage since the town of St. George’s was settled by shipwrecked sailors in 1609. Between March and November each year, racing yachts from around the globe arrive in the harbors of St. George’s and Hamilton parishes to compete in regattas organized by Bermuda’s many sailing clubs. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the island’s temperate climate is a year-round draw for leisure travelers, who come to cruise the island’s Great Sound and soak up the sun and local culture. The warm waters are ideal for scuba diving, whether it’s to explore marine wildlife habitats or historic shipwrecks that dot the reefs around Bermuda’s perimeter.

10 new superyacht marinas to discover around the world

Portonovi, montenegro.

Nestled in the fjord-like Boka Bay a new superyacht marina, which is at the heart of the €650 million luxury development, is set to welcome superyachts next summer. Offering 238 berths, Portonovi marina will be able to accommodate yachts up to 70 metres year-round while yachts up to 120 metres can make use of its seasonal berths.

An ideal starting or end point for exploring Montenegro and Croatia the marina will have a helipad and be an international port of entry. A member’s only yacht club, created by Winch Design, will be a focal point for visitors and there will also be a selection of high end shops and multiple restaurants in the marina village.

Once completed Portonovi will also house 275 properties, including penthouse apartments and sky villas with infinity pools overlooking the marina. The first phase of properties will be ready for occupation by summer 2018.

The complex will also be home to the first One&Only in Europe. The luxury hotel brand, that already has stunning offerings in other yachting hotspots including the Bahamas and the Maldives, will offer 140 rooms, villas, and residences and will be complemented by a vast Espace Chenot Health and Wellness Spa.

Caroline Bay

Perfect for anyone heading to the America's Cup Superyacht Regatta this June, the brand new Caroline Bay Marina sits in the Little Sound, Bermuda.

The marina will be able to host yachts up to 90 metres and will have 30 berths for superyachts over 30 metres, as well as 80 berths for smaller vessels from six to 24.3 metres. Additionally, the marina will be hosting a variety of events throughout the 35th America's Cup in May and June on 47.7 metre charter yacht Arabella , including sunset cruises, rum tastings, day tours and themed suppers. . She will be situated on the America's Cup racecourse and available to marina guests who want to experience the race first hand.

Once completed The Caroline Bay development, will feature a luxury Ritz-Carlton Reserve boutique hotel with, spa, restaurants and ultra high-end branded residences, which are due for completion by April 2018. The new complex offer a range of activities including watersports, hiking and cycling trails, access to golf across the street and a Ritz-Carlton kids' club.

Golfito Marina Village

Golfito Marina Village and Resort, Costa Rica, was officially opened on March 1 after five years of development and can accommodate yachts up to 121 metres. Its first superyacht visitor was the 57 metre Halo .

The marina is located within the gulf of Golfo Duce, making the marina immune from the swells of the Pacific Ocean. With a six-inch tidal range, a current that rarely exceeds 1.5 knots and winds that average five to seven knots, the marina offers a safe environment at all times.

Though parts of the resort are still under construction, visitors to the marina will enjoy the benefits of a fully-equipped yard, 24/7 security and a huge range of yacht services. The hotly anticipated on-site yacht club is a members-only luxury, with restaurants, a cigar lounge, private concierge, fully-stocked bar and a spacious patio for evening drinks.

The marina will also be offering a range of activities, from horse riding on the beach and canopy tours through the jungle to a range of watersports and yoga classes. Golfito Marina Village & Resort is also home to a luxury spa and swimming pool and is also close to luxury boutiques and fine dining restaurants. Additionally, a variety of luxury residences will be available, ranging from beachfront villas to a private island option.

Cala del Forte

A marina in Ventimiglia, Italy, which is approximately 14.6 kilometres away from the Principality of Monaco by boat, is set to offer luxury yacht owners the opportunity to rent one of the planned 171 berths on a 40-year basis.

The Cala del Forte will accommodate yachts ranging from 6.5 to 60 metres and the marina should be fully operational by summer 2018. By 2019, the marina will have a variety of shops, cafés, parking, shipyard, promenade and gardens and either an elevator or funicular to take visitors to the historical Ventimiglia Old Town.

The marina has been bought by the SMIP (Société Monégasque Internationale Portuaire), an organisation owned by the Monaco Government, and will be fully integrated into the management of the Port of Monaco, which also operates Port Hercule and the Port of Fontvieille.

"The purchase of Cala del Forte was a unique opportunity to build a brand-new marina in the immediate surroundings of the Principality," Gianbattista Borea d'Olmo, director of Monaco Ports and Cala del Forte, told Boat International. "The benefits of this investment will include the development of a cross-border collaboration, the creation of new jobs, the demonstration of a new type of eco-responsible and ethical marina management as well as the expansion to the East of traditional yacht cruising grounds."

The current waiting list for berths in Monaco goes into the hundreds and during summer months, more than 50 applications for berths are rejected per day.

"The new development will strengthen the deep historical and cultural links between our communities by enriching the personal and economic relationships that Ventimiglia has with the Principality," Borea d'Olmo added.

Aside from being a stone's throw away from the Principality, the port is within walking distance of one of the most famous food markets on the Italian coastline and provides one of the most sheltered harbours. The picturesque Old Town of Ventimiglia is also the perfect alternative for a day trip away from the hustle and bustle of Monaco.

Ibiza Old Town

A new superyacht marina is being developed in the Port of Ibiza Town after the Ports of Balearics APB granted a concession to YSM, the specialist marina division of Sovren House Group. The area covered includes the former Port Ibiza Town marina and Duques de Alba, as well as a new showcase facility called Es Martell on the dock at Darsena del Levante.

This area previously had a maximum length of 40 metres but the new development will be able to cater for yachts measuring up to 185 metres. As a result, it is expected to attract an influx of ultra-high net worth individuals and provide a boost to the local economy. The new marina is due to launch in time for the 2017 Mediterranean season.

Stephen White, founder and CEO of Sovren House Group, said: "We will be ground-breaking both in Ibiza and across the Balearics in providing the kind of marina that is worthy of the expanding fleet of superyachts." He added the Sovren House Group has already begun working with local authorities to ensure that the new marina brings positive benefits to the community.

Often referred to as the jewel in the crown of the West Mediterranean, Ibiza Old Town is a popular destination for high profile visitors, from Hollywood stars to European royalty.

Marina d'Arechi

The finishing touches have been added to the new Marina d’Arechi in Salerno, Italy and the development is now open, with 1,000 berths including 80 specifically for superyachts up to 100 metres.

Located at the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage site , the marina boasts 340,000 square metres of water basin dedicated to yachts with a scenic backdrop and an eco-friendly design.

Marina d’Arechi is the creation of Agostino Gallozzi, chairman of Gallozzi Group, which has invested €120 million in the project — €80 million of which was concentrated on the marina infrastructure.

“For anyone living in Salerno, sailing and yachting on the Amalfi Coast is the ideal way of enjoying weekends and holidays with friends and family throughout the year. From the age of 15 sailing the Mediterranean waters I visited so many marinas, none of which really satisfied me 100%," Agostino Gallozzi said.

"It had to be an amazing marina, beautiful and perfect, safe, comfortable, friendly and enjoyable every day of the year, state of the art in technology, the place where you want to be all the time. Now I’m proud to say after years of planning: Marina d’Arechi is born.”

The new marina is now part of the Camper & Nicholsons Marinas' network.

Dubai Harbour

Dubai is hoping to become one of the world's leading superyacht hubs thanks to plans for a new marina, which will be the largest in the Middle East and North Africa. Plans were made public on January 2 for Dubai Harbour, which will feature 1,400 berths for vessels up to 85 metres.

Located alongside world-renowned Palm Island, a 135 metre lighthouse will sit at the ocean end of Dubai Harbour and will offer 360 degree views from the observation deck as well as a luxury hotel.

The 1,858,060 square metre development will also offer a cruise ship terminal, retail space, events arena, shopping mall, yacht club and a number of residences.

The announcement was made by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who said: “We are happy that this new project, which represents a unique and innovative new addition to the region’s tourism landscape, opens up a range of new opportunities to investors. Dubai Harbour creates a venue for new investments that support our vision for this important sector and promises to further accelerate the expansion of the tourism industry in the UAE, which is already growing rapidly.”

The project looks to encourage tourism in the area and is inspired by the Gulf’s historical maritime links. In addition to the water stations, the marina will have two helipads so guests can visit by land, sea or air.

“Our region has had a long and historic relationship with the sea, and today we are seeing another initiative inspired by this age-old tradition that opens up new horizons for development. We have great aspirations for the tourism sector, which is one of the main pillars of our economic development and an important source of national income,” he added.

The development, which follows the ongoing construction of a new marina being built alongside the world's longest indoor ski slope in Dubai , is expected to take four years to finish once work starts and will expand Dubai’s yacht capacity by 50% on completion.

Ayia Napa Marina

Work is underway on a new £190 million superyacht marina complex in Ayia Napa, Cyprus. The new 600 berth marina will be able to accommodate yachts up to 80 metres and is scheduled for completion in 2021. The development, which will also include 190 apartments and a series of villas, is the brainchild of Cypriot entrepreneur Gerasimos Caramondanis and Egyptian investor Naguib Sawiris.

The marina has been specially designed to minimise breakwater to ensure a comfortable stay and will offer a wide range of marine services. The marina will be home to a brand new yacht club and beach club as well as a dedicated crew lounge. The neighbouring Pyare Village will act as the commercial hub of the marina, offering shops, cafés, restaurants and on-shore activities along a waterfront pedestrian promenade.

“Cyprus is a safe haven blessed by beautiful nature, year-round sunshine, modern infrastructure, a high standard of living and a genuine culture of warmth and hospitality, strategically located in the eastern Mediterranean at the crossroads of three continents – Europe, Asia and Africa,” said Ayia Napa Marina CEO, Stavros Caramondanis. “The modern, competitive and simple business environment coupled with a high quality of life make Cyprus an ideal place for both visitors and investors.”

The main feature of the development is two towers measuring more than 100 metres in height, which will both offer panoramic views. A mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments will be available, as well as two full-floor penthouse residences.

“We’re not just building a place to live – we’re launching a new era in modern beachfront living,” said Project Partner Naguib Sawiris. “We will exceed the expectations of our residents and our guests and not only transform the Cyprus skyline, but change the way you think about Cyprus.”

With completion expected within the next five years the development is expected to revolutionise the Cyprus superyacht stay .

Port Takola Yacht Marina

Port Takola Yacht Marina and Boatyard in Krabi, Thailand was unveiled last May — The ambitious plan transformed the 110-acre site and saw the creation of 48 berths that can accommodate yachts up to 40 metres.

The site has been developed by retired Surgeon Admiral of the Royal Thai Navy Dr Suriya na Nagara and Matthew na Nagara and it offers residences, a resort hotel, nature trails, and a museum.

The marina is a 40-minute drive from Krabi International Airport and close to one of the best James Bond locations to visit on a superyacht Phang Nga Bay.

“After careful study, we decided to develop a marina to take advantage of the many positive factors of the site, including its perfect shelter and excellent geographical location,” said Admiral Suriya.

Matthew na Nagara added that the plan was to create to a “boutique marina that sits comfortably with the surrounding landscape”.

“We want to combine the legendary Thai hospitality with the management standards expected by sophisticated international yachtsmen,” he said.

The development came at a period when Thailand’s prime minister announced that he wanted to make the country a superyacht hub . Early last year, Thailand granted its first foreign-flagged superyacht charter license which should encourage more yachts to visit the region in the future.

Miraggio Thermal Spa Resort

A new marina opened alongside a luxury five-star hotel in Greece last May. The new marina at Miraggio Thermal Spa Resort, located on the east coast of Kassandra, Halkidiki, can accommodate superyachts up to 40 metres.

When developing the marina the main consideration behind construction was reducing environmental impact. Designers also focused on boosting water circulation to minimise bacteria development to help prevent damage to yachts’ hulls.

Academics from Aristotle University conducted a study on wind and currents in the area which shaped the design. The marina has two “bridge type” jetties which are self circulating and self cleaning. They also help to minimise the swell and swing of yachts berthed in the marina.

“Marina Miraggio is one of the best technologically advanced sea developments in Greece because of its overall architecture, positioning and modern engineering methods used for the design and construction of it, even at the primary stages of the design,” said a spokesman for the marina.

As well as its clever design the marina also offers 24-hour security, state-of-the-art electricity and water service pedestals, a pump out station, Wi-Fi and a petrol and diesel gas station. There is also a new restaurant and café on site.

The marina is located at the heart of the Miraggio Thermal Spa Resort, which stretches over more than 330 acres. The hotel's thermal spa is set to become one of the best luxury spas in the Mediterranean , while its helipad will make it an easy stop off for superyacht owners.

10 OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR SUPERYACHT MARINAS IN EUROPE

With nine seas and the Atlantic, Europe has more than 900 seaports, many of which are well worth a visit. So here's a look at 10 of Europe's most spectacular ports for superyachts.

1. Port Vauban, Antibes

This port is one of the oldest and largest in Europe, it is located in the heart of the French Riviera, in Antibes and more precisely in the Alpes-Maritimes department. The marina has 1,642 berths, including 19 places for superyachts at the Quai des Billionaires. The port of Antibes can accommodate yachts up to 170 meters in length, with a maximum draught of 7 meters. Around the Port Vauban in Antibes, we have a stunning coastal village between Monaco and Saint-Tropez, whose ancient appearance attracts many tourists. In the Vauban harbour, a refuelling station is located next to the central harbour master's office, and all yachts in the harbour benefit from high-speed broadband internet access, as well as shore power and free black and grey water pumping. The port is currently monitored by 20 CCTV units, with plans to install a further 165 cameras, and there is on-site security covering the entire port.

The new arrivals in 2024 knock the mighty 436.4-foot Al Mirqab and Koru , Jeff Bezos’s sailing yacht, off the list. The “smallest” yacht— Serene —measures a whopping 439.3 feet. A raft of behemoths didn’t make it, including Feadship’s 290-foot Project 821 that is launching this year, the largest build from the Dutch shipyard to date.

Two of Lürssen’s 2024 deliveries also fell short, including Project Deep Blue and Project JassJ. That said, the German yard remains top of the leader board with the immoveable 592.6-foot Azzam . It also claims 13 of the 25 world’s largest yachts, two of which are new entries.

The list is interesting because most were built in the last 15 years, but there are several historical yachts, including Savarona , launched in 1931, and El Mahrousa , launched in 1865, that withstand the test of time. Others like Yas and OK are conversions from other types of vessels. The inimitable A is a one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-repeated sailing superyacht.

Here are the world’s top 25 yachts by length.

Azzam | 592 feet, 6 inches

Lürssen could never really boast about Azzam after its launch in 2013 because of the owner’s penchant for privacy, though it did describe the interior by Christophe Leoni, which features a 95-foot-long main salon, as “inspired by the Empire style of the early 19th century.” Owner Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi directed a team of designers and engineers who started with the bare concept, worked through the technical challenges of what might be the most complex superyacht ever, and finished with an unusually large vessel that can top the 30-knot mark when operating in “sprint mode”. Its gas turbines, connected to water jets, also give it the ability to operate at high speed in shallow waters. Nauta Yacht’s exterior features a long, sleek forward area, with well-proportioned tiers moving up to the skydeck. It took an impressive six million man-hours—or four years including engineering—to build. Azzam accommodates up to 36 guests, and a crew of 80.

Fulk Al Salamah | 538 feet, 1 inch

Little information has been released about the world’s second-longest superyacht, the custom-built Fulk Al Salamah , and it has been shrouded in mystery since it was first announced in 2014. Even the overall length of 538.1 feet has been estimated from AIS data. However, the imposing vessel, built and delivered by Italian builder Mariotti Yachts in their Genoa shipyard in 2016, is believed to be owned by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman. Last refit in 2021, the yacht has an exterior design by Studio de Jorio, and it is considered by some to resemble more of a support vessel than a superyacht. Nonetheless, aerial photography shows an impressively large helideck, raked masts, and a bathing platform.

Eclipse | 533 feet, 1 inch

The 533.1-foot stately Eclipse , one of two yachts on this list owned by sanctioned billionaire Roman Abramovich, took five years to design and build. When it left the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg in 2010, it was the world’s largest yacht. The interior has 17 staterooms and a palatial primary suite, with the capacity to carry 85 crew. Both the interior and exterior are designed by Terence Disdale. A proportional profile is defined by tiered decks that sweep upward and bend ever so slightly at the aft ends. Eclipse has a 185-foot-long owner’s deck, the capacity to hold three helicopters, a sophisticated stabilization system, six tenders, and an enormous spa, gym and beach club, not to mention one of the largest swimming pools on any superyacht. Hybrid diesel-electric engines are connected to Azipod drives that give Eclipse a top-end speed of 21 knots, with a range of 6,000 nautical miles.

Dubai | 531 feet, 5 inches

Even at 531.5 feet, Dubai ’s all-white Winch-designed exterior belies the dramatic and vibrant interior within. Colorful mosaic floors, a spiraling glass staircase, 70-foot-wide atrium, and bursts of red, blue, and green create a carnival of scene. Originally commissioned for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei as a joint project between Blohm+Voss and Lürssen . Known as “Panhandle,” the project was halted in 1998 with just a bare hull and skeletal superstructure. The hull was sold to the government of Dubai, and, under the direction of the country’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, work on the 531.5-footer began again, though this time by Platinum Yachts. Dubai delivered in 2006 and is now the sheikh’s royal yacht, with accommodations for 24 guests and quarters for 88 crew. The SOLAS-certified seven-decked yacht has a landing pad for a Black Hawk helicopter, submarine garage, disco and cinema, and can reach a top speed of 26 knots. There’s also a waterfall that cascades from the yacht’s pool, located aft of the main deck. The yacht’s range of 8,500 nm at 25 knots gives it the potential to cruise around the world in record time.

Blue | 518 feet, 3 inches

Lürssen’s newest entry on the list, Blue , which delivered to its Middle Eastern owner in July 2022, may rank at number five out of the world’s largest yachts, but its diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system goes a long way to minimize emissions. The yacht also features an electric Azimuth pod drive that can be used independently or in conjunction with the twin propeller shafts. There is a waste-water treatment system and an advanced exhaust treatment system to help reduce NOx levels, as well as cut down on vibration and noise pollution. There is a second, smaller helipad aft. The British designer has reportedly penned a feminine and elegant interior, though no images have yet been released.

Dilbar | 511 feet, 8 inches

The 2016 launch of Dilbar gave Lürssen the distinction of not only building the longest yacht ever ( Azzam ), but also the largest in terms of volume. Espen Øino designed the exterior, creating a full-bodied superstructure of long, flowing decks, along with two helicopter pads,two helicopter pads, one of which has a hangar with an H175 helicopter always on standby. Dilbar also has an oversized garden and an 82-foot swimming pool that can hold an incredible 6,357-cubic-feet of water and according to Lürssen, is the world’s longest on a yacht. The interior by Winch Design is defined by its “rare and exclusive luxury materials,” says the builder, declining to go into detail. Despite Dilbar ’s volume, the designers did a masterful job making the yacht look relatively svelte. In June 2020, Dilbar returned to Lürssen for a significant refit, where the yacht remains following U.S. sanctions placed on the owner, Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, in 2022. The yacht’s value is estimated to be $600 million.

Al Saïd | 508 feet, 5 inches

Al Said measures 508'5" and was built by Lurssen Yachts

Another 500-plus-foot yacht from Lürssen, the original Project Sunflower gained its official name of Al Saïd following its launch in 2016. Espen Øino’s exterior is akin to a classic cruise liner, complete with the twin-exhaust stacks in the center of the superstructure. Owned by the Sultan of Oman, the yacht was listed for the sale for the first time in April 2022 for an undisclosed sum, but a buyer has yet to be confirmed. The six-decked Al Saïd can carry 154 crew and an estimated 70 guests across 26 suites. Lürssen reports a top speed of 22 knots. The London-based Redman Whiteley Dixon studio designed the interior, which includes a concert hall that can hold a 50-piece orchestra, a private cinema for 50 people; you’ll also find a medical room and dental care on board.

A+ | 483 feet, 1 inch

Lürssen Topaz largest yachts in the world

Very little is known about A+ (formerly Topaz) , which was launched by Lürssen in 2012. Tim Heywood Designs did the exterior, which features helipads on the foredeck and amidships on an upper deck. A lower aft deck includes a swimming pool. The German yard has not released any images of the Terence Disdale interior. Reported to be owned by Manchester City Football Club owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan—Emirati royalty and deputy prime minister of the UAE— A+ is equipped with a 40-foot Vikal catamaran beachlander and is powered by six Wärtsilä engines to reach a top speed of 22 knots. It can carry 62 guests and up to 79 crew and was last refit in 2022.

Prince Abdulaziz | 482 feet, 3 inches

The 5,200-tonne Prince Abdulaziz is one of the Saudi Royal family’s yachts, its first owner being King Fahd. Designed by Maierform, the yacht was the longest and tallest in the world at the time of its launch, a title the 482.3-foot Prince Abdulaziz held for 22 years until Dubai launched in 2006. The late David Nightingale Hicks, known for his use of bright colors, was the interior designer. The lobby is said to be a replica of the Titanic . The yacht is also rumored to be carrying surface-to-air missiles, though that may be an urban legend. Launched by Helsingør Værft in Denmark in 1984, it was last refit in 2023.

OK | 479 feet

Originally built by Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding in 1982, the semisubmersible heavy lift ship was used for decades by DYT Yacht Transport as float-on yacht carrier. In 2022, the vessel underwent a private conversion at Karmarine shipyard in Turkey, turning it into a luxury, though highly unusual, yacht named OK . Modifications include a matte-black paint job, gold-tinted glazing, and teak decking. The vessel’s 328-foot submersible aft deck—a feature that first attracted her new owner, who uses OK to transport their 150-foot ketch—is now covered in a carpet of artificial grass. A 40-tonne crane allows for the safe and easy launch and retrieval of a vast range of toys, including a seaplane. The interior by Bozca Design is reported to include accommodation for 20 guests, a botanical garden, and a crazy Willy Wonka–inspired glass elevator that operates outside of the yacht’s superstructure.

Opera | 479 feet

Very little is known about Lürssen’s mysterious superyacht Opera , though it’s thought to be a rebuild of Project Sassi, which was destroyed in a fire in 2018 at the German shipyard. Now four feet longer than the first iteration, the superyacht became the 11th largest yacht in the world when it delivered to its patient owner in 2023. Exterior and interior designed by Terence Disdale, Opera has a whopping 66-foot beam and an interior volume exceeding 10,000GT. No interior images have been released yet, though judging by its two swimming pools, one with a lifting floor, and two helipads—one on the bow and one on the upper aft deck—it seems no expense has been spared.

El Mahrousa | 478 feet, 1 inch

El Mahrousa , which means “The Protected” in Arabic, is currently Egypt’s presidential yacht, though the 478.1-footer has a separate history as that country’s royal yacht. The London-based Samuda Brothers began the build in 1863, and it was launched in 1865. The world’s oldest superyacht—and formerly the world’s biggest—was originally built for the Ottoman governor of Egypt, Khedive Ismail, and later carried three Egyptian kings into exile. The yacht was also at the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. It features external design by the British naval architect Sir Oliver Lang and has had multiple modifications over the years, including a lengthening by 40 feet in 1872 and another 17 feet in 1905. During the second refit, the owners replaced its paddle-wheel engines with turbine-driven propellers. The yacht, in care of the Egyptian Navy, occasionally goes to sea for a day or two. In 2015, it was used to inaugurate the new Suez Canal.

Project Luminance | 475 feet, 7 inches

Delivered in 2024, Project Luminance (the real name is yet to be confirmed) is Lürssen’s newest entry on the list. Exterior designed by Espen Øino, the yacht has a raked bow, a contrasting paint job in a dark blue hull and silver superstructure and a whopping 8,999 gross tons of interior volume. Few details are yet known about the gigayacht owned by Ukrainian mining and financial services mogul Rinat Akhmetov, including the interior by Francois Zuretti, but aerial shots reveal twin helicopter pads—one on the foredeck and another high up aft—a large beach club, and an infinity pool, with a private spa pool area on the foredeck.

A | 468 feet, 5 inches

Undoubtedly one of the most visionary projects ever delivered by German shipyard Nobiskrug, the Philippe Starck-designed A is a wild fantasy of the future. Delivered in 2017, the futuristic look of sailing yacht A includes smooth, silver-metallic surfaces and windows that look nearly invisible, a 26-foot draft, three composite masts that bend slightly, and a deck hidden by high bulwarks. The Philippe Starck–design is a wild fantasy yacht of the future. The 468-foot sailing yacht is a technical victory for Nobiskrug , which developed composite fashion plates to create the unusual shapes without compromising any strength or fluidity. It has the tallest freestanding composite masts on any sailing vessel, a diesel-electric propulsion system, and state-of-the-art navigation systems. The boat also reportedly has an underwater viewing platform in the keel. Starck’s traditional interior features dark wood, copper accents, and cozy patterned carpets. The split-deck main salon is divided into zoned seating areas with integrated bookshelves. A remains today the world’s largest sailing yacht six years after its launch, though many argue it is better defined as a sail-assisted yacht.

Nord | 466 feet

Nord was announced in 2015 but didn’t hit the water until its 2020 sea trials in the Baltic Sea. The 466-foot yacht features interior design by Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard and was Lürssen’s first yacht launched from its floating shed at its facility in Vegasack. Boasting top-tier amenities, the yacht includes a sports and diving center on the lower deck, multiple tenders ranging in size up to 50 feet and a large swimming pool. The two helipads support the yacht’s long-range cruising capabilities for autonomous exploration, and a retractable hangar means a helicopter can slide neatly into the superstructure for storage when not in use. A generous 20 staterooms accommodate 36 guests across six decks, while a sleek aft-sloping superstructure gives Nord an individual profile on the water.

Yas | 462 feet, 6 inches

As a converted yacht, Yas is one of the most interesting vessels on this list. The dolphin-like exterior was originally a former Dutch Navy frigate that launched in 1978 and eventually sold to the navy of the United Arab Emirates, where it was renamed Al Emirat . The yacht underwent its dramatic conversion in a facility in Abu Dhabi’s main port, emerging as a gleaming superyacht in 2011, with one of the most interesting profiles on the water. It was eventually delivered four years later. Reportedly owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al Nahyan, half-brother of the president of the UAE, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the design by Paris-based Pierrejean Vision is defined by massive glass surfaces. Yas can accommodate 60 guests and 58 crew members. Mated to a steel hull, the superstructure is the largest composite edifice ever built.

Solaris | 459 feet, 3 inches

Russian oligarchs yachts continued to be seized

Owned by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, the 476-foot Solaris was one of the largest yachts to deliver in 2021. Last refit in 2022 at MB92 in Barcelona, the vast, highly private explorer is built by German shipyard Lloyd Werft and features a displacement steel hull with bulbous bow and steel superstructure with teak decks. The eight-deck exterior by Australian designer Marc Newson houses a large helipad, sundeck, spacious beach club aft and 21,527 square feet of glass, the largest panes to ever be built into a yacht. Lloyd Werft also built the Russian billionaire’s previous explorer yacht Luna , which he reportedly sold for $360 million to his close friend Farkhad Akhmedov in 2014.

Ocean Victory | 459 feet, 3 inches

The largest motoryacht ever built in Italy, Fincantieri’s Ocean Victory is owned by Russian billionaire Viktor Rashnikov, who was sanctioned in 2022. The seven-deck exterior by Espen Øino includes two helideck platforms and a hangar belowdecks, as well as exceptional outdoor social areas and a floodable tender dock. Ocean Victory has accommodations for 28 guests as well as quarters for 56 crew. The interior by Alberto Pinto remains a secret, aside from the yacht’s six pools, a 3,300-square-foot spa, and an underwater observation room.

Scheherazade | 459 feet, 3 inches

When Lürssen launched Al Salamah in 1999, it was the third-largest yacht in the world. Its number 20 ranking shows how much has changed in the last 20 years. Code-named MIPOS, or Mission Possible, the yacht was designed by Terence Disdale . Originally owned by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the yacht was put up for sale for $280 million in in 2013 before it was reportedly given to Bahraini Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa as a gift. The large imposing exterior is primarily protected space, with an upper deck exposed to the elements. Al Salamah has staterooms for 40 guests, including two owner suites, 11 VIP staterooms, and eight twin cabins. The yacht can carry up to 96 crew and has a top speed of 22 knots. Al Salamah was last refitted in 2009.

Rising Sun | 454 feet, 1 inch

Designed by the original guru of yacht designers, Jon Bannenberg, Rising Sun was built by Lürssen for Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and is currently owned by billionaire David Geffen, who reportedly paid $590 million for the yacht. The yacht comes with a gym, a grand piano, multiple swimming pools, a beauty salon, and a spa with a sauna. Delivered in 2004 and last refit in 2022, the yacht’s exterior is defined by banks of windows across the superstructure. Rising Sun has 86,000 square feet of living space in 82 rooms. It can accommodate 18 guests in nine cabins, with the capacity to carry up to 46 crew. The interior by Seccombe Design includes a gym, cinema, and wine cellar, and the rear cockpit deck was designed as a basketball court. Geffen received global media backlash in 2020 for his “tone deaf” social-media posts that pictured himself on board his yacht during Covid-19 lockdown.

Flying Fox | 446 feet, 2 inches

The 446.2-foot Flying Fox is arguably the most high-profile yacht on this list, primarily for being the largest yacht available on the charter market. In 2022, it was also singled out as “blocked property” by U.S. authorities in 2022 due to its previous management Imperials Yachts, which was on the US sanctions list. The yacht’s owner, however, Russian billionaire Dmitry Kamenshchik, is not sanctioned, so the yacht was turned over to him and returned to charter in 2024. Key features of the Espen Øino-designed exterior are a curvaceous dove-gray hull and a 3.7-foot swimming pool that runs athwartship on the main aft deck, the largest ever found on board a yacht. A two-decked spa also gives guests access to a cryosauna, hammam, and relaxation room with a fold-down balcony at sea level. Packed to the rafters with the latest amenities, the yacht holds a diving center, a decompression chamber, and two helipads. Flying Fox is PYC compliant and can accommodate 25 guests.

Savarona | 446 feet, 2 inches

Launched in 1931, and by far the largest and fastest private yacht of her day, Savarona was built for American heiress Emily Roebling Cadwalader and is easily identified by its two mustard-colored funnels. The yacht was eventually acquired by Turkey to be the presidential yacht of Kemal Atatürk, founder of modern Turkey. Jane’s Fighting Ships described the yacht in 1949 as “probably the most sumptuously fitted yacht afloat.” Savarona was later converted to a training ship for the Turkish Navy and, in 1978, destroyed by fire. The yacht laid in tatters for 10 years. A Turkish businessman spent around $45 million refurbishing Savarona , commissioning Donald Starkey for the interior and replacing the original steam-turbine engines with modern Caterpillar diesels. Savarona became Turkey’s official presidential yacht again in 2014, accommodating up to 34 guests in 17 suites and carrying up to 48 crew. Amenities include a swimming pool, a Turkish bath, a 280-foot grand staircase, a movie theater and a library dedicated to Atatürk.

Crescent | 443 feet

Lürssen Crescent superyacht Larry Ellison

Last refit in 2021, Espen Øino’s dark hull and tiered superstructure was one of the most exciting launches of 2018. Called Project Thunder internally at Lürssen, the custom-built yacht features cutouts along the hull sides that allow full ocean views from the saloon on the primary deck, as part of Crescent ’s distinctive curved superstructure. Its most noteworthy feature is the jaw-dropping bank of three-deck-high windows in the center of the yacht. This architectural feature serves as the centerpiece of a very compelling design. The yacht has accommodations for 18 guests in nine staterooms. Little is known about the François Zuretti-designed interior, other than Lürssen describing it as being “traditionally styled.” If it lives up to Crescent ’s brash exterior, the complete yacht promises to be an entirely groundbreaking design. In March 2022, Crescent was detained by Spain as property of Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin, who is sanctioned in connection with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Serene | 439 feet, 3 inches

Serene is the yacht that launched Fincantieri into the superyacht segment, and what a debut it was. The largest yacht ever launched in Italy when it was delivered in 2011 (surpassed three years later by Ocean Victory ), the Espen Øino seven-deck design features a long, sleek blue hull crowned by a white superstructure. Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton Design created the 43,056-square-foot interior for a Russian owner, which includes a double height atrium with a piano lounge at the top and a vast open-plan main salon below. Sunken LEDs and bright pink and purple neon lights create a modern party vibe in the social areas, which contrast with the elaborate yet more traditional guest suites. A spiral staircase with intricate metal banisters soars through the heart of the yacht. The open stern area has a winter garden (enclosed glasshouse) that allows dining in all seasons. Serene also has two helipads and a hangar, a big swimming pool, and a tender garage large enough for a submarine.

According to a study from the Italian Marine Industry Association and Deloitte , the global new build yachting market has reached €33 billion ($35.9 billion) during the industry boom in 2022. This marks an 11% increase from the year before, and a CAGR of 10% since 2014. Increasing prices, along with increasing demand from customers, has been responsible for this positive growth. According to the study, Europe and North America are the biggest consumer groups, taking up 70% of the total market share. Italy remains at the top in yacht building, generating €4.4 billion in yacht production value for 2022.

Despite the positive growth, superyacht sales have taken a dive in 2023, the new SuperYacht Times’ State of Yachting report indicates. Long wait times, rising costs, and the exclusion of Russian oligarchs from the superyacht market have all led to this decline. There were 203 superyacht sales in 2023, down from 245 in 2022, and from a record 313 in 2021. A buyer placing an order for a new yacht over 200 feet today has to wait three to four years owing to backlogs from the pandemic. Orders for yachts between 200 t0 600 feet have experienced the most decline, by 40%, largely since the rich buyers from Russia are dropping out of the market. Despite the drop in new sales, yacht completions have been up. According to SuperYacht Times, there are now nearly 6,000 super yachts, triple the number in 2022.

It wasn't simple to make a list of the world's best yacht builders and shipyards in the world, especially now when it seems that the superyacht business has regained its momentum. Following the pandemic's upheaval, boat builders have resumed normal operations. There are now 173 small yacht manufacturers and large builders in 25 countries working on at least one yacht larger than 24m. Every year, around 400 boats larger than 24m are supplied to their owners by luxury yacht companies that specialize in yacht categories or product segments that distinguish them from other commercial shipyards. Services from airlines to healthcare, shipping and finance have been coming back online after computer systems were disrupted for hours.

Even with the glitch fixed, companies were dealing with backlogs of delayed and cancelled flights and medical appointments, missed orders and other issues that could take days to resolve.

Businesses also face questions about how to avoid future blackouts triggered by technology meant to safeguard their systems.

An earlier software update by global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, one of the largest operators in the industry, had triggered systems problems that grounded flights, forced broadcasters off air and left customers without access to services such as healthcare or banking.

It was not a security incident or cyber attack, according to the firm and the UK's National Cyber Security Centre.

The outage shone a spotlight on CrowdStrike, an $83bn company that is not a household name but has more than 20,000 subscribers around the world including Amazon and Microsoft.

The UK government responded with its COBRA emergency team.

Here's a look at some of the services affected...

As of 8pm, more than 5,000 were cancelled across the globe - out 110,000 scheduled;
There were long queues at multiple UK airports, but Heathrow and Edinburgh say operations are now returning to normal;
Ryanair told customers whose flights have been cancelled to leave airports;
Some airlines issued handwritten tickets, while some airports - like Belfast International - are relied on whiteboards to update passengers;
Many US carriers grounded their planes, while airports worldwide were impacted in Spain, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Germany and elsewhere;
Train services were also affected - including operators such as Avanti West Coast, Great Western Railway, Southern and Thameslink.

Hospitals and emergency services

Some people were experiencing difficulties booking appointments at GP surgeries, with practices across England affected, according to the NHS;
Pharmacies warned disruption could continue over the weekend;
The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust declared a critical incident as IT issues are affecting its services;
A few hospitals warned of delays and disruption, but others said services were running normally;
The London Ambulance Service said it experienced "huge increases" in the number of calls to its 999 and 111 services following;
NHS Blood and Transplant urged people to keep their blood donor appointments, as there remains an "urgent need for O negative blood".
Major UK supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons and Waitrose reported issues with online services;
One Waitrose in Hampshire was accepting cash only, in an example of what was thought to be a wider issue;
Many businesses were left with issues with their payroll software, which could potentially pose problems for companies that pay weekly.

The CEO of CrowdStrike has warned "adversaries and bad actors" will try to exploit the crash.

George Kurtz encouraged "everyone to remain vigilant" and ensure they are engaging with official CrowdStrike representatives.

He promised "full transparency" on how the crash occurred.

The company was working on a technical update and root cause analysis that will be shared with everyone.

The outage was caused by a defect found in a Falcon content update for Windows hosts, he said, meaning Mac and Linux hosts were not impacted.

"All of CrowdStrike understands the gravity and impact of the situation," he said.

"As we resolve this incident, you have my commitment to provide full transparency on how this occurred and steps we’re taking to prevent anything like this from happening again."

This wasn’t supposed to happen.

We were told that as the internet matured, that this kind of thing - a single error causing a domino effect taking out millions of machines - was supposed to become less and less likely. There would be more and more servers and cables distributed in more and more places, making a single point of failure increasingly unlikely.

Instead, what today’s episode - in which an update from a company called CrowdStrike to customers using its services around the world essentially broke the Windows operating system on their computers - has underlined is that often the more complex a system becomes, the more vulnerable it is to collapse.

The great irony, of course, is that CrowdStrike’s raison d’être is to prevent moments like this from happening. The company’s Falcon Sensor is a product used to prevent cyber attacks - a complex program best thought of as a kind of super anti-virus package, which, in order to do its job, gets privileged access to more parts of your machine than regular software.

But it so happens the latest update to Falcon Sensor, uploaded overnight to computers around the world, had a dodgy bit of code in it, which caused Windows machines to crash.

Right now, it looks as if the only way it can be resolved is by technicians rebooting each machine and manually deleting a particular file (C-00000291*.sys - since you asked).

In other words, spare a thought for your company’s technicians, because they’re about to have a long weekend.

The more complex we get, the more vulnerable we are

But perhaps the most striking lesson from the episode is a more ancient one, laid out by historian Joseph Tainter in his 1988 book The Collapse Of Complex Societies.

The more complex societies and systems become, the more vulnerable they are to collapse. Tainter was referring to examples like the fall of Rome or the collapse of ancient Mesopotamian civilisation, but one could just as easily apply the logic to modern examples.

Lurking beneath Tainter’s thesis was the point that often in a complex society of organisation actors might make decisions which seem sensible but, due to the complexity of the system and their inability to understand it, could actually make it more vulnerable.

Consider the subprime crisis which triggered the financial crisis of 2008. Mortgages were packaged and repackaged into assets sold, eventually, to banks - which had little understanding of their actual value and their risks. The more complex the system became, the less able people were to comprehend how exposed they were to a catastrophic failure, and the more vulnerable the entire edifice was to collapse.

How all roads led to CrowdStrike

Now let’s ponder the current IT malaise. Let’s ask ourselves: how did it come to be that so many companies around the world had the very same bit of software installed on their systems, making them vulnerable to the very same lines of duff code?

After all, the vast majority of people working at the companies affected will never have heard of CrowdStrike. Like the bankers presiding over the financial crisis, they had no idea of the potential vulnerabilities lying within their systems.

But in recent years, as businesses have become more and more concerned about the risk of cyber attacks, they have begun to implement cyber security checks and regulations.

These often took the form of a checklist some poor operative had to fill out: how many computers have you got? What operating system? Are they all online?

What forms of cyberprotection do they have? And so on.

Now, this might sound like frustrating red tape to many of you, but the reality is that these days some companies stipulate that anyone doing business with them must have fulfilled all the items on the checklist.

So all of a sudden, salespeople trying to do a deal would discover that they couldn’t do it without complying with the checklist. The company’s financial survival depended on being able to tick the boxes!

And invariably one of the boxes in those checklists was: do you have an endpoint detection and response (EDR) solution? And if you didn’t have an EDR solution (or, more likely, didn’t know what one was) then invariably you googled EDR and looked for the world’s biggest provider, which just so happened to be… CrowdStrike.

Perhaps you spoke to your IT provider and insisted that you needed an EDR. Perhaps they said: "Oh I wouldn’t do that if I were you” - but then… no EDR no sale. This is a stylised example, of course, but you see how this kind of thing can happen.

And hence, gradually and imperceptibly, a large proportion of the world’s companies came - mostly unbeknownst to their leaders - to be running the very same piece of software with direct access to the most privileged parts of their computers.

And then all it took was a few lines of code and all of those machines were instantly dead - or rather, they faced the 'Blue Screen of Death'.

A costly cautionary tale

So there’s a reminder here about the risks of complexity. It's way too early to put a figure on how much disruption this episode has caused and how much economic damage wrought. The short answer is almost certainly: a lot.

Millions of people around the world have been unable to travel, to communicate, to transact. It may well transpire that it has put lives at risk, given it has affected many doctors’ ability to do their job.

Perhaps the best thing that can be taken from today’s chaos is that it might just serve as a cautionary tale which could make our computers that bit safer and more stable in the future.

It might remind bosses that cyber security decisions are more than box-ticking exercises - and sometimes installing cyber security software can backfire.

It reminds us how dangerous it is if everyone in the world is relying on the same provider.

It reminds us about the need for redundancy - to have backup systems.

It reminds us of the dangers of complexity.

This probably won’t come as much consolation if you’re one of those people whose holiday plans have been disrupted or your business messed around by the IT outage today.

But it’s something.

The National Pharmacy Association has warned disruption is likely to continue through the weekend as outlets deal with a backlog of medicine deliveries.

Pharmacies reported issues with accessing prescriptions from GP surgeries and said this would affect the delivery of medicines to patients.

Patients with "minor ailments" were also being sent to pharmacies from GP surgeries earlier today, according to the Independent Pharmacies Association.

No "serious patient safety issues" have been identified during the outage, Health Secretary Wes Streeting said, urging people to "bear with" GPs after disruption to appointment bookings and other services.

The global IT outage has impacted the EMIS Web system, NHS England says, which is understood to be used by about 60% of practices in England.

The programme enables GP practices to book appointments, examine records and help with admin.

Around 3,700 GP practices may be affected, the Press Association reported.

Professor Kamila Hawthorne, chairwoman of the Royal College of GPs, said: "Our members are telling us that today's outage is causing considerable disruption to GP practice bookings and IT systems – practices using EMIS IT systems appear to be particularly affected.

"Outages like this affect our access to important clinical information about our patients, as well as our ability to book tests, make referrals, and inform the most appropriate treatment plan."

There were issues with administrative systems in some hospitals while some ambulance services reported a surge in demand.

The disruption caused by the outage has been truly global - here are just a few examples.

Bradesco, one of the main banks in Brazil, notified its users via its app that digital services were unstable due to a global cyber outage, but its ATMs were working normally.

Azul Airlines, a Brazilian low-cost airline, said its check-in systems were affected, causing occasional flight delays.

Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, western Japan, said the global system outage will affect ticket sales at the park over the weekend. The park said its ticket booth sales will not be available on Saturday and Sunday.

The outage grounded some flights, disrupted hospitals and backed up border crossings in Canada.

Porter Airlines said it was cancelling its flights for several hours because of the outage.

Air Canada, Canada's largest airline, said there is no major impact to its operations, adding that it's monitoring the situation closely.

University Health Network, one of Canada's largest hospital networks, said that some of its systems had been impacted by the outage.

Windsor Police reported long delays at both the Canada-US border crossings at the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor tunnel.

The National Centre for Cyber Security in Sri Lanka says four information technology companies there have been affected.

Switzerland

Landings at Switzerland's Zurich Airport have returned to normal after being suspended earlier in the day.

A German regional grocery chain, Tegut, temporarily shut its 340 stores in the country this morning due to the impact on cash register systems. By early afternoon, more than half of the stores were open again.

South Africa

In South Africa, at least two major banks said they experienced service disruptions as customers complained they weren't able to make payments using their bank cards at grocery stores and gas stations or use ATMs. Both said they were able to restore services hours later.

Baltic Hub, a major container hub in the Baltic port of Gdansk, Poland, says it's battling problems resulting from the global system outage. Entry gates are temporarily closed and business has been suspended, the Baltic Hub said in a statement.

We have some updated figures now on the number of cancelled flights.

As of 8pm, 167 flights scheduled to depart UK airports have been cancelled, aviation analytics company Cirium said.

This equates to 5.4% of scheduled departures, the firm said.

Some 171 flights due to land in the UK were cancelled.

Globally 5,078 flights, or 4.6% of those scheduled, have been cancelled.

The crash occurred because the wrong file was distributed to computers, says an IT security expert.

Human error will have played a part because the faulty file must have been approved at some stage in the process, says Tim Rawlins, director of the NCC Group, a organisation which secures business data.

CrowdStrike will be "tearing their hair out" trying to find the cause of the crash. Only they will know why the wrong file was uploaded, but it will come out.

"I imagine somebody there is having an extraordinarily bad day," he said.

"It is really unfortunate, but imagine you are the person who is responsible for going: 'Right, here is the file, we have made all the changes, we've done all the testing, push it to the machine to do the distribution [and] the distributor has either grabbed the wrong file or the wrong file has been given to it.'"

Asked if human error was involved, he said: "It is probably a fully automated system but at some stage there will have been a person in the loop. Somebody would have gone 'yes I approve this one to go'.

"Who knows where that mistake is. It will come out. I'm sure CrowdStrike will be tearing their hair out trying to find that issue."

How did the mistake happen?

Mr Rawlins explained software that protects computer systems from threats, named end point detection and response (a more comprehensive package than simple anti-virus), went awry.

Update packages are constantly created and then uploaded and pushed out it out to "endpoints" - the computers - but it appears the distribution system took and pushed out "the wrong file".

"That's the file that is full of zeros, as people describe it - there is noting in there for the system to operate," said Mr Rawlins.

"And that has caused the system to glitch, which has led to this blue screen of death that everyone is talking about."

Constant security updates have to be released "because the bad guys and girls are constantly changing their attacks".

One computer will report a dodgy new file to Crowdstrike, which will then need to tell all it's other computers how to stop it.

"It's this classic arms race," said Mr Rawlins.

The IT crash has been an "early wake-up call" for the prime minister, perhaps damaging his honeymoon period, says chief political correspondent Jon Craig.

The outage overshadowed Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressing the cabinet - the first foreign leader to do so in person since Bill Clinton, he says on our special programme, Crash: The Global IT Outage.

The government will have to take a "very critical look" at precautions for this type of issue.

Craig adds there is every chance there will be a COBRA meeting with ministers over the weekend.

"The prime minister will want to be better prepared for a crisis of this sort or a different sort in the future," he says.

"I'm sure there will be a big inquest after today and the PM will bang a few heads together."

This will happen again, science and technology editor Tom Clarke says on our special programme, Crash: The Global IT Outage.

Continual updates and fixes are required to keep systems safe from cyberattacks, he explains.

If they are to work, those updates must be pushed out globally and immediately - or else leave networks vulnerable.

"Really the answer is: People have to rethink the way they are going to manage when they don't have access to their IT."

Much of everyday business needs to be connected, and backup systems are a question of cost, says Clarke.

Many shops and restaurants are cashless, but it may be time to think about "how do we revert to some other form of payment if we lose that".

This weekend's Bayview Mackinac Race marks 100 years with record number of boats

PORT HURON, MI - Excitement is building along the shores of Lake Huron as the 100th running of the Bayview Mackinac Race is set to kick off Saturday.

This century milestone is made even more special because a record number of sailboats - 332 are registered - are set to sail up the course to the finish line near Mackinac Island.

As a nod to the race’s impressive history, boat crews will be competing on the original course mapped out for the first Bayview Mackinac Race in 1925. This means all the racing yachts will start in southern Lake Huron, then head 235 miles north and west. The boats will pass south of Bois Blanc Island before crossing the finish line that sits between Round Island and Mackinac Island.

Boats from 17 states and Canada are set to participate in what is one of the longest-running freshwater yacht races in the world.

The race begins Saturday, with the first group of boats set to hit the starting line at 11:30 a.m.

“Anyone up the Thumb coast of Lake Huron should be in for quite a show as the entire fleet sails up to Mackinac, and if there is a downwind blowing and spinnakers unfurled it will be a spectacular view from the shore,” said Charlie Trost, race chair for the 2024 Bayview Mackinac.

“The large and diverse fleet reflects the inclusivity and wide appeal of the race, drawing competitors from various regions and backgrounds, which enhances the competitive spirit and camaraderie among sailors.”

While commercial air service was slowly recovering on Friday after a technology outage caused thousands of flights worldwide to be canceled or delayed, the ripple effect from the disruption left airports crowded with passengers and airlines working to get planes and crews back in position.

“These flights, they run so tightly, so back to back, that even after a root cause is addressed, you can still be feeling those impacts throughout the day,” said Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, in an appearance on CNBC.

The outage was caused by a flawed update from the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, whose software is widely used around the world. At United Airlines, for example, the outage affected technology used to calculate aircraft weight, check in customers and operate call-center phone systems.

Throughout Friday, messages that travelers posted on social media showed flights grounded worldwide, some terminal monitors down and crowds of stranded passengers waiting at airport gates and customer service desks. At airports in India and South Korea, some passengers stood in long lines to obtain handwritten boarding passes .

Are flights still grounded?

Since the initial outage, service is slowly resuming, but the number of global delays and cancellations has continued to increase throughout the day.

Worldwide, around 110,000 commercial flights were scheduled on Friday, and around 5,117 of those flights, or 4.6 percent, have been canceled, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. In the United States, the number of cancellations stood at more than 2,300 — or about 9 percent of daily flights — as of Friday afternoon.

Fewer than half of the flights today in the United States left on time, the others departing with delays of a half-hour or longer, according to Cirium.

Delays at some airports in the United States were well beyond an hour, according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration. The average delays at Kennedy International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, the world’s busiest airport, were nearly three hours.

Which airlines are most affected?

In the United States, at least five carriers — Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines and United — temporarily grounded flights, according to the F.A.A .

As of about 4 p.m. Eastern, more than 830 Delta flights had been canceled, and more than 1,220 had been delayed. American was reporting more than 360 flights canceled and more than 1,040 delayed. More than 380 United flights had been canceled and more than 1,260 were delayed, according to FlightAware.

The Dutch airline KLM canceled around 41 percent of flights on Friday, according to FlightAware. It has begun to recover, but advises passengers to check their flight status online before traveling. “We urge passengers not to come to the airport if their flight is not departing or is severely delayed,” the airline said in a statement.

Why weren’t some airlines, like Southwest, affected?

Southwest, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue Airways barely scrapped any flights on Friday. A spokesperson for Southwest said, “The outage did not directly affect our operations,” but did not elaborate on why.

Alaska does not use CrowdStrike, and its operations were “mostly unimpacted,” said Tricia Bruckbauer, a spokeswoman for the airline.

Which airports have been hit the worst?

In the United States, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta appeared to have the most flights affected by the outage, with a total of more than 590 incoming and outgoing flights canceled and more than 780 flights delayed as of midafternoon on Friday, according to FlightAware .

Many other airports, including hubs in New York, Chicago and Charlotte, N.C., also appeared to experience significant disruption. J.F.K. advised passengers not to show up to the airport without confirming flight status.

The outage also affected major airports in Europe. Several airlines at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam were unable to gain access to their check-in systems. The systems have since restarted, and the airport said it was working with airlines to “get all passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible.”

London’s busiest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick, said they were using contingency systems to get around the outage, but both were still reporting delays for almost half of their incoming and outgoing scheduled flights.

Hong Kong International Airport had to switch to manual check-in, but the airport reported that flight operations were not affected .

I’m flying today. What can I do?

Pack patience.

Delta , United , American , and Spirit have issued flight waivers allowing passengers to rebook without any additional fees. The terms and applicable airports vary. Generally, passengers are required to depart within a week.

Travelers can usually check itineraries through the airline’s website or app, but some travelers on Friday reported difficulties rebooking through the Delta and United apps.

You can also contact airline customer service by phone, though travelers posting on social media said that they had not been able to reach agents. But there are a few tricks you can try aside from the primary hotline: U.S. airlines have overseas customer service phone lines, easily found on the internet, and those agents can help too.

FlightAware can offer detailed data about delays and cancellations, and which airports are most affected, in real time.

What are my rights if my flight is delayed or canceled?

You may be entitled to certain compensation — such as airline-provided hotel or meal vouchers — detailed on the Transportation Department’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard .

The Transportation Department said the software outage is considered within airlines’ control and that airlines must follow through on their commitments to travelers, which for most United States-based carriers include complimentary ground transportation and accommodation for those affected by overnight delays and cancellations, as well as meal vouchers for waits exceeding three hours. Travelers should not expect to have this compensation offered to them, but are within their rights to ask the airlines for it.

“We have reminded the airlines of their responsibilities to take care of passengers if they experience major delays,” Mr. Buttigieg said in his CNBC appearance on Friday.

Passengers’ rights can differ for international flights . For example, in the European Union, cancellations or long delays may give you the right to a refund, a replacement flight and financial compensation. Passengers on flights delayed overnight may receive reimbursement for food, accommodations and ground transportation. (Travelers should hold on to any receipts for costs incurred.)

I have a cruise to catch. Will I get a refund if I miss the ship?

Cruise lines typically do not provide refunds, rebooking or any other concessions if flight disruptions cause travelers to miss their cruise departure, and the large companies are not making exceptions now.

But things look brighter for Carnival and Royal Caribbean passengers who booked their airfare through the cruise lines. Should they miss their departure, those travelers can expect benefits including coverage for flights, hotels and ground transportation to get them to the next port of call.

“Regrettably, air service disruptions — whether technological or weather — are beyond our company’s control,” said Chris Chiames, the chief communication officer for Carnival. “We always encourage our guests to purchase travel insurance, and today’s news is an important reminder of why.”

I have travel insurance. Am I covered?

Travel insurance companies are expecting an influx of claims, mostly for delays and missed connections, as a result of the outage.

One agency, InsureMyTrip , anticipated more than 1,600 of its customers could be affected by the outage, said Suzanne Morrow, the company’s chief executive. Policyholders may be entitled to coverage for their expenses related to delays, as well as coverage for any missed connecting flights, she said.

Any travelers hoping to file a travel insurance claim related to the outage should make sure to keep all their receipts or bills to show proof of purchase, as well as check their insurance plan or policy and file a claim right away.
