New UTA-endorsed app eases trip planning

(Courtesy of Utah Transit Authority) A screenshot from a transportation app, called Transit. The Utah Transportation Authority has partnered with it to help ease planning trips.

The Utah Transit Authority is partnering with what it says is North America’s leading transportation app — called Transit — to ease trip planning.

The agency is making Transit its endorsed app. It will allow riders to see bus and rail options for their trips — including real-time updates, and step-by-step navigation.

Through the app’s Transit+ feature, It also can offer connections to UTA services via bike sharing, scooter sharing and ride hailing services.

“UTA’s partnership with Transit makes using transit easier and more convenient,” UTA Interim Executive Director Steve Meyer said in a news release.

“UTA riders can receive accurate, real-time service information, while UTA benefits from customized app features, such as the ability to send important information directly to riders via Transit’s home screen.”

Among other transit agencies that have similar agreements with the Transit app are those in Boston, Baltimore, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Fla., Silicon Valley, Calif., and Montreal.

“Partnering with a single app that prioritizes transit makes it clear to riders where they can go for information,” said David Block-Schachter, Transit’s chief business officer. “We’re excited to work with UTA.”

The app is available in the App Store or Google Play. It can also be downloaded for iPhone and Android at www.transitapp.com/download or at www.rideuta.com

Plan Your Trip

Utah has the Wasatch Mountains and Salt Lake City to the north, the salt flats and Great Basin Desert to the west, red rock country and national parks to the south — and mountains, rivers, forests and state parks everywhere in between. Wherever you're headed, there's a local community and basecamp town to provide you important amenities and insider knowledge along the way. Without a several-week road trip, it’s hard to experience it all, so pick a region and itinerary to start with, then come back again and again.

Developer Resources

We offer much of our transit-related data through a publically available application programming interface (API). This interface is divided into two parts. The first part delivered via a downloadable GTFS file provides static data such as schedules, stop locations, etc. The second part available via a restful SIRI web service provides dynamic data including vehicle locations, predicted departure information, etc. Both are provided as a public service without any registration fees.

Write your app and then get it listed with UTA

Follow this check list in order to write your own software application against our API. When you're ready, you can request to have it listed on our App Center .

  • Review the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy .
  • Check the glossary to become familiar with transit terms.
  • Join our Google discussion group to ask questions and to stay notified of changes in the API.
  • Read about the Google GTFS format specifications . Start using the GTFS data feed .
  • Register for a token to use the real-time SIRI API (no cost) using the registration form .
  • Review the instructions on how to access the real-time SIRI API , and then begin using it.
  • Write an application. Check the Frequently Asked Questions ( FAQ ) to aid in this development.
  • When your application is ready, list it using the application form . Your submission must follow this criteria:
  • The application must work as claimed.
  • The application must comply with UTA’s Terms of Use.
  • The application must not use data copied (or "scraped") from UTA’s web sites.
  • UTA may edit submission text to fix errors, and so on.
