NEIGHBORHOOD REPORT: CHELSEA; Yachters Really Are Different

The 108-foot yacht Celtic Pride maneuvered through water sparkling in the late-afternoon sun to dock at Chelsea Piers the other day. As soon as it berthed, the couple who had chartered it out of Baltimore for a month made a beeline for the marina office to get oriented by the concierge there, pausing to tell a crew member that hors d'oeuvres at 5:30 sounded fine.
As the couple headed into Chelsea for a walk, a debarking stewardess in a white tennis shirt embroidered ''Celtic Pride'' caught sight of her ex-boyfriend, who crewed for the neighboring Utopia II. Loretta Maticke, another Utopia II crew member who used to work just blocks away at a legal services company in the Port Authority building, skated off to spend her break Rollerblading down the West Side bikeway.
Whether they're in from Cape May and heading to Sag Harbor the next day, like Celtic Pride, or docked next to the Sports Center for two months like Utopia II, large yachts come and go all summer at the four piers that make up the Chelsea Piers recreational complex. Their passengers and crew members mingle with golfers and bowlers, campers and wedding-goers, and because private yachts often have extremely wealthy owners eager for anonymity, they add a touch of undeniable glamour.
They set up housekeeping with personalized doormats and potted plants at the end of their gangways, bags of gourmet groceries from the Chelsea branch of Whole Foods on the galley counter and families of bikes and shoes lined against the dock railings.
''There are much prettier places to put a boat,'' said Ms. Maticke, surveying Chelsea Piers' acres of asphalt and metal siding, ''but this is convenient for the owners.''
The owners of her boat, a 116-foot Feadship, are J.R. and Loren Ridinger, who run a North Carolina-based company that sells retail products through individual distributors. Feadship is typically described as the Rolls-Royce of yachts. The Ridingers entertain clients aboard the Utopia II, and sleep there or at their apartment at the Battery Park Ritz-Carlton. Happily for them, their limousine can pull up nearly all the way to the boat.
Owners of large boats generally agree that they have minimal space to dock in Manhattan. The 79th Street Boat Basin, the Skyport Marina at East 23rd Street and the North Cove Marina in Battery Park City can also accommodate large transient yachts, but not as many as at Chelsea Piers.
Typical of owners who can be found there is Andrew McKelvey, a Manhattan resident who is chairman of Monster.com. His 115-foot, $10 million yacht Mostro is docked next to the skateboard park for a few weeks; he uses it to entertain clients with sunset dinner cruises. He usually keeps Mostro in Florida, even though its stern says it is registered in Georgetown, Cayman Islands. (This is done to save on taxes.)
Scott Seisler, the marina manager, is often asked by the curious whether the private yachts are owned by stars. His reply? ''Stars can't afford these kinds of toys. They're just gobs of money to run.''
For example, a 131-foot, 2002 Feadship is on the market for $24 million. The customary rule of thumb is that a yacht's value should not exceed the owner's annual income. Add annual operating costs of at least 10 percent of the boat's value, and you're well into business mogul range. At $5 per foot of yacht per day, dockage at Chelsea Piers is relatively affordable.
Almost from the moment the marina opened there in 1996, Ms. Maticke, 38, wished she could be working aboard a boat. From her old office in the Port Authority building on Eighth Avenue, she said, ''I'd been staring out at the Hudson River at all the boats going by for I don't know how many years.'' Now she is bone tired from her new kind of work, with a callus from opening Champagne bottles to boot. But she is rocked to sleep every night by the soft lapping of the waves. KAREN LOEW

Most of us want to be loved, so I’ve found it a trifle bizarre just how much the love interest role function gets the boot in modern critique. Obviously no one wants cardboard cut out characters, but far from love interest characters automatically being two dimensional, we can often see they’re more nuanced than given credit for, or melded with other interesting role functions . Love interests are often resigned to trophy position or prize for the main protagonist, but here are 20 Love Interests who are more than just the stereotype. Here’s our list of 20 types of love interest and why these characters are so important to the development of the STORY!
Romantic Love
1) Romeo & Juliet (from Romeo & Juliet )
Juliet thought she had found a solution, to fake her death and be reunited with Romeo. Ironically their families’ feud is only ended when united in grief … Cue the tears and tissues!
2) Han Solo & Princess Leia from the Star Wars Series
This feisty duo are capable of handling anything, even carbon-freezing can’t keep these two apart! Han Solo is the loveable rogue /supporting protagonist whose flaws can be overlooked as he is a substantial help in fighting the dark forces.

Sarah Connor is a badass mother devoted to protecting her son John at any cost. Her role as a maternal guardian is in the same vein other matriarchal archetypes such as Ripley in the Alien Series.
13) Meg & Sarah from Panic Room
Mother Meg and daughter Sarah are forced to fight for survival against a brutal group of burglars. Another example of a strong female character prepared to do anything to protect her daughter.

Possibly the most depressing film ever, but a deeply moving and realistic portrayal of the father-son relationship between Man and Boy driven by pure primal instinct to survive an apocalyptic world.

A true rags-to-riches story, the hero is determined to provide a better life for his young son. Overcoming various obstacles on the hero’s journey to accomplish his dream and motivating the audience to achieve their dreams in the process.

After near-death encounters with dinosaurs and the epic battle on top of the Empire State building, Ann is devastated to lose her friend and protector Kong. Ann’s fear over the course of the film becomes love.

Every Character Who Becomes Spider-Man In The FutureWhile Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099 is the most popular wall-crawler from the future, there are a few other heroes who carried on Spider-Man's legacy. Spider-Man encountered the X-Man known as Marrow a couple of times in costume, and the two characters unknowingly got a bit closer in the Spider-Man/Marrow one-shot by Scott Lobdell, Ale Garza, Pierre-Andre Dery, and Steve Buccellato.
