Visit Nakhchivan – The Best-Kept Secret of Azerbaijan You Don’t Want to Miss!

Discover Nakhchivan in Azerbaijan, a less-known destination worth a visit for an intrepid traveler. Check out my Nakchivan travel guide including the best things to do in Nakchivan, what it is, where it’s located, how to get there, what to see and do, where to stay, and how long to visit for.

Nakhchivan in Azerbaijan

Nakhchivan – have you ever heard of it? Chances are, you haven’t. I’ve only discovered it quite recently – and yet, fell in love with it after! Before traveling there, I couldn’t find that much useful information online, so I’ve decided to share it here for any future travelers making their way to the Nakchivan Republic.

After all, Azerbaijan is not specifically of travelers’ top visited countries either, even though it should be!

Nakchivan is often overlooked by travelers, who are not even aware of the existence of this part of Azerbaijan. It is accessible only by air, or by crossing through borders of the surrounding countries. However, those who venture here are in for a real treat. From ancient mausoleums to stunning mountain landscapes, Nakhchivan has it all.

In fact, with its tiled mausoleums, dry deserted areas, and the mountains, it reminded me of Central Asia and Uzbekistan .

Nakhchivan – what is it exactly?

Nakhchivan is an autonomous republic of Azerbaijan, separated from the other part of the country.

Iran borders it to the south and west, Armenia to the north and east, and Turkey to the west. Nakhchivan is one of the oldest and most historic regions in the country, with a rich cultural and architectural heritage.

Nakhchivan is located in the southwestern part of Azerbaijan, but it’s separated from the rest of the country by Armenia. The region is landlocked and has a mountainous landscape, with the highest peak being Mount Kapudzhukh.

Unfortunately, you cannot easily access Nakhchivan by land from the other part of Azerbaijan, due to the conflict with Armenia. But there are other ways to get to Nakhchivan. The easiest and most common way is by air, as the Nakhchivan International Airport is well-connected to other major cities in the country.

Azerbaijan Airlines operates several local flights a day from Baku. They have a set price for a ticket, but that doesn’t change. At the beginning of 2023, I paid 70 AZN for the ticket one way. However, I can recommend you book tickets early, as the seats can get sold out since many locals take that journey. You can book it here .

There are also several international flights from nearby countries, including Iran and Turkey.

What to see and do in Nakhchivan? Top things to do in Nakchivan

Nakhchivan has a lot to offer, from historic sites to natural monuments and ancient landmarks. It’s also nice to see a different side of Azerbaijan and explore the rich history of the region. But my favorite place is, of course, the mountains (and an ancient fortress there!).

silkway travel naxcivan

Alinja castle is the place that I first saw when I read about Nakhchivan, and I knew I need to visit it. It reminded me of Machu Picchu . In fact, many people call it the mini Machu Picchu of Azerbaijan . If you look at the photos of it below, you’ll know why. Would you agree? 🙂

This ancient fortress dates back to the 6th century and is located on top of a mountain overlooking the stunning mountainous and deserted landscape.

The castle lies on top of a mountain, 1,811m above sea level. To get there, you need to climb quite steep stairs, which takes around 30-40 minutes, depending on your stamina and the heat of the day. There are around 2000 steps to cover!

I recommend getting there early in the morning to have the site all to yourself. Or even better, come in winter, as we did – and you will be there entirely alone. Nothing beats standing on top of the mountain, looking at the ancient fortress below, staring at the mountains in the background, listening to the condors flying above, and watching the wildlife. Yes, we’ve seen a group of mountain goats and wolves hunting them!

Alinja castle was definitely a highlight of my Nakhchivan trip and I would certainly go there again.

To get there from Nakhchivan town, we rented a taxi from our hotel for a day. The driver was waiting for us at the bottom of the mountain. Alternatively, you can take this Alinja and Ashabi-Kahf tour, which covers two destinations in one.

Ashab-i Kehf Cave is located between Alinja Castle and Nakhchivan city, so you can visit it on the same trip.

People believe that this cave is the location where the Seven Sleepers, a group of seven Christian youths, sought refuge from persecution.

Duzdag Cave and the Therapy Center is a hospital created inside the salt caves. The entrance to the salt cave is free. However, you cannot take any backpacks with you, so leave them in the hotel, or at the entrance of the caves.

You can walk along the main walking path up to the entrance to the hospital area, which is only accessible by the patients. It’s pretty surreal to be inside surrounded by 130 million tons of natural salt. Worth a visit!

To get there, take a taxi from Nakchivan city.

Nakhchivan is home to several ancient landmarks, including the mausoleum of Nizami, the Prophet Noah’s tomb, and the Momine Khatun Mausoleum.

Here are the top attractions of Nakhchivan city:

  • Yezidabad Castle – the castle is not much more than a fortress on the hill, and a small museum in the middle (which was always closed when I was there), but it’s a perfect place to see the sunset from! The sun falls down onto Aras Dam Lake over Iran and it’s magical.
  • Noah’s Mausoleum is located just next to the fortress. This mausoleum is dedicated to the Prophet Noah and is believed to be the burial place of his son.
  • The Palace of Nakhchivan Khans was built in the 18th century and is known for its impressive architecture and design. Sadly, the interiors were closed when I was there.
  • Momine Khatun Mausoleum was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to Momine Khatun, the wife of the ruler of the Atabek dynasty.
  • An open-air museum just outside the mausoleum shows the ancient stone artifacts that were discovered in Nakhchivan.
  • Juma Mosque was originally built in the 12th Century.
  • Local bazaar – a very small market, but it’s nice to see what a market is like in Nakhchivan
  • Yusif ibn Kuseyir Mausoleum built in the 12th century
  • Nakhchivan State History Museum
  • Muzeum Heydər Əliyev

Qarabaghlar Mausoleum is located 40km north of Nakhchivan city, and it’s the most beautiful mausoleum in Nakhchivan. This unique tomb was built in the 12th century and is known for its intricate brickwork and beautiful carvings. It reminded me of Samarkand in Uzbekistan .

The city is home to several historic landmarks, including the Julfa Cemetery and the Church of St. Stephanos.

Shahbuz National Park by the border with Armenia is a place to relax in the mountains and lakes.

silkway travel naxcivan

Ilandagh is a very recognizable mountain, with an elevation of 2,415 meters above sea level, which makes it visible from Nakhchivan City. According to the legend, Noah’s Ark changed the shape of Ilandagh, cracking it in the middle. You can see Ilandagh from Alinja castle, and you will pass it on the way there from the city.

Where to stay in Nakhchivan?

Nakhchivan accommodation is not very extensive. There are no budget hotels, but the ones that are moderately priced are also very good.

Some of the best hotels in Nakhchivan are Saat Meydani Nakhchivan , where I stayed and felt like in a palace (delicious breakfast included!). My friends also recommended Tebriz Hotel Nakhchivan .

silkway travel naxcivan

Nakhchivan is relatively small, but it’s worth staying there a few days after you made the journey all the way there. I recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Nakhchivan to fully experience all that the region has to offer.

silkway travel naxcivan

Nakhchivan is a less-known destination, that is certainly worth a visit. From exploring ancient landmarks to discovering natural wonders, there’s something for everyone in this unique and off-the-beaten-path destination. So pack your bags and get ready for an adventure in Nakhchivan!

Exploring the unexplored in Azerbaijan - Naxcivan and beyond!

Updated: Oct 18, 2023

In one of the most remote corners of Central Asia lies an autonomous republic that virtually no tourists visit. It’s home to one of the most picturesque secrets of Azerbaijan.

silkway travel naxcivan

This place is called Naxcivan - it’s an exclave - meaning it shares a border with Turkey, Iran and Armenia but not Azerbaijan. Fascinated yet? Yeah, I was too. I first read about it many years ago in BBC as one of the most ‘sustainable’ nations and it piqued my interest.

silkway travel naxcivan

We decided to hop on a plane, took another one hour flight from Baku and landed in this unbelievably beautiful little corner of a mainstream country. We wandered through the empty roads, crushed on gorgeous minarets and fell in love with every part of Naxcivan.

Highlights & Itinerary:

Naxcivan - 2 days

Qabala - 2 days

Baku - 2 days

Guide Information

Where We Stayed

Final Thoughts

Flights + Visa

We flew directly with Fly Dubai - just a short two and half hour flight took us to Baku.

Now if you want to head to Naxcivan - there are two ways to do so. You can either via fly Baku with Azerbaijan airlines or fly from Istanbul. We flew from Baku - just one hour way. The flight costs $80/person both ways. I tried to book online but I was unsuccessful, so I had our guide book it for us at the local offices. I suggest you do the same, to avoid issues. The flights do tend to fill fast from Baku - so plan ahead and book your tickets well in advance.

If you are an Indian passport holder, living in the UAE, you can easily apply for the visa online, pay $26. We got ours by email in 24 hours. Immigration took 2 minutes; I was wondering if they will ask me about my visit to Armenia but no questions asked.

silkway travel naxcivan

Azeri is the main language spoken. We noticed that some people speak English in Baku but once you enter the villages, they only speak the local language.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit is spring or Fall. We went in February to experience snow. Naxcivan in particular was just lovely this time of year. If you plan to do hikes, then summer is best.

Dollars in the city but local currency is better for Naxcivan and in the smaller towns.

Hiring a guide vs Independent travel

You don't need a guide if you are looking to cover just Baku. If you plan to venture out of the city, I highly recommend guide + driver.

For Naxcivan , you definitely need a guide to book tickets and take you around. There aren't very many of them though. I recommend contacting Naxcivan Travel on whatsapp (+994 70 2121213). He is the most reliable person offering a tour there. We had the best time.

For the rest of Azerbaijan, you can contact Tair (+994 55 268 76 58). He was punctual and very reasonably priced. He will also give you wonderful hotel suggestions to suit any budget.

How much time to spend in the country? You can spend anywhere from 5-10 days depending on what you plan to do and how much you want to drive. I would say carve out 2-3 days just for Naxcivan. That was the highlight of the trip for us.

Where we stayed.

In Baku we stayed at the Landmark hotel . It is correctly priced, and located right in the middle of the city with easy access to the old city.

In Naxcivan, you have two choices - both are about the same price too. We stayed in Grand Naxcivan hotel.

Vegetarian Food

Like with most of Central Asia, the cuisine is meat based. As a vegetarian, you can ask to customize the dishes. We tried the local saj and qutabs . Both delicious and freshly made. You can also find a whole lot of hot tea and bakhalava at every stop.

Alinja Fortress

First up, the main feature and probably one of the most breathtaking views in all of Azerbaijan - the Alinja Fortress.

silkway travel naxcivan

This place is often called the ‘Machu Pichu’ of Eurasia owing to its epic location and composition. Sitting atop a cragged mountaintop, it’s a reconstructed former fortress. It was legendary for being impenetrable, in fact the struggle to conquer lasted 14 years. The Mongol leader Tamerlane eventually conquered and destroyed it.

As we hiked our way up 1800 steps to reach this point on a freezing cold day, I could certainly imagine what a well-protected place this must have been. The highlight for me though was the panoramic view of the northern Iranian mountains. Uffff. If you can only visit one place in Naxcivan, this should be it.

Qarabaglar Mausoleum

Next up is my favorite monument in Naxcivan - the Qarabaglar mausoleum, located about 40 kms from the main city.

silkway travel naxcivan

It’s well worth the effort of driving to this tiny village. This striking blue tile work on this structure along with the two minarets will instantly remind you of the monuments in Samarkhand, Uzbekistan.

So cool right? It’s astonishing how much overlapping history and culture you find in remote corners of the world.

silkway travel naxcivan

Noah’s Mausoleum

Said to be the resting place of Noah, the details on these monuments deserve a whole post.

The oldest mosque in Naxcivan as seen from the fortress walls of the Yezidabad castle

silkway travel naxcivan

Momine Khatun Mausoleum

A monument dedicated in loving memory of the wife of a former ruler. I liked two things about this one - first, the inscription on the walls; look closely you will find allah written over a thousand time and second, the room beneath the mausoleum which stands to date on a single pillar.

Khan’s Palace

Located right next to the Momine masouleum, this former palace is now home to beautiful arrifcats from a bygone era. The most cool feature was the mirror room.

Gulustan Mausoleum

One more distinct monument, this one stands out in two ways - the pinkish color of the tiles and the bright red mountains in the background. Such a stunner!

Snake mountain or Ilandag mountain

If you are a person who lives the outdoor hikes, then I recommend you travel in the summer just to hike up the Snake Mountain in Naxcivan.

One of the oldest salt mines in the region

silkway travel naxcivan

We had a couple different options to choose from - Sheki or Quba or Qabala. We went with Qabala as it was the most scenic route of the lot and the shortest of the drives from Baku city. The road trip did not disappoint. Apart from Naxcivan, we visited Qabala in Azerbaijan. Located about 200 kms from Baku city, a three hour drive from the city will take you to this forest area.

We stopped in the forest to watch local Babushkas making the most delicious fresh veggie Qutabs (dough rolled thin & cooked with meat or veggies or cheese).

Then we took a hike up to a waterfall, and walked around the partly frozen Nohur Lake. The lake reminded us of the Lake Bohinj in Slovenia. So pretty and blue, the winter vibes were spot on.

If slow living is your thing, this is the place to do it. No matter when you go, Qabala offers something for everyone - from skiing in the winter to wine tasting in the spring to mesmerizing forest drivers in the Fall. It will be a worthy addition to your Azerbaijan trip.

The last few days of our trip was focused on the beautiful capital city. With its long coastline, and modern buildings, this bustling city has a lot to offer for travelers. We are not city people, but what I loved most was the old meets new vibe the city had.

silkway travel naxcivan

Here are a bunch of must-see places when in the city:

📌 Carpet museum on the seaside boulevard makes for a stellar backdrop

silkway travel naxcivan

📌 View of the city from Highland Park. Get up close to the iconic flame towers by hiking up to Highland Park

📌 Icherisheher Fortress walls

silkway travel naxcivan

📌 Old City - this was my personal favorite

📌 Heydar Aliyev Center

📌 Nizami street vibes

📌 Bibi Heybat mosque

Said to be built in the 13th century, it is a little unusual because it is believed that this was the only building that was destroyed under Stalin’s rule; then reconstructed. Today it is an elaborately decorated mosque, with interiors in green and gold and is a resting place for Ukeyma Khanjm, a descendant of Muhammad. It reflects the Shirvan architecture and has three domes. You can also see the views of the Caspian sea from here. Definitely check out the inside if you go here.

Final thoughts

This is a place many people outside of the gulf region will struggle to place on a map. If you are a resident of the middle east countries, this is an easy win with it's simple visa process. From skyscrapers to idyllic villages, this country will is a contrasting mix of a futuristic vision that meets the former Soviet Union vibe.

The skyline is a breath of fresh air, compared to the more simple Georgia and Armenia. Set beneath the Caucasus mountain range, you will find fascinating muddy volcanoes, Parisian style boulevards and picturesque corners in this country.

silkway travel naxcivan

I love how simple it was to plan this trip. As much as I enjoy a challenge, sometimes easy wins are the way to go. I hope I have inspired some of you to add the dazzling Naxcivan to your travel plans this year. It is so refreshing to find gems like this, quietly tucked away in relatively unknown corners of the world.

Hi! I am trying to get a visa (US citizen) to Azerbaijan and found a great company who will do it for cheap (30 USD) if you book the hotel through them. We were really excited and did all the forms and copies, etc and when it came to payment, we had issues. They said the only way we could pay was by bank transfer, which I was uncomfortable with in the first place, but decided to go ahead. My bank did not recognize their Azeri bank but said that was okay, they just needed the address and phone number, which is standard info they ask for with an international wire transfer. When I asked Silkway travel for the info, they said that their accountant said its not needed and then basically refused to give me that info. Again, this seems suspect. I am wondering if anyone else has had experience with them. Is it usual for a company to not have any other way to receive payment? I paid with credit card for things in Ethiopia and Nepal, its shocking this "well known" agency is limited so much by bank transfer, let alone not wanting to give the info that the client states it needs......

' class=

Standard procedure here in Canada.....no address no transfer. Bank transfer is most likely your only option for almost all of the former soviet states.

By the way, what do you mean by "well known" agency? I just did a search for them on the Azerbaijan forum and they have never been mentioned.

silkway travel naxcivan

I am not surprised. Count your blessings for the hang ups. Silkway has been active on Azerbaijan forums and much misrepresentation of truths if I might add. I was warned about using bank transfers so I never did it.... It's against the law (lol at Law.. Please) to transfer more than $1000 USD. If you do, you need documentation like crazyyyyy and everyone is afraid to sign it, so monies will sit there forever (2mths even).

We went in there 2 months ago inquiring deals on japan and Taiwan travel. We waited patiently until the lady finished her call and asked her about travel deals. She just pointed us to the wall and said go find it there. We told her that we already looked there and didn't see anything. To be honest, I already checked online and saw that there is something so that was online but I didn't tell her that. We told her that we are looking to book because we are going to attend a wedding in Taiwan in March. The lady took down our information and said will contact us afterwards. I am not sure if it because we look young and think we can't afford to travel or she thinks we are not serious on our trip planning but up till this day we still weren't contacted. I will not give business or recommend any of my friends to this travel agency ever!

I love Silkway at Crystal Mall! Best travel agency for cruises, flights, and tours. 1st class asian specialists are always ready to help. Professional, courteous, and trust worthy. Prices are the best especially for tours to asia. I like their 3 day Portland sightseeing and shopping tour.

Antarctica cruises.

It is a profound experience to set eyes upon Antarctica for the first time. Breathtaking vistas, otherworldly wildlife and the journey itself leave an indelible mark on visitors. Here is a land of paradoxes: the world's biggest desert that is also the world's largest ice sheet, nearly two miles thick. Virtually unexplored just 150 years ago, this continent belongs to no nation, and is protected by an international treaty for peaceful scientific pursuit. Explore the “White Continent” in Viking comfort with an Antarctica expedition.

Highlights of antarctica cruises.

Few places are as otherworldly as Antarctica, with its raw sculpted landscapes awash in blue and white. Here nature is at its most flawless—an experience sure to transform visitors. The ideal time to explore is the Antarctic summer, starting in November when cold, windy weather turns to 24-hour sunlight and temperatures rise to a comfortable 32° F. The ice melts, unlocking frozen seaways. Activities maximize your interaction and virtually all are included: explore by RIB, kayak, submarine, zodiac and more. Here are some highlights you may experience during your journey:

  • Catch a glimpse of Gentoo penguins, Weddel seals and blue whales
  • Shore landings offer amazing opportunities for wildlife viewing
  • Included RIB excursions present stunning scenery for photos
  • Cross-country ski or snowshoe into the peninsula’s interior
  • Excursions include an undersea dive in a panoramic submarine
  • As a citizen scientist, assist onboard scientists with research
  • Gain bragging rights for crossing the legendary Drake Passage
