Boat builder preparing to set sail four years after becoming stranded in WA town

High and dry in a boat yard in Carnarvon sits what looks like a big red pirate ship.

But the skipper is no pirate, in fact he's quite the good Samaritan.

Four years ago, seasoned sailor and boat builder Wolfgang Lantzberg found himself stranded in Carnarvon when the town's harbour, known as the Fascine, became too shallow for his 22-metre boat, the Hybrid Arc.

So, the 75-year-old saw it as an opportunity to get to work rebuilding 10 14-foot windrush yachts for the Carnarvon Yacht Club.

"They were almost ready for the tip," Carnarvon Yacht Club's number one member, Barry Scott, said.

"But Wolf has rebuilt and resurrected them and now the yacht club has them for anyone who wants to come down and sail them on a Sunday.

"They've got to know how to swim and wear a life jacket."

Mr Scott said Mr Lantzberg's generous efforts have earnt him an honorary membership of the yacht club.

"It was bad for him but good for our yacht club," Mr Scott said.

Mr Lantzberg and his boat are no strangers to public interest after the vessel was run aground on Broome's Cable Beach in 2016, when the skipper needed to stop in town for some grocery shopping.

And this week, the perfect conditions arose for the retired civil engineer to embark on his next adventure, with some elaborate help from his friends.

Elaborate, as it required some heavy machinery to move the Hybrid Arc from the boat yard and into the bay, including a 20-tonne crane and 936 Bobcat.

"The crane will act as an additional break, otherwise it might take off," Mr Lantzberg said.

The launch was a success.

Mr Lantzberg is now on his way into a solo circumnavigation of Australia, where he will sail east, before taking the daring route of the "roaring forties", across the bottom end of Australia, to Tasmania and then back up the east coast.

"I have the confidence in the boat, and I think I still can do it," he said.

He said sailing solo was a special feeling.

"After a few days, all problems disappear," he said.

"It's just you, the ocean, and your boat.

"Nothing else matters; it is a wonderful feeling."

Onboard, Mr Lantzberg has solar power, desalination, and enough supplies to last him for six months.

"We wish him all of the best and hopefully he comes all the way back to Carnarvon," Mr Scott said.

Bakewell-White 8 impresses on debut in Perth

'The new BW8 got a good workover on debut in the fresh Perth breeze.'

Stepping ashore from a session which varied from 12 to 20 knots on Matlida Bay, we caught up with sailmaker Paul Eldrid. 'This boat is really well balanced, it literally sails itself uphill. Even when we deliberately over powered her with a Code 1 jib in 20 knots, we couldn’t lose her upwind. We tried to break the rudder free but it just wouldn’t let go' he said.

A very satisfied builder, Peter Milner, added his thoughts. 'The boat has great form stability, good feel and responsiveness, and is very easy to sail. Brett (the designer) really got the design right with this boat. From the sailing we’ve done so far, we haven’t found any bad habits, and there is no misbehaving even in the gusty and wind shear conditions around 22 knots we had the other day.'

Observations from the chase boat and looking over the photos of the test sessions have pleased the project co-ordinators. The ergonomic’s of the walk around foredeck worked well during testing and will be terrific for both training and racing purposes. The simple systems and well positioned layout of the controls make the boat easy for crew through all the manouveres. Downhill the BW8 is slippery, she pops onto the plane early, is lively, and responds well to good downwind helming.

The all round performance, her lines, modern cockpit layout, and the quality of the finished product are a credit to the efforts of WA's leading yacht club's and their design and construction partners in the BW8 project. The yacht well matches the range of uses that are intended by clubs and is also appealling to the private market.

'She is a quick, exciting, and powerful little boat 'perhaps a fraction more so than originally intended by the working party' said RPYC Vice Commodore Mark Fitzhardinge. 'We don’t think that’s a negative, particularly because of the huge amount of interest from local, national and international potential owners since the launch. She may need a small spinnaker added to the sail wardrobe, and the smaller headsail will certainly come into play early for training purposes, and with youngsters and novices. We're delighted with the final product - right on the target of what we wanted.'

The BW8 features an interesting cockpit layout.

RPYC's order of 6 will see boats 2 and 3 arrive next week. It is understood that RFBYC are close to firming up their order, and that SOPYC will follow after that. There has been confirmed interest from a further 6 private buyers not involved in the clubs' acquisitions. The RPYC purchase program will see the class regularly racing on Saturday's following the completion of their 6th boat in mid December.

Windrush 14 multihulls converge in Dunsborough for state titles

Perfect sailing conditions and a fleet of 30 boats from across WA converged at the weekend for an outstanding state titles regatta at the Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club.

Participating in the Windrush 14 multihull class - one of WA's most popular competitive sailing classes - were the state's best Windrush yachties from Busselton, Dunsborough, Augusta, Esperance, and Geraldton.

Held over the March weekend, it was an intense three days of sailing with conditions challenging even the most experienced sailors resulting in multiple equipment failures, capsizing and on-the-edge 25 knot wind gusts.

The regatta, an annual event for the Windrush 14 Association of WA, was orchestrated by DBYC vice commodore Craig Saunders who said he was thrilled by the turnout and conditions.

"DBYC has a solid monohull background with Lasers and Pacers but the past two years have seen the club pivot slightly to this robust, exciting boat.

"Seven Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club boats fought it out on the water over the three-day regatta," he said.

Mr Saunders said hosting the event in Dunsborough was a triumph for the region and small club.

"There were a lot of very happy faces at our presentation ceremony on Sunday night, and it was outstanding to have a number of intergenerational crews competing."

The event was divided into three sub-categories including ' Cat Rig ' (solo skipper and mainsail only), ' Sloop rig ' (two crew, mainsail and jib), and ' Super-Sloop ' (one sailor, main and jib with trapeze employed for keeping the boat balanced).

Esperance Bay Yacht Club's Paul Waters took out the top spot for the Cat Rig division, while the Sloop Rig honour went to Koombana Bay Yacht Club's father-son crew Jason and Daniel Watchorn.

Geographe Bay Yacht Club's Super-Sloop helmsman Cliff Rolf mastered the variable conditions of the six-race regatta to win in his division.

DBYC's rear commodore John Lethlean, who competed in a club-owned boat, said the regatta was the most enjoyable he had participated in.

"I am a dedicated monohull sailor," he said

"But have to concede the big winds and sheer speed of the cats left me gagging for more.

"I cannot wait for this event to come around again in 2024.

"It showed the south west off at its best," he said.
