Royal Huisman

The contemporary flybridge schooner, SEA EAGLE II, nowadays SEA EAGLE, is a true sailing yacht. This 81m / 266ft  beauty immediately earned her place alongside the shipyard’s Athena in the elite club of the world’s 10 largest sailing yachts. Delivered in 2020 under the shadow of the pandemic, SEA EAGLE II’s arrival on the superyacht scene was inevitably low-key.

Following her extensive world exploration, and with over 45,000 nm under her keel, Royal Huisman is pleased to set matters right and place this magnificent schooner in the spotlight she deserves: please find the article “THE SEA EAGLE SOARS” [ link ].

DATA & DIMENSIONS

SEA EAGLE is currently Royal Huisman’s largest yacht. Project 410, the 85m / 280ft sloop, will take over this title on delivery. Nearly 60 years of aluminum yacht-building experience have provided the shipyard with a level of expertise in constructing hulls of this material that few shipyards can match. This is especially true for sailing yachts of this size. The advantages are equally large: lightness, acceleration, strength and fuel-efficiency being just a few characteristics of a true sailing yacht versus a heavy, sail-assisted motor yacht.

The brief for SEA EAGLE was to create an extremely comfortable and spacious yacht with good sea keeping and exceptional amenities for both guests and crew. She had to offer outstanding passage-making performance so that the owner could take in as much of the world under sail as possible. She had to be a true sailor’s yacht – practical, powerful, safe and easily managed. Finally, she had to be functional, favoring simplicity and reliability over unnecessary frills.

Sea Eagle II: One of the world’s finest superyachts

  • Toby Hodges
  • July 5, 2023

Stunning images of the 81m schooner Sea Eagle II in French Polynesia are a rare chance to see one of the world’s most magnificent superyachts in full flight. Toby Hodges finds out more from the team behind the design

yacht sea eagle 2

It’s very rare to see quite such a large vessel, the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht in this case, truly in its element: sailing full bore in an idyllic location. To us sailing fans, it’s the equivalent of a birdwatcher photographing an exceptional species of finch, kingfisher or indeed eagle. With regards to Sea Eagle II , however, these images really do make you re-evaluate your impressions of scale.

We’ve talked in detail about this superyacht before, when it was just a vision, a project in build. But these pictures, showing it in full flight, help bring a long list of impressive technical statistics to life.

While there are many big yachts, there are very few sailing yachts as large as this – officially eight, but of those considered proper sail-powered rather than sail-assisted yachts, arguably only three. And certainly very few we’ve seen that can sail like this: seemingly with relative ease, control, power and grace.

The extensive photoshoot in French Polynesia shows Sea Eagle II really shifting under its own easily furled canvas. This should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Dykstra Naval Architects. Look at the spray flying off the towering stemhead – this is no sailing motoryacht. From bow-on you can see the hull is comparatively very slender, with purposeful chines and a flare to the topsides aft. The waterline is fully extended as the sections transition from a rounded U-shape bilge forward to a flat run aft.

yacht sea eagle 2

Long waterlines together with a modern, beamy aft shape helps create massive volume, powerful performance and low heeling speed. Photo: Tim McKenna

Combine this with the long glass deckhouse and it reminds of a modern explorer yacht or a naval craft. Its hull lines are strikingly efficient, purposeful even. Her 6m draught aside, you get the impression there is nowhere Sea Eagle II can’t soar to. That it has already completed a circumnavigation and sailed 45,000 miles in its first three years is less surprising when you consider just how long legged it is – indeed the crew and designers have reported sustained passagemaking speeds of over 20 knots.

But why the look, why that sailplan, and how did it get from concept to sailing in Pacific islands?

A classic start

The initial brief was actually for a more classical yacht, similar to the 90m schooner Athena that Royal Huisman built for Jim Clark in 2004, before the owner realised he’d prefer the benefits that come with a more modern shape with straight lines. This allowed for a much longer waterline and beamy transom for more stability, volume and comfort at less heel.

Passagemaking performance aboard a practical and safe yacht to manage easily was the target. Sea Eagle II was commissioned by an ageing owner who wanted a large, stable and easily driven yacht – which is why it ended up being twice the length and three times the volume and sail area of the previous Sea Eagle , a 43m yacht which launched from Huisman in 2015.

yacht sea eagle 2

The modern look came from Dykstra’s Erik Wassen, lead naval architect for the project, who I caught up with to discuss how the design transpired and if it has fulfilled its brief. Where a classic yacht “has lots of details to give it life – I thought a round bilge boat with no detail on it is just incredibly dull,” he replies candidly. This helps explain the yacht’s prominent chine, “single aft, turning into a double chine forward, to give it detail,” while in the transom the topsides are inverted, and have some negative camber. “That’s what your eye picks up – it emphasises that masculine look.”

As well as the aesthetic trickery, it’s a shape that works from a naval architecture point of view too: “the knuckle gave me more beam in the forward end of the boat where we have the foremast. The chainplates can be separated more without having too much flare in the boat.”

yacht sea eagle 2

To manage this canvas, 34 winches can all be pushbutton controlled from the helm stations. Photo: Tim McKenna

Sea Eagle II ’s striking styling is set off by the long deckhouse with its straight glass windows, which cements an explorer look. The UK’s Mark Whitely, who designed the interior, drew this profile. “We went with that and explored it further to sink the bridge half into the superstructure to keep the overall height limited,” Wassen explains.

A schooner rig featuring three carbon masts with furling booms was deemed the most effective way to give Sea Eagle II  the most manageable sail power at the Panamax limit (61m). Dynarigs, as used on the Dykstra projects Maltese Falcon and Black Pearl , were not appropriate for an owner who preferred more classic styles. And while Wassen says they did consider square-top sails, the additional complication was considered too high at the time (around 2017). Instead, the three heavily roached mains have proven to provide ample sail area.

Royal Huisman’s sister company Rondal built the three equal size high modulus carbon masts, as well as the furling booms, captive and drum winches, while Carbo-Link supplied the carbon standing rigging.

Straightforward sailing

The beauty of the sailplan is that it can set so much canvas on easily managed push button furlers. The 34 winches are all interfaced and controlled by Rondal’s integrated sail handling system. The Stratis-built fore, main and mizzen sails can raise simultaneously thanks to plenty of hydraulic juice powered by twin 120kW gensets and power take-offs on the main engines.

When you include the staysails that can set off each mast and the yankee, there are seven furling sails from Doyle, totalling around 3,500m2. And that’s without a kite (which the new owners are looking into adding, with rumours of future racing events such as the RORC Caribbean 600 ).

“Tacking is very straightforward,” reported Royal Huisman’s commissioning skipper: “the mains mostly look after themselves with only minor adjustments.

“Gybing naturally takes a little more orchestration, as on any large yacht. But it is still a smooth and safe process.”

yacht sea eagle 2

Side decks you could fit a skittle alley on, yet protected by high bulwarks. Photo: Tim McKenna

The yankee sheet has the most load, but even that’s on an 18-tonne pull winch, which is reasonably common in large yachts. To depower the sailplan, the crew typically reef from the mizzen first, with the reefs all on halyard locks.

In terms of performance, this is a mile-munching machine. “In a good breeze, on a beam reach, with reefed sails, it does 20 knots comfortably without pushing it,” Wassen reports. This is confirmed by Huisman’s commissioning skipper who reported high boat speeds that are easy to maintain: “We comfortably recorded 22 knots in moderate wind conditions. In fact, at 16-18 knots boat speed, I found myself regularly checking the B&G speed displays for confirmation because the motion is so relaxed. Sailing fast with just a gentle heel [typically max 10-15°], she feels very safe.”

Wassen stresses it’s never had a race crew aboard, so has never been pushed. “We know the boat has been doing sustainable 20 knot+ deliveries… so I think the performance polars we made are doable.”

yacht sea eagle 2

Palatial space at anchor. Transom hinges to create a full beach terrace. Lazarette includes a crane for the 8m guest tender plus toy space. Photo: Tim McKenna

He attributes the commendable performance to the long waterlines, where buttocks slowly rise to a transom that is only just clear of the water. But credit must go equally to the stiff and strong build. Typically yachts of this scale are built in steel, which results in a much heavier structure. Royal Huisman are masters in large aluminium craft and this, its largest to date, helped them further the technology – learnings which have continued to progress with the launch of its recent full performance yacht Nilaya and the colossal 85m sloop in build.

The complexity of Sea Eagle II ’s build, and its four years in engineering and construction, cannot be understated. The goal was to find the right balance between strength and flex, the former to ensure the necessary longitudinal strength and rigidity, the latter to absorb the dynamic shock loads from waves.

yacht sea eagle 2

Glass doesn’t bend

An example of such a construction challenge lay with how to mount such a long, rigid deckhouse structure, which comprises so much laminated glass, onto a more flexible aluminium hull. “When we were doing the FEM [finite element method] analysis, we noticed that the glass mullions would be picking up a lot of the load,” Wassen explains: “the deck is participating in the overall structure and a boat with this beam will deflect and bend in waves.”

As glass won’t flex, the build team needed to include some tolerance between the roof and mullions. Aerospace specialists developed an adhesive specially for this project, using it to bond the forward section of the deckhouse to create 2cm of flex.

yacht sea eagle 2

This long run of glass is central to the overall aesthetic, something Mark Whitely elaborates on: “The essence of the yacht’s appeal is illustrated by long, uninterrupted lines of glass, a subtle sweep of superstructure and a blister to enclose the semi-raised bridge.

“The proportions and low profile were driven by the owner’s request to have a continuous floor from the exterior dining space, right through the large main saloon to the forward dining saloon, with no steps.” The photos confirm side decks you could bowl down, and fore and aft decks clear enough for racket sports.

yacht sea eagle 2

The formal dining and leisure area at the forward end of the deckhouse. The curved, forward windscreen gives a panoramic outlook. Photo: Tim McKenna

Elsewhere on deck there are foldout boarding platforms on both sides. Outside and inside worlds are separated by flush sliding glass doors which disappear into their own garages, while steps each side of the dining area lead to the expansive flybridge to offer another full deck of entertaining space and an ideal vantage point to helm from.

Another prime feature of Sea Eagle II’s design is the full bridge nestled between flybridge helm station and the main deckhouse, from which it can be commanded in heavy weather. Deciding at which of the many long tables to sit or relax at would seemingly be the only headache for owners and guests. Whether alfresco on the aft deck, inside/outside bar seating, the decksaloon or a formal dining and leisure area forward with 180° windscreen views, all are on the same level.

The main accommodation is for 12 guests, while forward of the foremast is a separate low profile entrance for the 14 crew to reach their quarters. The stowage space for toys is formidable, complete with cranes to launch all with minimal fuss.

However, while it offers palatial comfort at anchor, this is a yacht that clearly comes alive under sail. In summary, these photos prove what the jury at the Design & Innovation Awards 2021 said when awarding Sea Eagle II with the ‘Best Naval Architecture Sailing Yachts’ award. “She is not just a large cruising yacht with global capability but a beautiful boat that sails well.”

The owner is an experienced yachtsman who drew up his Sea Eagle II wish list while sailing aboard his previous 142-foot sloop (also named Sea Eagle ). His next yacht had to be bigger—much bigger, in fact, at almost twice the length and five times more interior volume.

Royal Huisman's 266-foot "Sea Eagle II" sailing superyacht has made a successful return to Europe from a four-year trip around the world.

At the same time, the owner demanded outstanding sailing performance. (The owner and captain both declined interviews about the voyage, but Royal Huisman provided extensive notes about the yacht after it traveled thousands of miles.)

That kind of new technology required extensive planning. Before the build commenced, a virtual model of the yacht was built, tested, refined and re-tested for over six months. It was a smart move, considering the yacht’s technical specs, both above and below the waterline. Beneath the hull, Sea Eagle II ‘s 16-foot-long, massive rudder—the largest carbon-composite rudder ever produced—is fitted with fiber-optic sensors laminated into the blade to provide real-time performance data, such as torque and deflection. That level of data not only helps while racing but also optimizes the vessel’s efficiency for long-distance cruising.

Above the vessel, the sail plan is over 37,600 square feet. That outsized volume of sail across three masts is controlled by 34 winches using a remote sail-management system developed by Dykstra Naval Architects, Rondal, Carbo-Link and Doyle Sails.

Royal Huisman's 266-foot "Sea Eagle II" sailing superyacht has made a successful return to Europe from a four-year trip around the world.

“Despite her size, Sea Eagle II gets moving quickly,” said the captain in the notes. “From a skipper’s perspective, especially when racing, this means you can always be confident of performance.”

The hull, painted in flag blue, is built from aluminum, chosen for its lightness and strength. It served the owner’s preference for simplicity and reliability, but also proved challenging when joining the long, low superstructure, much of which is made from laminated glass.

“Despite her size, Sea Eagle II gets moving quickly,” said the captain in the notes. “From a skipper’s perspective, especially when racing, this means you can always be confident of performance.”

The shipyard glued the two materials together using a technique developed in the aerospace industry. It allows for up to 8 inches of flex between the deck and structure, yet provides a secure, weathertight bond. And the curved, forward windshield provides a stunning panoramic view for everyone on board.

The exterior design was by two renowned design firms, Netherlands-based Dykstra and UK-based Mark Whiteley Design, which also did the interior. One of the advantages of a joint design approach is the extra set of eyes on both internal and external areas. For example, the hull chine sweeping beneath the crew portholes to meet the waterline gives the superstructure “a curved tension,” according to Whiteley, yet also maximizes interior space.

For Dykstra, the focus was on speed and handling. “The modern styling allows a beamy transom and almost full-length waterline, providing better sail-keeping capabilities and promising faster crossings in greater comfort,” said Dykstra’s Erik Wassen. “The yacht can sail with less heel, greatly improving the comfort on board.”

Both the owner’s suite and five other staterooms for 10 guests are located on the lower deck. One guest cabin can be converted into a gym. True to form, the owner’s desire for transatlantic sailing drove many of the layout decisions, including a large hatch on the aft deck where a stern platform with concealed steps, a 26-foot tender, a crane, water-scooter and dive gear are stored.

Sea Eagle II may have returned from its globetrotting adventure, but judging by the owner’s lust for travel, it won’t be in the nest for long.

The massive 81m Sea Eagle II // Royal Huisman

Royal huisman built the 81-meter three-masted sailing yacht sea eagle ii for a repeat client that is also known as project 400..

SEA EAGLE II is the successor of the 43m SEA EAGLE (I) , delivered in 2015. Dykstra Naval Architects is responsible for the naval architecture and the exterior design. Interior designer Mark Whitely is also involved in the exterior design. The 81m aluminum yacht has space for 11 guests, including the owner and a crew of 14 people.

Furthermore, the yacht is the largest to date by Royal Huisman by volume (Athena is the longest with 90m, including bowsprit – the hull has a length of “just” 79.25 m). This new one is also the largest full-aluminum sailing yacht in the world to date.

Thys Nikkels of Dykstra Naval Architects:

“At Dykstra Naval Architects we are extremely excited and proud to be part of the creative team for the new 81m, three-masted performance schooner. Using our experience and inventive minds to create an innovative contemporary schooner yacht for fast passage making is one to tick off our Bucket List.”

Mark Whiteley of Mark Whiteley Design:

“Building a project with Royal Huisman is a very special experience for a designer, jointly designing an 81m new build is an opportunity of a career lifetime so I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Dykstra Naval Architects and the shipyard on this fast contemporary schooner”

The interior design of SEA EAGLE II

The modern interior is based on Alpi Walnut and is for comfortable family cruising but also for business meetings. The superstructure has a private part for owner and guests.

Project 400 Sea Eagle II Royal Huisman Sailing Yacht Interior

Thys Nikkels of Dykstra Naval Architects explains:

“The plumb bow, very long waterline, sleek hull, and large sail area will give the yacht the required high speed and good performance.”

To be entertained in anchor bays, SEA EAGLE II will provide a lot of space for guest tender with dive equipment, kayaks, SUP boards at the aft area.

3,500 sqm sail area and speeds over 21 knots!

Although it is a massive vessel, the yacht will have a Panamax height. The carbon-fiber rig with furling booms by Rondal – Royal Huisman’s subsidiary for masts, booms, and other yacht components next to the shipyard. In my opinion, the two companies forming a superyacht mall where owners can inspect the yacht and the parts with one visit. Moreover, Rondal delivered 34 winches to control the sail area of 3,500 square meters . The most massive winches have a pull load of 18.000 kg.

“An impressive feature is that each Rondal mast is built as one piece. This means that for 80% of the masts’ thickness, full length, uninterrupted carbon fiber laminates were applied, giving the mast unique properties with a perfectly even-strength distribution – resulting in a beautiful even bend, so no ‘hard spots’.”

Visit during the construction process

During the annual Dutch  Superyacht Press Tour in 2018, organized by the Holland Yachting Group/HISWA, I had the chance to visit Royal Huisman, Rondal, and Project 400 / SEA EAGLE II. All the pictures and the videos where the yard shows the turning of the hull are awe-inspiring, but in real life, it is much more impressive. To stand on the hull felt like an oversized sailing dinghy; the second picture below is not another superyacht project – it is the flybridge, but with 38m, it has the measurement of a superyacht.

In 2019 – just one year later, I had the pleasure again to join the Superyacht Press Tour. I saw an almost-finished yacht, including the installed interior. Amazing to see how fast this complete custom project has been realized. The tenders are stored under big hatches and will be moved by hidden cranes.

The second visit showed the quickness of the shipyard with the Dutch quality of craftsmanship.

Samara Description

A rare find of luxury yacht combined with sporty/ adventurous qualities which stands out head and shoulders above other monohull and catamaran hull yachts of this size. From bow to stern, guests cannot truly imagine the comfort, quality and spaciousness of SAMARA until stepping aboard. Named after the ´winged seed of the Sycamore tree´, this yacht was built to glide effortlessly, efficiently and steadily over long distances, in shallow waters thanks to a minimum draft. Packed with innovative features such as solar power technology and cork decks while also catering to the most adventurous or laid back cruisers, every type of guest will appreciate what this yacht has to offer. The volume is remarkable with 4000 square feet aboard - beyond that of larger monohulls and attributed to her 31’ beam versus the typical 20’. Stepping aboard the AFT DECK, there is an extra large al fresco dining area, well sheltered (plus eisinglass enclosure optional) alongside a full barbeque grill to starboard. Enjoy a cocktail or coffee at the full bar to starboard side or just appreciate the view. Entering the MAIN SALON brings everything to life with open plan galley and bar stools to starboard and the welcoming lounge area to port. Concealed overhead is the 55´ TV transforming this area for movie night or morning news while at the galley bar. There is easy access to a bayhead on this level just forward of the lounge as well. Make your way amidship forward into a cozy sunken, second lounge situated a few steps down from the main salon. A romantic fire place feature here on a blustery evening makes this lounge very inviting. A true sanctuary on the main deck is the forward facing MASTER suite with open plan from port to starboard bringing in the gorgeous views and natural light of outdoors, inside as well. To port is the ensuite Master bathroom with double sinks featuring designer waterfall taps, private toilet and stall shower. To starboard is a walk-in wardrobe with drawers and hanging closet. Storage is ample throughout. A private glass door leads forward onto the Jacuzzi deck serving as a full Owner´s deck and offers privacy with the subtle wrap around of superstructure design on both sides. Large petal-shaped loungers invited guests to relax in the sun or curl up and read a book in privacy. Forward below deck in the port and starboard hulls guests will find the comfort of two Queen staterooms, each en suite with spacious showers, toilet and ample storage in two closets and cabinetry. Aft in the starboard hull 2-3 more guests can find accommodation in a double bed with pullman bunk, also with en suite facilities. Moving up to the SUN DECK during the day is akin to stepping into a private garden in an exclusive villa. Two custom cabanas easily offer comfort to 3 adults each with shade as desired overhead and around. If more sun is preferred, two chaise and two comfortable bean bags can be positioned where guests wish. A ‘jump seat’ sunpad situated in front of the helm on this level also provides the best view from above. The grassy texture covering this deck is soothing and non-slip underfoot while also giving an ‘island’ feel. As the moon rises, this deck transforms to a whole new experience of its own. Whether experiencing movie night with the oversized cinema in position or an elegant dinner under the stars, this is the most favored space aboard by most. Not to forget the area where the most action occurs, the SWIM PLATFORM. A hydraulic center stage secures the wave runners when under way and once lowered, this level is the easy access deck for choice of SCUBA DIVING, water toys, boarding the tender and swim entry. Transform this area with chairs and inflatable cushions for the perfect BEACH CLUB. Each hull also offers a set of steps and a swim ladder for water access.
