A Step-By-Step Guide to Yacht Paint Touch Ups

Currently, he’s a second officer on a 60-meter expedition/science research yacht, operating out of Australia.

With the hustle of a busy charter season, scrapes and nicks are inevitable. This step-by-step guide will help you touch up your yacht’s paint, keeping it sharp until the next yard period.

While it’s often best to leave painting to the pros for the best finish, there will be times when you need to handle touch-ups yourself. Modern yacht paint jobs are becoming increasingly complex and harder to replicate, making the ability to perform minor repairs a valuable skill set on board. Ideally, touch-ups should focus on minor scrapes and chips, helping you maintain your yacht’s appearance until the next full paint job. Generally, these repairs should be no larger than a credit card; anything bigger will require more effort to achieve proper blending and color matching.

As with many jobs on board, 90 percent is preparation. So first, consult a product data or technical data sheet specific to the paint manufacturer. If you don’t have one handy, you should be able to find a PDF online — just ensure you have the correct color code or name associated with the yacht to reference. This document will explain how to prepare the paint, in what ratios, and how best to apply it. There will be a different process for the fairing compound, the base coat, and the topcoat. Hopefully, you can get away with just applying a fresh topcoat layer to touch-ups; however, for the purpose of instruction, we’ll assume it’s a deeper repair and build from the fairing layer up.

Additionally, seasoned varnishers will recognize much of the same practices that apply to painting. Painting or varnishing in windy conditions will almost always lead to bubbling and dust specks ruining the finish. Likewise, painting in a dusty shipyard or close to highways will lead to bubbling from air particles landing on paint. When possible, it’s best practice to tent off or enclose areas you’d like to paint. It also pays to check the weather, as high heat, direct sunlight, and precipitation will all lead to an unhappy final product.

1. Clean the area to remove grit, grease, or dirt, and remove any loose or flaking paint with a scraper. 

2. Tape off the area you want to work in and begin sanding with medium/fine grit to ensure good adhesion and shape for the new fairing compound. Consult your data sheet for preparing the fairing compound, as most will require some kind of curing time after mixing the resin with a hardener. 

3. Clean the area with alcohol or a similar solvent to remove residual sanding dust, and apply the fairing with a putty knife or scraper to match the adjacent contouring. This is usually the hardest part, and for first-timers, don’t worry, it’ll take a few goes to get the shape right. Once fully cured, sand back and repeat these steps as necessary.

4. Now, we move on to the base and topcoat. The paint layering for most yachts is fairing, primer, base coat, and topcoat. Each layer will have specific mixing arrangements and drying times, found in the data sheet of your particular paint color code and brand. It can be time-consuming, yet flexible to do in between other jobs, so plan accordingly. Remember, windy, dusty conditions will almost certainly ruin a paint job, with dust and particles settling in the fresh paint. Tent and prepare if the touch-up calls for it.

5. Before you begin sanding to match the fairing with the surrounding shape, first tape the perimeter of the repair area to limit the surface that you’re sanding. Blue masking tape is fine, although less adhesive painter-friendly tape is often better on the paint. As always, avoid leaving tape on paint in direct sunlight, or any adhesive for that matter. You’ll be repeating the taping process for each coat applied, with a light sand between each coat with a fine grit (220 to 320). Shaping the fairing may take a few tries to get right, especially if working in tricky contouring. If necessary, reapply fairing as needed until adequate shaping is achieved.

6. Next up is the primer to apply onto the fairing. Primer is needed for additional paint layers to adhere to, as they won’t adhere well by themselves, and will also “seal” the fairing compound. Primer is okay for a single coat, sometimes two.

7. The base coats provide correct coloring and blending, applied in one to three coats. For application, using a brush or roller is fine for smaller areas; however, you’ll get a better finish with a spray application. If spraying, avoid overspray at all costs and tent or cover as necessary. As with all painting, it’s best practice to apply many thin layers rather than one or two thick layers. The base coat is the first layer of the visible finish and is needed to provide a smooth surface to which the topcoats will be applied.

8. Our topcoat is the final aesthetic look that provides UV protection, durability, and the glossy finish, with two to three topcoats being ideal. A uniform topcoat will depend on all layers underneath it, and when applying topcoat, move the taped area fractionally further out to blend it with the surrounding area, as you sand between coats.

It’s easy to get caught up in the complexity of painting, which is why I’d much rather leave it to the experts. Touch-ups are only meant to get you through until the next full-vessel paint job. It’s extremely difficult to get them flawless. But at the end of the day, it’ll likely be better than the damage in the first place, and a bigger skill set means better salary. Happy painting!

How to Touch Up Painted Aluminum

Painted Aluminum

When it comes to aluminum and paint, the best coating is—nothing. As a result of a process known as passivation, aluminum, when exposed to air, develops an extremely hard and resilient oxide coating. The reason aluminum spars, ports, and pedestals are painted or coated is simply to enhance their appearance. Anodizing is a popular alternative, but many feel it’s not as attractive as the high-gloss finish of polyurethane.

The weak link in painted aluminum hardware is its propensity to corrode when the coating is breached. A nick or scratch allows water to migrate under the coating, where air is in short supply. The aluminum remains active rather than passive, and the result is poultice corrosion, of which there are two types: dry, identifiable by a white powder, and wet, which produces a white goo.

Therefore, if you have painted aluminum hardware on board—and nearly every boat does—the best approach is to prevent damage to the paint; if damage does occur, make your repairs quickly. In terms of prevention, bed each and every piece of hardware, from individual fasteners to mast steps, tracks, and compass bases, where they interface with painted surfaces. Bedding reduces paint damage and seals that which occurs, preventing water from entering the breach.

For small nicks and scratches, first remove any loose paint or chips. Next, use a clean rag that’s been rinsed in fresh water and allowed to dry to dewax the surface by wiping it down with a solvent such as 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover. Then, with an artist’s brush and a high-quality enamel or single-part epoxy paint that closely matches the existing pigment, simply fill the nick or scratch. A couple of coats will build up thickness. Priming is impractical for small areas, so don’t sweat it. If it’s a high-visibility area, let the repair fully cure, then lightly sand it using 600-grit sandpaper followed by paste polishing compound and wax.

If you’re handy, repair larger areas, such as peeling ports or pedestals, using sandpaper, masking tape, and a brush. Remove all loose paint, then sand the hard edges where the sound paint remains using 220-grit sandpaper; sand so there’s a gradual transition between paint and bare metal.

Next, clean the surface with solvent (avoid touching it after) and mask the area (the tape should bisect the area on the existing, sanded paint). Then, using a good brush that won’t shed, apply an aluminum-compatible primer, preferably from the same manufacturer as the paint you intend to use. Follow the directions, which may call for sanding between primer and topcoat. Then apply the topcoat; use either a high-quality brush that’s designed for the type of paint you’re using or a one-time spray bottle, such as those from Preval . If you use the latter, masking will be much more important and will need to cover a larger area; never attempt this job on a breezy day. Depending on coverage, several coats may be required.

Once the paint is cured, carefully remove the masking tape by pulling it parallel with the surface, not perpendicular. Use the same sanding and polishing techniques described above. Some might ponder the use of a two-part paint for such repairs. While more durable, it’s not for the inexperienced; be prepared to use a respirator and other protective gear. If you’re experienced with such paints and use the necessary gear, the finish is more durable.

If you’re not spending the winter months in the Caribbean or the Pacific, this quiet and cold time is perfect for renovation and repair work on the yacht, especially on the interior. It is a well-known fact that normal use over a long period of time will show signs of wear and tear. For this very reason, a touch-up check between seasons is a standard appointment in the calendar of every yacht. Regardless of whether it is a charter or private yacht, if you start the new season with a spotless interior, the like-new feeling is quickly transmitted to the guests and crew on board and gives everyone’s time on the water a special boost.

If you are not in a shipyard over the winter for an extensive refit or major repair work, but spend the winter in one of the many marinas around the Mediterranean, then you are dependent on the touch-up work being carried out on site. If work cannot be carried out on board or would be too extensive, selected components can be removed, such as re-upholstering or stretching a leather cover, transported to the workshop in Germany for processing and sent back on board for re-installation.

Kia does not have yacht blue touch up paint any suggestions?  

Do they not? From my understanding they do, although I don't have my car yet!

that might work for mustang blue.  

Don't see why not. yacht blue has been on other Kia cars before the EV6.  

They do, it's code DU3  

Call your dealer. They got my Steel gray non matte in a couple of days. One side of the pen is paint and the other side contains clear coat. Works very well.  

The dealer said they don't have it keep calling back.  

Start calling other dealers, yours obviously doesn't want the business!  

Jim, I’m having the same issue. I already called two dealers and am waiting to hear back. There are some aftermarket paints on Amazon but I’m not sure I want to waste shipping and handling charges if they don’t match. Who knew yacht blue would be so hard to get since as one of the other guys mentioned it’s a color they seem to use on other vehicles.  

google "Paint Scratch" touch up paint.....they do their very best to provide the perfect match!

I see several listings on Ebay for Yacht Blue DU3 paint.  

I know dealerships in the UK have them available, I'm pretty sure they must be available in the US, remember to never believe everything a dealer tells you. Hope you get it sorted okay 👍
