There's all that and more in the beautiful Bahamas, just a one-hour flight from Miami. 

When Hurricane Dorian hit the northern part of the Bahamas in 2019, your Bahamas sailing options were reduced. On September 1 that year, the eye of the hurricane made landfall on Great Abaco island, once a favored tropical island getaway among sailboat vacationers. To the west Grand Bahama was also badly affected. The tourism infrastructure on these once busy travel destinations is still under reconstruction. 

The Bahamas comprise over 700 islands and 2,400 cays. So while the Abacos could no longer be serviced there was capacity for a quick recovery elsewhere. The main entry point of Nassau escaped significant damage, as did the region's other sailing holiday paradise, the Exumas. Extending towards the Caribbean from just 30 nautical miles south of the Bahama's main boat charter base, the Exumas form a string of cays that will keep you and your crew entranced during your charter sailing vacation. 

A Tropical Island Sailing Destination that Stands Apart

Unlike the chain of Caribbean islands to the south that were formed by volcanic activity, the Bahamas are the above-water parts of two extensive banks that rise from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. The shallow waters here are dotted with numerous islands and cays sheltered behind miles of coral reef that teem with sea life.

The delights of a sailing vacation in the Bahamas unfold around The Exumas, a string of cays much of which is enclosed in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea National Park. In the winterless climate of this special place, the trade winds blow gently across calm turquoise waters sheltered from the ocean beyond. The emphasis is on nature, solitude and tranquility, with small beach settlements, some including resorts, to be found on the cays you will visit.  

On a charter covering the traditional seven days, set out from Nassau's Palm Cay Marina Base and  sail some 35 nautical miles (65km) to the Exumas. One of the first cays you'll reach is Highbourne Cay, a great place to start, as you sample the warm tropical waters and snorkel some of the surrounding reefs. From there you can 'island hop' all the way to Allen Cay and examine its unique iguana sub-species. You'll have ample time to explore what you missed on the way out. 

The Bahamas cruising ground is expansive, and the Exumas offer just about all that charter sailors are looking for in a holiday with family and friends. But if sailing and discovery are the main objectives, there's much more to explore on an extended voyage through this widespread archipelago.

January is the coolest month (77°F/25°C) and August the warmest (90°/32°). The Bahamas average an impressive 3,000 sunshine hours per year, with summer being the wettest season.

The Bahamas are an enormous series of island chains lying to the east and south of the Florida peninsula. The closest Bahama island chain are the Bimini Islands, only 45 nautical miles east of Miami. However it can take up to 10 hrs to get there due to weather conditions and wind direction. For those more experienced sailors who want an offshore sailing adventure, as well as an opportunity to cruise to another country, this itinerary is for you.  Otherwise we suggest flying to Bimini or any other port in the Bahamas to start the charter there.

We leave the Miami depending on weather conditions in the morning or evening crossing the infamous waters of the Gulf Stream.  The Bahamas are known for their perfect white sand beaches, crystal clear blue waters, and colorful coral reefs.  Since the waters are very shallow, snorkeling is a must activity in the Bimini islands, where you can see shipwrecks and coral reefs up close and personal.  We spend the nights  anchoring near beaches, or stay in the marinas. We recommend at least a five day itinerary to Bimini or weekly charter to visit nearby islands.

Bimini consists of Two Main Islands — North Bimini Island and South Bimini Island — and numerous Cays .

The history of Bimini is as fascinating as the Islands themselves. Famed Explorer, Ponce de León, was allegedly lured to Bimini in the Early 1500s in search of the ‘Fountain of Youth’ , and a site still bears that name today.

Due to Bimini’s  close proximity to the United States , the Island served as a convenient Offshore speakeasy and Liquor Store during the Prohibition Era . If you’re chartering a motor yacht, it is possible to go from Miami to Bimini in under 3 hours, making a day trip a possibility. However, a day trip can be very cost inefficient, especially considering most of your day will be cruising across the gulf stream and not enjoying the beautiful Bahamian waters.

The answer is no, you shouldn’t charter a yacht from South Florida to the Bahamas (except Bimini), but the answer isn’t short.

If you’re looking to charter a yacht in the Bahamas for 7-10 days you most likely would be visiting the islands of the Abacos and Exumas. Most charter yachts depart from the capital of the Bahamas (Nassau) mainly for the reasons below.

Things to Consider When Chartering a Yacht From Florida to Bahamas:

Financial considerations.

Sales Tax – Sales tax in the Bahamas is 4% versus 7% in South Florida [Palm Beach County (West Palm Beach), Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) and Dade County (Miami)].

Price of Fuel – Fuel prices are around half the price in Florida than in the Bahamas.

Amount of Fuel – The amount of fuel the yacht will consume to get to the Bahamas & back to Florida could supersede the repositioning fee it will cost you to relocate the yacht.

Time – Miami to Nassau is 160nm, which means it would take one full day to arrive in Nassau, costing you a significant amount of money in fuel and wasted time cruising to your destination. The amount of time (money) it will take cruising to the Bahamas and back to Florida will most likely supersede the repositioning fee charged by the yacht owner and can take two days out of your Bahamas yacht charter.

Cost Savings Example:

• 100ft+ yacht that charters for $50,000 a week ($7,142 a day)
• Cruises 16knts @ 120gph fuel burn
• 10hrs (each way) x 2 = 20hrs
• 20hrs x120gph = 2,400gal
• 2,400gal x $3.50gal (est.) = $8,400
• Lose two days of time traveling open ocean that could be spent in the Abacos or Exumas – $7,142 a day x 2 =$14,284
• $5,000 Repo fee (est.)
• $8,400 fuel + $14,284 in charter time – $5,000 repo fee = $17,684 in savings!

Legal Considerations

Liability – Most yachts will have to charter off of a Demise/Bareboat charter agreement if departing from U.S. waters. Departing from Bahamian waters you can charter off of a Time Charter Agreement, limiting your liability as a charterer.

Vessel Status – Foreign flagged vessels that have not paid their U.S. duties by law cannot charter from U.S. waters.

Accessibility

Mother Nature– Weather can affect the amount of time it takes cruising to your destination. It’s never fun to sail through rough weather. Once you are in the Bahamas your captain should be able to alter your itinerary to best avoid rough seas.

International Airport– Nassau has an international airport which has direct flights from Fort Lauderdale and many more cites.

Here at Yacht.Vacations we’re often asked about how to charter from Miami to Bahamas. Is it possible? Is it easy? Is it expensive? Is it worth it?

We’re here to answer all of your questions – and those you never thought to ask! 

Here’s our guide to chartering from Miami to the Bahamas.

In case you weren’t aware, Miami is a prime spot for boat rentals. There are several busy marinas with a wide variety of boats to choose from. It’s also home to the Miami International Boat Show, drawing 100,000 visitors each year. 

With so much choice, it may seem a bit of a minefield when it comes to finding and booking the perfect boat. That’s where we come in – we’re able to search and compare different providers and fleets to ensure you snag the best option for your trip. 

Miami airport to the marinas is also a breeze, with several transport options. And of course we’re on hand to advise. 

All aboard!

Once you’ve boarded your new home from home, it’s time to set sail. 

The Bahamas lie east of Florida, with the nearest point, Bimini, being only 50 nautical miles away. Bimini is comprised of three islands: North, South and East Bimini. Even if it’s not your ultimate destination, it’s well worth stopping by en route. 

Crossing the Gulf Stream out of season isn’t always an easy passage. In summer, the waters are calm and beautiful, with rarely more than 1-2 feet of swell. Out of season, you could experience swells of up to 10 feet. If you’re an experienced and adventurous sailor, you may relish the challenge! Otherwise, allow your captain to expertly guide you across the passage. Approximately 50 recreational vessels make this journey each day, so it’s perfectly safe and possible.

How long will it take?

Of course, this depends on your boat! With a motor yacht, you can reach Bimini in under three hours, and Marsh Harbor or Nassau in a day. 

A vessel averaging six knots will take most of the day to get to a decent harbor in the western Bahamas. You may need to allow a couple of days to reach The Abacos or northern Exumas. Again, the powerful Gulf Stream is your main contender here. We recommend erring on the side of caution when it comes to factoring in your timings.

What awaits me in the Bahamas?

Well… a paradise of relaxation, adventure and exploration to start with! The Bahamas are a 5,358 square mile archipelago. Approximately 700 islands and cays, and 180,000 square miles of ocean. 

These islands are known for the stunning, clear waters that surround them. They’re a haven for swimming, surfing, fishing or simply lying on the beautiful beaches. 

Those who make the crossing are greeted by hot, dry weather, with year-round averages above 80°F. Sea temperatures are around 70°F in winter, and reach over 80°F in summer. Summer can bring some wet weather, so that’s worth factoring in when you plan your trip. 

The Sea of Abaco is definitely not to be missed. This area is loved by sailors from across the world for its clear warm waters. It’s also home to the world’s fourth-largest barrier reef – a vibrant paradise of marine life. Definitely a bucket-list experience for divers. 

On Exumas , you may be greeted ashore by the famous swimming pigs, as well as friendly iguanas and sharks!

Nassau, the capital, offers endless incredible attractions. Rum distilleries, museums, water parks, beaches can all be found here, with something guaranteed to keep each member of your group enthralled. 

What should I pack?

Well, this does depend a little on your personal preferences when it comes to charter vacations, but as a guide, we’d suggest the following:

• Your passport, with current Bahamian stamps and travel dates
• A fishing permit for Bahamas waters, if you’re a keen angler
• Sun protection, in the form of sunscreen, long-sleeved shirts and pants, and polarized sunglasses
• Provisions, if you’re bareboating. Make sure you’ve got enough food and water to see you across the Gulf. Of course, if you’re going all-inclusive, your crew will have this all taken care of
• Snorkel, diving and fishing equipment, if not already aboard your boat.

We do not encourage our clients to use vacation yachts as alternative transportation to Nassau or Freeport. It’s always better to fly. As an example, it takes two whole days on a motor yacht from Miami to Nassau. Three days on a sailing boat or catamaran.

The best time of year to cruise the Bahamas is definitely during the summer months – May – June – July, August – September, even October. Yes, of course we’ll try and steer you clear of any tropical weather, but it is the season.

We always recommend that our clients pick up their Bahamas charter vessel IN THE BAHAMAS. We don’t necessarily suggest that you cross the Gulf Stream in your charter yacht.

You can, of course, travel down to the Florida Keys almost in any weather as there are several options depending on the weather and including the smooth waters of Hawk Channel inside the barrier reef.

Winter, of course, is also quite warm but the weather can be affected by the continental cold fronts that sweep across the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas every couple of weeks or so. So, in winter, if you want to organize a get-away in the Bahamas, try to get as far South as possible where you will be minimally affected by the frontal weather.
