Sailboat with Seasonal Lights

Date/Time Friday, December 3, 2021 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Boats decorated with Christmas lights, often numbering in the thousands of lights, parade by Willows Beach, Cattle Point and Gyro Park where regularly hundreds of individuals view the parade, participate in on-shore activities and are given the opportunity to make donations in cash, food or toys to Oak Bay Kiwanis at Willows Beach and the Salvation Army at Gyro Park. Hot chocolate is handed out to donors and there is a bonfire at Willows Beach.

The parade is usually led by a Navy training vessel. The number of boats that participate ranges from 12 to 20, weather permitting. In view of this continued success and encouragement, the Royal Victoria Yacht Club (RVYC) will again host the event on Friday December 3, 2021.

The parade starts at RVYC at 6:45 and follows the shore to Cattle Point for 7:00 pm, Willows Beach for 7:15 pm then passes close to Gyro Park in Cadboro Bay at approximately 7:45 pm.

Swiftsure sails into its 78th year this weekend

Start of the Swiftsure International Yacht Race at Clover Point on May 28, 2022. DARREN STONE, TIMES COLONIST

Spectators will be lining Dallas Road Saturday morning for the 78th Swiftsure Lightship Classic race, hoping to see brightly coloured spinnakers filled out by a brisk westerly wind sending boats on their way.

Every year — except 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic — locals and visitors flock to Clover Point, the official starting location, and line up along Dallas Road for five races, beginning with the Lightship Classic at 9 a.m. Saturday. Other races follow in 10-minute increments.

Race chair Randy Diamond said organizers are hoping for clear weather with a 15 to 20 knot wind coming from the west.

Last year, spectators huddled along the waterfront under cloudy skies and a light drizzle.

Officials will do a live broadcast from a tent set up at Clover Point.

Out-of-town boats are expected to begin arriving at the Inner Harbour Causeway docks early this afternoon and through Friday.

So far close to 115 boats have registered for the five races, of which about 70 per cent are from the U.S. More are expected to enter the race. “People love coming to Victoria’s Inner Harbour,” Diamond said, adding Swiftsure boats setting off create a “very pretty race at the start.”

While the Swiftsure remains popular with boaters, entry numbers have not yet regained pre-pandemic levels.

Last year’s races attracted 120 boats, below the 2019 figure of 140, Diamond said.

The Swiftsure Lightship Classic, named for a lightship — an aid to navigation serving as a kind of lighthouse — is the longest race. Boats in the race sail around the “lightship” before returning to Victoria.

These days, racing yachts go around a virtual mark, but the real Swiftsure lightship was stationed at Swiftsure Bank, near the entrance of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, west of Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park off the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Today, it’s being restored at the Northwest Seaport Maritime Heritage Centre in Seattle.

Tents will be set up on the lower causeway for the Swiftsure Centre, where the public can ask questions of event ambassadors. Close to 200 volunteers pitch in to make the event happen.

Volunteers are buffing up trophies to prepare for the award ceremony, held the night prior to the race — awards are handed out one year after the event — at the Strathcona Hotel, Diamond said.

While the Lightship Classic is the longest race, the Cape Flattery race is the most popular. That’s because waters are calmer in the Cape Flattery race than in the Lightship race, where boats can face open ocean swells.

Boats from the Juan de Fuca race start returning about 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Sunday morning. That day will be filled with boats returning from their various races, Diamond said.

The finish point is Ogden Point breakwater. Boats then go into the harbour for a check by safety inspectors.

Jeff Bray, chief executive of the Downtown Victoria Business Association, said visitors stay in hotels downtown and go to restaurants and shop, while locals are also attracted to the city centre. “It has a great impact.”

Keith Wells, executive director of the Greater Victoria Sport Tourism Commission, called Swiftsure a premiere yachting event on North America’s west coast. “It has the attention of yachtsmen up and down the coast.”

Even so, the tourism commission, a sponsor, is trying to attract more international sailors and raise more awareness, he said. This is a marquee event for the city and it makes sense to build it back up, he said.

Swiftsure basics

• Race boats will arrive at the Inner Harbour Causeway docks on Thursday and Friday.

• Central Saanich Lions Club serves breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday at Clover Point.

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

royal victoria yacht club sea of lights 2023

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

royal victoria yacht club sea of lights 2023

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems.
