Jeff Bezos’ Magnificent KORU Yacht and ABEONA Support Vessel

The KORU yacht is a 127 meter sailing yacht built in the Netherlands by Oceanco and delivered in 2023. She was designed by Dykstra Naval Architects with the the interior of the yacht designed by Mlinaric, Henry & Zervudachi.

In the world of luxury yachting, few names command as much attention as Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and one of the richest individuals on the planet.

Bezos’ affinity for the sea and his penchant for exploration have materialized in the form of the breathtaking sailing yacht KORU and its companion, the support vessel ABEONA.

Commissioned from renowned shipbuilders Oceanco and Damen Yachting, respectively, these vessels are not only a testament to Bezos’ wealth but also a celebration of Māori culture and innovation in yacht design.

The Marvel of Modern Yacht Design: KORU Yacht

The KORU yacht, also known as Y721, is a masterpiece crafted by the acclaimed Oceanco shipyard. With a remarkable length of 127 meters (417 feet), the yacht exudes luxury and grandeur in every aspect. Launched in April 2023, KORU stands as a tribute to Māori art and culture, as evident from its name and styling.

koru yacht side

The Māori word “koru” signifies a loop or coil, symbolizing new life, growth, strength, and peace. This symbolism resonates throughout the vessel, creating an immersive experience that pays homage to the essence of Māori art.

Inside the KORU yacht, guests are treated to a world of unparalleled luxury. The yacht boasts a large swimming pool on the aft deck, inviting guests to bask in the sun while surrounded by the beauty of the open sea.

Accommodating up to 18 guests and serviced by a crew of approximately 40, KORU offers a perfect balance between privacy and service.

The yacht’s interiors are a testament to meticulous design and craftsmanship, with each detail meticulously chosen to provide the highest level of comfort.

The Symbolism of KORU’s Name

The choice of the name “KORU” for the yacht holds deep significance. In Māori culture, the koru symbolizes new beginnings, growth, and the cycle of life.

It is often represented as an unfolding fern frond, embodying the concepts of renewal and continuous movement. Jeff Bezos, in an Instagram post , highlighted the symbolism behind the name, showcasing his embrace of growth, rebirth, and mindfulness.

Built by Damen Yachting, ABEONA serves as the perfect adjunct to the KORU yacht. This custom-built vessel carries all the toys, tenders, and equipment needed to enhance the yachting experience.

With a large helicopter hangar and the capacity to accommodate 45 staff, crew, and guests, ABEONA stands as an indispensable asset to the main yacht.

The Visionary Behind the Vessels: Jeff Bezos

With a staggering net worth of $160 billion, Jeff Bezos is not only a pioneer in the world of e-commerce but also a visionary with a passion for the sea.

The commissioning of the KORU yacht and the ABEONA support vessel reflects Bezos’ love for exploration and his desire to embrace the vastness of the ocean.

Bezos’ affinity for the sea is also reflected in his ownership of a Gulfstream G650ER private jet, showcasing his penchant for luxury both in the air and on the water.

Sailing yacht KORU: What we know so far about Jeff Bezos’ 127 meter yacht

By Nina Done   15 December 2022

Recent footage showcasing the vast proportions of the Amazon founder’s new 127m (417ft) Oceanco sailing yacht KORU , known throughout her build as Project Y721, has provided some valuable insight into one of the yachting industry’s best-kept secrets.

The megayacht’s specifications and amenities had been kept completely under wraps until she was forced to move from the Dutch yard’s primary facilities in Alblasserdam to get her masts fitted elsewhere in order to avoid dismantling the Koningshaven Bridge after huge public backlash.

In August, the yacht was spotted in the Port of Rotterdam after her trio of masts had been successfully stepped, with pictures barely doing justice to the monolithic proportions of the sailing spars, reportedly up to 70-80 meters tall.

World yacht rankings

KORU will replace Oceanco’s BLACK PEARL for second place in the world's largest sailing yacht rankings behind Nobiskrug's 143m (469ft) sailing yacht A .

Oceanco's newest yacht is understood to have an internal volume of 3,300 GT and will undoubtedly offer a wealth of luxurious accommodation and amenities. Although we have scant information about the yacht's features, we do know that she will have an aft dip pool along with a further Jacuzzi on her sundeck and variety of alfresco social spaces. She also has a crow's nest attached to her central mast, offering lofty panoramic views for her more adventurous guests.

From the pictures we can see KORU also benefits from full-length windows across her superstructure allowing plenty of light to infuse her interiors.

Design inspiration

Sailing yacht Koru docked in Netherlands

Built with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure with teak decking, she reportedly takes her design cues from the 93-meter Lürssen sailing yacht EOS , perhaps inspired by the entrepreneur’s visits to this yacht in previous years.

Lurssen sailing yacht EOS

Showcasing a midnight-blue hull with a distinctive red stripe running along her waterline, KORU’s exterior styling mirrors this traditional schooner style, with an elongated bowsprite and canoe stern. Another similar style yacht is the 90m (295ft) Royal Huisman sailing yacht ATHENA .

Kinetic energy technology

As expected from a tech entrepreneur, known for pushing boundaries and driving innovation, sailing yacht KORU will be trialing a prototype for a new kinetic energy recovery system. This is based on a conversion of wave induced motion, heave, pitch and roll into electric energy, with initial tests showing early promise.

With a nod to her green credentials, this will provide an additional power source for the yacht allowing for more sustainable cruising.

Tenders and toys

Access to sailing yacht KORU will be via folding passerelles, discreetly hidden in the yacht's hull on either side. Rescue and work tender launches will likely take place further forward, as per regulations. Recent pictures show a large hatch opening in her lower deck aft, which may contain further tenders and toys, but may also double as a beach club.

Jeff Bezos support yacht Wingman

Sailing yacht KORU comes complete with a support vessel built by Damen Yachts, reportedly known as 75 meter (247ft) yacht WINGMAN .

Portrait of Jeff Bezos the owner of sailing yacht Koru

Once delivered, it is understood that she will act as an official support boat for the sailing yacht , carrying the larger toys, including a submarine for thrilling excursions beneath the waves, plus a helicopter and landing pad. She is also believed to play host to an array of PWCs, with rumors of a speed boat and luxury car adding to the fleet, as well as providing accommodation for additional crew and staff.

When is sailing yacht KORU expected to be delivered?

From here she will undertake the all-important rounds of sea trials before being delivered to her owner sometime in the new year. It is understood that the yacht will be officially christened KORU upon delivery, and will operate under the Cayman Islands' flag. It is not believed that superyacht KORU will be available to charter.

What yachting industry insiders have to say about Jeff Bezos' superyacht

  • Jeff Bezos' yacht , which reportedly cost $500 million to build, completed its first year at sea.
  • The superyacht, Koru, was a frequent topic of conversation at the Palm Beach boat show.
  • Here's what industry insiders think about the vessel.

Insider Today

It's been just about a year since Koru, Jeff Bezos ' $500 million megayacht, set sail from the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands, capturing the attention of yachting insiders and land dwellers alike.

Even after her first season at sea, the 127-meter ship is still one of the most talked about vessels among those in the know — and not just for the busty figurehead on its prow, which many have wrongly speculated is based on Bezos's fiancée . Koru was a hot topic at the annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, where the yachts of other billionaires were on display for sale or charter.

The overwhelming response from those Business Insider spoke to was awe, with many praising her unique design, commenting on her immense size, or remarking that they'd been lucky enough to see her up close.

"It's absolutely beautiful," said Federico Rossi, the COO of luxury yachtbuilder Rossinavi.

Still, due to the small size of the industry — and the fact that privacy is paramount in the yachting community — even those who complimented Koru mostly did not want to go on record in order to protect professional relationships.

"That thing's amazing," one such superyacht expert told BI. "It's very well done in terms of craftsmanship."

Unlike many other megayachts, Koru, which media billionaire Barry Diller's Eos inspired, is designed as a sailing yacht. That bucks the current trend of more severe-looking explorer boats — though Koru's 75-meter support vessel Abeona is of a more typical style,

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," the superyacht expert also told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Like most other megayachts, Koru is powered by her engines, which are reportedly innovative in their use of a kinetic energy recovery system. Industry experts, therefore, pointed out that her sails are more for looks than anything else — but that still works in her favor, with many praising her overall aesthetic appeal.

Related stories

"It's stunning," added a captain who has worked on several megayachts. He said he'd seen Koru in St. Barts, a favorite spot of Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez , over the holidays.

"There are definitely uglier boats out there," one yacht architect said. "It's not like it's shaped like his rocket," he jokily added, referring to the phallic design of Blue Origin's New Shephard .

Some, though, think the yacht is a bit excessive — which is saying something in a world where bigger is better and $250 million is a normal amount to spend.

"That's over the top. That's an insanely ridiculous boat," a longtime broker who favors discretion said. It's a "whole big show."

And the expert who praised the yacht's craftsmanship balanced his admiring comments by saying Koru's liberal use of teak — a wood traditionally used for yacht decks — was "bizarre."

The material has gained a bad reputation in the industry in recent years, as it typically comes from Myanmar, a country with a checkered human rights record. Plus, it takes a long time to grow, leading to deforestation.

Many shipyards have now turned to alternatives, like bamboo or plantation-grown teak, in their pushes toward sustainability. Bezos' team did not respond to BI's question about the origin of the deck's wood.

Teak or not, the yachting industry isn't generally known for being all that environmentally friendly — or indeed lowkey, so many who BI talked to didn't buy into the idea that Koru is "too much."

"If this is genuinely Jeff's dream come true, then great," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. "I'm genuinely happy for him, and I'm happy for the people who got the opportunity to have employment to work on that."

And Bezos, of course, isn't the only billionaire with a stunning yacht . Billionaires like Jerry Jones and Bernard Arnault have also, at times, turned heads with their boats.

Most recently, insiders have tied Mark Zuckerberg to a 118-meter ship named Launchpad . It's the latest superyacht to capture the yachting world's attention.

So, as she sets sail for her debut summer season, Launchpad may take Koru's place as the main yacht on everyone's radar this year.

koru yacht meaning

Koru is a 127-metre sailing yacht currently delivered from Oceanco in the Netherlands. Reportedly commissioned for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos , the superyacht is a three-masted schooner built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The yacht is the world’s largest sailing yacht and the longest yacht built in the Netherlands. The yacht was constructed at Oceanco’s Alblasserdam facilities and later moved to Rotterdam where she waited to complete sea trials at a dock in Eemhaven.

The yacht was delivered to Mallorca in April 2023. The price of Koru has never been disclosed. She is expected to have a gross tonnage of 3300 GT. The yacht is powered by kinetic energy generated by the sails, but like most sailing yachts, she will have engine power as well.

She will join five other Oceanco yachts measuring over 100 metres and ten other superyachts built in the Netherlands measuring over 100 metres.

Koru main features

Koru has a navy hull, red bootstripe, and double-deck wooden coach house. Her profile is characterised by a long bowsprit and a classic canoe stern which will provide enhanced privacy while the yacht is in port. There is also a sizeable dip pool visible on the aft, as well as a crow’s nest on the mizzenmast.

Koru and the De Hef bridge

In 2021, the yacht was the subject of considerable controversy when it emerged that the historic Koningshaven Bridge, also known by the name De Hef, would need to be dismantled to allow the masts to pass under. However, in August 2022, one of the yacht’s masts was seen being transported along the Nieuwe Maas to be stepped elsewhere and the bridge remained untouched. The height of the mainmast is thought to be between 65 and 85 metres.

Koru's secondary yacht

Koru will be accompanied by a support vessel which is thought to be built by Damen Yachting, another Dutch yachtbuilder, which specialises in ocean-going shadow vessels and explorer yachts This yacht will be used to carry toys, tenders and additional crew.

In 2019, there were a number of rumours speculating that Lürrsen’s 136 metre Flying Fox was built for Jeff Bezos; however an Amazon spokesperson refuted the claims.

Jeff Bezos Has Reportedly Received the 417-Foot ‘Koru,’ the Tallest Sailing Yacht in the World

The yacht has also been at the center of massive, worldwide controversy. Back in February 2022, Oceanco requested that a centuries-old bridge in the port city of Rotterdam be partially dismantled in order to get the behemoth out and onto the high seas. The masts, which are the same height as the Great Pyramid of Giza, simply exceeded the bridge’s 131-foot clearance and thus prevented Koru from passing under. Rotterdammers were none too pleased and threatened to pelt the yacht with rotten eggs . The request was subsequently denied, and the yacht was instead discreetly towed through Rotterdam without its mast.

The designers behind the yacht’s interior and exterior are yet to be named, but it’s clear that she’s a timeless and elegant cruiser. Koru , which is a Māori for “new beginnings,” features a sleek black hull and white superstructure. She also sports a large pool on the aft deck and a number of plush alfresco lounges.

The epic design isn’t able to accommodate a helicopter, however, as the soaring masts make it too unsafe to land. As a result, Bezos commissioned a second yacht to hold his toys and tenders. Christened Wingman, the custom 246-footer is Damen’s largest support vessel to date. It’s a good match for monumental Koru , then.

Jeff Bezos’ Giant Yacht Is Apparently Too Big to Anchor Near Others in Florida

The superyacht, called Koru, arrived in Port Everglades in Florida on Nov. 22, and has been docked near a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State.

Jeff Bezos’s yacht docked in a port. There are palm trees in the foreground and cranes in the background.

By Lola Fadulu

First, Jeff Bezos’ new megayacht was too big to pass under a bridge in the Netherlands. Now, the massive vessel’s size — it’s more than 400 feet long — has played a role in preventing it from keeping company with other private yachts in Port Everglades, Fla., where it is anchored.

Instead, the megayacht, named Koru, is hanging with huge oil tankers and general container ships. The yacht is docked there because of its size and also because of what berths were available in the seaport, according to a spokeswoman for Port Everglades.

Koru is a sailing yacht, unlike the much bigger diesel-powered boats popular with other billionaires. It is the largest sailing yacht in the world, according to Oceanco , the Dutch company that finished building the boat earlier this year.

The deck space of the three-masted schooner has three Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. The inside has a “timeless, contemporary style,” according to Oceanco, with natural wood tones, warm neutrals, and patterned textiles. It also includes a mermaid on the bow that appears to resemble Mr. Bezos’ partner, Lauren Sánchez.

Koru, which Bloomberg estimated cost about $500 million to build, arrived to the Florida port on Nov. 22 after departing from Gibraltar earlier this month, according to Marine Traffic , a real-time maritime data platform.

It was unclear why exactly Mr. Bezos docked his yacht there, but earlier this month he said that he would be moving back to Miami to be closer to his parents and to Ms. Sánchez.

Mr. Bezos had since 1994 lived in Seattle , where he started Amazon from his garage. He has already purchased two mansions in South Florida, one for $68 million and another for $79 million, according to Bloomberg News .

Bloomberg estimated his net worth to be $171 billion.

Port Everglades charges yachts larger than 400 feet at least $309.50 per 24 hours. Ships that have been closest to Koru include a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State .

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and has come to symbolize new life, growth, and peace in traditional Maori art.

Mr. Bezos’ journey with his new yacht started off rocky . Last year, city officials in Rotterdam, the Dutch city, initially agreed to dismantle De Hef, a 95-year-old bridge, so that Koru could pass through it from the nearby city where it had been built. The dismantling process would have taken more than a day, and putting it back together would have too. But after uproar from the community — including calls to throw eggs at the boat as it would have passed — Oceanco decided against it and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Jack Begg contributed research.

Let’s take a closer look inside Jeff Bezos' $500 million superyacht KORU and explore its design, sailing experience , accompanying dinghy, a recent kerfuffle, and the meaning behind its name.

In a time when yacht designs tend to be extravagant and outlandish, KORU presents a refreshing departure. As the world's largest sailing yacht at 417 feet, KORU stands out as a schooner with its two or more masts. The sleek, classic lines evoke the elegance of yachts from the early 20th century, reminiscent of J.P. Morgan Jr.'s Corsair IV. Robert B. MacKay, author of "The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars," points out the contrast between KORU and the over-the-top designs favored by the super-rich, describing them as "bloated Clorox bottles."

While the exterior design of KORU exudes classic beauty, the interior of this superyacht is a testament to opulence and sophistication. Every detail has been meticulously crafted to provide the utmost comfort and luxury for its passengers. Sumptuous materials, including fine wood finishes, marble accents, and plush furnishings, create an atmosphere of elegance and refinement. The interior spaces of KORU are vast, offering generous living areas, dining rooms, and lounges for entertainment and relaxation. State-of-the-art technology seamlessly integrates with traditional design elements, providing a harmonious blend of old-world charm and modern convenience.

Unlike many megayachts that rely on diesel power, KORU primarily harnesses the wind, making it a greener option. Don Anderson, a former captain of the world's largest single-masted sailboat, highlights the ecological aspect of sailboats and the unique experience they offer. Sailing allows passengers to be more connected to the elements and enjoy the journey itself rather than just the destination.

With KORU , Bezos can embrace the wind and waves while cruising the world's most picturesque waters. KORU boasts an impressive array of amenities and features that elevate the yachting experience to unparalleled heights. Among its luxurious offerings is an on-deck pool, providing a refreshing oasis for guests to enjoy under the sun. The pool area is complemented by spacious lounging and sunbathing areas, allowing passengers to bask in the splendor of the surroundings.

Inside, KORU features a lavish spa and wellness center, complete with a fully equipped gym, sauna, and massage rooms. Pampering oneself with rejuvenating treatments while cruising the open seas becomes an everyday luxury on board this magnificent yacht. To cater to the culinary desires of its guests, KORU boasts a world-class gourmet kitchen manned by a team of highly skilled chefs. The dining experience is elevated with formal dining rooms and al fresco dining options, where delectable cuisine is served with panoramic views of the ocean.

Every superyacht needs a support vessel to carry additional amenities and toys. KORU is no exception, and it is trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot motor yacht. These "shadows" are equipped to accommodate various recreational vehicles, such as ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines, and even helicopters. Abeona ensures that Bezos and his guests have everything they need for a luxurious and adventurous experience at sea.

With enough range to follow KORU from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean on a single tank of gas, Abeona proves to be the perfect companion. Notably, KORU is not Jeff Bezos' first foray into the world of luxury yachting. According to reports, Bezos has previously enjoyed sailing on Eos, a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg. His experiences on these remarkable vessels have undoubtedly fueled his passion for yachting and shaped his vision for KORU.

Bezos' love for the ocean and exploration aligns with the allure of yachting. The freedom and privacy that yachts provide allow him to escape the demands of his high-profile business ventures and enjoy moments of tranquility with his loved ones. With KORU, Bezos can embark on unforgettable adventures, discover new horizons, and experience the ultimate luxury at sea.

As the world's largest sailing yacht, KORU has significantly impacted the yachting industry. Its design and size challenge the conventional notion of megayachts, which typically rely on motor power. KORU's emphasis on sailing not only offers a greener alternative but also sets a new standard for luxury sailing experiences . The name "Koru" holds special significance. In Maori, it means "coil" or "loop" and represents the unfurling of a fern frond.

The koru design is a prominent feature in traditional Maori art, symbolizing new life, growth, and peace. Bezos shared a photo of a koru frond on his Instagram on January 1, 2022, hinting at the yacht's name and its symbolic ties. Brad Stone, the author of "Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire," suggests that the name reflects Bezos' personal evolution as he ventures beyond the tech world into media, Hollywood, and his new relationship with Lauren Sánchez.

Jeff Bezos' superyacht KORU showcases a departure from the norm in yacht design with its classic elegance and sailing capabilities. Offering a greener experience on the open seas, KORU allows its passengers to appreciate the journey as much as the destination. Supported by the impressive motor yacht Abeona, Bezos and his guests can enjoy a range of recreational amenities and toys. As it cruises the world's most exclusive waters, KORU serves as a testament to the allure and grandeur of the superyacht lifestyle.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and Blue Origin, known for his extraordinary wealth and investments in technology and space exploration, has recently made headlines with his latest acquisition, the Koru. This sailing yacht, built by the Dutch company Oceanco, is not just any luxury vessel; it claims to be the largest sailing yacht in the world.

Koru, a name derived from Maori meaning “coil” or “loop,” symbolizes new life, growth, and peace in traditional Maori art. This symbolism is fitting for a yacht that stands out not only for its size but also for its design and features. Unlike the typical diesel-powered boats popular among billionaires, Koru is a sailing yacht, emphasizing a blend of traditional sailing elements with modern luxury.

The yacht, which Bloomberg estimated cost about $500 million to build, boasts an impressive deck space featuring three Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. The interior design of Koru reflects a “timeless, contemporary style,” as described by Oceanco, featuring natural wood tones, warm neutrals, and patterned textiles. An intriguing detail is the mermaid figure on the bow, which appears to resemble Lauren Sánchez, Mr. Bezos’ partner.

Koru arrived at Port Everglades in Florida on November 22, after departing from Gibraltar earlier in the month, as tracked by Marine Traffic, a real-time maritime data platform. The choice of Florida for docking the yacht aligns with Bezos’ recent announcement of moving back to Miami to be closer to his parents and Ms. Sánchez. This move is a significant change for Bezos, who has lived in Seattle since 1994, where he started Amazon from his garage. His commitment to South Florida is further evidenced by his recent purchases of two mansions in the area, totaling $147 million.

The presence of Koru in Florida is not just a personal statement but also a significant event for Port Everglades. The port charges yachts larger than 400 feet at least $309.50 per 24 hours. Koru, docked near a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State, is a testament to the port’s capability to accommodate such large and luxurious vessels.

Koru’s journey to Florida was not without its controversies. Last year, there was a plan to dismantle De Hef, a 95-year-old bridge in Rotterdam, to allow Koru to pass through. However, community uproar, including threats to throw eggs at the yacht, led to the decision to tow the yacht to a different location for the attachment of its masts.

Jeff Bezos’ collection of grand transport possessions is a reflection of his immense wealth, estimated at $171 billion by Bloomberg. His fleet includes the Gulfstream G650ER, Dassault Falcon 900, and Boeing 737 private jets, along with the Bell 429 GlobalRanger and AgustaWestland AW139 helicopters. These vehicles, each a marvel in their respective categories, underscore Bezos’ penchant for luxury and high-end technology.

In conclusion, the arrival of Koru in Florida is more than just the docking of a yacht; it represents the intersection of luxury, technology, and personal lifestyle choices of one of the world’s richest individuals. As Bezos continues to make his mark in various industries, his investments in luxury transport like Koru offer a glimpse into the exclusive world of billionaire extravagance and the technological marvels it encompasses.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos Takes Delivery of World's Tallest Sailing Yacht 'Koru'

Jezz Bezos Koru sailing superyacht

The support ship is a marvel in its own right, too.

The Bezos brigantine is now on the high seas.

Ok, it's not actually a brigantine , but it is the world's tallest and most expensive sailing yacht ever built.

The predominantly private Bezos has kept details of the build mostly under wraps , save for a few unexpected public appearances that left clues regarding its elusive new new owner.

The 417-foot long three-masted sailing vessel began sea trials in August 2022. Since then, its presence has raised quite the fuss with both local and international media. Due to its size, the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands where it was being built requested a bridge in Rotterdam be temporarily dismantled to allow its passing. The Koningshaven Bridge, known locally as 'De Hef,'is a historic post-WWII landmark. The original bridge was bombed by Germany in 1940, and was subsequently rebuilt in earnest as part of the Dutch economic recovery post- war.

The request met with major publish backlash , including threats of it being pelted with eggs as it passed through the city, In response, the unfinished ship was shuttled out of Rotterdam under darkness, and without its masts, so it could be completed at a secondary shipyard.

Now finished, the newly christened Koru is setting sail. Koru is a Maori word meaning 'new beginnings' and is often symbolized through the sprouting of new plants during springtime. Good timing for the founder of Amazon .

Not much is known about Koru , but choosing Oceanco as the builder was a wise choice. The Dutch company built the similarly shaped Black Pearl , an award-winning 350 foot three masted sailing yacht, for Russian billionaire Oleg Burlakov in 2016. Oceanco also built the Bravo Eugenia for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones , which carries a similar shape and design to Koru .

Bezos' new sailboat is now the second longest sailing yacht in the world behind the 469 foot Sailing Yacht A owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko . However, it will be the tallest with its three masts measuring more than 230 feet high. It's also reportedly the largest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands. The impressive engineering feat Bezos back a cool $485 million, which shockingly is peanuts considering the Amazon founders wealth jumped by $75 billion in 2020 alone.

Koru is currently on her maiden voyage to Gibraltar, according to the Superyacht Times .

koru yacht meaning

One of her most notable features, aside from the massive sails, is that unlike most superyachts she does not have a helipad. Due to the masts and the inability to land a helicopter near moving sails, a secondary 246 foot (75 m) 'support yacht' was launched in early February to support Koru . With the apropos name of Abeona , the Greek goddess who presided over travelers, the support ship was built by Damen Yachting. Designed to carry a massive array of tenders, toys, and various accessories, Abeona also has accommodations for uo to 54 crew and additional guests. Abeona reportedly added an extra $75 million to the cost.

You can get the first look at Koru in the video from Superyacht Times below:

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has named his $500 million superyacht a Maori word, 'Koru', which translates to 'new beginnings'.

The new name of Bezos' controversial 127-metre Oceanco Y721 yacht was revealed this week when it began transmitting on the vessel's automatic identification system (AIS).

It will be the tallest sailing yacht in the world when it is delivered to the Amazon founder, overtaking the current largest ocean-going passenger ship Sea Cloud.

The billionaire commissioned the construction of the superyacht, which hit the headlines last year when the $500 million vessel required an iconic Dutch bridge to be dismantled in order to reach the open sea.

Bezos said he would pay the Dutch city of Rotterdam to dismantle and then rebuild part of the historic 95-year-old bridge so the vessel could pass through.

The ship, which is almost twice the length of an Airbus A380, first hit the water in August.

Its triple masts reach a staggering 70 meters high, making the sailing yacht even taller than the Great Pyramid of Giza.

What is the koru, importance of the koru in maori culture, symbolic significance of koru, modern use of koru.

Possibly the most popular of all Maori symbols, the Koru (Maori for loop or coil ) is one of the most important symbols of Maori traditions, representing new life, spiritual growth, and progress. In this article, we will be exploring the origins of Koru, its significance in religions, characteristics of the symbol, its symbolic meanings, and contemporary usage.

Koru in nature

The Koru symbol is in the shape of a spiral, loop, or coil, and resembles an unfurling Silver Fern sprout.

The Maori people believed in a plethora of gods and goddesses who thrived within the natural environment. They gave immense importance to the earth’s elements, and all their spiritualistic rituals were rooted in the sun, water, and soil.

The Silver Fern was one such element that was an integral part of Maori religious practices. The Silver Fern, prevalent in the forests of New Zealand, was revered for its abilities of growth and regeneration. For the Maori people, the budding fronds of the tree represented a new season and marked the beginnings of a new calendar.

While some Koru symbols are painted independently, others are drawn alongside patterns and designs on artworks, buildings, and jewelry.  The Maori typically paints the Koru in colors of red, white, and black.

To understand the Koru’s significance, it’s important to get some background knowledge of the Maori.

The Maoris are the indigenous people of New Zealand. The Maori people give immense importance to ritualistic traditions and spiritual practices, with symbols and hieroglyphs playing an integral part in their art, culture, and heritage. These symbols are unique and embedded with philosophical beliefs passed down from ancient mythological lore. The Maori are renowned for their intricate art with many patterns, colors, and designs.

This brings us to the Koru.

The Koru features in almost all of Maori art, assuming different shapes and forms, and has existed for thousands of years.

Archaeologists have uncovered Koru in ancient dwellings of the Maori people as well as in Marae, which is one of the most important structures in Maori civilization. The Marae is a meeting house for Maori people to discuss laws, ethics, society, and religion. These buildings have traditionally been decorated with Koru designs. Even today, the rafters of the central platform of the Marae are illustrated with various Koru symbols.

The Koru symbol can also be found in Europe, but this is because it was introduced into by Captain Cook, who was one of the first Europeans to acknowledge the greatness of the Maori civilization.

koru symbolism

There are many symbolic meanings associated with Koru. Some of them will be illustrated below.

  • Symbol of Prestige

For the Maoris, the Koru is an integral part of the Maori body art – the Moko. When used in the Moko tattoos, the Koru represents authority, prestige and spiritual power.

  • Symbol of Life

The spiral design of the Koru symbol represents a sprouting fern. The fern which springs from the folds of the earth is believed to represent survival and existence. Maori civilization gave immense importance to newly budding plants and cherished them as a symbol of life and vitality.

  • Symbol of Movement

The fluid, spiral shape of the Koru symbolizes eternal movement, while the inner coil is a symbol of the cyclic process of life and death. For the Maori, the dead went back to their origins in the soil, only to be reborn again. The Maori’s believed in a transfer of energy that was always in movement and could not be fully destroyed.

  • Symbol of Growth

The silver fern of the Koru reflects growth and development. Growth can be in terms of spiritual changes such as newly attained wisdom or enlightenment. It can also reflect growth in terms of physical prowess and the strength of youth.

  • Symbol of Harmony

According to Maori beliefs, the Koru symbol represents a harmonious and balanced universe. The symbol is designed in such a manner that its proportions indicate the equilibrium of the universe. Koru necklaces and amulets are often gifted to newly engaged couples as a symbol of harmony and companionship.

The Koru symbol has gained universal popularity in contemporary times. Some of the ways in which the symbol is used include:

  • Jewelry and Tattoos

The Koru symbol is a popular design for jewelry and is predominantly carved into bone or Pounamu stone to make chains, amulets, and bracelets. Jewelry etched with the Koru symbol is given to newly married couples for a long and happy life. It is also gifted to those who are joining college or starting a new job.

The Koru is also a popular symbol for tattoos, especially among Maori and New Zealanders in general. However, because the symbol has become so widespread, it’s used globally often without much knowledge of its significance. Below is a list of the editor’s top picks featuring the Koru symbol.

A stylized version of the Koru symbol was adopted as the logo of Air New Zealand. The logo was designed in 1973, by Tom Elliot, to mark the arrival of the airline’s first wide-body jet, known as the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. The Koru symbol was painted onto the tail of the jet for prominent visibility.

In 2016, New Zealand called for a vote on new flag designs. One of the flags, designed by visual artist Friedenscreich Hundertwasser, featured the Koru symbol. The symbol was the central attraction in Hundertwasser’s design. Although the flag was not entirely successful, the Koru symbol gained wide recognition and acknowledgement with Hundertwasser’s illustration.

The Koru symbol became universally acclaimed with the artworks of Gordon Walters, a Wellington based artist. In his artwork, Gordon Walters represented the cultural heritage of New Zealand and the Maori people. From the 1950’s onwards, Walters dedicated entire series of paintings exclusively to the Koru symbol. Walters art pieces are an integration of modern art and ancient Maori patterns.

Gordon Walters’ artwork provided inspiration to Colin McCahon, one of New Zealand’s most famous painters. McCahon incorporated Maori patterns and the Koru symbol into several of his artworks.

The Koru symbol has played a central role in Maori symbolism, prominently featured in their body artwork, architecture, accessories and decorations. Today, the symbol has gained widespread acclaim and universal recognition in contemporary times. The cultural practices of the Maori people are kept alive by the various modern usages of the symbol.
