Yes, it's always a good idea to have insurance when you hire a yacht or boat. Insurance can protect you against unexpected expenses or damages that may occur during your charter, such as damage to the yacht, injury to passengers, or loss of personal belongings. SEARADAR offers its own insurance product, the free deposit pack, which allows you to insure 100% of the deposit. This provides an extra layer of protection and peace of mind during your charter.

The qualifications you need to hire a boat or yacht will depend on the country and region where you plan to sail. In Croatia, for example, you are required by law to have a valid sailing license or certificate to operate a yacht or boat. The type of license or certificate you need will depend on the size and type of vessel you plan to operate. If you have a valid sailing license or certificate from your home country, it may be recognized in Croatia. If you don't have a sailing license or certificate, you can hire a skipper to handle the yacht for you.

If your yacht breaks down during your charter, the first thing you should do is to inform us as soon as possible. We will provide you with instructions on what to do next and may send a technician to fix the problem or provide you with a replacement yacht, depending on the severity of the issue.

When hiring a yacht, there are several important factors to consider to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some things to keep in mind: Size and Type of Yacht: Consider the size and type of yacht that will best suit your needs. Factors to consider include the number of people in your party, your budget, and your itinerary. Crew: Determine whether you need a crew for your yacht charter. If you are an experienced sailor, you may be able to charter a yacht without a crew. However, if you are new to sailing or want to relax and enjoy the trip, a crewed yacht may be a better option. Itinerary: Plan your itinerary in advance to ensure that you visit the destinations you want to see. Research the area and check the availability of mooring spaces and marinas. Season and Weather: Consider the season and weather when planning your trip. Summer is the most popular season for yacht charter in many destinations, but it may be crowded and more expensive. Be aware of weather conditions and avoid sailing in bad weather. Budget: Set a budget for your yacht charter and be aware of additional costs, such as fuel, mooring fees, and food and drink expenses. Choose a yacht that fits within your budget and consider booking in advance to get the best deals. Safety: Make sure that the yacht you hire is properly equipped with safety equipment, such as life jackets, flares, and a first aid kit. Be aware of safety regulations and follow the rules of the sea.

Yes, indicate your request in the comments to the order, and we will give you a deferred payment by placing the yacht on reserve for you.

Yacht charters are available for any period. But there are generally accepted rules. For example, sailing yachts are most often rented weekly: Saturday to Saturday. You can charter for 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, etc.

You can rent a yacht with a captain who will take care of all the issues related to the yacht's management. Simply choose this option in the extras. All you need to do is get with your friends together, bring all the essentials and embark on an exciting yacht trip! It's easier than you think, even if it's the first charter you've ever been on!

Our services are absolutely free for you. We don't charge any commissions or extra fees to our customers.

There are several reasons why you should consider booking a yacht with SEARADAR: Over 500 satisfied customers worldwide: SEARADAR has a proven track record of providing high-quality yacht charter services, with many satisfied customers from around the world. Modern, high-tech startup: SEARADAR was founded in 2017 and has since grown into a modern, high-tech startup. Our team of 50+ people works in office and remotely from over 10 countries, which allows us to provide a high level of customer service and support. Experienced sailors: Our founders and many team members are experienced sailors, which means we understand what skippers need and we speak the same language. This allows us to provide personalized service and advice to our customers. Exclusive agreements: We work with practically all the world's charter companies and have exclusive agreements and conditions with many of them. This means we can offer our customers the best selection of yachts at the most competitive prices. Rigorous selection process: During the selection process, we analyze over 30,000 boats from all available market databases, calculate quality metrics, and check yacht availability in options. This allows us to provide our customers with a carefully curated selection of the most suitable yachts. Experienced experts: A team of experienced experts analyzes your request and, using specifically designed software, creates a selection of the most suitable yachts for you. This ensures that you get the yacht that best meets your needs and preferences. Insurance product: SEARADAR has its own insurance product, free deposit pack, which allows you to insure 100% of the deposit. This provides peace of mind and protects you against any unexpected expenses or damages.

The cost of renting a sailboat or catamaran in Croatia can vary widely depending on factors such as the type and size of the vessel, the season, the duration of the rental, and the location of the rental. Generally speaking, the cost of renting a sailboat in Croatia can range from around 1,500 to 4,000 euros per week, while the cost of renting a catamaran can range from around 3,000 to 10,000 euros per week. It's important to note that these prices are for the rental of the vessel only and do not include additional costs such as fuel, mooring fees, and provisions.

Whether or not you need a visa to visit Croatia depends on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Citizens of the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries, as well as Switzerland, do not need a visa to enter Croatia, and can stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Citizens of some non-EU/EEA countries, such as the United States, Canada, and Australia, can also enter Croatia without a visa for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, for purposes of tourism or business. However, citizens of some non-EU/EEA countries do need a visa to enter Croatia, even for short stays. You can check the visa requirements for your country on the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs website or contact the nearest Croatian embassy or consulate for more information. It's important to note that all travelers to Croatia must have a valid passport or other travel document, and may also need to provide proof of sufficient funds for their stay and a return ticket or onward travel itinerary.

Yes, it is standard practice to pay a deposit when hiring a yacht in Croatia. The deposit serves as a security deposit and is designed to cover any damages that may occur to the yacht during your rental period. The amount of the deposit can vary depending on the size and type of yacht, but is typically around 30-50% of the total rental cost. The deposit is usually paid when you sign the rental contract and is refunded at the end of the rental period, provided there are no damages or losses to the yacht. It's important to carefully read and understand the terms of the rental contract before signing, including the deposit amount, refund policies, and any other fees or charges that may apply.

Free Deposit Pack

With FDP (Free Deposit Pack), you have the chance to avoid a full security deposit and lock in your funds. Just pay 20% upfront (non-refundable), and experience a hassle-free journey. * The price of the FDP rises to 25% if booked less than 30 days before the charter.

sailing in croatia

The best way to explore

Welcome aboard! Books could be (and have been) written about sailing in Croatia. Our country is truly best experienced by sailing so if you’ve been eyeing our short catamaran cruises , you’re in for a treat! These trips are super popular, but since they’re still fairly new in the travel world and not your typical week-long charters, our guests tend to have a few questions about them. Well, fret not! We’re here to give you all the answers you need. So, sit back, relax, and let’s dive into it!

Sailing 101

What is the best time for sailing in croatia.

The best time for sailing in Croatia typically falls between May and September. During these months, the weather is warm and sunny, with calm seas and gentle winds, providing ideal conditions for sailing. Additionally, the sea temperature is comfortable for swimming and water activities. However, it’s worth noting that July and August tend to be the busiest months with more tourists and higher prices. If you prefer quieter sailing conditions and more affordable rates, May, June, and September are excellent choices.

What is the difference between standard and cabin charter? Will we be alone on the boat?

When chartering a boat, you pay for the vessel and cover fuel and marina fees as you go. Everything else can be added on – a skipper, crew, sports equipment and meals. Cabin charter is a type of sailing arrangement where individual travellers or small groups can book a cabin (or multiple cabins) on a shared sailing yacht or boat, rather than chartering the entire vessel themselves. In a cabin charter, guests share common areas such as the deck and salon with fellow passengers.

It is possible to book any number of cabins, including the entire boat. Solo travellers are welcome.

sunsail yacht charters croatia

Are there any specific rules for behaviour on board/boat etiquette?

Since you are sharing the boat with other guests, be polite and kind, aware of others and their personal space.

Listen to the instructions of the crew. The skipper will give a safety talk before the trip.

Commonly, no shoes are worn on the boat. Barefoot or special boat shoes provide best grip, but flip flops and clean sneakers are acceptable if they are clean and only worn on the boat.

Guests are encouraged to dry off on deck after swimming because stepping inside will result in wet floors, and these are a serious safety hazard. Please do not lie on the furniture while wet or wearing sunblock.

C an I participate in sailing activities and learn more about it? Can I do the trip if I don’t have any sailing experience?

You don’t need any sailing experience, but if you are interested in learning, our experienced skippers will be happy to share their knowledge. Don’t hesitate to ask.

Do people often get seasick?

Even if you usually get seasick on the boats, that may not be the case as catamarans tend to be more stable. Furthermore, the Adriatic does not often get big waves so you may just be ok sailing in Croatia. You can also take medication (Dramamine) to prevent this condition and if you start feeling seasick, looking straight ahead at the horizon and fresh air can help. The crew will help you. Don’t forget to stay hydrated.

What happens if the weather is bad and we cannot sail?

In the unlikely event that we are unable to set sail due to adverse weather conditions, your guide will always look for alternatives such as cycling, hiking or something else that suits the group’s interests.

We prioritize the well-being of our guests above all else, implementing stringent measures to guarantee a secure and enjoyable journey every step of the way.

The practical stuff

What is served for breakfast.

We provide a traditional Croatian breakfast experience onboard the boat. To kick off your morning, we’ll serve coffee, tea, refreshing juice and cereal. Our spread features bread, cheese, cured meat, fruit, vegetables, milk, and yogurt. For guests with gluten allergies, we offer gluten-free bread and for vegetarians and pescatarians, we provide suitable alternatives to ensure everyone enjoys their meal. Just make sure to let us know in advance.

What do guests usually do for lunches and dinners?

Croatian Seafood Traditional

Another reason why Croatia is a top sailing destination are our exquisite restaurants that cater primarily to yachts. Excellent local and private restaurants will be available during lunchtime and dinner. They have received excellent feedback from previous guests for their value for money and we strongly recommend trying their specialties to all those interested in discovering authentic Croatian food. The skipper will be happy to make reservations and give suggestions. You are welcome to eat as a group or on your own if you prefer – in most places where we stop there is a choice of at least two restaurants.

Are there drinks available on the boat and can we bring our own?

Croatia has great tap water and while the water from the tanks on our boats is potable, we recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and refilling it with tap water along the way. Guests are allowed to bring snacks, water, non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks on board, but please note that fridge space is limited. There will be shops available each day, so you will be able to restock during the trip.

How should I pack for the tour? Is there a limit for how much luggage we can bring?

sunsail yacht charters croatia

Less is more. Once you book, you will receive a document with details about this trip including a packing list.

The cabin is small and narrow, with limited storage space and it would be the best to have cabin sized luggage or a soft duffle bag containing essential items. Additionally, don’t forget to pack something warm for the cooler evenings.

You can store extra luggage at the starting point in our office in Komolac for round trips. That said, we understand you are traveling longer than just the few days with us. We suggest packing your bags so that larger pieces can be stored away, and have smaller bags with the items you will need for the duration of the cruise.

During the trip

How many crew members are there.

There are two crew members on most of our trips – a skipper and a guide who will avoid overcrowded destinations ensuring you get the most authentic short cruise experience.

Do you have snorkelling gear on the boat?

We carry paddleboards (SUP), paddles), and snorkelling gear.

Our boats do not have fins or water shoes and you may consider bringing these as Croatia mostly has rocky beaches. The Adriatic also has a lot of sea urchins, but these are good news unless you step on one – sea urchins are a sign of clean sea.

Is fishing from the boat allowed?

You need a licence for finishing in Croatia. Fishing from the boat is not allowed.

What sort of safety and emergency equipment do you have on the boats while sailing ?

We carry life jackets, fire extinguishers, emergency signaling devices, first aid kits, and safety rafts.

Do you have any recommendations for places to stay before and after the trip?

We recommend staying at the Vimbula hotel the night before the trip. The hotel is a walking distance from our base and starting point. If you are looking to extend your cruise, we offer several short experiences with great accommodations in the area.

PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (“ Terms ”) CAREFULLY AS THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS, REMEDIES AND OBLIGATIONS AS WELL AS A SECTION GOVERNING THE JURISDICTION AND VENUE OF DISPUTES. THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.

  • No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. Without limiting the above, no warranty or guarantee is made (i) regarding the acceptance of any reservation request or Charter Reservation; (ii) regarding the availability of Charters, or any other product and/or services through Broker; (iii) that the use of Broker’s website will be error-free; or (iv) regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability or quality of any information, content, data, service, advice or merchandise provided by Broker or through Broker’s website.

Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If, despite the limitation above, Broker or the Broker and Charter Releasees are found liable for any loss or damage which arises out of or in any way connected with any of the occurrences described above, then Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Supplier and the Broker and Charter Releasees will in no event exceed, in the aggregate, the greater of (a) the Broker Fee, and (b) One-Hundred Dollars (US $100.00).

The foregoing limitation of liability reflects the allocation of risk between the parties. The limitations specified in this section will survive and apply even if any limited remedy specified in these Terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose. The limitations of liability provided in these Terms inure to the benefit of Broker and/or its providers.

The foregoing does not affect any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

  • Limitation on Time to File Claims . ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF RELATING TO BROKER’S SERVICES OR THE WEBSITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.
  • Waiver . No waiver by Broker of any term or condition set forth in these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or condition or a waiver of any other term or condition, and any failure of the Broker to assert a right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
  • Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.
  • Governing Law and Mandatory Venue . The laws of the State of Florida govern the rights and obligations of the parties to this Agreement and the interpretation, construction and enforceability thereof. You agree that any action or proceeding initiated by Charterer against Broker shall be brought solely in the federal and state courts of Hillsborough County, Florida, and you submit to the jurisdiction of those courts and waive any objections to the exercise of personal jurisdiction over you by those courts. In the event any action or proceeding is initiated by Charterer in a court outside of Hillsborough County, Florida, Charterer agrees to pay Broker’s costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees associated with defending such action or proceeding and waives any and all defenses to the transfer of said action or proceeding, whether jurisdictional or otherwise, to a federal or state court in Hillsborough County, Florida.

6 ultimate island-hopping itineraries for 2024

Explore the world from the deck of your own yacht with a skippered charter, bareboat or flotilla holiday. Whether you’re a first-timer, a foodie or a family, there’s a sailing itinerary to suit every type of traveller.

sunsail yacht charters croatia

Craving a holiday with the freedom to escape the crowds and explore hidden coves, secluded bays and uninhabited islands? Dreaming of anchoring somewhere to take a dip without another person in sight? Sailing enables you to access remote spots that are often inaccessible by land and to experience the diversity of a region, exploring islands, villages and resorts in a single trip. Whether you're just starting out, or keen to set out with little ones in tow, these itineraries suit every type of sailor.

1. Best for first timers: British Virgin Islands (BVIs)

Calm seas, sheltered anchorages, reliable steady trade winds and easy line-of-sight sailing make the BVIs one of the world’s best sailing destinations for less experienced sailors. The proximity of its islands also means you only need to sail for an hour or two to gain a sense of adventure and achievement as you successfully navigate to the next port of call. Set sail in Tortola and continue on to Virgin Gorda to witness The Baths, a geological wonder made up of granite boulders that stretch down the beach into the sea. Look out for hawksbill turtles as you sail on to tiny specks of land such as the idyllic Saba Rock, and be sure to end the day with a rum cocktail or two at one of the region’s many laid-back bars, which are often perched on unblemished stretches of white sand.

2. Best for families: Croatia

The calm, clear waters of the Adriatic combined with favourable weather conditions in summer provide easy sailing for families and, with more than 1,000 islands dotted along the Dalmatian Coast, there’s a range of activities and attractions with short hops to keep kids engaged. Set sail from the picturesque marina village of Agana and cruise gently to islands such as Brač, Šolta and Hvar, encouraging children to help out on board while keeping an eye out for passing dolphins. With their sheltered bays and clear waters, these islands are ideal stops for families. Spend an afternoon paddling in Brač’s Bobovišća Bay, before setting sail for the remote islands of the Kornati Archipelago, a wild and beautiful national park known for its empty hiking trails. Sailing stops here can be educational, too, with a plethora of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and picturesque port towns steeped in history.

3. Best for food-lovers: Italy

Why base yourself on land to sample Italy’s incredible gastronomy when you can sail from region to region tasting the very best food and wine at numerous ports of call? Sunsail’s SailEatalia’s Italian Cuisine Procida Flotilla departs from the glamourous port town of Procida and sails to the Pontine Islands along the sun-soaked Amalfi Coast, offering stops to taste local cuisine, from classic dishes to regional delicacies as well as the country’s finest wine. Sample Ischia's iconic stewed rabbit in an independent restaurant at the top of a mountain or try the Italian coastal delicacy alici da portare (pasta with anchovies, olives and capers) in the quaint fishing village of Cetara.

4. Best for winter sun: Antigua

Gloriously warm weather between December and May and around 365 powdery white beaches lapped by clear waters make Antigua a popular winter sun destination for British travellers. Sailors can also relax knowing the region has consistent trade winds, safe anchorages and fairly short distances between ports, giving you more time to explore a variety of attractions at your own pace. Drop anchor in Deep Bay to snorkel around the famous shipwreck the Andes , discover uninhabited islands and visit famous places like Nelson’s Dockyard to sip cocktails and dance to the lively music of traditional steel bands.

5. Best for culture vultures: Croatia

A cultural treasure trove with 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites ranging from Roman fortresses to hilltop castles, Croatia is a mecca for sailors with a penchant for history and art. Start and finish a week’s charter in Dubrovnik to explore one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities on Earth, touring ancient citadels and Renaissance palaces, and be sure to include Lokrum, home to the ruins of a Benedictine monastery. Sail north and discover Mljet National Park and the island getaway of Korčula, thought to be the birthplace of famed explorer Marco Polo, where museums, galleries and excellent restaurants line the beautiful cobbled streets and defensive walls of the town.

6. Best for island-hopping: Greece

With thousands of islands scattered fairly close together, sailing from one to another is a breeze with the promise of a remote white sand or perfect pebble beach around every headland. Sailors are spoilt for choice, but the Ionian Islands, off the west coast of the mainland, are ideal for beginners looking for tranquil stretches of gin-clear water with light winds and warm temperatures in summer. Sail to Ithaca or Kefaloni in the south or to Lefkas, Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu. While Corfu is known for its party vibe and high-end beach bars, others, like tiny Antipaxos, feature just a scattering of houses, no proper roads and a couple of charming waterside tavernas where you can watch local fishermen bring in the day's catch.

Master the mediterranean – the simple guide to med mooring.

Just one of the great perks of Sunsail Yacht Ownership is that you get to take advantage of all of the spectacular sailing destinations that Sunsail has to offer all over the globe: From the tropical palm tree-lined beaches of the Caribbean, the mesmerizing sights and sounds of exotic Thailand or the culture filled ports and rich history of the Mediterranean. But you are not alone if the word 'Med' fills you with slight trepidation.

Med mooring, Medi-mooring or the reason many weekend sailors avoid the Mediterranean, can be an intimidating factor when considering a Mediterranean yacht charter. Squeezing your boat stern first into a packed marina while having to anchor or catch a slime line at the same time as battling crosswinds as droves of spectators pack the town dock, phones in hand, ready to capture possible YouTube gold, is reason enough to postpone your Mediterranean sailing adventures if you are not that well acquainted with the European standard of docking.

Nowhere does there ensue more chaos than with theoretically simple-sounding med mooring. The basics of executing the perfect med mooring are to line up your approach to your assigned slip stern first, then either drop the anchor or grab a slime line or mooring ball, and back up until you are close enough to pass the stern lines to the dockhand or have a crew member jump off and tie on the windward stern line first followed by the second stern line. Technically, you should be docked perfectly. But let's break this process down step by step.

That's What Fenders Are For

First things first. You will get very, very close to boats on either side of you, especially in a bustling, packed marina in the middle of the Mediterranean summer. Don't panic. That's what fenders are for. Make sure fenders are out on both your port and starboard side.

Secondly, communication is key! Make sure your crew members know exactly what it is that you want them to do. Now, there are two ways of going about doing this. Firstly, you can yell and scream frantic instructions as you approach the dock. Or you can calm down and precisely explain what you want your crew members to do before you even enter the marina. We highly recommend option number two. But if you are going for entertainment value and wish to have your 15 minutes of online fame, then option number one will be wildly amusing for everyone not on your boat.

Instruct crew members properly on their duties and who will pass stern lines, catch a slime line, mooring ball, or drop the anchor. Having a calm and collected crew who know what they are doing will do wonders in helping you feel in control of docking in the Mediterranean. The Sunsail base in Croatia has a great video on how to calmly execute a med mooring if you need some inspiration.

Mooring Ball, Slime Line Or Anchor

This might be the most confusing part of executing a med mooring: Are you dropping anchor to keep your bow in place, or do you need to pick up a mooring ball or the aptly named slime line? Mediterranean marinas will mostly either have a slime line or have you drop anchor. This you can make sure of by contacting the marina on vhf before heading in to dock, and in the very likely case that no one answers in the busy med season, you would have to do a quick look at the boats around you as you come in to see whether they have their anchors out or a line tied to the bow.

A slime line resembles a mooring ball anchored to the seabed's bottom. When med mooring, the end of the slime line will be attached to the dock, from where a dockhand will pass the line to your boat, and you would have to walk it to the bow and cleat it off tightly. Sometimes, there is one slime line, and sometimes, two must be attached to both the bow port and starboard cleats. Always put on the windward line first to keep the boat stable and avoid getting blown off.

Remember that all the boats in the marina will have slime lines in front of them, so do not prop-wrap them!

4-Jan-03-2024-07-04-01-5904-PM

Don't Get It Twisted

On the other hand, it can be more tricky if you have to anchor, especially in crowded Mediterranean marinas with numerous anchors strewn about.

To ensure your anchor does not end up like spaghetti twisted on a fork, ensure your approach is perfect and straight ahead in front of your assigned berthing spot. But most importantly, you must commit! It's once you start panicking and questioning yourself and flinging the boat backward and forward that you will begin to lose control over it.

Once you have completely lined up your boat to your assigned slip, start dropping the anchor about three boat lengths before the dock. This is the general rule of thumb but could vary with different depths in marinas and weather conditions. Once you have dropped enough chain, back down until you feel the anchor bite (without hitting the dock!) Once the anchor has set, pass over both of your stern lines to the dock. Depending on the setup, you might have a crinkle – a large metal loop attached to the dock that the line will pass through, and you will tie the line off back on the boat - or a traditional cleat.

Once the stern lines and bow slime line or anchor have been secured, you can begin to adjust your boat to get it the correct distance from the dock by dropping more chain or loosening or tightening your stern lines until your passerelle is able to reach the dock.

How To Avoid Getting Anchors Crossed

Naturally, this question immediately springs to mind once you think about the logistics of anchoring in a crowded marina with numerous anchors strewn around in all directions in front of you. Add in the general lack of visibility in marinas from all the movement kicking up the seabed, and it does not make it easy to spot anchors. So, how do you avoid getting anchors crossed in a busy marina?

Anchor as parallel as possible to your neighbors while also being mindful of other boats anchored directly across you. Depending on weather conditions, the rule of thumb is to stop dropping your anchor about a boat length from the dock to get close to the dock or wall. If you find yourself in a situation where you run out of chain, and your boat will not get close enough to the dock, you will have to pull up the anchor and start over again. This is nothing to be ashamed of and happens to the best of us. Make sure your stern dock lines are long enough to reach the crinkles.

But should you, obviously by no fault of your own, find yourself in a situation where another boat has twisted your anchor like spaghetti on a fork, here are some tips on freeing a tangled anchor .

Step-By-Step Successful Med Mooring

1. Know What You Are Getting Yourself Into When sailing in unfamiliar waters, make sure to review your cruising guides, online sailing forums, advice from fellow sailors and marina websites to get a good idea of the layout of the marinas you will be visiting. Before heading in to dock, also contact the marina via VHF to confirm what kind of berth they will be putting you in. Will you be going side-to on a finger pontoon or stern-to-med mooring? If you are med mooring, verify if you need to drop anchor, grab slime lines, or catch a mooring ball. It is also helpful to ask the marina about any other obstacles or conditions that you need to be aware of, like extremely shallow spots or strong tides. This way, you will know precisely what you are getting yourself into, and you will be able to mentally prepare to execute the perfect med mooring maneuver.

2. Prepare the Boat and Crew Communicate calmly and clearly what you want each crew member to do. Depending on how many crew you have, you will need someone dropping the anchor, grabbing and securing the slime line or mooring ball and handling the two stern lines. Prepare the boat by having your fenders evenly spread out around the widest parts of your boat on both sides before entering the marina, ensuring you have long enough stern lines and that your anchor is open and free from obstructions. Remember, the aim of a smooth docking procedure is to get your crew to secure the windward lines that will keep you in place first before putting on secondary lines.

3. Do a Drive By Before you consider backing into your assigned med mooring slip, do a quick drive-by to scope out the situation. Ensure that your lines and fenders are all in the right place; if not, you can quickly make adjustments. Take note of any hazards, like slime lines heading from the bow of other boats into the water or where other anchors are and plan your approach accordingly.

4. Choose Your Approach Give yourself as much space as possible to get a clear run. The key is to go fast enough to clear the prop-walk and gain control over your steerage, yet still going slow enough to stop quickly if needed. There is no shame in bailing on an attempt to dock when you realize something is going wrong. Rather, slowly and calmly abort your attempt, realign, and start over. There is no shame in taking a few attempts to make sure you do it right.

5. All Hands on Deck As you start to back into your slip, your crew should all be at their designated duties, ready to catch and secure lines. It is also handy to know how long your passerelle is so that you know how far or close to the dock your stern needs to be.

6. Adjust and Secure At this point, all your lines should be secured, and if you find yourself too close or far from the dock, you can adjust your lines until you find your sweet spot and your passerelle can reach the dock.

And finally, you are ready for a cold drink! If you need more of a confidence boost, you will find a plethora of resources at your disposal online that will inspire you to book your next owners' week at any of our Mediterranean Sunsail bases.
