‘Alfa Nero’ is a 269.03ft  /82m  custom motor yacht built in 2007 by Oceanco and last refitted in 2013. The yacht’s interior has been designed by Alberto Pinto and her exterior styling is by Nuvolari & Lenard.

81m Oceanco superyacht Alfa Nero finds new owner

The 81.3-metre Alfa Nero has been sold for $40 million with Northrop & Johnson's Richard Higgins bringing the buyer and assistance from FEMA Management (Federal Emergency Management Agency) on the side of the seller. According to Northrop & Johnson, the yacht was on the market just ten days before closing. 

The sale brings two years of legal wrangling and issues around unpaid crew wages to an end, following the yacht's arrest in 2022. At the time, she was put under investigation amid allegations that her owner was sanctioned and was later declared "abandoned" by the government of Antigua and Barbuda.

"The proceeds from the sale will be used to fulfill various obligations, including settling outstanding debts owed to creditors and the crew since the yacht’s arrival," read a statement by the Antigua Newsroom. "In addition to covering these debts, a portion of the proceeds will be allocated to address the $220 million funding gap [in the local government] recorded for the first half of 2024".

In June 2023, between her abandonment and current sale, she was sold at auction to former Google CEO Eric Schmidt for $67,000,677 but the sale was not finalised due to legal complications. This could be referring to a last-minute application by Flying Dutchman Overseas Limited (understood to be the registered owner of the vessel) to block the sale ahead of the auction.

Since then, "the extended stay of the vessel has presented significant financial, environmental, and other challenges for Antigua and Barbuda," according to a government spokesperson. Issues around vessel maintenance, fuel costs, legal fees and unpaid crew wages were all under scrutiny since the yacht's seizure.

Alfa Nero is notable for her aft deck pool which stretches 12 metres and can be raised to form a helipad or dancefloor- a feature that was especially impressive when the yacht was delivered in 2007. Nuvolari Lenard is responsible for her exterior design.

Oligarchen-yacht verkauft inselstaat wird luxus-schiff nach mehr als zwei jahren endlich los.

Schwer vorstellbar, aber bittere Realität: Während sich Einzelpersonen den Betrieb einer Mega-Yacht offenbar problemlos leisten können, leiden kleine Staaten wie Antigua und Barbuda enorm, wenn sie für den kostspieligen Unterhalt solcher Schiffe aufkommen müssen. Über zwei Jahre riss die "Alfa Nero" ein Loch in die Staatskasse – und jetzt ist das Schiff nach mehreren Anläufen endlich verkauft.

Das Schiff gehörte angeblich Andrej Gurjew, dem ehemaligen Leiter von Phosagro, einem der vier weltweit größten Hersteller von Düngemitteln. Es wurde nach der russischen Invasion in der Ukraine im Hafen der Insel Antigua an die Kette gelegt und vor etwa einem Jahr offiziell beschlagnahmt. Gurjew gilt als enger Vertrauter Putins und steht daher auf unterschiedlichen Sanktionslisten.

Die " Alfa Nero " sollte anschließend verkauft werden, um das viele Geld, welches in deren Erhalt gesteckt wurde, wieder einzuspielen. Doch aus dem Vorhaben wurde zunächst nichts. Kurz nachdem der ehemalige Google-CEO Eric Schmidt das Schiff für 67,6 Millionen US-Dollar übernehmen wollte, brach vor Gericht ein Streit los. Schmidt zog sein Gebot zurück, die anderen Bieter taten es ihm gleich.

Denn obwohl man eine letzte einstweilige Verfügung des ehemaligen Eigners zuvor abgelehnt hatte, schaltete sich dessen Tochter, Yulia Gurjewa, mit aller Macht ein und gab an, dass ihr das Schiff gehöre. Erst später wurde sie ebenfalls sanktioniert, wodurch ihre Ansprüche auf das beschlagnahmte Schiff erloschen.

Nun berichtet " Antigua Observer ", dass der Premierminister des Inselstaats, Gaston Browne, die finale Abwicklung verkündet habe. Für die "Alfa Nero" habe ein nicht genannter Käufer, laut Medienberichten ein reicher Türke, 40 Millionen US-Dollar geboten. Der üblicherweise sehr gut informierte Youtuber " Esysman " erklärte, dass der Kaufpreis inzwischen überwiesen worden sei und die Regierung die Papiere ausgehändigt habe.

Kleiner Haken: Offenbar musste man dem Käufer versprechen, dass finanzielle Folgen aus weiteren Gerichtsverfahren nicht zu seinen Lasten gehen. Was das am Ende für Antigua und Barbuda bedeutet, bleibt offen. Der Anwalt von Gurjewa kündigte bereits an, weiterhin um die Mega-Yacht kämpfen zu wollen.

Nach Angaben des "Antigua Observer" war es für das kleine Land aber äußerst wichtig, so schnell wie möglich von der Wartung des Schiffes entbunden zu werden. Ohne auch nur einen Meter zu fahren, verschlingt die "Alfa Nero" jede Woche 28.000 US-Dollar – demnach hätten die 15 Monate in den Händen der Behörden 1,7 Millionen US-Dollar Steuerlast verursacht, die Kosten für den gesamtes Zeitraum im Hafen der Insel liegt also weit über zwei Millionen US-Dollar. Bei etwa 98.000 Einwohnern geht eine solche Summe nicht spurlos an den öffentlichen Kassen vorbei.

"Alfa Nero" soll als Charterschiff in der Karibik bleiben

Auf Antigua und Barbuda beginnt in diesem Monat die Hurrikansaison. Die Hafenbetreiber sind also durchaus daran interessiert, dass die "Alfa Nero" schnellstmöglich ablegt. Andernfalls müsste sie um die Insel gefahren werden, um Schäden durch die drohende Extremwetterlage zu vermeiden.

Für den Käufer ist der Preis ein äußerst guter Deal, sofern er im Besitz der Yacht bleiben darf. Die "Alfa Nero" ist 81 Meter lang und wurde vor etwa zehn Jahren für 115 Millionen US-Dollar gekauft. Ihr aktueller Wert soll, je nach Zustand, zwischen 80 und 120 Millionen US-Dollar liegen.
