Greece’s largest island, Crete, is a coveted sailing destination, presenting a perfect blend of pristine natural beauty, captivating historical treasures, and vibrant local culture. With Yachting.Rent, you’re invited to explore this Greek gem’s unique allure, sailing the brilliant blue waters of the Mediterranean.
Crete’s advantageous location, with a coastline stretching over 1000 km, offers diverse sailing experiences. From tranquil beaches and secluded bays to bustling harbors, every sailor, novice or seasoned, can find a route that matches their preferences. The island’s climate is another reason for its popularity among sailors – long, sunny summers and mild winters make it an ideal year-round sailing destination.
The island is home to an abundance of beautiful and diverse mooring spots. From the popular marinas of Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos to secluded anchorages in Balos Lagoon and Elounda, Crete offers a plethora of options for an idyllic overnight stay on your yacht.
But sailing in Crete is not only about the sea. The island is rich in history and culture, featuring important archaeological sites like the Palace of Knossos, a testimony to the ancient Minoan civilization. The island’s charming villages and vibrant cities provide an opportunity to experience the Cretan hospitality, savor local cuisine, and participate in traditional festivals.
Crete also boasts an impressive range of natural landscapes. Sailors can enjoy the island’s diverse flora and fauna, hike through its rugged mountains, explore deep gorges, or visit exotic beaches with pink sand and turquoise waters.

What Choose
Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Crete
At Yachting.Rent, we offer an extensive selection of yachts to make your seafaring journey around the beautiful island of Crete a dream come true. One question we often receive is whether to opt for a sailing boat or a catamaran. We believe the decision lies in the kind of experience you seek.
The Classic Sailing Boat Experience For the traditionalists, a sailing boat offers an authentic sailing adventure that connects you with the sea in a profound way. There’s a unique thrill in manipulating the sails and rudder to navigate the waters that motor-powered vessels simply cannot match. Sailing boats are perfect for smaller groups looking for a cozy, intimate setting. They are also often the choice of those looking to test their sailing skills and feel the harmony of working with the winds and the waves.
The Luxury of a Catamaran On the other hand, if your primary concern is comfort and stability, a catamaran would be an ideal choice. With its dual-hull design, a catamaran offers more space, stability, and smooth sailing, making it less likely to rock in choppy waters. The expansive decks of our catamarans provide ample space for sunbathing, dining, and unwinding, making them perfect for larger groups or families.
Why Choose? Experience Both! At Yachting.Rent, we don’t believe in restricting your choices. Depending on the length of your stay, you could opt to experience both vessels, dividing your time between the classic seafaring charm of a sailing boat and the spacious luxury of a catamaran.
Supported by a Dedicated Team Whether you choose a sailing boat or a catamaran, our team at Yachting.Rent is committed to providing you with an unforgettable journey. We offer the option of bareboat charter for experienced sailors, or you can choose to have a professional skipper guide your journey.
Uncover the treasures of Crete, from the sparkling azure waters to the rich, cultural history. Reach out to us at Yachting.Rent, and we’ll help you select the perfect vessel for your Cretan sailing adventure. Let’s set sail for an unforgettable experience!

Tourists reviews
The day was windy which brought very strong seas. The Captain and crew did their best to keep us safe and comfortable; doing their best to provide us the experience that was promised. The trip did not disappoint. Even though the seas were rough, we made it to Dia Island parked in a beautiful bay. We swam for an hour in beautiful blue water. Yummy eats were provided. Along with champagne and drinks! We understand nature cannot be controlled, but the crew still provided a wonderful trip. *On a side note, the crew was very considerate and knowledgeable in ensuring the safety and welfare of their passengers. Due to the choppy waters, passengers were a bit sea sick and the crew were able to get them through it. Can't say enough, how impressed I was with their service!

Tripadvisor
Our group of 6 took the catamaran day trip from Hersonissos to Dia Island last Saturday. It was a perfect way to escape the heat. We had been concerned that the catamaran would be cramped with 20 people but this wasn’t an issue at all. The staff were friendly and efficient and the whole day ran smoothly. We anchored in a perfect cove for a few hours. The water was turquoise and so clear. Plenty of time to swim, snorkel, paddle board etc. Lunch and drinks are included. My only suggestion would be to put bottles of water on the table for guests to help themselves rather than asking the staff all the time.

The organization, food and staff were excellent. The view was amazing. Perhaps a little more interaction with the staff would have been appreciated, I think that might come with age as most were fairly young and distracted by the cute girls who seemed to be part of the crew.

Had a great time on this excursion! We met at the cafe and got checked in then headed to the catamaran and had coffee and pastries and began our sail. On the way out we learned some interesting facts and drank white wine and had snacks. Once we arrived to the spot to snorkel, the water was so clear and beautiful. After swimming, we ate an amazing lunch that was prepared on the catamaran and then sailed back. Overall, the staff was great and we had a fun time with the other guests.

The reason we travel is an experience like this. Sleek, comfortable and well-equipped catamaran, first rate crew who really care about your enjoyment, nice dinner (especially the mussels) and lovely Mirabella Bay coastline. Had quite a bit of difficulty finding the boat, but all was forgiven after the ocean swim and camaraderie among people from such a variety of countries.

What a brilliant day!! George the Skipper and Joanna, who prepared the wonderful food, made our day really special. We traveled on this lovely yacht to a tranquil bay where we had loads of time to swim and paddle board. We were then treated to a fantastic lunch with fresh fish and delicious salads and plenty of alcohol! What an unbelievable day, thank you both so much!

This was a 10/10 and would highly recommend booking with them. It was 11 of us in a group and holds 20 people so it felt like a private trip. The crew were lovely, very polite and attentive. They had all kinds of things like paddle boards, floaters, snorkelling. Jumping off the boat was so fun and we had enough time to have fun and do whatever we want to do. For the non swimmers who want to go into the ocean they give noodles which I have never seen and many non swimmers were very happy instead of wearing life jackets. The lunch was delicious! And the starters when getting onto the boat was so good! We also forgot our drone batteries and were stressing, when we called in the morning they had found it and left it aside for us to pick up. I booked Daneri Yachts for my husbands birthday . The Crew was great, welcoming, funny, and laid back , (I have had a bad experience in the past in France) however this was such a big difference and we actually really enjoyed our time . I loved that the trip left at 9:30 and we were back around 2:30 it gave us still so much time to use our day . What I love about this cruise was that your not just getting the sailing but they welcomed us with freshly cut cheeses, dips, and crackers . While they let us off the boat to swim they prepared a whole hot lunch . I was shocked when i saw them taking out fresh fish from the oven . They had two different salads and some other sides . But I was overall thankful the for the homecooked fresh meal . They also ended it with desserts and fresh cut fruit . it was just overall a pleasant experience . I highly recommend booking this .

The swimming stop was great too, just a gorgeous evening. The right amount of people were onboard too, they didn’t pack people in, it was comfortable. I would just say don’t rely on the snacks, as we were told we could go for a swim and while we were off the boat the food was served and everything was gone, we had one breadstick each 🤣 Not really great for the cost of the activity. There was one lady who was lovely but the rest of the staff seemed like they didn't want to be there. The stop we made was in very deep water with poor visibility so snorkelling was pointless and it was just off a beach that had a motorway over the top of it so that wasn't very appealing. It would have been nicer if there were more stops in nicer places! The food was really good and cooked fresh. I'm glad we went but wouldn't go back Read more Written September 24, 2023

When we arrived the captain asked how’s your day “I said a little frustrating trying to find the ship” his response was very aggressive, rude and shouted that it’s not his fault as he had, had more than enough of complaints over the season on the same issue this was uncalled for and his tone spoilt the start After a few hours my son in-law went to get my wife a wine and he told him he could drink water instead how rude is that !!! Food was fantastic ship clean and tidy plenty of space to sit in the shade or sunbathe Swimming destination was really good crystal clear water. Read more Written September 21, 2023

We liked the fact that it was a small boat which meant only a small group of people. This trip did not disappoint, from the moment we arrived at the harbour meeting point to when we disembarked. We had briefings from the captain and a wonderful, freshly cooked meal by the chef. The crew were so friendly. We paid approx. £100pp which I would say is slight over priced compared to similar trips we have done but they we in different countries so can’t really compare this. Afterwards I was thinking around the £70 would have been a fair price point. Unfortunately we chose a very windy day to go which meant it was a bit choppy and on the way back quite cold! Food was nice however probably not enough for the amount of people that were on board. Discover Crete, one of Greece's greatest pearls
Crete is the cradle of the Minoan civilization, whose heart and most important place in terms of archaeological wealth is Knossos. It is worth taking a walk around the city of Heraklion, which is the largest urban center on the island. We recommend a stroll through the charming and typical Cretan streets. You can also visit the monuments from the time of the Venetian occupation, such as the Loggia and the old harbor with the famous fortress of Koules.
What places should I visit in Crete?
In the west of the island, lies the charming town of Chania. Although it was partially destroyed by bombing during World War II, it still attracts crowds of tourists every year with its beauty. Especially the district of Splantzia, which preserves to this day the ancient atmosphere and spirit of Crete's history, cannot be neglected on your itinerary. From the port of Souda you can leave in a speedboat to the beautiful beach of Stavros or to Réthymnon.
Agios Nikolaos
On the east of the island is the town of Agios Nikolaos, famous for its numerous beaches. In the center of the town is the curious Vulisméni Lake, known as "bottomless". Of course, this is just a name, but a justified one: the bottom is 64 meters deep. The main marina is located to the south of the city and from there, you can take a nice boat ride to the island of Agioi Pantes.
The largest and most important city of Crete, its historical capital, named after the hero Hercules (Heraklion). During your cruise to Crete, don't hesitate to make a stop ashore to see the main monuments:
- The Knossos Palace.
- The Fountain of Morosini
- The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum
- The Archaeological Museum
- The Orthodox Church of St. Titus
- The Fortress of Koules
There are also many picturesque beaches in Heraklion. Many tourists come here exclusively to visit them, as their diversity allows everyone to find a quiet place to relax with the kids, as well as to spend time relaxing and playing water sports.
Bay of Balos
This is one of the most beautiful places in both Crete and all of Greece, this cove is called a Cretan paradise for a reason! White sand with a slightly pinkish tinge, unbelievable crystal blue sea... sounds incredible, doesn't it? Consider this bay a must-see on your itinerary, because you can't miss it when you travel to Crete! The easiest way to reach it is by boat, from the port of Kissamos.
What else can you do in Crete? Visit the deserted beach of Glyka Nera, swim at the meeting of the three Mediterranean seas, dive directly from your own boat, and discover the wonderful underwater world!
By renting a sailboat or catamaran, you can sail from east to west on a real cruise, enjoying the magnificent landscapes of Crete. Use your boat rental in Crete to reach the island of Santorini, famous for its beautiful architecture and white houses with blue roofs. Who knows, maybe even Athens or the beautiful cities on the Turkish coast such as Antalya, Bodrum or Marmaris will also catch your eye, and a trip there will not take more than a few days.

Humans have already settled in Crete since prehistoric times.
One of the most important historical sites to visit in Crete is Knossos palace which was built in the Bronze Age. Knossos is generally referred to as the oldest city in Europe. Unlike other ruins you might have seen before, the Knossos palace is painted in lots of bright colours that still shine strong nowadays.
Discover mystical Crete
Like many other Greek islands, there are many myths surrounding the island of Crete. Zeus is one of the Greek gods who was protecting the island due to it being his birthplace. However, the nearby islet of Paximadia is considered to be the birthplace of Artemis and Apollo, bringing extra meaning to the island of Crete.
Sailing conditions in Crete
As Crete is an island in the Mediterranean, it is generally blessed with warm weather and sunny days all year round. August is the warmest and most popular month to visit the island. Tourists from the Greek mainland as well as from all over the world love coming here to enjoy Greek food, sunny days by the beach and swimming in the beautiful turquoise waters. The rocky formations make it a unique experience to sail around the island. Sailing season starts in April and generally lasts well into November.
The wind conditions in this part of the Mediterranean are ideal for a sailing vacation. Sail with the winds and discover what the island has to offer.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Crete?
It all depends on the type of sailing holiday you would like to experience in Crete. Choose your boat according to the activities you have planned. If you want to discover hidden beaches and bays, you would rent a different type of boat than the one you would choose if you just want to sail across the Mediterranean to feel the wind on your skin.
Rent a catamaran in Crete
Pros of renting a catamaran in Crete
Renting a catamaran in Crete comes with many advantages, including the fact that they are equipped with shallow drafts. This makes them the perfect choice for sailing in shallow waters and closer to the shore in order to reach the most stunning remote beaches.
Another major advantage of renting a catamaran is the fact that they are equipped with both a sail and an engine. This means that you can set sail when the wind is going strong and you can sail naturally, but you also have a plan B in store and can drive along the coast with the engine rather than having to wait for the wind to pick up again when it suddenly stops blowing. You get the best of both worlds!
The fact that catamarans stand on two hulls gives them a lot more stability than other types of boats have. When the winds get a little stronger, you might not feel it as much as on other types of boats, but you might hear the water hitting the bottom of the boat which might cause some annoyance.
A very popular catamaran to rent in Crete is Catamaran Lagoon 400 which is available in the marina of Heraklion . Up to 10 people can sleep on board and a crew is included when renting this boat. Snorkelling and fishing equipment can be found on board for some extra fun activities while sailing around Crete. Head to Kolokytha Beach for a fun snorkelling experience away from the crowds.
Cons of renting a catamaran in Crete
One of the downsides of catamarans can be the fact that they are more spacious than other types of boats. While it is certainly a positive aspect of catamarans, it might cause some issues when trying to find a mooring spot at a marina - especially in the busy summer months. You might not be able to fit your boat in the marinas and have to search for a spot to anchor in a quiet bay.

Rent a sailboat in Crete

One of the most popular sailboats to rent in Crete is Sailboat Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42I . Up to 7 people fit on board this boat and you can rent it with or without a captain. Keep in mind that it will be more expensive if you hire a captain. The interior is already screaming ‘sailing vacation’. When is your turn?
Cons of renting a sailboat in Crete
One of the downsides of renting a sailboat in Crete is the fact that they are only running on wind. If the wind should suddenly stop blowing, you might get stuck in the middle of the sea and have to wait for the wind to pick up again in order to move forward. This can be a little frustrating.
Another downside of renting a sailboat is the fact that they usually don’t leave a lot of space for sunbathing on deck. Most of the space is necessary to store all the equipment that is needed in order to sail properly and safely.
Rent a speedboat in Crete

One of the advantages of renting a speedboat in Crete is that speedboats are generally smaller than other types of boats, making them much easier to operate. They are also very easy to operate - even if you are a novice sailor.
Another great thing about speedboats is, as the name suggests, their speed. You can get from A to B in a very short period of time. This makes them the perfect boats to stop by all the spots you want to discover in a short amount of time.
Cons of renting a speedboat in Crete
One of the disadvantages of renting a speedboat in Crete is the fact that they are generally not well-equipped for longer periods of time on the water. It can be fine for a couple days, but not more than that.
Another downside is the fact that they run on fuel. This means that you always have to ensure that they are refueled when leaving the marinas.
Rent a speedboat in Corsica
Rent a motorboat in Crete
Pros of renting a motorboat in Crete

Another advantage of chartering a motorboat is the fact that they have a shallow draft. This makes them the perfect boats to sail close to the shore and stop by the most beautiful hidden beaches. Also, unlike sailboats, motorboats don’t require you to store a lot of equipment necessary for sailing on deck. This means that you get to have more space on deck and get to soak up the sun without lying next to necessary sailing equipment. It’s perfect for a relaxing boat holiday in Crete.
One of the most popular motorboats to rent in Crete is Motorboat Catcruiser 45 which is offering free all-inclusive drinks as well as a crew who is accompanying you for the whole trip. Sailing routes in Crete
One of the most popular sailing routes in the Mediterranean is only starting in Crete and taking you to some of the other beautiful Greek islands. You start your sailing adventure in Chania and sail all the way to Santorini.
Day 1 - Sail from Chania, Crete to Milos which can take between 4 and 5 hours depending on the wind conditions, the conditions at sea, etc. It is a wonderful route to discover the Mediterranean sea. In Milos you have to go and see Sarakiniko Beach , a stunning beach made of volcanic rock that is shining white.
Day 2 - Sail from Milos to Sifnos which will only take you about an hour. In Sifnos you can see some of the most beautiful Christian buildings, including the Chrisopigi Monastery on the edge of a cliff.
Day 3 - Sail from Sifnos to Paros . This trip can take you between one and three hours, depending on the conditions at sea and the type of boat you’ve chartered in Crete. In Paros you should visit Paros Park , a breathtaking natural park with stunning sea views, amazing trails to walk along the Northern part of the island and some fantastic beaches to stop by and take a quick swim to cool down.
Day 4 - Sail from Paros to Naxos which is going to take you around half an hour or an hour. It all depends on the type of boat you’re sailing on and the wind and sea conditions. In Naxos you should get your history fix and visit the Temple of Apollo in Portara and the Temple of Demeter . The Faragi Kouros , a huge statue, is also worth a visit.
Day 5 - Sail from Naxos to Ios . This trip can take you 30 minutes or 2 hours, depending on the weather conditions and the capabilities of your boat rental. Ios is not just famous for its stunning beaches like Magganari Beach or Kolitsani , but also as the resting place of Homer. You can visit the Tomb of Homer and get to enjoy the stunning sea views while there.
Day 6 - Sail from Ios to Folegandros , which is most famous for its fascinating rock formations and cliffs. The trip will take you around 1 or 2 hours. Enjoy the views while sailing before visiting some interesting sites like the Church of Panagia or the Chrissospilia Cave .
Day 7 - Sail from Folegandros to Santorini . This is going to take you between 1 or 3 hours depending on your boat and the weather conditions. Santorini is obviously most famous for its white houses and blue rooftops, but there is much more to see. Ancient Thera is one of the most interesting historical sites on the island.
Day 8 - Sail from Santorini back to Crete . This can take you between 2 and 6 hours. If you want to sail for just 7 days, you can also head back to Crete from Folegandros. However, this is going to take you much longer! Keep in mind that you might want to stop along the way.
