What It's Like On Board Evrima, The Ritz-Carlton's First Ship

What to expect on The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's Evrima, a 149-suite ship with five restaurants, six lounges, and plenty of over-the-top hotel amenities.

yacht at sea

Maya Kachroo-Levine / Travel + Leisure

“The great thing about yachting is you’re in complete control — whether you’re at anchor or at a dock,” said Doug Prothero, founder of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection . “We have the ability to make something up as we go along — and that is the yachting lifestyle."

We were drinking iced tea at the Marina, an indoor-outdoor venue hovering 10 feet above the water on the third deck of the Evrima . The yacht, named for the Greek word for “discovery,” was anchored in Alcúdia Bay, just off the northeastern coast of Mallorca, Spain. Stairs led down to a platform from which guests could dive directly into the sea. Prothero called the area, lined with sun loungers, “the beach.”

Maya Kachroo-Levine / Travel + Leisure

Prothero explained how The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection structures itineraries aboard the Evrima . Each all-inclusive sailing (with options for five-, seven-, nine-, 10-, 11-, and 12-night journeys) spends at least two days at anchor, affording guests the choice to stay lounging at sea or take a small tender boat to the nearest port (in this case, Alcúdia, Spain, where some visited the Old Town and one group of golfers even went ashore for a 7 a.m. tee time).

“We’re moving this resort,” Prothero said. “There’s never going to be a Ritz-Carlton in this place.” But there is right now.

The Inaugural Sailing

We’d left Barcelona Cruise Port the night before, on October 15, 2022, for Evrima’ s long-anticipated inaugural journey . We set sail with 220 guests, a handful of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection corporate team members, 245 Ritz-Carlton ladies and gentlemen (as the brand calls those working on board), 1,800 bottles of Moët & Chandon, and one Travel + Leisure editor (me).

Some guests had been waiting three years for this moment, having booked the original inaugural sailing, set for February 5, 2020. It was rescheduled eight times — the result of a shipyard bankruptcy, the COVID-19 pandemic, and myriad supply chain delays. And yes, I did meet travelers who had rescheduled every time, one of whom showed me eight confirmation emails over martinis at the Observation Lounge on deck 10.

Christopher Cypert / Courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton

On the other hand, many passengers I met had no idea there were delays — including honeymooners who had booked this trip in January 2022 because it departed exactly a week after their wedding; a solo traveler in her 30s who I joined on a four-hour shore excursion filled with tapas and insights into the Gothic architecture of Palma, Mallorca; and a woman whose husband had surprised her with a 50th-birthday celebration aboard The Ritz-Carlton yacht she kept sending him articles about.

Once the ship sailed from Barcelona , no one was thinking about the ups and downs that preceded our voyage or how we got there. We were focused on where we were going. And it was Saturday night on Evrima .

Bars and Restaurants

I was off to The Evrima Room, the fourth-deck main dining room serving three meals a day. I ordered the charred octopus (all the fish and seafood on board are sourced locally from ports every three days), heirloom tomato risotto, and a lemon tart decked out with mini meringues and sugar-spun ornamentation.

There are four other dining venues (plus 24/7 in-room dining) on the 623-foot-long yacht: The Pool House, on the fifth deck, next to the infinity-edge pool; S.E.A., which stands for Sven Elverfeld Afloat, modeled after the chef’s Michelin three-starred restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg, Germany, on deck six; Talaat Nam, an indoor-outdoor Southeast Asian spot designed to physically wrap around S.E.A.; and open-air Mediterranean restaurant Mistral on deck eight. I polled about 20 ladies and gentlemen on their favorite restaurant, and Mistral was the overwhelming favorite. The focal point of Mistral is the pool in the middle of the venue — one of two pools on board — “Plus the sea,” Prothero quipped, “that’s the biggest pool."

All food and beverages are included in the sail price, save the curated 120-bottle reserve wine list, a collection of high-end spirits, and the seven-course tasting menu at S.E.A., which starts at $285 with wine pairings.

Amenities and Entertainment

I left The Evrima Room by 10:30 p.m. to see where people were congregating, first dropping by the fourth-deck Living Room, where a jazz trio was warming up.

There are six musicians on board, including a DJ, as well as local artists who continually rotate in. They play in different configurations, including as a pop group and a jazz trio. Guitarist Craig Stuart told me most had never met before coming together in July in Santander, Spain, where the ship was being finished, to spend the month rehearsing together.

With six lounges on board, nearly every space felt lively, but none too crowded. From The Living Room, we migrated to deck 10 where the cozy, 404-square-foot Humidor, outfitted with a The Macallan cart, Davidoff cigars, and an array of reserve-list whiskies, was — sorry, there’s no other way to say it — poppin’ off.

The Observation Lounge had similar energy, and folks gathered around as the bartender, OJ, who garnered a band of loyal followers during our time on Evrima, strained my Negroni into a coupe, enclosed it in a glass covering, and pumped in smoke, purely for the spectacle — and to add a smoky je ne sais quoi to my nightcap.

Even the ninth-deck Spa Terrace (one of Prothero’s favorite spots because “when we’re moving, you can see the front of the ship, so the view is amazing”) had a small crowd in the whirlpool. I didn’t linger on the Spa Terrace, but came back the next morning for a deep-tissue massage in one of the five treatment rooms and a sumptuous nap in the indoor-outdoor relaxation area.

The Staterooms

I ended my night on my private balcony wrapped in a Frette robe, transfixed by the waves of the Balearic Sea rhythmically foaming and curling against the ship. There was plenty of space inside my 429-square-foot Signature Suite to sprawl — a full tub and double vanity in the bathroom, a sitting area, a dining table, and a king-size bed.

Room options range from the entry-level Terrace Suites to the 1,000-square-foot Owner’s Suite, with a private whirlpool. Each of the 149 guest rooms has its own balcony. While the two two-story Lofts and their vast 81-square-foot terraces were the top-tier offering on the inaugural sailing, the two Owner's Suites and four View Suites have since been completed, and are now the swankiest rooms on the yacht.

Francisco Martinez / Courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton

A personal concierge is assigned to each suite, though with schedules printed daily (and posted on The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection app) detailing onboard happenings, like sunset stretch and meditation on deck nine, and personalized itineraries, I rarely reached out to mine.

An Impeccable Team

As I met concierges, chefs, the two-person wine team (pro tip: always befriend the sommeliers), and shore excursion pros, I was impressed by their expertise. Of the 245 staff members on board, about half come from the world of luxury hotels and half from the world of high-end cruising. That’s how you bring a hotel concept to sea.

I talked luxury hotel shop with Theo Lakkas, a food-and-beverage lead who opened Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection , in Budapest. Executive chef John Suley came from Stephen Starr’s team and very seamlessly worked a “Wolf of Wall Street” quote into conversation. I learned about head sommelier Sebastian Pacheco’s vision for the reserve wine list — he wanted to pick up a highly sought-after case from every port city to bolster the already-expansive selection. He came from Francis Ford Coppola’s Inglenook in Rutherford, California, and was working there the last time I visited the Napa Valley winery in 2019.

Sotheby’s-educated art concierge Rafaella Vitale, from the London art advisory world, gushed about the private tours she was planning to do with guests and the mini-auctions she’d curate for each sailing. I watched as Pacheco and Vitale ping-ponged ideas off each other for art-and-wine events they could put on during an upcoming transatlantic crossing, all while sipping Ruinart sparkling rosé from the bottle the three of us were sharing. That particular transatlantic voyage was slated to leave from Lisbon after Evrima’s christening on November 5, sail to Tenerife, Spain, spend seven days at sea, and wind up in Bridgetown, Barbados. Vitale planned to have the Bahamian artist behind the ship's upcoming rotating art exhibit, Lynn Parotti , on board for the crossing and Caribbean sailings.

Guest Rewards

As if it weren’t already apparent that this vessel is, in fact, a luxury hotel at sea by the classic light-blue Ritz-Carlton key cards, Frette robes, Diptyque bath products, and signature oils in the spa used at each of the 108 Ritz-Carlton hotels worldwide, the clearest sign came on our second evening. The ship hosted the “first-ever Marriott Bonvoy member reception at sea,” according to Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano, who Zoomed in for the occasion.

The Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program functions for The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection much in the the same way it would on dry land: Guests can earn five points per dollar spent on their cruise fare; they can redeem points to reduce the cost of their sailing, with some limitations (an initial redemption of 180,000 points saves you $1,000, and you may then continue to redeem at a clip of 90,000 points for each $500 of savings).

Members will also earn one Elite Night Credit per night (which counts toward Marriott Bonvoy elite status ) and can enjoy a private members-only reception. The higher your status, the more perks you'll have access to, including priority boarding and departure, complimentary laundry services during your cruise, and early access to reservations at S.E.A., among others (depending on your level of status).

Where Evrima Sails — and New Ships on the Horizon

Evrima continued sailing the Mediterranean until the aforementioned transatlantic crossing, after which the yacht spent five months in the Caribbean, visiting idyllic ports of call in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Barbados, and Turks and Caicos, among other islands, before heading back across the Atlantic to the Mediterranean in mid-April 2023. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection has two more vessels in the works: Ilma , coming in 2024, and Luminara , coming in 2025, each with a 456-passenger capacity.  While The Ritz-Carlton is now the first luxury hotel brand at sea on this scale, Four Seasons and Aman will soon launch ships of a similar size. In 2022, Four Seasons announced a 679-foot, 95-cabin yacht , designed by the same company that worked on the Evrima , Tillberg Design of Sweden , coming in late 2025. Like Evrima , it will summer on the Mediterranean and winter in the Caribbean. Aman’s 50-suite yacht, Project Sama , also slated for a 2025 delivery, is in partnership with Cruise Saudi and will explore the Middle East.

Christopher Cypert / Courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton

I disembarked on Mallorca halfway through the seven-night inaugural sailing, which concluded in Nice, France, on October 22, 2022. When Evrima anchored off the coast of St. Tropez, the Marina, open only when the ship is at anchor, unfolded with floating platforms and a bevy of water toys, like paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, and snorkeling accoutrements.

From my layover in London, I texted my marketing contact for pictures of Evrima anchored off St. Tropez (it’s called yacht FOMO, OK?). I could just picture what my morning would look like on board: espresso on my balcony, maybe a mimosa at the Marina, a soak in the ninth-deck whirlpool. For the afternoon, I’d move slowly, go ashore when I wanted, if I wanted, probably make it up as I went along. I hear that’s what the yachting lifestyle is all about.

Redefining luxury cruising at Four Seasons Yachts

Thatcher Brown of Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings explains how Four Seasons Yachts will exceed expectations when its first yacht debuts in January 2026

Redefining luxury cruising at Four Seasons Yachts

By Rebecca Gibson | 10 April 2024

When Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis bought a Canadian frigate in 1954, he quickly transformed the vessel into the most luxurious private yacht of its time, introducing multiple design innovations and boutique interiors that attracted many of the world’s leading politicians and Hollywood stars. More recently, the vessel has provided inspiration for luxury hotel and hospitality brand Four Seasons, which will be debuting its first yacht in January 2026.

“We’re taking inspiration from the innovations of the past and reinterpreting them in a way that will resonate well with our contemporary guests to create an unprecedented experiential yachting offering,” says Thatcher Brown, chief operating officer and head of joint operations at luxury shipping specialist Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings, the joint owner/operator of the Four Seasons Yachts brand.

Four Seasons Yachts has invested billions to develop its first vessel, which is being constructed by Fincantieri in Italy. The vessel will feature an exterior and all-suite accommodation designed by the lead architect Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) and public spaces created by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio. Prosper Assouline, who is renowned for his luxury fashion and art publications, is providing the overall creative direction for the ship.

“Each partner brings unparalleled knowledge, experience and expertise to the project and together, we’re creating a a passenger vessel that is unlike any other the industry has ever seen,” says Brown. “TDoS and Brudnizki both have vast experience in pushing design boundaries to develop luxury interiors that leave a lasting impression, while Prosper Assouline epitomises uncompromising quality. Meanwhile, Fincantieri is completing every task to the highest possible standard during the build phase. Everywhere they look, guests will see examples of exquisite craftsmanship, meticulous attention to detail and incredible design elements.”

Four Seasons Yachts and Fincantieri

Impressive innovations

Spanning 14 decks, Four Seasons Yachts’ 207-metre-long ship will boast restaurants, lounges, bars, a full-service spa, a salon and a canoe-shaped deck with a 20-metre saltwater pool. “The pool is larger than on any other vessel this size and it has a hydraulic floor that can be raised to create a stage for events or entertainment,” says Brown. “It was inspired by the movable pool floor on Christina O.”

In addition, the vessel will feature 95 custom-built suites, all with their own expansive private outdoor terraces and sliding soundproofed walls to enable them to be reconfigured in multiple ways.

“We’ll be able to offer guests some of the largest continuously connected living spaces at sea,” says Brown. “The entire vessel is designed to offer guests maximum choice and flexibility over how they want to spend their time onboard. It will have multiple spaces designed to encourage guests to come together and socialise, but there will also be plenty of private and public areas where they can quietly relax. The suites, for example, have been crafted in such a way that guests will feel like they’re sailing on their own private yacht.”

The highlight of the accommodation area will be the four-level Funnel Suite, which will offer more than 9,500 square feet of combined indoor and outdoor living space. Notable amenities will include a private kitchen, wading pool, outside terrace and a dedicated spa area.

“The Funnel Suite will be one of the most beautiful and luxurious spaces on the vessel,” says Brown. “It will offer 280-degree panoramic views via floor-to-ceiling, wraparound curved glass windows made of the largest contiguous piece of glass at sea. This piece of glass cost $4.5 million, which gives you an insight into just how much money Four Seasons Yachts is investing to deliver innovative one-of-a-kind experiences!”

Another notable design feature is the port-to-starboard transversal ‘dual marina’. “It will have large platforms and tiered lounging decks along both sides of the vessel to connect the guests to the water,” says Brown. “Guests will be able to dive directly into the ocean or embark on a water sports adventure straight from the deck, offering them a bespoke yacht-style experience. We’ll offer equipment for activities such as sailing, paddle-boarding, and wind surfing, and guests will be able to rent custom-built sea limousines and beach landers for shore transfers or coastal tours. Inside, the marina will also feature an elegant lounge area with a bar.”

Four Seasons Yachts has also invested in various technologies and solutions to ensure the vessel meets – and where possible exceeds – the marine industry’s rigorous environmental regulations.

“We’ve explored the most sustainable options for everything from waste and energy management to hull coatings, recycling, materials for the interior spaces, and ways to anchor the yacht in marinas without damaging the ocean floor,” says Brown. “We are investigating and accessing green energy fuels and zero-emission energy sources as part of our approach.

Guest-centric hospitality

Four Seasons Yachts aims to recreate Four Seasons’ renowned hospitality onboard the vessel. “The same incredible chefs that create the innovative, high-end culinary experiences for the brand’s land-based resorts are developing them for this vessel too,” says Brown. “Guests will be able to dress up for meals in a formal restaurant setting, enjoy causal al fresco lunches and dinners, or eat privately in the comfort of their own suite. They will be guaranteed exceptional food and beverages, as well as impeccable personalised service.”

Guests can can expect to enjoy similarly exclusive experiences when they visit destinations too.

“Our first yacht will debut with itineraries to boutique Caribbean destinations before repositioning to the Mediterranean to cruise iconic yachting locales, such as the Adriatic coast, the Greek Isles and the French and Italian Rivieras,” says Brown. “However, many of our guests will be very well-travelled and accustomed to visiting such destinations, so they will have very high expectations when it comes to itineraries and onshore experiences. Seasoned travellers want to be the first to discover a new place or try an exclusive experience, so we’re planning personalised non-traditional onshore experiences that uncover the hidden gems in each destination.”

Exclusive explorations

Four Seasons’ long-standing guests and travel partners were the first to receive personal invites to sail on the yacht during its maiden season, while other luxury travel enthusiasts are invited to learn more about the product and be placed on a waitlist.

“We want to take care of those individuals who have been committed to Four Seasons and central to the brand’s soaring success over the years, so we’re ensuring they are the first onboard our yacht,” explains Brown. “We’ve already seen significant interest from these guests, many of whom are excited to see how we’re going to bring the Four Seasons experiences they know and love to sea. Our dedicated team of personal yacht consultants will handle every aspect of their booking to ensure the experience is smooth and seamless.”

As the vessel’s launch date draws nearer, Brown and the wider team are excited to reveal the many Four Seasons Yachts stories as the ship is being meticulously bult at Fincantieri’s Ancona, Italy shipyard.

“We’re building a stunning seafaring venture that will be enjoyed as a yacht experience rather than a cruise experience,” says Brown. “We only have one chance to make an amazing first impression and I’m confident Four Seasons Yachts will do just that.”

A Preview of Four Seasons' New Yacht-and Where It Will Sail

F our Seasons has unveiled initial renderings, inaugural itineraries, and pricing for its first yacht, which promises to raise the bar on small-ship cruising.

The luxury hotel company said the first ship to launch under the new Four Seasons Yacht brand will begin sailing the Caribbean in January 2026, with seven-night itineraries that will include stops in yachting destinations like St. Bart's, Nevis, the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Curaçao, and Aruba.

In March, the yacht will head to the Mediterranean with sailings that will include Croatia, Gibraltar, Montenegro, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Türkiye, and the Greek Isles. Ports of call in Greece will include favorites like Santorini as well as lesser-known islands like Ios and Milos.

During its first year, the yacht will sail to more than 130 destinations across 30 countries and territories. The itineraries will be crafted to be flexible, with the ability to combine them with land options at Four Seasons hotels and resorts.

Onboard, staterooms are being designed to feel more like hotel rooms than cruise ship cabins. Four Seasons said the yacht will have 50 percent more space per passenger than its competitors, which include Ritz-Carlton, the first luxury hotel company to launch its own yacht in 2022. Aman is also getting into the luxury yachting game , with plans to start sailing in 2026.

The 95 cabins on the Four Seasons yacht, which will be able to accommodate up to 222 passengers, range in size from 500 to 9,986 square feet. The vessel's seven largest signature suites will have either two or three bedrooms, separate living rooms, indoor and outdoor dining spaces, splash pools, outdoor showers, and the option to connect to additional suites.

All the cabins will have floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies.

For families and groups traveling together, the ship will also offer more than 100 options for connecting cabins.

The largest suite onboard, the Funnel Suite, will feature four levels of living space and floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows. The most versatile will be the Loft Suite, which will be able to accommodate up to 20 people by connecting with seven additional suites.

Prices for the initial sailings range from around $20,000 for the smallest cabins to just under $200,000 for the Funnel Suite.

The yacht will have 11 dining venues, spa and wellness offerings, a water sports deck, and a large pool (65 feet long and 18 feet wide).

The interior was designed by Tillberg Design of Sweden to reflect the same atmosphere guests experience at a Four Seasons hotel or resort, said Fredrik Johannson, partner and executive director of Tillberg Design.

Pricing is also more like that of a hotel than a traditional cruise ship, with rates based on the cabin, not the number of people in it. And unlike most cruises, rates do not include lunch or dinner, except for children under 12. Nor do they include cocktails, wine, and excursions.

And, of course, the new yacht product will boast Four Seasons' renowned service standards, with a one-to-one staff to guest ratio.

The company said it will release more details and new itineraries in the coming months. Additionally, it expects to launch a second yacht at the end of 2026.

The inaugural season of Four Seasons Yachts will whisk passengers off to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Satellite communication: how to stay connected at sea

  • Toby Hodges
  • June 14, 2022

How do you choose which satellite communication device to use for ocean sailing? By learning from others! Toby Hodges crunches the data from 216 skippers on the latest Atlantic rally for cruisers

yacht at sea

Our desire for almost constant communication and messaging, even when onboard, and our reliance on the internet continues to soar. Technology and the ability to stay in touch has allowed many sailors to take their work with them afloat and go ocean sailing while still employed or running a business. (That said, for many of us the joy of losing signal and truly switching off remains a key lure of sailing offshore!).

Indeed, an increasing number of cruisers make a living from showcasing their lifestyle afloat in vlog-style videos and social media posts. And for that you need high speed internet through wifi or 4G/cellular networks.

If you’re thinking of going further afield, to cross an ocean you’ll need longer range communication devices to remain just an email or phone call away.

Equally your needs should/will be paired down, probably to the odd email or weather forecast while on passage. However, balancing just what you need or want and how much you’re willing to spend to attain that is not as straightforward as you might think.

To help understand and decide on options, we sought the feedback of the 216 skippers who took part in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) last year. We also spoke with industry experts about the current options for those wanting to buy or upgrade satellite communications.

If you’re looking for a guide for what’s available on the market right now, don’t miss our guide to the best satellite phones for sailors.

Speccing up

ARC organisers, the World Cruising Club (WCC), insist that all yachts sailing in their transocean rallies must carry long-range communication equipment. Yachting World has partnered with WCC for the last two decades to issue ARC participants with our ’Great Atlantic Gear Survey’. The 216 skippers of the combined ARC 2021 crossings shared their communications setups, while 70 respondents gave us feedback on 30 detailed questions all about their satellite devices, costs, airtime, apps etc…

From former ARC surveys we know the majority regularly choose Iridium as it has a full, intelligible range of options and is the only brand with full global coverage. But it’s not just about picking the satellite provider. Selecting which type of hardware suits your needs (handheld or fixed with separate antenna), what airtime package, whether you want a router and perhaps a dedicated marine service for setup, email compression, support, and weather forecasting, is all budget relevant and should be a factor in your decisions.

The pace of satellite communication technology is slow, nevertheless these are still phones we’re talking about here, so people always want the latest!

A full 90% of our survey respondents, for example, only had their data comms equipment installed since 2019 and many were still debugging their systems come the Las Palmas start.

Iridium’s new Certus system has been in the pipeline for some years now and there were a few yachts which carried its higher-end 700 system last year. The more compact and economic 200 and 100 systems launched last summer, though, and will doubtless be in demand for those crossing this year and in the near future.

yacht at sea

A simple handheld is typically the slowest yet most intuitive of satcomm options. Photo: Tor Johnson

Basic / handset satellite communication options

The choice at the most affordable end of the scale is to go for a portable or handheld style satphone, a compact unit with its own aerial, such as Inmarsat’s Isatphone or Iridium’s 9555 or 9575. The latter were carried by 15 of our 70 skippers.

Other than economy, the benefit of a handheld device with a keypad is arguably the ability to dial a number easily when in trouble and take it with you in a grab bag.

Walkabout , an Oceanis 45, has a second-hand 9555 (€800 from MailASail). “It worked okay but we found that text messages often got chopped off,” says Andrew Roantree. “Texting on an Iridium sat phone is really useful – but very painful to do!” he warns.

By far the most popular option carried last ARC was the Iridium GO (chosen by 47 out of 70 skippers).

A relatively economical portable device, this essentially has the same internal parts as Iridium’s handsets but without the numeric keypad. Instead they offer an easy way to create a wifi hub at sea for using mobile devices.

GO has been marketed at attractive prices in recent years, particularly through PredictWind. This, together with an original promise of ‘unlimited data’ for around US$125 per month made it appealing, although it is speed capped at the industry standard of 2.4kbps.

yacht at sea

Weather forecasting and routing is a prime use of satcomms. Photo: TimBisMedia

This means it’s as slow as a handheld, or less than 5% of the speed of 1990s dial-up internet! In practice, it’s enough to receive email and the odd GRIB file but can’t do chat apps. It needs a paired mobile phone to make voice calls and only certain apps work with it.

The majority of the 2021 ARC fleet were content with this though, and said they wouldn’t change their GO setup if doing it again.

There were many comments on data connection being slow and dropping off, but there was also a general assumption and acknowledgement that they knew that would probably be the case.

Make mine GO

Coco , a Lucia 40 catamaran , used GO with Iridium Mail and PredictWind: “The calls would briefly drop out, but only due to the device being situated inside,” skipper Alfie Moore reports. “It reconnected to the call quickly when signal was reestablished. The app would sometimes glitch, there are a few bugs that need ironing out within the app interface and the Offshore weather app could also do with a few upgrades. But in general it was a fantastic device and certainly helped us in the situations we were in during the crossing.” An external antenna is one of the only additions he would consider.

Article continues below

Amanaki ’s crew, using the same package, rates it for value for money. “Recommend people buy second-hand units on ebay and the PredictWind packages”. Equally, the Dutch on Hallberg-Rassy 46 Morgane of Sark were very happy with their GO and MailASail app, at a cost of €800 plus €170 per month for unlimited data and 150 mins.

The Norwegian skipper of Albicilla spent only €700 on his GO and €110 per month on airtime, running Iridium Mail and PredictWind and admitted: “Slow as hell, but works good for what you really need! GRIB + simple email.”

“Well, the speed was as low as expected, but we could live with it,” says Just4fun ’s Thomas Klaus Henkelmann. “Sometimes it took up to 20 dial-in attempts before a connection was made… annoying.”

For others, it tested their patience. “The Iridium GO system is such old technology,” thinks Jim Davies on the First 40 Olympia’s Tigress . “It regularly dropped data calls, especially if run for long periods. The nature of the data service on the Certus system is much more user friendly in a modern world. I have no interest in streaming while at sea, but low text services like WhatsApp (with media downloads turned off) are useful…”

Davies adds: “The Ocens OneMail service is great as it allows you to check your own email address through GO. Also, the PredictWind Offshore app is superb for low data rate GRIB downloads.”

They require patience but the simplicity of a handheld satphone with keypad still appeals. Photo: James Mitchell/WCC

The Valgrens on their Hallberg-Rassy 44 Pleasure found they had to restart their GO on a regular basis (1-2 times a day). “Moving the laptop closer to device improved the connection. An Android mobile seemed to handle the connection in a better way [than using a laptop with Windows].”

Perhaps the best summary of GO, however, was from Bavaria 51 Favorita of Hamble ’s Barnaby Green: “We might trade up to a faster connection but not sure why. GO was sold as a basic entry level with low expectations but I thought it was excellent. Reliable. Portable. Transferable. Affordable. Slow.”

The majority chose the simple option of an Iridium GO and no router, but, as Jeremy Willems on Shadow of Black , one of the smaller yachts, warns: “We did need to have the intervention of the chap from MailASail to get it working properly”. (It should be noted they only purchased their equipment two months before the ARC). MailASail is a marine communication specialist and WCC partner, which has had support staff at Las Palmas for the ARC start for the last two decades.

Over half didn’t use a smart router (41/70), while 21 skippers used MailASail’s RedBox. Data compression tools such as this and the rival Redport can save airtime charges by optimising email and web use, act as a wifi hub and can integrate cellular and wifi extenders.

Mid range satellite communication systems

For those not happy with the ultra slow speeds typically offered by the portable/handset style devices, the mid range choice can offer a step change in speeds (100-200kbps). Until now, this has meant a severe increase in price (from €5,000 for hardware). Again, Certus may now address that.

Some GO users (including Just4Fun and Sundance II ) say they’d prefer a more broadband-based option such as Inmarsat’s Fleet One. Maalu IV , Joia and Tortuga ran this system through a Red Box router (equipment cost €3-5,000) and all commented that it worked ‘perfectly’ or ‘flawlessly’.

yacht at sea

MailASail RedBox PRO Ultra Router

The German crew on CNB 60 Dumia , on the same setup, elaborated further: “We needed special help from MailASail – very professional and it led to a very stable and reliable installation. I followed the advice from WCC regarding installation in due time and we were very happy with this.”

Conversely, the Leests on Sandy Cay felt the expenditure (€5,000 equipment, €2,500 installation, €400 for airtime for crossing) didn’t merit the rewards… “from other sailors I understand that they had the same services with an Iridium GO, which is a lot less expensive to install.”

Airtime & communication apps

Similar to choosing a cellular/mobile phone, it’s not just about the hardware. Selecting the right amount of data and airtime to suit your needs is key.

Again, the most common set up was Iridium GO, Iridium Mail and PredictWind. Thirty skippers purchased airtime through PredictWind, 15 through MailASail.

“Loved PredictWind support and pricing,” says Amanaki ’s Oliver Vauvelle. “No need for an external antenna and reasonable connectivity for the price. Decent voice calls as well”.

LIV agrees: “PredictWind Unlimited for €140 per month was great. Not only did we have unlimited data and 150 voice minutes, we also got a tracking with the Iridium GO sending a GPS position report using SMS (text message) once per hour.” However, Zelda warns: “PredictWind Offshore worked only by email not directly with Iridium GO. Xgate had multiple errors that stopped data transfer”.

Choosing a specialist email provider can also be quite subjective. Emily Morgan used GO to run Airmail (Sailmail) with Iridium apps as backup from Global Telesat Communications. “GRIB files downloaded from Saildocs via Airmail, viewed in OpenCPN. Airmail filters emails so we only download the ones we want (approximately 12 received but eight actually downloaded per day),” says Anna Black.

The Swedes on Arcona 400 LIV found the Iridium Mail app “poor and always had to restart sending large mails with photos.”

Tilda ’s Fabrizio Mancini advises others to download Iridium apps “on more than one smartphone because it allows several users.” The view from Walkabout , meanwhile, was: “MailASail systems and services are great and the service is personal and outstanding”.

When asked for feedback and any technical problems, half the skippers were either very satisfied or didn’t experience issues, other than the occasional dropped call or slow speeds. Sebastian Gylling, sailing his fifth ARC on Eira , doesn’t think you need satcomms, only fitting them “because it was mandatory equipment,” while Scar Cat was left frustrated by recommendations that “were far more expensive than what I found on my own.”

Highly experienced skipper Dan Bower on Skyelark 2 using an Iridium handset, was one of very few RedBox users not to rate the router, finding the data compression inefficient.

Grace LR was also on the same system: “Difficult and long connection times despite having bought everything MailASail advised. I gave up using their weather info and used forecasts only from ARC.”

Lengthy downloads on Free Spirit (also on an Iridium handset and RedBox) led them to use their backup Garmin inReach to keep airtime economical. Rather than download GRIBs they got a weather router to email them forecasts.

Looking ahead

Like all marine equipment, satellite communications need to be reliable, so arguably the most important advice is to buy well in advance and test thoroughly before an ocean departure.

Don’t make decisions based purely on specification (seek a rounded combination of hardware/airtime/data optimisation and support plan if required) and don’t compare to land-based speeds (or expect anything close to them).

We have learned from the survey replies that there has been a shift to smaller/budget focussed setups. The majority of offshore sailors use Iridium and bought/used GO, primarily for its perceived ease and relative economy, and thanks to some good deals last year, particularly through PredictWind.

Hardware is only as good as its internal organs, and in the case of GO these are very similar to Iridium’s handsets as they have the same modules inside, MailASail’s Ed Wildgoose advises.

These are manufactured by various brands, but the supply pipeline started running out last year and satellite communication specialists warn of stock issues with many portable devices this year. As well as a global shortage of electronics, the invasion of Ukraine has also led to a huge demand there for handheld satphones.

A Certus future?

At the same time, we have seen the gradual evolution of a new crop of exciting new mid-range systems. While Inmarsat’s Fleet One is well established now, Iridium has been talking about implementing Certus for years and it was only in the second half of last year that the first yachts started carrying its 100 and 200 systems.

These represent a step change for sailors. The increase in speeds these provide is the equivalent of going from walking pace to flying on a jumbo jet, says Wildgoose .

All this leads to something of a no-brainer for those choosing new satcomms. Both MailASail’s Wildgoose and James Phipps from Global Telesat Communications now strongly advocate the Certus Skylink 100 system in particular as a sort of MkII version of GO. At around twice the hardware cost of GO (£2,000), it offers a global internet hotspot, with 4G, firewall and router built in.

“GO has been the entry level device we’d recommend, as you can send and receive email and the odd GRIB file, but you can’t do Whatsapp,” Phipps explains. “However, I think the Certus Skylink 100 is the way to go and will be a really popular service and hardware to replace GO.”

They think it particularly suits the sailing market as it provides fast enough data speeds for email and chat apps. It’s also more portable than the 200, which is more of a permanent installation, yet half the price and with a fraction of the power consumption (3W versus 25W).

“Personally, if I was going to do the ARC this year, I’d get the Certus 100 terminal. It would do everything I need it to with email, Whatsapp, images at an economical running cost plan,” Phipps concludes.

When considering airtime, the Certus 200 has the same chipset unit as the larger and costlier 700, but the same airtime tariff as the 100. So unless you need the increased upload speeds of the 200, the 100 will have roughly the same download speed but at half the cost.

An “expert fisherman” has been missing off the North Carolina coast for nearly one week – and authorities fear the worst after his boat was discovered drifting without any sign of its owner.

Jeffrey Kale, 47, was last seen around 4 p.m. on Saturday, when he left the Southport Wildlife Boat Ramp, the US Coast Guard explained.

A  video posted on Kale’s Facebook page  at 3:50 p.m. showed him leaving the dock area by himself.

A second round of searches was called off around 8 p.m. Wednesday night,  the officials announced .

Authorities had reinvigorated the rescue effort after Kale’s 32-foot Cape Hope center console boat was found 83 miles off the coast of Wrightsville Beach on Tuesday,  the Coast Guard said in a press release .

There was fishing gear on the boat, but no sign of Kale.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the Kale family during this difficult time,” said Cmdr. Corrie Sergent, Sector North Carolina deputy commander.

“Saving lives at sea drives our rescue crews to train and operate every single day with the hope to bring people home safely, which is why making the decision to suspend a search is truly one of the hardest things for our personnel to make and we do not take it lightly,” he added.

“We are grateful to the various Navy assets, commercial assistance, and multiple good Samaritans who have also assisted in the search.”

Over the last several days, rescue crews in the air and the sea logged about 100 combined man hours looking for Kale, the Coast Guard noted.

The effort was also aided by “multiple good Samaritan boaters,” the release stated.

Just a few days before he vanished, Kale, of Clover, SC, shared a photo of the boat parked on a trailer, writing that he was set to take a fishing trip with his son on Sunday to ring in spring break.

A few weeks earlier, Kale – who was described as an “expert fisherman” by police – had also posted a complaint about spring break not lining up with ideal fishing weather.

“The wind always blows the first 2 weeks of April,” he noted in the post.

Search suspended again for missing boater off North Carolina coast

yacht at sea

The Coast Guard suspended its active search a second time for a missing boater Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. off the coast of North Carolina.

Jeffrey Kale, 47, from Clover, South Carolina, was last seen around 4 p.m. on Saturday. He was reported overdue from a fishing trip around 10:30 p.m. on April 6. Kale initially launched his 32-foot Cape Horn boat from Southport Wildlife Boat Ramp in Brunswick County, according to Lt. Carl Hendrickson with the U.S. Coast Guard North Carolina Sector.

On Tuesday, Kale's vessel was discovered by another mariner, traveling northeast at approximately six miles an hour, 83 miles east of the Wrightsville Beach coast. No one was aboard the boat and there was no visible damage, according to a previous news release from the U.S. Coast Guard. The vessel was towed ashore, and investigators boarded.

That prompted officials to restart a search that had been suspended.

Rescue crews searched by air and by sea for approximately 100 combined hours since the initial missing person's report and covered more than 11,690 square miles, which is an area greater than the size of Maryland.

Crews involved included Navy assets, Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City HC-130 Hercules airplane, Coastal patrol boat USCGC Steelhead (WPB 87324) and multiple good Samaritan boaters.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the Kale family during this difficult time,” said Cmdr. Corrie Sergent, Sector North Carolina deputy commander. “Saving lives at sea drives our rescue crews to train and operate every single day with the hope to bring people home safely, which is why making the decision to suspend a search is truly one of the hardest things for our personnel to make and we do not take it lightly. We are grateful to the various Navy assets, commercial assistance, and multiple good Samaritans who have also assisted in the search.”
