"Some choices sometimes seem immutable at Lagoon: for example, the choice of working with VPLP architects, the world’s most successful naval architects in multihull racing, or that of fixed keels rather than daggerboards for simplicity, ease of beaching and safety in case of impact. However, each new Lagoon model offers often major innovations to make cruising even more enjoyable." - Lagoon Yachts

Captain – Grigoris Stronis

Grigoris was born in 1997 in Athens and moved straight away in Santorini where his passion for the sea grew within him. He found himself closer to the sea day by day, enjoying watersports and swimming. His family has a background of hospitality as both his parents have worked as tour operators all over Greece. From the age of 18 onwards, when he attained his National Offshore Sailing Diploma, he has covered more and more miles in daily and weekly cruises in Greece as well as many yacht transfers in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. He has also worked as a base technician, covering up the winter maintenance of an abundance of yachts.

Grigoris is a very friendly, professional captain that will make sure the guests of Valium 52 feel like their home on board.

Chef – Nina Dania Nina was born in 1998, in Patras, Greece. She grew up in a suburb, by the sea, and she has been by the sea since. At the age of seven, she started taking sailing courses, and soon enough, sailing had won her heart. After ten years of racing sailing, the time came to put the sea aside for a while, and study to enter university. In 2017, she entered the “Special Needs Education” in the Department of Educational and Social Policy, in Pa.Mak. University, Greece, but not much time passed, and the sea started calling her back. When she realized that living on the sea is possible, she decided to pause her studies and return to her natural environment, and since then, she has been spending most of her time on boats. Working as a hostess on sailing yachts is something that came natural. Her passion for cooking, but also for hosting people, combined with her nautical knowledge gave her the ability to evolve quickly in the profession. By now, having already four years of experience, many nautical miles, both inshore and offshore, and with a cooking passion that constantly grows, she knows where her place- to be is, and she is giving the best of herself in all aspects of her job and life onboard.

Stewardess/Deckhand – Natalia Panariellou Natalia was born in 1992 in Athens. As soon as you meet her, you know that she is a very motivated person with a very positive and optimistic attitude. She will make sure that all guests on board are experiencing the highest quality-hospitality, with her strong willingness and her strong work ethic along with her background in managing clients requests in the competitive and fast-paced environment of luxury fashion. Through communication, teamwork and organization, Natalia is ready to give the best service to her guests having amazing vacations!

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

valium 52 yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

valium 52 yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

valium 52 yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

valium 52 yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

valium 52 yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

valium 52 yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

valium 52 yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Valium (diazepam) belongs to the benzodiazepine class of medication. It's approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to manage anxiety symptoms, treat alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and as add-on therapy for skeletal muscle spasms and convulsive disorders .

Diazepam is the single active ingredient in Valium. Valium is available as an oral tablet, suspension, intramuscular and intravenous injection, and rectal gel.

Diazepam can take anywhere from a few minutes to one hour to begin working, depending on the route of administration. Injectable, nasal, or rectal formulations have a quicker onset of action than oral.

Valium should work similarly whether it is taken for anxiety or agitation. However, individual responses to it can vary.

In general, Valium’s onset of action can vary but is relatively quick, typically occurring within 30 to 60 minutes after taking the medication by mouth. The medication can last up to several hours in the body before another dose is needed. For most indications, Valium can be taken every six to eight hours.

The peak concentration of Valium in the bloodstream typically occurs within one hour after oral administration.

Because Valium is processed in the liver, liver function can impact the drug’s metabolism. If the drug’s metabolism is affected by poor liver function, the drug may take longer to leave the body, resulting in prolonged effects.

Body Weight

Body weight can impact how Valium is distributed in the body. Individuals with more body fat may experience a slower onset of action. Therefore, Valium may take longer to work.

Age can play a role in older individuals due to age-related changes in metabolism that may exist. These changes may result in a slower onset of Valium.

An individual's metabolism can impact how Valium is broken down in the body. A faster metabolism may result in a quicker onset of action. Those with slower metabolisms may take longer to feel the drug’s effects.

Drug Tolerance

If Valium is taken excessively, drug tolerance may develop over time. If Valium tolerance occurs, higher doses of the drug may be needed. This may also influence how quickly the drug works.

What Is Valium?

Diazepam is the active ingredient found in Valium. It belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines. Valium is FDA-approved for the short-term relief of anxiety symptoms, symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal, and muscle spasms.

It should not be used in children under 6 months of age. Adults 65 and older should take precautions while using it or avoid it altogether.

Brand-name Valium is available as tablets only. Generic diazepam is available as a tablet, oral solution, injection, and rectal gel.

Off-label uses of Valium include:

  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Sedation in the hospital setting
  • The treatment of muscle symptoms in children with cerebral palsy

Valium carries boxed warnings—the FDA's strictest safety warning added to a prescription drug label—regarding the potential for abuse, misuse, addiction, dependence, and withdrawal reactions.

Controlled Substance

Valium is a federally controlled substance (C-IV) due to its risk of abuse or dependence.  Schedule IV drugs  are considered to have a low potential for abuse and dependence.

How It Works

Valium works by enhancing the activity of a chemical messenger found in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid ( GABA ), making it more effective.

By attaching to GABA receptors, Valium produces a calming effect on the brain and reduces nervous system activity. This calming effect helps lessen symptoms associated with anxiety, alcohol withdrawal, and muscle spasms.

When compared to other benzodiazepines, Valium works similarly. However, it is considered to be one of the longer-acting benzodiazepines and has a medium potency (strength).

Dosing Valium

The usual daily dose of Valium for anxiety in adults is 2–10 milligrams (mg), taken every six to 12 hours, depending on symptom severity.

The usual dose of Valium, when used as add-on therapy for relieving muscle spasms in adults, is 2–10 mg, taken every six to eight hours.

These are common doses, but there may be instances in which higher doses are required. Follow the instructions of the healthcare provider treating the condition when considering Valium dosing.

The most common side effects of Valium are:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of control of body movements

Severe side effects of Valium include:

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Slowed breathing

Long-term side effects may occur if physical dependence on Valium develops and may include withdrawal if stopped suddenly. Withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Cognitive difficulties such as trouble remembering or concentrating
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Muscle twitching

Avoid taking Valium before or while engaging in activities that require you to be alert and attentive. Ensure Valium is only taken as instructed by a healthcare provider.

Boxed Warnings

Valium carries boxed warnings regarding the potential for abuse, misuse, addiction, dependence, and withdrawal reactions.

Taking Valium at the same time as opioid medicines, alcohol, or other medications that affect the central nervous system can be harmful and cause severe side effects such as drowsiness, breathing problems, coma, and death.

Valium carries a risk of abuse, misuse, and potentially addiction even if taken as prescribed. This can lead to overdose and serious side effects, including coma and death.

Valium can also cause physical dependence and withdrawal reactions.

Safely Taking Valium

The following preexisting health conditions would disqualify someone from taking Valium:

  • Myasthenia gravis (an autoimmune condition)
  • Severe breathing problems
  • Severe liver problems
  • Sleep apnea syndrome

Long-term use of Valium should be avoided unless instructed by a healthcare provider. Clinical trials have not evaluated the effectiveness of Valium used longer than four months.

Use in Specific Populations

The following circumstances should be considered before taking Valium:

  • Pregnancy : Valium should be avoided during pregnancy if possible. The drug has shown evidence of human risk in clinical trials. However, the benefits of using the medication may outweigh the risks.
  • Breastfeeding : Breastfeeding is not recommended for those taking Valium. Valium passes through breast milk.
  • Age : Valium should be used cautiously or avoided entirely in adults 65 years and older. Its half-life increases by one hour each year over the age of 40. This can put older people at risk of serious and long-lasting side effects such as cognitive impairment, falls , and fractures. It is recommended that the smallest effective dose be used to prevent side effects.

Potential for Interaction

Avoid taking Valium with the following medications due to their potential effect on drug absorption and effectiveness:

  • Some seizure medications, such as Lamictal (lamotrigine) and carbamazepine
  • Antifungals such as ketoconazole
  • Antidepressants such as Prozac (fluoxetine)
  • Prilosec (omeprazole) , a drug for heartburn relief
  • Dilantin (phenytoin), a drug to prevent and treat seizures

Opioids and other medications that act on the central nervous system, such as anxiety medications, muscle relaxers, narcotic pain medications, and some antidepressants, should be avoided due to the potential harm that may occur as a result of taking these medications together.

Alcohol should be avoided while taking Valium.

How Effective Is Valium?

Studies have compared the effectiveness of Valium with other benzodiazepines. In general, they have similar effectiveness in managing anxiety and muscle spasms.

One study compared the efficacy and tolerability of diazepam and alprazolam, the active ingredient in Xanax, for the treatment of panic disorder. The results showed that diazepam was an effective alternative to alprazolam.

Overall, studies show that Valium is an effective treatment option for both anxiety and muscle soreness.

Alternative Treatment Options

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been proven to be an effective nondrug treatment option for anxiety.

Some other nondrug treatment options for anxiety include:

  • Music therapy
  • Acupuncture

Nondrug treatment options for muscle pain and spasms include:

  • Massage therapy
  • Relaxation therapy
  • Physical therapy

Alcohol withdrawal should be appropriately treated by a healthcare professional. In minor alcohol withdrawal, medication may not be needed, but evaluation and observation by a healthcare provider are still recommended.

Diazepam is a benzodiazepine that is FDA-approved for anxiety, symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal, and muscle spasms. It is available as an oral tablet, suspension, intramuscular and intravenous injection, and rectal gel.

Valium generally begins working within 30 to 60 minutes after taking the medication by mouth. The medication can last anywhere from a few hours to several hours in the body before another dose is needed. For most indications, Valium can be taken every six to eight hours.

Valium carries boxed warnings regarding the potential for abuse, misuse, addiction, dependence, and withdrawal reactions. Before starting treatment, talk to your healthcare provider about how to safely take it.

Green Point beach near Yamba littered with debris after abandoned boat runs aground

A remote beach near Yamba on the New South Wales north coast is littered with debris and diesel after a boat ran aground and was smashed to pieces in the surf overnight.

Witnesses said the boat was abandoned by its occupants as they were attempting to cross the Clarence River bar around lunchtime yesterday.

NSW Road and Maritime said the occupants were evacuated from the vessel by a NSW Marine Rescue crew.

Angourie resident Oli Coe said he later saw the vessel adrift about 2 kilometres offshore.

He watched the boat throughout the day and at one point saw another vessel alongside it.

He said someone boarded vessel and put out its anchor.

Jetsam on beach

"As the wind got up through the rest of the afternoon, we watched the boat drifting and dragging on its anchor and eventually it just dragged way too far and ended up on the beach," Mr Coe said.

At one stage Mr Coe and two friends used jetskis to get out to the boat to see if they could do anything to help.

He said he could not understand why it was not salvaged before it ran aground near Green Point.

"There was definitely some damage to the boat but it was in perfectly good condition [before that]," Mr Coe said.

Clean-up concerns

Locals have spent this morning on the beach, dragging piles of debris above the high tide mark in a bid to ensure it is not taken back out to sea with the next high tide this evening.

Angourie resident Kim Wood said the usually pristine beach at Green Point looked like a "rubbish dump".

"I'm looking at kilometres of debris," she said.

"There is timber, there is oil cans, jerry cans full of diesel, so much plastic, and everything is soaked in diesel.

"You can still see all debris in the ocean."

Ms Wood said the area was home to a wide range of birdlife including oyster catchers and curlews.

Too dangerous to tow

NSW Maritime said the boat was deemed too dangerous for authorities to board or tow.

Senior boating safety officer Bret Ryan said authorities needed to put safety first.

"Marine Rescue revisited the boat several times on Monday, and eventually the Water Police came from Coffs Harbour," Mr Ryan said.

"They came to the same conclusion that it was too dangerous."

"At that point the vessel was secure and the hope was it would remain in that position but unfortunately that didn't happen."

Mr Ryan said the main hazard on the beach was from any sharp objects that might remain buried in the sand.

The Los Angeles  socialite who mowed down two young brothers  in a drunken hit-and-run has been accused of conspiring with her husband and daughter from behind bars in a bid to get a new trial.

Rebecca Grossman, the wife of renowned plastic surgeon Peter Grossman, was found guilty on Feb. 23 of all counts over the Sept. 29, 2020, crash that killed brothers Mark Iskander, 11, and Jacob Iskander, 8 . She faces 34 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors believe she’s been calling her husband and her teenage daughter from jail in a desperate bid to have them influence witnesses, the jury, the judge and her ex-lover, the Daily Mail reports .

Prosecutors believe Rebecca Grossman plotted with her husband, Peter Grossman, as well as her daughter to sway witnesses and tamper with jury.

Deputy District Attorneys for LA County Ryan Gould and Jamie Castro have filed a motion providing calls Grossman made to her husband and her 19-year-old daughter, Alexis.

Prosecutors fear that Grossman may have asked the pair to track down key players in the case to sway Judge Joseph Brandolino toward giving her a new trial.

What’s more, Grossman allegedly told Alexis to publicly release a body-camera video from a deputy. The footage was sealed by Brandolino.

Mark Iskander (left) and Jacob Iskander (right) were killed in the Sep. 29, 2020 crash caused by Rebecca Grossman.

Grossman allegedly wrote a letter to the little boys’ mother after she was found guilty last month.

Nancy and Karim Iskander, the parents of the two boys tragically killed in the ordeal, said they received the letter from Grossman on March 13.

They have asked the county to step in and bar Grossman from contacting them.

A photo of Rebecca Grossman's Mercedes vehicle is shown following the fatal crash on Sep. 29, 2020.

Elsewhere, at least two jurors said they were contacted by Paul Stuckey, a private investigator “for the family.”

“This investigator did not properly identify” which family he was working for, the outlet adds.

It is unclear how Stuckley got his hands on the jurors’ contact information, and deputies argue that the only possible way was for him to access a pre-sealing jury list, which is both jury tampering and illegally having personal information of jurors.

After being found guilty, Rebecca Grossman allegedly wrote a letter to Mark and Jacob Iskander's mother.

Deputies are seeking to have Grossman barred from receiving visitors who are not on her legal team, and want her mail checked, according to the Los Angeles Times .

Grossman is accused of using her phone privileges to engage in “potentially illegal conduct.”

“These calls include admissions to violating the court protective order regarding the disclosure of evidence on the internet and to the press,” the filing states.

Never miss a story.

In court last month, prosecutors said Grossman, 62, was  racing her ex-MLB lover Scott Erickson,  who was in another car, after a boozed-up lunch.

Mark and Jacob were crossing the street in the crosswalk with their mother and youngest brother when Grossman slammed into them and fled, leaving the boys for dead.

The socialite struck the boys with such force that the older brother flew more than 250 feet.

Prosecutors said that Grossman was racing her Mercedes SUV with former MLB pitcher Scott Erickson, her ex-lover.

Prosecutors presented evidence that the data recorder in Grossman’s white Mercedes showed she was speeding at up to 81 mph and tapped her brakes, slowing her to 73 mph, less than two seconds before a collision that set off her airbags.

Nancy Iskander was at the tragic scene and only narrowly saved herself and her then-5-year-old son Zachary from the same fate.

Grossman — who blew a 0.076% and had Valium in her system — denied killing the boys throughout her trial.

The Babe Paley in ‘Feud’ Is Not the Woman I Knew

An illustration of a woman surrounded by four swans.

By Belle Burden

Ms. Burden is a lawyer in New York.

The first time I saw Naomi Watts playing my grandmother Babe Paley in “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” she was in tears. She had just discovered her husband’s affair with Happy Rockefeller, the governor’s wife, finding him on the bedroom floor, scrubbing a stain of menstrual blood from their plush carpet. Babe summons Truman Capote to her Fifth Avenue apartment, her face set in distress, her mascara running. He tries to comfort her, handing her a Valium, reminding her that her marital arrangement is still worth it; she can buy a Matisse to soothe her broken heart.

None of this happened.

The torrid, bloodied scene is based in part on Capote’s short story “La Côte Basque, 1965,” published in Esquire in 1975, and on Laurence Leamer’s 2021 nonfiction book, “Capote’s Women.” In Capote’s story, the husband, a media titan who is given a different name, is never on the floor, never discovered by his wife; he scrubs the sheets in the bathtub and places them in the oven to dry. In his book, Mr. Leamer surmises that the governor’s wife in Capote’s story is Marie Harriman, not Ms. Rockefeller.

I can accept that details are changed when real people are fictionalized. I know it is hard to capture the ineffable magic of someone’s presence. There are no live recordings of Babe, no way for an actress to know how she moved and spoke. What I cannot accept is the theft of my grandmother’s narrative.

I was 9 when she died, the day after her 63rd birthday, in 1978. As a grandmother to me, my brother and my older cousins, she was magic. She let us run wild at Kiluna Farm, her house in Manhasset on Long Island. She insisted we join the adults at every meal. To entertain us, she would arrange a large piece of lettuce or spinach in her teeth, smiling, pretending it wasn’t there. We would dissolve into laughter, squealing, “Baba,” the name we called her. She cheered when my cousin Brooke directed us in elaborate skits performed for her guests after dinner.

My grandmother was tactile and affectionate. She always pulled me onto her lap, kissed the nape of my neck and told me what flavor she tasted — honey, marmalade, lavender. At bedtime, she used her long red manicured nails to compose imaginary paintings on my face. She let me try on all her jewelry, the two of us in front of her mirror, her graceful hands clasping necklaces around my neck, bracelets on my small wrists. She had fake versions of my favorite pieces made for me for Christmas, all perfectly arranged in a red lacquer box.

My grandmother was wounded by Capote taking the things she told him, changing them, betraying her confidence and her privacy, which she guarded fiercely. Now her life has been stolen and twisted again, posthumously, by the creators of “Feud,” including the executive producer Ryan Murphy, the writer Jon Robin Baitz and the director Gus Van Sant. In the show, Babe is drawn as the ultimate victim: of her husband’s infidelity, Capote’s betrayal, her failing health. In victimhood, in her constant suffering, in the dramatic fabrications, she becomes one-dimensional, a woman defined by surfaces — a woman defined by men, reconstructing her life to suit their needs.

I had planned to take the show lightly, to remind myself it was made to be fun, a campy romp. I did not expect it to upset me. But it is a strange thing to see one’s family portrayed on television, to see a beloved grandparent dying again, to see facts changed, stories embellished, demeaning details added for the sake of entertainment. Babe comes off fairly well, at least compared with the other fictionalized swans. Her fame, her status as an icon of the era, is burnished by the show. I should not complain. Yet, as I watched each episode, as the inaccuracies and misrepresentations stacked up, I felt furious, in defense of her.

In real life, the grandmother I knew wasn’t a pill popper or prone to drinking to excess. She would never have been so shallow as to be placated by a piece of art or jewelry. She wouldn’t have worn a shift dress, a clip hat or baggy pants. She was not, as Capote tells us in the show, an “ugly duckling” before a car accident in her teens; as recounted to me by my mother, Amanda Burden, my grandmother lost only her teeth in that accident, not her cheekbones, and she was, by many accounts, quite beautiful before the event. My grandmother quit smoking the day she was diagnosed with lung cancer; in almost every episode of the show, Babe smokes, even after chemotherapy sessions. According to my mother, the birthday party featured in the fifth episode, in which Babe ends up drunk in a bathtub, never happened. The writers of the show have embellished the facts of my grandmother’s life. The viewing public, including close friends of mine, have accepted this portrayal as the truth.

My grandmother was far more complex than that. She was brilliant. She was funny. She was rarely at rest. She read constantly. She could lead a conversation on any topic. She was an artist, drawing in pencil and sculpting in clay, skills she kept hidden from most of the world. She was tall — 5-foot-9 — and her entry into any room was regal, commanding. She had a steely strength, not a weepy one, and a warm and playful charisma. Her famous style was born from those things: intelligence and artistry.

The creators of “Feud” have made an entertaining and stylish show. But to my knowledge, no one in my family, not even my mother, was consulted by the creators, writers, directors or cast members to lend color or truth to Babe’s portrait, to her strengths and struggles, her complexities and contradictions. Had they asked us and a different portrait of my grandmother — faithful to her, multidimensional — had been drawn, the whole of the story would have had more shape, more tension, more depth.

What I wish more than anything is that my grandmother had lived long enough, and been bold enough, to tell her own story, claiming it before anyone had the chance to steal it from her.

Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography

April 30–june 21, 2003.

Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography , an exhibition of 20th-century photographs of Moscow, opens at Columbia University's Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 and remains on display through Saturday, June 21, 2003.

Moscow has been a powerful magnet for many Russian photographers of the 20th century. Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography presents the work of 31 photographers, whose images have defined the visual experience of Moscow from the 1920s to the present. Diverse in form and strategy, the 90 photographs chosen for the exhibition trace the history of Russian documentary photography and offer insight into individual practices. From Aleksandr Rodchenko's constructivist visions and Evgenii Khaldei's humanist landscapes to Igor Moukhin's scenes of urban spectacle and alienation in the works of Russia's key 20th-century photographers, Moscow ventures beyond the expected image as a site of famous landmarks, architectural treasures and dramatic lifestyles.

Early 20th-century photographers Boris Ignatovich and Arkadii Shaikhet saw themselves in the vanguard of an emerging mass-media culture, defining with their cameras the visual experience of Soviet modernity. For nearly 70 years, Soviet photography was assigned the duty of maintaining the ideological rigidity of the Soviet State. Yet, as examples of the work of Iakov Khalip, Anatolii Egorov, Mikhail Savin, and Mark Markov-Grinberg show, Soviet photographic practices were much more complex than has been previously acknowledged. The works of these photographers remain intensely compelling to a modernist eye.

Contemporary Russian photographers, such as Lev Melikhov, Valerii Stigneev and Sergei Leontiev, engage with the legacy of the Soviet documentary photography. But for them the documentary is a complex and multivalent genre, which incorporates subjectivity, ambiguity and reflexivity and comments on social and cultural issues without losing sight of the position from which that commentary is made. In the recent photographs by Vladimir Kupriyanov, Igor Moukhin, Anna Gorunova and Pakito Infante, the "real" space of Moscow is replaced by an imaginary and optical spaces of virtuality.

The works in the exhibition are on loan from Moscow's Cultural Center Dom, and many are being shown outside Russia for the first time. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Wallach Art Gallery is publishing an illustrated catalogue with a scholarly essay by the exhibition curator, Nadia Michoustina, a Ph.D. candidate in Columbia University's Department of Slavic Languages. The essay presents a nuanced history of Russian photography of the 20th century, and contributes to an interpretation of extraordinary images.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More

Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.

Thx a lot! We are waiting for you!

It is a nice place to gather specially at the lounge The service and staff very good I like the river view The food is almost like all restaurants in Russia they serve different cuisine. Staring Russian appetizer till Asian dishes Presentation and taste amazing... I consider it overpriced little bit More

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

Had a large group dinner here. Food was above average and service quite good. The real attraction is the view of Moscow from the river on a nice night. Great place for a larger group dinner. More

Moscow's High Rise Bohemia: The International Business District With No Business

valium 52 yacht

  • Written by Dario Goodwin
  • Published on March 17, 2015

The Moscow International Business Center (Also known as Moskva-City ) was meant to be Russia ’s ticket into the Western world. First conceived in 1992, the district at the edge of Moscow’s city center is intended to contain up to 300,000 inhabitants, employees and visitors at any given moment and, when completed, will house over 4 million square meters of prime retail, hotel and office space to create what the Russian government desired most from this project: an enormous financial district that could dwarf London’s Canary Wharf and challenge Manhattan . Twenty three years later though, Moscow-based real estate company Blackwood estimates that as much as 45% of this new space is entirely vacant and rents have plummeted far below the average for the rest of Moscow. The only press Moskva-City is attracting is for tenants like the High Level Hostel , a hostel catering to backpackers and other asset-poor tourists on the 43rd floor of the Imperia Tower , with prices starting at $25.50 for a bed in a six-person room. This is not the glittering world of western high finance that was envisioned back in the post-Soviet 90s; but what has it become instead?

valium 52 yacht

As one might expect from a project of this sheer ambition, Moskva-City has a troubled past. The economic crash in 2008 hit Russia hard enough to evict the previous Mayor of Moscow , Yuri Luzhkov, who had been a cheerleader for the district, and replace him with the considerably more austere Sergei Sobyanin, who famously declared that the whole idea was an “urban planning mistake.” But as recently as 2013, the Wall Street Journal was triumphantly claiming that Moskva-City had risen from the dead, citing 80% occupancy rates and glowing quotes from industry insiders claiming that Moskva-City was the "place to be." Driven by record highs in oil prices, Moscow looked poised to become the next Dubai .

Instead, Moscow is now in the grip of an economic winter prompted by western sanctions and drops in the price of oil. The large financial groupings that Moskva-City was meant to shelter have been warned off by their inability to issue credit to international markets, for example - but Moskva-City isn’t just an Empire State Building left empty by the Great Depression.

A fundamental problem that is holding Moskva back compared to the rest of Moscow is the simple fact that currently, getting to Moskva-City is nigh-on impossible at peak hours. Moscow has long been plagued with transport problems, ever since the government failed to match the dramatic expansion of the city with a dramatic expansion of the transport system after the Second World War. Despite being only 2.5 miles from the Kremlin , Moskva-City is only just inside the ring road that bounds the city center and which acts as the only real transport link to it (and as a result, is clogged by construction vehicles.) A railway and metro hub has been finished, but so far only runs a one-stop shuttle service to the closest Metro station that is actually integrated with the rest of Moscow Metro. The isolation of the outer districts is a large, negative part of the Moscow psyche, and it’s not surprising that this is driving away the globetrotting financial elite this project was meant to attract.

valium 52 yacht

The project is managed by architectural practice No.6, which is a constituent part of the large Moscow based practice Mosproject-2 , which is itself a public corporation headed up by Mikhail Vasilyevich Posokhin, who is apparently the “People’s Architect of Russia.” Despite all this state involvement, the project has still managed to become bogged down in bureaucratic infighting - each lot is managed and developed individually, which has led to developers competing for occupants by slashing rates.

Much has been written about the way modern financial districts and towers that inhabit them can be unwelcoming, forbidding or even hostile by design, but the skyscrapers of Moskva-City seem even less friendly than usual. The site - a former stone quarry, chosen out of necessity as the only place in the city center where a new district could be plausibly constructed - is isolated both physically and visually, leaving the cluster a stark anomaly on the city skyline. Even the names seem more imposing than optimistic now: Imperia, City of Capitals , Steel Peak.

valium 52 yacht

The Mercury City Tower , so far the tallest completed building on the site, is officially “a strong reference to Russian constructivism, [which] gives the tower a strong vertical thrust similar to the one found in New York's Chrysler building .” It would be easy to criticize the Mercury City Tower for picking ‘inspirations’ that are so totally opposed to each other - The Chrysler building the defining emblem of American pre-crash confidence and Constructivism created with the express purpose (especially architecturally) of extending the Bolshevik revolution into a social revolution - but the way they smash those two inspirations together is almost beautifully ironic.

valium 52 yacht

Even though the High Level Hostel is less an asset to a financial district than it is a PR problem, it’s been a huge success since opening in September, already ranked 27th out of 766 hostels in Moscow by TripAdvisor. According to the management agency for Moskva-City , 58% of the new occupant signings this year have been non-financial, including a number of small to medium size businesses. Other areas of office space have been occupied by a restaurant and a culinary school, while another space has been redeveloped into a 6,000 seat theater.

While Moskva-City is failing to be a financial district that could take on the world, it’s inadvertently becoming a humanized space catering to the very groups that the Russian economic miracle left behind. Taking advantage of rents lower than the rest of Moscow , the world class facilities and the sheer desperation of the developers, the humanization of Moskva-City could well create the world’s first high-rise bohemia.

valium 52 yacht

Of course, these are not spaces designed for a community, or even for people: these are spaces designed for money, and there’s little scope for changing something that seems so baked into the design of Moskva-City . The High Level Hostel is trading off of the irony of being a hostel in a banking tower, but it’s perfectly possible that at some point people will no longer find this joke funny (especially in a building that seems hostile to the very idea of humor). The isolation of Moskva, even though it allowed this community to spring up in the first place, is just as detrimental to a humanized district as it is to a financial one: even bohemians need to move around the city, or the district risks becoming a black-spot instead of a hot-spot.

Moskva-City’s isolation won’t last forever. The end of construction will open the roads up to traffic, and plans to properly integrate the spur lines of the Metro in this area into the wider system are well under way. The integration of the district will inevitably push up rents, and the Russian economy will eventually boom once again. When that happens, Moskva-City is prime territory to be reconquered by the giants of international finance, and it seems unlikely that the municipal or national governments would want to step in to protect this accidental district. For now, though, the towers capture perfectly this moment of Russia ’s schizophrenic understanding of its place in the world.
