Yacht Owner’s Story: Moonen’s ‘Pura Vida’ Hull #191

Jim Shay bought the Moonen 99 Hull 191 (ex-Phoebe, Selene, now Pura Vida) in the spring of 2017 from Denison yacht broker, Alex Clarke. He is currently having a wonderful time on board with family and friends. In this story, Jim explains how owning a Moonen has fulfilled a long-cherished dream.

I’ve loved being on the water ever since I started boating with my family at an early age. My path to yacht ownership began in the early 1970s with our family’s first boat: a 14’ fiberglass motorboat with a pull start engine! As time went on, our boats grew in size and pedigree. My wife Monica and I own a 38’ Hinckley Picnic Boat and a 66’ Azimut, but we longed for something grander, with more exceptional seagoing capabilities.

In addition to our own boats, we have been chartering yachts. Over the years, we connected with a captain-chef couple on the 105-foot Heesen  Lady J . When they moved to a larger boat, a 130-foot Christensen  Sweet Escape , we followed them. Between my parents and I, we would spend up to seven weeks a year on charter on board Sweet Escape in New England, the Caribbean & the Bahamas.

On each occasion, we loved reconnecting with family and friends… Boating is an activity that is comfortable and fun for every generation of the family and a great way to enjoy a holiday with fun watersports, fine dining and relaxing and rejuvenating oneself. There is always something to do on a superyacht regardless of your interests, and enjoying them in some of the most beautiful surroundings in the world; is the icing on the cake.  

A Dutch dream Over the years I developed a real love for the clean and classic lines of Dutch motoryachts: Moonen, Feadship, Hakvoort or Heesen, I admired them all. Despite the advice from family and friends to avoid the investment associated with yacht ownership, I longed to own one myself one day. This urge never abated and I continued to quietly search for the right boat.

Early in the spring of 2017, I came across the listing for Moonen hull 191, I was intrigued by her “sea-luminum, fast hull” design. Knowing she was a Moonen, I anticipated she would be of exceptional quality. The Christensen we chartered was sold and we had hired the first officer and his fiancé to run our boats. They were in the Bahamas by late March 2017 and I asked them to fly to Palm Beach to take a look at the Moonen. Once onboard, they were deeply impressed with her high-quality construction and impressive Rhoades Young design.

Trusting their judgment completely, I put her under contract, sight unseen, and stepped on board myself for the first time for sea trials in Fort Lauderdale that April. There were many things that made this the right deal for me: she had a motivated seller, she was a Moonen, her engine hours were quite low considering her age (2009) and her layout and volume were spot-on.

Smart design As I walked into the wheelhouse I was blown away by the helm stations, and the engine room was a textbook example of how to build a boat of the highest standard. She has outstanding crew accommodations, far exceeding most boats of her size. These crew facilities were not at the cost of the guest suites either, illustrating how smartly designed Moonens are. People talk about how long it takes to build such boats but I have now confirmed that there’s a reason for that!

The sea and salt of the maritime environment is quite inhospitable over time and our Moonen was ready for a few months in the yard. During that time, she had a full paint job, all new interior soft goods and we added all the latest technology for navigation and entertainment. We had two captains run the refit, both skippers were hugely impressed with the construction and strength of our Moonen.

Something different The result today is a fabulous superyacht that is fully updated. She is so comfortable, so seaworthy and so quiet. Sitting in the cabins while underway you can hear a pin drop. It’s unbelievable. Her variable propellers make her extraordinarily fuel efficient. The heating and air-conditioning system are superb and whisper-quiet, you don’t see a vent anywhere on this boat. The joinery and cabinetry, the fit and finish of the interiors of the closets, the lockers, the door handles, the smooth, rounded woodwork in the lower passageway; there’s a long list of excellence. I think sometimes people don’t understand the difference in quality between boats. The minute you step on board, the minute you round the point and head into seas, you feel it; you know she’s different. 

I can get emotional about my yacht. I love my wife, my children, and my family… And then I love my boat. She has exceeded our expectations and is a pleasure to own – I am truly proud of her builders back in the Netherlands and to experience personally the quality which I’d previously only read about. We’ve had charter guests on board this winter who have raved about her and her comforts. Last summer, we were at anchorages all over New England and I lost count of how often I’d see someone going by and giving us the thumbs-up sign of approval!

My friends and I have different lives and different interests, but the one thing we all share is the way we reconnect on the ocean. It’s just a beautiful part of life and we want to introduce people to this kind of vacation by offering our Moonen  Pura Vida for charter.

We enjoy her often ourselves and we hope to bring her over to Europe. She’s got a range of 2,500 nautical miles, so we can take her just about anywhere, the world is our oyster.

Karen grew up on a farm in Oregon and was lucky enough to travel at a young age. After teaching at various outdoor and leadership centres around the States, she eventually found her way to boats after becoming a SCUBA instructor. After moving up to Captain on the SCUBA vessels, Karen transferred to yachts and has been in various positions chartering from Croatia to Canada to the Caribbean. Her diverse skills and extensive experience give her the ability to deliver unique and fabulous charter experiences to remember.

Presented by DMA Yachting, the majestic charter yacht Pura Vida is a 48 ft sailing catamaran. Pura Vida spends the summer and winter season in British Virgin Islands. She was completed by the well-known ship builder Dufour in 2021. The expansive yacht layout features 4 large cabins and easily accommodates up to 8 guests.

Pura Vida is classified primarily as a sailing catamaran. The the heart of the yacht is the main saloon, which connects to the aft deck. The aft deck features a variety of seating areas and that's where the guests spend most of their time. The immersive cabins offer unbeatable views in the morning and are located just below deck. The cabins offer designer mattrace beds and feature ensuite bathrooms. Multiple portholes supply a sunny feeling, with the option for darkness and privacy.

Pura Vida Owners on Why They Sold and What They Learned Along the Way

The sale of Pura Vida to Vera Bradley closed Tuesday, so we followed up with Founders Paul Goodman and Griffin Thall to find out more about why they sold the company, lessons learned during Pura Vida’s rapid growth cycle and what they are excited about for the future.

Vera Bradley, a publicly traded company based in the Midwest that is best known for its quilted, colorful handbags, acquired 75% of Pura Vida for $75 million. Vera Bradley has the right to acquire the remaining 25% of the company in five years.

Griffin, 32, and Paul, 30, who owned 100% of the company, could earn up to $22.5 million more based on certain calendar 2019 targets.

Vera Bradley executives have said they were attracted to Pura Vida’s fast growth, strong financial profile, and digital expertise.

Pura Vida has essentially doubled revenue in each of the past two years and is profitable, with no debt.

The company’s revenue totaled $68.3 million in the year ended Dec. 31, 2018. Net income totaled $3.8 million and adjusted EBITDA $13.7 million, according to Vera Bradley filings. Pura Vida also had a 20% operating margin in 2018.

Vera Bradley, which is mostly brick-and-mortar focused, believes the digitally native Pura Vida can bring expertise to Vera Bradley. About 65% of Pura Vida’s sales come from e-commerce, 20% from wholesale and 14% from monthly subscriptions.

Paul Goodman and Griffin Thall : We weren’t really looking to sell quite honestly, we were looking for the best partner that could help take Pura Vida to the next level.

After interviewing over two dozen private equity firms, we were fortunate enough to connect with a strategic partner – Vera Bradley.

How do you think Vera Bradley will help Pura Vida?

Paul Goodman and Griffin Thall : We are confident that Vera Bradley will help optimize our back office functions as we continue to scale.

To start the new partnership, they plan to take over our accounting, finance, and legal needs, while letting our headquarters in La Jolla focus on branding, marketing, sales, social media, and operations.

What was one of the toughest moments in your entrepreneurial story and how did you overcome it?

Paul Goodman and Griffin Thall : I’d have to say that one of the toughest moments in our career has been learning how to scale a business with zero funding, along with building and managing a young staff.

Also, it has been extremely difficult to scale a business that relies on handmade goods that are sourced and manufactured all over the world.

Are there any key lessons you have learned on this journey?

Paul Goodman and Griffin Thall : One key lesson we have learned thus far is to put your head down and get to work, straight up.

There are so many people out there with ideas, products, and everything in between that they actually forget that for a business to take off, you NEED to put in the WORK.

Ever since day one, we have worked and did not stop working. We kept our eye on the prize and continued to build this business to where it is today.

Key takeaway: Push all the distractions to the side, don’t listen to anyone who tells you it’s a bad idea, and put your head down and get to work.

What are you most excited about now that the deal has closed?

Paul Goodman and Griffin Thall : We are most excited about working with the Vera Bradley team, which has 30-plus years of experience in operations, supply chain, wholesale, and building out retail stores.

The 26.3m/86'3" motor yacht 'Pura Vida' was built by Sunseeker in the United Kingdom at their Poole, Dorset shipyard. Her interior is styled by British designer design house Sunseeker and she was completed in 2016. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Sunseeker.

Guest Accommodation

Pura Vida has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 suites comprising one VIP cabin. She is also capable of carrying up to 4 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Range & Performance

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, with teak decks, she has impressive speed and great efficiency thanks to her planing hull. Powered by twin diesel MTU (12V2000 M96L) 1,950hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 24 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 30 knots with a range of up to 1,500 nautical miles from her 14,790 litre fuel tanks at 10 knots. Her water tanks store around 1,400 Litres of fresh water. She was built to CE Category B classification society rules, and is MCA Compliant.
