Six Tips For Planning Your Yacht Party

Planning a yacht party is no easy feat, but it can be with these six simple tips (and our FantaSea Yachts team to guide you along the way). Since 1980, we’ve had Southern California covered with our Marina del Rey party yacht rentals — from the ever-popular yacht wedding and celebratory yacht rentals to the premier Los Angeles yacht party . Ready to start planning? It’s smooth sailing (pun intended) from here on out!

Build your guest list

Big bash or intimate affair? Determining a headcount right from the beginning will help ease the headache of unaccounted for space issues and expenses. This will also help determine the best yacht rental for your soiree — not to mention your budget!

Here are some suggestions for putting together your guest list.

Initial planning for your guest list could include everyone that comes to mind. Basically, you start big and pare down depending on the yacht size, budget, and event. A retirement party might include employees as well as their significant others. On the other hand, a corporate team-building event would limit guests to employees only.

For weddings, you could start with an A list and a B list where the A list consists of close family and friends. The B list consists of everyone else like extended family or business associates. The A list gets the first round of invitations.

Envision your space

Take time to think about the layout of your space. Popular requests include a dance floor, lounge area, formal seating, bar station and dessert table. And, of course, if you have something else in mind, we’d love to hear your ideas! It’s important to envision how your space will be used. This allows you to envision how certain areas might affect the flow of your event and where you might want to avoid bottlenecking and excessive crowding. There are many ways to customize space when you rent a yacht in the Marina.

To theme or not to theme?

Yacht party themes can be general or ultra-specific – both types have their advantages. Mardi Gras or the roaring 20s? Dora the Explorer or Frozen? Refined elegance or 70s disco party? Or do you prefer to keep it simple and focus on certain colors and hues?

The advantage of having a detailed and specific theme is that it eliminates possible confusion for your guests. Everything from dress, food, formality can be included under the umbrella of a theme. Think of it as a party blueprint.

On the other hand, a less restrictive theme creates an ambiance that complements your event – under the stars with twinkle lights for an evening yacht birthday party or shimmery silver colors for a wedding anniversary.

Whatever you decide, the theme will set the tone for your event. And a theme will help build your accents, decor, and other creative touches. Once you set the course, the fun is in the details.

Customize with details

Speaking of details…don’t shy away from them. Whether it’s using an inside joke as the name of your signature cocktail , a customized dessert table or incorporating family heirlooms and photos at your celebration, the magic…as they say…is in the details. This is your chance to wow your guests with personalized efforts that will leave a lasting impression. Your Los Angeles yacht party can show your personal touch. Embrace it!

Delight with entertainment

Do your guests like to swarm a dance floor? Book a DJ that will get your crowd moving. Or do you like to move to live beats? From large big bands to smaller trios, live entertainment can seamlessly take your event from dinner to dancing. Planning a kids party? Welcome a magician or your child’s favorite character aboard.

Other ideas include cigar rolling, spirit tasting, poker tables and lawn games like cornhole (we’ve held games on our FantaSea One skydeck!), all of which are popular ways to keep your guests smiling and buzzing with energy. The possibilities with a yacht party are endless.

Consider your guests

There are a multitude of ways to make your guests feel special. From gluten-free to vegetarian to vegan, there is no shortage of ways to accommodate your guests with a delicious meal that meets their dietary restrictions. Collect those requests with your RSVPs. Accessibility needs? Address those from the start to ensure a comfortable environment. Hosting an open bar? Consider partnering up with a rideshare company to offer a promo code to your guests. These are different ways to make your guests feel valued, important and truly connected to your celebration.

Ok, sign me up! What’s next?

Ready to rent a yacht for a party? There is nothing quite as unique as a Los Angeles yacht charter and we’re the team to help bring your unique vision to life. We invite you to give us a call at 310-827-2220 or click here to submit an event query form to get you one step closer to hosting your dream bash.

People Also Ask:

What do you bring to a yacht party? We take care of everything, but, depending on the occasion, guests could bring items like sunscreen or a light jacket for cooler weather. Our expert planners will ensure your guests know what to expect well in advance of your yacht party.

How much does a yacht party cost? Depending on the number of guests, the day of the week, and catering selections, an event could be anywhere from $150 – $200 per person.

Share the post "How to host the boat party of a lifetime"

Sure, house parties are fun and a party at a lavish venue on land is sure to impress, but there are few things more exciting and extraordinary than a boat party. There’s something special about gathering with a group of your peers and sailing the seas to celebrate an occasion. Whether it’s a small gathering with your closest friends or a team-building event with colleagues, nothing beats music, sun and good company while out on the open water. Party planning takes a lot of preparation, and this is especially true of boat parties; a party on a boat requires more attention to detail to keep everyone safe while cruising down the coastline. Here’s our ultimate guide to hosting an unforgettable boat party that will rock the waves!

What type of boat should you rent for a boat party?

The type of boat you rent for a boat party largely depends on how many people will be on board and your budget. Normally, people would host a party on a yacht or a catamaran as they are luxurious and spacious. Not sure which one to choose? No problem, here are the pros and cons of chartering either a yacht or catamaran for a boat party.

People taking a selfie at a boat party on a yacht

When you hear the word “yacht” you might think of something that is high-end or exclusive in nature. If you’re looking to host a smaller, more luxurious gathering, a yacht is a great choice. The skipper and crew provide an intimate setting for your closest inner circle, and the yacht will have all of the amenities on board you need for a safe and fun ride. A yacht rental is a more expensive option however, it is great for a grand and opulent getaway.

With an abundance of space and comfort, catamarans are ideal for hosting bigger groups of people as they have a double-hulled structure, and are typically wider than other boats. Their structure makes them more suitable for traversing through shallow waters. Moreover, catamarans are more stable than other vessels, which is great for people who suffer from seasickness as they won’t sway too much on the water. Another great thing about catamarans is that they tend to be a more economic choice when compared to yachts, so you can party on a budget.

Other things to consider

Regardless of which type of boat you choose, we always recommend choosing an option with a skipper and crew on board to ensure the safety and comfort of all guests. Hosting a boat party is a lot of work and even if you have a boating licence, it’s best to have a skipper on board so that you can tend to your guests’ needs without having to worry about navigating a boat!

It’s also important to keep in mind that when you’re renting a boat for a party, you must first get permission from the boat owner. Many boat owners are fine with people hosting parties on their boats so long as there is open communication. Some owners even offer special amenities like water sports equipment for snorkelling or paddle surfing!

What time of year should you host a boat party?

People tend to prefer sailing in warmer weather, so the summer months are a popular time to throw a party on a boat. However, this is the high season which means that it will be more expensive to rent a boat, and destinations will be overrun with tourists. To avoid high boat rental prices and the crowds, consider hosting a boat party in late spring or early autumn when the weather is still warm but not scorching hot!

What do you need for a boat party?

People at a boat party drinking champagne and talking

Safety is of utmost priority, especially when out at sea! While most boats have first aid kits, fire extinguishers and life jackets on board, you should always double-check you’ve got everything you need in case of an emergency. Here’s a pre-departure checklist for smooth sailing at your boat party:

  • Extra life jackets and first aid essentials.
  • Personal medications.
  • Enough fuel for your journey.
  • Plenty of sunscreen and water!
  • Extra clothes in case yours get wet. Also, dress in layers and bring some sort of waterproof jacket just in case it rains.
  • Swimsuits, towels and sunglasses.
  • Extra coolers for beverages.
  • Party essentials like food, drinks and music. Don’t forget the music!

Be careful that whatever you bring on the boat doesn’t end up in the water. Don’t bring plastic bags because as soon as the wind picks up, they’re likely to fly off the boat. Other things to avoid bringing are glass containers and cigarettes, as they could both create hazards; you don’t want any shards of glass to hurt someone or fall into the sea, and you certainly don’t want to run the risk of starting a fire on board by smoking! Also, keep in mind that it might be hot, so it’s better to choose snacks that won’t melt in the sun. Finally, refrain from wearing perfume as it’s likely to attract bees, mosquitoes or other unwanted guests!

What is the best destination for a boat party?

There are three main ingredients for a fabulous boat party destination: sun, good weather and warm, sparkling water. Of course, there are plenty of places all over the world that fit the bill, but here are some trendy boat party destinations that are famous for their festive atmosphere.

The Balearic Islands, Spain

A beach in Ibiza. Palm trees in the foreground and boats sailing on the sea in the background

This island archipelago located in the Mediterranean is home to some of the most notorious party destinations on the planet. From the buzzing nightlife in Ibiza to the tiny town of Magaluf in Mallorca, the Balearic Islands are a treasure trove of beautiful seaside towns and resorts to set sail and party into the sunset.

Blue Lagoon, Malta

Situated on Comino, Malta’s tiniest inhabited island, is what is often referred to as the prettiest spot in the country, Blue Lagoon! This picturesque paradise is well-known for its stunning crystalline water which is perfect for a swim. Sail and celebrate the good times on a boat party in Blue Lagoon, and experience the very best of Malta.

Côte d’Azur, France

For a more upscale boat party sail to the French Riviera, a destination famous for attracting the wealthy elite, including celebrities. Because of its reputation for hosting some of the most extravagant parties and social gatherings in the world, Côte d’Azur provides the perfect setting for a glamorous boat party. Sail along the coast and visit iconic spots in Cannes, Nice and Monaco for a one-of-a-kind boat party.

For smaller gatherings, the pool deck bar seats eight – with another four pool seats – and can be set up for a DJ. Attending A Boat Party? Here’s The Dos & Don’ts You Don’t Want To Miss

' src=

If you have no idea what to wear to a boat or yacht party, check out this helpful guide for the best outfit ideas and tips on dress code.

If you tend to vacation around coastal towns, chances are that you will be invited to a boat party one weekend or another. Whether it’s a luxurious yacht soiree, a casual boat gathering, or a glamorous sailing affair, you’re in for a great time. But as you embark on this nautical adventure, one question looms large: What should you wear?

Dressing appropriately for such events requires a delicate balance between comfort, functionality, and, perhaps most importantly, style. With the shimmering sea as your backdrop, you want to look effortlessly chic without trying too hard. To help you navigate your boat or yacht party in style, we have curated this guide on what to wear to a boat or yacht party, ensuring you can make a grand entrance and set sail in style.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tamu McPherson (@tamumcpherson)

Key Factors To Consider

Before we embark on our recommendations about what to wear to a boat or yacht party, let’s discuss some practical key points you have to be aware of.

First and foremost, keep in mind the weather and location. If you’re heading out on a sunny day, opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics that will keep you cool and comfortable. Additionally, consider the possibility of wind – it’s wise to choose outfits that won’t easily get tangled in the breeze, and to take additional layers, like a light jacket, if you think you might get cold.

2. Your Itinerary

Next, take into account the specific activities you’ll be engaging in during the party. If there’s swimming involved, bring or wear appropriate swimwear underneath your outfit.

3. Time Of Day

If you are setting out in the heat of the day, it’s important to opt for breathable materials that will keep you cool in the summer sun. However, if you are setting out in the evening, you have more options.

What Should You Wear To a Boat or Yacht Party?

1. linen, cotton and tencel dresses.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by RANIA (@raniafawazz)

We highly recommend wearing lightweight clothes made from natural fibers like linen, tencel and cotton for your boat or yacht day trip. All of them are highly breathable, allowing air circulation and preventing you from feeling overheated in the sun or during energetic activities onboard.

In addition to this, they have great moisture-wicking properties, which means that any sweat or water on your clothes quickly evaporates, keeping you cool and dry.

While you can opt for any colors you want, light colors are especially popular in the heat of the sun, as well as nautical colors like light blue and navy, which echo the color scheme of open waters around you.

2. Comfortable Flat Shoes

As for footwear, opt for comfortable pair of slides, espadrilles, platform sandals or boat shoes. Flat shoes provide better balance and a more secure grip on the boat’s surface, reducing the risk of slips, especially if you’re setting out in windy conditions.

Moreover, they’re comfortable to wear for extended periods, making them ideal to wear on long boat parties with limited seating.

3. Wide Leg Pants

Wide-leg pants are our favorite bottoms to wear during the summer, and boat parties are no different.

These elegant pants can be dressed up with elegant tops and a designer party bag for a chic look, or more casually with your favorite bikini top, a crop top or a linen tank top. For ultimate comfort, stick to light colors and breathable materials like tencel, linen and rayon.

4. Tailored Shorts

Shorts have a habit of seeming a bit casual but they are perfect for boat-party evenings.

A boating atmosphere means there can be quite a lot of wind, and no one wants an embarrassing dress-caught-in-the-wind moment.

A pair of tailored shorts with a structured waistband can be paired with a blouse for a formal summer party or a fun embellished top for a sun-down soiree.

5. Figure-Hugging Long Dresses

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NEELAM KAUR GILL (@neelamkg)

For ultimate elegance, go for a figure-embracing maxi dress. Not only are they more practical than sorter dresses that may get down by the wind, but they’re also more glamorous as you glide along the deck.

While a voluminous flowy dress will look amazing blowing in the wind, it can get annoying very quickly. For daytime affairs, opt for a casual rib-knit dress, and for fancier yacht parties or black tie events, a long cocktail dress with more striking designs.

A classic button-down shirt is an unlikely option for a boat-party look but is the most versatile item of clothing you’ll have in your suitcase this summer.

Choose classic white or a pop of color and use your shirt as it was intended, as a swim cover-up, or to cover your shoulders in the breezy boat evenings.

Rompers are very chic and laid-back, making them one of the most perfect outfits to wear to a boat or yacht party. Plus, unlike with skirts and dresses, you don’t have to worry about the wind blowing up your hem.

Again, opt for breathable fabrics if you’re cruising in the sun, and for extra protection, consider rompers with long sleeves.

Like rompers, jumpsuits are a good choice to wear on a boat or a yacht, as they won’t get caught in the wind. Opt for loose and flowy designs that allow the wind to blow through your jumpsuit, cooling you down in the sweltering sun.

Pair them with sandals and a wide-brim hat for a casual sailing outfit, or dress them up with statement jewelry and wedges for a dinner party or evening soiree.

Other Essentials To Bring To A Boat Party

1. your swimsuit.

Firstly, it’s not a boat party without swimming! Don’t forget to bring your favorite bathing suit with you.

2. Suncream

It also pays to protect your skin from the sun, so pack your sunblock in your bag. A good sunblock should be at least SPF 30, since SPF 30 can block about 97% of the sun’s harmful UV rays. Make sure to reapply your suncream every 2 hours you spend in the sun for optimal protection.

3. Protective Accessories

It goes without saying, but don’t attend a boat party without a good pair of sunglasses . The sun is especially strong in the open sea as it reflects off of water, and you don’t want to spend your day squinting.

In addition to sunglasses, also consider bringing a stylish hat that protects your face and scalp. Whether you opt for a wide-brimmed hat, a floppy sun hat, a straw hat or a sporty cap, it serves as a barrier against the sun, reducing the risk of sunburn and discomfort.

4. Beach Towel

Some yachts and bigger boats will be equipped with beach towels for guests , but this is not a given. If you think you’ll be going in for a dip, pack a beach towel in your beach tote before you set off.

Now that we’ve gone over some of the best things to wear for yacht and boat parties, let’s also take a look at clothing to avoid.

What Not To Wear To A Boat Party

How you dress for a boat party is very different to what you wear on land. What looks good in a rooftop bar might not be appropriate for a yacht, so keep these things in mind when putting together your outfit:

1. High heels

Stilettos with a sharp heel are a bit of a hazard on a moving boat; not only are you less stable when wearing them, the heel itself can also get stuck in gaps or grates on the deck, which can damage your shoes.

To be on the safe side, opt for comfortable flat sandals, boat shoes, or espadrilles, or take your shoes off entirely!

If you’re attending a dressy occasion in the evening, consider wearing platform wedges that look polished but are easy to walk in.

2. Fabrics That Make You Sweat

Avoid fibers and materials like acrylic, polyester, denim, and spandex that will make you sweat, and silk, which has moisture-wicking properties, but will not hide sweat stains.

Instead, opt for breathable fibers like cotton, linen, rayon, viscose, jersey, chambray and tencel, especially if you’re attending a boat party during the daytime.

3. Skin Tight clothing (If you’re swimming)

If you know that you’ll be swimming, avoid wearing tight clothing, as there’s nothing more uncomfortable than having to put your tight clothes back on when you have wet skin. Also, what looks good dry might not look as great when it’s all soaked in water and sticking to your skin.

Opt for clothes that are loose enough that they won’t cling to you and that allow the wind’s breeze to flow through them. Alternatively, you can always bring a change of clothes if you have a tight outfit that you definitely want to wear on your boat ride.

We hope you found a few boat and yacht party outfit ideas that are perfect for your next boat trip, whether that’s on a luxury yacht or a more casual boat cruise. For more articles like this, make sure to check out the posts below.

What to Wear on a Catamaran – What You Should Bring!

Catamaran on the water

Sailing trips have emerged as an exciting and budget-friendly option for regular land vacations.

However, sailing trips are also unique and very different from land-based vacations in many important ways.

Therefore, it is important to plan carefully so that you are not left with regret in the middle of a picture-perfect sail.

One of the areas where a lot of novice sailors tend to go overboard is packing suitable clothes during their sailing trips.

I have been witness to chartering parties not only packing way more than what they would need aboard the boat but also packing the wrong kinds of clothes.

I cannot help but emphasize that a sailing trip is very different from other holidays as space is in short supply.

The mantra should always be to pack light and pack right. In this article, therefore, my aim shall be to educate novice sailors on what to wear on a catamaran .

Table of Contents

Catamaran is Different Than a Monohull.

There was a time when monohulls were the undisputed kings of the sailing industry on account of their unmatched sailing characteristics. Not anymore.

Boat designers have, over the years, improved and refined sailing cats so much that they can easily rival the best monohulls.

On the other hand, catamarans have a strong advantage when it comes to space and comfort.

You would have more and bigger cabins on a 40 feet catamaran when compared to a similar-sized monohull.

In addition, amateur sailors truly appreciate the stability of a sailing catamaran as it is not prone to pitching like monohulls.

In other words, if you are looking for a more relaxing sailing trip instead of a performance-driven sail, a catamaran is clearly the better option.

It would accommodate more of your friends and family, as well as offer them larger cabin spaces.

Sailing on a catamaran means that you can afford to pack a little more generously compared to a monohull and enjoy your evening wear in ample social spaces.

Sailboat on the water

What to Wear for A Short Trip?

A short trip aboard a catamaran can be either a day sail or a weekend trip. For day sails, of course, you do not need to pack anything at all except your sunscreen lotion.

Bikini on the sand

It is simply too short a trip to require you to change aboard the boat. Typically, you should look to dress casually.

Even on a weekend-long sailing trip, you should look to keep things extremely light.

Such sailing trips are long enough to require you to change but not long enough to warrant having your clothes washed.

Ideally, you should pack no more than one extra set of clothes.

If the trip does not involve any onshore trips, then you may get by with just an extra set of swimwear.

Depending on the weather forecast, you may also pack in a light water-resistant jacket to guard against wind chill and rain.

What to Bring for An Extended Trip

An extended sailing trip, on the other hand, one that lasts at least a week, requires you to carefully plan the clothes to pack.

A lot of the decisions about packing would greatly depend on the amenities available on the boat as well as the destination and expected weather.

Set of casual clothes

For example, if the chartered catamaran has a decent laundry facility onboard, then you may consider packing lightly.

Similarly, if your sailing trip also involves anchoring at popular coastal towns and visiting trendy bars, restaurants, and cafes, then you may consider packing in a skirt or trousers.

Other than that, you would be safe by packing light and casual wear.

Some people, especially ladies, are a little averse to having their underwear dried out in public. To get over this predicament, you can pack in a set of underwear for each day of your trip.

You would also need no more than 3-4 sets of bathing suits for the entire duration of your sail.

Always remember to pack in a light but effective jacket made of synthetic material for rainy and windy days.

Do I Need to Wear Shoes?

Flipflops on the sand

Most of the time, you would be walking around barefoot aboard the boat. However, boat shoes and flip-flops are obviously required on a sailing trip, especially if you would be making on-shore trips.

Make sure your boat shoes are light with a soft rubber sole.

Hard soles are not only unnecessary, but they may also scuff up the boat’s surface.

For those who are planning adventure activities on-shore during their trip, lightweight sports shoes would do nicely.

Do take care to make sure that your flip-flops provide a firm grip and are anti-slip.

What is Not Recommended to Wear?

Sailing trips are all about keeping things light and casual.

Its core philosophy is to get by with as little as possible. Therefore, anything that goes against this philosophy should be strictly avoided.

Jacket for the evening

For example, there is really no need to bring your expensive formal wear when you are leaving on a sailing trip.

Whether it is formal evening gowns for women or jackets for men, these clothes are best kept away from your packing list.

Similarly, formal shoes and high heels do not belong to a sailing vacation.

For men, it is suggested that they pack no more than a pair of jeans for their trip, as they are not only heavy but also unnecessary aboard the boat.

List of Recommended Wear

1) Clothing:

  • Casual dresses for women to throw over their swimsuits.
  • Ladies should also pack in tank tops and shorts.
  • Men should pack in nylon or synthetic and airy shirts and boating shorts .
  • Swimming suits for ladies.
  • Men should pack in swimming trunks.
  • In addition, women should pack in a pair of leggings for cold days.
  • A suitable number of underwear.
  • In addition, both men and women would need fast-drying towels .
  • A light nylon jacket would suffice for rainy days.

2) Footwear:

For an extended sailing trip, women would need to pack:

  • A pair of soft-soled sandals for trips ashore
  • A pair of boat shoes to wear on board the boat.
  • A pair of flip flops

3) Other accessories:

In addition to your normal toiletries, do not forget to pack in

  • Your favorite hairbrush
  • A quality pair of polarized sunglasses
  • A wide-brimmed hat or even a baseball cap
  • Plenty of sunscreens
  • A dry bag .

Additional tips

1) While a hairdryer is useful, you should consider not lugging it on your sail as it can really tax the batteries aboard your boat.

2) Do not pack your clothes in hard luggage. Make use of soft luggage such as duffel bags . They take up less space and do not risk causing scuff marks on the boat.

3) As far as possible, make sure the clothes you pack are made of fiber that not only keeps you comfortable but also dries fast.

4) Since you would be spending a lot of time on the water, you would likely partake in water-based activities. If you do not like the idea of using rental snorkel gear , make sure you pack one of your own.

By now, you should have a good idea about how important it is to pack light and pack right when it comes to sailing trips. Packing light also makes your trip more enjoyable as you focus more on the vacation rather than looking after your belongings. However, it is also important that you pack the right type of gear such as quality polarized sunglasses , fast-drying towels , etc.

Great article about something as simple as packing but is imperative for boating.

It is so true about limited space compared to a land trip and because of where you are going, the type and amount of clothing are different.

Excellent list break down to help keep it simple and to the point.

Yes, you are right, a land trip is totally different than an offshore trip. I always recommend packing light no matter what, just bring clothes accordingly to the destination and the weather.

Thank you for the comment and wish you a great day:)

Hi Daniella, What a fascinating read. I’ve been reading your “Best Anchorages In The Bahamas” bog too. You’ve got me in a holiday mood now. We travelled to Mallorca the other year and saw some stunning catamarans and my wife and I talked about having a catamaran holiday sometime. I’d go for the week but my wife thought a few days would be enough for her due to the lack of luggage she likes to take. haha!! Where would you suggest is the best around the Mediterranean for a Catamaran holiday as we both love the Mediterranean? Looking forward to your reply, Simon.

I am glad my articles got you in a holiday mood, this is the purpose of my website:)

Mallorca is absolutely beautiful, I was there with my husband and my two children about two years ago and we had such good times!

The most popular region for catamarans is the Caribbean and the BVI because of the amount of coral reefs, the shallow water, the culture, restaurants, and music.

In the Mediterranean, the most popular areas to sail are Greece and Croatia because the sailing conditions are excellent, the cuisine is absolutely delicious and there is an incredible amount of historical sights . What more can you ask for?

If you need more information, don’t hesitate to contact me, I’ll be very happy to help you:)

Thank you for the comment and wish you a wonderful day!

It amazes me that you mention the room on board a catamaran is so much more spacious than a monohull. On the face of it, your typical boat seems bigger. Maybe it’s just that I’ve seem smaller cat’s than what your talking about. Anyway, I can’t imagine bringing by formal ware onto any type of boat other than a cruise ship! Shorts & thongs for me! (yes, thongs as I’m an Aussie, not a thong as it’s known in the UK!!)

Well, if you compare a monohull and a cat at the same length, the catamaran is much bigger. No doubt about it:)

It is not unusual that people wear formal clothes on a boat, but only for special entertainments, and the boat has to be enough big in order to welcome a large amount of guest. While on a cruise ship you’ll have to wear formal clothes for dinner:)

Thank you for the comment and wish you a great day!

Thanks for the information! My husband and I decided that we deserve some unusual rest and he offered me to take a private catamaran tour which will be very romantic. Luckily I have boat shoes, but I did not know that hard soles may scuff up the boat surface. I will need to check if my shoes suit this kind of rest. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the tip to get boat shoes that are light with a soft rubber sole. My wife and I are thinking of going on catamaran tours, and we would like to have all the materials that we would need. Our current flip-flops are kind of slippery, so we’ll look for something that is more of an anti-slip.

You are very welcome; it’s a pleasure:) Yes, as I have mentioned in the article, it is crucial to wear comfortable shoes that grip well the deck as it usually quite slippy onboard. Some flip flops feature anti-slip soles and are incredibly comfortable. These are also great to wear on boats!

Thank you for the comment and wish you a fantastic day!

I like that you mention what’s proper when going on boating trips because my wife and I have never been on one so it’s useful information for us to keep in mind. I like that you point out the differences between a short trip and an extended trip. Our trip will be short, but maybe after this one, we’ll want to consider a longer trip. Thanks!

I am glad you found the article useful, thank you! I am sure your wife and you will enjoy the sailing trip very much:)

How To Dress for a Catamaran Cruise

As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. We may also earn commissions if you purchase products from other retailers after clicking on a link from our site.

Now that you have your catamaran cruise booked, you need to make sure your clothing choices suit the occasion. You want to look your best in the photos you share on social media and with your envious friends, but you also want to dress comfortably for a safe cruise. How do you dress for a catamaran cruise?

To dress for a catamaran cruise, ask about a dress code — is it “come as you are,” or black tie? For a casual cruise, wear jeans, sneakers, and a non-collared shirt. Formal cruises require tuxedos and evening gowns. Don’t forget to bring a straw hat and polarized sunglasses for UV protection.

Catamaran cruises offer a chance to relax and unwind. But before you go, there are a few things to learn about catamarans and cruising. You may be a lifelong landlubber, but after reading this article, you’ll be a stylish seadog.

Table of Contents

What Is a Catamaran?

At first glance, a catamaran looks like two boats with a house hanging atop them. Catamarans are broader and boxier than traditional ships. Their width makes them more stable than a single-hulled ship.

Nautical designers build racing catamarans for speed and cruising catamarans for comfort. Because they rock less than conventional boats, a catamaran ride causes much less sea sickness even in choppy waters.

Many charter captains rent their catamarans for cruises. They may take guests out for a dinner cruise that features great food and sunset over the waves. They could offer all-day excursions with fishing and swimming. Or they might set sail with their passengers for distant islands.

Whether you’re going for an afternoon ride in the harbor or a catamaran cruise around the world, you’ll want to look your best. But before you ask, “What should I wear?” you should find out if your cruise operator has any rules regarding what you cannot wear.

While many catamaran cruises have a “come as you are” attitude, some expect guests to dress for the occasion. At best, ignoring their dress codes will mark you as the person who showed up to a black-tie event in ripped jeans and a dirty T-shirt. At worst, they’ll turn you away at the dock.

When in doubt, err on the side of good taste. Cruises are special events. Dress to impress, and you’ll make your cruise more enjoyable for yourself and your fellow passengers.

Casual Wear on a Catamaran Cruise

Casual catamaran cruises are more about the scenery and the food than dressing up. Jeans, sneakers, and non-collared shirts are acceptable. Tank tops, flip-flops, and swimwear are frowned upon for hygienic and fashion reasons. And just because you can wear a T-shirt on a dinner cruise doesn’t mean that you should.

Boat shoes and leather sandals are more stylish than sneakers. Capris, sundresses, and knee-length skirts work well at a casual wear dinner cruise. Men will look comfortable and stylish in khakis, golf shirts, and button-up shirts.

This Berydress A-Line Midi Sundress with a lace shawl or cover-up will look casual without sloppy. And men can’t go wrong combining Calvin Klein Stretch Chino Pants with a Lacoste Polo Shirt .

Semi-Formal Catamaran Cruise Wear

There are many definitions of “semi-formal wear.” Perhaps the best way to approach a semi-formal cruise is to dress like you’re going to a wedding or a 5-star restaurant.

Flats or low chunky heels will be better suited to a cruise than higher heels. While catamarans heel (rock) much less than conventional boats, waves can still lead to a “rocking horse” motion as the dual hulls rise and fall on the swells. Low heels will be better for your balance. And spike or stiletto heels are right out, as they can cause expensive damage to the decks.

Combine this Haspel Poplin Sport Coat with these Perry Ellis Linen Pants and a button-down shirt for a look that’s both formal and relaxed. A white Julia Jordan Halter Jumpsuit will look fabulous combined with these blue FASZFSAF Flower Sandals .

Formal Wear Catamaran Cruise Events

When cruising, “formal wear” traditionally meant tuxedos and evening gowns. While some big cruise ships still hold formal events complete with tuxedo rental, the Titanic look has largely gone the way of the Titanic. (Many cruise guests are not happy with this situation).

Still, there may be times when you’ll need to break out the tie and tails or sport your designer best on a catamaran. Many travel-loving couples charter boats for their wedding ceremony . And when your catamaran docks, the yacht and harbor club may hold events where the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers look is de rigueur .

For an authentic vintage tuxedo look, check eBay’s wide selection of vintage tuxedos . Cruise ship formal wear for women generally works best with simple elegance combined with a showpiece accessory. And when you’re sailing, you’ll find elaborate hairdos hold up more poorly in salt breezes than basic but well-done styles.

England is famous both for its fashion industry and its sailing history. In this British GQ article, Harvey James explains the differences between white tie and black tie dress codes .

What Clothes Are Best for a Catamaran Cruise?

Whether you’re out for the day or weeks, there are traditional nautical fashions. These styles became popular because they both look good and meet guest and crew needs. What you bring when you set out is what you have until your catamaran docks.

Here are some pointers for packing or for picking the right outfit for your short catamaran cruise:

  • Navy blue , the color of the British Navy’s traditional officer coat, goes well with both neutrals and bright colors like red and yellow.
  • Pastels , especially pastel “sea greens” and sky blues, work with khakis, jeans, and white skirts.
  • White matches everything and will keep you cooler on a hot day. Lighter colors should predominate in your outfit.
  • Stripes: Stripes pop out against a solid-colored wardrobe. Striped crew necks (named after a style favored by rowers) are popular on yachts and at yacht clubs. This inexpensive Uxcell Striped Crew Neck T-Shirt comes in a wide range of colors and sizes.
  • Fabrics: Breathable cotton and linen make your catamaran cruise more comfortable. Dry clean only outfits that might sustain damage from sea spray or a sudden storm should be left onshore.

The following items may be handy on your catamaran cruise:

Those of us with thinning hair know all too well the heartache of the sunburnt scalp. A hat shields your face, head, neck, and eyes from harmful UV radiation and blinding light. When choosing a hat, look for a 3” to 5” (7.62 to 12.7-cm) brim around the cap. The best materials for sun protection are a very tight straw weave or a thick canvas.

Bucket hats originally protected Irish fishers and farmers from sun and drizzle. Bob Denver made bucket hats famous on the TV series Gilligan’s Island . A Zero Restriction Gore-Tex Bucket Hat will keep your head dry through a summer squall and ensure you have a better (if shorter) cruise than Gilligan and the Skipper.

Chilly ocean breezes can blow on even the warmest days. And when the sun sets, the air may soon go from balmy to brisk. That light jacket you thought you would never need in midsummer will leave you comfortable while the less-prepared shiver.

Windbreakers like the Under Armour Women’s ArmourStorm Sonar Waterproof Jacket or Under Armour Men’s Scrambler Jacket offer protection against cutting winds and sea spray. They’re also lightweight enough to be folded into a day bag when the sun comes out again.

If your catamaran is sailing in cooler weather, consider a fisherman’s sweater. This Biddy Murphy Aran Knit Sweater is made with soft, non-scratchy Merino wool and comes in various sizes and colors. Irish fishermen wear these while sailing the North Sea. They should keep you fashionable and warm when things get dreary and damp.

Clean, unripped jeans are acceptable for most cruises. But seersucker pants will be more breathable and look more upscale. If you’re going on a catamaran cruise, why not go that extra mile and wear a nice pair of Brooks Brothers Striped Seersucker Pants ?

Linen capri pants (also known as “clam diggers”) are a flattering option for women. These LinenMe Linen Clam Diggers will pair with just about anything in your wardrobe. They’re fetching, versatile, and can be used as part of many outfits after your catamaran cruise ends.

In 1934, Paul Sperry slipped on his sailboat and fell into the cold Long Island Sound waters. Sperry made it safely back to his boat, but the experience shook him. He resolved to create a shoe that would give him better traction when at sea.

The following winter Sperry noticed how easily his Cocker Spaniel, Prince, ran up icy Connecticut hills without slipping. Inspired by Prince’s rough paws, Sperry cut grooves into a pair of gum rubber soles and glued them to canvas sneakers.

Today Sperry’s rubber-soled shoes are still beloved by naval personnel who want to stay on the deck or, in nautical slang, “topside.” Sperry Top-Siders are comfortable and fashionable. And their white rubber soles don’t scuff or mar decks, which makes them very popular with yacht owners too!

If you want footwear for your cruise, you can’t go wrong with a pair of Sperry Top-Siders. These Sperry Men’s Mako 2-Hole Boat Shoes and Sperry Women’s Rosefish Boat Shoes will be stylish both on deck and dry land. And if any part of your cruise involves a walking tour, bring worn-in shoes to avoid blisters.

For men, button-downs like this Vivienne Westwood Poplin Orb Short-Sleeved Shirt and polo shirts like the Calvin Klein Men’s Quick Dry Polo are solid catamaran cruise options.

Button-downs and polo shirts also work for ladies on a catamaran cruise. This Agan Traders Women’s Boho Lace Bell Sleeve Blouse is Bohemian enough for a coffee house and sufficiently light for hot weather. The long sleeves will also help protect you from sunburn.

To cope with the hot, humid weather, early 20th century Bermuda businessmen began wearing trousers cut an inch above the knee. Much of the British Empire was tropical or subtropical, so Bermuda shorts became popular throughout Her Majesty’s realm.

Bermuda shorts are dressier than denim cut-offs but not so formal that you can’t pair them with a T-shirt. Island Trends Victoria Bermuda Shorts will look great with a brightly colored Cicy Bell Casual Blazer or with a Daily Ritual Oversized V-Neck Tunic . And there are few men’s yachting outfits more iconic than Bermuda shorts paired with a polo or golf shirt.

Sunlight glistening off the water can be dazzling, but a little goes a long way. If you’re out on the ocean, sunglasses are a must-have item. Along with a hat and sunscreen, sunglasses can be the difference between a pleasant cruise and a painful one.

Here are a few tips when selecting sunglasses for your catamaran cruise:

  • Be sure your sunglasses are polarized; non-polarized sunglasses will do little to keep out the light coming toward your eye from all directions.
  • Also, check to see that your sunglasses block out harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays.
  • Many sailors prefer gray or copper-colored lenses. These provide the best contrast when exploring the water for fish or obstacles.

These Costa Del Mar Men’s FERG Square Sunglasses and Costa Del Mar Women’s Gannet Rectangular Sunglasses will protect your eyes on a cruise or in any other overly bright situation.

Catamarans are great for ocean swimming. Their lower draft (depth below the water) means they can sail into harbors that would ground most conventional sailboats. And their stability makes them excellent platforms for climbing into and out of the water.

One-piece suits are versatile. Slip on a pair of Joe’s Jeans Bermuda Shorts or an R.Vivimos Cotton Floral Print Midi Skirt , and you’re ready to go from the ocean to a beachfront restaurant.

For cruises, many experts recommend bringing at least two swimsuits. That way, you can leave one out to dry and wear the other when you want to visit the hot tub or lounge on the deck. And rash guards like the Quiksilver Men’s All Time Ls Surfer Shirt or Land’s End Women’s Crew Neck Long Sleeve Rash Guard can save you from painful sunburn.

Packing Advice for a Long Catamaran Cruise

If you’re going on a multi-day catamaran cruise, you’ll want several changes of clothes on-hand. You want to bring your most flattering outfits, but don’t bring too many!

Pack Lightly for Your Cruise

The Hemisphere , one of the largest charter catamarans, is 145 feet (44.2 meters). Charter catamarans typically range between 45 and 70 feet (13.72 and 21.34 meters) long. The Symphony of the Seas , the largest cruise ship sailing today, is 1,128 feet (343.81 meters) long.

Next to a big cruise ship, cruising catamarans look positively puny! But Symphony carries over 5,500 people on a typical cruise along with a crew of 2,200. The Hemisphere has a staff of eight and can accommodate up to twelve passengers in four doubles and one twin cabin.

Catamarans have a rectangular deck that offers more space than a traditional boat of comparable length. This design gives passengers more room for walking about and for activities. Many of the largest catamarans have hot tubs and even pools! But storage space on a catamaran cruise will still be at a premium.

You should be able to fit your cruise wardrobe in one large or two small soft-sided bags or duffel bags which you can store away easily. Soft bags are easy to fold away once you unpack, taking up less room. Hard suitcases are more challenging to pack away and may even scratch and damage cabin woodwork.

This Gonex 150L Foldable Duffle Bag comes in various colors and will give you plenty of room to store your things.

Ask About Cruise Washing Facilities

Washing machines require lots of electricity and freshwater. They’re bulky and heavy. While cruising catamarans offer many luxuries, most don’t have onboard laundry facilities. That means you’ll probably need to wait until your catamaran docks to do your wash at a laundromat. Make sure you bring along enough clothes to tide you over between ports of call.

If all else fails, you can always use the time-honored sailing tradition of washing your clothes in soapy salt water, rinsing them in a bit of freshwater, then hanging them out to dry. The ocean breezes will dry your garments in no time and leave them smelling like the sea.

The Tangie Stain Remover Bar is small, but if you need to get a stain out while traveling between ports, it’ll be a big help.

Leave Your Expensive Jewelry at Home

Heirlooms and irreplaceable jewelry can easily get lost on a cruise. Expensive rings and necklaces may impress your cruise mates, but they’ll also draw the attention of thieves and ne’er-do-wells in port.

You should also avoid long necklaces on sailing catamarans. If your chain gets tangled in the rigging, it could break. And be careful near the railing. If your diamond bracelet falls into Davy Jones’ locker, Davy keeps it.

If you absolutely must bring expensive jewelry for a special night out, check to ensure that your cruise has a safe to store your irreplaceable heirlooms. Keep them safely stored away until you need them, then lock them back up until you return.

Final Thoughts

Now you know what to wear on a catamaran cruise. Catamarans are chic and often comfortable sailing in almost every sort of weather. With the pointers that you’ve learned from this essay, you can be fashionable and comfortable too! Happy (and stylish) sailing!

17 Things to Pack for a Week on a Catamaran (Helpful List)

Posted on May 25, 2022

If you’re like me, the first time I went to sea for several days, I had no clue what to pack beyond swimwear and sunblock. I’m like, do I need dress clothes for dinner, blankets, beauty supplies and the list(or lack of one) goes on. While you’re bound to have an amazing experience, don’t picture your last cruise vacation or resort stay in the Caribbean.

Turns out that I couldn’t even bring a suitcase, so all the ideas I had, or at least a large percentage of them, were ridiculous. First of all, packing for a cat cruise means bare essentials and having a list is key to not forgetting anything or overpacking.

A duffel bag is ideal for cat cruises because you can tuck them away. Your lightest clothing,(as few as possible) a light jacket, natural skincare and protection, insurance, charter contract, plastic bags, and more are among the essential items you’ll need. If you’re on a budget, take food items too, since eating at each stop can cut into your budget.

Here’s a helpful list of what to bring when going on a catamaran cruise for several days.

what to pack for a week on a catamaran

Personal Documents and Boat Paperwork

Do not leave home without the necessary paperwork for your boating trip, including your driver’s license and boat registration, and your passport if you’re traveling outside of the United States. Read up on the different types of boating licenses that exist.

Small Daily Bag

An emergency kit should contain the following items: an emergency wallet or purse that you can quickly take and go to; a cell phone; a passport; prescription medications; credit cards. Also, carry a written list of emergency contact names and phone numbers, your insurance policy number and number, and the names and phone numbers of your doctors.

Duffel Bag (no suitcase)

duffel bag

First and foremost, keep in mind that catamaran storage space is typically limited, so bring only one large or two compact soft-sided bags or backpacks that can be easily folded away.

Make sure you pack lightly and only bring duffel bags, which are easy to store.

Putting hard baggage into closets and cabinets is more challenging. In addition, they are hard to store or might potentially scrape or harm the wood.

Skin Protection

This one should be self-explanatory. Pack more sunblock than you think you may need. Non-oil-based sunscreens should be used to protect the upholstery and woodwork of your yacht. Insect repellant and sun protection lip balm are also advised.

Sunglasses & Goggles

Passengers should wear sunglasses, but drivers should always wear them. When you’re out on the water, the reflection of the sun’s rays might make it difficult to see. The eyes of a boat operator are protected from splashing water by sunglasses as well.

UV-protected Polaroid sunglasses can help keep your iris open wider and improve your vision by reducing the amount of reflected light that enters your eyes.

When the weather is very terrible, some sailors swear by keeping goggles on board for protection from rain but without tinted lenses.

Resealable Plastic Bags

resealable plastic bags

When going to the beach for the day, ziplock or dry bags come in handy for more than simply keeping cash and devices dry. If you have opened snack packages that need to be sealed, Ziplock bags are an excellent solution. Ziploc bags can be used for a wide range of purposes on any type of trip.

Medicines for Motion Sickness & Prescriptions

Bringing motion sickness or anti-nausea medication is a good idea if you’re vulnerable to seasickness, which is common no matter how much you go sailing. Always have plenty of your prescription drugs with you when traveling for an extended period.

Medical Kit

first aid kit

Before embarking on a trip, ensure sure your airtight or weatherproof first aid box is properly equipped with the obvious ones like gauze and band-aids. In addition, you’ll want to stock up on things like flares, matches, a waterproof flashlight, and fire extinguishers.

Make sure you have an extra flashlight on board, one that isn’t part of the first aid box. Hands-free map reading, as well as engine bay inspections, are even more convenient with a headband light. Spare batteries should always be present.

Electronics and Entertainment

There’s the iPod, the E-reader, and so on. All the things that can keep you relaxed or entertained during the downtime.

It is always better to bring your DVDs or CDs than to rely on streaming services because they are more reliable and don’t necessitate the use of specialized equipment that needs to be recharged.

Pack the tablets and cell phones too, as most vessels have charging ports. Keep in mind a few novels and periodicals in addition to games, decks of cards, and a few writing instruments. Birdwatching binoculars and cameras might also come in handy.

Flotation Devices

There should be adequate personal flotation devices (PFDs) for everybody on board in the correct sizes. Everybody on board should be made aware of the location of the personal flotation devices (PFDs).

catamaran hat

Carry many hats to shield your head from the sun, wind, and rain. Keep your head and neck warm in the winter with a microfibre cap, and keep your head cool in the summer with an oversized hat. Also, you might lose it to the wind, so we recommend at least three.

Light Clothes

Onboard a catamaran vessel, light summer attire is suggested, like swimsuits, lightweight t-shirts, skirts, plus shorts.

As a result, it’s pleasant and sunny throughout the day but might get chilly at night, necessitating the wearing of a sweater or light jacket while sailing.

We suggest taking a few extra pieces of clothing, such as backup shoes and a second swimming suit, to avoid overpacking. Being prepared for the possibility that things will get wet on a boat means that you’ll be more comfortable in the water.

Gear for Inclement  Weather

raincoat

You’ll need more than a hat while it’s raining. When going on a long boat journey, make sure to pack a raincoat as well as bib-pants, thick socks, plus appropriate sea boots. Carry synthetic pieces, such as thermal underwear as well as a neck warmer, regardless of the weather. This will ensure a more comfortable experience.

Gloves are essential if you plan on sailing and handling ropes, which can cause blisters and rope burns. To protect your hands when working with sails, halyards, and anchoring rides, you should wear full-length sailing gloves.

EPIRB/Locator

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to get in touch with the authorities, a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) or EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) can help. Personal EPIRBs can be purchased if desired to supplement your yacht’s EPIRP.

Strobe lights are offered on some of these gadgets, which can be quite helpful if a person falls overboard.

Portable GPS device

As a backup to the captain or for day-hiking on land, a portable Gps device might be useful.

Ensure the galley is filled with enough food for the course of your expedition, sufficient to get you to the port if you insist on hunting your daily meal each day.

Don’t Forget the Shoe Rules When Going on a Cat Cruise?

tennis shoes

While on board, we ask our passengers to adhere to the bare feet guidelines. It’s best to wear tennis shoes or a pair of white rubber-soled sandals when on the deck.

However, stiletto heels can harm the wood flooring while black-soled shoes can create unattractive scars, earning them an automatic no. If you’re going ashore, don’t forget to remove your land shoes when you return to the ship.

Never Go to Sea Without a Knife

Consider wearing a lanyard-attached knife and marlinspike for added security and portability. The marlinspike can be used to force open threads of rope for splicing with the knife.

Three-inch folding knives with marlin spikes function in crises. However, straight blade rigging knives with their sheath and marlinspikes are preferable.

How to Pack for Children on a Cat Cruise

how to pack for children on a cat cruise

We recommend that you bring everything you’ll need for your infants, including:

  • Bottles
  • Their favorite toys

To avoid damaging the boat, do not bring pens, or small toy pieces. Someone could step on them and get seriously injured from falling. Also, pack:

  • Backpack,
  • Sunglasses,
  • Beach sandals,
  • Children’s sunscreen,
  • UV-protection swimming suit,
  • Goggles, and
  • Bug repellent

All these items you may wish to include in a small bag for the children.

Catamaran Essentials to Keep Onboard

When you initially buy your Catamaran, you only need to pack a few things into it. They consist of:

  • Bath towels,
  • Beach towels, and
  • Kitchen utensils
  • Cleaning supplies including a vacuum
  • First aid kit

Anything personal item that helps you survive daily must always go on a trip with you. Otherwise, once you get to most ports, you’ll get the things you need but they won’t be cheap. This is particularly the case in popular tourist towns. Enjoy!
