25m yacht Miss Dunia "completely destroyed" by fire

A 25 metre superyacht named Miss Dunia has been left completely destroyed after a fire broke out on board, according to reports.

The yacht was moored at Popes Islands Fleet Marina in New Bedford, Massachusetts when the fire broke out, with emergency services called at around 5.30pm on Monday, August 30.

Images and video of the yacht consumed by fire were broadcast by local news stations, with flames and black smoke seen from the air.

The incident was attended by the US Coast Guard, as well as the New Bedford and Fairhaven fire departments, with no pollution or injuries reported at the time.

It was also reported that the yacht had 500 gallons of fuel on board, which presented challenges for the firefighters.

It is not yet known if anyone was on board at the time the fire broke out. An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.

Cleanup and investigation begin in Miss Dunia luxury yacht fire in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD — State and local officials were on the scene at Pope’s Island Tuesday after a devastating fire consumed a multi-million-dollar luxury yacht the day before at Fleet Marina. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, however Timothy Cox, Fairhaven harbormaster, said he was told there was a dinner party aboard the 82-foot yacht, Miss Dunia, before the fire broke out.  

On Tuesday morning, officials on scene were containing pollutants such fuel and firefighting foam from the burned-out yacht. Petty Officer Colt Cotten, a U.S. Coast Guard pollution responder, flew a drone over the scene and said the sheen from fuel had spread about 700 feet.

Crews were working on containment and considering placing a second boom ring around one already there. Cotten said the goal was to keep the impact as small as possible, putting it in perspective by stating a cup of diesel fuel can spread multiple miles. 

Lt. Lionel Tetreault, a New Bedford fire inspector, called the fire “severe” and in addition to containing the fuel spill, he said crews would be working on pulling the vessel from the water.  

The vessel will likely be taken to the Fairhaven shipyard, Cox said.  

Frank Corp. Environmental Services and Tucker-Roy Marine Towing and Salvage Inc. are working the cleanup and salvage end of the operation, he said.   

New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger told WCVB news that the first call came in just after 5 p.m. with someone reporting smoke coming from the boat. By the time crews arrived at the scene, a fire had broken out below the deck. 

The fiberglass construction of the yacht made for a long-burning fire that could be smelled from area towns, fire officials said.  

Estimates from New Bedford fire officials was that the yacht was carrying approximately 300 to 500 gallons of fuel. Crews had to use water and foam to douse the flames.  

Kruger said the fire went to a second alarm and multiple crews from surrounding communities, including Fairhaven, responded to assist the New Bedford Fire Department, along with the U.S. Coast Guard.   

“Everybody got off safe, so that’s a big plus,” said Dan Pacheco, dockmaster of Fleet Marina. Miss Dunia's   home port is in Florida, but the yacht had been here for about three weeks, he noted. The yacht is owned by Lars Vinjerud II, who also owns Fleet Marina.

Vinjerud II and Fleet Marina made news in 2019 with its new and unique looking fishing vessel Viking Power.  

Vinjerud II could not be reached for comment Tuesday morning. 

Fire destroys 82-foot yacht at Pope’s Island Marina

The 82-foot luxury motor yacht, Miss Dunia, was completely destroyed by fire on Monday, 8/30/21, as it floated in its dock space at Fleet Marina on Pope’s Island in New Bedford Harbor. There were no injuries.

New Bedford and Fairhaven Fire Departments responded at 5:18 p.m. By the end of it, assets from Dartmouth, USCG, Tow Boat US, Swansea, Berkley, and Providence were also put into action. Five engines and two ladder companies arrived on scene.

Flames shot out from the 92-ton vessel, and smoke was so heavy that Route 6 at the Fairhaven bridge was closed to traffic.  

As of press time, no cause of the fire had been released. Officials were investigating if anyone was on board when the fire started.

Complicating matters were the 500 gallons of fuel on board, which caused the fire to burn for hours. Firefighters used foam to because of the fuel, and had to call for additional foam from mutual aid departments.

The boat is owned by Lars Vinjerud II, who owns Fleet Marina, a fleet of fishing boats, and the restaurants Fathoms and the Ice House.  

In a post on Facebook, the New Bedford Fire Department stated: “Upon arrival crews observed a smoke extending from the 82’ yacht Miss Dunia. Two crews descended below deck with a handline and began extinguishment while two additional fire crews began checking for additional fire and began ventilation. Conditions deteriorated in a short amount of time as the fire had extended throughout the vessel.  

“Fire crews began exterior opera­tions with the assistance of boats from the Fairhaven Fire Department, Dartmouth Fire District 1, Fairhaven Harbormaster, and the New Bedford Police Department. Tow Boat USA also assisted on scene.”

According to online resources, the multi-million dollar M/Y Miss Dunia is 82 feet long, weighs 92 tons, and can sleep up to six guests comfortably, along with three crew members.

‘Smoke started coming out of the walls,’ says owner of yacht that caught fire in New Bedford

Lars Vinjerud II and 14 other people were gathered on the Miss Dunia for a dinner party when smoke began seeping from the walls of the 82-foot yacht docked at Fleet Marina in New Bedford Monday.

“It smelled like wires burning,” Vinjerud said Tuesday. “We tried to look around, but it was in the walls. Called 911 and got everybody off the boat.”

He and others tried to determine the source of the smoke but were forced away by the fumes.

“The smell was horrible,” Vinjerud said. “Toxic.”

Vinjerud, who owns the yacht and the marina, could only watch as smoke became open flames, causing extensive damage.

“It wasn’t easy” to be a spectator then, Vinjerud said.

It does not appear the fire was set intentionally, investigators said. “At this time, there is no evidence of foul play,” said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the state fire marshal’s office.

New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger said investigators won’t be able to determine what caused the fire until the boat is removed from the water.

Once “fiberglass melts down, it makes things difficult to try and excavate that and get a good point of origin” for the fire, he said. Investigators are interviewing witnesses and examining the scene, he said.

Vinjerud said the yacht’s charred hulk will be moved to a Fairhaven shipyard on Wednesday. The vessel is likely beyond repair, he said.

“Yeah, it’s done,” Vinjerud said.

Vinjerud is financially and legally responsible for the environmental impact of the fire on New Bedford’s harbor, according to Ed Coletta, a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection. The DEP, which sent its emergency response team to the scene Monday and Tuesday, said that about 500 gallons of diesel fuel and a much smaller amount of engine oil were on the boat at the time of the fire. It was not clear how much fuel spilled into the harbor.

“At the scene, our responders saw that the fire had caused the release of fuel product to the water surface there, but it was largely captured with containment booms set up around the boat,’' Coletta said by e-mail. “Once the boat is removed, additional absorbent materials and possibly a vacuum truck will be used to remove as much of the fuel product from the water surface as possible.”

The yacht was built in 2007 by Horizon in Taiwan, according to YachtCharterFleet.com , a leading resource on high-end boats and yachts.

“Previously named Barbara Lynn, her elegant exterior and interior styling are the work of Horizon, who is also responsible for her engineering,” the website states. “Miss Dunia’s interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 6 guests overnight in 3 cabins, comprising a master suite, 1 double cabin and 1 twin cabin. She is also capable of carrying up to 3 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.”

Vinjerud, who has strong family and financial ties to New Bedford and Fairhaven, said he had sailed the Miss Dunia from Florida, where he winters, to New Bedford the past several years. Counting family and friends, eight people were living on the boat — until Monday.

“We live in Florida. When we come up here we stay on the boat, we summer up here,” he said. “Everybody’s still in shock. We lost everything, like a house going up.”

Vinjerud, who said he has insurance for the yacht, said he has a home in Fairhaven to move to now that his dockside home is no more.

“I feel like I just went through a 15-round boxing match,” he said. “We haven’t slept.”
