Lagoon 420 Review – The Taste of Sailing!
A catamaran for experienced and new sailors alike is the Lagoon 420. This two-hulled, approximately 42-foot sailboat-propelled charter yacht is perfect for a small family sailing vacation or if you want to take off sailing all alone. With its ease of maneuvering across the water, you will find true enjoyment chartering on a Lagoon 420.
Table of Contents
Build your Sailing Confidence!
As your first charter yacht, the Lagoon 420 is a good choice to build up your sailing confidence. When traveling by sails, the two-hull design resists heeling.
If you choose to use the twin engines, this will allow the vessel to make tighter turns. With the sail and stout beam layout, you will have the ability to pick up and begin your voyage without fuss.
The Lagoon 420 handles easily with 1 person controlling the lines at the helm, so there is no need for a crew.
Sailing In comfort
However, the catamaran is not only easy to sail but is also a luxurious yacht to enjoy comfort while you sail. The Lagoon 420 has dual hulls with symmetrical cabins housing 2 cabins each and provides sleeping accommodations for 8 guests.
Designed with oversize hull windows for scenic viewing and a comfortably sized shower with a separate washroom to use after sunbathing. This catamaran is also designed with substantial lockers to store your gear and personal items.
The spacious galley and dining /lounge area are amply lit for nighttime dining and entertainment. And you will experience quiet sailing during overnight traveling with the Lagoon 420 design with the engines away from the sleeping quarters.
Designed for Pleasure
Designed with not only your comfort but also your entertaining pleasure in mind, the Lagoon 420 has a deck table surrounded by a U-shaped bench-style seating and columns of stainless steel to support a shelter from the beams of the sun.
For your convenience while entertaining, the yacht is supplied with a BBQ, stereo system with a CD player, and FM/AM stations and speakers built into the cockpit.
The vessel is also equipped with a large generator allowing you to keep all of your electrical devices well-charged while you enjoy your sailing holidays.
Unfortunately, the generator is a bit loud, but compared to the sound of running engines during the night, it is tolerable.
How Easy is it for the Sailor?
The deckhouse for the captain on the vessel is built on the bulkhead, and the platform is raised for clear viewing.
Upon entering the cockpit, you will find a GPS, chartering destination screens, and other systems designed to make nautical driving effortless.
Seventeen-inch propellers combined with an 8-kilowatt motor provide thrust allowing for steady travel across water.
The propeller system has an added feature, so its job is not only propelling the boat across the water. They are also used to charge the vessels’ batteries generating electricity while they spin.
All systems and controls are electronically activated, allowing the captain of the Lagoon 420 to work the controls for the sails with ease and little effort.
Keeping in mind the comfort of all on board, the captain can also enjoy the trip by selecting the option available to control the vessel with a remote control autopilot system for worry-free travel.
With the sails connected to electronic heeling, the Lagoon 420 can sail across the water, allowing for smooth and fast travel to your island destination.
Perfect for a Family holiday
The vessel is perfect for a family holiday of sailing relaxation. When at a port or your favorite beach, the catamaran is also equipped with a dinghy for going ashore.
The electronic controls make navigation simple and as well as furling and unfurling the masts, making hiring a crew unnecessary for even the first-time sailor.
Choosing to charter the Lagoon 420 is, without a doubt, one of the best options to fulfill all of the sailing adventures!

Quick Look: Lagoon 420 Hybrid
- By Jeremy McGeary
- Updated: January 31, 2007
By introducing the Lagoon 420 Hybrid, the first series-produced sailboat with diesel-electric drives as standard equipment, Lagoon Catamarans makes a bold statement about its view of the future of sailboat auxiliary propulsion. A generator in a compartment at bridgedeck level meets all of the electrical needs-both propulsion and DC house service. No diesels are under the aft beds. When motoring, the sensation of silent power is striking, and acceleration is instant. Under one 8-kilowatt motor (the other had a software problem while we were aboard), the Lagoon 420 quickly reached 6 knots, and the only sound came from the swirl of the prop.
The massively powerful propellers, which are 17 inches in diameter, convert the 8-kilowatt motors’ output into thrust and also spin to generate electricity for charging their batteries when sailing at 7 knots or better; however, this does reduce speed in light air. An optional reaching sail can be set on a short sprit when off the wind to boost speed and power regeneration.
In other respects, the 420 is classic Lagoon, with its gullwing bridgedeck and deckhouse with vertical windows enclosing a comfortable, well-lit lounge/dining area and galley. The starboard hull has two cabins, each with a queen-size berth and head and separate shower. The port hull is offered as a mirror of the starboard layout or as an owner’s suite with berth, settee, desk, and a large head forward.
In the cockpit, all sail controls-halyards, sheets, and reefing lines-lead to the helm, which is elevated on its own platform at the starboard side of the deckhouse bulkhead. To port, U-shaped bench seating surrounds a table. The entire area lies under the shelter of a rigid roof, supported by four stainless-steel columns.

Never shy to develop innovative ideas, this year Lagoon is introducing the new Lagoon 420 with an energy efficient diesel- electric propulsion system. The big cat comes with either three or four sleeping cabins and separate heads. The owner’s version, which will appeal to many cruisers, has a study or office in the starboard hull.
The saloon is huge and has a big galley, a useful chart table and a dinette that will seat eight. The saloon opens onto the back porch where the crew will doubtless spend most of their time while cruising.
The 420 is designed to be simple to sail. The main sheet leads right to the helmsman and the genoa sheets can be trimmed from either side of the cockpit. The main is a large, high roach full-battened sail that will drive the boat well. The genoa, fitted on a roller-furling system, can be reefed or furled from the cockpit.
The significant innovation in the new Lagoon 420 is the hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system. Lagoon has been refining this system for two years and has had a test system aboard a cat in the Caribbean for over a year that is being managed by the Catamaran Company.
The propulsion system depends upon two high power electric motors that draw energy from the large battery bank. When the battery bank begins to lose amperage, the diesel generator automatically starts and provides the amps the motors require. This system is remarkably efficient. The electric motors are virtually main- tenance free over many thousands of hours of use. The single generator replaces two diesel auxiliary engines so engine headaches are reduced. Moreover, because generators run at constant rpms and constant loads, the engines can operate for many thousands of hours before any major maintenance will be required. A generator runs more quietly than auxiliary engines and uses less fuel.
This is the hybrid power system of the future, and Lagoon and the Catamaran Company are paving the way.
The new Lagoon 420 will make a commodious floating home that can cross oceans and will take her crew in deep waters and shoal with style – and very little diesel.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River
A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.
Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.
Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.
An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.
The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.
The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.
The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.
Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.
The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.
Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

Check out Moscow’s NEW electric river trams (PHOTOS)
Water transportation has become another sector for the eco-friendly improvements the Moscow government is implementing. And it means business. On July 15, 2021, on the dock of Moscow’s ‘Zaryadye’ park, mayor Sergey Sobyanin was shown the first model of the upcoming river cruise boat.
The model of the electrical boat with panoramic windows measures 22 meters in length. The river tram - as Muscovites call them - has a passenger capacity of 42, including two disabled seats. The trams will also get cutting edge info panels, USB docking stations, Wi-Fi, spaces for scooters and bicycles, as well as chairs and desks for working on the go. The boats will be available all year round, according to ‘Mosgortrans’, the regional transport agency.
Passengers will be able to pay with their ‘Troika’ public transport card, credit cards or bank cards.
The main clientele targeted are people living in Moscow’s river districts - the upcoming trams will shorten their travel time in comparison to buses and other transportation by five times, Mosgortrans stated.
As the river trams are being rolled out, Moscow docks will also see mini-stations, some of which will also be outfitted with charging docks for speed-charging the boats.
Moscow is set to announce the start of the tender for construction and supply in September 2021. The first trams are scheduled to launch in June 2022 on two routes - from Kievskaya Station, through Moscow City, into Fili; and from ZIL to Pechatniki.
“Two full-scale routes will be created in 2022-2023, serviced by 20 river trams and a number of river stations. We’ll continue to develop them further if they prove to be popular with the citizens,” the Moscow mayor said .
