Best Full Size Cruiser Under 50 Feet

  • By Story by Herb McCormick, Photos by Billy Black
  • Updated: December 9, 2015

The X Factor: Fast, Fun Cruising

Perhaps no category in the 2016 BOTY field was as beguiling as this four-boat class of yachts ranging in size from 45 to 49 feet, and in price from $525,000 to over a million dollars. Two entries, the Hallberg-Rassy MKIII and Oyster 475 , were from long-established builders with deeply loyal followers. Another, the Azuree 46 , was from a fresh BOTY player entering a highly contemporary yacht. The fourth, the Xc 45 , came from a company long revered for its racing boats, now establishing an impressive presence among cruising sailors.

Of this quartet, the Azuree 46 was the least expensive, but it also boasts a fine pedigree: Renowned English naval architect Rob Humphreys is the designer, and one of the company’s principals was for many years a key member of another fine British institution, the Camper & Nicholsons yard. The Azuree is manufactured in Turkey, a nation with a long-standing boatbuilding tradition. “Azuree has made some big investments in CNC machines and is able to do a lot of high-tech production,” said Tim Murphy.

“The Azuree 46 is very sleek, with twin rudders and other go-fast features,” noted Alvah Simon.

Still, it was a far different boat, from Sweden, that impressed the judges with its notable sailing ability, particularly in light air. “The Hallberg-Rassy Mk III exhibits a high build quality in many ways,” said Murphy. “It employs vinylester resin in the laminate, ensuring true osmosis protection. They’re also using Divinycell closed-cell foam in the core, which helps explain how this ample cruising boat did perform so well. They’ve succeeded in keeping excess weight out of it.”

Coincidentally, Rob Humphreys was responsible for a second fine yacht in this category, the Oyster 475 .

“What I’ve loved about Oysters from the beginning is that they seem to be true seamen’s boats,” said Simon, seconding that notion on the 475. “Every time I look for a safety feature, there’s a padeye here, a jackline there, a handhold where I need one, a little higher lifeline. They have a lot of standard equipment that comes with the boat, which I appreciate.”

Yes, the judges felt an affinity for certain features in each boat in this division. But the panel also felt that everything really came together in the nominee from Denmark, which is why they unanimously recognized the Xc 45 as 2016’s Best Full-Size Cruiser Under 50 Feet .

“This was interesting because in the past, we thought of X-Yachts as very racing- or performance-oriented,” said Murphy. “But the lowercase ‘c’ refers to ‘cruising’ and is really meaningful, as they’re doing something very different from what they usually do. Their goal was to create a long-range cruising boat, so they built in the volume in the hull for the tankage and storage you need for the long haul. But they’ve also preserved one of their landmark techniques, which is a steel grid in the heart of the boat with everything like chainplate loads attached to it. So you’ve got a very strong, stiff boat that also sails well. It’s sort of the best of both worlds.” “This one was a surprise to me,” noted Sherman.

“At least in my experience with X-Yachts, this is their first serious attempt at creating a nice, dedicated cruising boat,” he said. “And I think they did a great job with it.”

50 foot yacht: guide to buying new and used boats.

  • January 13, 2019

Boat owners will often move into the 50 foot yacht range when looking to do more than simple day boating excursions. While still typically owner-operated, a 50 foot yacht provides increased flexibility with regards to living spaces and can offer a wide array of amenities that suite your tastes and needs while on the water.

When moving from a vessel in the 40 foot range up to the 50 foot range, owners can begin expecting three stateroom layouts. Moreover, newer products such as the Carver C52 offer full beam master bedrooms which provides luxurious space while resting at sea. Once an owner experiences the full beam master bedroom, it’s difficult to go back!

50 foot yacht

Also of note to existing and future owners of 50 foot yacht vessels, Sea Ray announced  in 2018 that they will no longer be producing sport yacht and yacht models above 40 feet. The announcement means that a large brand is exiting this particular space. Boaters looking for a new yacht in this class, however, still have a number of excellent options as other manufacturers and brands have responded with increased investment in current and future models.

If you’re considering purchasing a new or used boat, there are a few things you might consider as you narrow your options. First, what type of boating do you intend to do? This will provide some helpful direction towards the type of yacht you’ll require. How much time do you plan to spend on the boat? How many people do you plan to take with you, and how many will need to be sleeping aboard the boat? How important is speed and do you have any size restrictions based on where you plan to keep your boat?

Having an idea regarding how much you want to spend on your yacht will also help the process. As you consider the financial components of the purchase, don’t forget to consider the costs associated with care and maintenance. Not only are these important elements of owning and operating a yacht, they will also pay off down the road during a re-sale process.

Choosing between a new and used yacht is also a major consideration. While a used vessel will cost less, buying new means you can have access to the latest technology and amenities while also making specific selections tailored to your tastes and desires.

If you are a first time owner, a few other things to keep in mind before purchasing are: Where do you plan to keep the boat? You’ll want this lined up prior to finalizing a purchase. Additionally, do you have insurance? Make sure you have insurance coverage finalized before taking possession of the boat (if you’re financing the boat, this is required).

These are some of the initial questions and considerations to think through when planning your next purchase. A TGYG professional can help guide you through additional questions to further narrow down the best options and help ensure you’re purchasing the right yacht for you and your family.

Oceanis 40.1 Wins Best Cruising Boat Under 50 Feet [2021]

The beneteau oceanis 40.1 won best boat by sail magazine ..

The Oceanis 40.1 is an exciting new boat designed for comfort and speed. She’s versatile, sleek, and surprisingly spacious — perfect for a sailing couple or family. Despite the pandemic, SAIL Magazine made an effort to conduct and announce its annual Best Boat list for 2021. Among a sea of worthy competitors, the Oceanis 40.1 won “ Best Cruising Boat Monohull Under 50 Feet .” SAIL Magazine described it as, “a true sailor’s boat that just happens to also have a drop-dead gorgeous interior as well.” Let’s dive into what makes this award-winning boat so special.

best motor yachts under 50 feet

The innovative flared hull design of the Oceanis 40.1 has excellent speed potential during a poised and comfortable ride. This sailboat is available in different layouts, drafts, and rig options to accommodate sailors while also satisfying the need for comfort and pleasure underway. According to SAIL Magazine , the judging panel appreciated the boat’s fine sailing qualities when the wind kicked up, including easy motion, maneuverability, and superior tracking ability.

The judges also complimented the sailboat’s cockpit ergonomics. Two, long L-shaped benches face each other and are unobstructed as the halyard winches and mainsail sheets are on the coachroof. A deluxe table and plenty of seating create a peaceful setting for lunch on the water. The OC 40.1 has a large boat platform with an intermediate step to make entering and exiting the cockpit comfortable and safe for all ages. This detail also makes it easy to get into and out of the water when the boat is anchored.

best motor yachts under 50 feet

A feature that really impressed the judges was the interior space on the OC 40.1 , which is filled with impressive features that upgrade standard living arrangements on sailboats. This is the only boat in her size range with a clear path from the companionway to the forward stateroom. This boat comes standard with a 2 cabin, 1 head layout, but it can be adjusted to 4 cabins and 2 heads to offer extra space for families. The judges noted the convenience of the unfinished workshop area under the port cockpit seat and the spaciousness of the forward and starboard aft cabin. It’s an overall comfortable layout when you’re at sea.

The judges for SAIL Magazine concluded that The Oceanis 40.1 is an outstanding boat in the truest sense of the word — comfortable, great for entertaining, and a lot of fun to sail. It’s an ideal sailboat for families, couples, or friends as it offers a surprising amount of space on deck and below deck. The Oceanis 40.1 is adaptable to fit your cruising needs and is currently for sale with Denison Yachting. Ready to own an award-winning boat? The Power Catamaran Compilation

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: December 21, 2018

Power Catamarans have been growing leaps and bounds in popularity, and, in lengths and widths. And for good reason. These cruise-centric yachts offer homelike livability for avid travelers, are fuel efficient and are fairly intuitive to run. Power cats are popular in the bareboat charter market too, for these very reasons.

Here, we take a look at 12 catamarans ranging from a cruising-couple-size 36-footer to a 78-footer for friends, family and some more friends. And there are myriad power options: outboards, diesel inboards, hybrid or even all-solar power.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

fountain pajot my44

The Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent-Yachts 55

The ideas about which solar panels, electric motors, inverters and the like to use — and more importantly, Michael Köhler says, how to configure them — became the basis for the brand Silent-Yachts. The company offers 55-, 64- and 79-foot catamarans that run on solar-electric propulsion. The Silent 55 premiered this fall, and the 64 is sold out for the next two years, Köhler says.

Horizon PC74

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the Horizon PC74 is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

aquila 36

The Aquila 36 is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon Seventy 8

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC60

horizon pc60

To understand the Horizon PC60 power catamaran , you need to put aside preconceived notions about midsize yacht amenities. For example, main-deck master suites are the province of yachts over 100 feet length overall. Incorrect. This 60-footer has an elegant and spacious owner’s stateroom on the same level as the salon. If you want a 14-foot center console tender on a 60-foot yacht, you have to tow it. Wrong again. On the PC60, you hoist it onto the upper deck, no problem.

40 Open Sunreef Power

40 Open Sunreef Power

Sunreef is known for pushing the boundaries of catamaran design, incorporating four adjustable hydrofoils into a twin-hulled speedboat.

The Polish builder is one of several European builders (including Evo, Fjord, Wider and Wally) transforming the open day-boat category with creative designs. Beyond its hydrofoils, the 40 Open Sunreef Power ‘s cockpit has side “wings” along the aft gunwales that fold out at anchor, widening the beam from 17 feet to 22 feet 9 inches.

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the Lagoon 630 MY burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY 37

Fountaine Pajot MY 37

The Fountaine Pajot MY 37 easily accommodates the seafaring family with three- and four-stateroom options. In the three-cabin version, called Maestro, you’ll find an owner’s suite in the portside hull with a queen-size berth and en suite head. Two double-berth cabins and one more head are available for the kids. If your brood is bigger, the Quator setup features four double cabins with two heads.

The 37 is a traveler and can be powered with twin 150 hp or 220 hp Volvo Penta diesels. Top speed with the smaller engines is 17 knots, while it’s 20 knots with the bigger power plants. Interestingly, at 7 knots, the fuel consumption is the same, with either set of motors offering voyagers a 1 ,000-nm range.

Solarwave 64

Many yachts boast eco chops because they have a handful of solar panels that power the microwave or navigation lights. The Solarwave 64 , launched last summer, has the potential to run on sunshine alone. The vessel’s 42 solar panels generate 15 kW that are stored in batteries weighing about 1,300 pounds. They connect to electric motors.

Glider SS18

SS18, Glider Yachts

This British builder says it strives for design innovation and the Glider SS18 displays that DNA, the result of 8 years of research and development. She has a head-turning, catamaran hull form constructed from aluminum and composite materials. She is 60 feet LOA with a 17-foot beam, and has a relatively shallow 1-foot draft. Powered by quad Yamaha 300 hp outboards, she can reportedly reach 50 knots, and with her Stability Control System (SCS), should give a smooth ride while doing it.

Best boats under 50ft: 4 of the most spacious secondhand options

  • Top stories

Our resident used boat expert Nick Burnham picks out four of the best boats under 50ft on the market right now that offer lots of interior space in a manageable length.

Space – the final frontier, according to a popular sci-fi TV show. For boat manufacturers, space means something else – sales. Examine the development of family boats over the last decade or two and you’ll see a huge push toward maximising volume.

Decks have got higher as topsides stretch to the sky and boats have got wider to accommodate trends such as full-beam owner’s cabins even on boats below 50ft. These days, boats are floating apartments first, offshore ships second.

Which is fine, it’s clearly what the customer wants, but there is another way. So this month I’ve found you four of the best boats under 50ft that pack in the space without looking like a slimming club visit is long overdue.

best-boats-under-50ft-picchiotti-tigress-exterior

Picchiotti Tigress Mk2

Built: 1982 Price: £84,950

Recommended videos for you

The Picchiotti shipyard in Italy originally built commercial and military vessels before branching out into leisure boats. The original Picchiotti Tigress was launched in the 1970s and was designed to offer the best of British offshore seaworthiness and Italian style.

The yard commissioned Commander Peter Thorneycroft, designer of the Nelson range of boats, to come up with a semi-displacement hull that majored on seakeeping. What it didn’t major on was space, which is why in 1982 the beamier Tigress MK2 was born.

An aft cabin layout plus that extra beam creates spacious accommodation the full length of the vessel. The owner’s cabin is aft and stretches the full beam of the boat due to the en suite heads being positioned just forward of it. The saloon is a decent size despite having the lower helm forward to port.

On the lower deck forward, there’s a well proportioned galley, the day heads and two guest cabins, a vee-berth cabin and a further cabin with split level berths positioned at 90 degrees to one another.

The forward vee-berth is one of three double cabins below decks

Despite being 40 years old next year, this is still a purposeful-looking boat. The exterior helm is situated on the aft deck rather than having a flybridge , which keeps the height down.

Indeed the radar arch is also hinged to lower air draught, making the boat surprisingly useful for inland waterways.

Performance

Sabre Tooth 1 is a great name for a Tigress, especially one fitted with a pair of Sabre 320hp engines. We tested one of the first boats back in 1983, recording 23.5 knots flat out and a pretty comfortable 20 knot cruise.

The saloon’s sense of space is not impeded by the position of the lower helm

There is more than a hint of the Nelson stable in the hull form, with a fine entry and a lot of flare to the topsides.

A knuckle runs the full length of the boat in a bid to reduce spray, but there’s no getting way from the fact that semi-displacement hulls power through big waves rather than surfing over them, displacing plenty of water in the process. However, ultimately the pilot boat ancestry shines through – the Tigress is a great sea boat.

Broom 450 yacht tour: There’s nothing quite like an aft cabin layout

President 485 yacht tour: this 90s classic offers whole lot of boat for your money, aquastar 48.

Built: 2005 Price: £295,000

There are a few similarities with the Picchiotti Tigress, most notably in the heavy-weather semi-displacement hull and in the fact that the beam was stretched beyond that typical for this size and style of boat.

Also like Picchiotti, Aquastar has commercial roots, building heavy weather boats for pilots, customs and harbour masters, evident in the chunky D-section rubber fendering around the gunwales.

There’s a heft and solidity to the polished cherry woodwork that marks Aquastar out as a British builder (the boats were built in Guernsey in the Channel Islands ). A rather lovely, slightly spiralled staircase leads you down into the saloon.

Head aft and you’ll drop down to a lower deck owner’s cabin, the size and square shape of which feels more like a bedroom.

Head forward and you’ll discover a dinette opposite the galley instead of a third cabin, although the table drops and this area curtains off to create occasional sleeping if required. The day heads is here too, and a fore cabin with cross-over vee berths.

aquastar-48-interior-cabin

The solid cherry wood interior demonstrates British craftsmanship at its best

Perhaps the most noticeable aspect of the exterior is the ease of boarding amidships – it’s one single step up onto the side decks, and not a particularly high one at that!

From here it’s an easy stroll to the bow, or head aft where three steps lift you to the aft deck. It’s surprisingly sheltered, with a large hard top from which canopies hang. Three more steps lift you to the flybridge over the saloon, again well sheltered by high sides.

A pair of Volvo Penta TAMD 75P diesels producing nearly 1,000hp between them lift the top speed past 20 knots, but the semi-displacement hull means that a happy cruising speed can be anything from 5 knots to 15 knots.

aquastar-48-interior

Access to the saloon from the aft deck is via an elegant curved staircase

Aquastar offered a 48S variant which had the hard top and fin stabilisers. This boat came with the hard top, and stabilisers have been added.

Again, the ride can get wet when it’s rough, but this is a confident performer, having commuted several times from the UK to the Med, straight across the Bay of Biscay.

Sealine F46

Built: 2010 Price: £279,950

All of the boats featured have aft cabins in order to maximise interior volume – except one. The Sealine F46 launched in 2009 and replaced the Sealine T47. And despite being an aft cockpit layout, the space inside is vast.

Huge wrap-around windscreens with slim mullions and large side windows exaggerate the feeling of space as you step inside the Sealine F46, but it’s not an illusion, there is masses of space in here.

And it’s the same story on the lower deck. Those huge windscreens create an atrium feel to the galley and dinette that greet you as you step down to this level. A third cabin was an option, but most buyers opted for the dinette.

Sealine split off the day heads and shower – one to port and the other to starboard as you head forward – and there’s a decent double berth in the fore cabin.

Further space has been eked out aft of the galley, where a full beam owner’s cabin, complete with en suite, occupy the space below the saloon. Headroom is a little compromised in places, but there’s no shortage of footprint.

Sealine-f46-interior-cabin

The full beam owner’s cabin was a bit of a revelation on a boat this size, made possible by pod drives

Outside, wide side decks, a generous cockpit and a large flybridge that reaches full beam to the transom ensure that there’s no shortage of space here either.

All F46s were fitted with twin CMD QSB5.9 diesel engines producing 480hp each, and all got Zeus pod drives, which link via a joystick to give ‘cheat’ levels of close-quarter handling (in part, it’s the pods that create so much space as they allow the engines to live beneath the cockpit floor).

Top speed in perfect conditions is about 30 knots, so figure on an easy 22-knot cruise, although it’s possible to drop this down to 15 knots and still stay on the plane.

Sealine-f46-interior

Huge windows surround the saloon and throw light into the lower galley and dinette

It’s no sports boat, but those pod drives imbue the F46 with direct and positive steering, and 15 tonnes of displacement combined with the ability to plane at comparatively low speeds mean that the F46 is more than capable of punching gently through even the most challenging conditions.

best-boats-under-50ft-broom-44-exterior

Built: 1993 Price: £139,950

Arguably the oldest builder of boats in the UK, Broom dates back to 1898, when Charles John Broom began building sailing cruisers at the yard in Brundall on the Norfolk Broads and carried on building motor boats here until production finally ceased a couple of years ago. The Broom hire fleet still operates, and dates back to 1912.

What Broom became renowned for was aft cabin cruisers. Boats like the Broom Crown date back to the 1970s so by the time this 44 came along in the early 1990s, it’s fair to say that the company had the hang of it, not to mention a reputation for solid high-quality craftsmanship evident in the boat you see before you.

With the helm on the aft deck, the saloon is a no-compromise zone of plentiful seating divided into lounging and dining areas. The galley features a full-sized washing machine and is opposite cabin three, with its bunk beds. Vee berths make the most of a large forward cabin, but as ever, it’s the aft cabin that steals the show – a true bedroom away from home.

broom-44-interior-cabin

The very private and spacious aft cabin is as comfortable as any bedroom at home

Intriguingly, Broom offered the 44 with an enclosed pilothouse on the raised aft deck and a cockpit behind that. We give it top marks for weatherproofing, even if it is a little anti-social. Which is why most of these craft went out with the layout you see here – the entire aft deck is open beneath its retractable canopies, putting the helm in touch with everyone else on this deck.

Twin Volvo Penta TAMD 61 306hp or TAMD 71 380hp engines were available, but we tested the boat with a similar pair of 370hp Sabre 430L engines to this boat, which should make the 28 knots we achieved with full water and fuel tanks a realistic goal – subject to a few lost ponies over the years.

broom-44-interior

With the helm out of the way on the aft deck, the floorspace of the saloon is voluminous

“Surprisingly agile” was how we described the Broom 44, noting “full lock at full chat produces perfectly balanced turns and a three-boat- length turning circle”. Calm conditions prohibited a thorough test of the seakeeping abilities.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

best motor yachts under 50 feet

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

best motor yachts under 50 feet

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

best motor yachts under 50 feet

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

best motor yachts under 50 feet

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

best motor yachts under 50 feet

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

best motor yachts under 50 feet

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

best motor yachts under 50 feet

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

best motor yachts under 50 feet

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

best motor yachts under 50 feet

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

Best sub-50m yachts

Published 17 March 2022

During 2020-21 the   Burgess brokerage team   has seen around 50 percent of all yacht sales in the 30-50m bracket, proving that it’s stronger than ever. We have seen both sailing and motor yacht sales increase, as former charterers take their first steps into yacht ownership and the privacy, yachting lifestyle and pride of possession that comes with owning a superyacht.

Many first-time owners will have  chartered a yacht   in the  Med ,  Caribbean , Pacific or  Indian Ocean , building a list of features they’ll look for in their first yacht. This size of yacht also gives charterers a chance to experience the multi-faceted aquatic lifestyle. Whether your interest is in motor yachts or sailing yachts, a charter on the other type of yacht can give you a taster of what ownership would be like before you invest.

If you’re looking to buy a sailing yacht over 50m, the choice is rather narrow with shipyards like Baltic, Royal Huisman and Vitters being the obvious ones. Below 50m, however, your options increase both in terms of the styles and the number of sailing yachts available.

Recent circumstances have driven an increased interest in yacht ownership, and if you’re considering the joys of owning a superyacht, we are here to help.

What are the benefits of a sub-50m yacht?

There are many benefits to owning a sub-50m yacht, smaller bills being the most obvious. But it’s not just cost. Sub-50 metre yachts tend to have a more personal feel to them and they are easier to operate with fewer crew members. Their size is ideal for romantic getaways and also for island hopping – you get to explore anchorages and harbours that larger yachts simply cannot visit.

Sub-50m yachts have shallower draft so can explore more widely in places with shallow waters like The Bahamas

Many yachts in the 30-50m size bracket are semi-custom models, or built on a standard platform. They usually have a GRP hull and superstructure which makes them lighter and more economical to buy, run and service. There’s less inherent risk involved in buying from a selection of well-known models rather than choosing from a shortlist of full custom builds. Benetti, Custom Line, Overmarine, Sunseeker and Westport are just a few of the shipyards that build a series of yachts with the same hull under 50m.

The latest designs have clever ways of expanding available space. This 40m yacht has a swim platform comparable to that of a 60m yacht

The cost of refitting, restyling or renovating a 30-50m yacht also tends to be much lower than it is for a larger vessel. This can offer a new owner a unique opportunity to buy a yacht and make it their own from the start, at the fraction of the cost of a new custom build.

Lower cost of operation

Yachts between 30-50m are more cost-efficient to run than larger yachts – their running costs per metre are proportionally lower. A 30m (98.4ft) yacht can have annual running costs of around GBP 800,000 whereas a yacht twice the length can cost three times as much to run. Generally speaking, as it depends on the type of yacht, her age and condition and so on, for every 10m increase in length, the annual costs tend to increase by around GBP 500,000 until it reaches 60m. Upwards from there it increases by around GBP 750,000 per 10m.

A sub-50m yacht delivers all the benefits of the yachting lifestyle but on a more manageable budget

Larger yachts burn more fuel, not only for propulsion but for power generation too. More space, cabins and guests all require larger air conditioning units and higher hotel system loads which must all be accounted for. A 30m (98.4ft) yacht and a 45m (147.6ft) yacht may have similar fuel costs with perhaps GBP 10,000-GBP 20,000 difference but increase the size of yacht to between 45-60m (147.6-196.8ft) and the increase could be GBP 60,000-GBP 90,000.

A smaller yacht needs a smaller crew, reducing costs further

Crew numbers and their costs also increase disproportionately with the size of yacht. A typical 30m yacht might have a crew of five with the total cost of salaries under GBP 200,000. A 40m yacht might have a crew of eight which more than doubles the salary costs to around GBP 500,000, while on a 50m yacht, one could expect 11 crew costing GBP 600,000 a year. But increase the yacht’s length overall by 10m more, to a 60m yacht, and a crew of 14 could bring the crew salaries to around GBP 900,000.

More environmentally friendly

For the environmentally-minded owner, a 30-50m yacht is better. Fewer raw materials are used in the yacht’s production, and fuel consumption for propulsion and power generation is lower too. Hotel loads can be managed by larger battery banks, rather than constant power generation. A sailing yacht is the ultimate eco-friendly yacht, offering a way to cruise far and wide with a reduced environmental footprint, retaining a luxury lifestyle without burning hundreds of gallons of diesel.

Sailing yachts use a fraction of the fuel motor yachts do

Yachts of any type in the 30-50m range also lend themselves well to shorter, eco-friendlier trips, using less fuel. Harbour berths too are easier to come by; rather than launching the tender and running it back and forth, you can simply step ashore of an evening. You can also cruise and holiday with fewer guests, without the guilt of transporting empty cabins and the staff needed to serve non-existent visitors. Fewer people on board reduces the carbon footprint of guests travelling to the yacht as well as fuel consumption while on board. All this is good for the planet.

Get the best of both worlds when cruising and docking

Larger motor yachts have a cruising speed of around 10-15 knots. Many 30m yachts will happily cruise at between 20-30 knots with maximum speed at 30 knots or above. Being faster, many sub-50m yachts can travel twice as far in a day, giving a greater variety of destinations and options for you and your guests.

Performance yachts are great for island hopping because you can visit more of them in the time available, but fuel costs will be higher than a displacement yacht

Whether you spend the night in a harbour or an anchorage, a 30-50m yacht can offer an excellent lifestyle and on board experience. Larger yachts lend themselves better to out-of-port life; touch-and-go helipads make transfers easier, but not being able to fit a large yacht into a harbour makes shopping or sightseeing visits dependent on transfer by tender. Sub-50m yachts, on the other hand, can usually find a berth in port. Entering and leaving ports is less problematic in smaller yachts and port operations procedures can often be achieved in half the time, maximising your time at sea.

Perfect for island hopping

The versatility of 30-50m yachts makes them the best choice if you like to keep on the move and explore different islands and anchorages. A beach picnic ashore on one secluded sandy bay for lunch, a different west-facing beach for an evening barbecue to watch the sun sink below the horizon.

Faster yachts let you get to the best anchorages first - and closer to the shore

A faster cruising speed enables your captain to get to remote bays before larger yachts, enabling your crew to choose the best location for the day’s activities – before the larger yachts arrive. As we mentioned, port operations in a smaller yacht are easier and quicker so more time is available to do what you enjoy on board.

More intimate than larger yachts

There is much to be said for larger yachts, but rarely do they have the same friendly feel as a 30m yacht , which is perfect for a romantic getaway with your partner or an intimate cruise with family or friends. More space is not always a good thing. Whether you want to relax in the saloon as a family or have a romantic meal for two on the sun deck it’s wonderful to have the secluded feel of your yacht without feeling overwhelmed by space.

You're better connected to friends and family on a sub-50m yacht, you're not going to lose each other

Sub-50m yachts are far more inclusive. You’ll hear a giggle from your children or the laughter from your guests in the beach club – you don’t miss out on what’s happening on board. You do, however, still have plenty of private space on a 30-50m yacht to be alone if you want to or need to. You have the choice.

A larger market should you choose to charter or sell

The sub-50m sector is also an evergreen market, it’s popular with owners as a way of experiencing the yachting lifestyle without the financial commitment of commissioning a large, full custom superyacht. As such, when the time comes to sell your 30-50m yacht, you know there will be people in the position you are in now, those looking to buy the most popular size of yacht for the first time.

There will always be a bigger market for 30-50m yachts than those of 50m-plus

It’s also a buoyant sector for charter. If you wish to offset some of the cost of ownership, more charterers are looking for this size of motor yacht or sailing yacht than for yachts above 50m.

Best sub-50m motor yachts

While yachts around the 30m mark are faster, the 40-50m market   offer many of the benefits of the smaller yachts but with much more interior volume. Volume is measured in Gross Tonnage, one gross ton being 100 cubic feet or 2.8 cubic metres. A typical 30m yacht may have a volume of around 150GT, but 40m yacht may have a volume of 350GT. Increase the length to 45m and you could have closer to 500GT. For a small increase in overall length the owner gets a lot more usable space inside.

The 45m SUNONE has an internal volume of 491GT

Size and design of the sailboat

The best sailboats in this category offer a well-balanced blend of performance, storage, and living space. As many of these boats are designed for long-distance cruising, having ample storage for provisions, equipment, and personal items is essential. While smaller sailboats might be more affordable and easier to handle, you'll need to strike a balance between size and the level of comfort you desire on extended voyages.

Durability of a bluewater sailboat

These boat's hulls are typically constructed with sturdy, long-lasting materials like fiberglass, steel, or even aluminum. Additionally, the rigging and deck hardware should be robust, capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions and continuous use. As you evaluate potential bluewater sailboats, pay attention to the quality of the craftsmanship and materials used throughout the boat, as this will largely determine its ability to handle the rigors of ocean sailing.

Seaworthiness of the sailboat

This characteristic refers to a boat's ability to handle rough seas, high winds, and other challenging conditions that you might encounter on your journeys. A seaworthy sailboat should exhibit:

  • A stable, well-designed hull that can efficiently cut through waves
  • A deep, secure cockpit to protect the crew from the elements
  • High-quality, easily accessible safety equipment
  • Solid, watertight hatches and portlights

When evaluating a sailboat's seaworthiness, it's important to consider its design, construction, and previous ocean-crossing performance, if available.

Comfort and livability of the boat

As you'll likely be spending extended periods at sea, it's essential to have a comfortable living space to make your journey more enjoyable. Key factors in comfort and livability include:

  • A roomy, well-ventilated cabin with ample headroom
  • Adequate sleeping arrangements for the crew
  • A functional galley for meal preparation
  • Efficient systems for heating, ventilation, and lighting
To learn more about bluewater sailing , here's our comprehensive article on it.

Let's discuss a few key factors you should look for to find the perfect bluewater sailboat for your needs.

Size matters : As we're focusing on sailboats under 50 feet, it's important to think about how the size of the boat will impact your cruising experience. Smaller sailboats tend to be easier to manage and maintain, while larger ones typically offer more space and comfort. Take into account your sailing skills and the size of your crew when making a decision.

Design and construction : A well-built sailboat plays a vital role in your safety and success when sailing in blue waters. Look for proven bluewater sailboat designs, like those found on Waterborne Magazine's list or Yachting World's selection. A solid construction and well-maintained hull will ensure your boat can withstand the rigors of offshore sailing.

Budget and maintenance costs : It's crucial to consider not only the initial purchase price but also the ongoing maintenance costs when choosing your bluewater sailboat. Established designs often have a good track record for reliability, which can help keep costs down in the long run. Some sailboats under $100,000 can still provide excellent bluewater cruising experiences.

Sailing purpose and destination : Your choice of sailboat will also depend on the type of sailing you plan to do and the destinations you wish to visit. Are you looking for a boat to tackle lengthy ocean passages or a vessel for coastal cruising? Each type might require different features and focuses, so plan accordingly.

Creature comforts and functionality : Finally, think about the amenities you want on your bluewater sailboat—you'll be spending quite some time onboard. A functional galley, comfortable sleeping arrangements, and a functional navigation station are just a few of the features that can make your sailing experience more enjoyable.
