Con sus más de 110 años de vida, el Yacht Club Uruguayo mantiene hoy toda su vigencia como institución destinada a fomentar el Yachting y las buenas prácticas marineras. Fundado en 1906 por un grupo de amigos amantes de la navegación tuvo su primera sede en un viejo pontón faro, en el puerto de Montevideo.

Actualmente el Yacht Club Uruguayo administra el espejo de agua del Puerto del Buceo en uno de los puntos de mayor desarrollo de Montevideo a solo 10 minutos del centro de la ciudad y a 15 del aeropuerto Internacional de Carrasco. Este magnifico espejo de agua cuenta con mas de trescientas embarcaciones en amarras siendo el 80% veleros, cinco amarras de franquía para barcos de paso, servicio de embarque las 24 hrs y un gran varadero con posibilidad de pintura y reparaciones varias.

La sede cuenta también con 2 piscinas, 6 canchas de tenis, 3 de fútbol 5  y 1 de fútbol 7.-

Pero a pesar de sus más de  110 años y su gran infraestructura el Yacht Club Uruguayo sigue sintiéndose orgulloso de poder decir que su mayor patrimonio está en la amistad, que gusta compartir con quien nos visita y con quien vibra en la emoción común del arte de la navegación a vela.

Local News | Sailors honored for heroic September 2023 rescue in Wilmette

The U.S. Sailing Association presented yachting’s highest honor to 5 local sailors, who last September rescued a man overboard under trying conditions.

The ceremony was held at the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club at Wilmette Harbor on Saturday, March 23.

Craig Warner, an avid sailboat racer and boating safety advocate with 40-plus years of racing history, nominated the 5 fellow sailors awarded for their heroism and skill.

“Water is a foreign environment and people don’t realize if you want to fight Lake Michigan, you are never going to win,” Warner said.

Saturday’s ceremony is important, Warner says, for racers around the world because it honors those who risked their own safety and provides valuable lessons in prevention to future sailors.

The Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal nomination letter noted, the man overboard occurred on September 8, 2023 during the Soling United States National Championship at Wilmette.

The Soling is known as a one design boat, 27 feet long with a crew of three.

On that Friday afternoon, the incident occurred during the day’s second race, in weather with winds gusting to 20 knots, waves 3 to 4 feet and a water temperature of 67 degrees Fahrenheit.

“A wave hit the boat and changed the angle of the boat to the wind, the boom which holds the main sail hit skipper, Dave Slaght, launching him backwards and into the water,” Warner said.

The five sailors who received the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal were Richard Traub of Wilmette, John Kiener of Evanston, John Kennedy of Evanston, Kent Smith of Glenview and Robert Nickel of Evanston.

U.S. Sailing Association Board Member Matt Gallagher presented the medals.

“Out on the water we have to rely on each other, beyond good sportsmanship and being a good Samaritan, at sea we are obliged to assist someone in peril,” Gallagher said. “This was a successful rescue, but the situation could have quickly turned dire.”

Warner said the Hanson Medal is sailing’s highest honor, recognizing the efforts made by fellow racers who risk their health or life to rescue another mariner in distress.

Fellow rescuer John Kiener said they first detected trouble when they were about a half mile away.

“Your best resource is to rely on training and a checklist, because things are happening so quickly that your course of action, is being decided while the reality is changing from fuzzy to clear view,” Kiener said.

Warner says with boating season right around the corner, boaters are anxious to get their boats ready and out on the water. This is a good time to take a step back to put a well-honed safety plan in place.

“One thing for sure, you don’t want your first rescue experience to take place during an emergency,” Warner said. “You want to be ready, you just never know when it can happen to you.”

The Fan Controlled Football league is about to become feline-controlled football. Following a $40 million Series A funding round, the experimental sports startup is taking a big step into the metaverse , handing management responsibilities for two of its eight teams to existing NFT communities: the Bored Ape Yacht Club and the Gutter Cat Gang.

In making its debut last year with four teams, FCF allowed fans viewing on Twitch to vote live for play calls. For its second season (or Season v2.0, as FCF calls it), the league is expanding to eight teams, with four tied to NFTs. Another team will be led by the Knights of Degen community, while the last newcomer is helmed by techno DJ Steve Aoki and anonymous crypto collector 888.

Beginning on April 16, FCF’s 7-on-7 games will be played at a new venue in Atlanta, in front of up to 2,500 fans, and will air on DAZN, Peacock and NBCLX, in addition to Twitch.

Animoca Brands and Delphi Digital led the funding round. They were joined by Gemini Frontier Fund and 6th Man Ventures, as well as previous investors, including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Verizon Ventures and others.

“I’ve been talking since 2018 about how we could leverage blockchain,” FCF SEO Sohrob Farudi said in an interview. “I think it’s gone from, ‘Wow, that’s kind of crazy out there,’ to ‘Oh, that’s actually the future,’ and we have a chance to embrace it and be first…. I was able to get more traction for where I thought this business was going earlier than I anticipated, and this round proves that that’s the case.” 

Farudi added that the FCF is also working on an actual video game featuring the Ballerz NFTs, with a target to launch before the end of the year. 

Whereas most sports leagues use geographic affiliation to develop fan bases, the first four FCF teams relied on star power to generate connection, with the likes of Marshawn Lynch and Quavo representing teams. This time around, the league is turning to preexisting communities. 

“We’ve got four teams that are coming on board that actually already have a fan base,” Farudi said. “I’m sure there are a lot of Bored Ape holders out there that aren’t [football fans], that are going to be like, ‘Well, if the Bored Apes have a football team, I guess I’m going to have to be a football fan now.’”

North Korea’s Kim Jong Un sends condolences to Russia’s Putin over deadly Moscow attack

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has offered his condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin following the deadly concert attack in Moscow, state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Sunday.

Kim “expressed deep condolences and sympathy” to Putin, the Russian people, the victims and their families on the news of heavy casualties caused by a “large-scale terrorist attack in (the) Moscow region,” KCNA reported.

North Korea opposes “all sorts of terrorism and nothing can justify the heinous terrorism threatening human life,” Kim said in the KCNA report. “Our people regard the misfortune and sorrow of the friendly Russian people as their own pain.”

ISIS releases graphic video they claim shows Russia concert hall attack

ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq released a graphic video on Saturday that purports to show Friday’s attack at a concert hall in suburban Moscow recorded by one of the attackers, suggesting the perpetrators had a direct link to ISIS in order to be able to send the video.

CNN has geolocated it to the concert hall and notes that its identifying metadata has been erased.

The video, which is about 90 seconds long, shows four attackers with their faces blurred and voices distorted in what appears to be the Crocus City Hall complex.

The video shows one attacker signaling to another gunman, who then walks past a door where people are hiding and opens fire on them.

Bodies and blood can be seen on the floor, with fire raging at a distance.

The video also shows one of the attackers slitting the throat of a man lying on his back.

The video ends with the four attackers walking away inside the building as smoke can be seen at a distance.

On Friday, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, according to a short statement published by Amaq.

On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested Ukraine was behind the attack, stating the perpetrators had “tried to hide and moved towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the border.”

Ukraine has vehemently denied any connection to Friday's attack.

Company that owns Crocus City Hall venue calls attack a "monstrous tragedy"

The Russian company Crocus International, which owns Crocus City Hall, expressed its deep condolences in a statement Sunday to the victims of the terrorist attack at the concert hall in the Moscow region Friday, which left more than 130 people dead.

"Together with the whole of Russia, we mourn the dead and hope for a speedy recovery of those who’ve suffered in this monstrous tragedy," the company said. "In these difficult days, we are doing and will do everything possible to help the authorities and special services with their difficult work, and together with the whole country help victims of the terrorist attack."

The statement thanked concert-goers, partners and artists for their support and assistance.

"Special thanks to the concert hall team, who acted professionally, clearly, and heroically in a crisis situation, and thanks to this, managed to save most of the guests and employees who were in Crocus City Hall that evening," it continued.

White House says there was "no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever" in Moscow region onslaught

US Vice President Kamala Harris and the White House National Security Council said there is no evidence that Ukraine is behind the attack at a concert hall near Moscow.

“There is no, whatsoever, any evidence — and in fact, what we know to be the case is that ISIS-K is actually, by all accounts, responsible for what happened,” Harris said in an interview with ABC News. “What has happened is an act of terrorism and the number of people who've been killed is obviously a tragedy and we should all send our condolences to those families."

National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said:

"In early March, the US government shared information with Russia about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow. We also issued a public advisory to Americans in Russia on March 7. ISIS bears sole responsibility for this attack. There was no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever."

A Friday night attack at Crocus City Hall, a popular concert venue complex near Moscow, left more than 130 people killed and even more wounded after assailants stormed the venue with guns and incendiary devices. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, without providing evidence.

Four suspects involved in the attack were detained in the Bryansk region and taken to Moscow, where they are now in the custody of Russia's Investigative Committee, Russian state media TASS reported Saturday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said "miserable" Russian President Vladimir Putin waited   overnight before publicly addressing Russians, only to accuse   Ukraine of having a hand in the terror attack at a concert hall near Moscow.

• More on the attack: According to the interior ministry, “all terrorists detained in the Bryansk region are foreign citizens ,” Russian state media reported. A handful of Russian officials have suggested  without evidence  that Ukraine may have been involved in the attack as well.
• Global reactions: Leaders around the world — such as the French, Israeli and Turkish presidents — have expressed their condolences and condemnation of the onslaught. The United States “ strongly condemns ” the shooting, according to the White House and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also denounced the attack , stressing that ISIS is a significant global threat at a news conference Saturday.
• Belarus claims it thwarted suspects: Belarusian special services helped Russia prevent the "terrorists" who allegedly carried out the deadly attack from escaping across the border Friday night, the country's ambassador in Moscow said.
• Estimated damage total: The total estimated damage to the Moscow region's Crocus City Hall after Friday's terror attack is between 9.5-11.4 billion rubles, or approximately $103-124 million, according to a shopping union vice president, as reported by Russian state media RIA Novosti.

On Saturday, Putin told the Russian people that the perpetrators of the Crocus City Hall attack had “tried to hide and moved towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window was prepared for them on the Ukrainian side to cross the border.”

Zelensky and several Ukrainian officials have vehemently denied Ukraine has any kind of involvement in the attack.

In his nightly address, Zelensky also said that Russians "have come to Ukraine, burn our cities – and try to blame Ukraine."

Zelensky added that if the Russian people do "not ask any questions to their security and intelligence agencies, then Putin will try to turn such a situation to his personal advantage again."

More background: The terror group ISIS claimed responsibility for Russia's attack, according to a short statement published by ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram Friday. ISIS has not provided evidence to support the claim.

Earlier this week, Putin had dismissed warnings by the US embassy that there could be terrorist attacks on large groups, telling the Federal Security Service (FSB) that the embassy warnings were "provocative" and "outright blackmail."

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement Saturday that the United States “strongly condemns” the terrorist attack at a concert venue complex near Moscow that left at least 133 people dead.

She added that ISIS, which has claimed responsibility for the attack without providing evidence, is a “common terrorist enemy that must be defeated everywhere.”

“We extend our deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones and to those who were injured or affected by these unconscionable attacks against innocent civilians," Jean-Pierre said in a statement issued by the White House. "ISIS is a common terrorist enemy that must be defeated everywhere."

4 suspects in Friday's attack are being questioned by Russian investigators, state media reports

Four suspects in Friday's terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall were detained in the Bryansk region and taken to Moscow, where they are now in the custody of Russia's Investigative Committee, Russian state media TASS reported Saturday.

The suspects were brought in two prisoner transport vehicles, which are still in the courtyard of the committee, a TASS correspondent reported. This indicates that the suspects are being interrogated and the investigation is ongoing, according to TASS.

In the coming days, investigators are expected to file a court motion asking for imprisonment as the chosen preventative measure. All four suspects face life imprisonment, TASS reports.

'Best this market has to offer': 5 Stockton soccer players try out for FC Cincinnati club

The journey to playing professional soccer can be an unpredictable road, especially for youth soccer players hailing from the 209.

With the city’s talent constantly being overlooked, Chris Hernandez is doing all he can to give athletes opportunities to showcase what Stockton soccer players are made of. The Stockton F.C. founder and Franklin soccer head coach took five local athletes to a three-day trial for F.C. Cincinnati’s youth club from March 12-14.

“I just network, that’s what I do and I try to have conversations with people and see if anybody's interested in our players and our market here in Stockton,” Hernandez said. “I just got lucky. I mean somehow, someway, I find a way to, like, garner some interest for this area.”

Thanks to Hernandez’s connections in the soccer world, Franklin’s Daniel Guerra, Aaron Chavez, Angelo Vieyra, Lincoln’s Caleb Cliburn and Venture Academy’s Angelnoe Perez got to test their luck in Cincinnati.

‘Best this market has to offer’

As someone who is constantly searching for Stockton’s next Alex Alcalá, Hernandez hand-picked five players to make the trip to Ohio. These athletes have played key roles in their high school and club team’s season this year, making them standouts to Hernandez.

Cliburn was a leader for the Trojans this past season and was their key aggressor at the midfielder position. Perez, who doesn’t play for Venture Academy’s soccer team but for a Stockton club team, has a relentless work ethic. Guerra, whose last name means warrior, is just that on the pitch for Franklin as one of its more physical players.

Vieyra stands out as the only left-footed player out of the five players, making him difficult to defend. This is his second time traveling out of the state for a youth soccer trial after making the trip to Germany in July 2023. Chavez is the youngest of the five, a 6-foot-2 freshman who played varsity for the Yellowjackets this past season.

“I’ve known these players for some time now and with me being so close to this market and studying it, I think they're the best this market has to offer,” Hernandez said. “So for kids who were born between 2007 and 2009, that class of players, these five represent the best for me.”

Out of their comfort zone

Throughout their three-day trial, the five Stockton athletes participated in various training drills and scrimmages with the hopes of catching the eye of Larry Sunderland, the director of player development for FC Cincinnati.

Sunderland has a long history of molding and discovering young talents in the soccer world as the former USA Youth National Team coach and youth technical director for the Portland Timbers.

“During my time at Portland, I was quite familiar with some of the better talent pools and markets around California and Stockton was certainly one of those places where we had anticipated scouting and looking for talent,” Sunderland said. “It has a pretty diverse market, much different than the talent pool here in Cincinnati.”

The five players showcased that diversity, shining in their own fashion through the trials. It wasn’t an easy transition for them though as they were up against a level of talent they hadn't seen in Stockton. For Perez, facing that level of skill was his favorite part of the trip.

“Not being one of the best players there was my favorite part,” Perez said. “I like being around people that are a little bit better than you are or at the same level you are. It feels good to get to experience that.”

Along with facing a new level of competition, the athletes got a taste of what it’s like to train in an MLS facility.

“The first day we got to meet the director of the club and then we got a little tour of the facilities where the pros train, their locker room where they eat and stuff, like crazy, super, awesome stuff,” Cliburn said. “Then we got our jerseys, got to change in the locker room and meet a couple of the guys from the team.”

What’s next?

Since the trial ended on March 14, the five athletes are waiting to see if their number is called up for a possible open invite to FC Cincinnati youth club and a chance to play for Cincinnati’s GA Cup team.

According to Sunderland, the club isn’t looking for a particular player profile but for a player that fits the club’s needs and playstyle. They won’t have a decision until closer to the day of the GA Cup, which runs from March 30- April 7.

While the five wait for their professional fate to be determined they can relish the fact that they had an opportunity not many other Stockton-area soccer players get to have.

“It feels good because I get to travel to other states and countries to play soccer,” Vieyra said. “This trip for me, it felt like more was on the line because I know I don’t have much time left. It’s hard to get to teams when you’re getting older so I’m thankful for this opportunity and thankful for Chris.”

MOSCOW (AP) — Assailants burst into a large concert hall in Moscow on Friday and sprayed the crowd with gunfire, killing over 60 people, injuring more than 100 and setting fire to the venue in a brazen attack just days after President Vladimir Putin cemented his grip on power in a highly orchestrated electoral landslide.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on affiliated channels on social media. A U.S. intelligence official told The Associated Press that U.S. intelligence agencies had learned the group’s branch in Afghanistan was planning an attack in Moscow and shared the information with Russian officials.

It wasn’t immediately clear what happened to the attackers after the raid, which state investigators were investigating as terrorism.

The attack, which left the concert hall in flames with a collapsing roof, was the deadliest in Russia in years and came as the country’s war in Ukraine dragged into a third year. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called the raid a “huge tragedy.”

The Kremlin said Putin was informed minutes after the assailants burst into Crocus City Hall, a large music venue on Moscow’s western edge that can accommodate 6,200 people.

The attack took place as crowds gathered for a performance by the Russian rock band Picnic. The Investigative Committee, the top state criminal investigation agency, reported early Saturday that more than 60 people were killed. Health authorities released a list of 145 injured — 115 of them hospitalized, including five children.

Some Russian news reports suggested more victims could have been trapped by the blaze that erupted after the assailants threw explosives.

Video showed the building on fire, with a huge cloud of smoke rising through the night sky. The street was lit up by the blinking blue lights of dozens of firetrucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles, as fire helicopters buzzed overhead to dump water on the blaze that took hours to contain.

The prosecutor’s office said several men in combat fatigues entered the concert hall and fired on concertgoers.

Dave Primov, who was in the hall during the attack, described panic and chaos when the attack began.

“There were volleys of gunfire,” Primov told the AP. “We all got up and tried to move toward the aisles. People began to panic, started to run and collided with each other. Some fell down and others trampled on them.”

Videos posted by Russian media and on messaging app channels showed men toting assault rifles shooting screaming people at point-blank range. One video showed a man in the auditorium saying the assailants had set it on fire, as gunshots rang out incessantly.

Guards at the concert hall didn’t have guns, and some could have been killed at the start of the attack, Russian media reported. Some Russian news outlets suggested the assailants fled before special forces and riot police arrived. Reports said police patrols were looking for several vehicles the attackers could have used to escape.

In a statement posted by its Aamaq news agency, the Islamic State group said it attacked a large gathering of “Christians” in Krasnogorsk on Moscow’s outskirts, killing and wounding hundreds. It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the claim.

However, U.S. intelligence officials confirmed the claim by the Islamic State group’s branch based in Afghanistan that it was responsible for the Moscow attack, a U.S. official told the AP.

The official said U.S. intelligence agencies had gathered information in recent weeks that the IS branch was planning an attack in Moscow. He said U.S. officials privately shared the intelligence earlier this month with Russian officials. The official was briefed on the matter but was not authorized to publicly discuss the intelligence information and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Noting that the IS statement cast its claim as an attack targeting Christians, Aymenn Jawad al-Tamimi, an expert on the terrorist group, said it appeared to reflect the group’s strategy of “striking wherever they can as part of a global ‘fight the infidels and apostates everywhere.’”

In October 2015, a bomb planted by IS downed a Russian passenger plane over Sinai, killing all 224 people on board, most of them Russian vacation-goers returning from Egypt. The group, which operates mainly in Syria and Iraq but also in Afghanistan and Africa, also has claimed several attacks in Russia’s volatile Caucasus and other regions in the past years. It recruited fighters from Russia and other parts of former Soviet Union.

On March 7, Russia’s top security agency said it thwarted an attack on a synagogue in Moscow by an Islamic State cell, killing several of its members in the Kaluga region near the Russian capital. A few days earlier, Russian authorities said six alleged IS members were killed in a shootout in Ingushetia in Russia’s Caucasus region.

On Friday, statements of outrage, shock and support for those affected by the concert call attack streamed in from around the world.

Some commentators on Russian social media questioned how authorities, who relentlessly surveil and pressure Kremlin critics, failed to identify the threat and prevent the attack.

Russian officials said security was tightened at Moscow’s airports, railway stations and the capital’s sprawling subway system. Moscow’s mayor canceled all mass gatherings, and theaters and museums shut for the weekend. Other Russian regions also tightened security.

The Kremlin didn’t immediately blame anyone for the attack, but some Russian lawmakers were quick to accuse Ukraine and called for ramping up strikes. Hours before the attack, the Russian military l aunched a sweeping barrage on Ukraine’s power system, crippling the country’s biggest hydroelectric plant and other energy facilities and leaving more than a million people without electricity.

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, said that if Ukraine involvement was proven, all those involved “must be tracked down and killed without mercy, including officials of the state that committed such outrage.”

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, denied Ukraine involvement.

“Ukraine has never resorted to the use of terrorist methods,” he posted on X. “Everything in this war will be decided only on the battlefield.”

John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said he couldn’t yet speak about the details but “the images are just horrible. And just hard to watch.”

Friday’s attack followed a statement earlier this month by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow that urged Americans to avoid crowded places in view of “imminent” plans by extremists to target large gatherings in the Russian capital, including concerts. The warning was repeated by several other Western embassies.

National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said Friday the U.S. government had information about a planned attack in Moscow, prompting the State Department advisory to Americans. The U.S. government shared the information with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding “duty to warn” policy, Watson said.

Putin, who extended his grip on Russia for another six years in this week’s presidential vote after a sweeping crackdown on dissent, denounced the Western warnings as an attempt to intimidate Russians. “All that resembles open blackmail and an attempt to frighten and destabilize our society,” he said earlier this week.

Russia was shaken by a series of deadly terror attacks in the early 2000s during the fighting with separatists in the Russian province of Chechnya.

In October 2002, Chechen militants took about 800 people hostage at a Moscow theater. Two days later, Russian special forces stormed the building and 129 hostages and 41 Chechen fighters died, most from effects of narcotic gas Russian forces use to subdue the attackers.

In September 2004, about 30 Chechen militants seized a school in Beslan in southern Russia taking hundreds of hostages. The siege ended in a bloodbath two days later and more than 330 people, about half of them children, were killed.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Food is very expensive,very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More
