YYachts presents the new YBreeze 75 daysailer

YBreeze 75

YYachts presents the YBreeze 75 daysailer, a  solution to challenges faced by the sailboat industry. This innovative vessel combines the elegance of sailboats with the convenience of powerboats. Key features include a sporty performance, luxurious interior, advanced technology, and sharing possibilities. Customizable options ensure a unique sailing experience. Enjoy the future of sailing with the Y Breeze 75 from YYachts.

YYachts carefully selected the name “Breeze” for this sailing yacht to emphasize that it goes beyond being just a new model. Instead, it represents a new concept that revolutionizes how people experience and connect with the sea.

YBreeze 75

The naval architecture and the exterior design are made in collaboration with Cossutti Yacht Design. The exterior impresses with clean lines and gives the YB75 a sporty character.

Developed in collaboration with the Wendover Studio, the interior style is designed to guarantee an inviting, practical and elegant atmosphere. Materials are appropriately used, carefully detailed and coordinated to represent today’s luxury style people expect to feel at home. Of course, the style can be customized following clients’ preferences.

The stern platform of the YBreeze 75 folds out, making access to the water much easier than on other yachts. To enjoy the cockpit, the YB75 offers a galley coming up from the deck. It’s equipped with a sink, two fridges (one for drink/one for food) and a barbecue grill. The entire deck is designed as a safe walkaround, with no steps in between. In order to be able to head for shallower anchorages, the telescopic keel can reduce the draught to 2.50 metres.

Fenders are deployed via a special system and stowed on board to save space. On the lower deck, there will be a flexible layout with a saloon and different configurations for the guest cabin (daybed, two single beds or one double). A playroom for kids can also be installed. To enjoy the Mediterranean summer, the YBreeze 75 offers different options of sunbeds: stand-alone sunbeds or a box with inbuilt gimbaled sunbeds.

A good handicap makes the YBreeze 75 interesting for racing with a small crew (max 6) Water Ballast ensures good stability (big sail plan for performances) also with a small crew. The naval architect considered the major wind configuration in the most popular Mediterranean areas, The rating, in comparison with other boats looks very favourable.

YBreeze 75

The shipyard’s carbon footprint is continuously being reduced. We review all processes in order to produce as climate-neutrally as possible. For the YBreeze 75, we only use wood and panels that interior outfitters of larger mega yachts provide as surplus. For the construction of the yacht, we will use sustainable epoxy and numerous eco-friendly products and materials. The YB75 can be delivered with a diesel engine (120 hp) running on synthetic fuel or with an electric engine.

First look: Y Yachts’ Y Breeze – a 75ft daysailer? (sold with crew included!)

admin

A brand new 75ft ‘luxury daysailer’ concept, the Y Breeze YB75, has been unveiled by Michael Schmidt’s Y-Yachts. Toby Hodges got an exclusive chat to the design team behind this radical luxury yacht

Y-Yachts has unveiled a fascinating new 75ft luxury daysailer concept, the Y Breeze.

Y-Yachts founder Michael Schmidt, the veteran racing sailor, industry pioneer and former Hanse Yachts owner, is known for his innovation, particularly with a focus on making yachts simple, fun and approachable. The YBreeze YB75 strips things back to that – right back.

The YB75  is designed to be ultra clean and easy to sail. The sale of each boat will even include a crewmember to ensure it’s always ready for that quick sunset sail.

“For the last 30 years the number of powerboats have been increasing. Now it’s time to go back to sailing – with something eco and cool,” Schmidt told us at the announcement of the YBreeze project in his Y-Yachts office and home in Palma, Mallorca.

Designed by Cossutti Yacht Design, with an interior described as exclusive luxury by Gabriel Chipperfield’s Studio Wendover, the YB75 is reminiscent of some of the iconic Wally Yachts. Indeed the high bulwarks echo that of the 43m Esense .

y yacht 75

High bulwarks create a very clean aesthetic while allowing for a safe, protected, walk around deck on the YBreeze

These bulwarks serve both aesthetical and practical purposes. Schmidt wanted the looks so clean that even stanchions could be avoided. The bulwarks give the required safe height for a full walkaround deck.

Further aft these bulwarks help conceal the steering consoles when not in use. And then, towards the transom, we see a feature adopted by powerboats of late: the bulwarks fold out like wings to create a vast sunbathing deck. The YB75 will be the first sailing yacht to feature such a system.

y yacht 75

As well as looking ultra clean, the aim of the YB75 is to offer the comfort of a comparable powerboat. So while the decks are devoid of lines and clutter, a galley unit can rise up from below the deck. And Y-Yachts is devising its own standalone removable sunbeds including gimballing versions for the aft deck. Removable or fixed biminis can also cover this area.

A glance at the accommodation plan will show there is no interior space in the aft third of the boat, but instead a large garage for toys and dive gear.

75ft of instant fun

Making the boat easy to use is so important when comparing to the power market, believes Schmidt (and he knows from his experience with Fjord motor yachts) – hence crew will be included in the price!

“Each boat we sell we’ll sell with a crewmember,” Schmidt explained. “So you can call and say ‘in one hour I want to go sailing’ and the boat will be ready.”

Y-Yachts is even studying fenders that can automatically deploy and inflate. “We’re trying to avoid the hassle of having to ‘prepare and de-prepare a sailboat,” said Schmidt.

“We saw people buying power but getting bored quickly,” commented Y-Yachts head of design Francesca Modica. “The challenge was to make such a dayboat a sail boat.”

y yacht 75

The YBreeze is designed to be allow owners to get off the dock quickly for fun, simple sailing

The YB75 is designed to appeal to owners who have houses in the sailing playgrounds of Palma, Sardinia and St Tropez areas. An app will not only be used to control the boat but Schmidt envisages it allowing multiple owners to share a boat.

Why this size? I asked. “It’s the best way to show the sexy concept – 55ft is too small I think… it’s a toy not an explorer,” he replied.

The YB75 is the largest project yet for the Italian designers and ORC specialists Cossutti, who first discussed Schmidt’s latest brainchild with him in September last year. The sheerline is particularly clever: modern, bold and actually relatively straight it helps disguise the bulwarks and coachroof which extends so far forward.

After analysing the type of Med sailing location the prospective owner will use, typically the Balearics/Costa Smerelda/south France, Cossutti found that 90% of the time the wind averages around 10 knots. So they chose a narrow hull with a low wetted surface.

“The idea is to have fun without needing many people on board, hence the water ballast,” Maurizio Cossutti explained. A tonne of water ballast will offset the need for lots of weight in the keel or crew on the rail.

Cossutti calculates that the YB75 will be competitive with a Maxi 72, yet can be handled on a race track by a crew of six as opposed to a team typically three times that size.

y yacht 75

In some senses the interior design is a revisit by Gabriel Chipperfield (of Wendover Studio) of the interior his father David did for Schmidt’s first yacht, Cool Breeze . It’s an adaptable space, and while there are berths the expectation is not that owners will spend many nights aboard, instead using it as a daysailer for fun cruising, racing and entertaining.

“We wanted people to go inside and stay inside, not be depressed by it,” Chipperfield said at the project’s unveiling. He has chosen light, sustainable or natural materials, such as leather, timber, rattan and straw. The timber will be surplus material from outfitters of mega yachts.

YBreeze sustainable build

Y-Yachts has placed a strong focus on sustainability for YBreeze. It has already incorporated electric drives in its boats, but Schmidt believes synthetic diesel would be better in terms of carbon footprint for the YB75.

Y-Yachts is also working with a Spanish firm on using their green epoxy which can reportedly be separated and burned after use. And the innovative yard has already spent 18 months investigating ways to avoid moulds with composite yacht manufacturing – stay tuned for more on that and this intriguing project as details are released.

YYACHTS YBREEZE 75 - THE NEW ICONIC DAYSAILER FOR SPEED AND FUN

With the all-new YBREEZE 75 daysailer, we have created - in collaboration with Cossutti Yacht Design - what promises to be a whole new type of yacht. More a coastal speed machine than an offshore cruiser, this eye-catching 75-foot carbon-fibre craft has been designed for sailors who want to enjoy relaxing afternoons with friends or the excitement of a regatta.

ICONIC DESIGN

Inspired by the AC 75 America's Cup yachts of the early 2000s, the YBREEZE 75 is the first yacht in the world to feature opening hull wings for a larger aft platform. With the low coachroof almost invisible, the YBREEZE 75 boasts a very dynamic look, pointing towards its performance intentions. The sides stand out for their clean lines, with no pulpits or stanchions. As on a much larger yacht, guests can stroll comfortably around the entire deck area.

DESIGNED COMFORT

Spacious and airy below deck, the Y75 BREEZE offers the interior space of a traditional 70-foot luxury yacht with 3 cabins, 3 showers and 3 toilets, a beautifully designed galley and an impressive saloon. The cabin atmosphere is luxurious and light, resembling a high-end penthouse. On deck, your guests can swim from the aft platform, before enjoying a cool drink and grilled fish on the stainless steel grill that rises impressively out of the cockpit.

Designed and built for fun, as well as performance, the YBREEZE 75 allows guests to enjoy water sports equipment such as jet skis, surfboards and waterslides, all conveniently stored in the yacht's spacious garage. As an option, owners with smaller children or grandchildren can opt for a games room at the rear of the yacht.

SPORTING PERFORMANCE

If you're in the mood, the YBREEZE 75's competitive racing handicap rating, lightweight carbon fibre hull, powerful sail plan and dynamic water ballast make it possible to race competitively with a small crew of 6 or 7. The high aspect ratio torpedo keel and twin rudders make the Y75 BREEZE faster than a conventional 80-foot yacht. A displacement of 25.8 tonnes and 190 square metres of sail area means she sails effortlessly in the lightest Mediterranean breeze.

THE SIMPLICITY OF SAILING

Sailing the Y75 BREEZE is simple in the large cockpit, with all halyards, sheets and ropes concealed and leading aft. The high bulwark eliminates the need for stanchions and provides safe, dry sailing for guests in rough conditions. Electric push-buttons control the jib, self-tacking jib, mainsail and automatic furler for the code0 and gennaker. There is also an electric furling mainsail in the boom, while the hatches and companionway can be controlled remotely by smartphone.

OCEAN-FRIENDLY

To minimise the Y75 BREEZE's carbon footprint, we have invested in redesigning our yard in Greifswald, Germany, making all processes as sustainable as possible. For example, inside the boat, only veneers from exclusive furniture manufacturers are used and interior bulkheads are made from sustainable epoxy composites. To further reduce emissions, owners can choose between a zero-emission electric saildrive or a 100hp diesel saildrive running on synthetic fuel.

Y Yachts’ Y7 review: This powerful carbon cruiser is guaranteed to excite

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 5, 2020

Michael Schmidt’s powerful new Y7 combines genius ideas with a keep-it-simple theme, says Toby Hodges

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

What is your idea of simple sailing? To a wooden yacht enthusiast it may be the pleasure of hand hoisting and trimming sails via block and tackle alone, where an owner of a modern glassfibre yacht might baulk at the amount of upkeep timber demands and prefer the ease of push button sailing.

Others might look back whimsically to their youth and the joy of simply dragging a dinghy down the beach and sailing without any maintenance or financial woes.

Michael Schmidt ’s latest creation is his solution to simple sailing at the luxury end of the scale. The decorated sailor who founded Hanse Yachts believes in a keep-it-simple philosophy with his models, which you may find hard to believe when looking at this new 70-footer and the levels of technical complexity that must lie beneath its carbon fibre/epoxy skins.

y-yachts-y7-review-bow-credit-Nico-Krauss

We tested the Y7 off Mallorca in 7-12 knots. Photo: Nico Krauss

But having sailed the Y7 in precisely the light wind conditions for which it was designed, and felt the thrill of helming a perfectly balanced, potent and contemporary fast cruiser, I can vouch that it does have a theme of simplicity, which becomes dangerously enticing.

“Sailing fun is made possible by a simple ship that has been reduced to the bare essentials without sacrificing comfort,” Schmidt believes. We’re not talking a yacht stripped to engineless minimalism here. The Y7 is, to all intents and purposes, a scaled-down superyacht , which has been kept approachable, performance-oriented and comparatively easy to manage.

I quote Schmidt not simply because he is the founder of the company, but because he is a veteran boatbuilder, sailor and visionary of the industry. Having built up and then sold Hanse Yachts, and extensively cruised its largest model at the time, the 630e, he searched fruitlessly for a larger, lighter boat that could better harness the softer breezes typically found in the Mediterranean.

Advanced Yachts A80: Lightweight luxury cruiser can sail in the lightest breeze

A multitude of shiny new yachts drifted across the Bay of Cannes, like a painting of a seascape reflected in…

Michael Schmidt Yachtbau, now Y Yachts, is the brand of luxury carbon cruisers he created, a German firm that aims to use the best technology available to simplify the sailing. Schmidt also believes a yacht needs aesthetics that will distinguish it from the pack.

This philosophy underpinned his first model, the Brenta 80 (now Y8). Schmidt has since cruised that test boat, Cool Breeze , thousands of miles. And while many reportedly liked that concept and design style, they found it too large for their needs.

‘A 70ft yacht you can sail alone’ became Y Yachts’ target. The result is a fast cruiser with no backstay(s), a self-tacking jib and winches and lines that fall to the hand of the helmsman.

y-yachts-y7-review-helm-credit-german-de-soler

Toby helms and trims from the leeward deck. Photo: German de Soler

The design echoes the style of the Y8 and sees Schmidt maintain his penchant for high topsides (from his Hanse days), combined with a flat, low coachroof. Schmidt doesn’t like having to rely on crew and typically sails two-up.

Nevertheless the beamy and voluminous Y7 includes a crew cabin within the interior (rather than stuffed in the forepeak), with private access to the cockpit.

Bill Tripp was tasked with targeting lightweight performance to ensure the boat would offer enjoyable sailing in single figure windspeeds. A key attribute of the Y7 is that it shouldn’t need to motor in light airs.

That said, it can motor very efficiently thanks to the inclusion of two engines; Schmidt values low fuel consumption, good manoeuvrability and systems redundancy.

Carbon construction

Carbon sandwich construction with an epoxy outer skin results in a moderate/light displacement of 29 tonnes and a good balance of impact protection and noise control. Although Schmidt built some of the earliest carbon race yachts, he now subcontracts hull and deck moulding to specialist lamination yards in Poland and Slovenia, then fitting out in his new 3,000m 2 facility in Greifswald.

The structural work and finish of the first Y7, Bella , is certainly to a high standard, and the sub-€2m starting price for this 70ft carbon composite cruiser explains the appeal of the new design and demand to see it in action. The second hull has been handed over, the third is in build and the yard is now set up to produce one boat every four months.

The price is a significant factor. The Y7 represents is a lot of carbon yacht for the money. At this price point, potential buyers might be tempted to compare it to a large semi-production cruiser such the CNB 76 or Euphoria 68 . However, those who are looking for comparable performance would need to look at lighter composite yachts – and the Swan 65 , for example, costs another €1m.

Simply seductive

Bella certainly looked very much at home nestled among the superyachts at Port Adriano marina in Mallorca. The flat coachroof was adorned with sunbeds and a table and chairs were set up on its large flush foredeck.

The large bimini shading it hung from the mast, forestay and shrouds – a clever idea to use the foredeck to create a shaded area away from dock. Bella also has a removable cockpit bimini, mounted on four carbon posts.

When sail trialling a yacht, you always hope to get the type of conditions for which it is primarily designed. I favour moderate winds to ensure I can get a proper feel for the boat. So I did fret a little as we motored out of the marina and met a sloppy sea and a gentle breeze.

However, that long afternoon and evening we spent under sail proved perfect for demonstrating the Y7’s capabilities, and particularly for appreciating its ability to be able to keep on sailing in light winds.

In just 10 knots of breeze, typical midsummer Mediterranean conditions, we were already heeled and powered-up, sailing at 8-8.5 knots. The modern, beamy hull shape, with a long waterline and generous sail area, all help produce such speeds. The sail area to displacement ratio is a huge 33.4, a figure that confirms this design’s significant power aloft. Consequently, she will need to be reefed early.

y-yachts-y7-review-winch-credit-Nico-Krauss

Lines are led under deck to winches fore and aft of the wheels. This shows the starboard aft winch with shorepower connections below. Photo: Nico Krauss

The square-top fully battened mainsail has 184m 2 of sail area alone, which could be a lot to handle without sufficient crew. An upgrade to the winch package would be on my option list, as it took an age to hoist this sail from the lazyjacks.

However, the helmsman feels the benefit of this sailpower immediately. Tacking the boat is an addictive, one-person affair. The 30° sweptback spreaders avoid the need for a backstay, and allow the use of a self-tacking jib.

We found more breeze once out into the bay and continued our beat west away from the island. The outboard position of the wheel pedestals helps give the helmsman clear views over the flat, low coachroof.

y-yachts-y7-review-tender-garage-credit-Nico-Krauss

The huge aft deck raises on struts to reveal an enormous watertight garage for a 3.45m RIB, which is launched using a carbon pole off the boom’s aft end. The design allows the garage to remain sealed when the swim platform is lowered. Photo: Nico Krauss

The helm is generally light, as you’d expect with twin rudders, but with a pleasant increase in weatherhelm when the boat heels and powers up. There is also plenty of grip from these rudders, which are positioned relatively far outboard.

It is less comfortable for crew, however. Such is the beam aft (over 18ft) that it can feel unnerving to cross the cockpit or to stay seated to windward when at a high heeling angle. Comparable yachts of this size tend to have a mainsheet winch plinth with rails or a support/crash bar between the wheels. Y Yachts says it can offer the latter, which is an option I’d certainly recommend.

The long cockpit with split tables has room for eight to sit around, with more space on the large aft-facing seats. The portside seat has access to the crew quarters neatly integrated beneath. The aluminium frames that form the backrests for the cockpit seats are freestanding of the coamings, a clear indication that this boat is aimed at warm weather sailing.

y-yachts-y7-review-side-deck-credit-Nico-Krauss

Push button reaching

I thought the Y7 might be all about the upwind sailing experience, keeping the apparent windspeed up and heel on, but then we hoisted a Code 0 for the long reach back.

At the push of another pedestal button, an electric furler fitted in the end of the bowsprit unleashed an enormous amount of sail (acquired, it transpired, from a Maxi 72). With this code sail set, we picked up pace and were able to match the 7-11 knot wind speeds all the way home.

The single point mainsheet is led forward to the mast and aft to one winch. This arrangement, together with the other sheets and halyards, results in a mass of rope tails in the cockpit. Unusually (and commendably), there are generous-sized rope tail lockers between the winches to keep all these lines from getting too unruly.

The deck is stepped in line with where the guest cockpit meets the sailing cockpit, so there is easy access out onto the sidedecks. Here, the double guardrails reduce to single rails to meet the bulwark and pushpit.

This low rail invites the helmsman to sit right out to leeward and enjoy the clear views forward. However, the wide-open aft deck and low rail do little to promote a secure feeling if you are in the sailing cockpit.

Nevertheless, as I perched to leeward, and with a light hand on the wheel, the sailing was truly memorable, and we footed along effortlessly under the Code sail.

Two engines

The Y7 certainly has a slippery hull design – so much so that it was only as we approached the marina that I remembered that the Y7 is fitted with two shaft-drive propellers. Twin Nanni engines were chosen as they are simple to repair, with few electronics, and their relatively small size means the saloon sole and thus coachroof can be kept low and streamlined.

However, problems with the installation on this first boat resulted in unacceptable noise levels, an issue the yard now reports has been resolved. It says all future models will have saildrives.

Under power, the boat doesn’t quite spin on a point like a catamaran – the props are quite close together – but the twin engines certainly aid manoeuvrability and mean that you are much less reliant on the bowthruster.

y-yachts-y7-review-saloon-credit-Sichtvorteil-Thomas-Wilhelmi

Bella ’s modern open and inviting saloon. Note the sliding leather handles on the deckhead, which resemble underground train handles – a novel yet practical solution we first saw on the Y8. Photo: Sichtvorteil / Thomas Wilhelmi

Below decks, the styling matches the impressive look of the exterior, and is akin to a designer apartment. In Bella ’s case, it was customised specially for Michael Schmidt. Hull number two is said to have a much lighter, less masculine trim.

Schmidt was inspired by modern architectural designs he saw in Copenhagen, and this is reflected in the feel of the finish, from the choice of fabrics, to the lighting and overall interior shapes.

Smart thinking and styling

Multiple layout options are offered including three or four cabins, and the choice of a central transverse galley or passageway galley aft. Abaft the aft port cabin is a clever, if super-compact, crew cabin, which contains two bunks at right angles to each other, a heads and private access to the sailing cockpit.

y-yachts-y7-review-guest-master-credit-Sichtvorteil-Thomas-Wilhelmi

The forward cabin with huge island berth. A step up through a watertight bulkhead leads into the generous heads compartment forward. Photo: Sichtvorteil / Thomas Wilhelmi

The semi-raised saloon creates the impression of a huge space. The yacht’s large beam accentuates this by exposing the curves and structures of hull sides. On the test boat the saloon has a wide-open space extending as far as the galley, sited amidships. To help you traverse it, there are sliding leather grabhandles on the deckhead for when moving about.

I like the use of vertical glass coachroof windows, which let in plenty of light without producing too much heat, but to provide better ventilation I would prefer to have more opening portholes and some coachroof hatches.

The galley is relatively compact and is open along the centreline, a layout that is perhaps not ideally suited to life at heel. That said, it boasts a large area of fiddled work surfaces and generous amounts of refrigerated stowage, and the yard does offer the option of a larger, enclosed galley aft, which connects through to the crew accommodation.

A central island berth in the forward cabin suggests this, too, is designed more for use in port than at sea. Hull number two has an offset berth here, which will be more practical at sea.

The Y7 is undeniably a lovely yacht to spend time aboard and one that can be handled with relative ease. The ‘keep it simple’ philosophy is felt mostly in the sailing, trimming and manoeuvring. The helmsman can easily manage lines and controls from the wheel – though would need help with setting, stowing and reefing sails. From the design of the tender garage, the installation of twin engines to a myriad of neat fixtures and fittings, the Y7 is packed with novel ideas, all born out of Michael Schmidt’s enormous experience. Below decks the Y7 feels as much like a luxury apartment as a yacht, and the style can be customised to suit an owner. I loved the exterior and interior design of Bella, although I think the layout is more set up for use at rest than at sea. The contemporary styling is bound to divide opinion. But the Y7 boasts superyacht quality at a size that is properly rewarding to sail. This powerful yacht boasts a level of performance that is guaranteed to excite.

First look: Y Yachts’ Y Breeze – a 75ft daysailer? (sold with crew included!)

A brand new 75ft ‘luxury daysailer’ concept, the Y Breeze YB75, has been unveiled by Michael Schmidt’s Y-Yachts. Toby Hodges got an exclusive chat to the design team behind this radical luxury yacht

y yacht 75

YYachts

This innovative vessel combines the elegance of a sailing yacht with the convenience of a powerboat. Its key features include sporty performance, a luxurious interior, advanced technology and sharing possibilities. A wide range of customisable options ensure a unique sailing experience.

YYachts carefully selected the name Breeze for this exceptional boat to emphasise that it goes beyond being just a new model. Instead, it represents a new concept that revolutionises how people experience and connect with the sea.

YYachts

The naval architecture and the exterior design are made in collaboration with Cossutti Yacht Design. The YB75 is claimed to be the first sailing yacht with fold-down bulwarks to create a large aft deck to increase comfort at anchor.

The exterior impresses with clean lines and gives the YB75 a sporty character. Michael Schmidt, founder of YYachts, says: ‘YB75 is a yacht that is simply meant to be fun under sail and at anchor – we designed her so that our customers can simply concentrate on their leisure time.’

Developed in collaboration with Wendover Studio, the interior style is designed to guarantee an inviting, practical and elegant atmosphere. Materials are appropriately used, carefully detailed and coordinated to represent today’s luxury style.

People expect to feel at home of course, so the style can be customised following clients’ preferences. Co-founder of the studio is Gabriel Chipperfield, no less than the son of star architect David Chipperfield who was responsible for the interior of the very first YYacht.

Racing with small crew The stern platform of the YB75 folds out, making access to the water much easier than on many yachts. To enjoy the cockpit, the YB75 offers a galley coming up from the deck. It’s equipped with a sink, two fridges (one for drinks/one for food) and a barbecue grill. The entire deck is designed as a safe walk-around, with no steps in between. In order to be able to head for shallower anchorages, the telescopic keel can reduce the draught to 2.5m. Fenders are deployed via a special system and stowed on board to save space.

YYachts

On the lower deck there will be a flexible layout with a saloon and different configurations for the guest cabin (daybed, two single beds or one double). A playroom for kids can also be installed. To enjoy the Mediterranean summer, the YB75 offers different options of sun beds: stand-alone sun beds or a box with built-in gimbaled sun beds.

A good handicap makes the YB75 interesting for racing with a small crew (max six) and water ballast ensures high stability (big sailplan for performance). The naval architect considered the major wind configuration in the most popular Mediterranean areas – the rating, in comparison with other boats looks very favourable.

The YB75 is also extremely easy to sail. There are pushbuttons for the mainsail and self-tacking jib and furlers for code zero and gennaker.

Cossutti explains…

The design of the YBreeze 75 is truly unique. In her simplicity we’ve managed to incorporate a complete walk-around deck, a “hidden” coachroof, a social area with sofa and dining table and a huge lounge area with a beach club at the stern.

The style of the boat is defined by the port and starboard sheer lines that run all along the hull and meet at the stem, which is neither vertical nor reverse, it is just the arched Y-Yachts style.

YYachts

The nature of the bulwark makes it possible to integrate two folding terraces which, together with the bathing platform, create a unique access to the sea, all surrounded by couches and sunbeds to enjoy the sea. Thanks to the generous toy garage it is possible to enjoy the sea from every perspective with space for a jet-ski, SeaBobs, paddle boards and lots of other equipment to support every passion.

The spatial equations between the exterior and interior spaces have been redefined to enhance life on deck, making her the best place to enjoy Mediterranean living. The central cockpit galley creates the right atmosphere to bring people together and have fun at sunset.

On the other hand the interiors, designed by Wendover’s partners, can fit every need. The boat has a three-cabin and three-heads layout with a galley and saloon, plus the option of a multi-purpose children’s playroom and crew cabin.

We have studied the weather conditions of the main sailing events in the Mediterranean over the past year and have tailored the hull lines for medium to low wind speeds, resulting in a hull shape with a low wetted area and narrow width, which contributes to the overall slenderness of the design.

The boat has been designed to be easy to sail, even with a reduced crew. She offers a basic sail package consisting of square-top main, large self-tacking jib and code zero, to which a gennaker can be also added if needed for race purposes. All sail control lines are led to the pit winches, which are easy to operate without disturbing the guests on board.

The lifting keel, together with the double rudder, is the perfect equipment to reach almost any place without losing the pleasure of a real sailing session, but it is also possible to choose a fixed, high-performance 4.2m keel. All in all, we think that the YB75 fits perfectly into the YYachts motto: look good, sail easy!

YYachts

Ocean friendly construction The shipyard’s carbon footprint is constantly being reduced. YYachts reviews all processes in order to produce boats as climate-neutrally as possible. For the YB75, they only use wood and panels that interior outfitters of larger mega yachts provide as surplus. For the construction of the yacht, the shipyard will use sustainable epoxy and numerous eco-friendly products and materials.

The hull will be laminated in a female mould to achieve the shape defined by the naval architect and reduce to a minimum the fairing and the related additional weight. To achieve a maximum strength/light displacement ratio, the hull is made in a sandwich construction with Corecell M foam. The hull outer and inner skin and the inner structure will be built exclusively in carbon for maximum stiffness and weight saving.

The fibres will be impregnated with a high-performance epoxy laminating system and post-cured at a high temperature to exploit the fibre properties to the maximum. All bulkheads and internal structures are made in carbon/ epoxy sandwich, vacuum consolidated. The epoxy is sustainable and fire resistant. For more strength and better load distribution there are additional carbon fibre reinforcements around doors, cutouts and cable penetrations.

YYachts

Always available All YBreeze 75s will be delivered in sailing spots in Spain, France and Italy with a dedicated captain. Owners can also share the boat in this area and, using an app, they can book it. This feature, included in the price, will allow owners to always find the boat ready before their arrival. The sharing service can also be arranged on demand via the YYachts organisation.

Michael Schmidt says: ‘My credo has always been to reduce yachts to what is necessary without neglecting comfort. With the Y75, we have now developed a concept that even aligns the use of the yacht with this principle. This will also appeal to younger customers who are growing up with the sharing economy.‘

Tesla cuts US prices for 3 of its electric vehicle models after a difficult week

Tesla knocked $2,000 off the prices of three of its five models in the United States late Friday, another sign of the challenges facing the electric vehicle maker led by billionaire Elon Musk .

The company cut the prices of the Model Y, a small SUV which is Tesla’s most popular model and the top-selling electric vehicle in the U.S., and also of the Models X and S, its older and more expensive models. Prices for the Model 3 sedan and the Cybertruck stayed the same.

The cuts reduced the starting price for a Model Y to $42,990 and to $72,990 for a Model S and $77,990 for a Model X.

The move came the day after Tesla’s stock tumbled below $150 per share , eliminating all gains made over the past year. The Austin, Texas , company’s stock price has dropped about 40% so far this year amid falling sales and increased competition. Discounted sticker prices are a way to try to entice more car buyers.

Musk posted early Saturday on X, the social media platform known as Twitter before he acquired and renamed it, that the cost of an entry-level Tesla was as low as $29,490 once a federal tax credit and gas savings were factored in.

(AP Photo/David Zalubowski, File)

Industry analysts have been waiting for Tesla to introduce a small electric vehicle that would cost around $25,000, the Model 2. Media reports this month that Musk planned to scrap the project created more uncertainty over the company’s direction, although Musk called them untrue.

The price cuts ended a long workweek at Tesla, which announced Monday that it was cutting 10% of its staff globally , about 14,000 jobs. The company also said it was recalling nearly 4,000 of its 2024 Cybertrucks after discovering the accelerator pedal can get stuck, potentially causing the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally and increase the risk of a crash.

On Saturday, Musk confirmed he had postponed a planned weekend trip to India to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi , citing “very heavy Tesla obligations.” He said on X that he looked forward to rescheduling the visit for later this year.

Tesla is scheduled to announce its first-quarter earnings on Tuesday.

The company reported earlier this month that its worldwide sales fell sharply from January through March as competition increased worldwide, electric vehicle sales growth slowed, and earlier price cuts failed to lure more buyers.

It was Tesla’s first year-over-year quarterly sales decline in nearly four years.

Frederick Celani, Who Made a Career as a Con Man, Dies at 75

His serial frauds included a waterfront development in Buffalo, a civil rights law firm in California and a package delivery company in Springfield, Ill.

A black-and-white photo of a man with dark hair in a trench coat.

By Richard Sandomir

Frederick Celani was more than a decade into a rollicking, relentless career as a con man when he bamboozled city officials and employees in Springfield, Ill., into believing that he would make the city the hub of an overnight package delivery service.

It was 1983. Unemployment was high in Springfield, which needed the economic boost that Mr. Celani was promising. In a whirlwind few months, he hired 100 workers, including pilots; leased cars; and rented office space and an airplane hangar.

On March 1, about 1,000 people gathered at the hangar to celebrate Kayport Package Express’s first day in business. Champagne was served. A high school band played.

But it was over in four days. All the employees were laid off.

And Mr. Celani skipped town for Los Angeles, according to an account in a three-part series about him in The Standard Journal-Register of Springfield, which began in 2007.

The Kayport scheme — part of a broader fraud that involved bilking hundreds of investors around the country out of nearly $4 million for phony tax shelters and company stock — led to indictments against Mr. Celani (pronounced CHELL-ah-nee) and his partner, Aaron Binder, for racketeering, conspiracy, and mail and wire fraud charges.

Mr. Celani defended himself at his trial, with assistance from a lawyer, Jon Noll.

“To him, the trial was a tremendous amount of fun,” Mr. Noll told The Journal-Register. “It was a new adventure for him.”

Mr. Celani was sentenced to 15 years in prison — he served six — and Mr. Binder to 10 years.

The cons would continue after Mr. Celani was released.

“The thing that I thought was odd,” Bruce Rushton, who wrote the three-part series, said in a phone interview, “is that of all the people I talked to, nobody was mad at the guy.

“They saw the humor in it.”

Mr. Celani’s body was found on Feb. 7 in Queens, according to a listing on the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System that includes a postmortem photograph of his face. The New York City medical examiner’s office said the cause of death was cardiovascular disease. He was 75.

Frederick George Celani was born on Aug. 26, 1948, in Buffalo, to Joseph and Grace Celani. His father was a bus driver. The federal judge sentencing Mr. Celani in a real estate scheme in 2013 cited a presentencing report saying that he had been beaten by his father and brother when he was young.

Mr. Celani and his first wife, Anita Celani — they married in 1971 — eventually divorced. In 1991, she was convicted of second-degree murder for hiring a hit man to kill a later husband, Robert DiGiulio. Mr. Celani later married Mary Rudolph.

Information about his survivors was not immediately available.

By his own account, Mr. Celani never held a legitimate paying job. And while he took courses at Canisius College (now University) in Buffalo from 1976 to 1977, he did not matriculate.

His history of hoaxes began in his hometown. In 1974, he was sentenced to a year in prison for being the mastermind of a bogus plan to build a $100 million waterfront development — all while being held in the Attica Correctional Facility for another case that involved taking $2,000 from a couple for a house that he didn’t intend to build.

At his sentencing for the waterfront fraud, the judge, Robert F. Kiener of West Seneca, N.Y., said: “Robert Redford and Paul Newman received recognition for their roles as con men in ‘The Sting.’ But you, Mr. Celani, for your efforts, have been stung.”

Stung, perhaps, but unbowed. He enjoyed what he was doing too much to stop.

“He was smart, shrewd, a great talker with a baby face, friendly but never slick,” Mr. Rushton wrote in the Journal-Register series.

“You expect a con artist to be suave. He wasn’t,” Thomas Glascott, a retired Buffalo police lieutenant and district attorney’s investigator, was quoted as saying.

Soon after being released from prison in 1991 after serving time for the Kayport scheme, Mr. Celani turned up in North Hollywood, Calif., as Fred Sebastian, the founder of a civil rights law firm that he called the Center for Constitutional Law and Justice. He was not a lawyer, but he hired five attorneys to represent federal inmates, some of whom paid the center thousands of dollars, hoping to overturn their convictions or get them early release.

It was also a scam.

“He could sell ice to Alaskans and shampoo to the bald,” Alaleh Kamran, one of the center’s lawyers, told The San Francisco Examiner in 1993. “If you didn’t know he wasn’t an attorney, and I didn’t, he could really fool you.”

The center collapsed after Mr. Celani was arrested in 1992 for promising an inmate’s wife that he could get her husband released from prison if she gave him $50,000 to bribe the prosecutor in Little Rock, Ark. She told the F.B.I. about the offer and recorded a conversation with Mr. Celani about the bribe. He was convicted of eight counts of fraud and sentenced to seven years in prison.

At his sentencing, Mr. Celani claimed that his troubled life had its roots in his alcoholic parents’ kicking him out of their house, turning him into a “kid on the street.”

The judge called him a “human tragedy.”

In 2000, he was free again. Under the name the Rev. Bob Hunt, he reprised his earlier legal scam. Posing as a lawyer and also as a minister, he offered legal services to federal inmates. An estimated 150 inmates were defrauded of nearly $200,000, according to court documents.

“Needless to say,” Mr. Celani said at the 2013 hearing, “there’s a whole bunch of unhappy inmates coast to coast who would like to see me as soon as possible.”

He also started a congregation in East Peoria, Ill., where he once delivered a sermon called “Honesty.”

In 2004, he moved on to a real estate scheme on Long Island. Over the course of a year, he operated as a lawyer named Sidney Levine who, with at least two partners, cheated investors out of $8 million that the partners said they would use to buy, build and refurbish assisted living facilities, guaranteeing a 25 percent annual return. They paid about half the money to themselves and only $850,000 in interest to investors.

When F.B.I. agents confronted Mr. Celani at his office in 2005, he told them that he was a diabetic and needed his insulin. He left and did not return. Four years later, he was arrested near his office in Oakdale, N.Y., on Long Island — he had been on the F.B.I. most-wanted list as Sidney Levine — and revealed in a court appearance that he was Frederick Celani.

He spent the next nine years in prison and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. While incarcerated, he had three strokes and lost vision in one eye.

At his sentencing hearing in 2013, he said: “The first 64 years of my life is nothing to be proud of. What I did, I did. And I apologize to the court and to those I have harmed.”

Two months after his release in 2018, he described himself as a “homeless man” on a Facebook post that asked for donations to a GoFundMe campaign.

Richard Sandomir is an obituaries writer. He previously wrote about sports media and sports business. He is also the author of several books, including “The Pride of the Yankees: Lou Gehrig, Gary Cooper and the Making of a Classic.” More about Richard Sandomir

People wade through a submerged street after heavy rain in the United Arab Emirates

Desert city of Dubai floods as heaviest rainfall in 75 years hits UAE

City records more than 142mm of rain in a day, about as much as it expects in a year and a half, as highways and malls flooded

Highways and malls have been flooded, schools have been closed, and flights disrupted at one of the world’s busiest airports after the United Arab Emirates experienced what the government described as its largest amount of rainfall in 75 years.

At least one person was killed, a 70-year-old man who police said was swept away in his car in Ras Al Khaimah, one of the UAE’s seven emirates.

Footage from Dubai international airport showed passenger jets moving through deep water, spraying water in their wake, while photos captured city streets turned to rivers, with cars sitting abandoned in flood waters.

One man called the situation at the airport “absolute carnage”. “You cannot get a taxi. There’s people sleeping in the metro station. There’s people sleeping in the airport,” the man told Associated Press on condition of anonymity in a country with strict laws that criminalise critical speech.

Despite the widespread impact, authorities have remained tight-lipped on the extent of the damage.

The rains began on Monday night and by Tuesday evening more than 142mm (5.59in) had soaked the desert city of Dubai – normally the amount it gets in a year and a half.

Heavy rain also fell in Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman, where rescuers found the body of a girl in Saham, bringing the death toll in the country to 19 since Sunday.

What the desert city of Dubai looks like after its biggest rainfall in 75 years – video

In an average year, there is 94.7mm (3.73in) of rain at Dubai international airport, the world’s busiest for international travel and a hub for the long-haul carrier Emirates. On Wednesday, it said it had experienced “significant disruption”.

EgyptAir suspended flights between Cairo and Dubai until the conditions improve.

Paul Griffiths, the airport’s CEO, said the situation remained incredibly challenging. “In living memory, I don’t think anyone has ever seen conditions like it,” he told the state-owned talk radio station Dubai Eye. “We are in uncharted territory.”

Some media reports suggested the rains may have been made worse by cloud seeding, a common practice in the dry Emirates to encourage clouds to produce precipitation by releasing salt particles into the air, often using planes. The salt released in cloud-seeding operations helps water droplets to form, increasing the chance of rain.

However, the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), which oversees cloud-seeding operations in the UAE, told CNBC that no missions had been dispatched for seeding operations before or during the turbulent weather episode.

Omar Al Yazeedi, the deputy director general of the NCM, said: “We did not engage in any seeding operations during this particular weather event. The essence of cloud seeding lies in targeting clouds at an earlier stage, prior to precipitation. Engaging in seeding activities during a severe thunderstorm scenario would prove futile.”

Maarten Ambaum, a professor of atmospheric physics and dynamics at the University of Reading, said he had spoken to meteorologists at the NCM who had denied cloud seeding had taken place.

“Cloud seeding, certainly in the Emirates, is used for clouds that don’t normally produce rain … You would not normally develop a very severe storm out of that,” he said, adding that it would be “totally pointless” to try to seed clouds that were already likely to produce downpours. “Even if you did go out, there is no way you could find a measurable difference.”

He added: “In the 50s and 60s, people still thought about using cloud seeding to produce these big weather events, or change these big weather events. This [has] long been recognised as just not a realistic possibility.”

Rain is unusual in the UAE but occurs periodically during the cooler winter months.

Homes were flooded and vehicles were abandoned on roadways across Dubai, and authorities sent tanker trucks into the streets to pump away the water. Many roads and other areas lack drainage given the rarity of regular rainfall.

The major shopping centres Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates experienced flooding, and there was ankle-deep water in at least one Dubai Metro station, according to images posted on social media.

Lightning was seen flashing across the sky, occasionally touching the tip of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.

A vehicle in flood water

The NCM in a post on X urged residents to “take all the precautions … and to stay away from areas of flooding and water accumulation”.

The UAE government media office posted on X that the downpours were an “exceptional” climate event.

Schools will remain closed in Dubai until next week, authorities said, underscoring the difficulty of the clean-up, and the government extended remote working for its employees.

The weather system had already caused floods across Bahrain and left 19 people dead in Oman, including 10 schoolchildren swept away in a vehicle.

Human-caused climate breakdown is supercharging extreme weather across the world, driving more frequent and more deadly disasters from heatwaves and wildfire to floods. At least a dozen of the most serious events of the last decade would have been all but impossible without human-caused global heating.

Cars lie half-submerged in a flooded street in Dubai on Tuesday.

Extreme rainfall is more common and more intense because of human-caused climate breakdown across most of the world. This is because warmer air can hold more water vapour. It is most likely that flooding has become more frequent and severe as a result.

Ambaum said the world should expect more extreme weather events. He said: “We have been saying for several decades now that in a changing climate we will probably get more of these kinds of severe events, and indeed this is happening.”

EASY TO SAIL distinct simplicity

Y7 - easy to sail distinct simplicity.

A displacement of about only 29 tons and 300 square meters of sail area, set this almost 22 meter, 70 foot, long yacht in motion even in the lightest of winds. Her good ballast ratio keeps her very stable, so that a Y7 is extremely pleasant to sail. This luxury yacht was designed for family vacations as it can be operated with a very small crew or even alone. The new interior of the Y7

Timeless and maritime.

We have once again revised and optimized the interior of our popular Y7. The color tones are dominated by light fabrics and woods, giving the interior a timeless and modern touch.

Sailing Faster

A Y7 is much faster than a conventional 65 or 70 foot yacht. Our goal is to experience sailing fun in the Mediterranean with light winds.

Easy Handling

All halyards, sheets and trimming lines run concealed to the steering positions - so the helmsman can operate the Y7 alone at any time.

Proven Technology

YYachts only uses components that have proven themselves hundreds of times. Days lost due to vulnerable technology are a no-go on this luxury 70 foot carbon yacht.

Light-weight Construction

By using carbon fiber and lightweight construction material in the interior, we achieve a high sail area/displacement ratio.

Variable Layout
