UKOPRA British Offshore Championships: Local powerboat racers Rob Lister and Nick Crouch full speed ahead Lymington return

powerboat race lymington

New Forest’s Rob Lister and Nick Crouch took third place in the latest UKOPRA British Offshore Championships round ahead of a return to Lymington after more than a 10-year hiatus.

The former British champions come into the Lymington race – the first time the championships have raced in Lymington since 2010 – in good form and were leading their class until a mechanical failure resulted in the duo slipping back into third.

The second round race of the UKOPRA British Offshore championships was a 51-nautical mile course around the Isle of Wight, with 26 teams racing, including a class one team from Sweden.

Conditions were split, with the start legs from the eastern Solent to the Needles being favourable and the legs from the Needles to Bembridge rough and rugged for the class three boats.

A great battle for first took place between the two class one outer limits boats, with four seconds separating the two at the finish. Averaging 86.43mph, Rob Lockyer and Scott Younger took the honours, narrowly defeating Miles Jennings and Drew Langdon.

The local offshore team of Keyhaven’s Lister and Milford’s Crouch led class 3D until the Needles, where a fuel filter housing failed, resulting in lost fuel pressure and power. Despite the disadvantage, the team crossed the line third in their class.

Meanwhile, the Ringwood-based offshore race team of Clive Prestige and Scott Weldon finished first in the 115hp class 3B.

In the past, Royal Lymington Yacht Club hosted the Lymington race from their Bath Road home, but this year’s iteration will be staged at Berthon Marina.

Nick Crouch told the A&T: “The last Lymington challenge race took place in 2010, so it’s great to have this race back on the calendar. Back then, Rob was racing it while I was safety cover in my charter RIB.

“As a race team, it’s our home race, and although both Rob and I have spent a lifetime out there, and local knowledge helps, the weather and tide dictate what kind of day we will be having – a good day is finishing with fewer bruises and everything where it should be.”

“Ideal conditions would be a slight chop which helps break the hull drag, a rolling swell with no wave crests is amongst the most dangerous conditions, found usually at the Needles bridge and south Christchurch bay.”

The 73-nautical mile race will be a rolling start commencing at Lymington Bank buoy, west Solent, with the course passing Hurst Castle before heading along the shingle bank to Northhead buoy near Hengisbury Head. Two laps of Christchurch Bay follow before heading back up the Solent past the Needles to east Lepe and back down to the finish line, just north of the Lymington Bank buoy.

Crouch added: “Our team MADCRAB Offshore Racing Team, would like to thank our sponsors Mark Cutler Auto Motive and Solent Projects, also Tony Hope, our engineer.”

World Powerboat Events and Bligh Julius of Onyx Events have organised the race.

The UKOPRA British Offshore Championships third round is based at Berthon Marina, Lymington, on 8th July, with the race starting at 1pm – for more information about the course, race boat viewing times, and events, visit rb.gy/k1zsm

TESTIMONIAL - WHAT DO THE SALAMANDER SAILING ADVENTURE GUESTS SAY ?

"Although the weather was not ideal I had a very enjoyable day aboard this very classy sailing boat. We sailed round to Bucklers Hard from Lymington where we had time to explore this historical village after lunch. Motoring up and down the Beaulieu River is idyllic. It is like another world. Very peaceful. Seeing it from the deck of a boat is perfect. Especially one so well appointed with a large deck area to relax on. Sailing backwards and forwards across the Solent made the return journey invigorating. The power and majesty of the boat was enjoyed both by those who had sailed before and those who hadn't. The whole experience was memorable and to be recommended."
