Hands-On: Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Watch Reference 226627 In RLX Titanium

yacht master sapphire

The visceral experience of wearing the Yacht-Master 42 titanium is very odd for any long-time Rolex fan. Rolex more or less helped create the 20th-century notion that you can often measure the value of a watch by feeling how solid and weighty it is. Rolex watches have never been designed for lightness, so most of them are quite hefty, and beloved for that reason. It is common for someone to admire a precious metal Rolex simply by feeling its mass in the open palm of your hand.

yacht master sapphire

The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 was introduced in 2019 with tones very similar to this titanium model, but rather in 18k white gold and on a black Rolex Oysterflex strap. A yellow gold version was eventually added, and it seemed as though Rolex’s largest Yacht-Master was destined to be a precious-metal-only product. The 2023 226627 Yacht-Master 42 changes that paradigm by adding in a full grade 5 titanium case and matching bracelet to the product family. This is what people should consider the first “wearable” Rolex watch produced from titanium.

Even though Rolex uses the same grade 5 titanium as other brands, it focuses a lot on surface finishing and polishing for this timepiece. Rolex uses a sort of deep-grain engraving, which is somewhat different from the same effect on steel. Titanium as a color is also a bit darker than the comparatively bright 904L steel that most other (non-precious metal) Rolex sport watches are made out of. Titanium does scratch, and I asked Rolex about the service plan for the Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium. To make a long story short, Rolex will offer the same “case refresh” service for its titanium watches as it does for its steel and gold watches, though in reality, Rolex will have to use some special processes to polish titanium so that it looks fresh and new again. “RLX titanium” is really just Rolex’s way of indicating that it polishes and finishes titanium metal differently from other brands (according to Rolex).

yacht master sapphire

Other than being in titanium with the matching bracelet, there isn’t too much new here. The Yacht-Master 42 case is 42mm-wide and has similar proportions as other watches in the larger Oyster Perpetual watch. The case is water resistant to 100 meters, and around the dial is a uni-directional rotating bezel with a matte-black ceramic insert that matches the matte-dark-gray tone of the Yacht-Master 42 dial.

Inside the watch is the Rolex in-house-made caliber 3235 automatic movement that operates at 4Hz with about 70 hours of power reserve. The movement offers the time with date and on the sapphire crystal is a Rolex “cyclops” magnifier lens. Titanium is considered by many engineers to be the perfect material for wristwatch cases. While I don’t think it is possible to ever determine “bests” in regard to an emotional product, it is true that you can easily enjoy the Yacht-Master 42 in titanium from purely a tool watch perspective. The lighter weight and large size give this 42mm-wide Rolex an interesting and desirable personality. It also makes us wonder whether or not there will be more titanium Rolex watches in the future. Possibly some, but I don’t think that Rolex, primarily a maker of conspicuous jewelry-style watches, will heavily focus on a material that will not hold a high polish as nicely as steel, gold, or platinum watches.

yacht master sapphire

For watch lovers and Rolex collectors, there really is a lot of novelty to wearing a Rolex watch in titanium simply because most people haven’t ever done so before. The sister brand Tudor has had the Pelagos, which, for a while, was really the more sober equivalent of this Rolex Yacht-Master 42 226627. It is also much less expensive, but it doesn’t have the iconic Oyster Perpetual case shape and the famous Submariner-style dial that this Yacht-Master does.

While the Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium raises a lot of interesting philosophical questions about what Rolex should and shouldn’t be doing, the product will be a commercial success given the current latent demand for high-end titanium sport watches and anything even remotely interesting from Rolex. Rolex has made it clear that production of the titanium Yacht-Master 42 is going to be limited in scope, in large part because there are so many pieces of titanium in the case, and especially the bracelet, that all need to bear precisely matching polishes and finishes. I don’t imagine that this watch is easy for Rolex to make, but we do know that Rolex could increase production of titanium watches if it ever wanted to. Price for the very interesting and comfortable reference 226627 Rolex Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium is $14,050 USD . Learn more at the Rolex watches website here .

Rolex Bezels: How to Use the Yacht-Master Bezel

Rolex Yachtmaster 268622

When Rolex developed the Yacht-Master in 1992, the company sought to create a top-shelf version of the Submariner diver’s watch. Rumor has it that Rolex wasn’t quite brave enough to make any drastic changes to the design of the iconic Submariner itself, resulting in the Rolex Yacht-Master being added to the catalog as a separate model.

Both watches may look similar with the use of a dial topped with lume, a robust Oyster case, and a timing bezel, but they serve two very different functions. With a build similar to the Submariner, you can expect some of the Yacht-Master’s key functions to operate in the same way. However, while the Submariner is meant for use far below the surface of the ocean, the Yacht-Master is better suited for the decks of a yacht. Since its release over 20 years ago, the Rolex Yacht-Master has become a highly sought-after timepiece, thanks to a blend of bold aesthetics, quality craftsmanship, premium materials, and plenty of variety.

Getting back to the Yacht-Master’s status as a sports watch as well as a boating watch, the bezel’s primary function is to measure amounts of time while at sea, as well as sync with race start times during a regatta. Read on to find out how to use the Rolex Yacht-Master bezel – whether you’re sailing or not.

Rolex Yacht-Master as a Tool Watch

As its name would suggest, the Rolex Yacht-Master was developed as a tool-watch for sailing, offering water-resistance up to 100 meters (330 feet) via a Triplock screw-down crown, a highly legible dial, and a bidirectional rotating timing bezel. It’s worth noting that the Yacht-Master was initially only offered in an all-gold finish, with more affordable two-tone options hitting the market in the subsequent years.

Today, the Yacht-Master is the most varied Rolex sports watch collection, available in several sizes, materials, and colorways. Tapered lugs complement the luxurious style of the bezel, which features a matte finish with glossy raised numerals. This gives the Rolex Yacht-Master a refined appearance that stands apart from the more tool-oriented Submariner.

Depending on the reference, the Rolex Yacht-Master bezel is either crafted from sandblasted precious metals or matte black Cerachrom ceramic. The 60-minute timing bezels of the Yacht-Master are distinguished by raised markings, which include numerals and batons. Unlike the unidirectional bezel of the Submariner, the timing bezel on the Yacht-Master is capable of rotating both ways.

How to Use the Yacht-Master Bezel to Sync with Regatta Start Times

A regatta is a sporting event involving a series of yacht races, and the races have timed starting sequences. Boats have to sail back and forth behind the starting line during the countdown sequence without crossing the line too early (an early start leads to a penalty). Therefore, the Yacht-Master bezel can be used to sync with the official countdown to the race start time. Consequently, it’s especially beneficial that the Rolex Yacht-Master bezel has graduations for the first 10 minutes.

To operate the bezel on the Rolex Yacht-Master, all the user needs to do is simply align the zero position on the bezel (the inverted triangle) with the minute hand, then use the 10-minute hashes to count down to the race start time. For instance, if the countdown is three minutes, then the user has to start when the minute hand reaches the third graduation on the bezel.

Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Platinum Bezel Blue Dial Rolesium

How to Use the Yacht-Master Bezel to Measure Elapsed Time

Measuring elapsed time with the Yacht-Master bezel is pretty straightforward up to 60 minutes. This would come in handy to calculate the sailing time between two buoys. To start, rotate the bezel in either direction to sync the zero market with the minute hand. Once finished, the minute hand will point to the amount of time that has passed against the 60-minute scale on the bezel.

For example, if it is 10:21 at the start of an event, rotate the bezel until the zero position lines up with the minute hand at the 21st minute. Once the event is over, look at where the minute hand points to on the bezel and it will tell you how many minutes have passed. For instance, if the minute hand points to 35 on the bezel, 35 minutes have elapsed since the timer started.

Although these options are useful while sailing, many of us won’t have this need in our everyday lives, as sailing is a niche sport. Thankfully, the Rolex Yacht-Master’s timing capabilities can be used for any event, be it another type of race, or even to time something as quotidian as keeping track of the time left on a parking meter or boiling an egg on the stove!

The 7 largest Russian cities WITHIN the Arctic Circle

Winter Vorkuta.

Winter Vorkuta.

About 20 percent of Russian territory is situated above the Arctic Circle. Over 2.3 million people live there. It’s not very convenient to live in private houses in such a climate, so the entire Arctic population of Russia essentially lives in cities. That's the reason why several Russian cities have become the largest in the entire Arctic.

1. Murmansk (population of 267,422)

yacht master sapphire

The world's largest Arctic city is located in Russia. Murmansk (68°58′) is about 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. One of Russia's largest ports is located there, in the Kola Bay of the Barents Sea.

Murmansk was founded in 1916 and, during the 20th century, it "entered the annals of history" on more than one occasion. During the period of the Bolshevik Revolution, it was the center of the White Movement and the base of the interventionists, while during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), it was completely destroyed ( read more about it here ). Today's Murmansk comprises panel-built apartment blocks (made with prefabricated concrete slabs) built in the 1960-1980s and a small number of brick houses dating from the 1950s. Of course, it also has modern shopping centers and residential complexes.

In many of Russia's northern cities, it is customary to decorate the façades of buildings with colorful murals and graffiti. Such unusual neighborhoods can be found on the outskirts of Murmansk , too.

2. Norilsk (175,237)

yacht master sapphire

The second most populous Arctic city in the world is also located in Russia. Norilsk (Krasnoyarsk Territory) sits 300 km north of the Arctic Circle (69°20′).

The mining city was founded in 1935 (and granted city status in 1953); moreover, initially, up to the 1950s, it was built using forced labor.

Living conditions in Norilsk are among the harshest in Russia. It is all because of the horrendous winds that rage there in addition to the long, snowy winters. At the same time, it remains a major industrial city: Nickel, copper, cobalt and palladium are mined and processed there.

Norilsk may seem on photographs like a typical Soviet industrial city with a beautiful center in Stalinist Empire Style, multi-colored "panelki" (panel-built apartment blocks) and an industrial zone. But, there are also incredibly interesting architectural features that allow one to get on with life, even in a blizzard. Read about them here .

3. Vorkuta (56,985)

yacht master sapphire

This is Europe's easternmost city and the fourth largest city in the Arctic (after Norway's Tromsø). Vorkuta (67°30′) was founded in 1936 and coal is still mined there. Coal-mining settlements are situated around Vorkuta and linked to form a "ring".

The population grew until 1991 and, by the time of the collapse of the USSR, it had reached 117,000 (216,000 including the outer areas). As a result of the disintegration of the old economic system and the acute economic crisis, Vorkuta's population began to plummet. As a reminder of that period, you can today see districts and even whole settlements reduced to "ghost towns". And because of this, apartments are considered to be among the cheapest in Russia.

4. Apatity (48,748)

yacht master sapphire

This Murmansk Region city is the world's fifth largest located above the Arctic Circle (67°34′). It was founded in 1926 as a settlement for the builders of the Murmansk Railway. It started to grow and develop dynamically in the period of industrialization, when a deposit of apatite ores was discovered in the area.

Today, Apatity is also a popular tourist destination. Visitors are attracted to the area by fantastic views of the Khibiny Mountains and Lake Imandra .

5. Severomorsk (43,394)

yacht master sapphire

The world's sixth largest city inside the Arctic Circle (69°04′) is also in the Murmansk Region -  just 25 km from Murmansk itself. People started settling in Severomorsk (literally, “Northern Sea”) in the late 1890s, but it was only granted city status in 1951.

The city is the base for Russia's Northern Fleet and has the status of a closed town (literally "closed administrative-territorial unit" - abbreviated in Russian to ‘ZATO’), which means that people who have no business there are not expected to visit. Nevertheless, tourists do come, but only after having received permission in advance and having purchased a holiday package from local tour operators.

6. Monchegorsk (39,477)

yacht master sapphire

Another large industrial city in the Murmansk Region (67°56′) is Monchegorsk, which was founded in 1935 (acquiring city status in 1937) as a result of the exploitation of copper and nickel deposits in a very picturesque location. On one side lie the shores of lake Imandra and, on the other, the Monchetundra mountain group. On one of the summits, incidentally, is the popular ‘Loparstan’ ski resort, where the slopes are open for skiers as early as November.

7. Kandalaksha (28,438)

yacht master sapphire

Even one of the southernmost cities of Murmansk Region is still north of the Arctic Circle. Kandalaksha (67°09′) is one of the oldest Pomor settlements on the White Sea, founded as far back as 1526 (the Pomors are descended from generations of fishermen who are credited with creating the civilization of the Russian North. Read more about them here ). But people lived in this region even earlier - possibly several thousand years ago. There are mysterious stone labyrinths in the vicinity whose purpose has not yet been established.

The sawmilling industry started developing in the area in the late 19th century and, subsequently, the railway and a maritime port were built. An aluminum plant was also established in the Soviet period - still the only one within the Arctic Circle. It continues to operate to this day.

Extra: Salekhard (48,619)

yacht master sapphire

Salekhard, the administrative center of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, is also an Arctic city. It is the world's only city through which the reference line of the Arctic Circle (66°32′) actually passes. Unlike other cities on our list, it has a polar day but not a polar night.

There are no polluting factories there and a large proportion of its residents have regular jobs in offices, schools and stores, while also constantly helping to develop tourism. If you happen to be in Salekhard at the end of March, incidentally, you can also attend a very colorful city festival - Reindeer Herders' Day. Every year, the people of the tundra come to the city with herds of reindeer and give local residents a chance to get to know their culture ( our report on the festival can be found here ).

The art of command

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II in 18 ct yellow gold with an Oyster bracelet and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a blue Cerachrom insert .

Ring command bezel, a synchronized countdown.

Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.

As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

A characteristic aesthetic

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch.

A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand. The Yacht-Master II’s countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

18 ct yellow gold

Commitment to excellence

By operating its own exclusive foundry, Rolex has the unrivalled ability to cast the highest quality 18 ct gold alloys. According to the proportion of silver, copper, platinum or palladium added, different types of 18 ct gold are obtained: yellow, pink or white.

They are made with only the purest metals and meticulously inspected in an in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment, before the gold is formed and shaped with the same painstaking attention to quality. Rolex's commitment to excellence begins at the source.

The Oyster bracelet

Alchemy of form and function.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.

Solution of the Cauchy Problem for the Three-Dimensional Telegraph Equation and Exact Solutions of Maxwell’s Equations in a Homogeneous Isotropic Conductor with a Given Exterior Current Source

For the solution of the Cauchy problem for the linear telegraph equation in three-dimensional space, we derive a formula similar to the Kirchhoff one for the linear wave equation (and turning into the latter at zero conductivity). Additionally, the problem of determining the field of a given exterior current source in an infinite homogeneous isotropic conductor is reduced to a generalized Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional telegraph equation. The derived formula enables us to reduce this problem to quadratures and, in some cases, to obtain exact three-dimensional solutions with a propagating front, which are of great applied importance for testing numerical methods for solving Maxwell’s equations. As an example, we construct the exact solution of the field from a Hertzian dipole with an arbitrary time dependence of the current in an infinite homogeneous isotropic conductor.
