Life Rings: Why Simple Isn’t Easy

  • By Mario Vittone
  • Updated: December 17, 2012

Life ring secured to rail

Maybe it’s just a leftover quirk from my old job, but when it comes to safety and survival equipment , I always like to see stuff work. With so much time around things gone wrong, I’ve developed a pragmatic “let’s try it out” approach to everything. One unlikely piece of gear that I’ve seen go very wrong (very often) is life rings. I know, right – how can a circular tube fail? They are the simplest piece of rescue equipment ever made. All they have to do is be round and float, but look around your own marina and you will see them reduced to uselessness all the time.

When you are on your boat next, do me a favor: try it out. Take your Type IV throwable PFD – life ring, horse collar, cushion – and throw it overboard. Time yourself. If it took you more than three to five seconds, things just went wrong. Look at the life ring in the photo above. To effectively use that particular life ring you would have to untie the small line securing it at the rail, and then unravel the polypropylene line before giving it a heave. I’m guessing, but I’m betting that would take longer than five seconds.

Throwable PFDs are about unexpected man-overboard situations where time is everything, especially in winter months . Most people who fall overboard don’t do it on flat calm days, so seas and weather may make the safe and speedy turn to retrieve your crew member more difficult than you imagined.

Set up your life rings (or whatever throwable device you chose) for speed. They should be able to be removed from the cradle or dropped from the rail almost immediately – without any more than a lift or a tug from a single securing line. If they are equipped with a retrieval line, secure them in such a way that they are ready to be used without any extra effort. I’ve seen retrieval lines secured using easily breakable thread in all variations of fancy loops or stars, but my favorite method for keeping these lines straight is the use of throw bags. These neat pouches keep the line from becoming tangled, protect the line from sun damage, and allow the line to pay out without any real intervention from the user.

Whatever your set-up is and whichever throwable PFD you chose to keep aboard, what matters most is that it works when you need it. Having them aboard isn’t enough. You have to spend time actually seeing the things work. They don’t throw themselves and set-up and practice can make the difference between a quick and easy toss, and a fifteen second (too long) struggle to use the simplest piece of safety gear on your boat.

Life Ring Mounting Ideas

Being the romantic fool that I am, I bought the Admiral a new life ring for the boat for Christmas. I know, I know . . . half you guys reading are embarrassed because you opted for a silk scarf, a diamond necklace or a Lexas. Fools, all! Well, now that I've wooed her sufficiently, I need to mount it appropriately so it's quick to attach and easy to deploy. I plan on using a Velcro strap on the inside of our unused kicker rail mount and include about 75' of thin floating line. Unless the mother-in-law is aboard, it'll be leaded line! (Kidding, I love my mother-in-law to tears) Anybody have any other good ideas? Pics would be nice too. And next Christmas, I won't cry "foul!" if somebody uses my idea.

They make life ring hangers specifically for this purpose. Why improvise?

I think it important to have one throwable available that is not attached to the boat when deployed. If the MOB misses the horseshoe that would mean he has nothing to hang onto until the boat can make another pass. I think it is easier for the MOB to swim to a stationary horseshoe than to catch on that is moving. I do have a lifesling, but my first thing over would be the unattached throwable.

RECESS

I am pretty sure my unattached throw-able horseshoe life ring would knock someone out cold if it landed on their head. That thing is dense, but floats.

I am think of getting one of these in place of my MOB pole. I also have a horseshoe type and a Lifesling. http://marine.the-justgroup.com/man-overboard-buoy/

My horseshoe has a length of line attached so I figured that's the way its done. Shows what I know. I've looked at the commercially available mounts abd quite frakly, they look like an accident with my wife's name all over it. She skins and bleeds VERYeasily. So I' m trying to stay with soft stuff.

After reading how difficult it would be to actually retrieve an MOB, we opted for a wetsuit and shark repellent.

It's a good idea to have aline attached to the horseshoe or ring NOT attached to the boat. Makes it easier for the MOB to get to the buoy. When we replaced our old faded horseshoe a few years ago, we (The Admiral) got msart and we keep it down below when not in use. I don't even bother putting it out when I'm out singlehanding. Just use what Don suggested - an existing horseshoe buoy holder on the pushpit.

thinwater

Velcro is poor in the sun. Knots jam in a rush. Try a strope or soft shackle varient (can be made from materials other than Amsteel); easy to release.

Perhaps the answer is a CG approved throwable seat cushion or two. Not as good as a horseshoe, but maybe good enough if you are on an inland lake or protected bay. Another idea is to attach it with whipping thread. Use enough that it will stay where you put it, but will break away with a good with good swift tug. I use that system on a boarding ladder that I can access if I'm in the water.

Tom J

We have both the throwable horseshoe and the Lifesling. The horseshoe hangs on a holder on the starboard side of the stern rail, and the Lifesling hangs on the port side of the bimini with the bitter end of its line tied to the stern cleat with a bowline. Both hang outside the cockpit but are easily accessible. I think it is important to secure the line for the Livesling at all times. Things happen too quickly in a real MOB situation to take the time to secure lines, etc.

FlorDLuna

Here's my question: if use a throwable untethered horseshoe, and a MOB pole, do I tether the MOB pole to the horseshoe even though neither is tethered to the boat? And for night sailing, if I add a water activated floating strobe, to I also tether that to the horseshoe? Toss all three overboard together?

Lifesling Inspection Tips

life ring on a sailboat

For many sailors in the northern hemisphere winter is the off-season, which means it’s a great time inspect safety gear. Personal floatation devices (lifejackets) and throwable rescue aids (Lifeslings, horseshoe buoys) that incorporate materials that degrade over time deserve particularly close attention.

A few years back we received a letter from a reader describing the deterioration of the webbing beckets on their Lifesling . These are the loops of webbing that attach to the rescue retrieval line. The Lifesling appeared to be particularly old and was likely stored without a case and fully exposed to UV during part of its life. The original Lifesling was sold with storage bags that were notorious for falling apart, so the deterioration was no surprise. Fortunately, the new Lifesling2 is much improved over the original version.

We have a Lifesling2 aboard one PS test boat that’s nearly 20 years old; while the original case it’s always stored in has been doctored over time and is now on its last legs, the Lifesling2 float, webbing beckets, and polypropylene float line are in pristine condition.

Developed by The Sailing Foundation , Lifeslings have been in production for almost 40 years. The original Lifesling pre-dated its US Coast Guard certification, so the materials may not meet the current standards, which stipulate the types of materials suitable for construction. Over time, even the designated materials are susceptible to environment factors—UV rays, extreme cold, acid rain, biological growth, etc.

Even new safety equipment that meets USCG standards deserves close inspection. Probably the most startling failure we’ve experienced in safety equipment was a newly bought child’s safety harness with a polypropylene safety tether that immediately broke under very little load. The cause appeared to be UV exposure, and since the tether was new, we could only surmise that the device had been part of a window display, or had somehow been exposed to UV for a prolonged period before purchase.

Current Lifeslings, approved as Type IV (throwable) or Type V (special use) flotation devices, use the same polypropylene webbing commonly used on personal flotation devices (PFDs) and have all been tested to meet the webbing requirements for USCG-approved PFDs, according to the Lifesling’s distributor West Marine. This includes a minimum strength and resistance to weathering.

Polypropylene webbing’s UV resistance and longevity can vary greatly; some studies have shown that it can lose 20 to 75 percent of its strength per year. Nylon webbing, which the current Lifesling2 uses, loses about 10 percent of its strength per year. Polyester webbing loses only about 5 percent of its strength per year, which would seem to make it an even better choice of material. Fortunately, the Lifesling2 is designed so that the beckets are not exposed to UV when it’s stored properly in a good-condition bag or rigid case.

The Lifesling owners manual does not offer a timeframe for regular maintenance, inspection, or replacement, and the device’s longevity would be dependent upon a number of factors, including how it is stored, how often it’s used, and the environmental conditions where it’s stored. Hence the need for regular inspection, just as you would a PFD, and regular drills to determine whether the Lifesling can still handle the load of lifting crew.

Throwable Rescue Aid Recommendations

  • Inspect Lifeslings of any age for UV damage (beckets, stitching, webbing tether, poly float line, horeshoe float); animal damage (the poly line makes a nice chew toy for squirrels and mice); or potential weak spots. Any degradation requires that the whole device be replaced.
  •   Load test the Lifesling regularly, especially if yours is an older model or if you plan to take it offshore.
  •   Pay close attention to the health of the storage bag or case. The bags’ Velcro closure often allows a gap in the top that can leave the float exposed to UV; consider replacing the Velcro with a closure that does not have a gap. OEM replacement bags ($50) are not high-quality or durable, in our opinion; Sunbrella bags ($80) are a better choice; rigid cases ($220) are the most durable option and are recommended for offshore use.
  •   Unpack and repack the Lifesling annually. Be sure that all critical parts are protected from the sun. For a good how-to on packing the Lifesling properly, visit http://theboatgalley.com/is-your-lifesling-ready-for-use-are-you-sure/. Also check safetyharnesses for their tendency to drown you while being towed alongside… as far as I know there exists only one that has a real solution – the Backtow by TeamO – but I may be mistaken…

There is a hard box for storage and I take mine below as with all safety kit, when not using the boat.

I’m on my third bag. I would make my own out of Sunbrella, which lasts pretty much forever, but then the printed instructions would be missing. I don’t think the Lifesling will last long out of the bag. Surprisingly, the velcro loops (made of nylon) seems to last, while the bag material just disintegrates.

Barry, the instructions are easily reprinted by any local sign company that does digital printing and then applying it to a thin piece of pvc and sewing it onto the Sunbrella.

No one can dispute the poor quality of the Lifesling bag but how many of you have tried to practice retrieve a man overboard. We did so years ago as a yacht club learning exercise. The object was to lift someone on board only. Most of the man overboard volunteers, if not all, complained that the under arm position the sling takes nearly breaks your back when lifted to the deck. This in ideal no wave conditions. We concluded that in sea state conditions the victim would not survive the retrieval and if so would most likely be paralyzed.

Good article.

I bought a new white Taylor Made 20″ life ring in 2015 from West Marine. My boat is kept in Cleveland, Ohio and is under white shrink wrap for five months a year. I leave the life ring on the stern rail in its bracket 12 months of the year. In the summer of 2019 the polypropylene grab line on the life ring fell apart. It looked good visually but it had lost all of its strength. We were shocked. Luckily it was not an emergency.

Another point of failure to watch: the bitter end of the retrieval line, where it exits the storage bag and is then secured to the boat. We kept a life sling on our Catalina 36 for 16+ years. At around the 10 year point, I noticed the nylon webbing UV cover on the end of the retrieval line had pulled away where the line exited the bag, exposing that segment of the line to full sunlight. The unprotected poly line had deteriorated to less than 50% original thickness; probably not strong enough to carry the load of a MOB. Easy fix with new webbing – but easy to miss.

You can get how-to instructions to make a new cover from Sailrite.com, a wonderful source for marine fabric and instruction.

I made a new Lifesling cover using the Sailrite kit. Good instructions, and an easy sewing project for anyone with a household sewing machine. Best part is having it the same color as the rest of my boat’s canvas.

I hate winter because I can’t go with my ships anymore, it is too cold. But you are right; this is the necessary time for us to rest and maintain the boat. Some of your recommendations are very good. I’m going to check the Lifeslings for my ship to make sure it’s safe. Thanks for sharing

I want to add to the comments about Lifesling web failures. Last summer, my wife and I were out for a casual weekend cruise on Chesapeake Bay. Having found a protected anchorage that appeared free of the pesky stinging nettles so common in the Bay, especially late in the summer, my wife decided to go for a vigorous swim. By the time she returned to the boat, she was exhausted and needed some help getting up our stern ladder. This seemed like a job where our Lifesling2 could easily be of assistance. However, once secured, as soon as I put tension on the rope, the webbing snapped. Of course, I was shocked by this. Fortunately, the conditions were calm, and with some additional help from yours truly, she soon was back onboard. I was shaken, not so much from what had happened, but by thinking about the possible consequences of such a failure occurring in a true rescue situation, not in a calm inlet, but in seaway conditions that might lead to a true MOB. The Lifesling2 was 5 years old and I had replaced the bag 2 years before this incident, because of deterioration. The manufacturer’s customer service was good, as they quickly arranged for me to exchange the damaged item at my local West Marine store for a new replacement free of charge. Scary, however!

Years ago, when the cover was deteriorating, I made a sunbrella cover for the lifesling as well as covers for all the exposed lines. Thanks for reminding me to go back and check on their condition.

Sort of have the opposite problem. Well protected from UV, moisture got into the assembly and mildew developed. Any tips to get rid of mildew keeping in mind the cleaning product should not chemically affect to polypropylene?

We have a high freeboard sailboat with a midship boarding ladder on only one side. The previous owner had mounted the life sling in a clear and good-looking spot on the non-boarding ladder side of the boat. Big mistake that was a simple fix to change. Bringing even an agile MOB in the sling around the stern’s dingy davits or around the bow sprit in a sea would have been a nightmare. Practice makes these simple but critical issues obvious. Second lesson learned was there was no easy way to attach a halyard to the collar of the lifesling for winching an unconscious or weak MOB onboard without almost getting in the water yourself due to the high freeboard. This was solved by adding a permanent loop in the poly rope about 5′ above the life sling. Now attaching the halyard is done easily and safely from the deck. A third item to note is the knot you attach the bitter end of the life sling to the stern pulpit rail should be 100% covered from UV light.

What size boat requires a life ring?

Water activities in a weekly boat rental can be fun and adrenaline-fuelled. From watersports, and sailing to swimming, there are endless avenues for fun in your boat rentals . Yet, when in a vast body of water like the ocean, this may have hazardous consequences for inexperienced ones. This is where a life ring comes in handy.

A life ring is a safety precaution used to rescue people in case they fall overboard into the water. This is especially crucial if you rent a yacht for a week on the open water. It’s essentially a floatation device tasked with the responsibility of keeping someone afloat.

If you are sailing with children who don’t know how to swim, a life ring can be easily deployed to keep them above water until help arrives. So, if you have taken overnight yacht rentals and are wondering whether your boat may require a life ring, read along.

Factors to consider before choosing a life ring

life ring on a sailboat

Whether on a party boat rental or regular daily boat rentals , life rings are essential to boating activities. There are four things to consider for a life ring in your sailboat rentals ; size/quantity, color, durability, and grab ropes.

Size and quantity

The size of the ring and the number of life-preserver rings are crucial factors to consider. The most common size is the optimal marine ring size at 24-inches. Before you rent a sailboat for a week , you should also consider that choosing an oversized ring may not always be favorable.

This is because smaller rings offer greater throwing distances and are also ideal for smaller bodies of water such as lakes and pools. Larger rings are more buoyant but have limited reach and distance. If you are taking your large party boat rentals to rough waters such as the ocean or a bay, a bigger life ring might be the better option.

Durability is essential to consider before purchasing a life ring. Make sure your life ring is durable, and is less prone to wear and tear. Be especially careful when inspecting the material the ring is made of. If it is of a poor standard, the ring will likely not last long.

Color may be something that is usually overlooked for safety equipment, but this is an important factor for life rings. Before you rent a boat with captain, consider the color of your life ring because its brightness influences its visibility. Life rings should be bright and easily visible, making them much easier to locate.

Grab ropes are important to consider when choosing the best life ring for your cheap boat rentals near me. This is because they make it easier for a person overboard to grab hold of the ring after it is thrown out. This is a must have if you plan to sail in open waters like the ocean. Ensure that the ropes are durable, can withstand rough waves, and are weather-resistant.

When all these are ticked off, you are well underway to take a boat rental for a week with the family.

What are the various sizes of Life rings?

life ring on a sailboat

For most people who rent a motor boat , life rings are available to them in two standard sizes – 24” or 30” diameters. These sizes are suitable for most water bodies, such as beaches, pools, lakes, harbors, and more.

For a 24”diameter, its ring usually measures 605mm and weighs 2.7kg. Its light design makes it easy to take across long distances in a long term catamaran rental . This small frame also allows it to cover a large throwing distance of up to 10 – 15 meters.

These features make it ideal for rivers, lakes, and other smaller water bodies. If these are areas you want to rent a boat near me, then this ring size may be ideal.

For the 30” diameter, this larger ring has a more limited throwing range. This is why it is mainly used in piers, harbor walls, and reservoirs. If your yacht rental near me is sailing here, then this is the better choice. The main advantage of this size is that it has improved buoyancy and it can ideally support multiple rescues at one time.

What else do I need to keep in mind?

life ring on a sailboat

A major safety tip to observe in your private boat rentals is to ensure that your life ring has an orange color and features a retro-reflective band to increase its visibility, especially during low light or night time. This is in line with SOLAS 74/83 regulations and safety standards for water equipment.

It should ideally be made up of polyethylene, offering more durability in adverse conditions and lasting longer. You cannot always predict the weather when sailing in your boats for rent by owners.

Storing your life ring is also very important. A robust housing is vital to the durability and usefulness of water safety equipment. They should ideally be made from housing material that is corrosion-resistant, so that they are weather and vandal-resistant.

These are the things to know before sailing in boat rentals from private owners.

Life rings are a crucial part of water safety equipment and sometimes can be the main determinant of survival. Whether you are sailing on private boats for rent or cheap yachts for rent, life rings should be an important part of your itinerary.

This guide has gone through the essential questions and answers to understanding life rings and what to look after when choosing the ideal one.

What Size Life Ring Do I Need?

Life rings (or ring buoys) are available in two standard sizes – a 24” or 30” diameter life ring. These life rings are suitable for use in any location where large areas of water may pose a danger such as beaches, lakesides, swimming pools, harbors and water treatment plants. At Glasdon, we supply US Coast Guard type IV approved life rings to meet your water safety equipment needs.

One question we are often asked is ”What size life ring do I need?”

To help you answer this question and choose the most suitable life ring for your location, we explored the advantages and considerations of both sizes.

There are three factors to consider when choosing a life ring:

  • How far and accurately can the ring buoy be thrown?
  • How easy is it to carry for long distances before deployment, if necessary?
  • How much buoyancy does the life ring offer when in use?

24 inch diameter life ring

24” Diameter Life Ring

The 24” Life Ring weighs 3.9 lbs. This lightweight design makes it much easier to carry for further distances than the 30” life ring. Although we do recommend siting life rings at regular intervals near bodies of water to minimize response time.

Thanks to its small and light structure, the 24” life ring can cover a large throwing distance. This ease of deployment means it is ideally suited for rivers, lakes and shelving beaches where the lifebuoy needs to be thrown.

Although it may be small, the 24” life ring has a minimum buoyant force of 28lbs, providing enough buoyancy to support a single rescuee in the water for an appropriate amount of time.

30 inch diameter life ring

30” Diameter Life Ring

The larger sized 30” life ring has a more limited throwing range due to its size and weight of 7.2lbs. As a result, this should ideally be used in areas where there is a vertical drop to the water such as piers, harbors or from onboard boats.

The size of the 30” life ring provides the additional advantage of improved buoyancy (minimum buoyant force of 32lbs) and should be able to support multiple rescuees at one time. Many customers prefer to order the 30" life ring based on its higher buoyancy force.

Other Useful Features

Both the 24” and 30” life rings are brightly colored and feature retro-reflective bands to increase the lifebuoy's visibility, aiding recovery during low light or night time conditions. The international orange color and retro-reflective bands meet SOLAS 74/83 regulations, ensuring they comply with safety standards for water safety equipment.

Constructed with a high density, UV stabilized polyethylene shell, the life rings are hard-wearing, low maintenance and long lasting. The life rings contain 100% foam filling so they will not absorb water if torn or punctured. US Coast Guard type IV approved, our 24" and 30" life rings offer a long-service life, reducing the need for frequent or costly replacement.

Our life rings are also supplied with a 100' rope. Made from 3/8" UV protected polypropylene, the throw line meets SOLAS standards and is both strong and easy to grip to help assist with rescue.

Storing and Protecting Life Rings

We can also provide robust life ring cabinets for the safe storage of vital water safety equipment.  Guardian™ Life Ring Cabinets are manufactured from corrosion resistant Durapol™, which makes the life ring cabinets both weather and vandal resistant. Similar to the life rings, Guardian Life Ring Cabinets are available in two sizes to accommodate either the 24" or 30" life ring.

The Guardian Life Ring Cabinets have many innovative features to assist with water rescue, including Ropemaster™ - a quick release system that can save valuable seconds during rescue attempts. The usage indicator on the housing also lets you see if the life ring cabinet has been opened, allowing for quick and easy inspection.

A variety of fixing options are available for the Guardian life ring cabinet, meaning it can be placed in the most suitable location on your site.

The life ring cabinets can also be installed at intervals of 164 feet to meet ILO safety standards or 200 feet intervals to meet OSHA regulations.

Why Kate Middleton Isn't Wearing Her Wedding and Engagement Rings in New Photo

The Princess opted for a low-key look sans jewelry in the picture released for Mother's Day.

kate middleton and her children

In honor of Mother's Day in the UK, Kensington Palace shared a new photo of Kate Middleton , the first official image of the Princess of Wales released since her abdominal surgery in January.

The picture, which was taken by Prince William earlier this month, shows Kate surrounded by her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. It was accompanied by a brief note thanking the public for their support as she recovers.

"Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day," wrote the Princess. She signed the note with her initial, "C".

In keeping with Kensington Palace's original stance that they will not be providing health updates unless something significant changes, the message did not offer any additional details on Kate's recovery, or when she may next appear publicly. Previously the Palace said , "Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

Kate appears relaxed in the photo, wearing skinny jeans, chunky lace-up boots, and a waxed jacket over a turtleneck sweater. Notably, she is not wearing any jewelry; the Princess opted to go without her wedding and engagement rings for the picture.

When asked about why she isn't wearing her rings, Kensington Palace did not comment. The Princess was at home when the picture was taken by her husband.

It is possible Kate took off her Welsh gold wedding band ahead of her surgery, as is common practice, and has yet to return it to her finger due to swelling or another aspect of her recovery.

Kate does not always wear her engagement ring , the iconic diamond and sapphire heirloom, which once belonged to Princess Diana. She often removes it during engagements involving physical activity or sports, like in 2022, when she took part in a sailing race with team Great Britain.

Notably, when engaging with medical staff or visiting hospitals, like the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Kate also removes her ring to avoid it being a health and safety or hygiene hazard.

Amanda Kloots repurposes engagement ring from late husband Nick Cordero

VIDEO: Nick Cordero and Amanda Kloots' son Elvis says his first words

Amanda Kloots is paying tribute to her late husband Nick Cordero in a special way.

The fitness trainer took to Instagram on Thursday to reveal that she's altered her ring, and is allowing her heart to change while on an ongoing healing journey.

"I have not worn my wedding ring now for a couple of years and it was honestly making me so sad to see it in my jewelry box just collecting dust and not being worn," Kloots said in a video . "But also I didn't know what to do with it and it didn't feel right to wear, especially because it didn't fit any of my other fingers."

She went on to share that she contacted the designers of her engagement ring to ask if there any way to repurpose her heart-shaped diamond to create a look that's more "casual" and could be worn every day while still paying homage to her original.

Kloots admitted that she went back and forth and almost backed out of changing her beloved gem, but essentially ended up coming up with a design.

"Finding a new design, a more casual every day design, that fit my life now was tough," Kloots captioned the video. "I was super picky and very nervous to make this big change."

She continued, "When I received my new ring yesterday I cried. It felt like it signified a new chapter for me, another step forward. I love that I decided to make this change when I was ready and I love that the heart that he gave me will always be in mine."

Middle-earth becomes a giant rave in lord of the rings art.

A new batch of AI-generated Lord of the Rings images turns the land of Middle-earth into one giant rave, with Gandalf taking on DJ duties.

  • AI-generated The Lord of the Rings images imagine what a rave would look like in Middle-earth, complete with Gandalf serving as a DJ.
  • Peter Jackson nailed Middle-earth in his trilogy, due in large part to choosing New Zealand to film the movies in.
  • Practical sets, miniatures, and groundbreaking VFX also helped bring Middle-earth to life in a memorable fashion.

Midde-earth becomes a speaker-filled rave in a new batch of AI Lord of the Rings art. Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 2001, bringing the world J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy story to life in live-action for the first time. Jackson's trilogy was critically-acclaimed and wildly successful at the box office, with audiences and critics alike responding to his depiction of Middle-earth, its various races, and the powerful story of Frodo's quest to destroy the One Ring.

In a new batch of AI-generated images shared by @tolkien.house on Instagram, the The Lord of the Rings ' Middle-earth becomes home to one big rave. Check out the images below:

The art sees heroes and villains alike joining in on the festivities, with Gandalf even shown DJing in one image. Another shows four Hobbits dancing in front of a set of speakers, while another shows an entire army gathered by massive speakers of their own.

How The Lord Of The Rings Movies Bring Middle-Earth To Life

Peter jackson makes some key decisions.

While the Lord of the Rings cast is one of the trilogy's greatest strengths, so too is its depiction of Middle-earth. Jackson chooses New Zealand as the main stand-in for the fantasy land , a decision that proved absolutely essential in hindsight. New Zealand is home to a variety of breathtaking natural landscapes that vary from dramatic, jagged cliffs to lush grasslands to wide rivers, and the country truly helps breathe life into a land that needs to be calming and peaceful at times, and wild and awe-inspiring at others.

While the natural landscapes of New Zealand were essential in bringing Middle-earth to life, so too were painstakingly-designed and made sets. Hobbiton, for example, is often the first location that springs to mind when one thinks of The Lord of the Rings , and the set remains a tourist attraction to this day. Other breathtaking sets include those for Rivendell, the Mines of Moria, Minas Tirith, and Helm's Deep, each one helping to give the settings a tactile feel.

The creator of Helm's Deep, Helm Hammerhand, is set to be explored in the Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim anime .

Miniatures were also crucial to bringing Middle-earth to life . While sets were used for when actors had to move around and interact with a location, miniatures could be used for wider establishing shots. New Zealand's natural landscapes, impressive sets, and miniatures were used in combination with what were, at the time, groundbreaking visual effects. All of this combines to make Middle-earth its own compelling character in The Lord of the Rings , though unfortunately not one that played host to a wild rave.

With WrestleMania XL near, Becky Lynch balancing a busy life in, outside the ring

You might have read that WWE Superstar Becky Lynch brought her new autobiography to the White House earlier this month when she was invited as part of a St. Patrick’s Day event. What you might not know is that she left her book in a White House library next to Dumas Malone’s biography “Jefferson and His Time” and “The Life & Times of William Howard Taft” by Henry F. Pringle.

Lynch’s one regret? She forgot to leave an autographed copy.

“That was a miss by me,” said Lynch, whose given name is Rebecca Quin. “But it is in the library. Or, at least it was a couple of weeks ago.”

Lynch’s book, “Becky Lynch: The Man: Not Your Average Average Girl,” debuted Tuesday, and it set up the most chaotic press run of her professional wrestling career, just in time for WWE’s biggest show of the year, the 40th edition of WrestleMania. She and Rhea Ripley will be one of the showcase matches for the two-day WrestleMania XL next week from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Lynch was a guest on my “Sports Media with Richard Deitsch” podcast, where we discussed her process of writing, storytelling and other subjects. Below is a condensed version of that interview. Some of the content has been edited and condensed for clarity and brevity.

I was struck by how much you revealed in the book when it comes to your relationship with your husband (Colby Lopez, who performs in WWE under the name Seth “Freakin” Rollins). A writer always has to make a decision how deep to go. How did you decide on what to share when it came to the things that mean the most to you?

Lynch : I love our relationship, so I loved writing about it. I loved all the little quirks and the false starts and the “will we, won’t we?” It’s such an exciting part of a relationship. The beginning. Those butterflies. Did he touch my hand? Did he mean to do that? I wanted to put that in there and show all that. They are my favorite parts of the book because, I mean, my favorite part of my life is my relationship with my husband.

We have such a great relationship, and it was such an interesting, fun start. I committed to writing a book that I wanted people to read, and if you’re going to do that, then you can’t be wasting people’s time or your own time. I feel like if you’re going to do this, do it right. Be honest. Get it out there and make it as entertaining and interesting and honest as possible so that people might take something from it. It’s a biography, and a biography should be honest. I wasn’t writing fiction. I’m not writing a novel here.

It seems like a tricky thing to write a book in which you reveal a lot about your vulnerability and self-doubt, which is very much a counter to your in-ring character. How was the writing process when it came to revealing things that totally counter what most people know of you publicly?

Lynch : I think it comes down to several things. One, I always wanted to write a book. My dad always encouraged me to write. As a fan of Mick Foley, he wrote a fantastic book, so I wanted to write a book. I always imagined the stories that would go into a book. But when I actually came to writing the book, I think more than anything else, I just had to be honest. Reading a book is an undertaking, right? You have to take time out of your day. I wanted to give them something that was real and something that I was going through.

You did a writing course for this, right?

Lynch : I did a writing course for a year. I learned a lot about writing. There’s always the fear that you are going to expose yourself, but the fear is good, you know? I think if you can be honest, it’s harder to criticize somebody for their genuine feelings because, well, that’s how I feel. You can’t tell me that it’s wrong because that’s how I felt. I wanted to show what it was like in my mind, going through all of these things and the doubts and the anxieties and the fears, but overcoming them all. The interesting thing I think about me — and I think that a lot of people can relate to this — is I have this weird juxtaposition of unshakable self-belief and just crippling self-doubt at the same time. It’s a weird thing.

Some of it comes into wrestling. I said it in a promo a few weeks ago: When people believe in me, I’m good, but when people doubt me, I am great. That is genuinely how I feel. Sometimes it takes me a second when I doubt myself, and I’ll sit and wallow in it for a second, and then there’s, like, this rage against the machine — even if I happen to be the machine. Going through that roller coaster of emotions is very human, and I wanted to write about my own human experience.

You have a busy life. A career. A daughter. A husband in the wrestling business. But you’ve got to find time to write. When did you write this book?

Lynch : I’m not a crack-of-dawn kind of person. In this house, we don’t do the crack of dawn. My daughter doesn’t do it, thank God. We always laugh at those success videos that say you have to get up at 4 a.m. I was borrowing time, stealing time whenever I could get it. (When) my parents were over, we would go to a kids museum with my daughter, and I had my laptop. I would write anywhere I could — on planes, backstage at live events. But it was so important that I also have my family life. When (my daughter) goes to bed, I love those few hours where it’s just me and Colby and we get that time to ourselves. I feel like I very much snuck a book in.

Most authors worry about how the closest to them will react to what they wrote. Did you show what you were writing to Colby or your brother, or the important people in your life prior to whenever it was close to the finished product?

Lynch : My brother read a much earlier draft, and he liked it. But that’s not even close to what it became. Colby read it in a matter of days, and said he loved it. He was the person I was most scared to show it to. When he liked it and gave me his feedback, that meant the world to me. He’s never lied to me, so if he was going to lie to me, this would have been the first time … but I don’t think he did.

How did you determine what you would write when it came to people in wrestling?

Lynch : I think with certain people like Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Fergal (Devitt, who wrestles as Finn Bálor), they’re all easy because they’re such close friends. They’ve been such an important part of my life. Charlotte Flair has also been such an important part of my life, but we’ve had the fallings-out. I think what was important to me was to make sure that I told it from, as much as possible, being able to see her side of things as opposed to just telling my side. When you’re writing about other people, they don’t get the chance to defend themselves. You need to be fair in that.

I wanted to be able to see her side of it. I wanted to show the realness of the relationship, because between our ups and downs, there is always love, especially on my end. When you feel hurt, do you feel hurt more because you love a person? I think that’s ultimately what it is. I tried to show that, and hopefully I did show that and didn’t paint her in a bad light because I don’t think that’s fair to do in a book.

Vince McMahon is part of this book given his impact on your career. He placed you in a main event role, and he and Stephanie McMahon were big supporters of your career. The book was done prior to the allegations (of sex trafficking, physical and emotional abuse, sexual assault and negligence) that came out about Vince . How do you navigate the current allegations against Vince with the person you wrote about in the book?

Lynch : They’re horrendous allegations. They’re horrendous, and it’s so hard to to listen to and reconcile because you don’t know that person. The person that I’ve experienced was like a granddad — at times, a very grumpy granddad and one that you’re frustrated with, but one that was so supportive of me and my family and of my career, encouraging and understanding, and also very responsible for the dream that I have. The fact that there is a WWE and for them allowing me to live my dream, for meeting my husband, for my whole family, everything that I have … and then you hear these allegations. It’s hard to connect the two. In many ways, they just feel like two different people. Trying to see them as one person, I don’t know, it’s very hard. It’s very difficult to reconcile.

It’s somebody who was so close to you and has given you so much … and then, you’re a woman in this business, a woman who is so driven for change and so forward and so ambitious in that. You want everybody to have the experience that you have, and when they don’t, it’s heartbreaking. It’s difficult and not anything that you want to hear about. It’s just very hard when it’s somebody that’s so close to you or has been so close to you.

You recently became a U.S. citizen. Why was that important for you?

Lynch : I’ve always just had this yearning to be in America. I felt like anything was possible if I could get over there and I could follow my dreams and all those kind of clichés about the American dream. But I think more now than anything, I have an American daughter, I have an American husband, and my family is American. It’s time for me to be part of that family. Not just my immediate family but the communal family. I had to have my green card for five years, and when that happened, I applied right away.

Are you excited about doing a book tour versus what is a traditional wrestling press junket for WrestleMania?

Lynch : Yeah, I am. I’ve gotten to do the tours as Becky Lynch, but this is my first tour as Rebecca Quin. That’s exciting. I’ve put so much work into this and put my heart and soul into writing this book. Of course they’re coming out to see Becky Lynch, but I feel like they are also coming to see Rebecca Quin, and that feels very real and surreal to me.

Hornell natives, national figures enter the ring for Xcite Wrestling debut. How to watch.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Hornell is looking to get a little rowdy Saturday night.

Xcite Wrestling is bringing suplexes, body slams and general mayhem to Hornell for the first time, hosting “Maple City Madness” at the Hornell Area Family YMCA on Center Street.

The independent promoter typically holds events in Binghamton and Horseheads, but it was inspired to venture further west in the Southern Tier after a handful of Hornell-area wrestlers requested a local show.

“They said there’s a lot of people who might not be able to make the drive out to Horseheads on the regular, so what if we tried doing a show in Hornell? They’ve got this venue that would be perfect-sized and we’d love to be able to wrestle in front of our friends and neighbors,” said Steve Popoloski, Xcite’s EVP of Sales & Marketing.

Popoloski said the Hornell-area wrestlers climbing the ranks at Xcite — with a few climbing into the ring Saturday night — are Cerin Rahne, Chael Connors, Phinehas Sun and Kayda Syn. Two referees, Ryan Rice and Brian Baize, are also from Hornell.

The group has been training with HC Loc, who has wrestled with ECW and Ring of Honor, and had a nine-month reign with the Xcite Heavyweight Title in 2022. Loc will also hit the ring Saturday.

“They’re at the point now where they’re regulars on our roster and they’re going out to other promotions in the region and working,” Popoloski said of the Hornell crew. “It’s very encouraging to see this new crop of homegrown talent that we can pull from with more in the pipeline.”

Hornell fans may also recognize Tommy Dreamer, a WWE and ECW regular in the 1990s and 2000s. Dreamer will wrestle in the main event Saturday night against Price Purgold, a challenger out of Rochester.

“If somebody knows nothing about Xcite, they’ll see Tommy Dreamer on the poster and go ‘Oh, I remember him from TV.’ He’s a big get,” said Popoloski.

Xcite has also been encouraged by the excitement of the Hornell community in the days leading up to the event. Front row seating is already sold out.

“The response has been way beyond what we expected. We thought it would do well, but our presale numbers are higher than they have been for any other shows,” said Popoloski. “The sponsorship support from the local business community is incredible.”

Doors will open at 6 p.m., with the show starting at 7 p.m. General admission tickets are available online until Saturday morning. Remaining cash-only tickets will be sold at the door Saturday night. Adults cost $20 per ticket, with $10 for kids under 13-years-old. Kids under 3 enter for free.

While Saturday marks Xcite’s Hornell debut, Popoloski said Maple City Madness could become a regular event if it’s a hit with the community.

“If this show goes as well as it looks like it’s going to go, I could see us planning two or three, maybe four shows a year in Hornell moving forward,” he said.

Nine crypto VCs on why Q1 investments were so hot and how it compares to previous bull market

If the 2023 crypto venture landscape was an ice-cold pot of water, the first quarter of 2024 is the part where the bubbles start to form right before water boils, Tom Schmidt, a partner at Dragonfly Capital, said to TechCrunch. Nage said his firm has tracked over 690 deals across stages that have transpired during Q1, about 30 to 40% more than the lows in 2023. “In Q1, the crypto venture capital funding landscape was cautiously optimistic, rebounding from a challenging two-year period of fundraising difficulties for both companies and managers,” said Alex Felix, co-founder and chief investment officer at CoinFund.
