Hear Kenny Chesney’s Reflective New Song ‘Better Boat’

Kenny Chesney offers up a big-picture ballad about learning to overcome what gets you down in the new song “Better Boat,” the third track revealed from his upcoming Songs for the Saints album.

Written by Travis Meadows and Liz Rose and featuring background vocals from “Come to Jesus” singer Mindy Smith, the quiet tune also rings with gut-string guitar lines courtesy of perennial CMA Musician of the Year Mac McAnally. It’s all about finding positivity and inner strength in the face of adversity, and Chesney says the song’s philosophical theme perfectly captures the emotion of the months following Hurricane Irma, which devastated the U.S. and British Virgin Islands last fall.

“Now and then I let it go / I ride the waves I can’t control / I’m learning how to build a better boat,” he sings in the song’s chorus.

Chesney is back on the road this summer, taking his 2018 Trip Around the Sun Tour through stadiums and amphitheaters with the help of Thomas Rhett, Old Dominion and Brandon Lay. Songs for the Saints is scheduled for release on July 27th, and Chesney plans to donate all proceeds from album to his Love for Love City Foundation, which funds rebuilding projects across the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.

• At this time, Chesney owned two Sea Rays, a 56 and a 60-footer, and in his spare time he was most likely out on the water in one of his boats. This song, which he co-wrote with Dean Dillon and Scotty Emerick pays tribute to his love of being out on the ocean.
• The song includes the lyric, "vessels of freedom/harbors of healing," which is how Chesney feels when he's riding the waves. "That line came from a gentleman and his daughter I met in St. Croix," he explained in the June 2011 issue of Boating magazine. "I think anybody who has a boat has an emotional attachment to it. It has a way of healing a person and gives him a sense of freedom. That's where I feel the most freedom - and it's helped me heal something that needed healing."

The Kenny Chesney Come Over song was was released in May 2012 as the second single from Chesney’s 2012 album Welcome to the Fishbowl .  This song reached #1 on the Billboard Country Singles chart starting August 11, 2012.

The music video shows scenes featuring Chesney and his romantic interest in the video (Courtney McCann).[  The music video was filmed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with some ocean scenes near Miami Beach, Florida. The video also features a cameo from his dog, Poncho, standing on a paddleboard alongside Chesney.  Kenny’s Yacht at the time is also prominently shown in the music video.
