Pioneering the nautical tours segment in Pernambuco, the Catamaran Tours has stood out for 30 years in the local tourist scene for all the advances made, 20 of them in the heart of the capital of Pernambuco. It was the company, led by the Britto family, who turned the tourism navigation through the rivers that cut Recife´s downtown into one of the most sought after programs by locals and tourists, proving, like other Brazilian and foreign cities, that it is possible to reinvent the relationship

between population and the waters of rivers and seas that pass through the city.

The company began its activities with only one type of tour and currently has scheluded eight itineraries, with varied boarding times. Five of them kept in Recife (Haunted Catamaran, Ilha de Deus, Pirates of Capibaribe, Recife and its Neighborhoods and Recife and its Bridges), two on the South coast, on the Carneiros and Suape beaches, two of the most beautiful beaches in Pernambuco and the Island Tour of Itamaracá on the Northern Coast of Pernambuco.

And there are still the special tours that go into the schedule according to the demand or the time of year. “

Catamaran Tours

Catamaran Tours has been operating for 14 years and currently has a fleet of 4 passenger boats for river tours around Recife from a base near the old port and Itamaraca Island, 1 hour from Recife.

Recife is known as the 'Brazilian Venice', at it is criss-crossed by two rivers, the Capibaribe and Beberibe, which around the old centre, Recife Antigo , produce several islands and many bridges.

The tours include trips:

- around the islands of Old Recife and its bridges and historical buildings, many originally dating from colonial times - see virtual tours and photos;

- up river through the traditional residential districts of Recife;

- into preserved mangrove swamps in the Recife metropolitan area;

- around Itamaraca and Coroa de Avião island, on the North coast some 50 km from Recife.

Each trip is accompanied by a trained tour guide, who is usually bilingual, but it is advisable this is requested in advance where possible.

The shore base is well equipped with a restaurant and bar serving a variety of hot and cold dishes, plus ice-cream for the kids (of all ages).

Catamaran have their own bus and offer transfers to and from your hotel or place of stay, within the package and depending on location.

It has worked out perfectly each time. The driver meets us at arrivals, helps with the bags and the car is near-by. We have been in several of their vehicles and they are all newer and pristine clean. One of the drivers speaks English and is very helpful. Driving in Brazil can be tricky. The highway is ok but city and other streets can be difficult to navigate. At least I know in Recife, I’ve been traveling there for +20 years. For us a transfer service works because there is enough in Porto to keep us busy especially if your in walking distance to town. I would not hesitate to also use this service for tours. Especially with the English speaking driver! He has helped us several times communicate with hotel staff. Especially this last time locating a Covid test site. The cost is very reasonable, especially compared to a rental. They are trustworthy. So it makes the trip less worrisome. I would not hesitate to use their tour service. It’s the first time I used a service and was a bit concerned about the reliability. Everything was perfect. They were at the airport on time with a sign at arrivals. The car was parked close by...it was like new, spacious and very clean. The return to Recife was the same. The first driver spoke English, brought us some maps and played a nice tourist video in the car. All in English. Now I see that you can make arrangements right through Trip Advisor. I was able to do it by email from the US. (I couldn’t connect to Brazilian websites, a server issue) I used pay pal for the trip down and gave the driver cash for the return. We were 11 tourists and were very comfortable in his 14 passenger air conditioned van that was equipped with wifi. Our driver/guide was prompt and provided us with a good tour of Olinda, a World Heritage site, and the Ceramic Studio of Francisco Brennand, as we had requested. Our 6 hour tour turned into 7-1/2 hours as a result of traffic and the distance between the 2 requested sites. We would recommend booking even more time or remaining on one side of Recife and seeing one of these sites in more detail, perhaps adding other points of interest that are in closer proximity.
