Der Service war sehr nett. Das Essen war lieblos, kleine Portionen und die Preise für das was geboten wurde, absolut nicht angemessen. Für Kinder kosten Nudeln mit Butter 6,50-Ich verstehe, dass Lebensmittel, Personal und Strom bezahlt werden müssen, aber dieser Preis ist einfach nur unverschämt!... Ich kann das Restaurant nicht weiterempfehlen. Mehr

Ich war regelmäßiger Gast. Die Preise sind innerhalb eines Jahres massiv gestiegen und somit absolut überteuert. Service: Lange Wartezeiten und wenig gastorientiert. Nudelgericht für Erwachsene, viel zu wenig, auf Nachfrage kam die Antwort: Die Küche hat es genau auf den Preis abgewogen. Nudeln für Kinder:... Für etwas mehr hatten wir vorgeschlagen einen Aufpreis zu zahlen, statt dessen kam die Aufforderung zwei Portionen zu bestellen. Zukünftig nicht mehr unser Lokal. Mehr

Das Hotel liegt zentral, man muss allerdings wissen, wo sich der Eingang befindet. Das Personal ist freundlich, wenn auch unterbesetzt. Dies hat man an manchen Stellen gemerkt. Beim Frühstück war ein netter Herr alleine, er musste sich um alles selbst kümmern. Abends in der Bar,... sah man Mitarbeter:innen, welche tagsüber bereits an der Rezeption gesessen haben. Eine Zimmerreinigung fand aufgrund von Personalmangel nicht statt. Das Frühstücksbüffet war ausreichend, die Basis war vorhanden. Mehr

Am Montag Abend waren min 4 Klassiker der Karte aus. Die beiden Salate mit Hühnchenbrusstreifen und Rindfleisch waren in Ordnung. Bei den beiden Portionen Pannfisch waren die Fische totgebraten, die Senfsosse geschmacksneutral und die Menge der Bratkartoffeln sehr überschaubar. Nachbestellung kam anstandslos. Wir waren zum Pizza-Essen im Acqua, obwohl wir wegen der vorherigen schlechten Bewertungen skeptisch waren. Wir haben das Essen sehr genossen. Bier (Grevensteiner) und Rotwein (Primitivo) waren sehr lecker, unsere Pizzen durchweg gut. Teig kross und schmackhaft, Belag auch prima. Wir wurden sehr freundlich bedient,... leider nicht nach Nachtisch oder Espresso gefragt. Sonst war aber alles prima und lecker. Wir würden hier gerne wieder Pizza essen! Samstag Abend um 20:30 ist die Küche kalt. Mit dieser Begründung es sind zu wenig Gäste die essen wollten, blieb sie es auch. War mein letzter Besuch dort. Wollten im Restaurant als 5-köpfige Familie essen gehen. Bis wir am Eingang des Lokals empfangen wurden dauerte es eine ganze Zeit! Uns wurden dann mögliche Tische angeboten. Nach Einnahme der Sitzplätze wurde uns mitgeteilt das dieser Tisch dann doch schon vergeben wäre. Die Art und... Weise der Ansprache des Personals zeigte deutlich das wir in dem Lokal nicht willkommen waren! Wir haben uns direkt entschlossen das Lokal wieder zu verlassen! Wir waren dort am Sonntag essen und alles war TOP, nur als ein Gewitter gegen 18.00 Uhr aufzog, wurde das Dach gechlossen und die Hälfte wurde ein Raucherbereich. Diverse Männer plazierten sich dort mit stinkenden Zigarren und Zigaretten, so etwas schreckliches habe ich seit Jahren... nicht erlebt. Ich hatte mich total auf den schönen Butt gefreut, aber leider wurde mir die Freude daran genommen. Leider werde ich dieses Lokal nicht wieder aufsuchen, oder solche Sachen werden geändert. Mehr

Ganz toller Fisch, gute Portionen und sehr lecker, sehr gute Bratkartoffeln. Besonders hervorzuheben ist der Heilbutt mit Meerbohnen und blauen Kartoffeln. Bedienung ordentlich und zuvorkommend.

Overall rating

So, we have been here twice. The first time we did the take away for white asparagus traditionally served with potatoes and the tarte flambé served also with white asparagus. It was truly delicious, though pricey. I like that the food is freshly prepared. And I like the food is served fresh, though a little too bland for my preference. But I love the location, the service and the lovely covered patio seating with covering Incase it should rain. Well done!

Traveled with family ( with elderly and kid ). Booked a family room, with a big terrace. The Room was clean, spacious with 1 double bed + bunk bed in a separate room. Breakfast at the restaurant was good. Staff was very helpful and we feel very welcomed. Hotel location was great, needed just a little walk, and there’s a beach. Free parking at the hotel.

Das Personal war sehr zuvorkommend und freundlich. die Zimmer sehr geräumig und gut ausgestattet.

Ich wurde von der Dame an der Rezeption ganz besonders freundlich empfangen und habe mich gleich sehr wohl gefühlt! Die Lage des Hotels ist perfekt, sehr nah am Wasser. Das Zimmer war sehr gemütlich, mit Liebe zum Detail eingerichtet ,mit allem ausgestattet, was man braucht und sehr sauber! Das Hotel verfügt über einen gut ausgestatteten Fitnessraum. Ich war nur eine Nacht da, aber es eignet sich sicher auch für einen längeren Aufenthalt. Ich würde jederzeit wiederkommen!

Es war alles sehr sauber und das Personal war ausgesprochen freundlich.

Wegen Zug-Verspätungen waren wir erst kurz vor 22:00 Uhr dort, bekamen dennoch ein kleines Abendessen. Das Frühstück am nächsten Morgen war sehr gut! Wegen einer eventuellen (wg. Windstärken) See-Bestattung waren wir nur kurz im Hotel. Man war sehr freundlich mit uns!

Reviving classic Russian cuisine

Roads & Kingdoms talks to Russian chef Vladimir Mukhin of Moscow’s super-restaurant, White Rabbit.

Still in his mid-30’s, Vladimir Mukhin is already one of Russia’s best known chefs and the leading culinary light of the White Rabbit Group, which has 16 restaurants around the country. The most well-known of these, Moscow’s  White Rabbit , was named one of the 50 best restaurants in the world last year. Roads & Kingdoms’ Nathan Thornburgh talked to Mukhin in Moscow about being a fifth-generation chef, reviving classic Russian cuisine, and finding good product in the age of embargoes.

Nathan Thornburgh: Tell me about White Rabbit, what is the food? What are you trying to accomplish there?

Vladimir Mukhin: The White Rabbit is a big restaurant. We’re trying to revive Russian cuisine. I’m a fifth-generation chef, so I’m passionate about the food we create. During the Soviet Union period, we killed Russian food. Classic Russian recipes became too simplified. For example, usually you drink tea, but if you want to be, just to be creative, want to make the tea with milk, you can’t. It would be like stealing milk from the government. People went to jail.

When I was growing up, I remember my grandfather coming to the kitchen and crying because he couldn’t experiment with his food.

Thornburgh: Wow. I remember this famous photo session with Che Guevara which came up with some of his best pictures, maybe two incredible iconic portraits came from an entire roll of film, and the photographer went to him and showed him this roll of film and Che said, What the hell are you doing? You wasted all of these images. You took 30 pictures to get one? That’s the government’s film. It’s a similar mentality.   So you’re telling the story of a kind of cuisine that was lost on the Soviet history and now you’re playing with this idea of finding it again. What does your process look like? Do you get as many grandmothers as you can round up and just kind of shake recipes out of them? How were you doing this?

Mukhin: I just try to work with as many local farmers and producers as I can, so we can use as many Russian ingredients as we can.

Thornburgh: So this is a close relationship.

Mukhin: Yes. I traveled throughout Russia—not just the big cities, but also the villages to talk with older people.

Thornburgh: You know I think people don’t understand the vastness of Russia, and how big it’s collection of cultures and languages and cuisines is. What parts of the country influences your food?

Mukhin: I’m inspired by the whole country. It’s a big territory, and sometimes it feels like it’s too big. I try and use different techniques and ingredients from all over the country, which I think makes my menus distinct.

We have an a la carte menu with about 50 dishes of classical Russian food. Everything looks modern because I’m a young chef. But if you close your eyes and try these dishes, you’ll taste 100% classic Russian flavors.

I want to highlight all aspects of Russian cuisine. Before the Olympic Games in Sochi, we opened a restaurant there, not just to make money, but to expose people visiting for the Olympics to Russian food. That’s why we opened The Red Fox restaurant. It’s all about Russian ingredients.

Thornburgh: Sochi, at least when I’ve been there, is like a Miami Beach. It’s like a place to get pizza and sushi, and go to the nightclubs.

Mukhin: You been?

Thornburgh: Yeah.

Mukhin: It’s crazy.

Thornburgh: It’s a little crazy, but it’s interesting to bring in Red Fox and sort of say okay, because people are coming out, let’s bring Russia to Sochi.

Mukhin: It was incredible. We had thousands of visitors at the restaurant.  

Thornburgh: So you really looked internally for inspiration. Did working outside of Russia motivate you to focus on Russian cuisine?

Mukhin: Yes. I spent time working in Avignon, France. I worked with Christian Etienne, and he would make a special Russian meal once a year.  It was crazy.

Thornburgh: How was the food?

Mukhin: It was shit. I told him that I would cook real Russian food for him, and I did. I cooked borscht, blinis, and other classics. He liked it and said that once a year we should use my recipes, but with his influence. I agreed, and we went on to make amazing food. Eventually, I wanted to come back to my motherland. So I left and I started working on making White Rabbit a reality.

Thornburgh: When people go to White Rabbit, what are they going to find?

Mukhin: Someone once told me that there is a new Russian cuisine and an old Russian cuisine. I think Russian cuisine is going through an evolution. So I hope people will come and see evolution at White Rabbit.

«Dr. Zhivago» – New Restaurant in the Very Center of Moscow

«Dr. Zhivago» – new restaurant by Alexander Rappoport has conformable with its name pre-revolutionary spirit and a view at the main tourist crossroad.

The restaurant has opened on the ground floor of Hotel «National» with the view of the Kremlin and Manezhnaya Square. It has traditional Russian, but modern cuisine.

«Dr. Zhivago» has interesting interior: mosaics at the ceiling, chandeliers in the form of the Kremlin stars, colorful peasant by Malevich, Petrov-Vodkin, Dejneka and Samohvalov. Porcelain figurines, paintings on the walls, plaster workers and collective farmers – everything looks very Russian.

The food is good, cheap and plentiful: carps in sour cream (640 rubles -€13), “Olivier” (Russian Salad) with smoked chicken (350 rubles – €7), solyanka (meat soup) (300 rubles -€6), goose with cranberries (740 rubles – €15) and duck with pickled apples (780 rubles – €16).

Chefs in «Dr. Zhivago» do not use balsamic vinegar, replacing it with derivatives of cranberry, they use flaxseed and pumpkin oils instead the olive one, geese are bought in a monastery, herring is brought from Murmansk and Astrakhan. There is a beverage room, with a collection of at least 200 types of vodka and distillates that are stored at the appropriate temperature.

Janus Restaurant

The Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya's Janus Restaurant is a traditionally styled dining room with attractive Gothic carved ceilings and pristine white walls and linen. The menu serves up classic Russian haute cuisine and a few more contemporary authorial dishes, with an impressive wine list to accompany it. Buffet breakfast is served in the Janus daily from 6.30am to 10.30am daily (from 7am at weekends).
